Starting from Adamantas, the first part of our trip consists of sightseeing in the bay of Adamantas. Sailing close to the east coast of the bay, we will pass the first Christian catacombs and the colourful village of Klima, where the statue of Venus de Milo was discovered. While you take beautiful photos you can also learn some historical facts and myths about the island, as a part of our guided tour. We will then reach the ‘Arkoudes’, the impressive 20ft bear-shaped rocks at the entrance of the bay to the east.

With the wind in our sails, we will reach Cape Vani. This impressive 30-meter tall rock that marks the west entrance of the bay was home to one of the first mineral mines of Milos. After seeing the old 19th-century mines quay, we will have our first 20-minute swim at the bay of Kalogries in crystal clear turquoise waters.

Following our swim and some delicious snacks we set sail for Sykia, the biggest and most impressive cave of Milos where we will spend 1 hour. We anchor in the clear green waters of a bay nearby for a swim and take our small dinghy to visit the cave. Once back on the boat, refreshments and ice-cold beers or traditional ouzo accompanied by some delicious snacks will be waiting for us.

Our next stop is Kleftiko; the old pirates-lair where we will spend around two hours. This unique complex of tall limestone rocks is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world! Snorkeling here is an amazing experience. We provide you with masks, flippers, and after a few tips on what you can do and let you swim and explore. You can also try Stand-Up paddling here. We will then take our dinghy and go explore the unique, diverse beauty of Kleftiko caves and take pictures. Getting back to the boat we will have our lunch.

We then will start making our way back to Adamas port, provided there is time, we will make a short 15-minute swim stop at the bay of Agios Dimitrios with a beautiful view of the Milos caldera.

Cruise itinerary is subject to change depending on weather conditions and at the discretion of the captain. In case of strong north winds, we will start the cruise from the south side of Milos. Transfer to and from the port of Adamas is offered and included in the price. In case of south winds, we will sail the north side of Milos and visit the inaccessible beaches of Kimolos & Poliegos.

This cruise is organized by our tourist office Polco Tours, Greek Ministry of Tourism License 1172E60001075001.

  • Chevron down What to bring

Everything You Need to Know about Kleftiko Bay: The Hidden Pirate Den of Milos

last Updated: February 15, 2023 greece milos

FYI: Affiliate links may be sprinkled throughout the awesome, free content you see below. I’ll receive a small commission when you purchase from my links (at no extra cost to you), which I’ll totally blow on adult things like boba tea and avocado toast. As always, thanks for the support.

Headed to the Greek Islands soon? You NEED to spend an afternoon at Kleftiko Beach in Milos. I swear — the water is an absolute dream! Read on for literally everything you need to know about this stunning spot — how to pick the perfect boat tour, when to go, what to bring, and more!

Ohhhh, Kleftiko. If you’ve been researching Milos at all, I can almost guarantee you’ve seen photos of these magical caves and bright underwater world — it’s one of the most popular spots in all of Milos afterall! And for good reason!

There’s sea caves and rock formations to explore, clear, turquoise-tinted waters, and volcanic landscapes to admire.  The crystal blue waters are absolutely irresistible — I couldn’t wait to jump on in

Headed to the Greek Islands soon? You NEED to spend an afternoon at Kleftiko Beach in Milos. Here's everything you need to know!

And apparently pirates used to hide out in the caves over here. Our captain even turned on music from Pirates of the Caribbean as we made our way into Kleftiko Beach. Definitely set the scene, that’s for sure! Kinda like how our pilot played Jurassic Park on our helicopter ride in Hawaii — so fun!

For reals though — this is the place to be on Milos Island. Everybody goes there! It’s easily one of the best hidden gems of the Cyclades; aka you NEED to get here before it becomes way over-popular and super crowded.

What’s so special about it anyways? The impressive white volcanic rocks in all shapes and sizes, the elaborate sea caves, and the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea. Everything feels dreamy, slow, and calm over here; a true Grecian paradise. It’s certainly one of the most unique places on the planet (well, besides Sarakiniko Beach of course — also in Milos)!

Headed to the Greek Islands soon? You NEED to spend an afternoon at Kleftiko Beach in Milos. Here's everything you need to know!

I’m sharing all my tips for visiting Kleftiko Beach in Milos, so keep on reading! But if you wanna learn more about Milos Island (where you’ll find Kleftiko Beach), make sure you read this — I wrote a massive guide to everything we did on the island.

And if you’re a sucker for stunning beaches like I am, here’s my super comprehensive guide to the best beaches and swimming spots on Milos (you’re welcome!). 🙂

Kleftiko Beach Information

Wait — beach or bay.

