A Complete Guide to the Lockers at Universal Orlando

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy .

Are you wondering the ins and outs of understanding the lockers at Universal Orlando, as well as which ones are free vs. require money?

In planning your visit to Universal Orlando, you may have read or heard about the need to store your belongings in lockers at Universal Orlando while you go on rides.

Perhaps this has left you with many questions, as it did me, before your first visit.

In this article, we’ll explain the different types of lockers at Universal Orlando, where they are, how and when to use them, and how to avoid having to pay for them.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means that we may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link.   For more info, see disclosure.

Why are There Lockers at Universal Orlando?

Though it may seem odd to dedicate an entire article to explaining the lockers at Universal Orlando, trust me when I tell you that understanding the Universal Studios lockers is absolutely essential in avoiding confusion and frustration at the Universal theme parks.

Unlike at Walt Disney World where you can take your bags on all rides, Universal requires you to store your bags and belongings in a locker before you board most rides.

This is due to the simple fact that several of the rides at Islands of Adventure and rides at Universal Studios are either fast, thrilling, highly motion-simulated, or have upside-down twists and turns that will risk you losing your items should they be brought onboard.

It’s best to figure out where and how to store your gear ahead of time in order to avoid being turned away at the entrance of a ride to then have to backtrack and find a locker.

Learn all about the lockers at Universal Orlando from Top U.S. Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan! Click here now!

Types of Lockers at Universal Orlando

All of Universal Orlando’s lockers are automated and use a biometric or ticket-scanning locking system.

Both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure offers three different types of these lockers inside the theme parks:

  • Complimentary ride lockers (short-term)
  • Pre-paid ride lockers (short-term)

All-day lockers

Complimentary ride lockers.

Complimentary (free) ride lockers are available at the entrances to several rides that require that no backpacks and belongings are brought onto the ride.

Large locker bays are located adjacent to the ride to accommodate this requirement.

Sections of the locker bay that have available lockers are indicated by a green light as pictured above. A red light indicates that that section of the locker bay is full.

The lockers are utilized by scanning your park ticket at a green-light kiosk, and an available locker door will swing open. After placing your belongings inside, the door will automatically lock when closed.

You can retrieve your items when getting off of the ride by repeating the same process: scan your park ticket at your assigned locker bay kiosk and the door to your locker will automatically swing open.

The biggest thing to note about complimentary ride lockers is that they are quite small.

They measure 14 in x 5.5 in x 16.9 inches to be exact.

This means that the free lockers are best suited for fanny packs, small backpacks or sling bags (be sure to measure them!), and loose articles such as sunglasses, water bottles, Smartphones, and Harry Potter wands.

Large backpacks and bulky items will not fit into the free lockers and you will be forced to pay for a locker at each of the rides that require storage.

Pro Tip: In order to avoid having to pay for lockers, limit what you bring inside of the park to only that of which will fit into a fanny pack. See our list of what we bring to Universal . For our family of 5, we easily get by with just having a fanny pack and a small sling bag for water bottles, and never had to pay for a locker during our entire visit.

Rides that Require Lockers at Universal Orlando

The following is a list of the rides at both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure that do not allow any personal belongings to be brought on the rides.

These are the rides that offer free lockers adjacent to the ride entrance.

Universal Studios Florida

  • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack
  • Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Universal’s Island of Adventure

  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  • The Incredible Hulk Coaster
Pro Tip: As another curveball, fanny packs are allowed to be worn on all of the rides above except for the Hulk Coaster and Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket. Beware that team members will ensure that the fanny pack is securely buckled around your waist and does not interfere with the safety restraint of the ride vehicle as you get on. This is another great reason to only bring a fanny pack into the parks, as you can avoid lockers altogether, except for on two rides.

Learn all about the lockers at Universal Orlando from Top U.S. Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan! Click here now!

Pre-paid ride lockers

If your backpack and/or other items are too large to fit into the complimentary lockers, you will be forced to have to rent a pre-paid locker.

Similar to the complimentary lockers, larger-sized lockers (12 in x 13 in x 16.9 in) are located at the entrances to all of the rides requiring the storage of belongings.

They can be rented for $2, cash or credit card, during the posted wait time. Pre-paid lockers cost an additional $3 per 30 minutes, with a $20 per day maximum.

This means that if a ride has a wait time of 60 minutes and you end up trying to trick the system by leaving your things in there for 120 minutes to go on other rides, you will be charged extra when it comes time to remove your belongings.

A Note About Water Rides

Complimentary lockers are not offered at Universal’s water rides.

Though Universal’s water rides (Jurassic Park River Adventure, Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, and Dudley Do-Rights Ripsaw Falls) do allow personal belongings on rides, only pre-paid lockers are available if you’re worried about your stuff getting wet.

