with, but too bulky and heavy to carry around if you live out of your suitcase. However, you just can’t pick any brush because it’s small in size. Keep these pointers in mind before making a purchase.

What To Look For When Purchasing A Travel Hair Brush

It’s best to pick a brush that reduces staticity. Staticity in your hair causes frizz, breakage and dryness, and thus should be avoided at all costs. If you are always on the get-go and often have to brush your damp hair, go for brushes that are made specifically for brushing wet hair. Go for one that offers pain-free detangling – they are less likely to cause breakage.

Choose a professional-grade brush with boar bristles if you identify as an “organic girl” and want to use a brush made from natural and high-quality material. A boar bristle brush is amazing but it might be a little expensive. They easily distribute the natural oil from your scalp throughout your hair, making it shine. If you want to go for something more pocket-friendly, opt for a flexible nylon bristle brush or wooden brush. Choose a brush with a non-slip grip if you tend to experience sweaty palms.

  • Preferences

It’s not necessary for your brush to be tiny to be travel-friendly. If you are not comfortable using a very small brush, go for the ones with a foldable design. One good option is a brush that comes with a cover. This protects the bristles from getting damaged in your bag. Wig-friendly brushes are a thing! If you frequently use hair pieces, look for brushes that will be gentle enough to detangle hair without pulling the wig off your head.

Getting a rubber massage cushion with your brush is a good idea if you suffer from frequent headaches or like tight hairstyles with a hair accessory that pulls at the scalp. It’ll act like a massager for your head by stimulating the blood flow. Those that often use heat styling tools should invest in a brush that is anti-slip and light enough to be managed by one hand. A compact, densely bristled brush would be the way to go.

When caring for your hair, it is crucial to practice good hygiene. Dandruff, hair loss, and fungal infections are all caused by a dirty brush. Invest in a brush that can be quickly cleaned and sterilized. Maintain a weekly brush cleaning routine.

The Bottom Line

Travel hair brushes are ergonomically designed with lightweight materials, natural bristles, and non-slip soft touch handles. They are compact enough to fit in most handbags and pockets. These travel-friendly size hair brushes tame frizz, control static, and help in styling your hair anytime, anywhere! Try the  Tangle Teezer  for an innovative design that helps detangle and smoothen hair without causing breakage or damage, and for an eco-friendly, natural, and wooden option, go for the GranNaturals Wooden Bristle Detangler Hairbrush . If you’re looking for something fancy which is foldable and comes with a mirror, choose the Ancable Folding Hair Brush. If you’re looking for something fancy that has a foldable design and comes with a mirror, choose the Ancable Folding Hair Brush. Each brush from the above list offers unique features, so choose one that aligns with your hair care routine and preferences.

NEWVANGA International Universal All in One Travel Adapter

Traveling With a Dual Voltage Hot Air Brush

Typically the best round brush hair dryers for travel should be dual voltage and have two options: 110-120V (US) and 220-240V (Europe). It is ideal for travel because it is safe to use at home or abroad.

When hair tools are designed so to be used in different countries, they’ll be labeled as “dual-voltage”.

A travel adapter enables you to plug your dual-voltage electronics into international outlets. Not all countries use the same type of plug so I recommend you buy an international adapter like this .

Why Be Aware When Using a Dual Voltage Hair Dryer Brush?

Hair tools such as blow dryers, wands, curling irons, and straighteners use up a large amount of electricity so it’s particularly important that they are used with the correct voltage.

For example, in the US we use 110-120V whereas in Europe they use 220-240V. If we plug our electronics into each other’s outlets, they can blow a fuse and stop working. In some cases, they can even fry your hair. The video below can also shed light on adapters, converters, and the right voltage.

Learn about travel adapters, converters, and voltage in this video !

It’s important to understand that an adaptor and converter are NOT the same things. An adapter fits the outlets and a converter changes the electrical current so your electronics down blow a fuse!

I have the Conair Hot Air Curler with dual voltage. I’m in the US and traveling to Greece and Italy soon. After I switch over the voltage setting, can I just use an adapter to plug into the wall or do I need to use a converter? Thanks!

Alex

Hi Jennifer, that’s correct. As long as the hair tool is dual voltage you only need an adapter for it to work. Have a brilliant time on your travels!

Alleen Cater

I want a brush that will work in Japan, where the voltage is 100. The dual voltage brushes I see on the internet appear to assume travel to Europe.

Ruby

I need a dual voltage hairbrush dryer that actually works in Europe. Has anyone used these? Do you need a converter AND adapter?

tricia

i have used the Plavogue dryer brush in Italy, Spain, Sweden, Scotland and Amsterdam with no problems! You just have to plug into the adapter for that country. I have had it for 4+ years, I use it daily(at home) and i can highly recommend it….however, the highest speed/heat just stopped working so there is a shelf life. Still good product for the cost! If it was $200+ I would have expected it to work forever:)

Eleanor Wiggins

I am looking for a dual voltage rotating hair brush to take to Barbados. Can anyone help. Searched and searched ? thank you Eleanor

12 Effective Shampoos for Straight Hair that Add Body and Shine

Vacation beauty: the best hair brush for travel.

The ultimate multitasking brush.

Welcome to holiday travel season! We do love a good vacation when we can get them. This means that it’s high time to pack up of our hair care products and tools and figure out which ones will hold up during our travels. When it comes to packing hair supplies you already know your essentials, but often we’re asked, “what is the best hair brush for travel?” You may have multiple brushes you use at home for styling, detangling, and more but it seems like overkill to pack more than one, especially with limited luggage space. In a nutshell? The best hair brush for travel should be able to do it all.