Kleftiko isn’t actually a beach at all — although almost everyone calls it Kleftiko Beach! It’s not a beach in the classic sense with sand or pebbles, but more a calm bay for swimming (with hardly any waves). Instead, it’s the unique coastal views with massive volcanic rocks that makes the area so dramatic and note-worthy!

So don’t expect to lay out and sunbathe on the sand; you won’t find any of that here. There are some flat rocks you can get comfy on, but I’d much prefer to be cooling off in the turquoise waters instead.

How Kleftiko Bay Was Formed and A Little Bit of History

Can you believe the power of the sea and wild wind storms created this rare geological phenomena? I mean, the caves and volcanic arches obviously weren’t created overnight, but over centuries and centuries. Such a sight to see. I’m always amazed at what Mother Nature can do.

But even more impressively, pirates used to hang out here!

Yes, real-life pirates used to hide out here at Kleftiko Beach! The pirates used to rest here and organize their attacks on whatever ships appeared in sight (I mean, just look at those caves — they’re the perfect hiding place). Makes sense, as the word Kleftiko comes from the ancient Greek word “Kleftis”, which actually means thief/robber! In literal translation though, Kleftiko means stolen meat, haha.

But don’t worry — you won’t find any pirates here today. Only visiting catamarans with snorkelers and swimmers! Thankfully they stopped attacking boats in the early 1820’s after Admiral Kanaris protected the Aegean Islands from all the nasty pirates! And thank goodness he did!

Planning a Trip to Kleftiko Beach in Milos

Where is kleftiko beach.

You’ll find Kleftiko Bay in Milos, Greece, an island in the Cyclades (which is actually the same group of islands as the super-popular Santorini and Mykonos ). More specifically, it’s located along the southwestern coast of Milos, far away from the amenities and towns on the eastern half of the island.

Be careful when searching Google Maps though — there’s apparently a whole bunch of spots in Greece called Kleftiko. You’re looking for the rugged and remote Kleftiko Bay in southwest Milos. You’ll know when you find it on the map, I promise.

Like other Greek Islands, Milos (including Kleftiko Bay) is best explored from May through September , coinciding with the busy tourist season. But in my opinion, late spring and early autumn are the best times to visit, as it’s not as hot and sticky and less crowded. It’s never a horrible time to visit though: the island is blessed with a Mediterranean climate — meaning mild temps, warm water, and relatively calm seas year round.

Do know that Milos (like other Greek islands) experiences strong winds (called Meltemi) from June through August. Because of this, it’s possible boat tours to Kleftiko can get cancelled for safety reasons. I recommend booking your boat tour as early in your trip as possible JUST IN CASE it needs to be rebooked to the next day.

For reference, we visited Milos and Kleftiko Beach in mid-July, and had beautiful weather. Yes, it was pretty hot and sticky, but we were at the beach most of the time, so we just cooled off in the water! Plus, the summer winds actually helped cool down the air so we never felt absolutely gross.

Headed to the Greek Islands soon? You NEED to spend an afternoon at Kleftiko Beach in Milos. Here's everything you need to know!

What to do at Kleftiko Bay, Milos

I’m sure you get it by now — swim, snorkel, take in the scenery, soak up the sun! I loved jumping in the crystal clear water, putting on a snorkel mask, and exploring beneath the surface. It’s remarkably clear, and you can see all the way to the bottom, despite it being pretty freakin’ deep! There’s some small fish to see, but definitely not the best snorkeling I’ve ever done, so don’t expect tons of tropical fish or anything. Still fun to see them swimming around though!

My favorite part of the afternoon?! Swimming in the caves where the pirates used to hang out! Kinda freaky when you think about it but don’t miss that! And of course make sure to take all the photos you want — the rock formations are just oh so cool!

Facilities at Kleftiko and What to Bring

Since Kleftiko is super off-the-beaten-path when it comes to beaches and swimming spots in Milos , you won’t find any facilities over here. Meaning no lounge chairs, no beach bar, no toilets, etc. And I honestly don’t even know where they’d be, haha. Like I mentioned earlier, there’s no real sandy beach over here; Kleftiko is solely a swimming spot.

If you’re coming to Kleftiko by boat (which most people do), your tour will most likely supply you with what you absolutely need → a bathroom, snacks, drinks, and snorkel gear! You’ll wanna bring along a towel, a dry bag to keep your belongings nice and dry, some SPF (I always pack SPF lip balm, too), a sunhat, sunglasses, and a sense of adventure. You don’t wanna bring much (wear a bathing suit of course), but enough to keep yourself comfortable in the water and on the boat.

Headed to the Greek Islands soon? You NEED to spend an afternoon at Kleftiko Beach in Milos. Here's everything you need to know!

How Long to Stay

If you really wanna explore all there is at Kleftiko, you’ll need at least an hour and a half to 2 full hours over here. I could have spent a whole day swimming in the crystal clear waters and through the wild caves!

