India to host South Africa for multi-format women's tour in June-July

India is set to host South Africa for a multi-format women's tour in June-July. ESPNcricinfo has learnt Bengaluru will host the white-ball leg, beginning with three ODIs from June 16, while Chennai will host the one-off Test starting June 28.

The three T20Is will be played after the Test, with a view to ensure continuity in formats ahead of the T20 World Cup that is set to be held in Bangladesh in September-October. The ODIs will be played on June 16, 19 and 23, the T20Is on July 5, 7 and 9.

The six white-ball games were part of the ICC's women's FTP. Both series, along with a visit from New Zealand, were supposed to be played between July and September last year but had to be postponed due to the men's ODI World Cup and logistics.

The one-off Test wasn't part of the FTP. It was a late addition, as part of CSA and the BCCI's recent push to promote women's Tests.

This will be the third Test India will play in seven months, having played against England and Australia in December. Those two Tests came on the back of a significant development aimed at taking the "first step towards tackling discrimination" with the BCCI announcing equal match fees for centrally contracted male and female cricketers.

Meanwhile, South Africa, who broke their eight-year hiatus from the format when they played in England in June 2022 , last played a four-day game in February in Perth , where they lost to Australia by an innings and 284 runs.

The tour is also a significant step in the BCCI's aim to take women's cricket to newer centres. For the past few years, the BCCI has preferred to host teams across multiple venues in Mumbai citing logistical reasons. They broke away from that norm with the WPL earlier this year, with games held in Bengaluru and Delhi.

The three ODIs are part of the ICC Women's Championship, which will give direct qualifications to the top four teams, apart from the hosts, for the 2025 ODI World Cup, which will be held in India. South Africa are currently second on that table .

As per a PTI report, the white-ball series will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and the solitary red-ball game will be organised in Chennai.

The tour will kick off with the three ODIs in Bengaluru. While the first One-Dayer will be played on June 16, the second and the third ODI is scheduled for June 19 and 23. The ODI series will be a part of the ongoing ICC Women's Championship 2022-25 cycle.

The teams that will finish in the top four places at the end of the cycle will earn automatic qualification for the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 alongside the hosts, India. South Africa are placed second on the table with 11 wins and eight losses in 18 games. They are behind Australia who have just lost three out of 18 matches and won 15.

The ODI leg will pave the way for the one-off Test which is slated to be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from June 8.

South Africa women were also involved in a red-ball game when they toured Australia earlier this year. However, the Proteas didn't have a game to remember as they lost the contest by a staggering margin of an innings and 84 runs.

Both teams will then return to Bengaluru for the T20I leg of the bilateral series. The three T20Is will be organised on July 5, 7 and 9 and will serve as an ideal preparation for the Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travellers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travellers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now – let your inner child rejoice!

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

  • Bengaluru will host the limited-overs leg of the tour

India are set to host South Africa for a full-fledged multi-format women’s series in June and July. The itinerary starts with the one-off Test in Chennai from June 28. The red-ball match will be followed by the white-ball leg of the tour in Bengaluru. The ODIs are scheduled to take place on June 16, 19 and 23 followed by the T20Is on July 5, 7 and 9.

Last year, Women’s Tests returned to India after 9 years when Harmanpreet and Co. locked horns with Alyssa Healy’s Australia at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. Thereafter, India faced Heather Knight’s England at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The ODI and T20I series between India and South Africa were supposed to be played last year, but had to be postponed due to the Men’s ODI World Cup. The women’s Future Tour Program (FTP) did not have the one-off Test, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket South Africa (BCCI) decided to add it to promote Women’s Tests.

India's women team to host South Africa for an all-format tour in June-July window - Reports

T he Indian women's team are set to play matches across all formats against the touring South Africa side in June-July prior to the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup. According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the white-ball leg of the series will be hosted by Bengaluru, while Chennai will witness the one-off Test.

