As someone who was raised on Amtrak and has taken dozens of their cross-country trips over the past 20+ years, I’m a big advocate of train travel. Aside from amazing scenery, you get to detox from your usual hustle-and-bustle life; in fact, you have no choice: the WiFi is often spotty at best. Once you decide to take a train trip, you definitely have some R&R to look forward to. Which means your biggest issue will be answering one question – which route should you take?

It all comes down to what types of landscapes you want to see. The vast rolling low country of the Gulf? The California coast? The Rockies further north? The rivers and lakes of Middle America? The dramatic greenery of the Pacific Northwest? The options are endless – and you can always do a partial journey instead of a full one or train-hop from one route to another.

It’s also recommended to take trips a few times a year during different seasons – the Colorado River looks a lot different with glistening snow around it versus colorful spring flowers or fall foliage. But, no matter what time of year you take an Amtrak trip, as you take in the scenery from your seat or the observation car – complete with floor-to-ceiling windows ideal for sightseeing – you’ll quickly see how the journey truly is the destination.

California Zepher

Start – Chicago; End – Emeryville (San Francisco) For a true cross-country train ride experience that goes right through the middle of America – from Chicago to San Francisco (via a bus from Emeryville) – the California Zephyr is the one. Start – Chicago; End – Los Angeles Now’s your time to see the American West up-close-and-personal as you ride through it on the Southwest Chief. Unlike the fairly horizontal route of the California Zephyr, the Southwest Chief does more of a diagonal as it passes plains, rivers, mountains and deserts. Be sure to keep an eye on the scenery as it changes from Midwestern prairies to snow-capped Colorado mountains to sun-baked pueblos to the Sedona Red Cliffs , taking routes and switchbacks only fit for a train.

Texas Eagle

Start – Chicago; End – Los Angeles If you cannot get enough of the train and want to take a longer route from Chicago to Los Angeles , the Texas Eagle fits the bill. Although 65 hours may sound long, with all the scenery competing for your attention, time will fly by and next thing you know, you'll arrive at your final destination. Along the way, you will see all types of topography, from the raging waters of the Mississippi River to the mountainous Ozarks. And in addition to seeing sprawling southern landscapes, you can also see how many historical towns and tiny train depots you can spot – a hint at how the west was won by rail. If you want to cut your journey in half, you can always get off at a Texan stop that catches your eye and spend more time there. Chicago to San Antonio , for example, is about a 32-hour journey.

Coast Starlight

Start – Seattle; End – Los Angeles If you want to follow the length of the US west coast (well, minus San Diego),  the Coast Starlight will provide you with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean for almost 350 miles of California coastline as you head south to Los Angeles – or north to Seattle. In addition to watching waves of crystal-blue water, you can take in the rich, dripping forests and snowy peaks of the Pacific Northwest. Just past the California border, the train curves around the base of Mount Shasta, giving you panoramic views of one of the southernmost of the Cascades Range's stratovolcanoes.

From there, the landscape begins to change remarkably as you leave verdant, foggy NorCal behind for the golden hues of the state's farmland, wine country , and eventually SoCal's dusky, scrubb-strewn hills. The southern terminus is Los Angeles' handsome Arts and Crafts train station, all dark wood and generous leather club chairs, from which you can easily catch a bus elsewhere – including LAX – or pick up another train route.

If you were traveling north from LA to Seattle, however, you have a choice to make. Once the train reaches Eugene, Oregon, some north bound train-goers opt for the Amtrak Cascades route to continue even further north than Seattle and on to Vancouver, British Columbia (see more below).

Amtrak Cascades

Start – Eugene; End – Vancouver, BC Whether you take the Amtrak Cascades train route as an extension of your trip up the West Coast from LA on the Coast Starlight or just take the former on its own, one thing’s for sure: nothing encompasses the Pacific Northwest more than this voyage. On this 10-hour, 25-minute journey from Eugene to Vancouver, British Columbia, the picturesque views you’ll get on this include everything from waterfalls to the high peaks of Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood. And don’t forget about the Columbia River Gorge and Puget Sound, too. 

