2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

The 2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are related to the strategic alliance between DP World Tour and the European Tour that was announced in November 2021, changing the name of the tour and raising the minimum value of purses to $2 million.

European Tour co-sanctioned, purse-boosted events

The two tours are co-sanctioning three events on their schedules, including the European Tour's Scottish Open, which has a new sponsor in Genesis, as well the Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour). The fields in all three events will feature a split of player availability between DP World Tour (European Tour) and European Tour pros, including spots for 50 European Tour players in the Barbasol and Barracuda Championships, which will be played opposite the Scottish Open and Irish Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open will remain part of the European Tour's Rolex Series. The Irish Open, which will not be co-sanctioned in 2022, will have a purse boosted by the DP World Tour (European Tour) to $6 million -- nearly double the amount offered this year.

There are a variety of new events on the schedule this year, including the Ras al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, the Pecanwood Classic and Steyn City Championship in South Africa, the Soudal Open in Belgium, two new events in Asia (including one in Japan) and the return of the Cyprus Open.

World Golf Championships halved

Since 2009, there have been four World Golf Championships events on the schedule. However, there are just two on the 2022 schedule: the WGC-HSBC Champions in China from Oct. 28-31 and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas from March 23-27.

With the Memphis-based event becoming a playoff event, the other change is the WGC-Mexico Championship dropping out of the series. A Mexico Championship is listed on the schedule as a full-field event.

‘A new era in global golf’: European Tour to be renamed DP World Tour

• Dubai company will assume title sponsorship in 2022
• Prize fund from next year will exceed $200m

The collective will of golf’s establishment to swat aside challenges by Saudi Arabia means the European Tour will be renamed from the start of next year. DP World, the Dubai-based logistics company, will take on title sponsorship of the tour, with prize funds to increase as a direct result. The European Tour, formed in 1972, will keep its name as an overarching corporate entity only.

Saudi Arabia’s manoeuvres in the professional game have met staunch resistance from the European and PGA Tours, who are now in strategic alliance. Greg Norman was recently confirmed as the public face of a Saudi-based series of 10 events on the Asian Tour. The Saudis have long-held aspirations of a golf super league but, as yet, have no formal buy-in from leading players.

The DP World Tour will lead to prize funds – including major championships and World Golf Championships – totalling more than $200m (£147m) for the first time. Tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour must have a minimum purse of $2m.

Next year will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new events in the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Africa and Belgium. Neither the European Tour nor DP World would detail the length of their partnership or its total monetary value but it is understood the latter runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.

“This announcement is momentous and will herald a new era in global golf,” said Keith Pelley, the European Tour’s chief executive. “When I joined [in 2016] I told the board I felt the name of the tour was a misnomer and did not reflect our brand. We are definitely a world tour.

“The DP World Tour is a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of ‘world’ in our new title better reflects our global reach. We will always remember our heritage and those who have gone before us who helped us shape our tour but we also rejoice in our global footprint.”

Pelley refused to reference directly the Saudi/Asian Tour alliance. However, this will inevitably be viewed as the further closing of ranks by the PGA and European Tours.

Rory McIlroy, speaking via video conference to a media event held in Dubai , branded the deal “great news for global golf”. The four-times major winner has previously spoken out against Saudi plans for his sport.

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, said: “I’ve said before that our respective tours are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts.”

The Northern Irishman said he has never received an offer from LIV whilst his manager called the switch rumours ‘fake news’

Rory McIlroy has pledged his loyalty to the PGA Tour and dismissed rumours that built at last week’s Masters about him being poised to join LIV Golf in a £750 million deal.

The world No 2 was the breakaway circuit’s most vocal opponent in its first year of existence. But since the Saudi Public Investment Fund that bankrolls LIV signed the “framework agreement” with the PGA Tour last summer, he has softened his opinion, conceding that he was wrong to “judge” players who did jump ship.

Inevitably, this climbdown led to conjecture that he could follow Ryder Cup team-mate Jon Rahm - who defected in December with a £400 million upfront payment - with even an old manager, Chubby Chandler, declaring it could well come to pass.

‌Considering that McIlroy said nine months ago “if LIV was the last place to play on earth then I’d retire”, it would be perhaps the biggest about-turn in sporting history.

‌On Monday, a newspaper report claimed that he was on the brink, forcing the phone of the Northern Irishman’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty, to blow up and at least one bookmaker to quote him at odds-on to leave this year. O’Flaherty called it “fake news” and on Tuesday, McIlroy, himself, moved to bash down the story.

“I honestly don’t know how these things get started,” McIlroy told Golf Channel. “I’ve never been offered a number from LIV. I’ve never contemplated going to LIV. I’ve made it clear over the last two years that I don’t think it’s something for me.

“It doesn’t mean that I judge people that have went and played over there. I think one of the things that I’ve realised over the past two years is people can make their own decisions for whatever they think is best for themselves. Who are we to judge them for that?

“But personally, for me, my future is here on the PGA Tour and it’s never been any different. I will play on the PGA Tour for the rest of my career.”

Since resigning from the PGA Tour’s policy board late last year, McIlroy has urged the two parties to reach a settlement to reunify the game. There are fears that it could take years not months to reach that point, with the US Department of Justice waiting to analyse the details before deciding if it would approve any merger.

In the meantime, the friction has remained with the PGA Tour taking on $1.5 billion (£1.2 billion) of private US investment from Strategic Sports Group, a consortium led by Liverpool FC owners Fenway Sports Group. LIV has also highlighted it is not going away by not only luring Rahm, but another Europe Ryder Cup player in Tyrrell Hatton two months ago.

McIlroy admits that he has met with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor and LIV chairman, but only to discuss what happens to the game in the future. He bemoaned the fact that the intrigue and recrimination continues to overshadow the golf itself. “It’s unfortunate that we have to deal with it, but this is the state our sport is in,” he said.

McIlroy was speaking at Harbour Town where he plays in this week’s RBC Heritage. He finished in a tie for 22nd at Augusta behind Scottie Scheffler, the world No 1, who is also in the limited $20 million field at the South Carolina course.
