Tour description
In the 1 hour Puffin Express tour you will sail from central Reykjavik in a custom made RIB safari boat, specially designed to get you as close as possible to the small islands, it’s wildlife & the beautiful puffins.
Why I think you'll love this puffin adventure! 🧡
I believe this tour is a MUST DO if you're in Iceland during the summer for a few reasons. To begin with, no other tour will get you closer to the islands, the beautiful puffins & the north sea! The boat ride on the rib safari boat is also incredibly FUN & exciting!
Lastly, the tour starts & ends by the old harbor. Just a few minutes walking from most hotels in Reykjavik (no need for long and boring drives to get to the meeting location.)
To sum it up, If you want a truly unforgettable adventure and to get up close & personal with the cutest birds on planet earth - then this tour was made for you!
There is a short taxi out to sea to an island with hundreds of puffins! We saw them flying, hanging out on the island, and swimming around. We event saw some with fish they were carrying back to the island. The guide was great and the ship captain sang an old Icelandic song while heading back. It was a great experience and definitely worth doing!
I almost didn't do this, but then I read a few of the good reviews and booked it. I'm so glad that I did! We saw tons of puffins! It's a nice boat ride, doesn't take too long, and there is a great coffee shop on the dock that you can get a nice strong Irish coffee afterwards
Saw hundreds and hundreds of puffins at sea, overhead and all over Island with our outstanding guide, Iris. Our trip was on a drizzly morning with calm seas, and it turns out that those were ideal conditions, as Iris quickly and accurately explained. Highly recommend this over whale watching - so much more to see and such a unique experience that is available in few locations worldwide.

The best boat tours and cruises from Reykjavik
The world’s northernmost capital city, Reykjavik grew up as a fishing harbour. Today the city spreads along the waterfront, and the sea still plays an important role in locals’ daily life.
So, it’s no surprise that boat tours are big business – and there’s no shortage of trips and cruises to choose from.
Whale-watching is the big ticket boat tour from Reykjavik – and taking one of these tours is really not to be missed. But if you’re in town for a while, you can also go on puffin cruises, white-river rafting trips and northern-lights spotting trips.
We’ve sussed out some of the best boat trips from Reykjavík, so grab your sea-sickness pills and a warm jumper, and let’s get out onto the ocean.
Our pick of Reykjavik’s best boat tours
Here are some our favourite trips – you can book all of these online, which will help you avoid disappointment, though there are local operators that allow walk-up bookings too.
Whale-watching trips
If you only do one boat tour from Reykjavík, make it a classic whale-watching trip.
This three-hour trip takes in some of Iceland’s most stunning coastline along with the chance to spot minke and humpback whales, harbour porpoises and whale-beaked dolphins.
There are warm indoor cabins in case the weather is cold, experienced guides to tell you all about the sea creatures you’re viewing – and if you don’t see any whales, you get a free ticket to go again another time. You can book the tour here . You can also try this other popular whale watching tour in the same area.
If you’re short of time – and don’t mind a fast, hair-raising trip – you can take this express whale-watching Rib tour . The high-speed boat gets you out to where the animals are basking much quicker, so you can spend longer watching them breach and play.
Puffin cruises
These entertaining and colourful birds nest on two islands, Lundey and Akurey, near Reykjavík.
A traditional wooden boat known as Old Skuli leaves from Reykjavík’s old harbour and heads out into Faxaflói Bay to see the puffin colonies close at hand.
The boat turns off its engine as it approaches the islands, so as not to disturb the birds.
Sightings of Atlantic puffins in their natural habitat are guaranteed, but you may well also see northern fulmars, gulls, Arctic terns, and black guillemots. Book ahead to avoid the crowds .
White-river rafting tour
Running from mid-May to mid-September, this adrenaline-fuelled trip down the beautiful Hvítá River , fed by meltwater from the Langjökull glacier, is an action-packed day out.
You’ll paddle for 7km down the churning rapids of the Hvítá River, exploring the scenic Brúarhlöð Canyon en route.
And if that’s not adventurous enough for you, you can leap into the freezing waters afterwards for a quick dip, then warm up with a relaxing sauna.
The tour starts at the rafting base camp, but pick-ups from several locations in central Reykjavík can be organised.
Ice lagoon boat trip
Fancy a different kind of boat tour? This full-day trip starts in Reykjavík with a bus ride along Iceland’s stunning south coast, taking in the dramatic Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, where you can walk behind a wall of water.
Next, it’s on to the breathtaking Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, fed by Europe’s largest glacier. Iceland’s deepest glacial lake, its beautiful blue and white waters can be admired from the shores, or you can take a boat trip from April to October.
The boat ventures out onto the calm waters of the lagoon floating past huge icebergs – and you may even spot seals swimming around.
Afterwards, you can have a walk on the black volcanic sand Diamond Beach, and stop in at the traditional village of Vik with its intriguing basalt sea stacks. You can book online with Get Your Guide , which offers free cancellation.
Sea fishing tour
Head out onto the waters of Faxaflói Bay on this fishing excursion , where you’ll spend a few hours fishing for cod, halibut, haddock, rockfish and pollock.
Experienced fisherfolk are on hand to teach you the ropes if you’re a beginner – and show you the best place to cast your line, if you’re not.
The fishing trip will take you past some beautiful coastal scenery and you’ll get to view the puffin colonies on Lundey and Akurey islands too. After you’ve caught your fill, the crew will fire up the on-board barbecue, where you can cook and eat your tasty catch.
Northern lights luxury yacht tour
Of course, Iceland is one of the world’s best destinations for northern-lights-spotting, so why not head out to sea on this luxurious boat and admire the spectacular light display from one of its three panoramic decks – or even from the comfortable bar and lounge.
Warm blankets are provided for those on deck and you can sample Icelandic delicacies such as shark and the local liquor brennivin too. And if the lights don’t appear during your cruise, you’ll be offered a free trip at a later date. Book ahead!
Tips for taking a boat trip in Reykjavik
Wondering where the boats leave from, or how to maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights? These FAQs will help you out!
Where do most of the boat trips leave from?
Most of the big boat and Rib trips leave from Reykjavík’s main old harbour, known as Ægisgarður.
Trips out to the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and white-river rafting trips involve a bus ride first: some companies will pick up at your accommodation, others ask you to meet at their central offices – check when you book.
Do boat trips run all year-round?
The best time of year for whale-watching trips in Reykjavik is from April to October, with peak viewing months being June, July and August.
Tours do go out over the winter months, weather permitting, but bear in mind that the seas around Iceland can be rough at the best of times – and very rough in winter – so be prepared for a bumpy ride, and trips to be cancelled if weather conditions are poor.
Where can I buy tickets?
You can buy tickets from the boat trip company’s ticket offices around the harbour or in advance online.
Am I guaranteed to see whales on a whale-watching trip?
The chances of seeing whales from April to October are high but, of course, they are wild creatures and don’t always swim close enough to shore for guaranteed viewing.
Tours like this one offer free tickets for a second boat trip if you don’t see any whales, so try and schedule your boat tour near the beginning of any trip to Iceland so that you have a chance to go out again if you don’t see whales or if the trip is cancelled due to poor weather.

