Table of Contents

1 Day NYC Christmas Itinerary

If you only have one day in NYC for Christmas you’ll want to focus on as many of the city’s iconic Christmas sights as you can, while including the must-see borough of Brooklyn. This means an early start and a detailed game plan (don’t worry, we’ve included both a map and a handy list of all the places mentioned at the end of each section to help with your plan of attack!).

1 Day in NYC at Christmas: Morning – One World Observatory and Holiday Village at The Oculus

With only a day to explore NYC, the only way you’ll see all of the city’s famous buildings is through one of the sky-high observatories. We recommend the One World Observatory as it opens a full hour before the Empire State Building , therefore freeing up more of your time. It also helps that for Christmas, the observatory has been transformed into a mountainside Onederland complete with cozy red and white sleighs, a faux fireplace, and cozy gingerbread decor. Be sure to bring your camera!

After your bird’s eye views of NYC’s best sights, take a five minute walk to the nearby bird-shaped Oculus building for some of the city’s best shopping and a nostalgic Holiday Market. Booths serving everything from locally baked goods to scented candles and surrounded by Christmas trees and snowy scenery bring true holiday cheer as you end your morning.

My tip: These are the best holiday markets in NYC

1 Day in NYC at Christmas: For Lunch

For lunch we suggest the historic Gansevoort Market Food Court onsite at the Oculus, or the local favorite for salads, Sweetgreen, which is right next door.

My tip: These are the best Christmas restaurants in NYC

1 Day in NYC at Christmas: Afternoon–Brooklyn Bridge and Dumbo Holiday Market

For the afternoon of your 1 day NYC Christmas itinerary, you’ll want to squeeze in some Brooklyn sights. Luckily, the Oculus is within walking distance to the famous Brooklyn Bridge . Take the 40 minute walk across the historic bridge to Brooklyn where you’ll spend the afternoon staring in awe at the best views of the Manhattan skyline you’ll find in all of New York. Don’t worry if it’s too cold to take the walk. It’s easy to hop on a train to Brooklyn right from the Oculus. Or, if you prefer, you can take a guided bus tour of the area ( THIS is the best tour in my opinion ).

Once you get to the Dumbo neighborhood on the Brooklyn side of the bridge, you’ll want to find the iconic Manhattan Bridge spot on Washington Street for the perfect selfie with the Manhattan Bridge in the background. Or head to the Brooklyn Bridge Park on the edge of the river for breathtaking views. We also recommend stopping for hot chocolate at Jacques Torres ’ (yes that same Jacques Torres from Netflix’s popular Nailed It series) and the very artsy Dumbo Holiday Market.

1 Day in NYC at Christmas: Dinner

For dinner, we suggest the tantalizing Christmas menu at the upscale River Cafe (reservations usually required) or any of the fantastic restaurants at the 1 Hotel . For budget options, Dumbo has a Shake Shack and an excellent pizza place run by locals on Front Street.

1 Day in NYC at Christmas: Evening- Rockefeller Christmas Tree and Rockettes Christmas Show

Rockefeller Tree

As the sun disappears, New York City reveals why no other place compares at Christmas. Buildings come alive with lights, music fills the air, and the energy changes. The Rockefeller Plaza Area is the best place to take it all in. Head to the Rockefeller Tree to see one of the world’s tallest Christmas trees. Nearby, find the Saks Fifth Avenue building for a heartwarming light show . As you walk, you’ll pass holiday windows, fairly lights everywhere, and projections to warm your heart. Don’t miss DIOR (59th corner 5th Ave.), Bergdorf Goodman (5th Ave corner 58th St.), the Cartier Building (5th Ave corner 52nd St.) and the FOX News Christmas Tree (6th Ave corner 48th St.)).

2 Day Itinerary to NYC at Christmas

If you are coming to NYC for two days this Christmas or you are planning your Christmas weekend in NYC, this itinerary is for you. You’ll want to spend a day and a half exploring Manhattan and the evening of the second day exploring some fantastic Christmas lights in Brooklyn. Here’s how to do it!

2 Days in NYC at Christmas: Day 1

Morning- empire state building, macy’s christmas windows.

Start the first day of your 2 day NYC Christmas trip with a visit to the historic Empire State Building for views of every famous building in New York. Plan to spend about an hour and a half to two hours getting to the cheerfully decorated viewing decks and taking in all the sights. Look out for Central Park, the Statue of Liberty , the Brooklyn Bridge, and more. Go prepared to snap photo after photo!

Macy's Christmas Decorations

After leaving the Empire State Building, walk two minutes west to 34th Street where you’ll find Macy’s Holiday Windows, a local Christmas tradition in New York City. Admire the Christmas stories visually depicted in each window of the beloved department store while you mingle with local families out for some fun. When you’re done, this is a good area to get some shopping done as there are many budget stores in the area.