The tour is reportedly set to kick off with the ODI series, beginning on June 16 and ending on June 23. The T20I series matches will take place on July 5, 7, and 9. The one-off Test is not part of the women's FTP like the white ball leg is. However, it was incorporated into the itinerary as part of both the CSA and BCCI's collective vision and ongoing efforts to promote women's Test.

The white-ball matches were reportedly slated to be played in 2023 along with a visit from New Zealand in the July-September window, but the tours were postponed as India were preparing to host the 2023 ODI World Cup.

With Bengaluru and Chennai scheduled to host the matches, more centres will be witnessing women's cricket. Earlier, it was Mumbai that hosted the entirety of England and Australia's tours to India, with even the Wankhede Stadium hosting a Test. Bengaluru recently hosted the 2024 Women's Premier League (WPL) along with Delhi.

India and South Africa women's team have had contrasting fortunes of late

The Indian women's team are currently involved in a T20 series against Bangladesh. The Harmanpreet Kaur- led side have already attained an unassailable 3-0 series lead following a comfortable seven-wicket win in the third match.

Team India had a memorable home season prior to the WPL, where they hosted both England and Australia. The Women in Blue recorded thumping wins in the respective one-off Tests, but failed to secure any of the white-ball series against the heavyweights.

South Africa, on the other hand, led by Laura Wolvaardt across formats, recently failed to win against Sri Lanka at home in a white-ball series. They also did not fare well during the tour of Australia in the January-February window. The women's team lost across all formats, including a one-off Test in Perth.

South Africa toured India for a red-ball clash in 2014-15, where the hosts won. That contest marked one of their last Test matches for eight years. They returned to the red-ball circuit in 2022, with an away Test against England, which ended in a draw.

South Africa vs India, 3rd Test - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

south africa tour to india

Dean Elgar goes upto the podium to collect the series trophy, and he's soon joined by his squad who all want a piece of that silverware. They're yelling and screaming in joy as they pose for the photographs. And with that, we draw curtains to our coverage of this Test series. From India's perspective, it was a glorious opportunity lost to win their maiden Test series in South Africa, a chance that's gone down the drain. But maybe, it's the rude awakening that they need to make some obvious corrections to their Test squad. Kohli didn't mince words about those issues either and it now remains to be seen whether the required actions are taken in the batting department. As for South Africa, this could be the opening chapter of a hopefully successful transition. You could certainly see the fire burning in Elgar's eyes when he spoke. It was a cracking Test series all-round, and we enjoyed bringing it to you. Hopefully, you enjoyed every bit of it as well. On that note, this is Hari Sadanandan signing off on behalf of Akshay Maanay , Raju Peethala and Siva . Cheers!

Keegan Petersen | Player of the Match | Player of the Series : It hasn't sunk in yet. It's a mixed bag to be honest. Happy, emotional. I was trying to be positive and then build on that. It's been difficult conditions all around and was just sticking to my guns. It's been a long journey, can't tell the whole story now, won't be over till tomorrow morning. It's been challenging surfaces, challenging bowling attacks. We knew it was going to be difficult - they're a high quality bowling attack, a high quality team. We just wanted to have the mindset to fight it out. Enjoying it (success) a lot. The longer you bat, the easier it gets (on these pitches). So, just enjoyed it a lot.

