Star Trek Timelines Beginner Cadet Guide

The Little Book Of Cadet Advice

Hello and welcome, this guide is for new players who are working out whom to keep in their crew rosters when their crew slots fill up. I’m also aiming for this document to be a good guide on who’s good for what Cadet Missions and general early-game voyages.

Inspiration for this comes from the Big Book Of Behold Advice written by Automaton_2000 which has been very handy for picking and choosing 4* crew and above.

Like the Big Book this is entirely subjective, however there are some practical applications in the early game for choosing the right crew to begin with. Getting missions and cadets completed early game are more important for new players than getting long voyage times and I hope to address this with the tiered list of Common, Uncommon and Rare crew members to focus on.

Each rarity of crewmember is assessed for different conditions. I could have separated each rarity into its own tier list however I believe visually it’s better to have them all in one grouping. However it’s worth noting that no matter what, each rarity of card will have better stats than the rarity below. Whilst I have rated some common cards highers than rares, this is for overall usefulness rather than pure numbers.

Common 1* : Rated more on their early game usages. Unlocking nodes and early ship battles. Collections provide a big bonus to a common cards rating. Note that no Common Card will ever be rated above Tier 07.

Uncommon 2* : Rated on mid-week cadet mission usefulness, early game traits, day to day use and collection bonuses. Statistics are rated to a degree but only compared to other Uncommon and Common cards.

Rare 3* : Rated on statistics, weekend cadet mission usefulness, day to day use and ship battles. Voyage ranking is a big consideration. Gauntlet and collections are also rated but not a major influencer.

Information was gathered through a combination of the Top 100 Crew Spreadsheet and the STT Wiki .

Once in a blue moon DB do grace us with low level crew and I will try to keep this document updated when they are added. Version History is at the bottom of the document.

A Brief Glossary Of Terms

Statistics and Proficiencies : Each crew member’s skills has a base total and a proficiency bonus. So for example Captain Picard might have a DIP base of 150, his minimum score. Then his proficiency in that will add between 30-70 extra points randomly to that score. This can be viewed on the characters statistic screen in the crew quarters.

Voyage Rank : This is the total score of a crewmembers base rank plus the average of their proficiency. Ideally you want to have a crew with large scores in multiple skill sets. Crew members with only one skill are ranked lower than someone who can add multiple skills to the voyage. See the Wiki article on Voyages for more information.

Gauntlet : The Gauntlet uses only the proficiency bonuses of a crew and not the base rank when determining a score. As a rule 1-3* Rarity cards are not going to be very useful for Gauntlet, but there are a few exceptions.

Portal : This is the pool of characters from which all pulls are drawn from. Not all characters are currently in the portal and cannot be found by purchasing standard crew packs. They might be added in the future and I will update this document to reflect that.

Fused Crew : Four crew members of note can be fused into higher tiered cards. Lursa and B’Etor Duras can be fused into the Duras Sisters. Ambassador Neelix and Security Chief Tuvok can be fused into Tuvix. The best way to achieve this is to level up one of the cards to Level 99 (not 100) and fully equip them, then fuse them with the alternative card. This saves a lot of time equipping a harder card. Check the Big Book Of Behold Advice for the ratings of the fused cards.

Cadet Missions : A priority for all new crew. Completing cadet missions unlocks lots of bonuses for your day to day priorities as well as hard to get items, some of which can only be found in faction stores. Monday/Wednesday/Friday are the most important as each mission completed will earn Chronitons. Combines with Adwarps a MWF mission could yield up to 400 Chronitons a day.

Riker’s Angels: A community term for crewmembers who can participate in all three of the weekday cadet missions. Being a combination of Starfleet, Alien and Female.

Crew Abilities

Ship Combat is a core gameplay mechanic in Star Trek Timelines , and a key part of Ship Combat are the abilities your crew bring to the battle. As captains of a starship, players may build and upgrade two dozen different ships, from common ships like the Constellation Class to Legendary ships like the Borg Cube . Those ships may be used in Missions , or in the Arena . Alongside those ships are hundreds of crew , who provide all sorts of abilities for your ships.

Crew Ability Overview

Crew Abilities are broken down into two types: Standard abilities and special abilities . All abilities only apply when a crew member is tapped in combat, and only for a period of time.

Standard abilities are the primary stat modifiers that you see on the crew’s portrait. It’s what you should think of when you see a red “+5” next to a crew. This ability increases the stats of your ship while it’s active. All crew have an inherent ability.

Special abilities are specific actions that occur when that crew is activated. Some crew provide a one-time damage bonus; others may modify your crit rating or crit bonus. Some crew may not have any special abilities at all.

Many special abilities are triggered only when your ship has the capability of Cloaking , Positional , or Boarding , and that ship feature has been activated. For an overview which ships can provide which triggers, see ships .