Humpback whale
DESCRIPTION
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a large baleen whale species belonging to the rorquals. Its head is broad and rounded when viewed from above, but slim in profile. The body is not as streamlined as other rorquals, but is quite round, narrowing to a slender tail. The body is black on the upper side, and mottled black and white on the underside. This colour pattern extends to the flukes, where the pattern is unique to each individual whale.
Humpback whales feed on krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans, and various kinds of small fish. Each whale eats up to 1 and 1/2 tons of food a day.
DISTRIBUTION
North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to their breeding grounds in the Caribbean. In the summertime, they frequent shallow waters around Iceland and come often into the fjords and bays in search of food. The population size in Icelandic waters is uncertain, but is estimated to be around 1,500-1,800 individuals.
Length: 13-17 metres
Weight: 25-40 tons
Worldwide population: 10,000-15,000
Life expectancy: 45-50 years
Minke whale
The common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is a baleen whale species belonging to the rorquals. Its body is counter-shaded-black to dark gray on top, white below. Some minkes have a light-coloured chevron on the back behind the head. Two areas of lighter gray appear on each side: one behind the flippers and another below and forward of the dorsal fin. Minke whales also have a characteristic white band on each flipper, contrasting with its very dark gray top colour. Like all baleen whales, the minke whale has 2 blowholes.
Minke whales feed primarily on krill in the southern hemisphere and on small schooling fish (capelin, cod, herring, pollock) or krill in the northern hemisphere.
The Icelandic minke whale population is estimated to be 50,000 – 60,000 animals.