Dean Elgar | South Africa captain: Pretty elated. Obviously will sink in a day or two, maybe this evening. Really proud. We were thrown under the sword quite a few times this series and the guys responded brilliantly. Obviously, to bounce back after losing the first game, to believe that we could still win. Extremely happy. (On how things turned around) Challenging your players, you need characters within the group and the bowling unit has been excellent all series. I had put up a challenge after the first game and the guys responded brilliantly. Helps to have a group that doesn't have any real big names, they like to rally together and play as one. And that's crucial. Extremely proud of this group of players that we have here. Ultimately, if you want to operate at our performance levels, you need tough chats and I'm a bit of old-school mentality with a new-school twist. I laid a few challenges, even to some of the senior players as well. It was great to see the guys take my message on board. It's great to see the guys buying in to you from a captain's point of view. I think us as a closed group, has helped us to feed off each other. We've played as a unit and we've grown massively as a group in the last two Tests. If you want to compete in Test cricket and be no.1 someday, you have to beat the best in the world. I'm really happy that things went well for us. Could easily have gone wrong and I'd have had egg on my face. As I said earlier, really proud of this group. We're by no means a finished article, I can tell you that. I'm already thinking of the next series. There are some negatives also that we need to work on. I think the way he (Petersen) responded since the first game has been immense. Always known him as a good player, he's gotten into a great player mould now and it's a lot to say for a player who has hardly played a handful of games. He has dominated domestic cricket for a while now and it's great to see him do so well in the last two Tests. He's willing to learn and you need characters like that.

Virat Kohli | India captain: I think it's a great spectacle of Test cricket for all to see. We played well in the first game to win but South Africa bounced back well in the second and carried on the momentum in the third as well. There was some lapse of concentration from us as well in key moments. I thought South Africa performed better in those key moments and totally deserved the win. One of the challenges that we have faced touring abroad is to capitalise on momentum when it is on our side. Whenever we have done that, we've won games. But on other hand, when we haven't done so, we have lost matches due to 30-45 minutes of cricket where we have batted badly. The opposition bowlers bowled well this series but generally, we haven't been consistent. We have had too many batting collapses. Of course, it (batting) has been the reason, no doubt about that. Their bowlers were just better in terms of their execution and applying pressure. Batting is certainly something to be looked at. No excuses there. It's really disappointing for sure. We did well in Australia and England but that doesn't guarantee us success in South Africa. The reality is that we haven't won here in South Africa and we have to deal with it. KL's batting as an opener. Mayank getting stuck in and then Rishabh's innings this game, these are some positives that we can take home. Also obviously, our win at Centurion was special.

Take no credit away from this young South African batting line-up though. Petersen was the star, as he was at the Wanderers but also precious were the nuggety knocks from Van der Dussen and Bavuma - two key middle order spots that probably was the difference between the two sides on the batting front. India too had their odd quality knock from their batters but had no support for that player, and it hurt them big. In a series where the surfaces offered quite a lot for the seamers, batting was bound to be the difference maker, particularly with two quality bowling attacks on show. While India's pace attack cancelled off South Africa's, the visitors' batting certainly let them down yet again on an overseas tour. It's been a trend of late, but the bowling had papered over those cracks. Not this series and you'd think that it's time for serious introspection regarding the batting unit. As for the Proteas, they'd be on cloud nine, not just due to the result but also due to the promising stars that they have unearthed. There might still be room for improvement but there surely is light at the end of the tunnel.

13:43 Local Time, 11:43 GMT, 17:13 IST: Technically speaking, it's another home series win for South Africa against India. But when you consider all factors, this is a historic achievement for the Proteas. For a young side undergoing transition, and then enduring another retirement mid-series, to come back from 0-1 down against the top-ranked side in the world is just incredible to say the least. More so when you realise that both wins came through run chases and significant ones at that. Of course, 212 here wasn't as daunting as the 240 last game but with the series on the line, the pressure was as much, if not more. But Petersen and Elgar had done the hard yards yesterday, and despite the latter's dismissal at the fag end of the day, the duo's stand had put the home side firmly in the driver's seat. It required a miracle from India today but that simply didn't happen. Maybe they went searching too much for wickets and lost the plot.

Ashwin to Bavuma, FOUR , a smash and a roar from Bavuma to propel SA to a famous series win! He had a chat with van der Dussen prior to this delivery, not sure what it was, maybe was about finishing it in one blow. Got across early and slog swept this powerfully over square leg. Nobody in the deep, so as soon as he hit it, he knew, his partner knew and so did his mates in the dug out. Mission accomplished!

