La storia d’amore tra Pat Metheny e l’Italia prosegue. Lo storico chitarrista jazz , tra i più importanti artisti in ambito fusion, ha annunciato proprio in questi giorni un nuovo appuntamento in Italia nel 2023. Andiamo a scoprire tutti i dettagli sul live del chitarrista americano in supporto del suo progetto Side-Eye .

Il grande Pat, artista con cui aveva avuto modo di lavorare anche il nostro Pino Daniele , sarà nuovamente di scena in Italia nell’estate del 2023, nel tabellone di uno dei più importanti festival del nostro paese.

La data da segnare con un circoletto rosso sul calendario è il 17 luglio 2023 . L’appuntamento è al Lucca Summer Festival. I biglietti per il concerto sono disponibili sul circuito TicketOne e in tutti i punti vendita autorizzati.

Parlando di questo nuovo progetto e del tour di accompagnamento, Metheny ha dichiarato che ha voluto fortemente creare un’ ambientazione continua per presentare un cast rotante di musicisti emergenti che hanno catturato il suo interesse lungo il percorso musicale degli ultimi anni, ma anche precedente.

“ Mi sono sentito come se volessi anche io creare una piattaforma per lavorare specificatamente su alcuni dei musicisti più giovani che mi sono piaciuti recentemente “, ha aggiunto Metheny, che ha ammesso di ascoltare regolarmente la musica degli artisti più giovani, quelli che hanno subito un’ influenza dai suoi dischi e dalle sue melodie. Non a caso, spesso li invita a suonare a casa sua, e il loro feeling è qualcosa di molto naturale, essendo cresciuti con la sua musica.

Insomma, non sarà un concerto come un altro quello che ci aspetta nel luglio del 2023, e la speranza è che possa essere replicato anche in altre città d’Italia, per la gioia di tutti i suoi fan e della sua grande musica.

Bio e Storia di Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny è un chitarrista e compositore jazz statunitense nato a Lee’s Summit, Missouri, il 12 agosto 1954. Considerato uno dei chitarristi jazz più famosi e apprezzati ancora in attività, è stato leader del suo gruppo, il Pat Metheny Group, dal 1977 al 2010. Continua a lavorare in vari progetti musicali, spaziando da formazioni in piccolo ensemble a duetti e progetti solisti.

Metheny proviene da una famiglia con una forte passione per la musica. Suo padre suonava la tromba, sua madre cantava e il nonno materno era un trombettista professionista. Iniziò a suonare la tromba all’età di otto anni, ma a dodici anni passò alla chitarra, strumento che lo avrebbe reso celebre. Il suo talento si sviluppò rapidamente e già a quindici anni suonava regolarmente con i migliori musicisti jazz di Kansas City.

Metheny è stato un innovatore nel panorama della chitarra jazz. Ha sperimentato con suoni e tecniche all’avanguardia, incorporando elementi di rock, folk e world music nel suo stile. È stato tra i primi musicisti jazz ad abbracciare la tecnologia musicale, utilizzando il Synclavier come strumento di composizione ben prima dell’invenzione del MIDI.

Fondato nel 1977, il Pat Metheny Group ha pubblicato numerosi album di successo che hanno ottenuto consensi sia dalla critica che dal pubblico. An ensemble of soloists!

My first time seeing Pat Metheny live exceeded all expectations (which were pretty high).

Love his generous identification and specific descriptions of Marcus Gilmore (@drummerslams on IG) and James Francies (@jamesfrancies88 on IG).

Sony Hall is a terrific venue, redolent of old New York. Terrific partnership of Sony & Blue Note.

We had an awesome time. Trio was magnificent. It was more than we expected. I loved his 42-string Pikasso guitar. James Francies and Nate Smith together with Pat were amazing. Wherever we are in this world, hope to see them many times over. Thank you Pat Metheny Group for a memorable concert. Bless you all.

