Top 10 Reasons To Visit Armenia

Mount Ararat

Armenia has wrongly been overlooked as a go-to destination for tourists, but if you visit, you will find a rich cultural heritage where ancient sights and delicious food abound. Throw in the friendly atmosphere (and copious opportunities for extreme sports) and it’s clear that Armenia’s reputation is due for a change. Here are the top 10 reasons to visit Armenia.

Geghard Monastery

Explore The First Christian Country In The world

Did you know that Armenia was the first country in the world that adopted Christianity as a state religion? It happened in 301 AD with the assistance of Gregory the Illuminator and Armenian king Trdat III. The country began the destruction of pagan temples and the construction of Christian churches. The very first was the Echmiadzin Cathedral , which became the first Christian cathedral in the world. You can see this magnificent creation in the town of Echmiadzin, the religious centre of all Armenians. Today, religious monuments of Christianity can be seen everywhere throughout Armenia. Look out for their majestic medieval architecture, which, juxtaposed against the striking surrounding landscapes, create a spectacular sight. We also recommend paying a visit to the mysterious Monastery of Geghard, half-carved in the rock and over 800 years old. Alternatively, fly over the deep gorge to the Monastery of Tatev, a pearl of medieval Armenian architecture, or visit the prison where Gregory The Illuminator suffered at the Monastery of Khor Virap.

Ararat Mount

It’s impossible to visit the capital of Armenia, Yerevan , without noticing its magnificent natural landmark, Mount Ararat. This emotive and awe-inspiring mountain is beautiful in any season. Traditionally, Mount Ararat was the symbol of the motherland for all Armenians, and it remains so today. Ararat is known as a Biblical mount, as it was mentioned in the Bible during the story of the Great Flood. According to the tale, Noah’s ark stopped exactly on the mount and after a while, he settled in the Ararat Valley with his family. Despite the fact that Ararat is visible from many parts of Yerevan, for the most beautiful view it is best to climb to the top of the Cascade, or go to the observation area in Victory Park . For a truly breathtaking view, drive out of Yerevan to the monastery of Khor Virap, where you will feel like you can almost touch the mountain.

Tatev ropeway

Take The Longest Ropeway In The World

You can get to the one of the most magnificent creations of medieval Armenian architecture, Tatev monastery , by a ropeway, which happens to be the longest in the world (5.8 kilometres, or 3.6 miles). Not one for those with a fear of heights, as you’ll find yourself walking at 320 meters (1050 feet) above the picturesque gorge of the River Vorotan for 12 minutes. At the end of the journey, you’ll arrive at a unique monastery, built in the 9th-13th centuries.

Armenia is a landlocked country and it’s important to know that it’s not possible to get to Armenia overland from Turkey or Azerbaijan because of political issues.

2. Armenian Nature

Armenia has a surprisingly diverse nature for being such a small country… from mesmerizing green canyons and gorges to dry and colorful mountains to semi-desert landscapes.

The biggest lake in the Caucasus is also found in Armenia. Lake Sevan , is considered to be the blue pearl of the country. It is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, little islands, and gorgeous villages.

Things to know before you come to Armenia

There are several national parks and reserves all over the country such as Dilijan National Park or the Khosrov Reserve , a place considered to be one of the oldest protected areas in history. Approximately seventeen centuries ago, the reserve was founded and its ecosystem is absolutely amazing.

3. Seasons in Armenia

Each season has a different beauty in the Caucasian country. You can hike in the colorful autumn mountains, ski, and snowboard in Tsaghkadzor spa town in the winter, or chill out in green Dilijan guesthouses in the summer.

Spring is also special in Armenia because of the vibrant colors and blooming flowers saturating the country.

4. Armenian Culture and History

Armenia is one of those rare countries that still exists despite having more than 6000 years of history. Many civilizations have disappeared over the decades, but as a surprise to many, Armenia has managed to conserve its cultural heritage with traditions that still exist today.

There is a lot of archeological evidence that shows existing civilizations in the Bronze Age in the modern theory of Armenia dating back to 4000 BC.

It’s possible to see heritage from the different stages of Armenian history, like the Pagan Temple of Garni or the Christian churches in Etchmiadzin that were one of the first in history as Armenia was the first country that adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD.

Armenian has pretty much all types of weather- from hot summers to dry, cold winters with significant amounts of snow in almost all regions of the country.

The hottest time in Armenia is from June to September when the temperature can fluctuate between 37- 40 Celsius, but the evenings promise a cool breeze coming from the mountains. What is Armenia Known For?

As we mentioned before, Armenia is an ancient country and its heritage from different times in history is unique and somewhat well-known worldwide.

The small country has many sights that are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and there are still many undiscovered places that are gaining more and more interest from archaeologists.

Below are a few things that have put Armenia on the map.

5. First Christian Nation in the World

Armenia is the first country that adopted Christianity as an official state religion in 301 AD, over 1700 years ago.

The major figure of the spread of Christianity in Armenia was Gregory The Illuminator who was first dungeoned because of his religious view in Khor Virap . He was imprisoned for 13 years but was later released by Tiridates III.

Gregory the Illuminator is the founder of the Armenian Church and responsible for Armenia becoming a Christian nation.

Things to know before you come to Armenia

The Armenian Church is known as apostolical because of two students, Bartholomew and Thaddeus of Jesus. Thaddeus came to Armenia to try to spread Christianity after his crucifixion.

The first Christian churches in Armenia, and probably some of the first ones in the world, were built and still exist in the city of Etchmiadzin today.  The city name translates to “the only born came down”.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral, St. Hripsime, Zvartnots church ruins, and others are protected by UNESCO World Heritage today and are some of the top things to see in Armenia.

6. UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Armenia

As just mentioned, the churches and cathedrals in and around Etchmiadzin are protected by UNESCO.

Other important places that are UNESCO sites in Armenia are Geghard Monastery and the Upper Azat Valley and the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin .

7. Armenian Duduk

For more than 3000 years, this amazing instrument, with soul-touching sounds, has existed in Armenia and when it’s being played, it feels like time stops.

Duduk, or the original historical name Tsiranapogh, is an Armenian wooden instrument that looks very simple at first glance and in translation means “apricot-made clarinet”.

The sound of the Armenian duduk is so magical that it was placed on the list of Masterpieces of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO .

8. Ararat Mountain

A legendary and iconic mountain for all Armenians that is technically located in the modern territory of Turkey is the mountain ‘Ararat’, also known as Holy Mountain.

Ararat is a two-peak mountain made up of small Sis and big Masis mountains and has been represented in Armenian history since ancient times, known as a holy mountain and symbol with an elevation of 5,137 meters.

It is a Biblical mountain since it is mentioned in the Bible that Noah’s ark landed on Mount Ararat and it is where life supposedly started after the flood.

Things to know before you come to Armenia

9. Lavash (Bread)

A unique flatbread that is in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is Lavash .

Not a single ingredient has changed over the centuries in the preparation of ancient Lavash bread in Armenia… even the cooking method has remained the same!

Armenian traditional lavash has very simplistic ingredients but it is one of the tastiest breads in the world. It consists of flour, water, and salt. That’s it!

Lavash is baked in the traditional tonir (tandoor), a clay hole in the ground. That is how the bread has been baked for centuries and you can even see it baked in several places in Armenia today this way (including some restaurants that have open kitchens like Sherep and Lavash ).

In Armenia, there is a special name for cheese and herbs wrapped in a lavash – ‘ bruch ‘. It’s one of the simplest, yet most delicious things in the world.

Another interesting fact about lavash bread is that it’s possible to dry it and keep it for over 6 months, then wet it when ready to eat. Armenians have been doing this for centuries and it lasts without any problems.

Things to know before you come to Armenia

10. Khor Virap Monastery

Translated from Armenian, Khor Virap means deep dungeon and this is where Gregory The Illuminator was jailed for 14 years.

Khor Virap is one of the most special places to visit in Armenia because of its location and mind-blowing view of Mount Ararat.

The 5th-century Church of the Holy Mother of God that is located on a hilltop gives it another charm and is an amazing addition to the view of Mount Ararat, which seems surprisingly close despite being rather far away by distance.

Khor Virap is surrounded by green fields and vineyards and the monastery is one of the gems of Armenia that no one should miss when visiting the country (or Ararat marz !).

It is also extremely easy to get from Yerevan to Khor Virap with options on public transportation, as well as affordable tour options.

11. Ararat Brandy

Like we mentioned before Mount Ararat and its name is iconic and very popular among Armenians. You will see many brands that have Ararat in their name but one of the most popular brands that exist in Armenia and is known worldwide is Ararat Brandy (or cognac as the locals say).

The legendary and famous Ararat brandy factory is located in Yerevan on top of a hill next to the Hrazdan gorge and has a big history and legacy to tell.

Armenian Brandy actually gained popularity at the beginning of the 20th century because of Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill.

At the Yalta Conference in 1945, Joseph Stalin presented Winston Churchill with a bottle of Ararat Brandy (Dvin).  Winston Churchill, a fervent brandy lover, fell in love with Ararat Brandy and as a result, Stalin sent Churchill 400 bottles of Dvin batch Ararat Brandy annually.

Hrazdan Gorge things to do and Yerevan off the path guide

For Armenians, besides wine, cognac has to be of top quality and that quality has been delivered for more than 100 years by Ararat brandy and this is just one more thing that puts Armenia on the map.

It’s also possible to take a tour of the factory to see how Ararat brandy is made, learn the history of the factory, and enjoy the brandy itself with some great dried fruits and chocolate.

12. Armenian Carpets (Rugs)

For centuries, Armenians have been known for creating one of the best and most beautiful carpets in the world. It is a tradition to have a carpet inside an Armenian house as a part of the interior decoration.

It is possible to see how carpets and rugs are made in Armenia at the Megerian Carpet Center or Tufenkian Hotel next to the Vernissage.

The traditional ornaments are made by hand just like it was done centuries ago and these masterpieces are truly pleasing to the eye.

13. Khachkars

A unique and typical Armenian stone art known as ‘khachkars’ (cross-stones) is one of the most popular art forms in Armenia.

A khachkar is a big piece of stone with Christian art carved into it coming from the 4th century that shows the skills of the Armenian masters. There are still thousands of khachkars from ancient times that have been preserved until this day.

How to Easily Get From Yerevan to Noratus Cemetery

Because it is so special to Armenia, it is no surprise that its ornaments and symbols are included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

One of the most famous places to see Armenian khachkars from various decades of Armenian history is Noratus Cemetery . At Noratus, it is possible to see cross-stones from the 10th century! It is truly a fascinating, open-air museum.

14. History of the Silk Road in Armenia

When people think of the Silk Road, they more often than not think of China and Central Asia.  However, Armenia, like other places in the Caucasus, played an important role in trading on the Silk Road, especially Artashat.

While many remnants and traces of the Silk Road are gone in this part of the world, you can still see traces down in Vayots Dzor region at Orbelyan’s Caravanserai , an important inn for traders that existed and was saved.

15. Pomegranates and Apricots

The pomegranate is not only a fruit that grows in Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), but it is also phenomenal and widely used in food and is also one of the most popular symbols for Armenia used in art and architecture.

Walking down the streets of Yerevan, it is possible to see pomegranates engraved and carved into the buildings’ facades.

