MS Bike, Canadian Society’s Annual Fundraiser, Returns to Live Rides

The word

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada  has opened  MS Bike , an annual cycling event to raise awareness and funds for research and services that make the difference for the more than 90,000 Canadians living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Conducted in an entirely virtual format due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, this year marks the return of in-person cycling events, with virtual options also available.

“After two years apart, we’re thrilled to be coming together as a community in locations across the country for the MS Bike, raising awareness and important funds for those affected by MS,” Kyla Arsenault, senior director of community fundraising at MS Society of Canada, said in the group’s  press release .

“The MS Bike is a testament to the resilience of the MS community who have faced tremendous uncertainty, on top of an already uncertain disease, throughout this pandemic. Regardless of where or how they cycle, MS Bike participants are taking collective action to diminish that uncertainty and move us closer to a world free of MS,” Arsenault added.

To participate, cyclists are invited to register for any of 11 in-person bike rides across Canada or sign up to ride virtually in their own neighborhood. Individuals wishing to participate as a group can join an existing team or start their own.

The fundraiser, which runs over four months, kicked-off with the 24th annual Fraser Valley MS Bike in British Columbia on June 18 and 19. In-person events will run until the final ride — the 22nd annual Waskesiu MS Bike Ride  — on Sept. 17.

While COVID-19 restrictions may differ across in-person sites, the MS Society says it will monitor the situation and take all necessary safety precautions.

People choosing to take part in a virtual ride will have access to the same fundraising tools, resources, and rewards as those participating in in-person events, the society said.

After choosing their own date and distance, virtual riders can log their cycling progress and will receive an exclusive finisher medal upon showing that they biked for at least 90 km (about 56 miles).

Other fundraising rewards include MS Bike jerseys and shorts, with an MS Bike jacket available to those who raise CA$5,000 (about $3,850) or more.

Mary MacGregor has biked in the Leduc to Camrose ride in Alberta for almost 20 years, participating in her first ride the year she was diagnosed with MS.

“When you’re first diagnosed with MS, it’s easy to feel scared and isolated,” MacGregor said. “Being a part of the MS Bike that first year after my diagnosis was an emotional experience that allowed me to see that I wasn’t alone. There’s a lot of hope and optimism at the ride, which we continue to see year after year.”

With more than 2,100 registered participants and 382 teams, MS Bike has so far raised about CA$1.4 million toward its goal of CA$4.5 million.

Here are links to a full list of in-person events  and to register to ride virtually . Individuals wishing to make a contribution to MS Bike can donate on the event webpage.

MS Bike Raises $4.3M and Counting in Support of Canadians Living with Multiple Sclerosis

Funds raised during the four-month cycling event series to go toward ms research and programs by ms canada..

TORONTO, ON (Oct. 5, 2023) — After a successful MS Bike season, MS Canada is pleased to share that it has raised $4.3 million and counting. Fundraising efforts were ongoing until September 30th, and the organization predicts the total will reach $4.6 million after the closing count.

“Every year we are impressed by the way the MS Bike community shows up, and this year was no exception," said Nicole Sullivan, Director of Community Fundraising at MS Canada. “We are deeply grateful to each and every person who rode, cheered, and donated over the last four months and made the 2023 MS Bike season a success. Every participant brings our cause to the forefront of their community, helping us spread awareness about MS and ways to get involved and help.”

Each spring and summer for the past 34 years, MS Bike has brought together thousands of Canadians looking to support the multiple sclerosis (MS) community, while taking on a fully supported, vibrant and energizing ride. This year over 3,100 participants came together to raise awareness and funds for MS. Locations for the 10 confirmed MS Bike events for 2024 are available now - each providing a unique experience filled with activities, impact speeches and a supportive community fostering friendships that will last a lifetime. To date, MS Bike events have raised $135 million dollars, a figure that will rise once the final count from 2023 is confirmed.

“I had no idea that after I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis almost 18 years ago, I would be where I am today,” said Melanie Bennett, MS Bike participant and ambassador. “As I often do when I speak at MS Bike events, I want to say thank you to everyone who participated this year. Without this funding, there would be no dollars for research, and without that research I might not be able to walk right now, let alone run or ride a bike,” said Bennett.

Funds raised through MS Canada’s MS Bike event series support Canadians living with MS across the country by offering various programs and services, such as the MS Knowledge Network, peer support groups, and more. Funds also support groundbreaking research projects investigating the causes, treatments, and pathways to cures - working towards a world free of MS.

MS Bike 2024 fundraising begins on October 1st. Supporters can donate and find information on registering for MS Bike 2024 events by following this link: https://msspbike.donordrive.com .

Our 2023 MS Bike Ride Season Recap

New routes and familiar faces.

New Routes and Familiar Faces on our MS bike rides

Unclip your cleats, dip that tire, and pop some champagne. It’s time to celebrate a successful 2023 season for Bike the US for MS and our MS bike ride fundraisers.

In addition to our classic cross country bike tour, the Northern Tier , and long distance cycle tours up the Atlantic Coast, and down the Pacific Coast , we offered two new week long rides in our 2023 season. The Olympic Peninsula Loop that started and finished in Seattle, and The GAP and C&O trail ride that started in Pittsburgh and finished in Washington, D.C.

With the help of 80+ cyclists putting on a Bike the US for MS jersey, and the hundreds of supporters behind them, our 2023 teams were able to raise over $214,000 to go towards improving the lives of those living with multiple sclerosis!

Check out each team’s adventure with our photo recap, and how to be a part of our 2024 season .

Atlantic Coast MS bike ride

The Atlantic Coast

From the sandy beaches of florida to the rocky coast of maine.