For lunch, Rib No 7 is a good option for a more upscale experience. The whole Herald Square area is also home to many casual eateries so you’ll have your pick of options on every block you pass.

Afternoon – Morgan Museum and Bryant Park’s Winter Village

Winter Village at Bryant Park

After lunch, you’ll be walking up to the picturesque Bryant Park (about a 8 minute walk from Macy’s). But first, since you have two days, we thought you could spare an hour or two to stop at one of NYC’s more manageable museums!

History buffs and book lovers will especially appreciate the treasures in the Morgan Library and Museum . Fine art, mostly with historic or academic significance, and rare books, are the highlights of this museum. But truly, anyone will appreciate the rarities in the private collections of J.P. Morgan who this museum is named for.

After leaving the Morgan, head up to Bryant Park where every Christmas, the green space transforms into a Christmassy Winter Village . Spend your afternoon wandering through delightful booths where leather goods, fashion, jewelry, Christmas ornaments and more can be bought for yourself or your loved ones. We also recommend trying out the skating at the ice skating rink right next to Bryant Park’s life-size Christmas tree.

My tip: These are the best ice rinks in NYC

For dinner, you can try some light fare at The Lodge in Winter Village or head to the Grill , also in Bryant Park, for a more substantial meal to get you ready for your evening.

Evening- Times Square, Balanchine’s Nutcracker Ballet

Times Square is one of those bucket list places you’ll want to see on your two day Christmas trip to NYC. With dizzying lights, neon billboards, and foreign sounds and smells, it’s a sensory overload any time of year. But Christmas sees the lights going into overdrive and it’s truly a spectacular sight. Spend your evening walking around and taking in the electricity in the air. Look out for famous characters like the naked cowboy, and do spend some time sitting at Duffy Square just inhaling it all.

When you’re done, head west towards the river to end the first day of your 2 day NYC Christmas itinerary with the Nutcracker Ballet, a holiday classic even New Yorkers rush to see every year.

2 Days in NYC at Christmas: Day 2

Morning- rockefeller center and christmas tree.

No Christmas trip to NYC is complete without seeing the larger than life Rockefeller Tree and Center. Start your second day admiring the tree early in the morning when it’s not too crowded. After taking in the colorful lights sparkling on the tree, head to the nearby Channel Gardens in Rockefeller Center for even more lights in the form of sparkling angels standing like guards to the garden’s water features. If you look up while sitting in the gardens, you’ll also see the Saks Fifth Avenue light show! After you’ve had your fill of sparkle, you’ll want to walk along Fifth Avenue to take in the Holiday Windows of the area.

SAKS Fifth Avenue Show

My tip: These are the best holiday lights and decorations in NYC

Rockefeller Center is home to such a delicious array of dining options that we would recommend eating there. Here are your dining options .

Afternoon–Grand Central Terminal Holiday Fair

After spending so much time outside, you’ll welcome the warmth of the Grand Central Terminal, just a ten minute walk away. But Grand Central is more than just a warm place to escape New York’s brutal winter. The Terminal is home to elegant shops and restaurants year round. But come Christmas, one of the city’s best Holiday Markets add to the charm. While you stroll through the tastefully decorated Market, look up for the famous paintings on the Terminal’s ceilings. And stop by the Campbell to have a shot of whiskey or a cocktail from their unbelievable collection.

My tip: These are the best Christmas markets in NYC

Grand Central houses some of the city’s best restaurants. We recommend The Oyster Bar or Tartinery for a more casual dinner.

Evening – Birdland Jazz Club and Dyker Heights Holiday Lights

Come evening you’ll be leaving Grand Central and walking to the off-the-beaten-track Birdland Jazz Club for one of their early evening Christmas shows. With red decor and Christmas cheer everywhere Birdland is perfect for losing yourself in some soulful music.

After the hour-long Christmas show, it will be the perfect time to head out to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for what is arguably the best display of residential Christmas lights in New York. Admire home after home decked out in red, blue and white lights and surrounded by holiday ornaments. With the homes going to lengths to outdo each other, you’re in for a real treat! Getting to Dyker Heights can be challenging so we recommend a guided bus tour to make it easier.

3 Day NYC Christmas Itinerary

With 3 days in NYC for Christmas you’ll be able to see the most quintessential NYC sights and to head to a few in the outer boroughs for a deeper experience!

3 Day NYC Christmas Itinerary: Day 1

Morning- central park and the tavern on the green christmas tree.

More movies than can be counted have taken advantage of the magical settings all over Central Park. When Christmas comes around, some of these sites get elevated into what can only be described as fairy tales. This is where you’ll start your 3 day Christmas trip to New York City.