If you want even more train travel when you get to Vancouver, you can hop off Amtrak and step aboard the  Rocky Mountaineer , which has three different rail options through the Canadian Rockies .

Empire Builder

Start – Chicago; End – Portland/Seattle For an ideal trip through the northern part of the United States – particularly if you’re a Lewis and Clark fan and want to retrace some of their steps – Empire Builder is your train. Starting from Chicago, you’ll then go north through Wisconsin and Minnesota before making your way across several states until reaching Portland or Seattle.

From the vast, yet striking, prairies of North Dakota to charming mountain towns, there’s always something to see. Plus, don’t forget about renowned sights like the mighty Mississippi, Montana ’s Big Sky country and Glacier National Park – there’s even a train stop in East Glacier . In Spokane , the train heads either to Portland or Seattle. Hint: if you take the Portland route, you’ll see the stunning Columbia River Gorge, which you won’t soon – if ever – forget.

Sunset Limited

Start – New Orleans; End – Los Angeles The Sunset Limited travels from New Orleans to Los Angeles and is Amtrak’s southernmost route. If looking out at breathtaking bayous, deserts and mountainous landscapes is your thing, you’ll love this ride. Other highlights include crossing the Rio Grande and seeing more cacti than you can count. Of course, it’s not called the Sunset Limited for nothing – you can catch epic shades of yellow, orange, and pink blending together into unforgettable sunsets with stunning backdrops.

Pacific Surfliner

Start – San Luis Obispo; End – San Diego The Pacific Surfliner goes from San Luis Obispo – complete with plenty of small-town charm and views of wine country – to San Diego , or vice-versa. Since it’s a coastal train route, you’ll see plenty of surf, as well as surfers – the train even has racks for both bikes and surfboards. At just under six hours, this is also the perfect route to take if you’re new to long-distance train travel and want to start small before committing to a full-on cross-country journey just yet. Plus, it makes for an easy weekend away if you live in or near one of the many cities it goes through, like Los Angeles, Solvang or Santa Barbara.

Lake Shore Limited

Start – New York/Boston; End – Chicago You don't have to head to the coasts to have beautiful journey along silver shorelines – not when the Lake Shore Limited has got you covered. Hugging the lip of the Great Lakes  and other famous bodies of water, including the Mohawk River, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and the Finger Lakes region of New York, the aquatic scenery makes for a pretty and peaceful journey. And when you throw a colorful sunset into the mix, it makes the landscape that much more captivating as you roll from the first to second cities through what was once the frontier.

Start – New York, NY; End – Montreal, QC What better a way to go visit Montreal than hopping on the train in New York and heading up north to Canada. This 10-hour journey offers a perfect escape from big-city life while passing through tranquil areas like the Hudson Valley, Saratoga Springs and Adirondack Mountains . It’s a lovely trip to take any time of year, but especially during the fall foliage. You’ll also ride by some beautiful bodies of water, including Lake Champlain and Lake George. And if you take the route from Montreal to New York instead of vice-versa, there will be plenty of train connection options once you arrive, from Philadelphia to Washington, DC, and beyond.

Capitol Limited

Start – Washington, D.C.; End – Chicago Whether you start your journey in the Midwest or from the East Coast, this 18-hour train ride will take you through some key scenic places, including the Potomac Valley, Harpers Ferry and the Allegheny Mountains . You might capture a stunning sunset along the way, too. No matter which city you start in, you can continue your trip in one of the vibrant cities the train ends in. The Most Scenic Train Rides Across the US

This past June, I took a nine-hour train ride from Santa Barbara to San Francisco on board the Amtrak Coast Starlight, considered one of the country’s most scenic rail routes. The views proved so absorbing that I never actually made it to my assigned seat—sitting instead in the communal observation car for the entirety of the ride.

