Oklahoma Travel Nursing Jobs

Jobs listing, what to see and do.

travel rn oklahoma

Oklahoma is an ideal state for travel nurses looking to explore the great outdoors.  When you plan your assignment, be sure to visit the cities with great vibes like Oklahoma City and Tulsa.  Cruise along historic Route 66 and experience one of our country’s first highways leading to the heartland of America playing a pivotal role for people migrating west in the 1930s.

If you enjoy museums, Oklahoma City is the right place for you.  To look and learn is a common theme for traveling nurses on the road, especially here in Oklahoma where you can find the Museum of Osteology, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.  For a deeper understanding of folk music, visit Tulsa, Oklahoma, where you can tour the Woody Guthrie Center and the Tulsa Performing Arts Complex and immerse yourself in one of its five theaters hosting a variety of musical flavors.

Hit the great plains with a traveling nurse job in oklahoma, travel nursing reviews, jennifer, rn.

The response time from my recruiter and nurse specialist is amazing! They both have been so great to work with on my first assignment out in California!!! Chad and Samantha both are super caring and very responsive! I already extended my contract with the hospital because of the smooth process. They made the transition from Florida to California a lot loss stressful than I imagined. Would definitely recommend them both!!!

My recruiter, and other staff I have had the pleasure of interacting with, are all so friendly and helpful. My recruiter is responsive, and even reached out while she was on vacation to check on me! I’ve worked with other agencies in the past, but Stability is next level when it comes to making your travel nursing experience as seamless as possible! Special shout out to Lindsay (best recruiter ever) and Tracy. Amazing people to work with.

Brittany J.

My recruiter is very responsive and personable. I have NEVER had any issues with them!! This agency even has PTO! None of my co workers with other agencies have this benefit!! Also the rates are equal or higher than most other agencies!! Everything feels more like family than business and for that I would choose stability over any other agency!! I am so happy I chose to work with them!

Sopheare C.

My recruiter Amanda is amazing and always timely with her responses. Debbie who is my nurse experience specialist who is with me all times of the contract is truly awesome. Love how responsive she is and will answer any and all my questions. Big thanks to Jesse my compliance coordinator for making all the appointments and getting me travel ready. Can’t thank my team enough for all they do. Any question or issue I have they resolve right away. And I love that they breakdown each contract into a spread so you know exactly what your getting for the terms of the contract.

I have been incredibly impressed by the professionalism, ease of communication, ability to have all requirements for onboarding fulfilled in a timely manner, and just overall outstanding service. Lindsay Hernandez is my particular recruiter and she has been a pleasure to work with, as well as all the team members at Stability. I’m looking forward to staying with them for my next assignment. I highly recommend them to my nursing friends, and anyone looking to travel as a nurse!

Our nation’s Midwestern region holds strong appeal for its hospitality, natural beauty, and affordability. Deep in the heart of the region is Oklahoma — and like the “Sooners” who raced to the territory to claim a stake of land, Oklahoma still represents a land of opportunity for industrious, hard-working individuals. Read on to learn more about travel nursing in Oklahoma, the Sooner State.

Nursing in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is an attractive destination for travel nurses, due to its status as a  Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state . The NLC is a multi-state nursing license that allows nurses to practice in participating states without having to apply for a new license each time. The multistate license makes practicing across state borders more affordable and convenient, and helps remove the cumbersome expenses and paperwork involved in securing multiple licenses.

Oklahoma faces many of the same challenges facing our nation with respect to the nursing shortage — including an aging population and aging nursing workforce. Because many professionals tend to gravitate toward metropolitan areas, Oklahoma’s rural areas are especially hard hit. Nurses who desire to devote their skills to medically underserved communities could find travel nursing in Oklahoma both professionally and personally rewarding.

Oklahoma is home to more than 150 hospitals and healthcare institutions, three of which are high performing in a total of 10 procedures and conditions, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Quality of life

Travel nursing in Oklahoma

The Sooner State earned its nickname from early homesteaders who rushed to claim a stake of land in the Oklahoma Territory in the Land Runs of 1889. The state also has a rich Native American and cowboy heritage, which are celebrated to this day through cattle drives, songs, movies, books, and poems.

While the state’s history is still a rich part of the culture today, its larger cities are becoming increasingly cosmopolitan — with a burgeoning dining scene and recent influx of younger residents. Oklahoma’s two largest cities — Tulsa and Oklahoma City — both grace U.S. News & World Report’s list of the Best Places to Live. The report cites the cities’ emerging cultural scenes and signature hospitality defined by close relationships as important contributors to quality of life in both cities.