Read on to see what the best hair brush for travel should do:

The Best Hair Brush For Travel: Meet The Paddle Brush

best hair brush for travel paddle

1. The best brush for all hair types

When it boils down to it, the best all-rounder hair brush for all hair types and lengths is the paddle brush . We do like to recommend many different brushes for different hair types , but no one can go wrong with a paddle brush! Right now we’re into the Nexxus Ibiza Cx2 Paddle Hair Brush : Because it is large and has pins that are evenly spaced, this brush type works well for both detangling and styling.

2. Styling with a paddle brush

Because of the size of the brush and its widely spaced pins, a paddle brush is ideal for styling. You can totally use for your at-home blowout  and use it to help you style your hair into sleek looks. Plus, the springy base of the brush makes it super comfortable when brushing near the scalp. Use the paddle brush, and just keep in mind that you need to be gentle. It’s better for the brush, and more importantly, it’s better for your hair.

3. Why size doesn’t always matter for travel

When searching for the best hair brush for travel, many sources will tell you to try and find a more compact or smaller-sized brush, or a brush with a folding handle. We agree that small brushes are needed if you’re going hiking or backpacking, but for your average traveler, fitting in one standard sized hairbrush into your carry on shouldn’t be an issue. We think it’s more important to have a full-sized overachiever of a brush that helps you get the hair you want than to save two inches of space in your suitcase.

4. Which hairbrushes to avoid for travel

When you are traveling, even for a short period of time you need a brush that can do it all. Brushes that are uni-taskers aren’t the smartest for traveling. As much as you may love your teasing brush or your fine-toothed comb for getting precise styles, neither will help detangle your hair or make blow-drying easy and effective. First choose a brush that can help you with your daily hair needs, then see if you have space in your case to toss in another one (or two!) for extra styling help.

Regularly remove hair and debris from your travel brush to keep it in tip-top shape. This includes removing excess hairs that have accumulated on the bristles, as well as dirt or other particles that may be stuck in between them.

To ensure a quality brushing experience with minimal damage, use a dedicated cleaning tool such as an old soft toothbrush for regular cleaning of your travel brush’s bristles.

Lastly, look for lightweight and ergonomic designs that are easy to use while detangling and managing all types of hair.

Mix a bit of shampoo with warm water and soak your brush for 15 minutes to ensure it’s thoroughly clean. Cleaning frequency depends on the material – boar hair brushes require more frequent cleaning than nylon bristles, as oils are absorbed into the bristles.

The 32 Best Hair Brushes for Every Hair Type

Because not all hair brushes are created equal.

Microphone, Pattern, Audio equipment, Design, Brush, Comb,

When we were young, any kind of detangling tool for our hair fell into, at most, two categories: brushes and combs. Both were my mortal enemies as a child, as my mom desperately tried to undo  the mass of knots  that is my hair's natural state. But one day I woke up and suddenly found that the list of two tools  had expanded overnight  to:  round brushes, wet brushes, paddle brushes, wide-toothed combs, boar-bristle brushes... But  no one ever explained  what each one did, or if I needed all of them. So I'm here to walk you through the secret language of hair brushes.

The kind of brush you should use depends on your hair type and preferred styling.  What you use when your hair is wet and freshly washed isn't the same as the brush you use when it's styling time. Brushing your hair does more than you might think, too:  Along with detangling, brushes can energize the scalp and help evenly distribute oils so you can have a healthy head of hair.  With the brush market so heavily saturated right now, picking the perfect one for your hair goals can be difficult. For all price points, hair types, and styles, use this hair brush guide to figure out which tool needs a spot on your vanity.

Before getting into the anatomy of brushes, a quick word on combs.  The spacing between each tooth will tell you what kind of hair the comb is best for.  For curly-haired ladies who don't brush their hair outside of the shower, wide-tooth combs (with larger spaces between each tooth) are great options, because they detangle without breaking up the natural curl pattern. If you have fine hair, combs with less space between each tooth works well. Combs with a spike on one end and very little space between each tooth are great for running alongside a flat-iron for super-sleek hair, or for sectioning hair before a blowout.

Detangling Brushes

The word "detangling" might transport you into a youthful memory of being violently attacked by a hairbrush (is that just me?) but, truth be told, most brushes are technically detangling brushes. However, brushes that are branded as "detangling brushes" actually serve a unique purpose.  Hair is fragile, and ripping, tearing, and breaking are all harmful practices that occur when we brush our hair too aggressively or with the wrong style of brush.  This is especially true when hair is wet and at its most delicate.

Detangling brushes are most often specifically designed to be gentle enough to use on wet hair, though they can be used on dry hair as well if your hair isn't super thick. This is a great staple for most women to own, unless they have curl patterns that don't react well to any kind of brushing. If your hair is prone to tangles and a comb won't cut it, bring a detangling brush into the shower with you to eliminate any knots and work product through your hair evenly.

Paddle Brushes

Paddle brushes are the wilder, more specialized sisters of detangling brushes.  They work best on women with long, thick hair , since they're often too large and unwieldy on short or thin hair. Most paddle brushes are designed for dry hair, as a daily detangler and smoother (picture: That scene from  Tangled  where Rapunzel spends an hour brushing her hair on the floor).

For women with straight to wavy hair who aren't looking for complex styling, paddle brushes can also be used to blow-dry hair straight. They're also super effective post heat-styling to brush out curling-wand curls or to keep a blow-out looking natural, so we don't end up with  meme-able  hair.

Round Brushes

Round brushes may be the most elusive brushes of all time. Yes, we see them a lot and understand that we should probably own one, but there are so many variations that seem to remain mysterious. A quick rundown: Round brushes are perfect for creating that  voluminous, classic wavy blowout  that we all hope to run into an ex with. However, there are so many different sizes of round brush, with different types of bristles, and those two details will determine exactly what your style looks like.

