Here is a riddle for you all to consider: What is cute as a basket of puppies, addictive as a bag of chocolates, and as entertaining as a Chinese finger trap (maybe even more). The answer is BABYMETAL.

I was referred to their YouTube channel by a friend. Then the magic truly began. I was watching their music videos day and night, (in a non-creepy way, considering SU-METAL is older than me by a lot) and then I was compelled to learn Japanese, which in my mind is serious dedication. I then continued to watch their lives on YouTube (most in horrible quality), reviews, and dance covers made by other fans. I am glad I am not the only stalker on the Internet. I then asked myself a question: "It would TOTALLY be worth it to go to one of these, right?" I then begged my relative who lives abroad to let me go to the BABYMETAL birthday celebration of YUI-METAL in Paris, and later MOA-METAL's in Cologne.

I completely blew all of my summer's spending money, but to me, nothing was more worth the money than to see those girls and Kami-Band in the live performance.

When I finally got to the floor of both of those theatres, I had a huge adrenaline spike. It was hard for me to even breathe. The music fusion of J-Pop and Metal, the in-sync-ness of the whole experience, the fans. It was too much to absorb. I would recommend the BABYMETAL experience to anyone who wants to go on a fox-ride of an adventure, like the one I am experiencing now. But to put it shortly, I'll say this: BABYMETAL is coming. And you are next.

I'm a huge fan of BABYMETAL and was looking forward to the show. Although the quality of their actual performance was pretty good, I took issue with a few things that night. First of all, the line to get into the venue (Regency Ballroom) was over three blocks long and it moved very slowly. It took us over an hour to get inside. Fortunately, we got in a few minutes before the show started, but the place was very crowded (it was sold out) and difficult to see the stage. My girlfriend is only 5'2" tall, and she could not see the band at all. They should raise the stage a bit to help with this problem. It did not help that the ventilation is quite poor--it got very hot and stuffy with all those hundreds of people. It felt like a health hazard! Not fun to stand around in all night! The show itself was only about an hour and a half, which is short in my opinion, especially since there was no warm up band. They never played some of my favorite songs as a result. They did one encore. I had never been to the Regency Ballroom, and I don't think I will go back unless they improve some of the things I mentioned. The next time I see BABYMETAL, I will be more choosy about the venue!

This was my first time seeing Babymetal. Our Tucson, Arizona show was decent, and I was very excited to see the act. However, I felt a little underwhelmed when the show was over. I think my biggest complaint was the set length. The set list was only about an hour long. At the end, they just left the stage. No encore, no "we love you guys, Tucson is the best!", nothing. The crowd stayed around for a minute, wondering, "is this really it?" I kinda felt jipped. The saving grace for the event was the opening act. I'd never heard of Avatar before this show, and I didn't YouTube any of their music prior to the show. I thought they were a little silly at first, with the outfits and face paint and voice style and everything, but in the end, I enjoyed Avatar a lot. Sadly, more than the Babymetal act. Would I see Babymetal again? Yes, but I'd be going in with lowered expectations. Would I see Avatar again? Absolutely, and with deserved high expectations.

A great show!!

It was far from flawless, there were sound problems throughout the night and it seemed to take the sound engineer a while to sort the levels out but as a show it was spectacular with a walkway from the main stage to a separate small stage in the middle of the floor. The lighting was on a huge scale, reminiscent of the likes of AC/DC and Iron Maiden, with plenty of Rammstein-esque pyrotechnics.

The audience were a complete mix, from metal-heads and J-pop lovers and everything in between with an age range of five to 75 and from many nationalities. I counted at least 10 different national flags!! The one thing most noticeable, though, was that everyone was there to enjoy themselves and it was evident from the Kami Band as well as the girls themselves. At the end of the last song, Road to Resistance, all three seemed reluctant to finally leave the stage.

For an evening of pure fun and enjoyment Babymetal are very hard to beat.