Our boat trip ventured over to Kleftiko Bay after making stops at Poliegos Island (swoon), Gerakas Beach (double swoon), and a few other beaches along the way. Because of this, we only had an hour or so to swim around, but didn’t mind since we had already made plenty of other swimming spots.

How to Get to Kleftiko, Milos

Getting to Kleftiko Beach is no easy feat. You can’t just drive up to the beach and go for a quick swim like you can in Sarakiniko or Fyriplaka .

You’ll of course first need to get yourself over to Milos, which isn’t terribly hard if you’re already in Greece. From Athens, you can reach Milos by plane in a little over an hour, or in 2-3 hours via high speed ferry. You can also take a ferry from other islands in the Cyclades, like Santorini or Mykonos , which is what we did!

→ Read this for much more detailed info on how to get to Milos (and other practicalities and things to know!).

And once you do get yourself over to Milos Island, it does take some planning to get to Kleftiko. It’s on the south coast of the rugged and remote western side of the isla nd afterall, the complete opposite where most people spend the night. But I promise it’s worth the small hassle… if you can really call a luxurious boat ride a hassle, haha.

Headed to the Greek Islands soon? You NEED to spend an afternoon at Kleftiko Beach in Milos. Here's everything you need to know!

By Boat (Catamaran Cruise or Luxury Yacht)

The only way to reach Kleftiko is by boat! Meaning you’ll need to book yourself on a guided boat tour around Milos if you wanna explore this old Pirate den! Here’s the exact catamaran cruise we took — spoiler alert, it’s gonna be one of your favorite days in Greece, I can tell you that.

There’s tons of boat companies which stop at Kleftiko Beach in Milos, so finding a tour shouldn’t be hard — as long as you book in advance! Kleftiko is the most visited attraction of all of Milos (well, a close second to Sarakiniko ), so definitely don’t wait too long to book.

I know someone who unfortunately missed out on the Kleftiko caves since all the boats were completely sold out when she and her husband visited! Whoops — don’t be that person! Guarantee your spot and book way in advance. If you already have your ferry ticket to Milos, just book this cruise right now and thank me later. Trust me, you don’t wanna miss out.

Different tour itinerary options:

Since everyone wants to swim at Kleftiko Bay (I mean, just look at it!), there’s thankfully a whole bunch of boat options on the island! Most boats provide their guests with snorkels and fins free of charge (you’ll definitely want these), as well as meals. The catamaran cruise we chose (highly recommended) gave us plenty of fresh fruit and snacks, a whole spread of Greek specialities for lunch, and lots of yummy drinks! We definitely never went hungry!

And besides the actual company of the boat, you can choose to do a full-day, half-day, or mini cruise to Kleftiko Beach. We chose the longest one and had no regrets! Here’s your itinerary options:

  • Circumnavigate the entire island of Milos: Want a full day out on the water exploring the best that Milos has to offer? You need to book this full-day catamaran tour! Not only does the tour visit Kleftiko Bay, but it makes stops at Gerakas Beach and Poliegos, a neighboring island. Of course it’s a bit pricier than the others, but well worth the extra expense in our eyes. I’ll never get over those turquoise waters.
  • Visit Kleftiko and other stops on the southern coast: You’ll find many boat tours skipping Poliegos and heading straight to the ruggest southwestern coast for lots of time at Kleftiko! On this half-day cruise , Kleftiko will be the main attraction but you’ll also get to see some other stunning spots!
  • Head straight to Kleftiko: After doing some research, I learned you can take a boat from Agia Kyriaki beach for about 30 euro per person for about FOUR hours here! What a dream! If you’re pressed for time or need to stick to a strict budget, this may work in your favor. Although I’m so glad we made the other stops on our full-day catamaran tour ( look here for some photos — absolutely remarkable)!

milos tour kleftiko

Our catamaran cruise around Milos was easily one of our favorite days on our Greece itinerary. I’m honestly still raving about it to anyone and everyone who’ll listen (sorry not sorry)!

Psst — most boat tours to Kleftiko leave from Adamas Port (where we stayed), but it’s always wise to check!