This is a general rule:  the smaller the barrel of a round brush, the more curly or wavy your hair will be after blow-drying.  This is because you hair can wrap around the brush more times, therefore giving more of a wave. The exception to this rule is for pixie cuts or bangs, where small-barrel round brushes should be used to effectively style. Larger barrel round brushes are better for created a sleek blowout, and a medium barrel is most commonly used for that classic wavy blowout. Of course, this is all dependent on your length of hair. A medium-barrel brush on chin-length hair will produce a sleeker look, because the hair doesn't have the length to wrap around the brush as well as long hair would.

Boar bristle brushes for a long time have been considered to be the most effective and healthy type of bristle for hair maintenance.  They're gentler than most other bristles, so for ladies who suffer from breakage or shedding, it might be worth investing in a brush that is either entirely boar-bristle, or a mixture of boar-bristle and another material. If your hair is pretty easy to maintain, go forth with whichever brush lets you achieve all your hair goals.

The black Kitsch Ceramic Rollers on a white background

Kitsch Ceramic Rollers

Instead of packing a large curling wand, Devillier suggests opting for a travel-friendly eight-pack of Kitsch's Ceramic Rollers. "When I want big, fluffy hair but don't have time for a curling iron, I'll blow out my hair and pop these ceramic rollers right in," she says, adding that they work best on hot hair. "As they cool down, your hair will cool and form into the shape of the roller."

Devillier is also a major fan of the GHD Flight Travel Dryer for its compact size that fits into any of her carry-ons and mighty hair-drying power. "It's also lightweight and has the amazing GHD technology of cooling down when too close to the hair," she says.

The 23 Best Brushes for Soft, Knot-Free Hair

With picks for every hair type and length.

women's travel hair brush

Byrdie / Lecia Landis

While some people can get by with just a comb , brushes are crucial for anyone with long, thick hair. But as hairstylist Kat Savano notes, they're not all created equal. Your hair type and desired style will determine what kind of hairbrush you need. As a rule of thumb, she explains, the more bristles a brush has, the more control (aka tension) you get. The fewer bristles, the more airflow you get, so less control but a faster blowout . There are also other considerations to be made, like the type of brush and the type of bristles. (More on that later.)

With so many options to choose from, we conducted hours of research on the best hairbrushes, evaluating each on design, bristle type, and brush shape. We also considered if the brush can be used on wet, dry hair, or both, and also, the different hair types each brush is best suited for. After consulting with a few hairstylists, we landed on the following best in show.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, fromm the intuition glosser boar bristle brush.

Bristle formation distributes oils and massages scalp

Real boar bristles

Leaves hair shiny

Not ideal for very thick hair

Hair Type: Straight, wavy, curly, fine, medium | Bristle Material: Boar | Shape: Paddle | Wet or Dry: Both

Fromm's Intuition Glossar Brush checks both the boxes our experts recommend: boar bristles and a strong handle. The natural fibers are positioned in a porcupine-style formation to help distribute the oils produced by your scalp while loosening up debris. This brush also has longer pins throughout that work to massage your scalp. A cushioned base minimizes tugging while you pull it through your hair, and the wide paddle gives you more coverage with each stroke.

Best Budget

Conair velvet touch hair brush.

Eliminates knots without pain

Doesn’t pick up a lot of strands

Lightweight feel

Somewhat small

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Plastic | Shape: Oval | Wet or Dry: Both

For those on a budget, we recommend Conair's Velvet Touch Brush. This lightweight brush received nothing but praise from our home tester, who said it gets knots out without unnecessary tugging. It doesn't pick up a lot of strands, which one might think is a bad thing, however, given that this brush is smaller, we think it's a good choice for anyone who wants to give different areas of their hair individualized attention (which can be important when trying to untangle knots). Also nice: Due to its plastic construction, it works on both wet and dry hair.

Best Splurge

Leonor greyl natural boar bristle brush.

Stylist-recommended

Hair Type: Straight, wavy, fine, thick | Bristle Material: Boar | Shape: Flat oval | Wet or Dry: Dry

"For brushing dry hair and advancing natural oils down the hair strand, I like a flat brush like the Leonor Greyl Natural Boar Bristle Brush," says Savano. Because of how well it distributes oils, it leaves hair super shiny. It's got boar bristles (so it should only be used on dry hair) and it's ideal for folks with straight, wavy, fine, or thick hair. Oh, and it looks luxe on any vanity.

Best Paddle

T3 smooth paddle brush.

Heat-resistant bristles

Easy to grip

Might be too big for those with short hair

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Paddle | Wet or Dry: Both

Designed to work with all hair types, T3's take on the paddle brush has a broad base, a cushioned body, and heat-resistant bristles that gently detangle and smooth wet or dry hair. The soft, non-slip handle also provides a nice grip. It's worth noting that because it has such a large body, it might be too big for those with short hair.

It's a 10 Haircare Miracle Round Brush

Tourmaline barrel

Aerated holes

Not ideal for dry hair

Hair Type: Straight, wavy, curly | Bristle Material: Nylon, boar | Shape: Round | Wet or Dry: Wet

This brush comes in five different sizes and has aerating holes at the top of the brush as well as throughout the barrel. The core of the brush is a tourmaline metal, which heats up and acts almost like a hot iron, which can be helpful when styling hair. It's also lightweight by round brush standards, offering a comfortable fit in your hand.

Best for Thick Hair

Denman d4 original styler 9 row brush.

Extra-long pins

Separates wet hair

Slick handle

Hair Type: Thick, long | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Curved rectangular | Wet or Dry: Both

Thick hair? The Denman D4 has your name on it. Featuring nine rows of extra-long nylon pins on a long, lightweight, rounded base, this brush effortlessly separates, shapes, and defines even the thickest hair. This is a super sleek pick, which you'll no doubt want to proudly display on your nightstand or vanity.