Your crew also have Initialize , Cooldown , and Duration . The crew’s Initialize is how long from the beginning of the battle you need to wait until you can use their ability. This means that an initial warm-up of 15s prevents me from using that crew for the first 15s. Cooldown is how long you need to wait after using the crew for them to recharge. And Duration is how long their ability stays active.

NOTE: Some crew abilities come with a penalty as well. For example, a crew ability may increase Attack by 3, but at a cost of reducing your Evasion by 1. Look for the details by tapping and holding on your crew’s ability, or when slotting them into your Battle Stations.

Equipment Bonuses

Your ship’s crew slots have a bonus. If you slot a crew member that meets that bonus, they will apply an equipment bonus to your ship. This equipment bonus is a passive bonus that applies to your ship while it is in combat. It is only active if you match a crew member of the correct type with the ships slot type. You may still slot different crew in that spot, but they will not give their equipment bonus.

Activating Crew Abilities of the Same Type

When adding crew to your Battle Stations, you’re able to slot in crew with the same type of standard ability. That means, if you wanted to, you could slot in four crew that all changed your Attack stats. What happens when you attempt to use those crew at the same time?

First, the crew with the highest value gets applied to your ship. When activating two crew at the same time that have the same type of bonus, the highest value is applied to your ship.

Second, this is recalculated if an ability ends, so if you had two crew who applied a bonus of 9 and 7, and the 9 bonus ended but the 7 bonus continued, you would see your ship attack increase by 9, then decrease to 7 when the higher value crew ended their ability.

Third, changes to your ship’s stats from your crew don’t stack. If you had three crew activated, and all three modified your attack, only the change from the highest value crew would be applied. NOTE: Specific crew abilities, like one-time damage increases or modifiers, would still affect your ship even if the crew’s primary stat isn’t applied.

Changelings In Star Trek: Discovery - Did Season 1 Burnham Know About DS9's Villains?

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange" Mutineer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) calls her future self a "shapeshifter" during Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, but does this mean that she's aware of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Changeling villains? In Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange", Burnham, Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) are thrown backwards and forwards in time by a Krenim time bug. To return to the 32nd century, Burnham is forced to fight her younger self, who believes that she's a shapeshifting infiltrator determined to sabotage the USS Discovery .

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange" was written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose.

Changeling infiltrators caused many problems for Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and the crew of Deep Space Nine during the Dominion War. However, DS9 's conflict with the Dominion and its Changeling Founders took place a century after the climactic scenes of Discovery season 5, episode 4 , during which the Federation was at war with the Klingon Empire. This makes it unlikely, but not impossible, for the season 1 version of Michael Burnham to be referring to one of DS9 's Changelings in Star Trek: Discovery .

Every Changeling In DS9 (Besides Odo)

Season 1 burnham probably isn't referring to ds9's changelings in discovery.

Official First Contact with the Changelings didn't take place until the 24th century , in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's two-part season 3 premiere "The Search". This means that it's unlikely that Season 1 Burnham wasn't referring to a DS9 Changeling while trying to foil Season 5 Burnham, Rayner, and Stamets' "sabotage" in Star Trek: Discovery . However, DS9 established that the Changelings had been exploring the galaxy for eons before the 24th century . This creates the outside chance that the season 1 version of Burnham had encountered one of DS9 's Changelings prior to joining the USS Discovery.

The Female Changeling, the species' spokesperson, was played by Salome Jens, who also played the Progenitor in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "The Chase", to which Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is a sequel.

Constable Odo (Rene Auberjonois) was one of 100 Changelings that were sent out into the galaxy, " centuries ago ". Odo only ever met one of the hundred Changelings, Laas (J.G. Hertzler), who arrived on the planet Varala in the 22nd century, 100 years before Star Trek: Discovery's timeline begins. Odo made it further than Laas, arriving in the Alpha Quadrant, where he was discovered by Bajoran scientists. It's possible, therefore, that other members of the Hundred Changelings were encountered by Burnham while she served aboard the USS Shenzhou. Alternatively, Burnham was referring to one of the many Star Trek shapeshifters that aren't Changelings .

Star Trek Shapeshifters That Aren't Changelings

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Changelings are just one of many aliens that have the ability to change their shape to imitate other forms . One of the most memorable shape-shifting alien species in the Star Trek canon was the Chameleoid, Marcia (Iman), who both kissed and impersonated Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . Another shape-shifting alien with romantic intentions was Species 8472 from Star Trek: Voyager , one of whom impersonated Valerie Archer (Kate Vernon) and romanced Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran).

Shape-shifting could even be taught, as seen in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Whom Gods Destroy" , in which Garth of Izar (Steve Ihnat) showed off the abilities he learned from the Antos natives. The Traveler from Star Trek: The Next Generation also had shapeshifting abilities, impersonating Wesley Crusher's father Jack in "Journey's End". Some members of Star Trek: Enterprise 's Suliban species had technology that enabled them to shape-shift, enabling them to infiltrate various situations. With so many shapeshifters in the Star Trek universe, it's no wonder that Burnham was so paranoid in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4.

Star Trek: Discovery streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.