Enter at the Harlem Meer entrance at 110 Street to see the park’s floating Christmas Trees. From there wander over to the Charles A Dana Center for more holiday lights, or head up further in the park (between 57th and 59th St.) where a romantic horse carriage ride in a carriage decked out in holiday finery can be booked with add-ons like chocolates and roses (pre-booking during the holiday season is highly suggested)! Ice skating at Wollman Rink should also be part of your plans for this morning ( My tip: These are the best ice rinks in NYC ).

And even if you don’t plan on eating there, we recommend stopping at the movie famous Tavern on The Green to see their Christmas tree and holiday decorations.

Speaking of eating, we highly recommend eating in Tavern on The Green for lunch. Or head outside the park to one of the nearby Le Pain Quotidien locations for something more casual.

Afternoon – Origami Tree at The Museum of Natural History and Columbus Circle Holiday Market

After spending a full morning outside, head to the first floor of the nearby Museum of Natural History to see their unusual origami Christmas Tree. Every year the tree has a different theme, but the themes are always related to the natural world. Past origami decorations on the tree have included dinosaurs and bugs. While there you may also want to check out the fantastic exhibitions in the world class museum. After, end your afternoon at the Columbus Circle Holiday Market where everything from holiday foods to jewelry can be had.

For dinner, head to 53rd and 9th where a local favorite for inexpensive but delicious meals, Poulette , is located. Or, walk up to Bar Boulud for a more upscale experience.

Evening- Times Square and a Broadway Christmas Play

Ending your day with a broadway show is a very New York thing to do. Before heading to one of the excellent holiday plays on Broadway, stop at Times Square for a stunning array of holiday lights and flashing billboards. The area is touristy, but no visit to New York City is complete without seeing it at least once.

My tip: These are the best broadway shows during the holiday season !

3 Day NYC Christmas Itinerary: Day 2

Morning- santa claus at top of the rock and rockefeller center.

Since New York City is the city of skyscrapers you really can’t visit and not see the most iconic ones. Day 2 of your Christmas itinerary starts with Rockefeller Center’s Top of The Rock Observatory where you’ll have less lines and an easier time getting up and down. After admiring the lighted Empire State Building and all the other icons, head to the Top Of The Rock Shop for ornaments or stop to snap a pic with Santa Claus.

Once downstairs on the street again, head to the Rockefeller Christmas Tree , another of the city’s popular holiday sights you don’t want to miss. It will be too early for the Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show, but you can sit in the Channel Gardens where the illuminated angels and twinkling trees will bring some much needed warmth in the cold. This whole area is NYC’s holiday central, so head to the Holiday Windows on Fifth Avenue, stop at the magical skating rink just below the Christmas tree, and be sure to take photos of all the twinkling installations along the way. If this sounds like a lot, you can also book a guided Holiday Tour of the area to ensure you don’t miss a thing!

After being outside for much of the morning, you’ll want to head inside to any of Rockefeller Center’s well loved restaurants for lunch.

Afternoon- Radio City Music Hall and A Rockettes Show

For your afternoon, take the short walk from Rockefeller Center to Radio City Music Hall for a backstage tour or to see an early afternoon showing of The Rockettes Show, a NYC Christmas institution that will have you dancing to the entertaining holiday selections.

My tip: These are the best Christmas shows in NYC

After your early show, try the famous Del Friscos for an unforgettable dinner. Or Toloache for something more spicy.

Evening- Holiday Train Show at New York Botanical Garden

New York City’s gardens all celebrate Christmas in a big way. This evening you will spend a few hours exploring this major one out in the Bronx . Give yourself an early start to get to it as Bronx is a good distance away from where you’ll likely be staying in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Once there, prepare to be awed by a miles long light show that transforms the garden’s wintery plants with thousands of fairy lights and illuminated installations every evening.

After taking in the lights, explore the miniature renditions of New York City’s buildings and the trains chugging around them in the onsite train show. If you’ve never seen a Holiday Train Show, this one is highly recommended.

3 Day NYC Christmas Itinerary: Day 3

Morning- shine bright light show at hudson yards and winter lights at the high line.

It takes a lot to impress local New Yorkers and the Christmas lights at Hudson Yards have managed to do that. You’ll be ending your 3 days NYC Christmas trip with a bang by joining them at this dazzling light show at Hudson Yards . Walk through a forest of twinkling trees for a magical experience. Head inside the mall for millions of lights everywhere and a suspended hot air balloon also adorned with fairy lights. Whatever you do, do not forget your camera or phone!

Steffen at Shine Bright Only at Hudson Yards

After leaving Hudson Yards, head to the nearby High Line Park for a modern take on holiday lights. High Line Park’s reflective holiday lighting installations are as inventive as the first-of-its kind park and sure to have you smiling.

