Why is Lombok Pink Beach – PINK?

Ever wonder about the captivating pink hue of Lombok Pink Beach’s sands? The secret to this enchanting colour lies in a delicate dance between crushed red coral and pristine white sand—a natural masterpiece.

The scientific explanation is fascinating. The pink colour comes from the presence of microscopic organisms called Foraminifera, which have reddish-pink shells.

These tiny organisms live in the coral reefs surrounding the beach. When the red coral breaks down into small particles and mixes with the white sand, it creates a distinct pink pigment.

It’s like a natural alchemy, where the interaction of these elements results in the breathtaking palette that defines Lombok Pink Beach.

This unique blend of colours is more than just eye candy; it’s a testament to the intricate, natural processes that transform an ordinary stretch of coastline into a mesmerizing canvas of pink perfection!

There’s something extra sweet about pink-sand beaches. These striking coastal stretches usually get their hue from crushed coral or fragments of red and pink shells. Some of the most famous pink beaches — like the shores of Harbour Island in the Bahamas or Pantai Merah on Indonesia’s Komodo Island — are created from a species of foraminifera, a microscopic organism, with reddish shells.

Many of these colorful coastlines are found in equally picturesque locales, from Greece to the Caribbean to French Polynesia. Your glasses won’t have to be rose-colored to see these beautiful pink beaches around the world. Here are 11 of our favorites.

Elafonissi Beach, Crete, Greece

Ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world , Elafonissi Beach lies on the southwest coast of Crete and is famous for its pink sands created by colorful microorganisms and pieces of coral. When the tide is low, you can even wade out to a small island and protected nature reserve off the coast. For an all-inclusive stay while on Crete, check into the family-friendly Kiani Beach Resort .

Pantai Merah, Komodo Island, Indonesia

Aside from being home to the world’s largest lizard (the Komodo dragon), Komodo Island in Indonesia boasts the stunning pink-sand beach, Pantai Merah. This vast stretch of sand shows a gradient of pink hues, which are essentially a mixture of white and red sands teeming with microscopic rose-colored marine animals. There aren't any hotels on Komodo Island, so most travelers base themselves in the town of Labuan Bajo on the nearby island of Flores. Consider staying at the luxurious Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach , which offers boat trips to Komodo Island.

Spiaggia Rosa, Isola Budelli, Italy

The sands on Spiaggia Rosa range in color from fuchsia to salmon, thanks to fossils, crushed coral, and colored stones. This idyllic pink-sand beach is located on Isola Budelli, a small island off the northern coast of Sardinia. While stepping on the shore is now off-limits because of a history of sand theft, you can still appreciate the spectacle from afar by chartering a boat. Enjoy other breathtaking vistas (and pink walls the color of some of Spiaggia Rosa's sands) at the Hotel Cala di Volpe , which is tucked into Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda region.

Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island, Bahamas

On the east side of Harbour Island, located in the Bahamas, the beaches are famous for their blush tint, the result of microscopic Foraminifera shells. Visitors will also find incredibly clear waters, making the beautiful pink-sand beaches on Harbour Island ideal for snorkeling and diving. Briland Club  provides direct access to Pink Sand Beach as well as sprawling accommodations like oceanfront residences .

Pfeiffer Beach, Los Padres National Forest, California

While driving along California’s Central Coast, you'll discover views of breathtaking mountains, the vast Pacific Ocean, and the pink sands at Pfeiffer Beach . Thousands of years of quartz and manganese from nearby rock formations have given this beach an almost purple color. Note that the beach is currently closed due to the recent flooding that has affected the area. When it does reopen, consider booking a cliffside suite at the Post Ranch Inn if you're staying in Big Sur overnight.

Playa de Ses Illetes, Formentera, Spain

On the sustainable Mediterranean island of Formentera , there is a peninsula called Es Trucadors. In addition to attracting a chic, lively crowd, this area's picturesque Playa de Ses Illetes draws visitors who want to see white sands laced with pink pieces of coral. For a quiet retreat after a day on the beach, head to the small, family-owned Es Marès Hotel & Spa .