Probably my favorite contemporary guitarist.TIve seen jim 6 times and will see him Monday in Eugene.He did all old songs with basically a jazz comoboMosy of the songs were recognizable by me and I think most of the audience which were obviously die hard Pats fans. GUITAR g playing was virtuoso and his played his most popular song with different arrangements.His band was absolute a knockout of playing incredible music by a contemporary jazz man.

R.I.P. Lyle Mays (1953-2020)

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of our friend and brother, Lyle Mays (1953-2020). He passed today in Los Angeles after a long battle with a recurring illness, surrounded by loved ones.

Pat Metheny Begins Extensive North American Dream Box Tour Sep 13, Featuring Music From All His Solo Recordings

(August 2023 – Press Release) — After a globe-trotting 33-stop tour this past spring and summer with his Side-Eye band, legendary American guitarist, composer and improviser Pat Metheny takes to the road again, this time as a solo act, beginning on September 13 in Homer, NY.

With currently scheduled coast-to-coast performances in 51 venues across 29 states and more to be added in March and April 2024, by the end of the Dream Box tour in 2024 Metheny will have given at least 76 performances of the program in the United States. The tour gives him the chance to explore his approach to being a solo performer in both traditional and unorthodox ways in the kinds of intimate venues that will offer audiences an absolutely unique concert experience:

“I’m really looking forward to doing this pretty significant tour that will just be me. I’m going to draw on all my solo records, from New Chautauqua on, and I’ve written a lot of that kind of material: narrative, storytelling, with expositional-type improvising. I did a test run of solo concerts a couple years ago and I really, really enjoyed it. It’s going to be something quite different for me, that intimate relationship. I think I’ll probably actually talk some on the gig, which I generally don’t like to do, but it sort of fits with what this evening will be.” Pat Metheny

Metheny has produced a catalog of recordings that, measured in terms of influence, is in a class by itself: 50 recordings that have won 20 Grammys in twelve different categories. New Chautauqua (1979) almost single-handedly defined an era of instrumental steel-stringed Americana that spawned legions of imitators. Zero Tolerance for Silence pushed the boundaries of modern music-making once again and served as a companion piece to the Grammy-winning disc Secret Story. The Orchestrion Project – for which Metheny wrote the music and built a series of instruments to be controlled by his guitar, recording the results both in the studio and in a live concert – was so new in conception and execution that even a decade-plus later, it still stands apart from any previous ideas of what a solo performer might achieve alone onstage.

Alongside those projects was yet another stream of development: two back-to-back, Grammy-winning solo baritone guitar recordings: One Quiet Night and What’s It All About , the predecessors to Dream Box . Not only do they shine as pure solo guitar recordings, but they also introduced an entirely new tuning system that allowed Metheny to create an almost orchestral range, from bass to soprano, within the realm of a simple steel six-string guitar.

Jazz Concert Review: PAT METHENY (Dream Box Tour at Royce Hall, UCLA)

PAT ON THE BACK

When one thinks of the always-inventive and distinctive guitarist Pat Metheny , it is generally of the great bands he has had (including the Pat Metheny Group with the late Lyle Mays on keyboards and the Unity Band with Chris Potter), his recordings with bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist John Scofield, and of his appearances with all-star groups. But when he appeared at Royce Hall for a 2 ½ hour set, it was quite a bit different.

Pat Metheny was the only musician onstage. While there were times when he used electrical devices that allowed him to spontaneously create parts that he soloed over, it was essentially a colorful one-man show. It is to his great credit that he never lost the audience’s attention.

Metheny started off with a medley of his compositions on acoustic guitar which he played at a relaxed and thoughtful tempo. He remembered Haden and the Beyond The Missouri duet album that they made together by playing a medley of tunes from the intimate project (including the bassist’s “First Song”). A brief departure from the quiet music took place when he suddenly switched to a thunderous free-form piece but then things calmed down when he played an orchestral number on his 42-string Picasso guitar. He performed a medley of mostly standards on the baritone guitar (including “Alfie,” “Rainy Days and Mondays” and “The Girl from Ipanema”), and then he jammed on a medium-tempo blues, adding other instruments including a rhythm guitar and a walking bass. Quite intriguing was the guitarist’s work with his Orchestrion, magically creating his own orchestra.