We kicked off the season in sunny St Augustine, Florida in April. The ride was full of challenges out on the road, but it is great to see that over half the team has signed up to take on another adventure with us in 2024.

The team was able to visit an assisted living center outside of Philadelphia, work together on a service project, and make a virtual donation to the MS Alliance of Virginia.

“Through the many interactions you’ll have along the way, a Bike the US for MS ride has the potential to make a good person even better. The perfect solution to improve one’s body, mind and soul.” Atlantic Coast 2023 Team Member

Atlantic Coast Highlights

Northern Tier

A small group with big heart.

While only a core group of 8 team members made the full trip from Bar Harbor, ME to Seattle, WA , a handful of segment cyclists joined them along the way. Sharing the adventure, the group turned a set of strangers into close friends.

The team was able to complete service projects in Cleveland and Bismarck, as well as make a donation to the Fairview MS Achievement and spend a life affirming afternoon with them.

“Each day presented a brand new challenge that was a journey of its own, giving me the chance to appreciate this country’s beauty, be reminded of the goodness of kind people, renew my humility, reinvigorate my spirit, and hopefully grow as a person” Northern Tier 2023 Team Member

Cross Country cycle highlights - Northern Tier

The Olympic Peninsula

A new route with familiar faces.

With 40 team members, this was our biggest group in years! It made Seattle feel like an alumni family reunion reminiscent of our 10 year reunion.

In just a week’s riding, the Olympic Peninsula Loop created an adventure-packed journey, from misty mornings and scenic ferry rides to relaxing beachside rest stops. Amidst the towering beauty of PNW forests, our team shared laughter and memories from their many years of riding with Bike the US for MS, dating as far back as 2009. We were fortunate to cap off the trip with a fantastic celebration and check donation to the Swedish MS Center .

“I’m always blown away by the positivity, resilience, and kindness of Bike the US for MS cyclists. BTUSFMS is like adult summer camp: you’ll come away as a stronger, better person with some amazing stories and lifelong friends you can’t wait to see again.” Olympic Peninsula 2023 Team Member

Pacific Coast Bike Route

Rolling waves and redwoods.

Embarking on our 2023 Pacific Coast adventure from Seattle to San Diego was a blast! Our crew of 12, mostly Bike the US for MS alumni, tackled the 32-day journey like champs. Two team members faced the challenges of cycling with multiple sclerosis, reminding us that supporting those affected by MS lies at the heart of our mission.

It wasn’t all serious pedaling. We mixed in a ton of fun – beach shenanigans and nights camping under the towering Redwoods. We will be back for more in 2024, this time in July. Be sure to check out the Pacific Coast bike route as you’re next adventure.

“My favorite experience on the Pac Coast ride was waking up and leisurely riding through the Redwood Forest. Watching the sun rays make their way through the trees and listening to the birds sing their morning song.” Pacific Coast 2023 Team Member

The GAP and C&O

A trip of firsts.

This was our first time leading a trip on The GAP (Great Alleghany Pass) and C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) canal from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. It was also our first car-free trail ride and first camping optional trip thanks to our six generous hosts! A little mud to round out our Fall season never hurt anyone right?

The decision to repeat the route in 2024 is a testament to the appeal of this adventure! This time, we’re extending it to 6 days of riding, eager to relive the scenic beauty of the Eastern Continental Divide. Keen for the GAP & C&O in 2024? One tip, 28mm tyres or bigger are best.

“Lovely, safe gravel riding. BTUSFMS understands how to support riders of all abilities and experience levels, while creating a supportive and memorable team atmosphere.” GAP & C&O 2023 Team Member

Ready for your next MS bike ride?

Feeling inspired to ride in 2024.

Our 2023 cycling season may have come to a close, but 2024 is just around the corner! Don’t forget our new adventures including our March MS Bike Ride Florida coastal bike route, featuring a 3 day Florida Keys Bike Trail weekend, as well as our North Lakes adventure from Minneapolis to Chicago in August. The TransAmerica cross country cycle route is BACK and already has 12 riders signed up! Be sure to join the team or check out our full schedule of rides . See you in 2024!

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world with over 90,000 Canadians living with MS, and approximately 12 diagnosed every day. The annual MS Bike fosters meaningful connections both within the MS community, and beyond. Riders taking on the challenge make a difference in MS Canada’s ability to support the MS community, and going the distance has a ripple effect.

Funds raised support Canadians affected by MS by funding a variety of MS Canada’s programs and services such as the MS Knowledge Network, peer support groups, and more. Funds also support research that investigates the causes, treatments, and pathways to cures for MS.

“As a fully supported ride, MS Bike is a great opportunity for people to come together in support of the MS community through an energizing yet achievable challenge,” said Nicole Sullivan, Director of Community Fundraising at MS Canada. “What makes MS Bike such a unique experience is that it encourages not only those personally impacted by the disease to participate, but also anyone else who is up for joining our dedicated and diverse community. Each event has a special set of festivities and rest stops making it a fun experience for all who ride.”

About MS Canada MS Canada fosters meaningful connections both within the MS community, and between the MS community and research, programs, resources, and services. As of 2023, MS Canada amalgamates two previously known entities, the MS Society of Canada and the MS Scientific Research Foundation, continuing its work toward the same vision of a world free of multiple sclerosis. The MS community is at the centre of MS Canada. For 75 years we have been relentless in our fight, continuously funding research to expand the current MS knowledge base. We also advocate for people living with MS, asking the government to remove barriers and improve policies that impact their everyday lives. For more information visit mscanada.ca