Nowhere else in the world do apricots (tsiran) grow and taste as delicious as they do in Armenia. The ancient fruit, mentioned in many old manuscripts, is truly the pride of Armenia.

Even the famous Duduk (Tsiranapogh) is made from the apricot tree. The fruit is widely used in Armenia and gets exported to many countries every year.

You will also find pomegranate and apricots used in foods and wines.

16. First Winery in the World

If you didn’t already know, the first winery known to the modern world was founded in Armenia in Areni village. It dates back to 6100 BC.

Areni is known to be one of the most popular wine regions of Armenia where the highest quality libation is made, so it was no surprise that they discovered the oldest winery in the world inside the Areni-1 Cave .

In Areni-1, it is possible to see where the wine was made and how the ancient, clay wine barrels were dug into the soil.

Saryan Street Yerevan Armenia - In Vino Wine Bar

In some of those barrels, young female bones were discovered as signs of sacrifice. It’s a truly unique place to visit in Armenia and to be able to see the traces of the world’s oldest winery.

Besides the winery, in the same Areni-1 cave, the world’s oldest leather shoe was discovered. It is approximately 5,500 years old.

17. Temple of Garni (Pagan Temple)

Even though Armenia has a big Christian history, its Pagan history is just as important. The perfect example is the only preserved Pagan Temple in the country. The Temple of Garni dates back to 1 AD and was dedicated to the God of Sun Mihr.

It is truly an amazing gem located on the edge of the Azat Gorge, yet another mind-blowing location that the ancient Armenian kings and queens used as a royal summer house.

The Temple of Garni is one of the most beloved places for travelers to visit because of its interesting structure and impressive location in the Caucasus region.

18. Tatev Monastery

If you want to learn about the spiritual life of Armenia, then it is a must to take a trip to Tatev Monastery . It has breathtaking architecture and is a spiritual Christian construction isolated from the world on the edge of the Vorotan River.

The 9th-century Tatev Monastery complex and the fortifications is an iconic Christian symbols of Armenia. It is located up in the mountains.  That is why, based on ancient myths, it is called Tatev, which translates to “give wings” in Armenian.

In the Middle Ages, Tatev Monastery was known as one of the best universities in Armenia where it was possible to study religion, science, and philosophy.

To get to Tatev Monastery, you need to ride on the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway which is 5.7 km long. The ride is gorgeous and the views are mesmerizing- you get the feeling that you are flying in the sky as you cross the gorge. This is why the tramway was given the name Wings of Tatev .

19. Armenia’s Velvet Revolution in 2018

Armenia has a remarkable ancient history and heritage, but modern Armenia also shows the world its effort to create a great democratic environment for its citizens and all the visitors to this beautiful country.

To move forward in 2018, the Armenian nation initiated a peaceful velvet revolution to remove its then-corrupt party from power as it was not leading the country with a democratic lifestyle or standards.

35 Very Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Armenia

Armenia’s example of a peaceful velvet revolution was exceptional for many post-Soviet countries showcasing that one small country facing many problems with corruption was able to unite and, without any victims, make changes to their country and its political system.

20. Yerevan Metro

Built during the Soviet era and becoming fully operational in 1981, the Yerevan Metro is probably one of the smallest metro systems in all post-Soviet countries. However, it is one of the best secrets of Yerevan as it is affordable, efficient, and will get you from point A to point B.

The Armenian government is working on opening more metro stops and the construction has already started. The current number of stops is limited (only ten!) but are very clean and have artistic designs.

The most noticeable Yerevan metro station is the post-modern Yeritasardakan (Youth) Station and the beautiful fountains at the Republic Square Station .

The full length of the metro is 13.4 km and the working hours are from 6.30 am to 11 pm. The price of a ticket is 100 AMD and you will notice that plastic coins are still being used in Armenia but there is talk that that will change shortly.

21. Armenian Language

The Armenian language is an Indo-European language and is considered to be one of the oldest in the world. The Armenian alphabet was invented by Mesrop Mashtots in 406 AD and faced several evolutions during the coming centuries.

In the language in Armenia, there is a “dead language” called Graphar. It is used during church ceremonies, but not in daily life.

35 Very Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Armenia

Nowadays, the Armenian language is divided into two parts: Western Armenian , which is used by the diaspora, and Eastern Armenian , which is used in Armenia today.

There are 39 letters in the Armenian alphabet and it is considered a national point of pride of the nation… so much that there is a monument dedicated to the Armenian Alphabet’s 1600th anniversary.

With an ancient alphabet, Armenia has many unique Armenian expressions that only other Armenians understand!

22. Western Armenia

The modern territory of Armenia is only 30% of what its historical territory was. The lands and territories have changed so many times throughout history.

Armenia used to be a lot bigger (territory-wise) in the past, but after the Armenian Genocide in 1915 and after becoming part of the Soviet Union, it lost its historical territories. Still today, Armenians refer to these lands as Western Armenia even though they fall under present-day Turkey.

Western Armenia used to be one of the biggest cultural and industrial centers of the region, and cities like Kars and Ani were the result of Armenians’ brilliant architectural and business minds.

Still today, there are many historical remains, churches, and cities that showcase why Armenians still consider Western Armenia a historical homeland.

23. Chess in Armenia

Despite its small population of only 3 million, Armenia has gained popularity around the world for its love and success at the game of chess.

Armenians love playing chess and it’s even part of their school program because they believe that the love for this intellectual game should start at a young age.

This small country has had several World Chess Champions : grandmaster Tigran Petrosian, Levon Aronian (one of the leaders of FIDE’s ranking list), and the Armenian National Chess team- which won the World Team Championship, European Team Championship, and the Chess Olympiad.

If you are a chess fan, then it’s just another reason to visit Armenia as it’s one of the most beloved games in the country, played from people’s backyards to international professional stages.

24. Armenian Genocide

One of the most tragic historical events that happened to Armenians and the Armenian nation is the Armenian Genocide . It was the first genocide of the 20th-century.

The horrific massacre happened in 1915 by the Turkish ‘Young Turks’ ruling party and as a result, 1,500,000 people lost their lives.

The Armenian nation not only lost many of its residents’ lives during this time but also a significant part of its historical homeland (Western Armenia).

This is why there are over 10,000,000 Armenians living outside of Armenia today.

Things to know before you come to Armenia

Each year on April 24th, a march takes place to the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial in Yerevan where the whole nation pays respect to the victims of the tragedy.

25. The Armenian Diaspora (and Famous Armenians)

One interesting fact about the Armenian people and its population is that there are more Armenians living outside of Armenia these days than inside of it.  Armenia has one of the biggest diaspora in the world and it is really large in countries like the USA, Russia, and France.

Today, there are over 10,000,000 diaspora and the reason dates back to the Armenian Genocide, as mentioned above.

Americans may know of some of the famous diaspora Armenians .  Some of them are the Kardashians, Cher, Andre Agassi, Michael Vartan, Dita von Teese, Alex Ohanian (Reddit founder), Joe Manganiello, System of a Down, and more.

26. Gyumri Earthquake (Spitak Earthquake)

On December 7th, 1988, another tragedy took place in the cities of Gyumri and Spitak; they were hit by a 7-magnitude earthquake.

Gyumri is the artistic city of Armenia and has always been known as the creative center of Armenia. The devastating earthquake damaged the city very badly, mostly destroying Soviet-era buildings and a part of the Old City.

Things to do in Gyumri Armenia-4

More than 40,000 people died due to the devastating consequences of the earthquake.  Even in Gyumri today, there are remnants of this earthquake as the city is still in the rebuilding process.

There are many things to do in Gyumri , and we suggest finding some small businesses to support while there as many of the owners were impacted by this disaster decades ago.

27. Miscellaneous Armenia Facts and Info

Getting around armenia.

Public transportation in Armenian is still in the development stages and new transport options are being implemented in the transport system.

Usually, there are minibusses (marshrutkas) connecting Armenian cities. These might not be the most comfortable option to get around so that’s why many travelers prefer to take taxis or to rent a car while traveling in Armenia.

What to know before you travel to Armenia

Trains are also an option, but for now, the new trains will only take you from Yerevan to Gyumri . I believe there is one going to Masis, also.  It is one of the most comfortable and fast train rides in the country. The other option is to take the old, Soviet trains.

Yerevan-Gyumri price for the new train ride – 2500 AMD ($6)

Yerevan- Gyumri price for old train ride – 1500 ($3)

28. Currency of Armenia

The Armenian national currency is called the dram (AMD) and is represented by the following symbol: ֏

The currency fluctuates a bit but is currently around $1 = 500 AMD .  It is possible to change out your money nearly anywhere in Yerevan.

You will see more currency exchanges here than perhaps anywhere else you travel.  Even shoe stores sometimes have currency exchanges!  Grocery stores almost always will have them too.

29. North Armenia Does Not Look Like South Armenia

As we mentioned before, Armenia is a diverse country in a small territory where one tunnel ride can change a bold, rocky landscape into lush, green gorges and a mountain range.

Armenia is a country of contrast and is easy to travel in… if you have a car. The more north you drive, the more you will see green mountains, lakes located in hidden spots surrounded by nature, deep caves, and many more spectacular places.

Driving towards the south of the country from Yerevan, the nature and landscape change into an arid and beige wonderland, complete with a unique ecosystem that is completely different from that of the north of the country.

You can find green landscapes present throughout the entire country but its percentage varies depending on whether you’re in the north or the south.

30. Usage of Tuff in Architecture

A unique architectural material that defines Armenian architecture is the volcanic stone ‘tuff’. Tuff has been widely used in Armenia for centuries as construction material and it’s also used in art and in some other spheres.

The capital of Armenia, Yerevan, is known as a pink city because the main material that was used to build it was pink volcanic tuff stone and it illuminates the city in a hue of the same color during certain times of the day.

35 Very Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Armenia

But tuff is not only pink, but it also has other colors as well. Black tuff was used to build the old city of Gyumri and the architecture in Gyumri stands out like no other in the country of Armenia!

31. Sidewalk Cafes in Yerevan Saturate the Streets

Yerevan has a great cafe culture , and it is one of the main attractions of the city. You can cafes everywhere, especially in the city center and it really gives the city a charming and cozy feeling.

Saryan Street , or ‘wine street’, is one of those places where little wine shops line up the sidewalk and both locals and travelers can enjoy the charming atmosphere of an evening in Yerevan.

Yerevan Cascade is a huge platform of stairs and one of the gems of the city. At the Cascades, you can also experience great cafe culture through different indoor and outdoor cafes and restaurants.

In general, Yerevan is a city of sidewalk cafes and the choice is huge!

32. Visa to Armenia

Do you need a visa for Armenia?   You might be surprised.

While the country is open to so many foreigners and for long durations of time (as an American, I have very lenient laws about being in Armenia), other nationalities are not quite as lucky.

For example, passport holders from Canada and India both need to apply for an Armenian visa (e-visas) in advance.  Rules are constantly changing, so be sure to check before your trip to see if you need a visa or not.

Click here to see the updated list at the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

33. Architecture in Armenia

In our opinion, one of the coolest things about visiting Armenia is seeing a dynamic range of architecture in the country.

As mentioned earlier in the post, pink tuff or black tuff was a commonly used building material in Armenia and the traces of that are evident, especially in Yerevan and Gyumri.