Tikehau, French Polynesia

About an hour's flight from Tahiti, this small atoll is known for its tranquil white- and pink-sand beaches. Less than 600 people call Tikehau home, so you can look forward to a tranquil atmosphere and calm waters with abundant marine life. Stay at Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts  for direct access to pink-sand beaches. The resort offers a range of accommodations, including bungalows right on the shore with lagoon views.

Pink Beach, Bonaire

This tiny island in the southern Caribbean is known for its incredible diving and snorkeling, as well as its pretty pink-sand beach. Like several of the other picks on this list, Pink Beach gets its color from the shells of foraminifera. Stay at the Bellafonte Luxury Oceanfront Hotel Bonaire for sweeping views and quiet barefoot luxury.

Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda

With sparkling turquoise waters and a pink shore, Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the best beaches in Bermuda . Visit a nearby beach bar and take in the view with a classic rum swizzle cocktail. Or, enjoy the rosy sights whenever you want at The Reefs Resort & Club , where you can appreciate the pink sand and blue water from the balcony of your two-bedroom beachfront suite.

Pink Beach, Grande Santa Cruz Island, Philippines

The Philippines has tons of fantastic beaches with different colors of sand ranging from bright white to volcanic black. But the small island of Grande Santa Cruz Island in the southern Philippines stands out for its pink coralline sand. Make the nearby city of Zamboanga your home base with a room at the Residencia Suites Hotel . Grande Santa Cruz Island is accessible via a 15-minute boat ride from the city and welcomes a limited number of daily visitors, so it's a good idea to get your tickets early.

Crane Beach, Barbados

Located on the southeast coast of Barbados, Crane Beach is one of the prettiest pink-sand beaches in the Caribbean. The Crane Resort , originally built in 1887, overlooks the beach and its crystal-blue waters. Even better, guests in the luxury resort's private villas enjoy direct access via a set of stairs leading down to the rosy shore. The water can be choppy, so swim at your own risk or bring a boogie board to ride the waves.

Lombok's Pink Beach Private Tour

Pink Beach is one of Lombok's favorite attraction, a must to be visited while you are in Lombok. Its uniqueness is found in pink color of its sand, different from most beaches. The pink color is created from a mixture of soft white sand with fine fragments of dead red coral.

This biological event produces a truly natural blend of pink. When exposed to sea water the color appears reddish. While he was exposed to sunlight, his unique pink identity seemed very clear.

Romantic Pink Beach of the Komodo Islands

Pink Beach, or Pantai Merah, as it is aptly named, is one of seven pink beaches on the planet, and is just one of the many amazing features of Komodo Island that make it truly a Natural Wonder of Nature. This exceptional beach gets its striking color from microscopic animals called Foraminifera, which produces a red pigment on the coral reefs. For this reason, it is called Red Beach in the local tongue. When the tiny fragments of red coral combine with the white sands, this produces the soft pink color that is visible along the shoreline. Aside from Pink Beach itself, a few small segments along Komodo’s eastern bay also have a pinkish tint.

Located immediately west of Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara , Komodo Island is one of three larger and many islets that make up the Komodo National Park and is particularly well-known as the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon. The Komodo Dragon is the largest living lizard, and takes its name after the island.

Take a moment to appreciate panoramic views of turquoise seas, green rolling hills, blue skies, and fascinatingly pink sands. Aside from the obvious relaxation amidst this picture-perfect scenery, Komodo is not short of interesting activities to partake in. Once you have finished taking in the magnificent surroundings, take a dip in the waters and uncover the marine beauty that Pink Beach has to offer.

The corals of the Pink Beach’s underwater gardens are in excellent condition, with hundreds of species of both soft and hard corals, and thousands of species of fish. Pink Beach is a terrific choice for snorkelers and beginner divers as even the shallow waters are home to an abundance of species to keep you more than entertained.