Cost of living

For travel nurses hoping to devote more of their hard-earned paycheck to savings, Oklahoma’s low cost of living can help contribute to your financial goals. Cost of living in Oklahoma is well below the national average , with housing contributing most significantly to the margin, at just 62 percent of the national average. Grocery, healthcare, transportation, and utility costs are also lower in Oklahoma than averages nationwide.

Sites, sports, and social scene

Travel nursing in Oklahoma

Turner Falls Park , home to one of the state’s tallest waterfalls at 77 feet, is a popular destination for adventure-seekers. Nestled in the Arbuckle Mountains, the falls settle into a natural swimming pool and features sandy beaches, natural caves, and camping spots.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is another must-see for outdoor enthusiasts. The Wildlife Refuge, the oldest facility in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service system, is nearly 60,000 acres of protected habitat featuring more than 1,000 species of plants and animals. Visitors can hike, camp, fish, rock climb, or take guided tours to spot area wildlife — including a herd of nearly 650 bison that call the habitat home.

Oklahoma’s ranching history bears a heavy influence on the region’s culinary tastes — specifically, steak and BBQ. One of the most iconic places to order a steak is Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, Oklahoma City’s oldest continuously operated restaurant, which opened its doors more than a century ago. And BBQ lovers will enjoy the contemporary take on BBQ at Iron Star Urban Barbeque in Oklahoma City.

Sports fans also have a lot to cheer about in Oklahoma. From the Oklahoma City Thunder and OKC Energy Football Club to the storied Oklahoma Sooners football program, there is action around the state all year long.

Consider travel nursing in Oklahoma

There are many factors to consider when choosing a travel nursing assignment. For ease of licensing, low cost of living and warm hospitality, Oklahoma is a solid prospect to consider.

Top 5 Hospitals in Oklahoma

While major urban centers like New York, NY , Los Angeles, CA , and Boston, MA , often pave the way in healthcare innovation and progress, Oklahoma’s hospitals are on a distinct journey to establish a significant presence among the nation’s foremost healthcare institutions.

Among the hospitals in Oklahoma evaluated by U.S. News and World Report , two have met the stringent criteria to earn regional rankings: St. Francis Hospital of Tulsa secured the top position, closely followed by Hillcrest Medical Center. Despite their commendable achievements, neither hospital has garnered a national ranking.

1. St. Francis Hospital

  • Location: Tulsa
  • Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Failure
  • Kidney Failure
  • Stroke
  • Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy)
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Hip Replacement
  • Knee Replacement

2. Hillcrest Medical Center

  • Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Heart Failure

Although only two hospitals in Oklahoma were ranked by U.S. World and News, the state has over 160 hospitals and healthcare facilities. The absence of a national or regional ranking or high performance in specific procedures or conditions does not necessarily mean poor working environments. Instead, it indicates a need for improved quality healthcare, especially in rural areas. Travel nurses with exceptional experience are best suited to bridge this gap.

Cost of Living for Travel Nurses in Oklahoma

While initial pay rates for travel nurses in Oklahoma may not immediately dazzle compared to other regions, the state’s affordability offers a distinct advantage. Oklahoma’s cost-effective living standards ensure that your take-home pay as a travel nurse can compete with, if not surpass, contracts in high-cost areas such as New York or California.

In the 2021 report by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), Oklahoma ranks as the second most affordable state, with an annual average of $38,650 spent on personal consumption expenditures.

Housing Costs in Oklahoma:

In Oklahoma, the median rent is $1,393 per month, which is $708 lower than the national average. If you’re looking for more budget-friendly options, consider studio apartments ranging from $550 to $875 .  For those traveling with their family in tow, the median rent for a 3-bedroom home is $1,500 .

Essential Costs — Food, Transportation, and Utilities:

Regarding necessary expenses, Oklahomans spend around $230 monthly on food, and monthly utility costs are approximately $397 . Additionally, gas prices in the state are around $3.576 per gallon, coming in 28 cents below the national average.

Oklahoma offers an attractive solution for short-term living, whether you’re based in urban centers like Oklahoma City or nestled in rural landscapes. For travel nurses seeking cost-effective lodging options during their assignments, Oklahoma presents a compelling choice. Notably, Oklahoma City boasts the second-lowest cost of living across the state, surpassed only by Muskogee. As a travel nurse, this affordability directly contributes to your earning potential.