Another interesting thing about the architecture in Armenia is that you can see so many influences throughout history based on the buildings and ruins.

35 Very Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Armenia

When people think about architecture in Armenia, monasteries typically come to mind.  Or, Soviet architecture.  We could go into excessive detail about Armenian architecture and will need to do so in another post in the near future.  But, do know that the architecture here is extremely fascinating and many prolific buildings represent different eras of history and styles.

Soviet Architecture in Armenia

Many foreigners flock to Armenia to see the country’s Soviet architecture.  A lot of Soviet pieces have held up well in Armenia due to the construction with durable and tough materials and the Armenian influence on many pieces of Soviet architecture is unique compared to anywhere else in the former-USSR.

Again, we will have an entire post on this in the near future but some of the most popular Soviet architecture in Armenia masterpieces are: the Cascades, Yerevan Central Railway Station , Zvartnots Airport Tower (original), Sevan Writers’ House, Moscow Cinema, Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Gyumri Shirak Airport, Jermuk cultural center, and much, much more.

34. Armenian Food and Drink

One of the greatest things about Armenia is its food and cuisine.  Food in Armenia is light and makes use of seasonal and local ingredients better than most cuisines these days.

You will find that Armenian food will feel a bit familiar and a bit foreign, all at the same time.  There are influences from Iran, Russia, Turkey, the Middle East, and Georgia in the cuisine, but many of these ‘familiarities’ are traced back so that the food either comes from these areas or Armenia actually influenced certain dishes in the aforementioned places.

Tasty Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurants in Yerevan

Nevertheless, the Armenian food is insanely good in winter or in summer!

Vegetables and fruits in Armenia are juicy and flavorful.  You will find a heavy usage of meat but also a heavy usage of vegetables, making the country fairly ideal for vegetarians without any intent to do so.

Some very popular dishes to try in Armenia are as follows:

  • spas (a yogurt-like soup with mint and other herbs)
  • kufta (pounded meat dish with tons of flavor – two types in Armenia: ishli or Echmiadzin)
  • ghapama (rice with dried fruits and lavash cooked inside of a pumpkin or gourd – eaten in winter)
  • khash (a soup made from boiled cow or sheep parts – eaten in late autumn or winter in the mornings)
  • plov with dried fruits (rice with dried fruits)
  • dolma (grape leave stuffed with deliciousness such as rice, meat, and veggies)
  • basooc dolma (vegetarian dolma)
  • lyulya kebab (minced meat grilled with other flavors and spices)
  • khorovats (Armenian BBQ)
  • gata (a sweet pastry that is highly addictive due to its deliciousness)
  • harissa (a porridge with pulled meat served with butter… this is not like North African harissa!)
  • lahmajo (an eastern style pizza – often referred to as ‘Turkish pizza’ in western Europe)
  • summer salad (a garden salad made with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and herbs)
  • zhingyalov hats (a bread stuffed with many green herbs originating from Artsakh and Syunik region)
  • basturma (dried and spiced meat)
  • bakhlava (common across many places in this region)

Obviously, with all of these prepared items above come some other specific items like Armenian cheese , condiments, pickled veggies, and more.  Armenian food truly is the best and there is something to satisfy everyone.

Ingredients in Armenian Cuisine

While the above detailed specific dishes, we thought it would be necessary to list some common ingredients you’ll find in Armenia.

Yes, many are vegetables and you can easily find vegetarian food in Yerevan , but you do need to ask to double-check no meat or animal products were used when ordering if you’re vegan or vegetarian (a lot of food here is ‘accidentally’ vegan or vegetarian).

The ingredients listed are ones that you will see often across several dishes.

Here are some popular ingredients in Armenian cuisine:

  • Cilantro (coriander)
  • Pomegranate
  • Salt (Armenians use a lot of salt!)
  • Lavash (Armenian bread)

35. Armenian Coffee

Armenians love their coffee and you will likely be served it a couple of times a day if you’re hanging around a local.  Armenian coffee is similar to coffee you’ll find in other countries in the region and even into the Balkans (often referred to as Turkish coffee… but you will never refer to it that way here).

You can buy bags of freshly grounded coffee at all grocery stores and several shops in the city.  You will need a jazzve (way to cook the coffee on a stovetop) and a small cup to serve it into.

Are you into specialty coffee?  Don’t worry – Yerevan has third-wave coffee shops too!

Honestly, it was the Duduk recording that led me to Google Armenia. The sound is very mystical, “bringing me to the mountain forest of Caucasus”. I wish to visit this interesting and historical country one day. By the way, I am from bali, Indonesia.

2. The amazing weather in Armenia

In Armenia, you can experience all four seasons, which makes this a perfect place to travel. Winter, spring, summer, and autumn all show off their best characteristics. Although every season has its advantages and disadvantages… You won’t find any complaints about it here.

Winters in Armenia are never extremely cold. This is the season when the country is covered with pure snow. Temperatures range from 2 to -10°C.

In spring, when the snow melts, green areas pop up all around Armenia. You can find flowers and blossomed trees everywhere. Expect temperatures to warm up to 10 to 15°C.

Summers aren’t so hot in Armenia, but they are quite dry. Some regions are even very cool. Therefore, in some regions, people complain of hot weather and go on a vacation in the Lake Sevan (we’ll learn more about this lake later). In the summer, you can expect temperatures of 25-30°C.

When autumn comes the weather gradually becomes cooler. You may see leaves of thousands of colors: Autumn is magic in Armenia… especially when it’s not raining. You can expect temperatures of 10 to 15°C.

3. The beautiful scenery and landscape in Armenia

The Armenian landscape is breathtaking, to say the least. In this small land, you will experience highlands and lowlands, deep gorges and high mountains, fields and valleys, forests, raw nature, and even more.

Armenia is famous for its rich nature, thick forests where you can breathe the freshest and cleanest air far away from large urban cities. In these places, you can break away from reality and enjoy your rest at the heart of Mother Nature.

The beautiful natural landscape in Armenia

The view of Mount Ararat is one of the favorites for Armenians. Although the mountain is no longer in the territory of the country, it is considered to be one of the symbols of Armenia. In clear weather, Ararat is seen from Yerevan and other regions around it.

4. The epic mountains in Armenia

Armenia is known as a mountainous country. If you’re fond of hiking trails then the Armenian mountains are a perfect place for you. You can find different levels of difficulty for hiking.

One of the most famous mountains in Armenia is Mount Aragats. It’s also the highest peak in Armenia at 4,090 meters. This famous mountain is popular for its four summits. They say that each summit is a unique challenge for hikers.

Armenia's symbolic mountains, Mount Ararat

There are many tour agencies in Armenia that offer hiking tours to Aragats and many other mountains as well. If you happen to arrive at the peak of Mount Aragats, take a deep breath and try to see the symbolic mountain that is Ararat.

5. Discover Armenia’s capital of Yerevan

Have you ever heard about the Armenian rosy capital? Yerevan is the largest city in Armenia. It’s known for its pink color because the majority of the buildings are built with Armenian tufa stone. As a result, the city itself looks rosy. In Armenia, the majority of industries are centralized in Yerevan. All the essential educational institutions are also located here.

There are many attractive buildings and places to discover in Yerevan, including the Republic Square with its unique and influential architecture, the Opera house, Cascade, various parks, etc.

The pink tuff stones that make up Republic Square in Yerevan. The beautiful architecture of Armenia

In my opinion, you’ll enjoy Cascade most of all. This is a huge stairway that was built on limestone. There are interesting sculptures and various figures at every level of this staircase. You have two ways to arrive at the top, either walk upstairs or take an escalator. In any case, in the end, the breathtaking view of the city awaits you, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot Mount Ararat.

6. Armenia’s rich history

This small country has a long history that dates back centuries. They say the country originated in 3500 BC. Since then the Armenian land housed several dynasties, including the Artashisian dynasty (the first Armenian kingdom), the Arshakunian dynasty, the Bagratunian dynasty, and the Rubinian dynasty.

Karahunj, the Armenian Stonehenge which dates back to centuries ago. Armenia's rich history

In 1918, the First Republic of Armenia was founded and it lasted for two years. From 1922 up to 1991 Armenia was a member of the Soviet Union. Currently, Armenia is an independent country that celebrates its independence day every year on September 21st.

7. Armenia’s amazing culture

Armenia is a very culturally rich country with its architectural monuments, customs, and traditions. The official language and religion are inseparable parts of the national culture.

Haghartsin Monastery near Dilijan

The Armenian language is beautiful yet complex, especially for foreigners. There are some sounds that are very difficult to pronounce. As for the religion, Armenia is the first country that adopted Christianity as a state religion, in 301. It’s no surprise then, that most attractions in Armenia are its beautiful churches .

8. Armenia’s impressive monuments

There are a ton of monuments in Armenia, and each one is more impressive than the last. One of the most popular monuments is Mother Armenia. This monument is situated in a park, in the capital city of Yerevan. The park is known as Victory Park, but natives call it Monument Park because of the Mother Armenia monument. This huge statue looks towards the city and expresses the power, willingness, and wisdom of the Armenian nation.

Other famous monuments are the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and Nor Arabkir Memorial Complex Yerevan.

9. Armenia’s famous sculptures

Some people think that memorials are the same as sculptures. I agree that both are somehow confusing but I differentiate them: monuments are memorial complexes, while sculptures are statues of famous people.

Armenia is full of sculptures. You may see them in every corner of the capital, as well as in many other cities and even on the highways. If you walk around the capital Yerevan, you will see many statues of Armenian as well as foreign famous writers, artists, scientists, actors, singers, etc.

The statue of Martiros Saryan, in the Park bearing his name in Yerevan

You may be surprised about the presence of statues on highways, but that’s how they are in Armenia! The statue of Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan is located near the city of Ijevan, right on the highway.

10. The amazing food and cuisine in Armenia

Armenian cuisine is the most delicious. Here you may find tasty dishes made of fresh vegetables, meat, and other ingredients. Armenians like to eat tastily. Maybe this is the reason for having such a unique and delicious cuisine that includes dishes like Barbeque, Dolma, Harissa, Spas, Ghapama, etc. If you visit Armenia, make sure you taste these dishes.

It’s also good to know that there is a difference between Eastern and Western Armenian cuisines. Each of them has their own unique meals. For example, the lamb is replaced with pork and beef, the wine is bested by vodka and cognac. The Eastern Armenian cuisine is famous for Kiev, borscht, and okroshka. As for Western Armenian cuisine, the most common dishes are mante, dolma, gata, baklava, choereg, Armenian lula kebab, cheese borek, etc. You can find both types of Armenian cuisine in Armenia.

11. The pure water in Armenia

Water is a special element in Armenia. It’s fresh, clean, and tasty. Everybody wonders what makes this water fresher and better than anywhere else. The answer is obvious. The water in Armenia comes from the highest mountains, making it natural and fresh.

There is an interesting tradition in Armenia about building water fountains. It is the norm to build fountains and name them after dead people. They say these people won’t be forgotten if the water flows through the fountain.

The Shaki waterfalls and the pure Armenian water that flows there

Also, one of the fun things is that you can find freshwater fountains everywhere in Yerevan and in Armenia, called Pulpulaks. This means you have a chance to get free freshwater. So be sure to be as eco-friendly as possible and bring along your reusable water bottle so you can fill it up everywhere!