Best for Curly Hair

Rizos curls pink detangling flexi brush for curly hair.

 Amazon

Unique design

Minimizes tugging

Hair Type: Curly, coily, wavy | Bristle Material: Plastic | Shape: Pronged | Wet or Dry: Wet

The Flexi Brush was designed specifically for curly hair . It's lightweight, gliding through your knots without pulling on your roots and causing unnecessary fallout. What's more, the non-slip rubber handle gives you a solid grip while you work out the tangles.

Best for Type 4 Hair

Felicia leatherwood detangler brush.

Flexible bristles

Designed specifically for curly hair

Uncomfortable handle

Hair Type: Coily, curly, textured, wavy, medium, thick | Bristle Material: Plastic | Shape: Rectangular | Wet or Dry: Wet

If you're working with coily hair , this lightweight detangler brush might be your best bet. The flexible bristles are placed in wide rows to help them glide through wet hair without tugging at your scalp or causing tension and breakage. Our only gripe is that the handle isn't the most comfortable.

Best for Extensions

Drybar super lemon drop detangling brush.

Gentle on hair extensions

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Oval | Wet or Dry: Both

We'll let you in on a little secret: Drybar makes the best brush for hair extensions . Featuring flexible bristles and a soft cushioned base, the Super Lemon Drop is designed to gently detangle wet or dry hair with minimal tugging. It's somewhat small, so those with lots of hair might be brushing for a while, but those who want to be extra careful with their extensions might enjoy how petite it is.

Best for All Hair Types

Briogeo vegan boar bristle hair brush.

Massages scalp

Eco-friendly packaging

Works on wet or dry hair of all types

Tricky to clean

We love this pretty lilac brush from Briogeo, which features vegan bristles with soft ballpoint tips to detangle all hair types, wet or dry. It provides the same smoothing benefits boar-style brushes have while remaining cruelty-free. The tips work to gently massage the scalp and detangle every strand they come in contact with, regardless of hair type and texture.

Best for Dry Hair

The hair edit finish & shine boar bristle brush.

Not ideal for wet hair

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Boar, nylon | Shape: Oval | Wet or Dry: Dry

This blush-pink brush by The Hair Edit was designed for dry hair. Featuring real boar bristles and ball-tipped nylon pins, it helps distribute your hair's natural oils, tames flyaways, and enhances shine, while giving you a nice scalp massage.

Best for Wet Hair

Wet brush original detangler.

Can be used in the shower

Easy to clean

The plastic bristles aren't the highest quality

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Plastic | Shape: Oval | Wet or Dry: Formulated specifically for wet hair, but can be used on dry strands, too

When you step out of the shower (or are in the middle of one), reach for the Wet Brush. This clever and lightweight detangler works to gently remove knots and separate your hair without tugging at your roots or causing hair breakage . It works wonderfully with hair masks and other deep conditioners while being super easy to clean afterward.

Best In-Shower

Pattern by tracee ellis ross shower brush.

Defines natural curl pattern

Can be used with hair masks and conditioning treatments

Not very durable

Hair Type: Curly, wavy, textured, thick | Bristle Material: Plastic | Shape: Curved rectangular | Wet or Dry: Wet

Pattern's Shower Brush has long, comb-like bristles that effortlessly separate and detangle your wet hair while defining your natural curl pattern. The comfy handle also has a hole on the end so you can hang it up next to your loofah. Byrdie editor Olivia Hancock shares that this brush makes detangling her thick, long curls a pain-free process. "The well-made bristles allow the brush to gently and effectively work through even the toughest tangles in my hair," she says. "The brush also does an excellent job of clumping curls, which helps me achieve incredible definition."

Best Detangler

Tangle teezer original detangling brush.

Not ideal for curly hair

Hair Type: Medium, straight, wavy | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Contoured | Wet or Dry: Both

The Tangle Teezer earned a 4.8 out of 5 overall score from our tester, who said it passed through her knots without tugging and enhanced her hair's natural shine. She also liked the lightweight, comfy hold and easy-to-clean design. For more on her experience with the brush, check out the full review .

Byrdie / Sarah Wu

Best for Blow-Drying

Olivia garden ceramic + ion thermal hairbrush.

Ceramic barrel with aerated holes

Eight sizes

Bristles can be scratchy against skin and clothing

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Round | Wet or Dry: Wet

Savano recommends a ceramic barrel when blow-drying, like this thermal option from Olivia Garden. Available in eight sizes, it has sturdy bristles (which, admittedly, can be scratchy against skin and clothes), large holes for maximum airflow, a retractable sectioning pick, and an ergonomic handle.

Best Multi-Purpose

Kitsch kitsch dual edge brush and comb.

Works as edge brush and for grooming brows and lashes

Lightweight

Compact size

Not as sturdy as some other products

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Rectangular | Wet or Dry: Either

This two-for-one product offers a brush on one side and a comb on the other, so it's kind of the best of both worlds. Use the comb to lay baby hairs and edges (or groom brows and lashes) or create a part and sweep through with the brush to smooth flyaways.

Best for Medium-Length Hair

Mason pearson mason pearson handy bristle hair brush for medium length hair.

Mason Pearson

Well-made and luxurious

Easy to maneuver

Comfortable

Bristles can be sharp at first

Hair Type: Mid-length and fine hair | Bristle Material: Boar | Shape: Oval | Wet or Dry: Either

This luxurious brush tames frizz and flyaways with six rings of stiff boar bristle tufts. We love the long handle, which allows the user to brush to great lengths (literally). And while it's expensive, it will likely stand the test of time, thanks in part to the cleaning brush that comes with it and helps you keep your hairbrush in the best possible condition.

Read Full Review : The Mason Pearson Pocket Bristle & Nylon Hairbrush BN4 Feels Like a Mini Massage

Best for Thin Hair

Crown affair the brush no. 001.