Of course, there is much more to see the deeper you venture. Relax on the fairytale-like pink sands and work on your tan. Or join in with the various other available water sports such as kayaking or just having a leisurely swim. If photography is your passion, this is definitely a place to try your hand at capturing the stunning natural beauty of the island. And make sure you stick around till sunset, as the view is amazing. A few points to keep in mind is that this is an uninhabited island, and it also is the natural habitat of the Komodo Dragon. If you see the creatures roaming the coast or in the water, be sure to keep a distance. Komodo Dragons are excellent swimmers and are even capable of swimming inter-island. Komodo Dragons are wild animals that could be potentially dangerous to people, so it is not recommended to visit this beach without the help of an experienced guide or ranger.

The best route to the Komodo National Park is most definitely through Bali. As one of the most popular destinations in Indonesia, Bali is an extremely well connected airport with international flights available from Amsterdam,Bangkok,Brisbane, Darwin,Dili, Doha,Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Manila, Melbourne,Moscow, Osaka, Perth, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo and others. Domestic flights are available from all major cities of Indonesia. From Bali, a local airline has daily flights to Labuan Bajo by small jet or turboprop planes carrying 50 passengers. Labuan Bajo is the gateway to the Komodo islands. Once in Labuan Bajo, you can proceed to Komodo by speedboat. The port in Labuan Bajo is about a 10-minute drive from the Labuanbajo airport. You can choose to dock straight on the fabled Pink Beach, or if you prefer a trek through the coral cliffs and mangroves, you could dock on a different side of the island, and embark on the 4-hour trek by foot to the beach.

The Pink Beach is awaiting you. Go get your romantic vacation now !

How To Visit The Pink Beach In Komodo Island, Indonesia

The pink beach on Komodo Island in Indonesia has become famous for its light reddish sand color and turquoise water, and the good news is that it’s also pretty easy to visit on a day trip from the town of Labuan Bajo in Flores!

Komodo Beach is actually not the only pink beach Indonesia has to offer — there are several other pink beaches in the Komodo National Park, and also one on the island of Lombok, near Bali — but pink beaches in general are very rare, and there are only a handful of them worldwide!

This travel guide will explain how to visit both of Komodo’s unique beaches — the pink beach on Komodo island, and also the equally famous (and more colorful) pink beach on Padar Island !

Where Is The Pink Sand Beach?

The pink sand beaches are located in the Komodo National Park , a group of islands in east Indonesia.

The closest city is the fishing town of Labuan Bajo in Flores, which has its own airport and plenty of hotels and restaurants to enjoy in between visits to the park.

How To Get There

The only way to visit the pink beach is on a boat trip from Labuan Bajo.

This Komodo beach is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from town as the crow flies, and the journey normally takes 3 hours with a slow boat, or less than half that with a speedboat.

You can knock out all the top sights of Komodo National Park (including the pink beach) in one full day tour, or it’s possible to stay in a liveaboard boat and spend several days sightseeing!

There are a bunch of flights to Labuan Bajo airport (LBJ) every day from Bali, with a 1 hour flight time and several airlines offering ticket prices as low as $40 USD.

Getting to the Komodo islands from Bali is easier than ever now that AirAsia flies between them several times per week. You can also fly to the Labuan Bajo airport from Jakarta, Surabaya, or Ende. You can shop for flights to Labuan Bajo at Skyscanner.

Once you get to Labuan Bajo, it’s possible to book a boat tour to the pink beach at the harbor, or you can book a tour online (more on that later).

What To Expect

1. pink beach on padar island.

If you’re looking for the most colorful pink beach Indonesia has to offer, this is it! The sand color here is actually brighter than the beach on Komodo Island, and we even found a heart-shaped piece of red coral on the sand.

The color of this pink sand beach may be exaggerated a bit in the photos you see all over the internet, but the sand definitely has a noticeable pink tinge to it, especially if you go on a sunny day. The red/pink sand color is brighter in the sun.