12. The famous Armenian cognac

Armenian cognac (brandy) is world-renown. There are many brandy making factories that produce Armenian brandy that is enjoyed not only in the country but it’s also exported to other countries.

They say that if the word Armenia is seen on a bottle of brandy, then it is naturally perfect! Be sure to try a bottle yourself when you are visiting. You can even tour the famous Ararat brandy factory to see how this liquid gold is made.

13. Wine is an Armenian specialty

Besides cognac, Armenian wines are also very popular. Since ancient times, Armenian people have cultivated grapes and made various types of wines. A few years ago, the oldest winery in the world “Areni” was discovered in Armenia. You can visit the site while you are traveling in Armenia, either as a day trip or on your journey to Noravank or Goris.

There are various types of Armenian wines made of different sorts of grapes. The most popular wines are produced by brands like Armenian Wine, Areni, Vernashen, Ijevan, etc. A few years ago, the oldest winery in the world “Areni-1” was discovered in Armenia.

14. The amazing lavash bread

Do you know that Armenians adore bread? Armenians never sit around the table to eat something without bread. If different nations have such sayings as “to have breakfast, lunch, dinner”, Armenians say “let’s eat bread”.

Lavash is a type of flatbread that is made in a tonir which is an underground oven. You can use Armenian Lavash bread to make tasty sandwiches wrapping greens, veggies, and cheese inside.

It is possible to buy Armenian lavash in any kind of food store and supermarket. However, there are also some special bakeries where they make and sell Armenian lavash on the spot. These are the best places to find freshly baked bread.

15. Delicious sweets to taste in Armenia

Armenian sweets are very sweet. Here you can eat the tastiest fruits such as apricots, pomegranates, figs, grapes, apples, and more. The best seasons to try these fresh fruits are summer and autumn. At the beginning of the summer, the best things to eat are berries: strawberries, blueberries, mulberries, raspberries, etc. Then, the Armenian symbolic apricot comes later in the summer, and the rest of the fruits follow after that. The best time to taste the sweetest Armenian grapes is autumn. This is the time of harvest.

Armenians also make very tasty dried fruits. When no fresh fruits are available, you can taste the most delicious dried fruits. Armenian dry many kinds of fruits under the natural sunlight, giving them an even more delicious flavor.

There are also chocolate companies in Armenia, that produce very tasty chocolate. All of these companies use only high-quality products and natural ingredients, including cocoa and dairy products, nuts and different fillings. You may even eat chocolate that has dried fruits inside.

16. The beautiful Lake Sevan

Have you ever heard about the Armenian sea? Well, it’s actually Lake Sevan! To Armenians, it’s considered to be the Armenian sea.

17. Armenia’s markets

You can find thousands of local markets in Armenia. The most interesting ones are those where people sell homemade food, fruits, and vegetables that they have cultivated, homemade beverages (wine, vodka, juice, etc.).

There is an open-air souvenir market in Yerevan called “Vernissage”. At this market, you may find various souvenirs with national symbols, silver jewelry, Armenian rugs, and more. If you come to Armenia and want to take presents back to your relatives, then surely visit Vernissage.

18. Armenia is budget-friendly

Armenia is a budget-friendly country. It’s a great choice for people who want to travel on a budget. Want to know how? This country offers a wide choice of accommodations for people. Here, you’ll find both 5-star hotels and ordinary guest houses. If you travel on a budget, you can stay in guesthouses that will cost up to $15.00 USD daily.

As for food, you can find luxury restaurants, and cafes, as well as simple places right on the road where you can eat a shawarma or something similar. The cost of a cup of coffee is up to $0.50, and a shawarma is about $2.00.

19. The impressive Wings of Tatev

The longest reversible aerial tramway in the world is actually in Armenia. It’s called the Wings of Tatev. It’s a 5.7 km long cableway that connects the village of Halidzor with the 9th century monastery of Tatev .

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

Starting from the Halidzor village, you should be ready to enjoy the breathtaking view of the wild nature, forests, and gorges from the ropeway. Arriving at the destination, you’ll see the 9th century monastery of Tatev with its unique architecture.

20. Celebrate during one of Armenia’s famous festivals

Armenians love celebrations! Here you can experience various events and festivals. I recommend taking part in “Vardavar”, the Armenian celebration when people drench each other with water.

Vardava is celebrated in summer and is a perfect solution for the sweltering heat. It’s the celebration of the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. However, they say that the tradition of celebrating Vardavar comes from pagan times. It was devoted to one of the goddesses, Astghik. She was the goddess of water, love, beauty, and fertility. Vardavar doesn’t have a fixed date, but is usually celebrated 98 days after Easter (which is a whole other festival).

Other interesting festivals are devoted to Armenian wines (Wine Days, Areni Wine Festival, etc.), dishes (Dolma festival, Barbeque festival, etc). These festivals are accompanied by national songs and dances. In case you are interested in such events, you may search the Armenian festival calendar on the internet.

10 Reasons To Visit Armenia In 2021

When we decided to travel to Armenia, we honestly didn’t know what to expect. As a fan of big cities, I was especially curious about Yerevan, Armenia’s capital and largest city. Would Yerevan be similar to Tbilisi, the capital of the nearby Georgia, which is a nice and vibrant city… Or would it be a no name dusty city like some third tier city in the southern Caucus? Sure, we wanted to revisit Georgia and it’s beautiful capital of Tbilisi, but a part of me wanted to visit somewhere new and interesting. So, Armenia it was, We bought tickets, got on a plane and landed at Yerevan’s airport. After hailing a cab, we arrived at the center of Yerevan. It was late evening, so we wouldn’t get a good feel of the city, but immediately I realized that we had arrived somewhere special. In the following ten days, we explored a good chunk of the country, visiting several recommended cities, and were overwhelmed by the country’s gorgeous landscapes, super friendly hospitality and delicious food. We enjoyed Armenia so much that we ended up extending our trip, something that we’ve never done before on any other trip. And when it was finally time to leave, we dreaded going to the airport and getting on the plane back to Ukraine.

INTRODUCTION

Armenia is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited countries. It’s located in the southern Caucasus bordering Georgia to the north, Turkey to the west, Azerbaijan to the east and Iran to the south. Its official population is around 3M, which is surprisingly about the same as the city of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, although it feels a lot larger than that. And Armenian people are very proud of their country’s unique history and heritage. On more than one occasion, we had random people approach us and tell us about the country’s history and how Armenia came to be. And, with that said, let’s talk about the 7 reasons why you should visit Armenia in 2021 and beyond.

THE CLEAN AND ORGANIZED CITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE

The first thing I realized when we arrived in Yerevan is just how clean and organized the city is. The sidewalks were wide, spacious and free of cars, which isn’t something you can say for just about any eastern European city big or small, especially Kiev, where I’m currently living. The city seemed to be built for walking, exploring and enjoying some more. There are lots of trees, and the city just feels very green, and while I was exploring it, if I had gotten a dime every time I said “greenery” or “green,” I would’ve been a very rich man. Having gotten used to Eastern European cities that are made for cars instead of pedestrians, Yerevan was a truly welcome surprise. But it wasn’t just Yerevan that was so clean and organized, so were the other cities that we visited on our trip including Gyumri, Dilijan, and even the villages that we passed on our travels. The roads, for the most part, were excellent, something that we didn’t expect from a seemingly “third world country,” which made traveling and exploring this country all the more interesting and worthwhile.

Now we’re getting to the people. You knew this would be on the list somewhere. Now, this is an interesting one because honestly I’ve never met friendlier people than Armenians, at least not here in Europe, and certainly not here in eastern europe where I’m based at the moment. We also didn’t need to wait too long to experience this [majestic] Armenian hospitality. On our first day in Yerevan, just after we arrived at the center from the airport, we couldn’t find the hotel room. We came to the hotel’s address, but there was no address in sight. Right away, a man who was walking, immediately approached us and asked if we needed help. He then quickly proceeded to guide us to the hotel, which ended up behind the main building on the street. But that wasn’t the only experience. We were visiting a famous outdoor market, and then began thinking about our next destination. So we pulled up our phones and began wondering how to get there. A man who was standing nearby asked us if we needed help finding anything. Armenians are genuinely friendly and welcoming of foreigners. Not once did we feel that we were not welcome in any place or setting, even given the fact that we were speaking Russian everywhere, which unfortunately is not the case in many other post-Soviet Union countries.

We can’t talk about Armenia, and not once mention the food. And, as expected, the food is absolutely delicious. Look, I’m a food buff, I love to eat. And I love to eat great food. Unfortunately, here in Ukraine, the food is pretty bland — there are only so many ways you can eat your borsch, pelmeni or something else. On the other hand in Armenia, the food is very diverse. First, you have your kebabs, but not just any kebabs, we actually had different kebabs as well. The kebabs were better than any kebab I’ve had before. But when it came to the “regular” food, Armenia continued to pleasantly surprise, too. The most interesting thing is the variety of food that you experience. In every single restaurant we went to, we enjoyed completely different types of food. And, so, on our quest to try different food every time we went to a different restaurant, we easily succeeded. And we definitely weren’t disappointed.

THE SAFETY AND SECURITY

Whenever I visit a new country, my first instinct is to figure out how safe and predictable it is. That’s probably because I grew up in a big city with its fair share of crime (New York). I knew from experience that the Caucasus region is fairly safe and predictable, so if you’re not looking for any trouble, trouble won’t be coming from me, sort of like Eastern Europe. But, what I didn’t know is that Armenia is super safe, in fact one of the safest countries I’ve ever visited, at least outside Asia. Everyone that we met told us that in Armenia you can walk alone at 3am in the morning and nothing will happen to you. That’s certainly not something you can do in New York city and even in a relatively safe country like Ukraine, walking around alone at night isn’t a bulletproof strategy. Armenia indeed felt very safe, as we immediately got the feeling that everyone kinda keeps to themselves, and so if you’re not looking for trouble, trouble won’t come to you.

THE WEATHER

I hate cold weather, so it was nice to go to a country with beautiful sunny and hot weather. Every single day was sunny, maybe except one, but even when the temperatures soared close to 30C, it never felt unbearable because of the low humidity.

THE RELAXED “SOUTHERN” FEEL

The weather coupled with the One thing that we immediately felt upon arriving in Yerevan the day we landed was this “relaxed southern” feel. This is a little hard to put into words, but the wide streets filled with outdoor bars and restaurants immediately reminded me of a country like Mexico, Colombia or Brazil, with a mix of Miami Beach.

Coming from Kiev, Ukraine, I found the prices for food and accommodation to be more or less similar, but if you’re someone coming from Western Europe or North America, you will find almost everything very affordable.

Ultimately, the way I described Armenia to my friends and family is that you’re essentially visiting an exotic country that is distinctly different from Europe, America and even Eastern Europe, but yet people speak Russian and remind me of my eastern European friends and relatives, and speak excellent Russian to boot. That is something you won’t be able to do, say, in a country like Iran—an exotic country in all senses of the word.

15 Best Places to Visit in Armenia

Armenia is becoming an increasingly popular tourist attraction, with the small but charming nation boasting a rich history.