Great for fine or thinning hair

Glides through hair without tugging or breaking

Volumizes as it brushes

Might not be ideal for thick hair

Hair Type: All, but best for thin | Bristle Material: Nylon and boar | Shape: Oval | Wet or Dry: Either

All hair types will benefit from this boar- and nylon-bristled brush, but commerce writer Caitlyn Martyn says it's exceptional for those with thin hair who need volume. "I've tried so many brushes and this is the one I keep coming back to," she explains. "It's gentle on my fine strands—so it won't cause breakage— and it effectively detangles and volumizes my waves." It's something of an investment, but as Caitlyn points out, it's a solid choice for those in need of something that won't be too hard on their head or hair.

Aveda Wooden Paddle Brush

Lightweight and easy to hold

Scalp-stimulating bristles

Natural design and aesthetic

Bristle tips may fall off over time

Hair Type: All | Bristle Material: Nylon | Shape: Paddle | Wet or Dry: Either

If you like the look and feel of a wooden brush, this one from Aveda has your name on it. Suitable for all hair types, it's lightweight and easy to hold with a large paddle and scalp-stimulating bristles that work to detangle hair, wet or dry.

Best Ceramic

Moroccanoil ceramic paddle brush.

Speeds drying time

Helps smooth flyaways

Prevents heat damage

Bristles may warp under high heat

If you need something for at-home blowouts, go with the Moroccanoil Paddle Brush. Like many hair dryers and flat irons, the paddle and handle are made of ceramic to help speed up drying time, prevent damage, smooth flyaways, and leave you with super-sleek locks. Just a heads up, medium blow-drying heat is best, as the nylon bristles might warp if they get too hot.

What to Look For in a Hairbrush

  • Hair Type: When shopping for a brush, be sure to keep hair type in mind. Thin hair can benefit from a boar bristle brush, which helps ensure hair doesn't snag or frizz. Curly hairand thicker hair types will also appreciate boar bristles, which are more flexible than synthetic and therefore avoid tugging on the hair. Those with damaged hair should also look for bristles that are soft, which will help avoid further damage.
  • Shape, size, and design: When it comes to shopping for hairbrushes, hairstylist and salon owner Anthony Nader recommends first making sure the brush shape will fit your specific hair needs. “If you want to achieve more volume, aim for using a medium to large round brush,” he says. However, if you’re looking to achieve a quick and effortless blowout with minimal drying time, he recommends investing in a large, flat cushioned paddle brush. “The larger the brush, the more area you can cover in a shorter amount of time,” he says. Size also matters: Bigger paddles and longer arms will ensure more coverage and comfortability when brushing long hair. On the other hand, smaller styles will be better for those with short hair (or those who are looking for a tool to use on the go).
  • Bristles: When it comes to bristle material, Nader is a big fan of brushes made of boar hair. “These are soft, so your strands will glide through them with ease,” he says. “They help reduce the amount of tugging on strands, which can cause hair breakage, and they're fab for promoting blood flow which is beneficial for natural hair growth .” Nylon can also be effective and some tools mix both nylon with boar. Plastic is good, too, though it won't hold up as well and can cause added friction to strands.

When it comes to brushing, Nader’s rule is never to brush more than twice a day. “Any more than that, and you’re asking for trouble,” he says. He explains that over-brushing causes the sebaceous glands in the scalp to work overtime, leading to oily roots and the need to wash hair more frequently.

Experts recommend that hairbrushes be replaced every six months and cleaned at least once a month. To clean a brush, mix a clarifying shampoo with water and baking soda, and allow the brush to soak in the mixture for 30 minutes.

According to Nader, cleaning your hairbrush shouldn’t be a complicated process. “I just mix warm water with clarifying shampoo and let the brushes soak for an hour; that way, all the buildup can disappear," he says. "Then, I rinse them in cool water and lay them out in the sun to dry.”

Theresa Holland is a freelance commerce writer covering haircare, skincare, and makeup at Byrdie. She interviewed two experts for this story, compiling their product recs and insight into the best materials and designs:

  • Anthony Nader is a celebrity hairstylist and the salon owner of Raw Anthony Nader in Sydney, Australia.
  • Kat Savano is a hairstylist based in the California Bay Area.

The Wet Brush, a GH editor favorite, is designed with flexible bristles that won't pull on strands . In our Beauty Lab review, testers found that it easily tames tangles and unknots wet hair in a breeze. It can be used on any hair type and on wet or dry hair. You can even get it in mini versions . "To detangle wet hair after a shower, choose a brush with widely-spaced, synthetic bristles for gentle brushing," notes Chiara Butler, GH Beauty Lab Analyst.

• Shape: Oval • Bristles : Nylon, ball-tipped • Hair type : All

This rubber-gripped hair brush is ideal for daily use, with an easy-to-hold handle and ball-tipped bristles to avoid snagging your hair. For just over $3, this everyday-use brush can be used for detangling, styling and more. "I have thick long hair," one reviewer writes. "Used to use a paddle brush but unfortunately it wouldn't get through much. This one definitely does."

• Shape: Curved rectangular • Bristles : Nylon, ball-tipped • Hair type : All

Another GH Beauty Lab favorite, this detangling brush has both nylon and boar bristles for added smoothness and shine . With a flexible paddle and ionic bristles, the brush gently glides through tangles and knots to prevent breakage . GH Beauty Lab Director Birnur Aral notes, "I like the soft and sturdy handle, the flexible brush head that moves and separates as needed when detangling."

• Shape: Paddle • Bristles : Boar and nylon, ball-tipped • Hair type : All

ion Professional Boar & Nylon Cushion Brush

This cushiony brush will help beat frizz and static thanks to a combination of nylon and boar bristles, which help seal the hair's cuticle and reduce static. Use this before or after heat styling to add shine, detangle and de-frizz. As an added bonus, it feels great on the scalp. "It is one of my favorite brushes. I've been a hairdresser over 45 years. I bought it for my sister and friends, great for scalp stimulation," writes one reviewer.