Pre-paid, single-time use lockers cost $4 during the posted wait time and an additional $3 per 30 minutes, to a maximum of $20 per day.

Pro Tip: When it comes to water rides at Universal, again, limit your belongings to a fanny pack that can be worn around your waist. In addition, wear a rain poncho on water rides so that you/it doesn’t get wet and you won’t have to pay for a locker.

Universal Orlando offers all-day lockers on a first-come, first-serve basis.

They are located just beyond the turnstiles after entering the park, as pictured above.

Also good to note is that guests have unlimited access to all-day lockers during the course of the day. In other words, they can be opened and re-locked by the original user as many times as you like during your visit.

To rent a locker, you must first approach the rental kiosk, pay for your locker via cash or credit card, and are then assigned a locker number. You will be asked to enter a six-digit code to use in the event that you forget your locker number.

Once your payment is processed, don’t forget to grab the receipt with your locker number. Then, your unit will automatically unlock.

Learn all about the lockers at Universal Orlando from Top U.S. Family Travel Blog, Travel With A Plan! Click here now!

Large lockers measuring 12” x 13” x 16.9” are available to rent at Universal Studios and Universal’s Islands of Adventure for $10 per day.

They are big enough to fit large backpacks, a diaper bag, or multiple purses.

Family-size lockers measuring 12” x 16.25” x 16.9” are available at Universal Studios only, for $15 per day.

These lockers are good for multiple families wanting to share storage.

Though there are not many family-size lockers available, they are very underutilized and you can always seem to find one that is available.

Additional planning tip: Lockers can be found in the Rainforest Village, River Village, and Wave Village of Universal’s Volcano Bay.

There are three different locker sizes available: mini ($9), regular ($13), and family ($16).

Universal Child Swap Area

Along with our 45+ quick tips for first-time visitors to Universal Orlando, we have one more trick up our sleeve to avoid having to utilize paid lockers.

Each ride has a family room called Child Swap, where one member of your party can wait with the little ones while the rest of your party rides a ride.

Once they are finished, guests can switch places so whoever rode can stay with the kids, and the adult(s) who sat out can then go on the ride without having to wait in line again.

When you want to ride a thrill ride but don’t want to bother with a locker, you can use each attraction’s “Child Swap” area as a “Bag Swap,” and leave a non-rider with your belongings.

This can be a useful technique for the Harry Potter rides as the locker bays at Forbidden Journey and Gringotts are frequently overcrowded.

Does PGA Tour 2K23 Have Locker Codes?

PGA Tour 2K23 is the go-to golf game for anyone looking to tee off from the comfort of their own home. Standing among other grand 2K sports titles, players have been wondering if PGA Tour 2K23 includes the locker codes feature that’s become a 2K staple in recent years. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about locker codes in PGA Tour 2K23.

Do Locker Codes Exist in PGA Tour 2K23?

Locker codes are in PGA Tour 2K23 . However, working codes are very rarely released, and there are often no active codes available to redeem. Unlike NBA2K, which regularly receives new codes, PGA Tour 2K23’s stream of codes dried up shortly after launch.

How to Find PGA Tour 2K23 Locker Codes

If any future codes are released, you can usually find them through the official PGA Tour 2K X (formerly Twitter) account. Codes have also been known to pop up on the official PGA Tour 2K Discord and given away during 2K livestreams on Twitch .

Related: How To Import Legacy Courses Into PGA Tour 2K23

If you’re hopeful more locker codes will be released, we recommend turning notifications on for PGA Tour 2K’s X account. If you can handle that many notifications about golf, that is. You should also subscribe to the PGA Tour 2K subreddit , where other players can post locker codes they’ve found in the wind.

Locker codes in PGA Tour 2K23 have been known to reward either gear or VC (Virtual Currency). VC can be spent on customizing your PGA Tour MyPLAYER with branded equipment and outfits, club fittings, golf balls, and golf ball skins.

Now you know the situation with locker codes in PGA Tour 2K23, why not check out our guide on reviewing your golfing stats and improving your swing? We also have an article on the incredibly fun Topgolf mode , which can be played with friends locally and online.

Lynch: No matter what happens at Augusta National, this Masters is a guaranteed lose-lose for Jay Monahan

A UGUSTA, Ga. – For all the enmity that exists between Greg Norman and Jay Monahan, more connects than separates them. Both have a healthy share of critics in PGA Tour locker rooms. Both are dependent (Monahan partly, Norman wholly) on the whims of Saudi investment chief, Yasir Al-Rumayyan. And by Monday, both will have experienced leaving the Masters in the wake of a loss that seemed inevitable.

Over the years, Norman departed with that feeling as frequently as Jack Nicklaus left with a new jacket. In a few days, it will be Monahan’s turn. He’s the only man who can’t get a win at Augusta National, no matter what transpires.