The famous Chelsea Market is close by. We suggest having lunch in one of their excellent eateries!

Afternoon – Holiday Harbor Cruise.

This afternoon you’ll be heading from Chelsea Market up to Chelsea Piers where you’ll be winding down your trip with a relaxing Holiday Harbor Cruise around New York City. See the city from the comfort of a well decorated yacht where you’ll be served cocktails or hot chocolate and dinner, depending on the cruise you choose.

The 2023 Guide to Christmas in NYC

Here’s a little secret that New Yorkers don’t want you to know about them. Around the holiday season, even inhabitants of the greatest city in the world get FOMO when they see photos of people taking in touristy holiday sights. It’s why locals contribute to traffic on Fifth Avenue by asking the cab driver to slow down so they can catch a glimpse of the windows at Bergdorf’s and the tree in Rockefeller Center.

There is no place on Earth that captures the excitement of the holidays quite like New York. From the step-off time at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to the famous Times Square ball drop on New Year’s Eve–and the six weeks in between–The Big Apple is a sparkling treasure chest of attractions and activities that capture the imagination with the spirit of the season. It’s what attracts over 6.5 million visitors each year to pack Gotham’s streets, theaters, restaurants, and shops and warms the hearts of the city’s famously curmudgeonly residents.

This year, the holiday season lasts roughly 40 days. That means if you want to capture all that New York has to offer, you only have 640 hours to accomplish it–even less if you haven’t finished your holiday gift shopping! We’ve put together a list of 10 must-see New York City holiday activities for both first-timers and repeat attendees alike. So whether you’re a lifelong New Yorker who wants to feel like a kid, or if you’re coming in for the holidays for the first time, this list of attractions will make you feel merry and bright. Now put on your scarves and gloves and hit those city streets!

Rockefeller Center

A New York City tradition for 90 years, the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center draws an estimated 125 million visitors each year. This year’s tree will be an 80-year-old 80-foot-tall Norway Spruce from Vestal, New York. The 12-ton tree will be wrapped in over five miles of 50,000 LED lights, and topped with a Swarovski star that weighs a reported 900 pounds. Visiting time to see the tree starts at 6 a.m. and goes to midnight.

Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular

Also, celebrating 90 years in midtown is New York’s most famous holiday show. This 90-minute extravaganza features snow, ice skating, breathtaking 3-D effects, a massive LED screen, a double-decker tour bus, live animals, a living nativity, and a flying Santa. But the real stars of the show are the 70 high-kicking Rockettes who, while split into two casts, perform up to five times a day. Tickets for all performances between November 17 and January 1 are on sale now.

Saks Fifth Avenue

For nearly two decades, New York’s famed luxury department store has been presenting one of the city’s most fabulous events for free to the public. Each year, weeks of overnight labor through the month of October magically transforms the seven-floor facade of the landmarked store into a spectacular holiday-themed light show that runs every ten minutes from 5 p.m. until midnight.

Macy’s Santaland

Every department store and mall has a Santa, but if you want the OG Santa experience, there is only Macy’s Herald Square. With 13,000 square feet of lights, snow, animatronics, and trainsets, Macy’s Santaland on the eighth floor of the 34th Street flagship store is a bucket list must for children of all ages. You may wonder how the busiest man in December sees over a quarter million people every year in the world’s largest store. Christmas magic, of course! But you’ll need a reservation .

Ice Skating

No matter what the weather, if you want to get on the ice during the holidays, you’ve got options in New York. From the pricey but iconic Rink at Rockefeller Center to the Bank of America Winter Village in Bryant Park (where it’s free if you bring your own skates), Gotham has no shortage of ice skating opportunities for all budgets. The best thing is most rinks in New York have backdrops worthy of Instagrammable moments. Skate in Central Park’s Wollman Rink with the skyline overhead, or skate under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge with unmatched views of downtown. Or travel to the 100th floor of Hudson Yards for New York City’s highest skating rink and take in the best views of the city!

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Wollman Rink (@wollmanrinknyc)

Nutcracker(s)

There is only one place in the Big Apple where audiences can see: a Christmas tree magically grow from 12 to 40 feet, a giant toy nutcracker do battle with rat king, 50 pounds of snowfall, and a host of children emerge from a giant hoop skirt. A cultural staple of the season, the New York City Ballet Company’s annual production of “George Ballanchine’s The Nutcracker” has been delighting audiences to Thaichovky’s crowd pleaser since 1954. It’s a terrific excuse to dress up the little ones for their first trip to Lincoln Center. Tickets go fast, so reserve now. For those looking for more naughty and less nice, take a trip out to Bushwick Brooklyn for a performance of “ Nutcracker Rouge ”– a 21-and-over treatment of the holiday classic. Now in its 13th year, this unique blend of burlesque, cirque, classical dance, and yuletide debauchery is the perfect date night activity for when the children are nestled all snug in their beds.