• Shape: Oval • Bristles : Boar and nylon • Hair type : All

Paddle brushes are a great staple for all hair types and lengths, but work especially well on longer hair since they can handle larger swathes of hair at once . This ghd brush has a wide paddle, ergonomic handle and nice weight, so it won't feel like it's going to snap no matter how thick or tangled your hair is. It's also perfect for helping speed up a sleek blow dry. "The brush creates a beautiful blowout and has significantly cut down on the time it took me to dry my hair using a round brush," one reviewer raves.

• Shape: Paddle • Bristles : Nylon, ball-tipped • Hair type : All

If you’re worried about thinning spots, you'll want a brush that helps add volume to your hair. Great to use when blow-drying, this brush's vented design means you can easily direct the airflow to get extra height and body , while also speeding up drying time. "I searched hard for a brush for thinning hair and discovered this one," writes one reviewer. "There are not as many bristles as you find on regular hairbrushes, so when you brush, there isn't the usual pulling on your scalp as you're accustomed to, which is exactly what I need."

This is the ultimate luxury hair brush. Yes, it’s an investment, but according to reviewers, it could be the only brush you buy for a decade or more. Not only does it gently detangle hair, but its genuine boar bristles are the best at working with your hair's natural oils. As you brush from root to tip, the oils are distributed and you're left with shiny hair (not just greasy roots). "I can feel the difference on my scalp and along most of the length of my hair," writes one reviewer. "My hair is dyed and damaged from chlorine and heat from styling. It tends to break easily but since I started using this brush MUCH less of it has fallen out and broken."

• Shape: Oval • Bristles : Boar • Hair type : Fine to medium hair

This hair brush is one of the GH Beauty Assistant's go-to choices. It gently detangles and the larger size also helps it take on long, thick hair . "My husband could not live without this brush for his long full hair," one reviewer writes.

• Shape: Paddle • Bristles : Nylon • Hair type : All

Our editors recommend love the cult-fave Tangle Teaser to detangle curls in the shower. Not only is it designed to be gentle on knots for less breakage, it’s perfect for evenly-distributing conditioner too ! "This is the only brush that can detangle my thick hair and dense curls," says GH Institute Deputy Editor Jessica Teich . "The thin pin bristles easily slip through matted knots and make quick work of untangling curls. I won't even travel without it."

• Shape: Kidney bean • Bristles : Nylon • Hair type : All

Harry Josh Pro Tools products always impress in our Beauty Lab evaluations , and this brush is no different. Harry Josh Pro Tools brushes are a favorite of GH Beauty Director April Franzino for their gentle yet effective detangling abilities. Reviewers agree that it's great at smoothing hair: “ this brush gives a solid rake and works well for smoothing/sleek styling, " one reviewer notes.

Y.S Park G-Series Curl Shine Styler Round Brush

G-Series Curl Shine Styler Round Brush

This brush is more than just stylish: The wooden vented handle gives better airflow and a more comfortable grip, making it ideal for heat styling and a hairstylist favorite. This brush helps to "smooth out my clients' hair perfectly with a combination of boar bristle and heat resistant nylon pins," says Taylor. "The boar bristles smooth the hair’s cuticle while the nylon pins grab and pick up sections of hair with ease."

• Shape: Round • Bristles : Boar and nylon • Hair type : Curly, fine

Drybar Full Pint Medium Round Brush

Full Pint Medium Round Brush

Drybar knows blowouts and bouncy styles. That’s why we like the brand's round brush for at-home styling. Designed with a vented ceramic barrel, it's great for blow-drying all hair lengths, especially long hair . This brush "is the perfect size for my long, naturally straight hair," writes one reviewer. "Good handle length and barrel grip provides the right tension when drying. Adds nice shine, too!"

• Shape: Round • Bristles : Nylon • Hair type : All

CAMRYN'S BFF Camryn's BFF Gentle Edges Brush

Camryn's BFF Gentle Edges Brush

For less than $3, this brush is a must-have any time you’re rocking a sleek pony or topknot . Add a bit of gel to the bristles to easily smooth your edges (a.k.a. those little baby hairs framing your face) for a pro-quality look. It’s also great for taming flyaways on the tops and sides. "What sold me was the double-ended feature," writes one reviewer. "Both useful and necessary for kinky, curly hair."

• Shape: Rectangular • Bristles : Boar • Hair type : All

How we choose the best hair brushes

linebreak

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests the top-performing hair products and tools that make taming your hair less of a chore. When the Beauty Lab tests hair brushes for our annual GH Beauty Awards , we try the products in our Lab and then send samples to our panel of consumer testers across the country. Our testers of all ages, with all hair types, textures and lengths use the brushes in their normal routine for a set amount of time, and follow up with honest feedback on what they like and what they don't like. After tallying up the results from consumer and Lab tests, we settle on the best of the best.

What to look for when shopping for the best hair brushes

dog

✔️ Size: Decide if you want more volume or more curl in your hair, and pick a brush size based on that. "When picking out a brush for your specific hair style, remember: The bigger the diameter of the brush, the more volume and less curl or movement in the hair," says Taylor. "The smaller the diameter of the brush, the less volume and more curl or movement. "

✔️ Bristles: Boar bristles help make hair shiny and keep it healthy. Boar bristles create "a shine to your hair by closing the hair strand's cuticle helping the hair reflect light," says Taylor, whereas nylon bristles are helpful for detangling thick and coarse hair. "Nylon bristles provide enough stiffness to brush through thick hair," adds Butler.