From the car’s glass-dome windows, California’s rugged coastline and golden hills revealed themselves to me. America’s West Coast fluctuated between the breathtaking and the dire—from endless ocean and cliff-top mansions to drought-ridden fields and cottages sinking between collapsed roofs. Peering out at the vast spectrum of life unfold before me, I enjoyed that slightly detached “from above” perspective rail travel affords you; through the journey, I observed both heartwarming humanity (lone fishermen and packs of surfers, a young girl wearing a pink tutu playing in a creek, an old man collecting driftwood at a campsite) as well as breathtaking nature (a flock of pelicans, meadows of yellow wildflowers, rolling sets of whitecap waves).

As the sun set on the second half of my journey, fellow passengers in the observation car formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and travelers trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs from cultures around the world.

While it would've been more efficient to fly between the two Californian cities, the meditative romance of slow-paced train travel lends truth to the cliché that the journey is just as important as the destination. And in a country as diverse as this one, there’s truly no better way to witness its beauty—and complexity—than by train.

With over a dozen long distance Amtrak routes and even more private rail operators in states like Alaska and Hawaii, the challenge then becomes picking which train trips to take. Here, we’ve selected 13 of the most scenic train rides in the US that are worth booking for the views alone.

Amtrak Adirondack

While the Northeast is more known for its commuter trains than sightseeing, Amtrak’s Adirondack route is a lovely exception. Relaunched in spring 2023 following its closure during the pandemic, the route runs from New York City to Montreal . Departing from the new Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, the 10-hour train travels along the Hudson River up until Albany, then passes through Saratoga Springs and the dazzling Lake Champlain before arriving in Canada. Take this route in the fall during peak foliage season to watch New England’s changing autumnal colors glide by your window.

Amtrak Empire Builder

Traveling along major portions of the Lewis and Clark trail, the Empire Builder is a true American West train adventure. The 46-hour train departs daily from Chicago and traverses through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana, before concluding in either Seattle or Portland . From views of the Mississippi River and North Dakota plains to the stunning scenery of Glacier National Park in Montana, this less-frequented route promises a rich variety of views without the crowds. Built in 1901 to transport lumber through the mountains of West Virginia, the Cass Scenic Railroad helps to preserve the look and feel of America’s locomotive legacy. Originally built by a local millionaire, California Gold Rush baron Samuel Brannan in 1865 to transport Napa visitors to a spa resort in Calistoga, the Napa Valley Wine Train today gives travelers a chance to sip local vintages from a luxurious railcar while passing vaunted vineyards on a three-hour round-trip journey.

Amtrak Southwest Chief

From the rolling farmlands of Illinois, across the Mississippi River, to the red mesas of New Mexico, and into the Mojave Desert, the Southwest Chief traverses more than 2,000 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles . Travelers wary of a full 40-hour venture can take just a partial piece of the route, but don’t miss the most scenic stretch, which spans Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California, including the Ratón Pass—a National Historic Landmark along the Santa Fe Trail.

Only available from May through October, the Cape Cod Excursion train provides passengers with a whirlwind sightseeing tour of the Cape’s natural attractions, including the charming Cape Cod Canal. A train ride is a fun adventure any time of year, but trips in the fall offer colorful scenery as the leaves turn different shades of red, orange and yellow. Plus, Amtrak trains are usually less crowded if you plan your vacation after Labor Day. It’s a great time to get out and explore. To start planning your trip, here are nine great Amtrak routes to ride in the fall.

1. Empire Service

The Hudson River Valley is one of the best places to view fall foliage in the United States. A mid-October day trip on the Empire Service is easily doable as there are multiple trains to choose from each day. One option is to travel between New York City and Albany , which is 2.5 hours one way. You can also travel between New York City and charming Hudson, NY (just over 2 hours one way). For river views, find a seat on the left side of the train if you are traveling north from New York City or nearby station, or sit on the right side if you are heading south toward Manhattan.