Recommended Boat Tours to Kleftiko (and Beyond)

  • Full-Day Tour of Milos and Poliegos Islands: If you’re keen on seeing as much as possible of the coast of Milos, you NEED to book this tour. It’s the EXACT one we booked, and I can honestly say I’d choose this catamaran cruise again in a heartbeat. We had ample time at Kleftiko, but also got to visit the blue waters of Poliegos Island, Gerakas Beach, and some other inaccessible spots for swimming/beach time. And ohhh — that Greek salad sando was the perfect snack after a quick dip. Read reviews and book catamaran cruise here!
  • Safari Rib Tour to Kleftiko and Beyond : Would rather spend the day on a luxurious yacht? This tour is for you. Not only does it visit some fishing villages and other beaches, but you get to take a small rib boat (way smaller than the yacht) to cruise in between the actual caves of Kleftiko! And plus, the crew takes bangin’ underwater photos of you! Read reviews and book safari rib cruise here .
  • Half-Day Morning Cruise to Kleftiko and Gerakas: If you don’t wanna be out on the water the entire day (I hear you, that’s a long time on a boat), there’s plenty of half day cruises you can book! This 5-hour catamaran cruise is offered by the same company we took, so I can definitely vouch for the crew and food! They obviously don’t make as many stops, but the half day tours are great for a quick sampling of the island. Read reviews and book your half-day cruise here!

By Foot: Hiking to Kleftiko Bay

Okay, so you can actually hike to Kleftiko Bay. It’s not advertised on many Kleftiko Beach blogs. BUT it’s a long 45 minute walk (after an hour’s drive from Adamas on unpaved roads), and in that hot summer heat, honestly, no thank you! If you really wanna hike to Kleftiko, do it first thing in the morning to avoid the midday sun (and bring lots and lots of water).

I’ve heard the hike is of varying degrees of difficulty from different people — some say it’s pretty easy while others deem it as quite treacherous! Maybe there’s multiple ways to hike there?! The trailhead is located about a km past the Monastery of St. John Siderianos. Regardless, just remember you’ll need to hike back up after your time at the beach — sooooo… yea. Expect to be dripping with sweat afterwards.

A positive to hiking? You will be greeted with gorgeous bird eye views from above if you hike to Kleftiko, which you obviously won’t get from a boat! Unless you have a drone of course!

Have I convinced you to add a catamaran cruise to Kleftiko to your time in Milos? I can’t wait to jump into that turquoise-tinted water again — hopefully sooner than later!

Snorkeling boat tour to Kleftiko

General description.

Explore the most fantastic sea region of Milos in a sailing boat, along with guided snorkeling tours in the sea caves of the Kleftiko pirate bay and a Greek lunch.

The boat departs from the port of Adamas , passing by the traditional fishing villages of Milos, with their characteristic boat garages on the ground floor of the houses. A few miles later, we will see some impressive rock formations in the sea called Arkoudes , meaning bears in Greek.

As we sail, we will meet Cape Vani and its extraordinary rock formations. Heading past the west coast, we pass by Agathia , Triades , and Ammoudaraki beaches, as well as the monastery of Agios Ioannis Siderianos !

Afterwards, we arrive at the stunning Kleftiko , boasting gorgeous volcanic landscape with huge rocks coming out of the sea and the sea caves! This place was a pirate hideout for more than a thousand years! This is the time to wear a snorkeling mask and dive in the crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea. This guided snorkeling tour will also allow you to capture underwater photos of yourself and the sea bottom!

After all these activities, it will be time to enjoy a lunch meal on board. Continue sailing along the beautiful coasts of Milos to the colourful seashores of Agios Dimitrios or Klima , a fine spot to stop for a quick swim before heading back to the port of Adamas.

A Quick Recap of the Tour to Kleftiko Milos

Boat tour highlights & stops.

⛵️ Duration: 4 to 8 hours

  • Swim in the Aegean Sea
  • Visit Kleftiko Beach
  • Excursion tour to Kleftiko caves
  • Explore Sikia Caves
  • Sailing by the white rocks of Sarakinko beach

On this half-day trip , you will take a trip to West Milos and spend an amazing day getting to know the island!

You will start your perfect day on the turquoise waters and pass by Gerakas beach ! It is one of the most beautiful spots on Milos Island.

Then you will have the choice if you want to stop here and spend a little time swimming in the crystal clear waters. I highly recommend it!

A striking rock formation with a natural archway stands in the blue waters of Milos. The rocks are layered with different shades of beige and brown, indicating weathering over time. The clear sky above and tranquil sea below highlight the natural beauty of the geological structure.

Next pass by one of the hidden gems, Tsigrado Beach , which is only accessible by sea. Here you make a short excursion to small caves before heading to your next stop.

The special event of the day is when you arrive at Kleftiko Beach ! This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to in my life.

I still dream of the turquoise waters and the incredible time soaking in the Aegean Sea.

The crew suggested we spend an hour and a half here at Kleftiko Bay , but they are flexible on how you want to spend your time on this sailing cruise.

The clear water at Kleftiko Bay is the perfect place to swim and do some snorkeling.

Alternatively, you can remain on board and relax on the boat and enjoy some drinks and delicious food prepared by the crew.

The highlight of these boat tours is definitely when you enter the spectacular Sikia cave.