A negative narrative is flourishing that says professional golf — or, more specifically, Monahan’s product — is withering. Broadcast ratings for the PGA Tour are down most every week in 2024 , a trend that stretches back well into ’23. Data offers conclusions but not reasons, so speculation on the cause of the decline has produced several credible theses: the best players are splintered between rival tours; the political infighting and rancor is a turn-off; and the constant chatter about greedy players — invariably ascribed to mischievous media by, well, greedy players — is tone-deaf and repellent to the fan base.

The obvious erosion of fan support is such a worrying undercurrent that even Fred Ridley was asked about it in what must be the first time an Augusta National chairman has ever fielded an inquiry about poor ratings. The Masters is invariably the highest-rated golf broadcast of the year. It was again in 2023, when Jon Rahm’s victory drew 12.1 million viewers , still only good enough to place 131st on the year’s list of most-watched sports events (the ranking is dominated by the NFL, not sports played by athletes who think they deserve NFL money).

Ridley offered a caveat on the topic of declining viewership. “I think part of it is just what's happening in the world of media and the fact that people are consuming content in different ways, that's happening in all sports, mobile phones, apps, social media channels, etcetera,” he said. It’s a fair point and acknowledges that ratings are more complex than a raw number, but it won’t dispel concerns that professional golf is eating itself alive. Ridley said as much.

“Golf viewers are down on linear television while other sports, some other sports are up. So you can draw your own conclusions,” he said. “Certainly the fact that the best players in the world are not convening very often is not helpful. Whether or not there's a direct causal effect, I don't know. But I think that it would be a lot better if they were together more often.”

Which is why Monahan is will have to take an ‘L’ regardless of what unfolds in the coming days.

If the Masters is a ratings hit, then it will be presented as evidence that the majors are healthy while regular PGA Tour golf is wilting, that the game only thrives when the best players are together. Cue increased pressure to finalize a deal with the Saudis to end the division and restore normalcy. The particulars of an agreement have been agonizingly slow to materialize and are a long way from concluding and delivering on it isn’t solely within Monahan’s gift. But it will be his burden to shoulder.

Alternatively, if the Masters is a dud compared to the norm, then it fuels fears that golf is inexorably declining, that the discord has driven fans away and not even the best players on the greatest stage can draw them back. Guess in whose direction fingers will be wagged in that scenario?

This week is a no-win for Monahan, but a win-win for Al-Rumayyan.

During the recent meeting in the Bahamas with PGA Tour player-directors , Al-Rumayyan said that while LIV might look unimpressive on a profit and loss statement, he was bullish about its market share of top players. His comment illustrates how the Saudis have two ways to win the perception battle — build a strong product or diminish the competition. LIV remains execrable, but an impression of the PGA Tour in decline serves the same purpose. It’s like a man hollering about the criminality of opponents while fending off 90-odd indictments of his own.

Who wins the 88th Masters will have zero impact on how the divide is healed. This war is fought now in boardrooms, not locker rooms. The tension palpable at the 87th Masters — the first meeting of players since LIV’s proxies filed an antitrust suit against the Tour eight months earlier — is absent this year. The withdrawal of litigation after the June 6th Framework Agreement dissolved the most potent source of angst, even if it infuriated some Tour board members who perched on the fence when their own circuit was under sustained threat.

Any victory this weekend by a LIV player — and there are a handful who have to be considered serious contenders — will be brandished by Norman as a rock-solid win for his flaccid enterprise.

Monahan won’t have that luxury, no matter who wins or how many are watching.

Masters 2024: Prize money payouts at Augusta National

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/4/masters-flag-grandstand-2022.jpg

Adam Glanzman

It says something about what it means to compete in the Masters that players aren’t thinking twice about the fact they have no idea what the prize money payouts will be this week at Augusta National before teeing off in the opening round. Club officials won't officially announce the 2024 purse until after a cut is made in the tournament. Mind you, the chance to win a green jacket, a spot in the Champions Locker Room and a lifetime exemption into the major are enough reward to make it worth everybody’s while to play.

That said, there is a little uncertainty as to what the prize money payout will be when it is formally announced. A year ago, Masters officials increased the overall purse to $18 million, a $3 million jump from 2022 and $6 million more than in 2021. But that overall number still lags behind the $20 million purses offered in the PGA Tour’s new signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.

RELATED: A brief history of the Masters prize money payout

Currently, the top paying men’s major championship is the U.S. Open, with the USGA also paying $20 million in prize money during last year’s championship at LACC. The PGA Championship bumped up its purse last year at Oak Hill to $17.5 million and the Open Championship paid $16.5 million at Royal Liverpool in 2023. All the majors are currently dwarfed by the Players Championship, which paid out $25 million in March with winner Scottie Scheffler earning $4.5 million.