Ashwin to van der Dussen, 5 runs, sloppy cricket from India! Seems like they're frustrated and want to end this quick. Was a fuller one that van der Dussen nudged towards backward point for a single. Umesh has a very wild throw at the keeper's end, wide of Pant and nobody backing up in that region. Bonus runs

Ashwin to van der Dussen, no run, quicker one on leg stump, van der Dussen stays back and defends

How to watch the giro d’italia for free, what happened last year, riders to watch.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d’Italia:

Dates: Saturday, May 4 - Sunday, May 26

How to Watch the Giro d’Italia in the U.S.

If you’re a Max subscriber ($9.99/month), then you have access to the streaming platform’s B/R Sports package, which is the only legal way to stream the Giro d’Italia in the USA. For now, the package is free to all regular Max subscribers, but at some point, it will cost an additional $9.99 each month. That’s not as affordable as GCN+ used to be, but considering everything else you get with the B/R Sports package (such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coverage) it’s a pretty good deal.

Max has a user-friendly app for smartphones, streaming devices, game consoles, and smart TVs. There’s also an easy-to-navigate website, which is a helpful option for streaming the race from work. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.)

You could cancel your monthly subscription at the end of the race, but remember that Max will be offering live streams of many road, mountain, track, and cyclocross races throughout the rest of the year. If that floats your boat, consider getting an annual subscription for $99.99 (or $149.99 for ad-free streaming).

If you live in Canada, you can catch the action on FloBikes ($29.99 monthly or $150 for the year). Stream or cast from your desktop, mobile, or TV. The app is now available on Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, and Apple TV. And live coverage starts at 7:45 AM EDT for most stages.

While we haven’t found legal ways to watch the Giro LIVE for free, you may be able to catch extended highlights on NBC/Peackock’s YouTube Channel a couple of hours after the events. However, where there is a will, there is a way. Just, “be careful with the ads.”

The 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia covers 3,386.7K (2,138 miles) over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, seven stages with uphill finishes, and six to eight stages expected to end with field sprints.

map

This year’s Grande Partenza takes place in Piemonte, near the French-Italian Alps, with two challenging road stages that will force the Giro’s GC contenders to be at their best right away. Stage 1, a 136K stage from Venaria Reale to Torino, features three categorized climbs–including the Superga and the Colle Maddalena–but it’s a short, punchy, uncategorized ascent just before the finish that could determine the stage winner.

Stage 2 begins in San Francesco al Campo and ends after 150K with this year’s first summit finish–on the Category 1 Santuario di Oropa, the climb on which deceased Italian legend Marco Pantani took one of his most famous stage wins in 1999. By the end of the first weekend, the GC battle will already be in full swing.

chart, histogram

The race then begins working its way south, and Stages 3, 4, and 5—which finish in Fossano, Andora, and Lucca, respectively—should be days for the Giro’s sprinters. (Although the finishes of Stages 3 and 4 feature ramps inside the final 10K that could thwart the fast men.) Stage 6 brings the race from the coast into Tuscany (it finishes in Rapolano Terme) and features 12K of the strade bianche (“white gravel roads”) that give March’s Strade Bianche road race its name. If there’s one stage during the first week that has the potential to cause a few surprises, it’s this one.

Stage 7 is the first individual time trial of the Giro, and it’s a tough one: beginning in Foligno, the 37.2K race against the clock starts with over 30K of flat roads. But there’s a nasty sting in the course’s tail: a 6.5K climb to the finish line that starts steep and then ascends more gradually to the line. Riders who don’t pace themselves on the flat part of the course could explode on the final climb. There could be large time gaps here.

chart

Starting in Spoleto, Stage 8 brings the second summit finish of the first week–on the Category 1 Prati di Tivo, a 14K climb in the Umbrian Apennines with an average gradient of 7%. With a field sprint expected in Napoli at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9 (after a 214K stage that starts in Avezzano), Stages 7 and 8 will determine which rider will wear the maglia rosa into the Giro’s first Rest Day.