Sold out/general admission so we were almost 2 hours early (to have dinner and get in line). But the line was already around the entire building. There was the craziest diversity: anime girls in full costume followed by tattooed death metal guys in Megadeth t-shirts followed by conservative Asian dad with 6 year old girl in pigtails and then the wife and I (who just had to see it in person after seeing their videos on youtube). The people watching was great. It turned out to be a real high octane show that fully held my attention the entire time. It was worth our time. The band kicks ass. The girls are amazing. It was unlike anything we have ever seen. Great time.

greg-lee-6’s profile image

First time I'd been privileged enough to see the girls perform, when they were dancing in front of the red wall, just blew my mind took me back a long time to bands back in the 70s/80s. Wembley is a great place because although so many other fans there, you still felt really close to the girls which added to the memory. The four men playing the instruments were the work force making the girls what they are brilliant...dazed after the concert was over, I only had about 60, miles to drive, I forgot the route it took us nearly 2, hours or more to get home, but didn't we all remained entranced by the sound & sights in front of that redwall

damon-hazell’s profile image

So the Babymetal concert was a fantastic show. The songs, the choreography, the lightshow, all were brilliant. I didn't even really mind the addition of two new dancers that much. The Kami Band was of course excellent.

However, missing one member of the original line-up (Yui) made the show feel distinctly un-Babymetal-like. The 'kawaii' that made the act so endearing in the first place is missing without the trio of girls. Not that they can't be allowed to grow up, but they're a team, and the interaction of the three of them is noticably missing.

Overall, very worth the trouble to see. Just...different from earlier Babymetal.

Equinoqs’s profile image

All of the videos I've seen for Babymetal are good, but they don't do the band justice. The girls are great, full of energy and put on an awesome show, and the guys playing the instruments are very talented as well.

It was a very heavy, intense concert.

The only downside to my experience was I picked a bad place to stand and had a hard time seeing them. But that was my own fault. When you go to their show, you definitely want to be able to see them while they're performing.

I would highly recommend everybody see Babymetal live. I know I'll be eagerly waiting for their next tour!

dan-markowski’s profile image

Stunning, amazing, breathtaking... I don't know which word to use to describe it the best. Such a great and professional performance from Babymetal, I just can't praise them enough. The feel you get from seeing them perform in person has a completely different vibe to it than just listening to them on Youtube. Everyone in crowd was going wild, everyone there shared the same love for the band and that made it even better!

timaster7878’s profile image

Fantastic show! The lead singer is a pretty good singer and does NOT lip synch! The girls are fun to watch and full of energy. The backing metal band is spectacular!

It was great to see a wider variety of fans than at a standard metal show. I also loved seeing all the standard fans embracing such a novel idea.

Would definitely see them again!

Babymetal to return to the UK and Europe in April

The reactivated Babymetal will return to Europe in 2023 as special guests on Sabaton's arena tour

Babymetal against a black background

Babymetal will undertake their first UK and European dates for three years in April/May, as special guests on Sabaton's arena tour. "We are extremely happy to welcome Babymetal to our already much anticipated tour in Europe 2023," says Sabaton bass player Pär Sundström. “The energy and power of this band will for sure make each night something special."

The Japanese duo and the Swedish power metal quintet already have some shared history, as Sabaton vocalist Joakim Brodén guested on the track Oh! MAJINAI on Babymetal's third album, Metal Galaxy . Brodén is enthused about hooking up with the band once more in Europe.

“If there ever was a band that would break all the rules, it’s Babymetal with the power and precision to deliver a full on heavy metal show!” he states. “It’s not our first rodeo together, expect nothing but excellence from Babymetal!”