Below is that payouts from the 2023 Masters. We’ll update this post when the 2024 Masters prize money payouts are official.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and the different shades of green

a locker tour

AUGUSTA, Ga. — There was a moment Thursday afternoon when Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler stood beside each other and chatted. This was on the third green, with the Masters just a couple of hours old. They are the two top-ranked players in the world. Their games are slightly different in style but each absolutely complete. In such conversations, they can relate to each other in ways others — even some of their peers — cannot. In sheer ability, they are among a handful of golfers who are the best on the planet.

They have so much in common, yet at Augusta National Golf Club, they occupy polar opposite head spaces. The reason is simple: Scheffler has a green jacket, and McIlroy does not. That difference defines and informs everything they say and feel and think about the Masters and its host club. Scheffler gabs and gushes. McIlroy hems and haws. One is effusive and self-assured. The other is eternally searching.

“Sometimes I still can’t believe it myself, walking in the champions’ locker room,” Scheffler said.

“There’s no point in doing anything different this week compared to other weeks,” McIlroy said, adding, importantly, “I guess.”

Any Masters field is divided into two groups: those who have won here and therefore can return forever and those who haven’t and are left to dream about getting to the other side. For the first group, the drive down Magnolia Lane can be soothing and freeing because this is the site of a career-defining, life-changing triumph. For the second, that same drive can be suffocating and ulcer-inducing because as the years tick by, the chances grow fewer. It’s only natural to let the mind devolve into “I wonder what that champions’ dinner is really like.”

Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world who won his first major here in 2022, opened the 88th Masters with a squeaky clean 6-under-par 66 to make sure leader Bryson DeChambeau didn’t run away with his 65 . McIlroy, whose guts are strewn all over these grounds, steadied himself for a 1-under 71.

“It was okay,” McIlroy said. “I held it together well. It was a little scrappy.”

“I enjoy coming here and competing in this golf tournament,” Scheffler said.

Thursday’s two data points don’t mean Scheffler will win another green jacket or that McIlroy never will win his first. But something about their pairing here starkly drew the lines between the two, at least at this moment in time.

By almost any measure, McIlroy is the more accomplished player. He leads Scheffler in major championships, four to one. He leads him in PGA Tour wins, 24-8. McIlroy, who has been playing golf around the globe since he was a teenager, has won 17 times on the Europe-based circuit now known as the DP World Tour. Scheffler can counter only with a pair of wins on the minor league Korn Ferry Tour. McIlroy has been the top-ranked player in the world for 122 weeks, Scheffler for 82.

Yes, McIlroy, 34, simply has been doing this longer than the 27-year-old Scheffler. His résumé should be gaudier. But he is inarguably chasing something here that Scheffler already has. It’s a defining difference.

Consider how each arrived and prepared for this week. Scheffler was here Sunday and did what he always does when he first returns: race into the clubhouse and grab his green jacket — which current champions can take home for the year they won but past winners must leave on the property.

Turns out it still fits — and looks sharp to boot.

“It’s kind of fun walking around the grounds and being able to put it on,” Scheffler said. “It was a lot more fun getting to wear it for a whole year.”

He laughed because that can be a default mode. In just his fifth Masters, he knows both feelings. McIlroy is here for the 16th time, and it’s possible he has tried that many ways to approach his preparation. The plan this year: come up for two practice rounds last week, compete at the PGA Tour stop in San Antonio — where he finished third — head home to Florida and not get to Augusta until midday Tuesday.

“I feel like I’ve done it quite a few different ways,” he admitted. “And I guess [I’m] just trying to bring a little bit of normalcy into what I sort of try to do week-in, week-out.”

One has a routine he embraces because it brings back great feelings. The other is still wandering through the pines because whatever he has tried before hasn’t produced what, by now, is the only acceptable result.

It’s hard to blame McIlroy for trying new things. His wounds here are deep and real and go back more than a decade. In 2011, he opened with a 65, held the solo lead at the midway point and took a four-shot lead into Sunday. He shot an 80. His relationship with the place is complicated, even weighty, because a Masters win would make him just the sixth player with victories at all four major championships.

“No question, he’ll do it at some point,” none other than Tiger Woods said this week. “Rory’s too talented, too good. He’s going to be playing this event for a very long time. He’ll get it done. It’s just a matter of when.”

McIlroy’s response?

“It’s nice to hear, in my opinion, the best player ever to play the game say something like that,” he said. “Does that mean that it’s going to happen? Obviously not.”