2. Maple Leaf

Maple Leaf trains travel through the Hudson River Valley and also stop at Niagara Falls ( US and Canada sides) and Toronto , making this train a great option for sightseeing. If you want to spend time in Canada, pack your passport and plan a trip for late September or early October to enjoy the foliage (here are the best places to view the leaves in Toronto ). Otherwise, you can stay a night or more at Niagara Falls to experience the stunning waterfalls (view top Niagara Falls tours ).

3. Adirondack

Like Empire Service and Maple Leaf, the Adirondack travels along the Hudson River, but you’ll also have wonderful views of Lake Champlain on this route. It’s one of the most scenic Amtrak trips on the East Coast with the option to visit Montreal . This train also provides access to the Adirondack Mountains, and beautiful Lake George is a short drive away from the Fort Edward Amtrak Station via Enterprise rental car .

4. Vermonter

Vermont is a stunning place to see the fall foliage during the last two weeks in September and early October, and you can do so on the Vermonter Amtrak route. Trains travel between Washington D.C. and Vermont, with additional stops in Maryland, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York City, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Southbound trains that depart from Vermont will offer the best views since travel is during daylight hours.

We recommend a long-weekend trip so you can hike, bike and enjoy other activities in Vermont before returning home. Brattleboro , which is on the Connecticut River, is a great option as the Amtrak station has Airbnbs, a hotel , hiking trails, restaurants and other things to do in walking distance, plus rental cars are an option with Enterprise (pickup service available).

5. Empire Builder

On the West Coast, the Columbia River Gorge has amazing scenery all year long, but fall leaves are a bonus starting late September into mid-October. The Empire Builder train that arrives and departs from Portland, Oregon is the train to book. It’s a long-distance route that goes all the way to Chicago, but you can shorten the journey to 13.5 hours by starting or ending the trip in Whitefish, Montana.

Major airlines fly into the airport near Whitefish , there’s plenty of lodging near the Amtrak station, and you can see the Rocky Mountains and visit Glacier National Park as a bonus. Plan your trip in late September or early October to view peak foliage. Also, due to earlier sunset times in the fall, it is better to travel westbound on the Empire Builder to see the most foliage in the Columbia River Gorge.

Note that there is also beautiful fall foliage in Wisconsin and Minnesota that you can view from the train. Consider traveling between Minneapolis and Chicago or Minneapolis and Milwaukee for the scenery and easy access to airports.

6. California Zephyr

For a less traditional fall foliage train trip, travel through the Colorado Rocky Mountains on the California Zephyr . The colors here are primary bright yellow and gold. At the higher elevations on this route, leaves start changing color in early September, with peak viewing at the middle and end of the month.

When planning your trip, keep in mind that the California Zephyr is the second-longest Amtrak route with service between Chicago and Northern California. However, you can do a day trip through the mountains (15 hours) by starting the trip in Denver (requires arriving the day before the train departs unless you live in the area) and traveling to Salt Lake City. In Salt Lake, you’ll need to stay overnight, but then you can fly back home or return to Denver on Amtrak.

The other option is to depart from Denver and stay one night or more near the Fraser/Winter Park or Glenwood Springs Amtrak stations, then travel back to Denver. Check out Colorado train trip ideas to learn more.

7. Cardinal

The Cardinal Amtrak route is one of the most scenic train rides east of the Mississippi River with travel through the New River Gorge, Appalachian Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley. There are many places to board the train as it travels between Chicago and New York City, but eastbound travel will give you the most daylight for viewing the scenery, so we recommend starting this trip in the Midwest.

Because there are limited Amtrak stations on this route that are near major airports, you’ll need to plan for a long-distance journey and a night on the train, especially to see all the scenery in the mountains and the valley. If you want to visit the New River Gorge National Park during your trip, book your ticket to Charleston, West Virginia and rent a car there.