Armenia, which was the first country to declare Christianity as its national religion, boasts some of Europe’s most stunning views, with the peak of Mount Ararat dominating the country’s skyline. The mountain is Armenia’s national symbol despite its peak lying just over the Turkish border and Ararat is considered holy by locals due to its mention in The Bible – it is where Noah’s Ark landed.

Armenia is home to countless beautiful monasteries and they are often found in areas of truly outstanding natural beauty. Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the whole of Europe as the nation continues to embrace tourism. Let’s have a look at the best places to visit in Armenia !

Yerevan

By far the largest city in Armenia, the capital Yerevan is a great place to start for anyone wishing to explore Armenia. The city is home to the grand Republic Square, while climbing the Cascade to see the city’s monument to Soviet victory in the Second World War is a must.

Yerevan is a deeply historic city and visiting the Armenian Genocide Memorial is a must to learn more about the nation’s troubled past. Vernissage market is worth visiting too – it is open at the weekend – while a walk through the Hrazdan gorge is also highly recommended.

Much of what Armenia has to offer can be explored during day trips from Yerevan, which is known as the City of Cafes.

Yerevan is also home to Blue Mosque, which is the only mosque in the whole of the country, as well as Levon’s Amazing Underground World, which is one of Europe’s most unusual attractions.

2. Shikahogh State Reserve

Shikahogh State Reserve

The second largest forest reserve in Armenia, Shikahogh State Reserve is so unspoiled that large parts of it remains unexplored to this day.

The forest is believed to be home to animals including leopards, bears, wild goats and vipers and it is also thought that Shikahogh State Reserve has about 1,100 species of plants, although its fauna has not yet been fully explored. The reserve was threatened by a planned highway in 2005, but environments successfully lobbied for the forest’s future to be protected.

The reserve also has a number of very beautiful waterfalls to enjoy.

3. Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan, found in the heart of Armenia, is the country’s largest lake and a beautiful place to visit during a break in the country. The lake is surrounded by some stunning monasteries – the most impressive of them being arguably the Sevanavank Monastery – providing a glorious scenic backdrop to a relaxing trip.

Windsurfing is among the recreation activities available at the lake, which also has a wide choice of excellent seafood restaurants along its shore.

Lake Sevan has a number of popular beaches and, as the country has no coastline, this is the best place in Armenia to sunbathe, with Sevan Bay and its surrounding mountains providing spectacular scenery.

4. Dilijan National Park

Dilijan National Park

Armenia has four national parks and Dilijan national park may be the most beautiful of the lovely quartet. The park, which was only established in 2002, is famous for its medicinal mineral water springs, as well as its natural monuments.

Many of Armenia’s more important cultural locations can be found within the grounds of the park, such as Haghartsin Monastery, Goshavank Monastery  and Jukhtak Vank, as well as Matosavank Monastery and the Akhnabat church.

The Aghestev and Getik river basins are also both within the boundaries of Dilijan national park.

5. Mount Aragats

Mount Aragats

Mount Aragats is one of Armenia’s most stunning natural sights, with the dormant volcano located in the north of the country. It is Armenia’s highest peak and there is a lot of rock art to be enjoyed around its base, with paintings of animals and human-like figures dating back hundreds of years.

Snow covers the peak almost all year-round but Mount Aragats can be climbed, with July, August and September the best times of the year to attempt the hike.

The southernmost of the four peaks is the easiest to climb, while the northern peak, at around 4,000 metres, is the most challenging.

6. Lake Arpi

Lake Arpi

While Lake Sevan can be extremely crowded during the peak tourist season, Lake Arpi has a much more relaxed feel.

Used for irrigation and hydropower production, Lake Arpi is also the source of the Akhurian River. In 2009 a new park was established around the lake to protect the natural environment, with around 100 species of birds known to live in the area. Lake Arpi also hosts rich flora and fauna and is a Ramsar Convention protected site.

Lake Arpi has one the largest colonies of Armenian Gull and its recreation activities include camping and walking tours.

7. Noravank

Noravank

Monasteries are one of Armenia’s defining characteristics and the example at Noravank is one of the most beautiful in the whole country. Sheer brick-red cliffs shield the monastery, which was built in the 13th century.

Noravank is famous for its Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) church, while the story goes that the monastery was saved by God himself when Armenia was conquered by the Mongols hundreds of years ago.

If you only choose to go to one monastery during a trip to Armenia, Noravank would be an extremely good selection – thousands of people visit every year.

Gyumri

The second largest city in Armenia, Gyumri is well worth a visit for anyone heading to the country for the first time. Perhaps the best place from which to enjoy the sights of Gyumri is from the Black Fortress on the hill that overlooks the city, while the massive Mother Armenia statue can also be found nearby.

Many of the most important cultural institutions of Armenia are in Gyumri, such as the Dzitoghtsyan Museum of Social Life and National Architecture of Gyumri, as well as the Aslamazyan Sisters House-Museum and the Sergey Merkurov House-Museum.

The Kumayri Historic District is Gyumri’s oldest area, with a thousand ancient buildings found here.

9. Vanadzor

Vanadzor

Armenia’s third major city is Vanadzor, which is located in the north of the country. Vanadzor is an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful Lori region, which is certainly one of the best places to visit in Armenia.

The Vanadzor Botanical Garden is one of the finest tourist attractions in the city, while visitors should also consider checking out the Vanadzor fine art museum. The many mineral springs of the Lori region mean there are a wide range of terrific spas to enjoy in and around Vanadzor.

Although Vanadzor is primarily an industrial city, it also houses many theatres, such as the Bohem Chamber Theatre of Vanadzor and the Vanadzor Puppet Theatre.

10. Amberd Fortress

Amberd Fortress

Dating back to the seventh century, Amberd Fortress is one of the most stunning places to visit in Armenia. Formerly among the Armenian Kingdom’s primary military-defensive points, the fortress can be reached in about an hour from the capital city Yerevan.

However, snowfall can make the fortress inaccessible during the winter months, with the weather usually improving by late May. The view from the top of the fortress is truly breathtaking, while the building itself is also stunning.

Amberd Fortress is a short trip from the village of Byurakan, home of the Byurakan Observatory.

11. Tsaghkadzor

Tsaghkadzor

Armenia’s mountainous scenery makes it ideal for winter sports and the country’s best ski resort can be found at Tsaghkadzor in the heart of the country. Ski lifts are paid for by the ride and are among the most affordable in Europe.

Tsaghkadzor boasts some of the finest hotels in the country, while the resort also has one of the nation’s biggest entertainment centers in the form of the Senator Royale casino complex.

Tsaghkadzor also has the Kecharis Monastery, which is one of Armenia’s most important religious complexes, dating back to the start of the 11th century.

12. Upper Azat Valley

Upper Azat Valley

The Upper Azat Valley is one of Armenia’s World Heritage Sites, partly due to the incredible Geghard Monastery for which the region is most famous. The main chapel was built 800 years ago but the history of the monastery goes all the way back to the fourth century, when it was founded by Gregory the Illuminator.

According to legend, the Geghard Monastery once housed one of the spears that was used to crucify Jesus Christ, brought to Armenia by Apostle Thaddeus, and as such it is one of Armenia’s most important religious sites.

The Upper Azat Valley is also home to the St Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) chapel, which is partially carved out of the rock.

13. Karahunj Observatory

Karahunj Observatory

Often referred to internationally as Armenia’s version of Britain’s Stonehenge, Karahunj is one of the most fascinating places to visit during a break in Armenia.

Located close to the city of Sisian in the Syunik province, Karahunj is made up of well over 200 massive stone tombs, while the main area sees 40 stones standing in a circular formation, supposedly built in honour of the Armenian main God, Ari, named after the Sun.

A small museum in Sisian is dedicated to findings that have been made at Karahunj, which is claimed to be the oldest observatory of its kind in the world.

14. Khor Virap

Khor Virap

Views of Mount Ararat can be enjoyed from all over Armenia, but perhaps the best scenery of the mountain can be found from the Khor Virap monastery, which is definitely also worth visiting in its own right.

This location is one of the most important historic sites in Armenia’s history as it was where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 14 years before he cured King Trdat III of his disease. The King then converted to Christianity, paving the way for Armenia’s religious future.

As such, Khor Virap is a popular spot for Armenian weddings today, while the underground chamber in which Gregory the Illuminator was held can be visited during a trip to Khor Virap, which is among Armenia’s most visited pilgrimage sites as a result.

Dvin

Our final selection for the best places to visit in Armenia is Dvin, one of the country’s oldest cities – in fact, it was the capital of Armenia in medieval times. A sixth century BC fortress was also once situated in Dvin, according to Unesco, while incredible artefacts are regularly found in this part of Armenia.

More modern sights can also be enjoyed in the city, such as the St. Harutyun Church in Dvin, which was built in 2000.

Dvin once housed the Cathedral of St. Grigor, but all that remains of the building today is the stone foundations that have been uncovered by archeologists.

A List of the Top Reasons you should visit Armenia

Location: Yerevan, Armenia

I just returned from a week in Armenia and it was one of my favorite trips I have taken. Have you ever been somewhere that you had no idea what to expect? Like the plane door opens and you walk out and it’s all a surprise? That is how I went into this trip. It’s a hard place to explain because I have never been anywhere like it. If Russia and India had a baby, it would look like Armenia. And it’s a really cute baby. Here is a list of why Armenia should be added to your bucket list:

Table of Contents

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

Armenians are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people you will meet. Most people spoke English, but those who didn’t had Google Translate ready on their phone- eager to understand and never annoyed. The woman who cooked our meals was like a grandmother to me. She didn’t speak English, but would make sure our bellies were always full and we had everything we needed. We felt like family by the time we left.

The landscape is incredible

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

We flew into Yerevan and drove an hour north into the mountains. When I ever saw Mt. Ararat for the first time, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. It had to be clouds or I was just really sleep deprived. But it’s real. No picture will do it justice. It was like staring at a painting.

Wildlife and Ecotourism

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

Armenia is becoming a leader in Ecotourism. We stayed at the Eco Lodge in the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge. It also happens to be a bear sanctuary, which was the real reason for our visit. We took a 4 by 4 out into the mountains where we then hiked to a waterfall. This protected land is home to rare wildlife species such as Armenian Mouflon, Syrian Brown bears, Bezoar goats, Caucasian Leopards, and Caucasian Lynx.

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

Although we didn’t see any, we came across fresh wolf tracks and scat. It is a bird watching hot spot and there were endangered bearded vultures circling over head. Although we didn’t partake, the eco-center also does horseback riding and road bike tours. You can feel good about spending your money here as it all goes back to protecting the nature reserve.

The culture

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

This country has been through so much and as hard as it is to swallow, I would recommend visiting the Armenian Genocide Museum. It was harrowing but important to learn about and pay our respects at the eternal flame. On a lighter note, we had dinner at the Lusik Aguletsi’s house-museum. It is the perfect place to have a traditional Armenian meal and learn about the culture. It doubles as a museum and they are happy to bring you on a tour to show you all of the things Lusik Aguletsi collected to preserve their heritage when it was all but erased from the history books. After our tour, we ate in the courtyard and when it became chilly, they even brought out blankets for us.

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

I am not an adventurous eater and really didn’t know what the food would be like. What blew me away was how much variety there was. The Armenian tradition is to share a family meal. Each time we sat down to eat there were several dishes and I would laugh because my kids are lucky if they have one option (and it’s usually pasta). There were always two varieties of bread, different cheeses, herbs and vegetables. The food was colorful, fresh and healthy.