He’s not a full-on pessimist at this place. But over more than a decade-and-a-half, it’s fair to say his performances haven’t fostered optimism. And on Thursday, he was subjected to, in McIlroy’s words, “the best golfer in the world right now” playing the best golf in the world right in front of him. In the rare instance in which Scheffler made a mistake — a drive into the pine straw left of the seventh fairway, a tee shot into the bunker over the par-3 12th — he did something otherworldly to extract himself. At No. 7, it was a screaming low hook around trees and into the middle greenside bunker, from which he got up and down for par. At No. 12, it was the softest little sand shot that gently trickled into the cup, turning a likely bogey into an improbable birdie.

“Scottie does such a good job of — it doesn’t look like it’s 6 under par, and then at the end of the day, it’s 6 under par,” McIlroy said. “He’s just so efficient with everything.”

Well, almost everything. Scheffler’s wife, Meredith, is pregnant with the couple’s first child. Though she’s not due until next month, Scheffler has said he will leave Augusta if the baby comes early — even though the nursery at home near Dallas isn’t ready.

“I think we’re just very unprepared to be parents,” Scheffler said.

That’s fine, for now. He is prepared to play well in what’s due to be another windy round Friday. He has recent evidence he can do that. McIlroy is looking for that. At the 18th green, as they took off their hats — both white, both bearing the Nike swoosh — they headed into their evenings, so similar in so many ways, separated by a gulf so much wider than Rae’s Creek.

The Masters 2024

Professional golf makes its annual visit to Augusta National Golf Club at the 2024 Masters, beginning Thursday and ending Sunday. Bryson DeChambeau , the 2020 U.S. Open winner, and 2022 Masters winner Scottie Scheffler have the top scores in the clubhouse, although not every player finished the first round.

Who’s playing: The Masters field has 89 players, including five-time winner Tiger Woods , defending champion Jon Rahm and Scheffler . Five amateur golfers are also in the field .

LIV and PGA: Thirteen LIV players will compete at the Masters with their PGA Tour counterparts, distinguishable only by the LIV team gear they’ll be sporting. More than 10 months have passed since the PGA Tour announced plans to partner with LIV Golf’s Saudi backers, but no deal is imminent.

Betting: From historical performance to odds, here’s a breakdown of nine players who could win the Masters .

Masters Champions Dinner unites LIV Golf, PGA Tour players for 'an emotional night'

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Champions Dinner tipped its hat to Spain on Tuesday evening.

On what would’ve been the 67th birthday of Seve Ballesteros, the table of 33 champions of the Masters Tournament welcomed its newest member – Jon Rahm – before flooding the room with memories of Augusta’s first European victor.

"It was a great night; an emotional night," said Larry Mize, the 1987 winner. "Ben (Crenshaw) made sure that tonight was all about Jon, Seve and Jackie Burke."

Rahm sat at the head of the table, side-by-side with Ben Crenshaw, marking the first time a LIV golfer played host to the dinner.

And even though the narrative of PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf remains heated to some, for one night, the sides united.

"We’re a fraternity," said Crenshaw, who emcees the annual supper.

Added Charles Coody: "It couldn’t have been more congenial. Even Tom Watson at the very end of dinner, he stood from his chair and said how happy he was to see the camaraderie within our group. It was a wonderful night."

Thirty-three past champions attended the dinner. Angel Cabrera and Sandy Lyle were the only two former champs who didn't make. According to Mize, Lyle’s wife, Jolanda, was having inner ear problems, and the 1988 Masters winner elected to remain home.

“Jolanda tried to get Sandy to come,” Mize said. “But he didn’t want to come without her.”

Crenshaw, in his Texas drawl, opened the evening by welcoming Rahm to the Masters Club; he then gifted the Spaniard an inscribed gold locket in the form of the Club emblem.

Two years ago, at the 2022 Champions Dinner, Hideki Matsuyama stunned the table by reciting a speech in English, prompting Gary Player to toast in Japanese.

When asked earlier in the week about congratulating Rahm in Spanish, Crenshaw reflected on his Austin High School diploma.

"I took French," said Crenshaw, laughing.

From there, stories immersed the room about Seve.

Bernhard Langer orated a tale about the 1983 Ryder Cup at Palm Beach Gardens when Ballesteros struck a 3-wood out of a bunker from 230 yards onto the green.

Langer told the table that from the lie Seve had, no golfer – aside from Ballesteros – would’ve cleared the lip with anything less than a six iron.

Crenshaw also mentioned the passing of 1956 Masters Champion Jackie Burke.

Burke, who shared a Champions locker with Tiger Woods, died on Jan. 19, 10 days before his 101st birthday.

"God put me down here for a long spell," Burke said on his 100th birthday.

As defending champ, Rahm selected the menu for Tuesday evening, with his spread giving homage to Spain’s Basque region.