This pink beach sits in a hidden bay on the north side of Padar Island , just a short boat drive away from the famous viewpoint .

The beach has a row of warungs (food tents), which we found kind of annoying for photos, but they can be handy if you want to buy snacks, drinks, or souvenirs.

2. Pink Beach On Komodo Island

This second pink beach is located directly on Komodo Island, the home of the famous Komodo dragons , although you’re not likely to see them walking around here since they mostly stay over the hills.

The sand at this Komodo beach isn’t quite as pink or red as the one on Padar Island, but it’s surrounded by tall hills and mountains, and the shoreline itself is more photogenic (sand color aside).

There are also vantage points you can hike up to for even better views, and the warungs on the Komodo beach are shaded by trees so they don’t interfere with the scenery too much.

Which Komodo Pink Beach Is Better?

Out of the two main pink beaches in Komodo National Park, it’s hard to decide which one is better: the one on Padar island, or the one on Komodo island?

The pink beach on Padar definitely has more colorful sand, but the Komodo pink beach has a nicer background for photos, with lots of steep hills and trees.

Overall, if you can only see one of the pink beaches in Indonesia, I think I’d give a slight edge to the pink beach on Padar.

Why Is The Sand Pink?

Pink beaches apparently get their color from foraminifera, which are microscopic red organisms that live in the coral reefs and get washed up on the beach.

A pink sand beach in general is very rare, and there are only a handful of them worldwide. They’re even rarer than black beaches.

The pink color is more noticeable on the pink sand beach at Padar , but both beaches are very nice, so try to knock out both if you have time!

Entrance Fee

FREE as of 2021.

There’s no fee to visit the pink beaches, although if you come there on a day tour you may have to pay the Komodo National Park fees, since the beach is part of the park.

I’ve explained more about the park fees in my complete travel guide for Komodo Island .

Best Pink Beach / Komodo Tour & Day Trip

If you’re looking for a vetted tour company for visiting the famous pink beach in Indonesia, here’s a top rated Komodo National Park day trip with Klook starting at 600k IDR ($42 USD) from Labuan Bajo.

This tour includes the top sights in Komodo like Padar Island , Pink Beach, and the Komodo Dragon safari , and their prices are very competitive based on what we’ve seen being quoted for similar tours in Labuan Bajo. The online reviews are positive too.

We’ve used Klook for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

Is There A Pink Sand Beach In Bali?

No, there isn’t any pink sand beach in Bali, unfortunately.

There are loads of nice white sand beaches and black sand beaches in Bali and the Nusa islands , and there’s also a pink sand beach in Lombok. However, Lombok’s pink beach is not quite as good as the ones in Komodo.

If you really want to see a pink sand beach, then the best solution is to come here to the Komodo islands. Getting to Komodo from Bali is easier than ever now that there are cheap daily flights.

Is There Hotel Accommodation?

No, at the moment there isn’t any hotel or accommodation at the Komodo pink beach.

That may change someday, but for now these islands are completely undeveloped and wild, which I think is a great thing.

Most people visiting the pink sand beaches (and the Komodo National Park) stay in the nearby town of Labuan Bajo, on Flores island.

There are lots of great hotels and accommodation in Labuan Bajo. You can find some of our recommendations below!

Pink Beach Lombok - A Boat Tour in the East

Dieser Artikel ist auch verfügbar auf: Deutsch

When most people think of Pink Beach, they think of a completely pink beach, often confused with the one on Komodo . Many visitors are disappointed because they see the many Instagram photos of the Pink Beach on Komodo and expect exactly the same on Lombok .

Well, I have to disappoint you right from the start, because the Pink Beach on Lombok doesn’t have such an intense color. However, it’s still a beautiful beach with bright turquoise water.

Aussicht vom Hügel auf den Pink Beach, Lombok

Lombok: Tour from Tanjung Luar to the Pink Beaches and Gili Sunut

Now that your expectations of the color of the sand have been lowered a bit, you can still look forward to an exciting tour of eastern Lombok. The east is still one of the most remote areas of Lombok and there is very little tourism in this area.