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

Brooklynites have never liked being outdone by Manhattan. So, in the 1980s a resident of the southwestern Brooklyn neighborhood of Dyker Heights set out to create a spectacular display on her house and front lawn. Neighbors followed suit, and now an estimated 100,000 people flock to the historic streets to see one home outdo the other with enough ornaments and lights to earn this otherwise quiet enclave the nickname “Con Edison’s Warmest Heartthrob.” Looking to visit? Here’s a caveat. Traffic is crazy; parking is next to impossible. The subway is the only way to go. Take the D train to 79th Street and New Utrecht Ave in Brooklyn. Wear comfortable shoes because it’s a 15-minute walk to 13th Avenue where the fun starts.

Holiday Train Show

Every year for two months starting in November, the conservatory of the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, with its iconic enormous glass dome plays host to one of the city’s most creative and beloved holiday traditions . See scale models of over 200 New York City Landmarks made out of organic materials while 25 model trains zip by on over a half-mile of G-scale tracks. The fun continues outdoors at the NYBG’s stunning outdoor light show. Fans of adult beverages can reserve tickets for special Bar Car Nights.

Urban Space Markets

What’s more fun than shopping al fresco during the holidays? Each year ,three of New York’s most beloved green spaces are turned into festive destinations with hundreds of stalls operated by artisans selling everything from hand puppets to handbags, high-end dog sweaters to hand-knit scarves, and everything in between. Stop by locations in Columbus Circle, Bryant Park, and Union Square to shop or just enjoy the brisk air and some hot chocolate.

Bonus: Brooklyn’s Largest Hanukkah Menorah Lighting

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a 32-feet-high Hanukkah menorah lit by a giant broom. A New York City tradition since 1985, the 4,000-pound steel structure has been drawing thousands nightly to Grand Army Plaza for eight nights of gifts, live music, hot latkes, and fun - all free of charge!

Updated 2023: new york city holiday travel guide.

There really is no place quite like New York City during the holiday season. Something about Christmas time is just so magical, and the city really decides to show off in every neighborhood. After my mom and I’s annual holiday in the city weekend, I wanted to update this post (originally from 2019) to reflect any changes post-pandemic and share 2023 recommendations.

There are so many amazing things to do during the holidays and this year is better than ever with with tried-and-true activities returning in addition to newness. I seriously love Christmas season SO MUCH! If you have the chance and the means this season, I suggest supporting small, local businesses and restaurants during the holidays while in the city. Additionally, there are many ways to get involved in the NYC community and give back this holiday season (resources available to get started here ), as well.

UPDATED CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK ITINERARY (2023 EDITION): This year was unique from previous years because we had an extra day with my mom arriving on Wednesday. This truly gave us SO much time to do and see everything. The weather wasn’t on our side the whole time with two rainy days, but we made the most of it. Next year I would like more downtime – we were almost TOO booked & busy – but still a great weekend nonetheless.

WEDNESDAY: Dinner at Ambra in West Village followed by ice cream at Van Leeuwen across the street. Peppermint Mocha Espresso Martinis at the Starbucks Reserve in Meatpacking (the bar is on the second floor). If you want to “go out” like my mom and I did (AKA find somewhere open past 11 on a Wednesday), you can do drinks at the Gansevoort Hotel Rooftop followed by sitting at the bar at Entwine.

THURSDAY: Start at Lotte New York Palace hotel to admire the tree and decor (first year it is back up post-covid) to get a photo at the tree. Shopping at The Shops at Columbus Circle (stores like H&M, Stuart Weitzman, MAC, J. Crew, Jo Malone, & more), and appetizers at the Porterhouse Grill for amazing views of Central Park + Columbus Circle. Lillie’s Victorian for afternoon tea – one of the most decked out restaurants in the city – they only serve tea/tea-related pastries/sandiwches and cocktails from 2-4pm. Stroll through the Union Square Market or stop in shops near Flatiron like H&M, Zara, Abercrombie, Sephora, & more. Dinner at Tavern on the Green to admire the tree in the “backyard” of the restaurant, right in Central Park. If ambitious, drinks at Ophelia near Grand Central.