You’ll cruise the boat through its winding passages, and it’s a sight to behold. The milky white volcanic rocks illuminated by the sun create an unforgettable atmosphere – one that can only be experienced from the comfort of a smaller boat.

This day-long trip can be altered to your preferences, which I appreciate.

The crew will have a great suggestion on how to spend the day, but ultimately it is up to you! For an unforgettable experience in Milos, book your tour today !

Best Time to Take a Private Cruise in Milos

The summer months are the peak season in Milos , but the summer sun can be a bit too hot at times.

If you have the possibility of taking your sailing cruise around Milos in mid-May or mid-September, I would highly recommend it.

All the tours are booked up very quickly in the summer, so keep that in mind.

As one might imagine summer is the busiest time of year on the island of Milos, so if you’re looking for something a bit more exclusive then opt for an earlier date in the season.

Not only will you get better weather, but you’ll also have a much quieter experience out on the sea.

No matter what time of year you decide to take your private cruise in Milos, it’s sure to be an unforgettable adventure!

So make sure to book your spot now and get ready for an amazing day out on the waters of Milos Island.

Walking to Kleftiko Beach

I've visited Kleftiko twice now, and the second time we decided to hike to Kleftiko beach. It's not for the lazy or faint-hearted though!

When hiking to Kleftiko Bay, you can expect some steep rough sections of trail. You even end up going through a reserve for poisonous snakes at one point – I'm not joking!

If this has brought out the Indiana Jones in you and you want to go ahead, here's how:

First, you'll need to drive to the Monastery of St. John Siderianos. You can find it on Google maps .

Taking the hiking trail to Kleftiko Bay in Milos

About a kilometre past the monastery you'll find the trailhead for Kleftiko is marked with some areas for parking vehicles.

Walk to the trailhead where you'll see a sign, and then follow the trail for about 40 minutes until you get to the beach. You'll want to wear some sturdy hiking shoes, and take plenty of water and sunblock for both the hike and the time at Kleftiko!

Looking down onto the bay from the hiking trail at Kleftiko in MIlos

Note: On the way back you'll be hiking uphill, so best leave the beach when it's not quite so hot. Never underestimated the strength of the Greek sun during the summer!

Things to do in Milos Kleftiko

Now you're at the beach, what can you do? Well, if you're on a boat trip, your schedule will be set by the captain. Normally, you'll have some time for a swim and photos. You may even end up having lunch on the boat there depending on how the boat tour has been timed with stops.

Hiking To Kleftiko Bay In Milos Greece

Kleftiko Bay is one of the most iconic spots in Milos, and possibly the whole of Greece. While most people visit on a boat tour, it’s actually possible to hike to Kleftiko Bay in Milos. Here’s how to do it!

Hiking to Kleftiko beach in Milos Greece

Kleftiko Beach Milos Greece

Milos in Greece is getting more and more famous. This beautiful Cycladic island combines unique landscapes with dozens of spectacular beaches.

It’s ideal if you want to explore the outdoors and experience a popular Greek island which has mostly retained its natural charm.

Seeing the impressive Kleftiko Bay in Milos at the end of our hike

One of the most visited places in Milos is Kleftiko, a remote, secluded bay on the southwest side of the island. If you are planning to visit Greece, you will most likely have seen the iconic white rocks coming out of the sea.

The bay is famous for its pretty rock formations, seacaves and wild feel. It’s often included in lists of the best beaches in Greece .

Boat tours to Kleftiko Bay

Most people visit Kleftiko Bay on a boat tour. There are plenty of boat trips to choose from .

Some full-day trips begin in Adamas, the main port in the island of Milos, and stop at several other beaches on the way. Depending on weather, they may reach the nearby Polyaigos island.

In most cases, the exact itinerary will probably be decided on the day. It really depends on winds, which tend to change frequently, especially if you are visiting during the meltemi season .

Other tours begin on the south beaches of the island, like Agia Kyriaki and Kipoi. They may include a couple of other stops on the way to Kleftiko.

Not everyone knows that it’s possible to hike to Kleftiko Bay. In fact, many travel guides don’t even mention the hiking path! Here’s some more information to help you decide if this is for you.

Hiking to Kleftiko Bay

Let’s hike to Kleftiko, he said. It will be fun, he said. I actually quite enjoy hiking, so I said yes.

Dave hiking to Kleftiko Greece

The first time we visited Milos, we had taken a full-day boat trip from Adamas port to Kleftiko , with Chrysovalandou boat. It was a very enjoyable day overall. We had visited many beaches and coves in Milos and the nearby Polyegos island.

When we returned to Milos, we decided to try the more adventurous option and hike to Kleftiko Bay. In fact, we were torn between the hike and a shorter boat trip from Kipoi, but it wasn’t running on that week.