We have visited Pink Beach several times, but only by land. On our last trip to Lombok in September this year, we went on a boat tour and discovered many more places. Among them are the secret Pink Beaches 2 and 3 that hardly any tourist knows about. In this article, we’ll tell you about this great tour.

How to get to Lombok

Accommodation in lombok – our hotel tips.

Lombok: Tours and tickets

Getting to the pink beach.

Our tour started at the port of Tanjung Luar in the east of Lombok. There you can find lots of offices and boats that offer these tours. Tanjung Luar is known for its controversial fish market where unfortunately sharks are sold. The trip from Senggigi to Tanjung Luar takes over 2 hours and crosses the entire island. So it’s very important to leave on time.

Going to Pink Beach on your own, e.g. by scooter from Kuta , is a popular choice. But be careful: the roads are still very bad and in the dry season even very dusty. This is certainly not for the inexperienced scooter rider. So we think a boat trip might be a good alternative.

Boat at the harbor of Tanjung Luar, East Lombok

Pink Beach 2 and 3

From Tanjung Luar, we passed Gili Maringkik (Maringkik Island) – a small island with a whole village built on it. There are even power poles running through the sea connecting the island to Lombok. Another popular stop in this area is Gili Pasir , a sandbank island. Because of the high tide, we couldn’t stop there.

So we went straight to the first highlight without stopping. Pink Beach 3 is not directly accessible by car or scooter (you have to walk a little bit), which makes it a very isolated beach. When we arrived there, no one was around. It was just perfect!

View of Pink Beach 3 in the east of Lombok

The name “Pink Beach” is a bit misleading. But the beach itself was very impressive. The water is turquoise and the sand is so soft that your feet sink into it. It was absolutely peaceful and secluded.

This boat trip is also great for snorkeling . A popular snorkeling spot is Tanjung Cumi . The “Octopus Cape” is a rock formation that looks like the tentacles of an octopus, hence the name. We didn’t go snorkeling here due to strong currents and cold water temperatures.

Snorkeling at Tanjung Cumi in the east of Lombok

The next Pink Beach was also completely deserted. Theoretically, you can get there by land, but the roads are only sand tracks. There is nothing else around, so a scooter ride is not really safe.

View of the Pink Beach 2 in the east of Lombok

We made it: Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach)

The last stop before the actual Pink Beach was the 2 tiny islands Gili Petelu and Pulau Tiga , which are connected by a sandbank. They are incredibly small and just rocks in the water. It’s a great spot to take photos and also a good place for snorkeling.

Snorkeling in front of Gili Petelu, East Lombok

A few minutes later we were on our way to the place I already knew. The cape of Pink Beach was getting closer and closer and just behind it we were heading straight for the beach. Admittedly, the surroundings of Pink Beach (as well as the whole area in the southeast of Lombok) don’t look quite as beautiful in the dry season as in the “green season” . But the water was just as I remembered it: clear and turquoise.

Rocks at Pink Beach with Gili Petelu and Pulau Tiga in the background

We stayed here for a while and before we went into the water, we climbed onto the rock or cape on the east side of the beach. From up there you have a great view of the surroundings and Tangsi Beach , as it’s actually called.

Tobi on the hill at Pink Beach, East Lombok

At Pink Beach, there are several warungs and small shops. Here you can get something to eat, a coconut or other drinks. Sometimes you can see goats or even monkeys living behind the beach.

By the way: If you visit Pink Beach by car or scooter, you have to pay an entrance fee of 50,000 Rupiah (at least if there is someone there). If you go by boat, you save this money.

After a few hours on the beach, our guide took us to the last stop of the tour. On the way back to Tanjung Luar we stopped at Gili Sunut. This island is only populated by a few fishermen and is otherwise uninhabited. Gili Sunut is also known for its sandbank that connects it to Lombok.