✔️ Handle: Consider the ergonomics of the brush. You can choose a few different handle styles: Plastic, wooden or rubber. "For a smooth, perfect, gripped handle, I prefer the wooden handle out of the three," says Taylor, though a rubber handle also provides a solid grip and comfort while brushing, and plastic handles tend to be a more affordable choice.

✔️ Shape: For taking care of long or thick hair, " paddle brushes are great because they cover a wide surface area," says Butler. "They also tend to have a cushion under the bristles that flexes as you brush, providing more comfort on the head." Rectangular brushes are similar to paddle brushes and can achieve the same goals. Round brushes are the go-to for styling as they come in a variety of barrel sizes so you can create various looks.

✔️ Use/routine: If you're brushing wet hair, look for widely-spaced bristles or vented brushes. Your hair is in its most fragile state when it's wet, Butler notes, "so you don’t want the strands to snag on closely-spaced bristles." However, if you're using a brush on dry hair, you have your pick of many different brushes since the hair is no longer as fragile. When looking for a hairbrush to use with your hair dryer, round brushes are usually the best choice as they help create volume and bounce when you wrap your hair around them. "Also consider brushes with vented or ceramic-coated barrels, which are designed to distribute heat from the hair dryer and dry hair more quickly," says Butler.

✔️ Hair type: "I like boar bristle for fine hair because the soft, flexible bristles can brush fine hair well," says Butler. Meanwhile, paddle brushes are great for thick hair because the bristles are more stiff than boar bristle, she adds.

13 Travel Hair Dryers That'll Give You Quality Blowouts No Matter Your Location

Because doing your hair shouldn't be a hassle on vacation.

best travel hair dryers

Chances are, the hair dryer in your hotel room or Airbnb is just not gonna cut it, and if you're trying to pack light (ha, who are we kidding?), lugging along your favorite hair dryer might benefit from a little Honey, I Shrunk the Kids magic.

Luckily, many reputable brands offer smaller-sized hair dryers that boast carry-on-friendly features like foldable handles and dual voltage for sleek styling overseas, and these tools don't skimp out on power—nowadays, many travel blow dryers on the market offer high wattage for quick, frizz-free styling so you won't have to stress about your strands while on PTO.

Below, find the best travel hair dryers that are equally as compact as they are effective.

GHD stands for Good Hair Day, and you're bound to have a bouncy blowout that lasts if you stash this stellar travel hair dryer in your carry-on. It's 47 percent lighter and 25 percent smaller than the full-sized GHD Air while boasting 77 percent of the power. Professional hairstylist Laurabeth Cabott loves the GHD travel dryer because it has a high wattage, dual voltage, and can be folded for traveling. Plus, it comes with a durable travel case, so you can rest assured your dryer won't get damaged even if you chuck it in your checked luggage.

This small-but-mighty travel dryer comes in under $25 yet delivers just as much power (1,200 watts, to be exact) as many other higher-priced hair dryers on the market. It doesn't come with any nice-to-haves like a cool-shot button to lock in your 'do, but it gets the job done with two heat and speed settings as well as dual voltage, which deems it suitable for international travel. Plus, it's available on Amazon Prime, so last-minute shoppers can have it delivered to their door before departure time (because we'd all rather avoid a frizzy hair fiasco on vacation).

The Dyson Supersonic comes with five different styling attachments—including the flyaway attachment, diffuser, and wide-tooth comb—that help you create perfect frizz-free styles wherever you go. And all the attachments are magnetic, so you won't have to fumble around when switching them. The Supersonic weighs under 2 pounds, has a 9-foot-long cable (which comes in handy when your hotel room only has one working outlet), boasts four different heat settings, and a cold shot button to lock in the shine. But what we love most about it is that it dries your hair lightening-fast (think: 15 minutes versus 45 on coarse hair)—and anything that saves this much time is totally worth the investment. Just keep in mind that the Dyson Supersonic doesn't have dual voltage, so it's only suitable for travel within the U.S. (unless you buy a converter to use along with it).

This metallic blue BaByliss Pro hair dryer isn't only easy on the eyes, it also produces some seriously good 'dos. Users rave that it's powerful for its size and has great longevity, so it's bound to last you through many trips around the sun. Its ultra-thin concentrator nozzle means you'll be able to smooth those strands to perfection, although this dryer doesn't come with a cool shot button. But for the unbeatable $35 price tag, you really can't go wrong.

Now you can dry your hair anywhere: on the road, in bed, or in a hotel room without a mirror-adjacent power outlet. This cordless dryer is literally a dream because a full charge lasts you two hours and it's equipped with infrared technology that dries your hair quicker and sleeker with minimal damage. Plus, it comes with a dryer head, concentrator, dryer battery pack, charging base, and charging cable all nicely packed up in a cute travel bag. Just make sure to buy a voltage converter for the hair dryer charger if you're traveling internationally to avoid frying your Volo (which would be such a shame because it is so pricey).

The T3 Afar will become your ultimate travel buddy thanks to its dual voltage converter that switches automatically when plugged in and its powerful 1,500-wattage that dries hair almost instantly. Not only is it very lightweight (about 12 ounces), but it also easily folds up for quick storage in even the smallest of suitcases. It comes in a pretty vegan leather pouch that protects your dryer from scratches and scuffs. The long 9-foot cord is also a major plus, and with all these bells and whistles, the T3 might be worth the higher price tag.

If power is what you're after, you'll want to purchase this budget-friendly, dual-voltage dryer from Revlon. It packs an impressive 1,875 watts, which is what many full-sized dryers boast, as well as A+ airflow, which means you'll achieve the fastest blowout ever. The handle folds in and it's very compact. Not only that, but this Revlon dryer has two heat settings and a cool shot button as well as ceramic coating to keep frizz at bay. And that's all for under $20. However, some users complain that this dryer didn't last them too long.