FRIDAY: Walk in at Bubby’s in Tribeca for breakfast around 10/10:30am. You’ll have to wait in line but if you opt for bar or outdoor seating you’ll get seated faster. Shop through SoHo before making your way to Union Square. Pete’s Tavern to admire the red Christmas lights, you can get appetizers as a walk in to sit in the dining area – it’s not as decorated as the front, but still cute. Alternatively, you can try Rolf’s right when it opens at noon for drinks, but if you’re coming post-Thanksgiving just know that it will be hard to get in. Dinner at Boucherie – any of the locations will be festive and solid food. I can’t get over the giant Christmas tree they have at all locations. Head uptown for the Radio City Rockette’s Christmas Spectacular. We do this every other year and it’s just so cute. After, stop by the Rockefeller Center tree (if it’s late enough it won’t be crowded), catch the Saks Light Show + window displays. Walk down 5th Avenue and see the decor for all of the storefronts and if Bergdorfs is open, go to the seventh floor for their holiday decor – mainly the iconic ornaments.

SATURDAY: Walk the High Line for brunch at Zou Zou’s in Hudson Yards. The decor isn’t festive but the food is great and there is an ice rink right outside, across from Hudson Yards. Head to Hudson Yards to check out the lights and decor and do some shopping (stores like Lululemon, H&M, Zara, Alo, Madewell). Drinks at Queensyard – very festive but if you just sit at the tables near the bar note that the service is not great. We were EXHAUSTED and just did dinner at Shake Shack lol. They have a chocolate peppermint shake for the holidays!

SUNDAY: Brunch at Via Carota (sign up on resy notify for notifications on reservations or try walking in when they open and sit at the bar). Walk around West Village and see the festive stoops and outdoor decor.

From Previous Years: Sharing a list of things my mom and I recently did at the beginning of December 2021 since so many people asked! Friday: Apps + drinks at The Standard Grill, dinner at Rosemary’s, Radio City Rockette’s Christmas Spectacular, Rockefeller Tree, Upstairs at The Kimberly Hotel for drinks + late night. Saturday: Brunch at Barbuto (SO SO SOOO good), Hudson Yards Lights + shopping (Zara, H&M, Sephora), Electric Lemon for sunset cocktails, Pete’s Tavern for dinner to see the holiday decor. Sunday: Brunch at Lavaux Wine Bar with fondue, Bryant Park Winter Village for fried pickles + drinks at The Lodge Bar, Dinner at Lure Fish Bar, Holiday Cookies from Chip City + walk through West Village.

Where to find the Christmas trees: We all know and love those Christmas tree shots that everyone gets. What people may not know is how difficult it can be to get the shot! Get there early early (like 7AM) if you want next to no one in the background.

Rockefeller Christmas Tree: The iconic New York Christmas tree in the middle of Rockefeller Center. It’s truly bigger than life itself and a MUST see. Pro tip: You’ll actually want to be further away for the best shot.

Lotte New York Palace: A blogger Christmas staple, the tree in the courtyard is an iconic scene. Little do people realize, the entire lobby/inside is so thematic that you can take so many pictures there in just an hour! They also let you change in the bathroom since it’s so chilly.

Washington Square Park: A tree underneath the arch in the NYU park, this is another site that’s always buzzing. A great change of scenery.

Hotels along 5th Avenue: Pop in, warm up, and enjoy the lobby decor and Christmas trees all around.

Bryant Park: The classic winter village is home to a few trees, one of which being right outside of the bar.

Gramercy Park: While you may not be able to access it, the luxury park is home to a very large tree at the center.

Madison Square Park: Located on the north end is this giant beauty (and usually a little winter village).

South Street Seaport: Home to a tree along the many different restaurants and bars along the Seaport area. I’m sure Pier 17 will have some sort of display as well.

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights:

How to get there: Take the N/R line to Bay Ridge Parkway and you’re right there. It’s also a 30 minute taxi/uber ride so it’s not too hard to get to. Pro tip: bring spiked hot chocolate or wine in a water bottle while you walk around.

Tips: You can do a full blown tour (see here ) that drives you through all of the spots on a bus/in the heat. Wear comfy shoes if you’re just going with some friends! You’ll have to wait a bit to get the right photo, but it’s definitely worth it. Make sure your phone is charged or bring a portable charger!

Winter Village in Bryant Park: A classic, New York spot with everything in one. Shop the little shops, skate at the ice rink, check out the bar at the lodge OR try one of the many food stops. This is great to go to after work or on a week night. They also have mulled wine and Bud Light so there’s something for everyone.

Places to eat/drink:

Serra by La Birreria: The seasonal rooftop in Eataly that’s always so Instagrammable. Sometimes the food can be subpar, so I recommend going for an afternoon cocktail or apps.

Rolf’s: The Christmas Mecca in Kips Bay, this German restaurant/bar has been around for ages. The food is pricey so I recommend going for happy hour or right when it opens. I crave their Christmas Martini year round.

Paddy Maguires: Right by Rolf’s and a knock off version, this bar is packed with Christmas decor and gives Rolf’s a run for its money (at half the price).

Rosemary’s + Roey’s : Owned by the same company – these quaint West Village spots feel like a ski lodge in the winter. Go for wine and pizza/pasta with some friends during a chilly day.