View of the sandbank between Gili Sunut and mainland Lombok

The beach on the north side of the island is absolutely wonderful! There were no tourists around for miles, and except for two fishermen, nobody else was on the beach. The view from the hill to the white shimmering beach was especially beautiful. A real highlight at the end of the tour!

View oft he dream beach at Gili Sunut in East Lombok

Apparently, the sandbank is a popular photo motif, especially for the locals. We found the beach on the other side of the island much more interesting.

A great alternative to the Pink Beach on Lombok. Admittedly, Pink Beach is no longer an insider tip and has become a popular tourist destination on Lombok – especially for day-trippers or visitors from Kuta who come by scooter.

If the original Pink Beach didn’t convince you, the other beaches on the Ekas peninsula or in the Sunut area sure will. Pink Beach 2 and 3 were really nice and we also liked Gili Sunut. If you’re looking for real peace and solitude, then you should take a boat trip from Tanjung Luar.

By the way, plan a full day for this. Just the trip to the east and back takes more than 4 hours. The price for the boat trip is 600,000 rupiah (excluding transportation) and is definitely worth the money. Especially if you’re traveling with several people and can share the cost.

The stunning colour comes from a combination of the white sand and red coral fragments found abundantly in the surrounding waters.

Over time, as these corals break down into tiny pieces due to wave action, they mix with the white sand and create a unique pink hue.

This natural wonder is a rare occurrence and makes Pink Beach an otherworldly paradise.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝐉𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐠𝐨 (@jassesi)

Interestingly, the intensity of Pink Beach’s pink hue can vary throughout the year.

During the dry season, when there is less rainfall, the beach appears even more vibrant, while it may appear slightly paler during the wet season.

Locals believe that the pink sands of Pink Beach have healing properties.

They are said to contain minerals and elements that can soothe the skin, making it a popular spot for natural skincare rituals and treatments among visitors.

Additionally, you can hike to elevated vantage points for even more breathtaking views.

3. How to Get to Pink Beach on Komodo Island from Bali

To begin your journey to the magical Pink Beach, you’ll first need to reach Labuan Bajo.

The town is accessible by air from major cities in Indonesia, and you can also opt for sea transport via ferries from neighbouring islands.

Once in Labuan Bajo, you have multiple options to get to Pink Beach.

The most common and convenient way is by hiring a local boat or joining a guided tour that will take you there.

The journey is an adventure in itself as you’ll sail through crystal-clear waters and witness breathtaking views of surrounding islands.

4. Best Time to Visit Pink Beach, Komodo Island

The STUNNING Komodo Island Pink Beach (Labuan Bajo, Indonesia)

The STUNNING Komodo Island Pink Beach (Labuan Bajo, Indonesia)

One of the top highlights of Indonesia is the famous Komodo Island Pink Beach.

The pink beach offers visitors the chance to relax on the pink sand (yes the sand is actually pink!), swim in the crystal clear water, and hike up to a viewpoint overlooking the beach.

This guide will go over everything there is to know about visiting the Pink Beach of Komodo National Park, and how to prepare for your trip.

1) Pink Beach Overview

Believe it or not, there are actually several pink beaches around the larger Komodo National Park.

Most tours however (whether they are day tours or overnight liveaboards), usually choose from one of two pink beaches.

These include Pantai Merah Pink Beach on Komodo Island and the Pink Beach on Padar Island .

In addition to these two “main” pink beaches, there are several others including Namo Beach, Long Beach, and Serai Beach.

During my trip out in Komodo National Park, we stopped at the more well-known Pantai Merah Pink Beach. This guide will focus on a visit to that particular beach.

Komodo Pink Beach

Why is the Beach Pink in Komodo Island?

While you will find beaches around the world that are white, black, or yellow in color, there are a few out there that actually have pink sand.

Now, you may be wondering why that is the case. Well, there is a good reason for that.

This is due to microscopic organisms called Foraminifera. These Foraminifera create a red pigment on the coral reefs. These red particles then mix in with the normal sand, which in turn creates a pink like color.