The meal began with six options for tapas and pintxos, Spanish for starters, before offering two main courses: Chuleton a la Parrilla, a ribeye with Piquillo peppers, or Rodaballo al Pil-Pil, a fish dish with white asparagus.

José María Olazábal chose the fish. Craig Stadler ordered red meat.

Coody picked fish.

"I didn’t want to venture too far into no-man’s land," Coody said.

According to multiple past winners, similar to last year, Phil Mickelson remained quiet, and despite being close to Rahm, he elected not to give a toast.

Scheffler: 'I'm excited about how I've been playing'

Scheffler: 'I'm excited about how I've been playing'

Scottie Scheffler arrives at Augusta as the strong favourite to win a second green jacket after his first victory in 2022. He admitted feeling confident after wins this season in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and the Players' Championship at Sawgrass.

Here's what he said leading up to today's first round:

💬 "I'm excited about how I've been playing to begin this year. I had two nice wins which was a bunch of fun. It's just one of those deals where all I'm trying to do is put myself in contention for the tournament and hopefully finish it off.

"(Looking into the future) does not really occupy my thoughts day to day. I'm an extremely competitive person, I like competing out here and hopefully I'll be out here competing for a long, long time."

The 27-year-old also touched on his 2022 triumph:

💬 "It was a good experience. It was a ton of fun to be able to win here and sometimes I still can't believe it myself walking into that champions' locker room.

"To me, it's just a special place. It's the Mecca for us growing up here in the States. Being Americans, this is the tournament we all look for and to be every year is extremely special. It all stands out, everything is done so well here.

"It's just a joy to play this tournament."

The Masters - a tournament without comparison

The Masters - a tournament without comparison

💬 Jon Rahm: “I had heard from other players, a few Masters champions and a few that have won other majors. They said there's something different, something special when you win this one and I can confirm it is absolutely true. The jump from no majors to (winning the) US Open was smaller than what it was from the US Open to the Masters.

“It is the biggest tournament in the world, with no offense to anything else. It's probably the most followed by people that don't even play golf. That's what makes the difference, where your notoriety goes up a bit.

“But it's also the tradition, right? By being the only venue, we keep coming back year after year. All the traditions. All the shots. All the stories. They make it so, so special.

“In my case, last year being Seve Ballesteros' birthday, Easter and all the many coincidences to happen on that Sunday, is what made it so special.

“Obviously all the family moments at the end were great but I still have a picture where I'm holding my son and I'm giving a hug to my dad, my son is between us and just to see that moment of me and my dad having my son, it was quite special. That's why I say it's hard to put it into words; I really can't describe it.”

What’s it like to win the Masters?

What’s it like to win the Masters?

What is it like and what does it mean to win the Masters?

The most recent player to experience that feeling is the reigning champion, Jon Rahm , and he spoke beautifully on the subject ahead of his return to Augusta.

Rather than attempting to paraphrase his words, they will follow in here for you all in a moment.

Tiger Woods: I can win - if everything comes together

Tiger Woods: I can win - if everything comes together

Tiger Woods will kickstart his 26th Masters appearance today, in a three-ball with Jason Day and Max Homa.

Many believe a sixth green jacket is beyond the 48-year-old. He does not agree, but it will take a monumental effort from Woods to tie with record-holder Jack Nicklaus on six Masters titles, especially given his string of major injuries.

Woods said ahead of this year's tournament:

💬 "If everything comes together, I think I can get one more.

"I hurt every day. I ache every day. I prefer warm, humid and hot. The ankle doesn't hurt anymore. It's fused, that's not going anywhere. It's other parts of my body that now have to take the brunt of it. The back, the knee, other parts of the body."

One to watch - in a few years' time

One to watch - in a few years' time

Wednesday's Par 3 tournament may have been won by Rickie Fowler - well done him - but the highlights reel was owned by someone a fair bit younger.

Step forward Dakota Watson, daughter of former Masters champion Bubba Watson. She tucked away three delicious puts on her way round that dad would've been proud to muster for himself. All in front of a significant crowd.

Remember the name.

💬 Bob N: “First timers have NO chance at winning at Augusta.”

💬 Anon: “Golfers build up Augusta National as the Mecca of golf. In a certain sense that is understandable. But it also makes it harder for a first-time player at the Masters to perform at their highest level because they are in such awe of the place.

“Scottie Scheffler still has some mental issues with his putting. If he can chase those demons away he is definitely a favorite. I also expect John Rahm and Brooks Koepka to be in the mix. All these guys are experienced and battle tested. My dark horse is Hideki Matsuyama, he's done it before and he's got a win this year at Riviera, a quality golf course.”

💬 Jules P: “I can’t see past Scottie Scheffler for this one. He already has a jacket and will be playing without pressure. Compare that to Rory McIlroy who always looks as though he arrives at Augusta with the weight of the world on his shoulders.”