Although stipends and pay rates might initially seem less competitive than those in states like California or New York, the real advantage lies in reducing essential expenses such as fuel, groceries, housing, and leisure activities. This results in a substantial portion of your earnings remaining accessible instead of being absorbed by daily necessities.

Pros & Cons of Travel Nursing in Oklahoma

Pros of travel nursing in oklahoma:.

  • Cost-effective living and enhanced earnings – Oklahoma’s low cost of living allows travel nurses to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank on the basics.
  • Inclusive community – With a culture of warmth and open arms, this community nurtures strong bonds and a profound sense of belonging. Unlike larger cities where many prefer isolation, this haven of inclusivity thrives. The moniker of Oklahoma City, “The Big Friendly,” wasn’t earned by accident – it embodies the essence of this place. You’ll seamlessly become part of this embracing environment as a travel nurse.
  • Vast landscapes and outdoor excursions – Oklahoma’s diverse landscapes, including rolling hills, serene lakes, and expansive prairies, offer a plethora of outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery for nature enthusiasts to enjoy. Whether you’re into hiking, fishing, scenic drives, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, Oklahoma has it all.
  • Cultural fusion and historical enrichment – As a travel nurse, you’ll have the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Oklahoma’s captivating blend of Native American, Western, and Southern cultures. This enriching experience goes beyond surface-level exploration, allowing you to engage with local traditions, festivals, and cuisine that provide insights into the state’s historical heritage and Westward Expansion contributions.
  • Vibrant arts scene – The state hosts a thriving arts community with museums, galleries, theaters, and cultural events.

Cons of Travel Nursing in Oklahoma:

  • Healthcare facility variability – When choosing to work as a travel nurse in Oklahoma, it’s important to be ready for fluctuations in the quality of care at different healthcare facilities. Adapting effectively is key to ensuring consistent delivery of exceptional patient care.
  • Temporary housing uncertainty – Securing suitable temporary housing for travel nurses might be less predictable in more rural areas of Oklahoma. Limited availability or varying options could demand careful planning and proactive arrangements to ensure comfortable living arrangements during your assignment.
  • Weather  – Oklahoma witnesses a distinct tornado season from early spring to late summer, characterized by severe weather patterns and intense storms. Planning ahead and understanding these seasonal shifts can mitigate concerns or allow you to avoid this season altogether.
  • Cultural adjustment – Navigating the process of embracing the local culture can introduce social and lifestyle adjustments for travel nurses, especially when it diverges significantly from your background. While these differences may present initial challenges, they also pave the way for personal growth and enriching experiences.
  • Limited Public Transportation – In Oklahoma, the public transportation system might not match the level of advancement in other states. As a travel nurse, having an independent means of transportation becomes crucial for maintaining smooth mobility throughout your experience.

Things To Do on Your Days Off

While it might not be the top-of-mind destination for leisurely pursuits, Oklahoma is an undiscovered gem ripe for exploration during your downtime. With a rich history and stunning state and national parks like Robbers Cave State Park and Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Oklahoma offers endless opportunities for nurses seeking relaxation or adventure.

For those drawn to city life, Tulsa and Oklahoma City offer urban environments with cultural attractions, dining options, local arts scene, live performances, and historic landmarks. On the other hand, if you’re seeking a more tranquil experience, rural and quaint towns like the historic Guthrie and the charming Medicine Park dot the landscape, each with its unique charm and character.

Nature lovers have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. You can experience the breathtaking beauty of Osage Hills State Park or relax by the peaceful lakes of state parks, such as Beavers Bend. If you’re a hiker, you can explore the scenic trails at Roman Nose State Park or choose the winding paths of the Ouachita National Forest and Tallgrass Prairie Preserve to immerse yourself in nature’s magnificence.

Perhaps you’re inclined to satisfy your historical curiosity by visiting the Cherokee Heritage Center or the Oklahoma History Center, where you can immerse yourself in the region’s captivating past. Oklahoma’s cultural tapestry comes alive through dynamic fairs and festivals, such as the Tulsa International Mayfest, the vibrant Oklahoma State Fair, and the culturally rich Cherokee National Holiday Festival. And don’t miss the chance to treat your taste buds at local eateries that offer a blend of flavors from diverse cultures, featuring barbecue, green chile, and traditional Native American cuisine.

Whether you’re drawn to the energy of city life or the tranquility of nature, Oklahoma presents an array of experiences to enhance your days off.
