How do I use the SD511 System?

When i call 511, the automated attendant asks me to a choose a segment, “what is a segment”, can ttyd users access the 511 system, what if the system is busy when i call, why do i not reach the sd511 system when i dial 511.

  • Your telephone company currently does not provide access to 511. The SDDOT has diligently worked to provide 511 on all local land line and wireless phone services. We will continue to negotiate with the State's landline carriers in order to provide 511 access to everyone who uses a landline telephone.
  • Certain office telephone systems cannot access this new three-digit code. If your office has its own Public Exchange (PBX) you may be required to dial a specific number for an outside line prior to dialing 511 or your carrier or pay phone provider does not offer 511, you may dial 1-866-MY-SD511 (866-697-3511).

I called 511 from my mobile phone but I got a neighboring state's system. What happened?

How do i give my feedback on the sd511 service, when will 511 service be available nationwide, ivr phone system, mobile apps, do you record the traffic cameras can you send me a copy of the video that shows my accident, sometimes camera snapshots are several hours old. what's going on, sd511 smartphone applications, how do i sign up for text alerts and email alerts, how do i stop my sd511 alerts, can i save a route and have 511 tell me what delays (planned road work and incidents) will be on my route, driving alerts.

Needs improvement

Overall not too bad but surrounding states have much better apps that are easier to use. This app has no easy way to see a legend at the same time you are looking at the road conditions. So if you don’t happen to know that a pink road with black dotted line means “whatever” you are out of luck. You need to go through several menus to get to actual road info in text format. This app could easily be improved dramatically with just a few tweaks. Our neighbors in Minnesota give a good example of an easy to use 511 app.

SDDOT 511 needs improvements

I have seen WYDOT 511 and they are much easier to use/access.. when I click on road conditions and it takes me to routes.. the list is blank but there are stars and each one of those represent one route (I.e. I-90 from Rapid City to State Line).. you cannot see the name of routes unless you click on the star so it is annoying I have to click on each star til I find the route I want/need to know conditions for. Same for Legend.. it shows the colors but does not show what it means even if I click on it. This needs a lot of improvements. On the Map.. showed 3 different colors (assuming it’s the snowstorm and the severity that’s coming tonight through Sunday) is not labeled or say what the colors mean. I am not impressed.

Notifications.

I like the fact that you don’t have to dial the number to check road conditions. The voiceover reads every details just as you hear on the phone. However I would recommend if you could have notifications on changes like if no travel alerts. Send notifications on the road conditions when winter weather hits the area or when road constructions are going on in any area near our locations. I would like to get the information without opening the app.

511, SafeTravelUSA Add Commercial Vehicle Information and National Weather Service Warnings

Article Body

For Immediate Release:  Friday, March 8, 2013

Contact:   Kristi Sandal, Public Information Officer, 605-773-3265

PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation has added commercial vehicle information to its phone-based 511 Traveler Information Service and SafeTravelUSA.com/sd website.

This week, SafeTravelUSA began displaying commercial vehicle information, including seasonal load restrictions posted on state highways during the spring thaw.

The web site’s map shows where 6-, 7-, or 8-ton per axle weight limits that are currently in effect or may be needed later in the spring. Other temporary restrictions on commercial vehicle weight and size related to construction, incidents, or other conditions are also shown.

The SafeTravelUSA map can be “zoomed” to show every Interstate, U.S., and state highway in the state. SDDOT’s 511 Traveler Information Service provides the same information verbally.

The 511 service also informs travelers of National Weather Service Warnings for flash floods, severe thunderstorms, tornados, blizzards, ice storms, and winter storms affecting all Interstate, U.S. and state highways in South Dakota. The NWS Warnings are planned to become available on SafeTravelUSA sometime in April.

The Department of Transportation provides 511 and SafeTraveUSA.com/sd as free services to improve safety and convenience for highway travelers. Both services provide information on road conditions, highway construction, events and incidents that affect traffic, as well as weather affecting travel.

Travelers can access South Dakota’s phone-based system by simply dialing 511 anywhere in South Dakota, or 866-697-3511 toll-free outside the state.

Spring Load Limit information can be also be found on the SDDOT website at: http://www.sddot.com/travelers/loadlimits/Default.aspx or you can sign up for the mailing list at: http://www.sddot.com/travelers/mailinglists/Default.aspx