During his pre-tournament media appearance, reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm was grilled on his preparation for this year’s event. And the Spaniard insisted he is as ready this year as he was for last year’s event.

He said of LIV and his recent performances: “I understand there’s less people (in LIV). I understand the team format’s a little different. I understand we're going shotgun and things are a little bit different to how they are in a PGA Tour event. But the pressure’s there. Like, I want to win as bad as I wanted to win before I moved on to LIV.

“So, yeah, going down the stretch when you're in contention is the exact same feelings. That really doesn't change. The same way it was when I went through the Spanish Open or many other events where the field might not be up to the level that it could be on a designated event, right, that doesn’t really - winning is winning, and that's what matters.”

The LIV golfers in attendance at Augusta this week

The LIV golfers in attendance at Augusta this week

As it stands, LIV players’ entry to the Masters is mostly limited to past major success. The only way for a LIV player to land a spot is by holding past champion status at Augusta (lifetime) or another major (five-year exemption) or finishing in the top four of a previous year’s major.

While individual winners of full-point PGA Tour events are awarded Masters invitations, LIV winners are not. And while PGA Tour players can accumulate Official World Golf Rankings points based on their finishes, LIV is not recognized by the OWGR and not awarded points.

That means that only 13 LIV golfers will be teeing it up at Augusta today, down from 18 last year. Jon Rahm , last year’s champion, is in attendance, along with fellow former winners Sergio Garcia , Dustin Johnson , Phil Mickelson , Patrick Reed , Charl Schwartzel and Bubba Watson .

The much-fancied Joaquin Niemann also received an invite, while Bryson DeChambeau , Tyrrell Hatton , Brooks Koepka , Adrian Meronk and Cameron Smith all fall into at least one of the exemption categories.

Ridley non-committal on pathway for LIV stars to Masters

Ridley non-committal on pathway for LIV stars to Masters

While 13 of the 89 players in this year’s Masters field are members of LIV Golf, including defending champion Jon Rahm, five of the top 10 finishers in the 2023 LIV standings will spend this week at home as Augusta National Golf Club wrestles with questions of access to its field amid professional golf’s divide.

While the pathway is clear for PGA Tour players, it remains limited for those on LIV.

Furthermore, that dynamic doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley was noncommittal yesterday when asked about potential criteria being created specifically for the Saudi Arabian-owned tour.

“I think it will be difficult to establish any type of point system that had any connection to the rest of the world of golf because they’re basically, not totally, but for the most part, a closed shop,” Ridley said at his annual Masters news conference.

Fowler seeking to rekindle his Rocket Mortgage Classic magic

Fowler seeking to rekindle his Rocket Mortgage Classic magic

The last time Rickie Fowler teed it up at Augusta was during the November Masters in 2020. Fowler played well at the Masters in the past — he has three top-10 finishes including a runner-up result in 2018. Last year, Fowler ascended back to the forefront of the pro golf scene, winning at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his first victory since the 2019 Phoenix Open. He was back in the final group on Sunday at the U.S. Open before finishing T5 and made the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Fowler is currently trying to rekindle that magic. In 2024, he’s played eight events, making six cuts but zero finishes in the top 25. His negative strokes gained off the tee (171st on tour), approaching the green (146th) and putting (120th) are concerning at a golf course like Augusta.

Rickie Fowler rubbishes talk of the par-three ‘curse’

Rickie Fowler rubbishes talk of the par-three ‘curse’

Rickie Fowler wasn’t having any talk of the par-three ‘curse’ after his victory yesterday.

“The Par-3 contest is something special,” he said. “You know, the tradition of the Masters and being able to go out there, and now being able to spend it with my family.

“Been around plenty of the little kids over the years but a little different when we have our own out there.”

Rickie Fowler wins Augusta’s ‘cursed’ par-three contest

Rickie Fowler wins Augusta’s ‘cursed’ par-three contest

Rickie Fowler won Wednesday’s par-three contest — and will be hoping he does not become the next player in a very long line to fall victim to the ‘curse’ of the tournament.

Since the friendly contest started in 1960, nobody has ever become par-three and Masters champion in the same week. That has led to the amusing sight of many players now deliberately avoiding shooting the best score possible on the eve of the major.

But Fowler, who is yet to claim a major victory, completed the nine-hole course in the grounds of Augusta National in five under par. That saw him finish two shots clear of JT Poston, Austria’s Sepp Straka and Mexican amateur Santiago de la Fuente.

Masters 2024 weather delay

Masters 2024 weather delay

Play had initially been scheduled to start at 8am ET (1pm BST). Erik van Rooyen , Jake Knapp were the first players due to tee it up.