chart, histogram

The second week begins in Pompeii with Stage 10, a 142K stage that features a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, a 20.9K climb with a deceiving 4.6% average gradient. The first few kilometers are actually downhill, so the climb is actually harder than its statistics suggest.

chart, histogram

We expect Stage 11 (207K) to end with a field sprint in Francavilla al Mare, and Stage 12—with a jagged 190K stage through the Marche region (an area known for its muri or “walls”)—looks like the perfect day for a breakaway filled with puncheurs and riders who perform well in the spring classics. Friday’s Stage 13 is the flattest stage of this year’s race, which is probably a good thing considering the next two stages. This 179K stage from Riccione to Cento will be an active rest day for much of the peloton.

chart

And they’ll need one because the third weekend begins with Stage 14–the Giro’s second individual time trial–a generally flat, 31K course from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda. This is a day for the Giro’s time trial specialists; the pure climbers will struggle to stay within shouting distance of their more powerful colleagues.

But they’ll have a chance for revenge on Sunday, when the race heads into the Alps for Stage 15, a 220K monster stage (the longest in this year’s race) with five categorized climbs, including back-to-back 2000m summits (both Category 1 ascents) at the end of the day, with a summit finish at the Mottolino ski resort just above Livigno. This weekend should blow the Giro wide open, leaving just a handful of riders still in contention to win the race overall.

chart, histogram

The third week begins the same way the second week ends, with a 200K, high-altitude mountain stage. Stage 16 features the granddaddy of them all: the Stelvio, this year’s “Cima Coppi” as the highest summit in the race. Topping out at over 2700m, the climb comes early in the stage but will nonetheless offer a rude awakening to a peloton that’s coming out of the second Rest Day. After a long ride down into and through a valley, the day ends with the Category 1 Passo Pinei and then a summit finish on the Category 2 Monte Pana, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.

chart, histogram

At “just” 159K, Stage 17 is much shorter than the previous two mountain stages, but it’s jammed with five categorized climbs, including the Category 2 Passo Sella and the Category 1 Passo Rolle. The day ends with two ascents of the Category 1 Passo Brocon, which the riders climb for a second time on their way to the finish line. This will be an intense stage, and it could pose a challenge for the team defending the pink jersey to control. The riders will be either climbing or descending from start to finish and if someone’s going to stage a third-week ambush, it could come here.

The next two stages offer a break from the mountains. Stage 18 brings a 166K downhill ride from Fiera di Primiero to Padua that should end with a field sprint. Stage 19 looks like the perfect chance for a small group of opportunists–who have likely been saving themselves in the high mountains–to escape and fight for a breakaway stage win in Sappada.

The 154K stage begins in Mortegliano and climbs steadily throughout the day, culminating with three categorized climbs in the second half stage, the last of which the riders summit just 7K from the finish. After so many days of intense climbing–and with one more day in the mountains still to come–the peloton could just sit back and let the break go all the way to the finish.

chart, histogram

That sets the stage for Stage 20, the last chance for anyone hoping to steal the 2024 Giro d’Italia from whoever's been leading it. And–as the last two editions have shown us–that’s a realistic possibility. Starting in Alpago, the stage rolls along for about 85K before the first of two ascents of the Monte Grappa, an 18K climb with an average gradient of 8.1%–that’s steep . This isn’t a stage with a summit finish–the race finishes in Bassano del Grappa after a long descent from the top of the Monte Grappa down into the valley below–but even without one, the stage should still provide a dramatic conclusion to the Giro’s GC battle.

The race concludes Sunday in Rome with a 122K road stage featuring several circuits through the Eternal City. The day will begin with clinking glasses of prosecco, and end with one last chance for the sprinters to grab some glory.

You can find the elevation profiles and course maps for each 2024 Giro d’Italia stage here .