The Standard Grill: Has a super cute outdoor area with tons of Christmas trees, indoor decor and mulled wine + espresso martinis.

Mari Vanna: The most random Russian tea room I stumbled upon a few years ago with my parents. They have so many infused vodkas and have vodka flights!

Serendipity 3: Newly revamped post-covid, Serednipity is a solid staple and one of my favorite stops to begin with. I always get the frozen hot chocolate but the food is great too!

Lauvaux Wine Bar: Equipped with a little ski gondola that’s perfect for the season and a photo while you’re at it!

Refinery Rooftop: An indoor rooftop with a super cozy indoor lodge feel. Great views of Empire State as well!

Oscar Wilde: A gem of a place I walk past everyday that is decked out for the holidays always, it even has a giant moving bear on top of the door! Sister restaurant Lillie’s Victorian also has the same vibes.

Papillon Bistro & Bar : Two stories decked out with decor & lights. Dine or just get drinks here.

Electric Lemon: Not seasonal decor wise, but the perfect escape after shopping at Hudson Yards or seeing the lights near the Vessel. My mom and I stayed for sunset and got amazing views (and amazing espresso martinis).

Igloos @ 230 Fifth: Don’t get me wrong, I try to avoid this place but something about the igloos on a rooftop with a great view of Empire State is so quintessential NYC Christmas! Pricier but the view is worth it and they give you blankets.

Winter Garden @ The Standard East Village: More teepee style igloos, again such a cute spot to grab mulled wine.

Snowday in Brooklyn: The cutest spot in Williamsburg with a ski lodge pop up for the season including festive drinks!

The Junction: A super festive, low key spot that is a must see for the season.

Miracle on 8th + 9th Street (The Cabinet & Mace Bar): A festive (pricier) spot for drinks with all things holiday season including Santa mugs!

Winter Wonderland at Watermark Bar : such a fun time to get an igloo, some fondue and enjoy all of the lights on the water!

Sippin Santa at Boilermaker: A very fun thematic (tropical) Christmas oasis!

The Garret Feliz Cocteleria Pop Up: Always beyond equipped for the season, they have opened a festive affair for the winter time.

City Winery Winter Igloos: Locations on the West Side Highway and Rockefeller Center to snag an igloo and some seasonal treats.

Rooftop Cabins at The Greens @ Pier 17: A great way to stay warm, see the Brooklyn bridge and enjoy company!

Igloos at Mr. Purple: A fun night spot that would be great to grab an igloo with a group of friends or colleagues.

Lillie’s Victorian Union Square: Owned by the same group as Oscar Wilde, the decor is spot on with a very solid menu.

Pete’s Tavern: In Gramercy is the cutest little bar with so many lights! We went for dinner so that we could sit down in the back and got in faster.

Ophelia : For drinks or light fare – truly a gorgeous setting.

Jingle Jangle at Dead Rabbit: Another bar that decks out for the holidays and has festive drinks.

L’Avenue at Saks : For the best view of the Rockefeller Tree without the madness.

Boucherie : Any location will be festive and french food is perfect for a cold day.

Santacon: Something I feel like everyone needs to do once, this day in New York is when everyone dresses as Santa and goes on one giant bar crawl. My friends and I (used to) start in Murray Hill and rarely make it past East Village. It’s just a fun way to spend a Saturday with friends, but definitely come prepared and ready to party. As you get older people start doing house parties instead of bar crawling, but be prepared for traffic to be a MESS. Also note, some bars have restrictions against letting in anyone participating in Santacon.

Bars to go to during Santacon (some have covers day of): -Penny Farthing -Gem Saloon -Blue Haven -Brother Jimmy’s -310 Bowery

More things to see + do: While there are so many options I do each year, there’s so much else you have to do/see! Whether you’re coming for a long weekend or the full week, you can map out the spots you want to hit to maximize your time.

Holiday Cruises around Manhattan: Whether you’re looking for cocoa and carols aboard a retro style boat, or a quick sail around the Hudson – there are so many options to see the sites and stay warm.

Visit Tiffany & Co. Holiday Pop Up in West Village: Right across from new spot Nat’s on Bank, Tiffany’s is hosting a festive pop up this holiday season that is reminiscent of a holiday jewel box.

See the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular: It’s officially back and better than ever! Buy tickets now and really experience the holidays.

Light Display at Hudson Yards: Experience some major holiday lights at the newer establishment. They deck out the mall and the outdoor area with so many pretty lights and displays.

Pinkmas at The Museum of Ice Cream: The perfect thing to do to stay warm while getting some Instagram photos as well.

Window Displays at Bergdorf Goodman, SAKs, & Macy’s: The visual merchandisers work so hard on these months out, and it really shows. You have to check it out once you’re around Rockefeller or shopping on 5th.