It’s affordable

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

It’s true, the flights are pricey because there is no direct route. I flew through Paris and Moscow to get there. But once you arrive, the food and lodging is really inexpensive. One US dollar is equal to 480 Armenian Drams. We took a taxi across town and it cost us $1. You can find nice lodging for $30 a night.

Armenia is a really safe place. I never felt nervous to be walking around alone or that I was ever in any danger. We didn’t even lock our room while we were gone for the day. They were respectful of us as well as our belongings.

I loved our time in Armenia and can’t wait to go back. It was one of the most unsoiled, beautiful places I have ever been to. Go now before this hidden gem is discovered!

Armenians also warmly welcome foreigners and want to do everything to make them feel comfortable in their homeland. Many tourists who have visited various countries, point out that nowhere else have they seen such hospitality as in Armenia. Do not be surprised if during your travel in Armenia complete strangers invite you to their home and treat you to a variety of different goodies. And it is very likely that at the end of your journey you will make good Armenian friends who will be waiting for your return to their beloved homeland.

10 Reasons To Visit Armenia: There’s Something For Everyone 2023

Armenia probably isn’t on the top of your bucket list, but it probably should be. No matter what kind of traveler you are, you’re sure to find something about Armenia to love: there’s tasty food, amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites, world-renowned brandy, unspoiled nature and better yet, you won’t have to share your experience with a bunch of other tourists around (at least not yet). Here’s why you should visit Armenia.

10 Reasons To Visit Armenia

Unesco sites.

Armenia was once the cornerstone of historical developments; therefore, it’s no surprise that you’ll find quite a few UNESCO World Heritage sites. If you’re planning a trip to Armenia, make sure you add at least a few of these sites to your list of places to visit.

Amazing Hiking and Nature

If you enjoy the outdoors, Armenia has a lot to offer including trekking, hiking and paragliding. However, if you visit Armenia in the winter, you can still make use of the great outdoors by skiing at Tsaghkadzor, which is on par with well-known ski resorts in Europe.

You can also take the longest cable car in the world for a unique experience. The cable car is 3.6 miles long and rises 1,050 feet above the River Vorotan, so it is not for the faint-hearted.

If you prefer to stick to modest hiking trails, there are plenty to choose from with breathtaking views.  Hike Armenia  is a helpful resource for all of your trail maps through their handy app.

The stunning Lake Sevan, often referred to by the locals as “The Armenian Sea,” is impossible to miss. You can sit on the bank and feel as if the water’s surface and the sky are going to merge.

This lake, which has fresh and mild waters and is the biggest and often regarded as the most spectacular lake in the Caucasus, is surrounded by silent mountains that seem to shield it from the outer world.

Mount Ararat

Ararat is a Biblical mountain that was referenced in the Bible during the Great Flood, according to historical records and is thought to be the resting place of Noah’s Ark. Armenian legends claim that Noah stopped and settled with his family in the valley at the base of the mountain. The view alone is breathtaking and will leave a lasting impression.

You can drive out of the capital to the Monastery of Khor Virap for the best views of this picturesque mountain. Alternatively, you can climb to the top of the Yerevan Cascade.

Impressive Monuments

Armenia is home to a large number of monuments, many of which are incredibly stunning. The Mother Armenia monument is one of the most well-known. It is located in a park in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan.

Ararat Brandy

While Armenian brandy is made in a large number of distilleries and exported to other countries in addition to being consumed locally, it’s difficult to find one that tops Ararat brandy. Ararat uses only local Armenian oak to age the brandy, but the real secret is the water and soil of Armenia.

It is believed that this Armenian brandy is naturally perfect, so you definitely can’t miss out on trying a bottle. To learn how this liquid gold is created, you can even  take a tour of the renowned Ararat brandy factory  with a tasting at the end—which I highly recommend.

Armenian Wine

Armenia isn’t only known for its brandy; it has some popular and delicious wines too. Armenians have grown grapes and produced a variety of wines for centuries. In fact, the world’s oldest known winery, Areni, was discovered in an Armenian cave. There’s an  operating winery known by the same name .

In Armenia, water is a special kind of element. It’s delicious, clean and fresh. Everyone is curious as to why this water is fresher and better than any other water in the world. Well, this is because Armenian water comes from some of the highest mountains.

Armenia also has a fascinating tradition surrounding water fountains—they build and name these fountains after the dead. They believe that if water flows through the fountain the people won’t be forgotten.

Delicious Fruit

If you have a sweet tooth, Armenia will be a paradise for you. You’ll find amazing fruit, including pomegranates, apricots, figs, apples, grapes and more. If you’re visiting at the start of summer, berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mulberries, etc. are a must-have. However, if you’re a fan of the sweetest and juiciest grapes, make sure you visit in autumn.

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

Armenian Bread

Armenians love their bread. You’ll rarely find an Armenian family gathering around the table without bread. Whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner, you have to have bread on your plate!

A tonir, an underground oven, is used to make a particular kind of flatbread called lavash. Many Armenian people use lavash bread to make mouthwatering sandwiches with cheese, lettuce and other fillings. Lavash also accompanies khash, the traditional Armenian bone broth that’s made and eaten on cold days to get warm down to the bone—often enjoyed with a shot (or a few) of vodka. Khash is also touted as a hangover cure … but perhaps it’s just the hair of the dog.

Fortunately, you can buy lavash in almost any supermarket or grocery store, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding it. However, there are also bakeries where lavash is baked fresh.

10 Best Places to Visit in Armenia

' src=

Armenia is an increasingly popular destination; in recent years, tourist numbers have shot up, and it’s very easy to see why. Blessed with dramatic, mountainous landscapes populated with deep gorges, sparkling lakes, and gushing rivers, the scenery is stunning wherever you go. As such, there is loads of great hiking to be had.

Due to its strategic location in the Caucasus, everyone from the Romans and Byzantines to Persians and Soviets have passed through the region. Throughout all this turmoil, Armenia impressively and resolutely retained its rich language, culture, and heritage.

As it was the first nation to embrace Christianity, there is a myriad of incredible old monasteries, churches, and chapels to explore, and these are invariably located in the most scenic settings imaginable. Whether you have a penchant for learning about the past or are keen to see some remote and wild wonderlands, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this list of best places to visit in Armenia.

10. Dilijan National Park

Dilijan National Park

Home to some gorgeous scenery, Dilijan National Park in the northeast of the country will delight nature lovers and outdoor aficionados alike. The peaceful, rolling hills and mountain ranges that make up most of the national park’s territory are covered in endless forest, with twinkling streams and babbling brooks coursing through the undergrowth.

Alongside the diverse array of fauna and flora are some beautiful lakes for you to check out, as well as some wonderful old monasteries that date back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Of these, Hagharstin, Goshavank, and Matosvavank are particularly worth visiting. As a myriad of paths and trails snake through the magnificent scenery, Dilijan National Park is a lovely place to go hiking.

Goris

Lying on the banks of the Vararak River in a scenic valley hemmed in by mountains, Goris in the southeast of the country is a lovely place to visit. There are many fascinating historical and cultural landmarks for you to check out, alongside its amazing landscapes. The planned city’s tree-lined streets are perfect for ambling peacefully along.

As you stroll around, you’ll come across lots of charming old stone houses, a fantastic archaeological museum and art gallery, as well as a beautiful basilica that dates back to the fourth century.

Goris is a pleasant and peaceful town in which to spend a couple of days. The surrounding mountains and countryside are home to lots of enticing trails and paths, with Tatev Monastery and the fascinating Old Khndzoresk Cave Village both nearby.

8. Debed Canyon

Debed Canyon

Home to an astonishing array of little villages and towns, which each boast their own unique look, feel, and identity, traveling through the Debed Canyon is a magical experience. Linking Armenia to Georgia, the canyon weaves through some breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, with charming little villages dotted here and there.

Each village has a wealth of fascinating historic sights for you to check out, with churches, chapels, and forts all on display. Two of the main must-see attractions are the fabulous monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin which lie along the route.

With lots of great hiking trails snaking their way from the small villages into the surrounding mountains, Debed Canyon offers the perfect mix of history, culture, and nature.

7. Areni Wine Country

Areni Wine Country

As grapes and vineyards have been cultivated here for over 6,000 years, it should come as no surprise to learn that the Areni Wine Country boasts some of the nation’s most delicious wines. Set among some stunning mountainous scenery, the vineyards blanket entire mountainsides and valley slopes, with charming little farmhouses and wineries punctuating the countryside.

While its fantastic local produce is what most people come for, the region also has some very interesting sights for you to enjoy, such as the ancient church of S Astvatsatsin and the Areni-1 Caves, which are home to a fascinating archaeological site.

6. Khor Virap Monastery

Khor Virap Monastery

Set among some absolutely jaw-dropping scenery, the Khor Virap Monastery is well worth a visit. A popular pilgrimage site, the monastery is renowned throughout the country for its stunning backdrop that sees Mount Ararat in Turkey loom dramatically in the distance. Its exquisite chapel was remarkably built all the way back in 642 AD, with later additions and extensions added over the centuries.

Meaning ‘deep dungeon,’ it is in Khor Virap that Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in the third century. After being released, he helped convert the local king to Christianity, which led to Armenia becoming the first Christian nation.

Garni

Located just a short distance away from Yerevan at the foot of the Khosrov Forest State Reserve, Garni is an enjoyable place to spend some time – although most people visit primarily to see its magnificent first century AD temple and delightful monastery. Perched atop a cliff edge overlooking ululating hills and mountains, the Temple of Garni displays some beautiful Hellenic architecture.

The 11th century Geghard Monastery has a fantastic fortified compound for you to explore, which encompasses a magnificent old church, elaborate carvings, and hot springs. Although these two historic sights are deservedly its main attractions, Garni has much more to offer: the surrounding countryside has a plethora of great paths and trails for you to hike, cycle, or horseback ride along.

In addition, the center of town has lots of fine restaurants on offer, as well as some beautiful old churches, while the nearby Garni Gorge is also well worth checking out.

4. Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan

The largest lake in the whole of the Caucasus, Lake Sevan’s tranquil waters seemingly stretch off into the distance forever. It is a popular holiday destination among both locals and foreigners alike due to the plethora of amazing recreational opportunities that it boasts.

Impressive old monasteries and churches, such as Sevanavank and Hayravank, can be found dotted along its scenic shores. However, it is the lake’s myriad of fantastic beaches that entice most holidaymakers, who come to lounge on their golden sands or enjoy the incredible array of watersports on offer.

Lying at around 2,000 meters above sea level, Lake Sevan is widely considered to be the ‘jewel of Armenia.’ Swimming in its inviting waters or sailing on its reflective surface are both popular pastimes, with hiking and cycling along its coastline also popular. While some villages and towns along the lakeshore are very laidback and make for a quiet getaway, others have lots of bars and nightclubs should you want a more lively holiday.

3. Noravank

Noravank

Surrounded by ruddy red cliff walls, this incredible 13th-century monastery is one of the most popular tourist sites in the country, and with good reason. Sporting some beautiful facades that are full of elaborate carvings and motifs, Noravank is a delight to visit.

Visitors can clamber up a steep stone staircase that winds up the side of the building if they want to explore the second floor.