You will need proper hiking shoes for the hike to Kleftiko

As there had been some recent rainfall, I asked some locals what the trail was like nowadays. They told me that the hiking path was in good condition, but we should definitely wear closed shoes as the island of Milos has snakes.

Snakes? Yikes.

In fact, not just snakes, but a type of red viper, whose bite is poisonous, and potentially lethal. Yikes.

To make things worse, our landlady’s sister had been bitten by one of those a couple of years ago. She then had to be transferred to Athens to get the antidote!!! Yikes.

Nevermind. I decided to ignore that piece of information and go for the hike anyway. However, for once I took the hiking shoes advice very seriously.

Hiking shoes for Kleftiko Milos

We packed lots of water, a few snacks, my snorkelling gear, a ton of sunblock and all our cameras and gadgets, and off we were.

Hiking path to Kleftiko Bay

In order to hike to Kleftiko Bay, you first need to get to the beginning of the hiking path. This is conveniently marked on Google Maps as “ Access for path to Kleftiko beach by hike ”.

In order to get here, you’d need to hire some sort of vehicle. We have our own old and trusted Toyota Starlet, which seems to think it’s a 4WD.

People who don’t have their own vehicle should rent a small 4WD or maybe a quad. My article on driving in Greece should help.

Driving on dirt roads to reach the hiking path to Kleftiko in Milos Greece

You will need to follow the road all the way to the Monastery of St John Siderianos . If you are departing from Adamas, follow the asphalt road to Agia Marina church. From then on, the road is a dirt road.

At the time we drove there, the road all the way to the Monastery was in great condition, as the monastery was getting ready for a celebration. This part is roughly 10 kilometres.

Monastery of St John Milos Greece

The next 2 kilometres from the monastery to the beginning of the hiking path aren’t great. If you have hired a conventional car it’s probably best to leave it at the monastery’s parking and continue on foot.

I don’t think the insurance would cover you in case of an accident or break down.

It is possible to get to the beginning of the path through the south road, passing by Kipoi, Gerontas and Xylokeratia. This road was in much worse shape when we drove around Milos, so don’t try it in a hired car, unless it’s a 4WD.

Here’s a full guide on how to get around Milos , including car and ATV rentals.

The hike to Kleftiko beach

We dropped the car at the beginning of the path, where there were two 4WDs. There is a wooden sign saying “Kleftiko” there, so you can’t miss it.

There was also a yellow sign, informing us that hunting was allowed in the area. So now we had to watch out not only for the red vipers, but also for hunters. Very reassuring 😊

Sign to the walking path to Kleftiko beach Milos Greece

The first few minutes of the hike were very, very smooth. Now and then, we could see some rocks that had been marked with white paint, so we knew we were on the right track.

Still, this trail wasn’t as clearly marked as other hiking paths we have tried, like for example the hike to Katergo beach in Folegandros .

Parts of the hiking path to Kleftiko are flat

Soon, the track became quite steep, and I was glad for my lovely footwear. That said, I wished I had “worn them in” a little more before trying them on an actual hike.

Going from several months of wearing sandals to hiking in fairly new shoes is never a great idea. Oh well!

Kleftiko Beach from above

After about a half hour, we could see the famous bay from above. In fact, the hike is worth it for the views alone, as it offers a unique perspective.

Kleftiko beach Milos as seen from the walking trail from above

There were several boats of all sorts in the bay, including a massive yacht. This was very different from the last time we had been to Milos, when there were rather few boats.

It took us about fifty minutes to an hour to get to Kleftiko, including all the necessary photo-stops. We ended up on a flat grey rock, where we put our towels. We were then off for a swim and some underwater exploration.

Unfortunately, the sea wasn’t super clear on the day we were there. There had been some strong south winds on the previous days, which made the seabed rather murky.

Vanessa at Kleftiko Bay Milos

When there is no wind, snorkeling here is really spectacular, and the seacaves are pretty amazing.

Hiking back from Kleftiko beach

We spent a couple of hours on the rocks, and then decided we had had too much sun, so we started making our way back. It only took us about 45 minutes to get back to the car.  I guess we didn’t stop for as many photos this time.

That said, part of the path on the way back was rather steep. In combination with the unusually humid weather, I found it a lot more tiring.

Granted, we had actually managed to finish our two big bottles of water by the time we got back! It was an excellent idea to bring a third bottle with us.

Before we returned to Adamas, we stopped at the nearby Agios Ioannis beach for an hour. This is a long, sandy beach, which seems to be little visited.

A duck on Agios Ioannis beach Milos

If you are hiking to Kleftiko, bring sunblock, hats, snorkeling gear, LOTS of water, and definitely hiking shoes. Even though we didn’t see any snakes (and I’m glad), some parts of the path wouldn’t be easy to do in sandals.