With Lordi opening the show each night, Sabaton and Babymetal will play: April 14: Leeds First Direct Arena, UK April 15: London OVO Arena Wembley, UK April 16: Cardiff Motorpoint Arena, UK April 18: Glasgow OVO Hydro, UK April 21: Paris Zenith, FRA April 22: Frankfurt Festhalle, GER April 24: Hamburg Barclays Arena, GER April 25: Esch / Alzette Rockhal, LUX April 28 Stockholm Avicii Arena, SWE April 29: Oslo Spektrum, NOR April 30: Copenhagen – Royal Arena, DEN May 02:  Hannover ZAG Arena, GER May 03: Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, HOL May 05: Berlin Mercedes Benz Arena, GER May 06: Quarterback Immobilien Arena, GER May 07: Vienna Stadthalle, AUS May 09: Lodz Atlas Arena, POL May 10: Ostrava Arena Ostrava, CZE May 12: Cologne Lanxess Arena, GER May 13: Antwerp Sportpaleis, BEL May 15: Munich Olympiahalle, GER May 18: Tallinn Saku Arena, EST May 19: Helsinki Ice Hall, FIN May 20: Kuopio Kuopio Hall, FIN Babymetal's first new album in four years, The Other One , will arrive in Spring also, on March 24, to be precise. The record will be a concept album.

"The concept album reveals the other side of the Babymetal story that, until now, remains untold," the band explained in a statement accompanying the news. "A total of 10 songs have been discovered within  The Other One  restoration project, with each song representing a unique theme based on 10 separate parallel worlds that they have discovered."

Swedish metal heroes SABATON have revealed the support acts for the European leg of their upcoming "Tour To End All Tours" . Japanese pop- metal sensation BABYMETAL will appear as very special guests, marking their first international shows in over three years. Finnish Eurovision winners LORDI will open all shows.

"We are extremely happy to welcome BABYMETAL to our already much anticipated tour in Europe 2023” says SABATON bass player Pär Sundström . "The energy and power of this band will for sure make each night something special."

"If there ever was a band that would break all the rules, it's BABYMETAL with the power and precision to deliver a full-on heavy metal show," echoes SABATON frontman Joakim Brodén . "It's not our first rodeo together. Expect nothing but excellence from BABYMETAL !"

Joakim participated as a guest on "Oh! Majinai" on BABYMETAL 's third album, "Metal Galaxy" , released in October 2018. He also made a guest appearance at BABYMETAL 's headline show in October 2018 "Babymetal World Tour 2018 In Japan Extra Show 'Dark Night Carnival'" .

BABYMETAL last week revealed that they will release their first concept album, "The Other One" , on Friday, March 24, 2023. Leading up to this concept album release, five pre-release digital singles will be available worldwide for download and streaming, each respectively scheduled to release in October, November, January, February, and March.

BABYMETAL was formed in 2010. Their mission was to unify the world through heavy metal by creating a fusion of heavy metal and the Japanese pop genre. Their music contains a stunning mix of electronic pop, a pinch of alternative and industrial rock, and is leveled up by fast-driven heavy metal. Their live shows are ground-breaking and epic visual as well as sound performances. BABYMETAL continued to travel the path of metal with the international release of their three albums, telling the story of the mighty Fox God and his brave metal warriors.

A book about the first ten years of BABYMETAL , "Bessatsu Kadokawa Souryoku Tokushuu" , was released in Japan in October 2020. It contains a long interview with Su-metal and Moametal as well as never-before-heard stories from band producer Kobametal from BABYMETAL 's decade-long history, photos taken from live shows, a discussion between Demon Kakka and Kobametal , and much more.

In 2018, BABYMETAL announced the departure of Yuimetal , who was formerly one of the members of the Japanese group's core trio. She exited the band, explaining in a statement that she would go on to pursue a solo career as Mizuno Yu .

Animated metal band Dethklok brings tour with Babymetal to the Masonic for two nights

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 5:39 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

The popular death metal band led by Brendan Small, the creative force behind popular Adult Swim animated show "Metalocalypse," Dethklok comes to the Masonic in San Francisco for two shows with co-headliners Babymetal.

Arguably the second most popular virtual band behind Gorillaz (the animated group helmed by Blur singer Damon Albarn), Dethklok made their as the stars of "Metalocalypse" when the show created by Small and partner/voice actor Tommy Blancha debuted in 2006. The world biggest death metal band in the program's absurd and surreal alternate universe, Dethklok stands as the planet's seventh largest economy despite the fact that the group's members are idiotic incompetents incapable of doing anything besides writing and performing brutal metal songs.