While the architecture is certainly stunning for its intricacy and age, the surrounding Amaghu Valley is no less bewitching. Hiking through the gorge is a delightful affair as the red-brick walls tower above you. While the Surp Astvatsatsin Church is the site’s most photogenic feature, there are a couple of other lovely chapels and khachkars – Armenian cross-stones – for you to check out.

2. Geghard Monastery

Geghard Monastery

Lying on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Garni, Geghard Monastery is a very popular day-trip destination from the capital and is certainly worth visiting if you have the chance. Carved out of the mountainside, with majestic peaks overlooking it, the famous monastery has a beautiful church for you to wander around.

There are also a number of gorgeous chapels showcasing some elaborate and intricate carvings, with some parts of the complex dating all the way back to the fourth century.

The monastery’s scenic setting is absolutely stunning. It’s no surprise that it has long been a place of pilgrimage, with people having visited the site long before Christianity first found its way to Armenia. A must-see when in Armenia, Geghard Monastery certainly won’t disappoint with its incredible rock-hewn churches and chapels and beautiful setting in the Azat River gorge.

Yerevan

Despite being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Yerevan has surprisingly little to show for it in terms of historic buildings and monuments. This is because Soviet planners knocked down most of them in the 1920s in an attempt to create a ‘perfect city’ in the vein of Paris or Saint Petersburg. As such, Armenia’s capital now makes for a fascinating place to explore as Soviet-era buildings lie alongside wide avenues with some delightful old buildings and churches to be found scattered here and there.

While Yerevan is certainly not a pretty city, it does have a lot going for it as its streets positively thrum with life and countless cafes and terraces occupy every street corner, square and park. As well as being home to a third of the country’s population, the city also boasts lots of great cultural institutions in the shape of its many museums and theaters. Of these, the haunting Armenian Genocide Museum is simply a must visit if you want to understand the horrific events that so profoundly impacted the nation and its people.

With so many different sides to it, it is well worth spending a few days in Yerevan before heading off to explore the many incredible landscapes and age-old historic sights that dot the country.

8 Reasons To Visit Spectacular Yerevan, Armenia

top 10 reasons to visit armenia

  • Destinations

If it wasn’t for my quest to see a few select places along the Silk Road this year, I have to admit that I would have been hard-pushed to find Yerevan on the world map. I am quite embarrassed about that because not only is Yerevan one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, but I also heard much about its border issues with Azerbaijan and Turkey, yet I’d never bothered to learn more.

Arriving in Yerevan, located to the south of the country which borders Georgia (the only open border), Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran, it was pretty much love at first sight. The weather was sunny but the imposing Mount Ararat with its two peaks was snow-capped, making it look even more volcanic. The tree-lined streets were filled with people strolling along and sitting in cafés, and there was art and architecture waiting to be discovered at every corner.

There is so much history evident everywhere, as well as a strong national pride. Here are my personal reasons why you should be putting Yerevan on your “to-travel-to” list.

The Cascades Complex, Yerevan

1. The Art And Architecture

I know, I know. Really, the number one spot should have been taken by something historic, but bear with me. The first place everybody visiting Yerevan should go to first is the Cascades Complex. This is a set of steps, an incredible 572 of them, leading up the side of a hill, and once at the top (don’t worry, you can take the escalators within the Cafesjian Center for the Arts next to the steps) the views are incredible. Yerevan spreads out below you and Ararat fills the horizon. The step complex is typically Soviet in style, with fountains and sculptures all the way up.

At the bottom of the Cascades, you’ll find the wonderful sculpture park, part of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. World-class artists are represented here, all part of a private collection made available for the city to enjoy. The art center itself is a marvelous construction of what would normally have been a boring set of escalators leading up the hill. Instead, it has been cleverly utilized as a quirky gallery space.

The Eternal Flame of Armenian Genocide

2. The Museums

There are some fantastic museums in the city, with the Genocide Museum — which consists of a museum, the eternal flame, and the imposing Tsitsernakaberd Memorial — leading the pack. It is the most insightful and powerful of the museums but a must-see to understand the country and its people.

On Republic Square, there is the State Museum of Armenian History , showcasing finds dating back from the Stone Age to more modern cultural heritage such as local carpets. In the same building, you have the National Art Gallery, always running temporary exhibitions by local artists with an amazing array of superb talent on display. The modern art museum had a Banksy exhibition when I visited and generally has mold-breaking contemporary art in its rooms.

State Museum of Armenian History in Republic Square

3. Republic Square

If you want to stay in the heart of the city, I can recommend the Marriott Armenia Hotel right on Republic Square. With its museums, fountain, and Government House, the square is a site for celebrations as well as demonstrations. It is beautiful, and from the hotel’s windows, you have the chance to see Republic Square in the changing daylight and all lit up at night when it is stunning. It is a truly great spot for a hotel, with absolutely everything in Yerevan within walking distance.

4. The Blue Mosque

This 18th-century Persian Shia Mosque, also known as the Persian Mosque or the Mosque of Shah, is the last mosque operating in the whole of Armenia. It’s a reminder that Armenia was the first country in the world to embrace Christianity as a state religion. Maybe not quite as striking as the mosques of Isfahan or Samarkand, but its blue and green tiled exterior is beautiful, as is the little garden it is located in.

Mexican street café in Yerevan

5. The Café And Restaurant Culture

As I already mentioned, walking around Yerevan, you’ll stumble across restaurants and cafés everywhere. They have plenty of outdoor seating, making the most of the warmer months with people lingering over coffee and enjoying the green spaces. The green areas between the Armenian National Opera, Ballet Theatre, and Cascade Complex are filled with great outdoor cafés, as are the sides of the sculpture park.

Head along Moskovyan Street for an international selection of cuisines and types of restaurants. From wine bars to fine dining, street food to relaxed student hangouts, it’s all there. Must-try foods include all things lamb and eggplant, plus the lovely fresh flatbread called lavash , which is baked in clay ovens and stuffed with all sorts of things. For a wide variety of foods and some local entertainment, try Sherep Restaurant just off Republic Square next to the Marriott. Hugely popular with locals, make sure you book ahead.

Vernissage Market in the center of Yerevan

6. Vernissage Market

You always need a souvenir to bring back and there is no better place to search out some local arts and crafts than the open-air Vernissage Market — a short walk from Republic Square. Here, you’ll find a wide range of traditional Armenian crafts, souvenirs, artwork, jewelry, and antiques. It’s a great place to explore and purchase unique items, with blood-red ceramics featuring locally grown pomegranates, a firm favorite.

7. The Pride Of Armenians

What really struck me is the fact that everywhere in Yerevan, as well as outside the city limits, there are huge pictures of Armenians who live abroad. These individuals have helped their country with money or celebrity status to either build infrastructure, restore historic sites, donate art, or simply help out with some funds for the people.

From Charles Aznavour to Cher, and even the Kardashians, all have Armenian roots. And here is something I learned about how to spot someone with Armenian roots: the names all end in – ian , – jian , or a similar derivative. I spent a long time looking at the names of the artists in the Art Gallery and loved that there is such an easy way of connecting, wherever you find yourself.

Khor Virap with Mount Ararat in the background

8. The Day-Trip Opportunities

However lovely, Yerevan should never be just a city trip. The true beauty of Armenia lies outside of the city limits. A mountainous country with huge peaks, high lakes, and mountain passes, everywhere you look, ancient monasteries are perching atop cragged hills. Probably the closest and most impressive monastery is Khor Virap Monastery, situated near the border of Turkey. Khor Virap offers breathtaking views of Mount Ararat. This little monastery, originally dating to the 600s (with the current church dating to the 1600s), is a significant religious site. It’s the place where St. Gregory the Illuminator — the Patron Saint of Armenia and reason behind Armenia embracing Christianity — was imprisoned.

A natural beauty is Lake Sevan, located about 37 miles northeast of Yerevan. Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. On its shores lies the Sevanavank Monastery, but the lake is lovely just for its serenity and mountainous fringes. If you are also looking for Silk Road sites, the Orbelian’s Caravanserai not far from the lake is a must. The former overnight resting point during travel along the Silk Road, weary merchants had a chance to sleep, have their animals looked after, and meet other travelers along the way, while doing a bit of business as well.

For a way to see two countries at once, why not get a driver to take you across the border to Tbilisi in Georgia , a mere 4-hour drive from Yerevan?

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Yerevan, Armenia [2020]

Yerevan

If you are planning your next affordable vacation destination and you want to be amazed, then Yerevan, Armenia is exactly what you’re looking for.

Of course, I know only saying that it is an amazing place won’t convince you. So let’s dive right in and take a tour of the best places to visit in Yerevan.

Yerevan is not just the capital of Armenia, it’s the heart of a country. Armenia is full of breathtaking corners where you’ll meet something extraordinary every moment, and discover things that are new and things so old that it’s hard to believe. One of those extremely old places you will visit is the heart of this beautiful country itself, Yerevan. The city is 2800 years old; it has been through a lot during that time but it’s still alive, still bright, and it makes everyone who comes there feel like they’re at home. And what’s more, it is one of the safest countries in the world.

Table of Contents

People in Yerevan are super hospitable

When most people say “hospitality”, they normally refer to the industry: the hotels, restaurants and bars. But in Yerevan, hospitality isn’t just a term, it’s a lifestyle. People here are raised knowing that guests should be treated the best way possible, and there is no other way that locals know. The best and the easiest way to see this is to go to the open food market. There, you will find dozens of people from all over Armenia selling food. They will all ask you to try a little of what they are selling, so if you go once around the place, you might not need dinner anymore. And if they realize you are a guest of the city, you might well end up going home with gifts!

Nightlife in Yerevan

Yerevan Republic Square fountains

You know how everywhere in the world, streets are full of people and cheerful noise on Friday nights? Well, in Yerevan, every evening is like that. But when the sun goes down, the magic rises. The city that was called “Pink City” for the color of its buildings becomes the city of colorful lights, highlighting the alternate beauty of architecture. Every evening, you will also find the dancing fountains on the Republic Square, where hundreds of people gather to spend time near the dancing fountains. Meanwhile, across town in the Cascade area, a group of professional folk dancers called Karin give public dance lessons to whoever pleases to join them. Meanwhile, Norwegian Consul Tim Straight is taking pictures from his apartment on the 5th floor next door and posting them to Facebook.

Yerevan is the capital of food

Food is an amazingly delicious part of the Armenian culture. You can find thousands of interesting dishes and choose favorites for yourself. There are several national favorites that locals are very proud of, and you can find all of those dishes in restaurants, but, if at some point on your trip, you get invited to someone’s house for dinner, you definitely shouldn’t miss the opportunity.

Here is a list of the 7 must-have dishes in Armenia.

Water, water everywhere

If we talk about the food, there is no way we can skip talking about water in Armenia. In most cities, if you wanted to have water, you would have to buy it in a bottle. But, as you might have already noticed, Yerevan is not at all like most cities. Here you can find water fountains everywhere, which not only gives you fresh water all year long, but also gives it for FREE.