I love my hiking Teva sandals , but I was happy I left them behind on this occasion.

Sailing boats in Kleftiko Bay Milos Greece

All things considered, I wouldn’t call it a difficult hike. Still, the humidity and zero wind on that day made it uncomfortable on the way back. Imagine that we did the hike on 25 September!

I would personally avoid it in July and August, when the weather is warmer. Here’s a little more information on the best time to visit Milos and Kimolos in Greece .

Note that there is no real beach at Kleftiko – there is just a rock, and no shade. A couple of hours there was enough for us, and other people spent even less time. I wouldn’t call Kleftiko an ideal spot to relax – but it’s great to visit for the experience.

Snorkeling at Kleftiko Milos Greece

Last tip – Kleftiko will not be enjoyable on a day with strong south winds. In this case, go to Sarakiniko and the other north beaches instead.

Boat tour vs hiking to Kleftiko Beach

I’ve been to Kleftiko both on a boat tour and hiking, and I enjoyed visiting both times. Here are my impressions.

All in all, a boat tour to Kleftiko Bay is more relaxed. All you need to do is swim, snorkel, and work on your tan while on the boat. In addition, on most tours, you will get to try some delicious Greek food, and there is often music involved.

You can see details and book a boat tour here: full-day boat tour around Milos and Kleftiko Bay .

Boats in Kleftiko Bay Greece

At the same time, a hike offers a different perspective, and you will see some interesting landscapes on the way, as well as the monastery.

Moreover, you can justify a massive Greek meal afterwards. Not that a massive Greek meal really needs to be justified when you are on vacation, but just saying.

Speaking of which, I can totally recommend to Bakalikon tou Galani in Triovasalos where we went on that evening. They have various small, inexpensive plates, and we absolutely loved everything we ordered.

That was a dinner very well-deserved, and we were too hungry to take photos, hah!

Overall, if you only have 2-3 days in Milos, I recommend going on the boat tour , as you will see more beaches. If you have several days though, I totally suggest trying the hike, if you are happy with the temperature.

Kleftiko beach Milos Greece

And how about people who don’t want to spend a full day on the boat, but aren’t too keen on hiking either? In this case, you can get the half day trip from one of the south beaches.

Just ask around at your hotel, or any of the agencies in Adamas, and they will be happy to help.

Hi and welcome to my blog! I am Vanessa from Athens, and I love exploring my country. Hiking to Kleftiko Beach in Milos Greece

4 thoughts on “Hiking To Kleftiko Bay In Milos Greece”

Hello Thank you for this blog entry it was very helpful. I would like to go to Kleftiko by boat but then hike to the top for some pictures and then back to the beach (yes I will bring closed shoes 😉 ). My question is, could you show me on a map or with pictures where exactly the hiking trail from the beach view is? Thank you in advance.

Hello! Unfortunately it’s very hard to explain in words. You would need to jump off your boat, swim to the rocks (there is no proper beach), get out of the sea and then hike up the top of the hill towards this spot . I think it would take you about 15 minutes to walk up the hill, then another 10-15 back down. Your boat captain should be able to point you to the right direction, though as you understand it’s in their interest to say the path doesn’t even exist 🙂 Make sure you ask how long your boat is staying in Kleftiko, you don’t want to be left behind!! Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this post!! We weren’t keen on spending 250 euros (boat 150 plus petrol 100) to boat in ourselves and opted for a big quad (600cc but less would’ve done the job, 140 euros for two days) and used it to access this hike this morning (July 2022). The hike is easy enough (took 45mins – hour both ways), apparently there’s no vipers in July (although we were obviously cautious) and once at the bottom we set out on a big swim through all the caves etc. and had the best time. Goggles helped a lot because obviously we couldn’t just boat around to various caves hence swimming that far is made easier with goggles. Felt very satisfying to still have a great time at kleftico and save some money, and then to be able to use our quad for the rest of the day to keep exploring the southern part of the island.

We took five 1.5 litres of water given the heat and used three of them, noting it’s good to have extra as we kept driving around and there’s not many services/ restaurants at that part of the island!

Given the 600cc quad we decided to keep travelling east past the walk afterwards. We were nervous as we didn’t know the road condition (marked as ‘rough dirt road’). It was okay to drive on however you would want to feel confident as a driver to do it. Our quad had 4WD capabilities and that really helped us feel more confident.

Thank you so much again! Great post and really appreciated

Thanks for your comment – it really made my day! I’m very glad you enjoyed your time on the “rough dirt roads” in Milos 🙂

This Might Be the Most Photogenic Island in Greece — With a Moon-like Landscape, Gorgeous Sea Caves, and Some of the Bluest Water You've Ever Seen

Here’s your ultimate guide to Milos, the low-key Cycladic island that became an Instagram sensation.