If you look closely at the sand, you will be able to see the mixture of the pink particles in there. And while you can clearly see the pink color from the beach itself, it is usually more pronounced if you get that bird’s eye view.

A fair warning to all – some photos you see on the Internet can be highly edited, showing a much more vast & pronounced pink color. While you may be fortunate and get a much stronger pink color during a visit, don’t be surprised if it’s not as pink as you anticipated.

2) Where is Komodo Pink Beach

The Komodo Pink Beach is of course located within the larger Komodo National Park.

The park is an expansive area off of the island of Flores. Within the National Park, there are three main islands – Rinca, Komodo, and Padar, in addition to several smaller islands all throughout.

The Komodo Island Pink Beach is located along the southern coast of the island.

The map below pinpoints the beach’s location in relation to island the rest of the National Park.

3) How Do I Get to Pink Beach of Komodo?

In general, there are two main ways to go about a visit to the Pink Beach of Komodo National Park.

You can head out on a single day tour from Labuan Bajo (the main hub on Flores island), or you can take part of a longer overnight liveaboard experience.

Getting to Labuan Bajo

First things first, you will need to get yourself to Labuan Bajo on Flores island. Whether you are taking part of a day trip or liveaboard, most of these tours leave from Labuan Bajo.

Right outside the main city center, is the Labuan Bajo airport (LBJ). The airport has direct flights to/from many of the main cities of Indonesia.

These include Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali , among several others.

Once you arrive at the airport, it is a quick 10 minute taxi drive into the center.

While flying is going to the easiest and most practical of options in most scenarios, taking a boat to Labuan Bajo is also an option.

The main option here is to take a 4 day / 3 night boat from Lombok (home of Mount Rinjani ) to Flores.

This can be a great option for those that want to enjoy some time out on the water and get to experience the seas of Indonesia along the way.

These sorts of tours will cost around $125 USD give or take.

Note : it is also possible to take a combination of public transport ferries & busses to get between Bali/Lombok & Flores but do expect a long multi leg journey.

Labuan Bajo Flight

Once you have made it into Labuan Bajo, you can then choose from either a day trip into Komodo National Park or join a liveaboard.

Komodo National Park Day Trip

During a Komodo National Park day trip, you will have the chance to see many of the top highlights all within a day.

Tours leave early in the morning and visit places like Padar Island, Rinca Island, snorkeling spots, & of course a Pink Beach.

Each one of these tours may offer slightly different schedules and itineraries, but should be pretty standard at the end of the day.

Feel free to take a look at this One Day Komodo National Park Tour , which is a highly rated tour of the park.

Komodo National Park Liveaboard

Now for those that want to spend more days exploring Komodo National Park, you can also take part of a liveaboard.

Learn More | Komodo National Park Liveaboard Experience

These boats head out for a longer time out on the water – anywhere from 1 night to well over a week. During a trip, you will be sleeping and eating on the boat as you explore some of the best that the park has to offer.

Liveaboards come in all shapes and sizes – some focus more on scuba diving, while others focus more on just the main highlights of the park. Below are some options to consider:

Wunderpus Liveaboard : offers set multi day liveaboard trips that can include scuba diving or snorkeling. It is a great option for those that want to focus both on the underwater aspect and other highlights such as the Pink Beach.

Anjani Trip : offers 3 day / 2 night liveaboards across several different boat offerings. This is perfect for those that want to explore the ins and outs of Komodo National Park with some snorkeling opportunities (no scuba diving is offered).

Komodo National Park Tours

4) Komodo Island Pink Beach Entrance Fee

When visiting Komodo National Park in general, you will need to pay a daily entrance fee in addition to the Flores tourist tax. Below is the fee breakdown:

  • Komodo National Park Fee : 175,000 IDR (divers) / 165,000 IDR (snorkelers) -> this fee must be paid regardless if you enter the water
  • Flores Tourist Tax : 100,000 IDR (divers) / 50,000 IDR (snorkelers) -> this fee must be paid regardless if you enter the water

While some other spots around Komodo may have additional fees, the Pink Beach does not.