Transportation is cheap

Public transportation in Yerevan is another great topic to talk about. Of course, it is not as completely free as the water from the fountains, but there is a unique system for it. See, the transportation system in Yerevan is based on the “100 drams (AMD) rule”. To give you some understanding of how much that is, I’ll say that 100 drams is more or less the same as €0.18/$US0.21. And what does that really mean? It simply means that whatever type of public transport you take, it will cost you 100 drams. There are buses, microbuses and metro available in the city, all of which, regardless of where you’re going, cost 100 drams.  And even the taxis, for each kilometer you go, you will only pay 100 drams. On top of that, if you need to move in the center you can just use your feet, as the center is so small that you can get anywhere you want by walking.

Architecture in Yerevan

Yerevan-Republic-Square

Yerevan is one of the few places in the world where you can see the contrast of the new, old and very old buildings. In the city center, you will see all the new and shiny buildings, which are built right next to the old ornamental buildings. At the same time, in Erebuni district, you will find the 2800-year-old city remains. The best part is that those three districts have lived together in harmony for a long time now and they seem to be very comfortable with each other.

Festivals and museums in Yerevan, Armenia

Yerevan festivals

Festivals are known to repeat once a year or once every few years. It is true for Armenia, and Yerevan too, there many festivals coming after one another all the time, so if you are in Yerevan in any week of the year, you will find a festival or two to take part in. The number of festivals you could easily see tells every visitor that the locals are fond of celebrations, which is why there are celebrations organized for everything, from the city’s birthday to food festivals. You might find yourself in the middle of the movie festival, a berry festival, and even a barbeque festival! But if you are in Yerevan and for some reason, there is no festival to attend, there are still many museums to visit and keep your day interesting.

Daylight cafes and wine bar s

In every Armenian family, the mornings start with a cup of black coffee, but make no mistake that’s not only for the morning. Armenians love their black coffee so much that there are cafes literally everywhere in the city. The coffee here is not just a drink; it has become an obsession. But when the night falls, regardless of what day of the week it is, Saryan Street starts buzzing. This is where most of the wine bars in Yerevan are lined up, and you won’t be able to get a table there without a prior reservation.

Souvenirs as part of Yerevan

Yerevan Souvenirs

Souvenirs happen to be another big part of the Armenian culture. It is so big of a part that there is an enormous area in the very center of the city where you can find an open market of souvenirs, called “Vernissage”, all year long. The products found there are mostly handmade by different Armenian artists who come there to sell their products. And if you are thinking of taking a little something with you on your way home as a memory from Armenia, this is the place to go. And if you decide to stay, everyone will be only happy about it.

In short, if you are looking for a place where you can eat delicious food, meet extraordinary people and have fun all day long, then book a flight and a hotel, because Yerevan is waiting for you.

Lake Sevan is located so high up in the mountains, that when you sit on the bank it seems that the water surface is about to touch the sky. This amazing lake is the largest and possibly the most beautiful in the Caucasus. The clean fresh water only gets warm in the middle of the summer, which means it is the perfect place to cool down on a hot day. The lake, which locals call ‘the Armenian Sea,’ is surrounded by mountains. Spend an afternoon here and notice how every hour the water changes its colour, from azure to turquoise to navy blue. You can also explore the monastic complex of Sevanavank, built in 874, located nearby.

Armenian cuisine is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest in the South Caucasus. The dishes here are diverse and delicious thanks to the use of lots of spices, herbs, and wild flowers. In Armenia, and especially in Yerevan, there are many traditional restaurants offering a great choice of local dishes. To start with you can order spas, a creamy and low-calorie soup, prepared from fermented Armenian yogurt ( matsun) . For the second, try Armenian kyufta (meatballs) or tolma (grape leaves stuffed with minced meat). Also make sure to try juicy barbecue or khorovats, as locals say. Its preparation is a real ritual in which, according to traditions, only men take part. As a snack, sample the white Armenian cheese and basturma (dried meat with spices). You can wrap this in lava s h, Armenian national pita bread included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. For dessert, the best choice is the Armenian gata, a puff pastry that melts in your mouth.

Due to the favourable climate and the warm rays of the sun, the Armenian land provides a huge amount of juicy fruits and healthy vegetables for its residents. Every year in the summer and autumn the shop shelves are crammed with a variety of fruits, berries, and vegetables. When you visit, make sure to try the famous golden Armenian apricot, which absorbs the bright rays of Armenian sun every year and is guaranteed to please due to its gentle taste and aroma. Only in Armenia can you enjoy this delicious prunus armeniaca .

Many historians consider the Armenian Highlands as the birthplace of the eastern carpet. It is unknown whether it’s true or not, but from ancient times, the Armenian tradition of carpet weaving has been famous for its high and unique quality not only in the country, but also abroad. If you want to get acquainted with Armenian carpet weaving, we advise visiting the gallery and factory Mgeryan Karpet. In their gallery, you can see old works from the 16th-19th centuries, and buy the works you like the most. For a good buy, you can also visit Vernissage, an open-air souvenir fair located not far from the Republic Square. The fair offers a wide variety of things, antiques, old carpets, silver ceramics, pottery, national musical instruments, vases of onyx and much more.

Did you know that the water in Armenia is considered one of the safest and most delicious in the world. The secret is that it comes from pure natural sources. Another unique feature of Yerevan is that at almost any corner you can find small fountains with drinking water. In honour of its 2,750th anniversary, the city received 2,750 small fountains for every year. The anniversary has long passed but the fountains remain, and everyone can drink clean cold water free of charge.

Due to the mountainous terrain and favourable climate, Armenia is a great place for extreme sports. In recent years, it has become especially popular for paragliding. The places to fly in Armenia are diverse and picturesque with predictable macrometeorology. In summer, you can also enjoy widespread trekking and hiking. Tourists often choose to go climbing in Mount Aragats, the highest point of Armenia (4,090 meters or 13,420 feet). In winter, the country has excellent conditions for ski and snowboard lovers. The most popular ski resort is Tsaghkadzor, which has a four-speed chairlift, equipped with modern and safe technology and more than a dozen well-equipped ski slopes. In comparison to other European destinations, Armenia is a great alternative place to ski, with equipment available at affordable prices.

There is an old Armenian saying, ‘a guest is a gift from God’. On any occasion of joy or happiness, Armenians are quick to set the table for relatives and friends. Armenians also warmly welcome foreigners and want to do everything to make them feel comfortable in their homeland. Many tourists point out that nowhere else have they seen such hospitality as in Armenia. Do not be surprised if during your trip complete strangers invite you to their home and treat you to a variety of different goodies. And it is very likely that at the end of your journey you will make good Armenian friends who will be waiting for your return to their beloved homeland.

Ski slopes, ancient history and delicious food: All the reasons to give Armenia a go

Armenia has ranked within the top 10 safest destinations in the world, according to Numbeo’s safety index for 2024.

The Caucasus country came eighth out of 146 nations, rated according to survey responses addressing topics including violent crime, property crime and perceived safety.

Armenia’s historic capital, Yerevan, also performed well, landing 19th out of 333 cities.

It’s an attractive proposition for holidaymakers, but there are reasons other than peace of mind to visit Armenia. Ancient religious sites, delicious cuisine and a vibrant culture are abundant in Armenia and experiencing them all is easy, thanks to Armenia’s petite size (the landlocked country is less than 30,000 km2) .

Susanna Hakobyan, Deputy Head of the Tourism Committee for Armenia, recommends heading into Armenia’s rural regions to experience the best of the country. “It's better to get out of the capital city because in the regional areas we have this authentic feel,” she explains. “We have authentic food and culture and exploring these things will help visitors to dive deep into the real Armenian tradition, history and way of life.”

Here are just a few reasons to give Armenia a go in 2024.

Armenia’s local cuisine might surprise you

The country’s complicated history of kingdoms and conquerors has moulded Armenian cuisine over the years. But the rich soil has always yielded lentils, wheat, figs, and apricots.

Bread is big here, and the traditional ‘lavash’ has been deemed a significant cultural icon, so its creation is on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The thin flatbread can be made leavened or unleavened and is often infused with poppy seeds. It’s used prolifically for wraps, particularly around the various meat in ‘khorovats’, Armenian barbecue. It dries out fast, but is sometimes stacked dry and then softened with water for later use.

Other traditional foods include ‘dolma’: a vine or cabbage leaf wrapped around ground beef or lamb blended with rice, herbs and spices. The dish is celebrated annually in a festival called Uduli in the city of Armavir, which showcases a wide range of dolma alongside cooking classes and competitions.

Those lucky enough to attend a celebratory Armenian event such as a wedding or Christmas party might sample ‘ghapama’. A pumpkin stuffed with rice and dried fruits such as apricots, figs and raisins, this traditional dish is delivered to the table whole, then opened by slicing its sides.

Armenia’s ski slopes are underrated

Armenia isn't a destination many skiers likely consider when planning a snowy escape, but with peaks higher than the Alps and long sunny days in the winter, it’s set up well for piste fans.

New to the country’s ski scene is Myler Resort in the Aparan region of Armenia. Here, skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and skaters can explore 100 marked pistes, a skiable vertical drop of 972 metres and three resort villages. Bars and eateries abound, providing guests with great apres options and thrilling skiing.

Another popular ski resort is Tsakhkadzor, the largest ski area in the country, which is just 40 minutes by car from Yerevan. Thirty kilometres of pistes await (60 per cent of which are black), the highest of which starts at 2,819 metres.

Skiing in Armenia is best enjoyed between December and March when the temperatures are suitably cold to ensure ideal slope conditions.

Immerse yourself in an Armenian festival

Festivals are a great way to get a sense of a country’s cultural traditions and history, and Armenia has a ton of them. There are year-round festivities from food and wine celebrations to hot air balloon and jazz festivals if you know where to look.

Yerevan Wine Days is one of the most popular. Drawing over 160,000 visitors and featuring 17,000 bottles of wine last year, this vibrant festival takes place in early June and is designed to celebrate Armenia’s more than 6,000-year history with the drink.

Saryan Street is the centre of the event, with wine producers from all over the country offering samples of their libations. A stage hosts continuous live music while street food vendors provide visitors with a taste of their delicious, local cuisine.

Yerevan Jazz Day, the communal water-splashing of the Vardavar Festival, the festival of honey and berries, and an international film festival are just some of the other many and varied events on offer throughout the year.

Armenia’s UNESCO Heritage Sites will wow

As the world’s first Christian nation, Armenia has serious historical significance; much of it is written across its landscapes. UNESCO deemed Three sites culturally significant, and the country has five more on its ‘tentative’ list.

All are well worth visiting, but one of the highlights is the Etchmiadzin Cathedral. Considered the mother of the Armenian Apostolic Church and claimed by some to be the oldest cathedral in the world, this beautiful building caught UNESCO’s eye as a prime example of the central-domed cross-hall style of the church, which defined the architecture in much of the region.

Closer to Armenia’s northern border, in the Lari Province, lie the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. Byzantine monasteries dating back to the 10th century, these mostly intact, historic monuments are a testament to the seamless blending of Armenian and Byzantine architecture. They are 16 kilometres apart, so visiting them via a guided tour is often easiest.

Another striking monastery (and Armenia’s third UNESCO site) is a collection of tombs and churches cut into the rock of the Upper Azat Valley. Just an hour east of Yerevan, the  medieval buildings cut a striking pose against their steep cliff surroundings. On the way in, take a minute to toss a stone on the ledge in a cliff wall and make a wish. Locals believe if it stays on the ledge, your wish might just come true.