Central Park Ice Rink: Another great spot to hit the ice, they have a smaller scale winter village area surrounding the rink.

SAKs Light Show: They have this running on a timer and you’ll definitely want to catch it. The lights out front play a quick show every 10 minutes.

The Plaza Hotel: The inside is absolutely gorgeous and they do their due diligence to make up for the outside being unavailable. You can also stop by the food court area downstairs for some snacks.

Stroll down 5th Avenue/Herald Square: Take a look at the different lights they bring out, specifically the infamous Cartier store that looks like a present.

Check out the decorations in West Village: Always one of the cutest spots during the fall/winter, just strolling down during the day makes me so happy! You can find a hole in the wall to pop in for a drink or quick bite, too.

Bronx Zoo Lights: Something I haven’t done but we hope to do this year, they decorate the zoo with Christmas lights!

Luminocity Festival: Again, I think this one is new. It’s basically a giant light festival on Randall’s Island and looks so unique.

What to wear/pack: The one thing you have to keep in mind about the city (especially during the winter months) is that the buildings make it even colder and the wind chill is brutal. It may not snow in December, but you definitely need to bundle up! Covering your ears/hands is a must, and I typically forego the cute winter look for comfortable and warm. Linking some winter wear that would work below!

Christmas 2023 in New York: what to do, practical info and tips

time square

1 - Attend themed events

New York is probably the best city in the world to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere. Malls and shopping streets are decked out for the holiday and special events take place all over the city.

Best of all, the festivities here begin in November with Thanksgiving Day, during which the Macy's Thanksgiving Par ade is held, featuring performers, marching bands and beautiful floats.

Another iconic event is the Tree-Lighting Ceremony , or the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Rocafeller Center , at which concerts and shows are broadcast live on national television. The lighting generally takes place in early December.

Also worth mentioning is the traditional Radio City Christmas Spectacular , a historic dance performance by the Rockettes (the world's most famous synchronised dancer troupe), which has been organised every year at Christmas since 1933.

2 - Visit the New York Christmas markets

mercatini(2)

Some of the most beautiful and characteristic markets include the Union Square Holiday Market (Union Square at 14th Street, Southern Side - get directions), the Grand Central Holiday Fair (Grand Central Terminal, 89 E 42nd St - get directions ) and the Winter Village at Bryant Park (located at Bryant Park, between 5th and 6th Avenues and 40th and 42nd Streets - Get directions ).

3 - Ice skating

/foto/central park new york pista pattinaggio

And when you get tired of skating, you can sit on the edge of the rink and watch the kids having the time of their lives while sipping a hot chocolate or glass of wine, or you can enjoy the Christmas music (often played by live bands)

4 - Meet Father Christmas at Macy's

/foto/new york villaggio babbo natale macys

If you are visiting NYC with children, you absolutely cannot deny them this unforgettable experience. The line to see Father Christmas is rather long, but you can book online on the chain's website .

5 - Admiring the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center

/foto/rockefeller center new york a natale

6 - Enjoy a Broadway musical

musical broadway

7 - Admiring the lights in the Dyker Heights district

/foto/dyker brooklin luci di natale

8 - Taste the Christmas specialities

biscotti di natale

Christmas gastronomic traditions in New York are more about sweets . During the winter holiday season, it is customary to eat specialities such as Gingerbread men biscuits , Apple Pie, Pumpkin pie, cupcakes with Christmas-themed decorations, eggnog (liquid eggnog flavoured with vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon), Christmas pudding (pudding with dried fruit and brandy) and Mince pies, which are traditionally left on the chimney so that Father Christmas can eat them during his night-time visits.

Which museums and attractions remain open?

/foto/empire state building di sera

Other major attractions open on Christmas Eve include the Empire State Building, the 9-11 Memorial and the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum . SEE ALSO : What to see in New York

What means of transport are available?

Metro, buses and other transport operate on special timetables the week of Christmas. Generally, services are guaranteed on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, but there are no services on 25 December . On the website of the MTA, the New York City Transit Authority, you will find all the necessary information regarding service changes during the festive period.

Getting around : The best way to get around is by underground. A single ride costs $3, but we recommend purchasing a Metrocard (valid for underground and bus) at a cost of about $31 for 7 days.

Useful passes and cards : we recommend purchasing the New York City Pass , a cumulative ticket that includes line-free entry to six of the city's major attractions including the Statue of Liberty and MoMA

Weather in New York at Christmas

new york citt c3 a0 manhattan centrale

Thermal excursion : you will most likely find a 'tropical' climate inside rooms and shops due to the heaters being 'cranked up to maximum'. Therefore prepare for the temperature hike by dressing in layers.