The honorary starters — Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson — had been scheduled to take their shots from 7.40am ET (12.40pm BST).

But all of that will be delayed, with Augusta confirming the 2024 Masters will not start until 9am ET (2pm BST) at the earliest.

Augusta National have just said in a short statement: “We continue to monitor the weather closely. Gate openings and tee times have been delayed until further notice. The first round will not begin before 9am.”

Min Woo Lee a player to keep an eye on at Augusta

Min Woo Lee a player to keep an eye on at Augusta

Min Woo Lee , one of the more colorful personalities in professional golf, is definitely one to keep an eye on this weekend.

The 25-year-old is trying to become the second Australian golfer to win the Masters, joining Adam Scott (2013). Lee is playing in his third Masters. Last year, he missed the cut. During his inaugural Masters appearance in 2022, Lee finished T14. Lee’s last win came at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship last November. His best finish at a major was T5 at last year’s U.S. Open.

Fans hope that Lee will captivate the highlight reels, as he did at this year’s Players Championship when he converted a 60-foot birdie putt on the island green 17th hole.

North Carolina welcomes a historic visitor in Japan's Prime Minister Kishida

RALEIGH, N.C. — (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cemented economic links and cultural amity with North Carolina on Friday, following up time in Washington during his official U.S. visit by checking up on benchmark Japanese companies building in the ninth-most populous state and meeting with students.

In between, Kishida lunched at the governor’s mansion in Raleigh, a historic first for the head of a foreign country in the Tar Heel state. Japan is North Carolina’s largest source of foreign direct investment, where over 200 Japanese companies have now set up shop, employing over 30,000 people, according to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and his office.

“I am honored to be here in North Carolina to showcase the multilayered and strong ties between Japan and the United States,” Kishida said through a translator, inside the mansion ballroom, where about 60 people listened. The guest list included Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein, Republican state House Speaker Tim Moore and executives of several Japanese and American companies in the region.

He called North Carolina “a state at the forefront of the times” and flexed his knowledge about its landmarks, mentioning Kill Devil Hills, where the Wright Brothers had their first successful flight, as an example of the state's ingenuity.

Until now, Kishida's trip to the U.S. had been focused on global safety. He met President Joe Biden to discuss security concerns about China's military, participated in the first trilateral summit between the U.S., Japan and the Philippines, and made the case in an address to a joint session of Congress for the U.S. to remain involved in global security.

But Kishida, who has been Japan’s prime minister since 2021, said before his trip that he chose to stop in North Carolina to show that the Japan-U.S. partnership extends beyond Washington, according to a translation posted on his website.

Kishida, Cooper and others traveled to the Greensboro area for Friday morning visits to a Honda Aircraft Co. production facility, as well as to the construction site for a Toyota Motor Corp. electric and hybrid battery plant that is expected to ultimately employ more than 5,000 people.

Hours before Kishida and his wife arrived Thursday night at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, a subsidiary of another Japanese company, Fujifilm, announced an additional $1.2 billion investment in its upcoming biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant and another 680 jobs.

Chiaki Takagi, a Japanese studies lecturer at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, said this week that the prime minister's visit surprised her but that it could signal a “positive future partnership” between Japan and the U.S. and more Japanese workers coming to the state.

“This whole thing will provide the area with opportunities to be engaged in very active cultural exchange between Japan and the U.S.,” Takagi said.

The luncheon marked the first time a foreign head of state has visited the governor's mansion since record-keeping began in 1891, the state Department of Natural and Cultural Resources said.

“What a better way to start than with one of our closest allies and friends from the country of Japan, with whom we share so many common interests,” Cooper said at the luncheon. “So today we make history, welcoming our wonderful friends.”

Cooper has a history of visiting Japan, making two trips to Tokyo in 2017 and 2023 during his time as governor. When it was announced Kishida was coming to the U.S., Rahm Emanuel, U.S. ambassador to Japan, said during the luncheon Cooper was the first to call to ask for the prime minister to visit his state.

Guests dined on a three-course meal prepared by James Beard award-winning Raleigh chef Ashley Christensen, which included wagyu beef tenderloin and Carolina Gold Rice pudding. Meanwhile, additional members of the Japanese delegation and the governor's staff listened to live bluegrass music as they ate barbeque.

Kishida, Cooper and others went to North Carolina State University in Raleigh later Friday, where they met students ranging from those in middle school to adults studying Japanese. They visited the university's Japan Center, which was established by former Gov. Jim Hunt and others in 1980 following a state trade mission to Tokyo. North Carolina State also has long, formal ties with Japan's Nagoya University.

Earlier Friday, Kishida's wife, Yuko, and North Carolina first lady Kristin Cooper shared a traditional Japanese tea at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham.