For the second year in a row, the 2023 Giro d’Italia was decided on the grand tour’s penultimate day. In 2022, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) took the pink jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) on Stage 20. Hindley won a mountain stage at the end of the grand tour’s first week, then hung around near the top of the General Classification before seizing his moment late in the Giro’s final mountain stage and winning the race overall.

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 20

In 2023, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) followed the same formula, albeit without an early-stage win. After Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—who had won two stages and was wearing the pink jersey as the Giro’s overall leader—was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day, Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) took the maglia rosa . With the exception of the two days straddling the second Rest Day, Thomas held the jersey for much of the second and third weeks.

But he cracked on Stage 20, an 18.6K uphill time trial from Tarvisio to the summit of the Monte Lussari. Roglič, who entered the day just 26 seconds behind Thomas on GC, won the stage by 40 seconds, taking the pink jersey–and the 2023 Giro–by a slim margin.

Thomas held on to finish second, and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished third. Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the Points Classification, France’s Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Almeida was the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

106th giro dell'emilia 2023

With most of the sport’s best grand tour riders (including Roglič) racing the Tour de France this summer, this year’s Giro has a short list of overall contenders, a list that’s headlined by one of the sport’s true superstars: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

The 25-year-old has never raced the Giro, and he takes the starting line this year as the favorite to win and dominate it. Then he’s planning to head to the Tour, where he’s hoping to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers)

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 20

Pogačar’s biggest challenger will likely be Geraint Thomas, who’s coming back to the Giro after last year’s disappointment. The 37-year-old (he’ll turn 38 during the race) will have a strong and experienced team supporting him–and the course suits him–but he’ll have a hard time overcoming Pogačar.

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike)

3rd o gran camintildeo the historical route 2024 stage 4

We’ll also be keeping an eye on Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who made headlines last December when it was announced that he was breaking his contract with BORA-hansgrohe (who had recently signed Roglič away from Jumbo) to join the Dutch superteam.

The winner of the Tour de l‘Avenir in 2022, Uijtdebroeks just turned 21 and is widely considered to be a future grand tour contender. Without Belgium’s Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Giro due to injuries he sustained in a crash at a race in Belgium a few weeks ago, Uijtdebroeks becomes the focus of the team’s Giro plans. And with a strong squad alongside him, he could finish on the podium and is the easy pick to become the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)

40th vuelta ciclista a la regioacuten de murcia quotcosta calidaquot 2024

Other GC contenders include Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), a former fourth-place finisher at the Tour de France and Giro stage-winner; Italy’s Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), a former Giro podium-finisher; Colombia’s Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), a former fifth-place finisher at the Giro; Great Britain’s Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), a two-time top-10 finisher; and France’s Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), a former Tour de France podium finisher who was seventh at the Giro in 2021 but might be more of stage hunter this year.

Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek)

77th tour de romandie 2024 prologue

Other stage hunters include Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), a three-time stage winner who was the Giro’s King of the Mountains in 2019; France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who’s riding his first Giro; and Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), who’s hoping to complete a hat-trick of grand tour stage victories with a win in Italy.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar)

4th tour colombia 2024 stage 5

One of the most controversial riders in this year’s Giro will be Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar), winner of the Giro in 2014. But the 34-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing sixth overall in the 2022 Tour de France and then having his results disqualified after testing positive for tramadol, a painkiller that’s banned by the UCI (but not banned by WADA). He’s now back in the WorldTour with the team that made him famous. His return has not been a popular one , though, and it will be interesting to see how he’s received in Italy.

The Giro also offers several stage win opportunities for field sprinters, and that–plus the fact that the Tour de France is very not sprinter-friendly–means there will be lots of them taking the start, including Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek); Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal–Quick Step); Dutch sprinters Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and Australia’s Sam Welsford (BORA-Hansgrohe), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck); and Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).

Last but not least, the Giro will see several North Americans taking the start, with Americans Larry Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers), and Will Barta (Movistar) joining Woods on the starting line, with more expected to join them as teams finalize their rosters.