While Pat Metheny rarely speaks on stage, the night at Royce Hall was an exception. During the first half of the evening he talked quite a bit including about his early days, his period with Gary Burton, his memories of Charlie Haden, and the different guitars that he uses. I wish that he had continued talking during the second half for he did not say anything about his band with Lyle Mays or any of a dozen other interesting topics, but it was nice to hear him reminisce a bit.

Pat Metheny can always be relied upon to put on stimulating, virtuosic and surprising shows. That has been true of his performances during the past 50 years and it was certainly true of his solo night at Royce Hall.

Pat Metheny will perform on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, starting with 9.30 pm, in Piazza del Castello, in Udine , as part of the Udin&Jazz Festival 2023 .

Pat Metheny’s style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, latin jazz, and jazz fusion. He has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards.

As a solo artist, his discography consists of 11 studio albums, 4 live albums, 3 soundtracks and 4 compilation albums. With the Pat Metheny Group, he released 12 albums.

UDIN&JAZZ FESTIVAL

Udin&Jazz is one of the most important jazz festivals in Europe. The festival is organized by Euritmica, a non-profit cultural association born in Udine in 1997 from the enthusiasm of a group of jazz lovers.

During over 30 years of history, the Udin&Jazz Festival hosted artists such as Max Roach, Stan Getz, Jim Hall, James Brown, Cassandra Wilson, Michael Brecker, Joe Zawinul, B.B. King, Charles Lloyd, Archie Shepp, Dionne Warwick, Paul Simon, Chris Cornell, and Mario Biondi.

The main venue of the Udin&Jazz Festival 2023 is Piazzale del Castello. Located near the historical Castle of Udine, Piazzale del Castello draws large crowds for the live concerts and performances hosted here in the summer.

The Castle of Udine is located on top of a hill in the historical center of the city. The castle is home to the civic museums of Udine, such as the Archaeological and Numismatic Museum, the Risorgimento Museum, the Drawings and Prints Gallery, and the Friulian Museum of Photography.

Piazzale del Castello is located about 1.3 kilometers away from the Udine railway station. The closest bus stop is Castello di Udine , located near the square, on the bus Line M.

In Fall 2023, twenty-time Grammy-winning guitarist & composer Pat Metheny is launching a solo tour that will coincide with a new album release, Dream Box.  The tour, a first of its kind for Metheny, will feature personal and fan favorites from his nearly 50-year career.

Metheny says “A few years back, I did a short run of concerts that were not exclusively me and a single guitar, but pretty close. I loved it. Of course, I always have to take it somewhere else too, which by the end of those performances, I did manage to do (no spoilers here!), but what I have planned for the tour following the release of my new recording  Dream Box , is something different for me, focused on the various ways of playing solo I have explored across all these decades in an evening that I think will be very special."

Think about these recordings;  New Chautauqua  - a 1979 recording that almost single-handedly defined an era of instrumental steel-stringed Americana;  Zero Tolerance For Silence  - a shot across the bow of modern music making, the companion piece to parallel the Grammy-winning disc  Secret Story ;  The Orchestrion Project , a project so outrageous in conception and execution that even a decade-plus later, it stands apart from any previous ideas of what a solo performer might achieve alone onstage.

And then consider and contrast those projects to the two back-to-back Grammy-winning solo baritone guitar recordings,  One Quiet Night  and  What's It All About . Those recordings are not only among the most gorgeous pure solo guitar recordings, but they also introduced an entirely new tuning system that allowed Metheny to create an almost orchestral range from bass to soprano within the realm of a simple steel 6-string guitar.