Washington D.C. and especially Alexandria, Virginia are great places to start or end your trip on the East Coast as Reagan National Airport is nearby. Chicago and Indianapolis are the major cities at the opposite end of the route that are near airports, with Chicago having the better Amtrak arrival and departure times.

Note that the Cardinal only operates three days each week, so check train schedules before deciding on your vacation dates. The best time for this trip is late September through mid-October.

8. Missouri River Runner

For beautiful fall foliage in the Midwest, book a trip on the Missouri River Runner in early to mid-October. Trains travel along the Missouri River between St. Louis and Kansas City and stop at charming cities that are perfect for a weekend trip. Consider staying a night or more in Hermann (pictured above), which was founded by Germans and has rolling hills and wineries. Jefferson City and Independence are other stops to check out if you enjoy historic sites.

9. Lake Shore Limited

The Lake Shore Limited is a long-distance route that travels through the beautiful Hudson River Valley and part of Massachusetts, both great places to view foliage in early October. You can board the train in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Upstate New York. Boston and New York City are both stops on the route and are recommended places to visit in the fall.

You will love the open-air rail cars that allow you to view the fantastic scenes of the antique capital of Georgia. You will also enjoy enough layover time to eat lunch and explore the surroundings.

Washington, Delaware, and Beyond

If you are looking for long train trips, you can take the Acela splurge train and enjoy the spectacular views of Chesapeake Bay.

It is a 75-minute train ride to Wilmington, Delaware. But you may also book a direct Washington, DC to New York train for a stress-free journey where you do not have to alight along the way. It is a three-and-a-half-hour ride but worth every second because of the fantastic features and views.

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. and Museum are located in Portland, United States. Dedicated to the preservation of Maine ’s two – feet gauge railway, the Railroad Company and Museum offers a wonderful and leisurely ride along the Eastern Promenade of Casco Bay.

The train journey on this route takes 35 minutes and is 3 miles long round trip. Experiencing this journey, visitors can take part in exploring the museum, which holds exhibits related to trains and their history. Tourists and visitors can also take in the sights of several historic railcars, do some gift shopping at souvenir shops.

A-Train Trip through Williamsburg, Virginia

Also worth visiting is Williamsburg, Virginia’s amazingly modern and historic city. Make a point of spending at least one night in the town and enjoy the one-hour train ride beyond Richmond.

This is an opportunity for history lovers to feel life as it was in the 1700s. Head to Colonial Williamsburg. It is a history museum that provides all sorts of entertainment, lodgings, history, and period dining in one place. This makes it a perfect place if you are holidaying on a budget.

It makes an excellent vacation when you combine the tour with food, a craft brewery, and contemporary art in the city. Do not forget to head to Yorktown, Jamestown, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park.

Canada Coast to Coast by Train

The Coast to Coast is the ultimate Canadian trip by rail and includes East Coast train rides. You’ll see the country’s top highlights, including Peggy’s Cove, Niagara Falls and Lake Louise. This trip includes a trip on VIA Rail, in a sleeper cabin, and on the Rocky Mountaineer.

A ride across passages of history - Moscow Metro rolls on

Lying at a depth of 5 (Pechatniki station) to 80 metres (Park Pobedy station), the history of the last eight decades unfold before your eyes, carved out of marble and granite and built in iron and glass – revealing the tastes, ideas, dreams, hopes and disappointments of the previous generations and contemporaries. The Moscow Metro dates back to 1931, when its construction first began, although engineers Pyotr Balinsky and Evgeny Knorre submitted their first designs to the Moscow City Duma as far back as 1902. “His speeches carried a strong temptation: like a true demon, he would promise to cast Moscow down to the bottom of the sea and raise it above the clouds”, a journalist for the Russkoye Slovo newspaper commented on Balinsky’s idea. Yet the Duma, made up of rich people, did not bite the bait: after all, they all lived in the centre of the city and never rode overcrowded trams.