If you and your travel buddies are usually on different schedules, and you'd rather get hairstyling out of the way before starting your day, you'll want to invest in this ultra-quiet Llano travel dryer. Users rave that it's whisper-quiet, reaching up to just 58 decibels (for reference, the average hair dryer produces a noise level of around 85 decibels), so you can trust it not to wake up the later risers in your crew. And this collapsible, lightweight dryer doesn't compromise in strength: The impressive 1,400-watt motor means you'll get a fast, shiny blowout in no time.

Consider this the travel-friendly version of the cult favorite Dry Bar Double Shot Blow Dryer Brush. Unlike Dry Bar's version, this Plavogue Hair Dryer Brush has dual voltage so you can take it anywhere in the world. The oval brush ensures each strand gets hit with hot air for instant smoothness, and it helps add volume to your roots or curl out your ends for more bounce and movement. This pick is perfect for travel since you won't have to pack a separate brush along with your blow dryer. Talk about a space-saver! But some users note that the handle is wide and large and may not feel comfortable in your hand after a while.

"The Gamma Pro is super small and can be stored in luggage easily," Cabott says. At 10 ounces, it's about as lightweight as your iPhone, and packs in the power, producing sleek results thanks to three different speeds and temperatures as well as a cool shot button. This light travel dryer is ideal for folks with voluminous hair that takes a while to dry as the ergonomic design makes it easy and comfortable to use. But because it doesn't have dual voltage, you'll have to buy a converter to safely use it while traveling in other countries.

7Magic Fast-Drying Hair Dryer

Fast-Drying Hair Dryer

When you've got reservations booked and places to be, the last thing you want to do is spend precious minutes smoothing out your hair. That's where the 7Magic ionic hair dryer comes in: It cuts your drying time significantly, requiring just 3 to 5 minutes for medium-length hair and up to 8 minutes for long, thick hair. It's great for carrying in your gym bag or purse since it weighs just under one pound, and it boasts one of the slimmest designs we've seen as well as a foldable handle for compact storage. But unless you plan to buy a voltage converter, you should leave this dryer at home if you're traveling to countries outside the U.S. and Canada as this tool doesn't have dual voltage.

Drybar Baby Buttercup Travel Blow-Dryer

Baby Buttercup Travel Blow-Dryer

Drybar's Baby Buttercup dryer's compact, lightweight design and collapsible handle make it super portable and perfect for travel or on-the-go styling. And with its super-cute logo travel bag scribbled with a cheeky slogan, you'll want to take this tool everywhere. Despite its small size, it delivers powerful airflow with two heat and speed settings, as well as a cool shot button. And with its dual voltage feature, it can be used internationally without using a voltage converter. Any traveler can feel confident bringing this travel dryer along for the ride, as it's suitable for naturally wavy, curly, and straight hair. But one thing that's worth noting is that some users found that the handle easily broke and they didn't get much longevity out of this dryer.

It's a 10 Miracle Mini Travel Professional Hair Dryer Kit

Miracle Mini Travel Professional Hair Dryer Kit

This hair-drying kit comes with everything you need to achieve super smooth hair. The mini hair dryer is powerful at 1,200 watts, has a dual voltage switch for international travel, and is lightweight and compact. You'll also get two 2-ounce shampoo and conditioner bottles that are TSA-friendly, so you can travel with this kit in your carry-on or purse. It's worth noting that the hair dryer's handle isn't foldable, so it might require some Tetris skills to fit around the contents of your luggage.

How we chose the best travel hair dryers

squiggle

For weeks, Women's Health editors, have researched the best travel hair dryers to buy online. We also consulted hairstylist Laurabeth Cabott on features to look for in a travel hair dryer and vetted thousands of online reviews to find the very best options available online.

What kind of features should you look for in a travel hair dryer?

faq squiggle

  • Compact, lightweight design: If you're looking into buying a travel hair dryer, it's probably because your full-size one is too big to carry with you. Cabbott recommends buying a travel dryer that weighs less than 3 pounds and has a foldable handle for easy storage. "You'll also want to make sure the dryer is durable, so it won’t get damaged easily if you’re storing it in a checked luggage bag," she adds.
  • High wattage to cut down on blow-dry time: The higher the wattage, the quicker your blowout. Cabbott says the ideal and most common wattage (aka power) for a blow dryer is 1,200. So anything lower than that won't dry your hair fast enough (translation: you'll have less time for the fun stuff).
  • Dual voltage for international travel: For stress-free styling abroad, make sure your dryer is equipped with dual voltage capability. This allows the dryer to work in different countries with varying electrical systems (FYI, the standard voltage in the United States and Canada is 110-120 volts, while many other countries operate on 220-240 volts). A dual-voltage hair dryer eliminates the need for a voltage converter or transformer. All you have to do is simply switch your dryer to the appropriate voltage setting, and start styling. But you still might need an adapter plug to fit different types of power outlets.

What are the best ways to use a hair dryer without damaging your hair?

best brushes for fine hair

Sorry gals, but hitting your hair with hot hair straight out of the shower isn't doing your 'do any good. "The best way to refrain from damaging hair with heat is to make sure your hair is at least 80% dry before using any hot tool, brush, or attachment," Cabbott says.

Instead of waiting forever for it to air-dry, you can use your blow dryer on the cool setting to dry your hair faster, and once it's almost fully dry, you can then use the hotter temperatures to style it to perfection.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

women's travel hair brush

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

women's travel hair brush

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

women's travel hair brush

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

women's travel hair brush

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

women's travel hair brush

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

women's travel hair brush

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

women's travel hair brush

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

women's travel hair brush

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

women's travel hair brush

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

women's travel hair brush

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

women's travel hair brush

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

women's travel hair brush

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

women's travel hair brush

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

women's travel hair brush

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