This unique adventure will take you on a nature hunt on the blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean, offering the chance to see cute little puffins (summer) and whales in their natural habitat. Our specially designed rib boat adds to the entire experience bouncing across the waves and allowing us to get up close and personal with some of the biggest and most intelligent marine creatures to have ever called our planet home. It is an exhilarating and awe-inspiring experience that is a must for anyone visiting the land of fire and ice.
Our adventure begins at Reykjavik's old harbor, where we will board our custom-made RIB boats , perfect for seeing all the magic Icelandic marine life offers. The RIB Boat's intelligent design is based on its shock-absorbing suspension that guarantees they are comfortable as we bounce across the ocean. This, combined with their low design, makes them ideal for wildlife watching. We can go where other boats can't and get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures while always maintaining enough distance that we don't interfere with what they are doing.
Our first stop will be the picturesque island of Akurey , famed for the many adorable puffins that nest there during the summer months. These cute birds have earned the nickname puffin island, although we also see other species, like eiders and arctic tern. We find that this portion of the trip is especially popular with children and families as the puffins' smiling faces are especially appealing to them. Everyone is sure to enjoy seeing these amazing birds in the flesh!
From there, we will continue into Kollafjordur bay – bobbing up and down as we cut a swathe through the white-crested waves of the Atlantic. Whale watching can never be an exact science, and we can't guarantee what you will see during the trip. However, our expert captains have been sailing this bit of sea for many years and will do their utmost to ensure that we see something, using local knowledge and the latest scientific research to give us the best chance of seeing something.
Iceland plays host to more than twenty different species of whale , which appear at varying concentrations and various times of the year. The most common are Minke Whales, Harbour Porpoises, and White-beaked Dolphins, with Orcas and Sperm Whales also visiting regularly. The gargantuan Blue Whale can also be seen on occasion, offering us the chance to see the largest creature to have ever existed!
When we see these majestic creatures in the wild, we are in for an awe-inspiring experience – as they frolic, play or hunt in the water. There is nothing quite like it, and you are bound to be impressed by the intelligence of their hunting methods and the way they propel jets of water out of their blowholes. They truly are some of the most impressive creatures you will ever see, and it is sure to be an experience you will treasure forever.
We will take the scenic route back to Reykjavik, enjoying more of Iceland’s incredible coastal wildlife, including more nesting birds and playful seals. The perfect way to end a wonderful day, combining an adrenaline-pumping boat ride and some truly remarkable wildlife.
We will provide you with all the safety gear you need for the tour, including insulated flotation suits, life-vests, gloves, and goggles. We recommend that you dress in warm clothing for the tour, as the seas around Iceland can be cold no matter the time of year. During the tour, there will always be a professionally trained guide who will keep you safe and tell you everything you need to know about the amazing things you are seeing. We also recommend that you bring a camera to capture all the amazing wildlife that we can see.

How does carbon offsetting work?
We’ve partnered with the Kolviður Fund in a new carbon offsetting program, which passengers can select to participate in at the time of booking.
The Kolviður Fund is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.
Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. During their lifetime the trees absorb carbon and store it in their root system, trunk, and branches. Trees also prevent soil erosion and maintain storage of carbon in the soil.

Premium 1 Hour Puffin Watching RIB Boat Tour from Reykjavik
Description
Explore the rich birdlife just outside of Reykjavík on a RIB boat with this small group fun-filled puffin-watching tour. Those wanting to get to know Iceland's spectacular nature, and do so with a little thrill, should not let this opportunity pass them by.
Puffins are fascinating little creatures that flock to Iceland during the summertime to breed and feed before heading south for the winter. They dig burrows and nest in the hills of three islands just off the coast of Reykjavík and stay there with their little pufflings until they are big enough to fend for themselves. The puffins are often seen flying about or splashing in the sea with a bill full of sand-eel or other prey found in the waters of Faxaflói Bay.
You'll meet your guide at the Old Harbour in Reykjavík where you will be given overalls and assistance with life vests and other necessary equipment before walking you down to the floating pier where your captain awaits you onboard a RIB boat, also known as a Zodiac.
On this premium tour the fast boat can get you quicker and closer to the islands than any other. Therefore you'll have both an optimal view of the puffins, and get more time marvelling at the fantastic birdlife with a small group and personal guidance - each boat only seats 12 passengers !
If the conditions are just right, the captain might turn off the engines completely, so you'll get a pleasant and peaceful experience with the birds by the shores of the nesting islands.
Among other birds frequently spotted on the tour are Auks, Guillemots, Skuas, Arctic terns and Gannets but a variety of other seabirds can often be seen as well. Your specially trained, professional guides will tell you all about the islands, the birds and wildlife seen on the tour, as well as other interesting sights you may come across.
This is one hour tour with multiple daily departures is perfect for those who have limited time in the city or those who want to venture further than the city centre.