After five failed proposals before the Duma, the Moscow Metro finally threw open its doors on May 15, 1935, 18 years after the revolution, and carried the first passengers on its moving staircases, escalators, and the padded seats of its new wagons (unlike the wooden seats in trams). The first metro line – from Sokolniki to Dvorets Sovetov (now known as Kropotkinskaya) -- was 11 km long and had 13 stations. Now, the Moscow Metro has a track of over 300 km with 12 lines and 182 stations. The city’s development outline for 2020 envisages that, by then, another 120 km will have been added to the existing routes.

For the first 20 years of its history, the Moscow Metro was named after Lazar Kaganovich, the “iron commissar” and Stalin’s right hand man, who was in-charge of construction of the first stage of the metro (incidentally, he personally blew up the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in December 1931 as a part of the Proletarian Capital project). In 1955, however, the Metro was renamed after Vladimir Lenin. Although Russia has long since changed its political track, you can still find the images of the former leader at over 10 stations, including, for instance, busts of Lenin at Belorusskaya and Komsomolskaya stations, impressive mosaics at Baumanskaya and Kievskaya stations, a tile panel in the passage between the Borovitskaya and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina stations. By a bitter irony of fate, Lenin’s full-face and side-face images decorate the Tsaritsyno (translated as the Tsarina’s Estate) station (dubbed Lenino up until 1990) – images of the very person who ordered the shooting of the royal family. You will not, however, find any images of Stalin in Moscow’s underground. A symbol of Russia's victory, he was omnipresent in the late 1940s. After his death in 1953 and the denunciation of Stalin’s personality cult, his images were gradually withdrawn from the Moscow Metro.

“Architecture developed along the same lines, both above and below the surface. Anything that emerged above ground had a reflection underground. It is equally true that vice versa never occurred: good architecture underground but bad architecture above the ground,” says Nikolay Shumakov, chief architect of the Moscow Metro. The first metro stations, up until the mid-1950s, were conceived and built as luxurious “palaces for the people”, great architecture for a great state. Art historians insist that the richly-decorated underground was a deliberate ideological move to eulogise the young Soviet country. Stations built between 1937 and 1955 are characteristic of the first architectural period. Everything completed at this time is worthy of special attention. For instance, look at the ceiling at Mayakovskaya and Novokuznetskaya stations to see mosaic panels based on designs by artist Alexander Deineka – 24-Hour Soviet Sky and Heroic Labour of the Soviet People on the Home Front. The mosaics were assembled by famous mosaic artist Vladimir Frolov, author of the mosaic icons in St. Petersburg’s Church of the Saviour on Blood. The Ploshchad Revolutsii station was decorated with 76 bronze sculptures of workers, soldiers, farmers, students and other Soviet people. You can even find a frontier guard with a dog and rub its nose for good luck. You may also note that all the figures (except pioneers) are either sitting or bent, which engendered the sad joke – “Any Soviet man is either in jail or on his knees.”

1955 heralded the end of the good times for Russian architecture – both underground and above ground – after the Communist Party issued a decree "On elimination of extravagance in design and construction.” Dull stations, without any stucco work, mosaics, original columns or other “unjustified” elements, were built under the slogan “Kilometres at the expense of architecture”. Things were the same above the ground, where entire cities were built of commonplace five-storey apartment blocks, all looking the same, nicknamed ‘Khrushchevkas’ after the then leader, Nikita Khrushchev. To get a sense of this period’s architecture, see the few stations built in the 1960s-1980s like Tverskaya, Kitay-Gorod and Kolomenskaya. In 2002, with the reconstruction of the Vorobyovy Gory station, the development of the Moscow Metro entered a third stage, which could be defined as ‘renaissance’. The platform of the station offers a splendid view of the Moskva River, the Luzhniki Olympic Complex and the Academy of Sciences building. Architectural canons of the 1930s-1940s were once again in use in the design of underground stations. By the same token, artists once again become involved in decorating the stations. As such, the Sretensky Bulvar station boasts silhouettes of Pushkin, Gogol, and Timiryazev and Moscow sights; the Dostoevskaya station is decorated with black-and-white panels featuring the main characters from Dostoyevsky’s novels The Idiot, Demons, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and the Maryina Roshcha station flaunts its pastoral mosaic landscapes. In 2004, Russia's first monorail transport system was launched into service – an elevated track (running 6 to 12 metres above the ground) in the northern part of Moscow, linking the All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Timiryazevskaya metro station. The evolution of the Moscow Metro goes on. It’s still a work in progress, with ambitious plans to move the Moscow Metro even closer to passengers over the next ten years, not just by adding an extra 120 km to its total track. “We want to strip the stations of everything we can,” says Nikolai Shumakov. “We are trying to show the passengers their very framework, what the metro is made of. Cast iron and concrete are beautiful.”