The quintet of singer Nathan Explosion (who was inspired by Cannibal Corpse vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher), guitarists Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Toki Wartooth, bassist William Murderface and drummer Pickles live and work in their massive fortress-like home and studio Mordhaus, venturing into the world to secure lucrative sponsorship deals and play huge concerts for their legions of fanatical followers with outlandish stage theatrics like over-the-top pyrotechnics, lasers and a giant swinging pendulum blade, inevitably resulting in widespread death and destruction.

Over the course of four seasons and a special broadcast on Adult Swim, "Metalocalypse" became one of the network's more popular shows and a favorite among musicians, with such notable figures as King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Jon Hamm, Werner Herzog, Jack Black and members of Metallica, Exodus, Emperor and Mastodon appearing on the show. Dethklok further built on its fanbase with a series of studio albums featuring the satirical songs featured the show like "Murmaider," "Bloodrocuted" and "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle." The band also delivered entertaining live performances with widescreen clips of the animated band projected behind Small and his talented band including monster drummer Gene Hogland (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Devin Townsend) and former Frank Zappa collaborator Mike Kenneally on guitar.

Dethklok would make regular festival appearances and tour with the likes of Mastodon, High On Fire, Machine Head and the Black Dahlia Murder. After the broadcast of the hour-long rock opera special, "Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem" in 2013, the band continued to perform, but the project went on hiatus after the show was cancelled two years later.

The band returned to action in 2019, playing the Adult Swim Festival to ecstatic crowds. Dethklok also returned to the festival post-pandemic in 2022. The following year, Smalls was at last able to release the final chapter in the Dethklok story with the film Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar , which was accompanied by both a soundtrack and the band issuing its acclaimed fourth studio recording,  Dethalbum IV .

With the show having run its course, the band's current tour could be Dethklok's last hurrah as it takes to the road with previous touring partners and co-headliners Babymetal which stops at the Masonic for two nights starting Wednesday . A sensation in their native Japan since first forming in 2010, the group mixes elements of heavy metal with elements of J-Pop and "kawaii" -- the Japanese "culture of cuteness" as exemplified by Hello Kitty and Pokemon. Singer Suzuka Nakamoto had impressed producer Kobametal (aka Key Kobayashi) in her earlier girl groups Karen Girl's and Sakura Gakuin when he wanted to start a new band performing a heavier style of music.

Initially a successful offshoot of Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became independent in 2013 and enjoyed growing popularity with the release of their self-titled debut the following year. Featuring Nakamoto along with fellow singers Moa Kikuchi (also a member of Sakura Gakuin) and Yui Mizuno executing synchronized dance moves and melodic vocals backed by a group of shredding metal session players known as the Kami Band, the album delivered a dizzying juxtaposition of sunshine pop and metallic crunch. The band rocketed to success in Japan and were playing sold-out shows to thousands when the girls were still in their teens.

The notoriety in their native land soon led to international touring in Europe and North America, with Babymetal appearing at major metal festivals and opening for Lady Gaga. By the time the band was set to release their sophomore album Metal Resistance in 2016, they were headlining Wembley Arena in London and the huge Tokyo Dome to 55,000 screaming fans. More high-profile support gigs with the Red Hot Chili Peppers followed.

While the band suffered some hardship with the accidental death of guitarist Mikio Fujioka late in 2017 after he fell from an observation deck and the departure of Mizuno due to health reasons the next year, Babymetal continued to tour and in 2023 announced the addition of Momoko Okazaki as Fujioka's permanent replacement. The band plays fan favorites and songs from its fourth album The Other One  at the Masonic. Opening acts on the two nights will be different, with hyper-technical British power metal band DrangonForce playing Wednesday and theatrical LA-based melodic death metallers Nekrogoblikon kicking off the show Thursday.

Dethklok and Babymetal Wednesday-Thursday, April 24-25, 6 p.m. $75.75 The Masonic