Expect to pay around 245,000 IDR ($16 USD) for the Komodo National Park fees. If also visiting other spots in the National Park, you will need to consider those fees as well.

As you are signing up for tours, just be certain to ask whether entrance fees are included in the overall cost.

Note : if visiting on weekends/holidays, the Komodo National Park fee will be about 40% more expensive

5) Can You Swim at the Pink Beach Komodo Island?

Yes, of course you can swim at the Komodo Island Pink Beach.

While you may be more intrigued to enjoy the pink sand, don’t forget to hop in the water too. As you can see in the photos, the water is crystal clear and offers some beautiful swimming opportunities.

If you head a bit further out in the water, you will also find a coral reef, which is perfect for those that want to snorkel too.

6) How Long to Spend at the Pink Beach

In general, it seems like tours stop for around 1 hour at the Pink Beach. This gives people enough time to enjoy the sand and hop in the water.

Of course, though, each tour’s schedule may be a bit different. If you are on a longer liveaboard, then you may spend an afternoon at the beach. If you are on a day tour, you may be rushed through in less than an hour.

During my 3 day liveaboard, we started out that morning on Rinca Island checking out some Komodo Dragons.

We then headed on the quick boat ride to the Komodo Island Pink Beach, where we enjoyed just over an hour around the sand before heading off to the next destination.

Pink Beach Komodo

7) A Visit to the Komodo Island Pink Beach

As your boat approaches the Pink Beach, it will head to a small inlet on the other side of the beach itself.

In this small harbor there is a dock that allows people to easily disembark from the boat.

This is great for a couple of reasons. For one, you won’t need to disembark right into the water. Secondly, you won’t find boats around the water of the Pink Sand beach itself.

Komodo Island Boat

Once off the boat and on the island, it is just a minute’s walk until you reach the beautiful pink sand. The beach is around 700 feet in length, so you should have no trouble finding a spot.

If you are looking for some shade, no worries. There are actually some trees along the shores of the beach for those that don’t want to be fully in the sun.

Labuan Bajo Pink Beach

You can then spend the rest of your time, laying out on the sand, taking some photos, and going for a swim.

Pink Beach Indonesia

8) Pink Beach Hike

While hanging by the beach is going to be a highlight, the view from above is a special experience too.

Towards the farther end of the beach is a pathway that zigzags up the hillside. It is a short hike – around 500 feet in length with some elevation gain.

From the top, you will get some stunning views of the Pink Beach, the water, and more landscape of Komodo Island.

If that is something you are interested in, then just be aware of your timing so you can still give yourself enough time to complete the hike.

Komodo Island Landscape

9) Padar Island Pink Beach

While I did not go to the Padar Island Pink Beach, that is another popular pink beach in Komodo National Park to visit.

Padar Island is on most tours, as it does offer one of (if not the best) viewpoint in all of the park. You most likely will still visit Padar Island for the viewpoint hike, but you may just not visit the pink beach.

This pink beach is usually quieter than the Komodo Island beach, and offers just as beautiful sand & water to experience.

Pink Beach Padar Island

10) Where to Stay in Labuan Bajo

Before & after your time visiting Komodo National Park, you will need a place to stay in Labuan Bajo.

Generally speaking, the main city center is not that large and there are many options to choose from all around.

You can also opt for some more relaxing options further outside of the town center that offer more of a beach experience.

Below are a few of my recommended options when it comes to Labuan Bajo hotels:

  • Seaesta Komodo Hostel & Hotel
  • Harbour Komodo Hotel
  • AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach
  • Puri Sari Beach Hotel

The first two hotels are located within the town center, while the second two are further away along the beachside.

Labuan Bajo Town

That wraps up a guide to the Komodo Island Pink Beach. If you have any questions or comments, be sure to add them in below.

Feel free to also check out the other Indonesia itineraries and guides up on the site.

Have fun out there and safe travels!