With any luck, you can ride in a retro train, a moving art gallery or a library. The trains are actually a part of the general traffic (i.e., they do not run to any special schedule) and are used on certain lines. The Reading Moscow Train , an ordinary train on the face of it, features extracts from literary works for adults and children. Each wagon has its own selection, from children’s fairy tales to Gogol. Circle Line. The Poetry in Metro Train carries an exposition, updated this year, dedicated to Italian poets Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch, Giacomo Leopardi, etc. All the poems are featured in two languages, Russian and Italian. Filevskaya Line. The Sokolniki Retro Train looks exactly like the first Moscow Metro train, both inside and out. Painted brown, it has padded seats, typical wall decorations and retro lamps. Sokolnicheskaya Line. The Aquarelle Train looks like a cabinet painted with flowers and fruit on the outside. Inside, it is an art gallery featuring art reproductions from the Vyatka Apollinary and Viktor Vasnetsov Art Museum. Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line.

Revolution Square station (built in 1938) is close to the Red Square area. There are 72 sculptures in the station, depicting the people of the Soviet Union, including soldiers, farmers, athletes, writers, industrial workers and school children.

Moscow Metro 2019

Will it be easy to find my way in the Moscow Metro? It is a question many visitors ask themselves before hitting the streets of the Russian capital. As metro is the main means of transport in Moscow – fast, reliable and safe – having some skills in using it will help make your visit more successful and smooth. On top of this, it is the most beautiful metro in the world !

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

RATES AND TICKETS

Paper ticket A fee is fixed and does not depend on how far you go. There are tickets for a number of trips: 1, 2 or 60 trips; or for a number of days: 1, 3 days or a month. Your trips are recorded on a paper ticket. Ifyou buy a ticket for several trips you can share it with your traveling partner passing it from one to the other at the turnstile.

On every station there is cashier and machines (you can switch it to English). Cards and cash are accepted. 1 trip - 55 RUB 2 trips - 110 RUB

Tickets for 60 trips and day passes are available only at the cashier's.

60 rides - 1900 RUB

1 day - 230 RUB 3 days - 438 RUB 30 days - 2170 RUB.

The cheapest way to travel is buying Troyka card . It is a plastic card you can top up for any amount at the machine or at the ticket office. With it every trip costs 38 RUB in the metro and 21 RUB in a bus. You can get the card in any ticket office. Be prepared to leave a deposit of 50 RUB. You can get it back returning the card to the cashier.

One turnstile at every station accept PayPass and payments with phones. It has a sticker with the logos and located next to the security's cabin.

GETTING ORIENTED

At the platfrom you will see one of these signs.

It indicates the line you are at now (line 6), shows the direction train run and the final stations. Numbers below there are of those lines you can change from this line.

In trains, stations are announced in Russian and English. In newer trains there are also visual indication of there you are on the line.

To change lines look for these signs. This one shows the way to line 2.

There are also signs on the platfrom. They will help you to havigate yourself. (To the lines 3 and 5 in this case).