With its winning trifecta of sandy beaches, boutique hotels, and unpretentious tavernas, the Greek island of Milos seduces couples, water lovers, and gastronomes alike. There's no denying the Cycladic isle, where the famed Venus de Milo marble statue was unearthed by a farmer in 1820, is breathlessly romantic. Otherworldly landscapes sculpted by wind and sea shot to fame via Instagram in recent years, transforming the once low-profile island into a sought-after hot spot.

Rich in minerals and precious metals, Milos has been mined since the Neolithic era, starting with obsidian. Its volcanic origins explain the kaleidoscope of colors gracing the rugged cliffs and coastlines. But tourism wasn’t taken seriously here until recently. Today, Milos features prominently among Travel + Leisure ’s World’s Best Award-winning destinations . Travelers are drawn to natural phenomena like the bone-white cliffs of former pirate lair Kleftiko and Sikia sea cave with azure waters ideal for snorkeling. Top of the list for travelers are two beaches: Papafragas and the lunar-like Sarakiniko. And let’s not forget the traditional technicolor boathouses.

"Milos offers the cultural connection many of today’s travelers are seeking," Mina Agnos , a T+L A-List advisor and founder of Travelive , said. It's ideal for those looking for a “laid-back vacation focused on culture, beaches, food, yachting, and relaxation,” she added. Foodie experiences, island tours, and boat charters are especially popular, but with limited hotel inventory, early booking is key, notes Agnos.

Here’s how to plan the perfect island escape to Milos, Greece.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Explore the moonscape-like beach of Sarakiniko. The bravest dive into a cobalt Aegean below.
  • Stroll around the small fishing village of Klima, where traditional boathouses come in all shades of the rainbow.
  • Take a boat tour of Kleftiko and Sykia sea cave, best seen from a private yacht charter.
  • Catch the sunset from a church courtyard in the island capital of Plaka.
  • Chow down on delicious, farm-to-table food at O! Hamos!, Milos’ best-loved taverna.

Melian Boutique Hotel & Spa

Honeymooners flock to Melian Boutique Hotel & Spa , set on manicured grounds on the island’s northeastern tip. According to Agnos, “the little oasis” is a consistent winner with clients — not only for its personalized attention, but also for its waterfront location in Pollonia and romantic design, which includes four-poster brass beds.

Milos Breeze Boutique Hotel

A family-owned property with warm service, Milos Breeze Boutique Hotel is a firm favorite among travelers. “It really conveys the feeling of the island and makes people feel like they’re being welcomed into somebody’s home,” said Agnos. Plus, its elevated location lends an air of seclusion and delivers panoramic views of Pollonia.

Domes White Coast Milos

Situated on the northern coast, Domes White Coast Milos is “a little more remote,” but worth the extra effort to reach for the high-end service, according to Agnos. A member of upscale Greek hotel brand Domes Resorts, the adults-only property has 30 white suites with uninterrupted sea views, and Sarakiniko is just a seven-minute drive away.

Courtesy of Skinopi Lodge

Skinopi Lodge

With seven, secluded, stone-built villas perched on a scrubby hillside above the island’s deep natural harbor, this sublime retreat was fashioned for the wild at heart. Surrounded by olive trees, thyme, and lavender, Skinopi Lodge offers a contemporary take on traditional syrmata. Even better, a private swimming spot lies just few steps away.

White Pebble Suites

A dream come true for its three Greek-Australian female founders, White Pebble Suites throws a curveball at classic Cycladic architecture. Sinuous lines flow between the 12 cream-hued suites of this design-savvy couple favorite in Pollonia. Earthy textiles, polished cement, and wicker accents make for a soothing blend.

Visit an otherworldly beach.

Formed from volcanic pumice sculpted by the wind and sea, Sarakiniko’s lunar-like appearance, contrasting with cobalt waters, is surreal. Only the strongest swimmers should consider cliff diving into the sea, which can become rough when northerlies blow through. Kids can explore old mining caves and marvel at a shipwreck washed ashore.

See unique boathouses.

Check out Milos’ traditional boathouses, known as syrmata, where fishermen would store their wooden boats for the winter. Painted in vivid red, blue, green, or yellow shades, many have been converted into ultra-minimalist holiday dwellings. The fishing village of Klima is well-known for its syrmata, but minuscule Firopotamos is equally appealing.

Explore by boat.

“Milos is a great place to charter a sailboat, yacht, or RIB [rigid inflatable boat] because there are so many places only accessible by sea,” said Agnos. Your trusty captain will transport you to the towering limestone cliffs of Kleftiko — once a pirate hideout — Sikia sea cave, or off-radar Polyegos isle to swim in ultramarine waters.

Go on an off-road excursion.

Milos’ western flank is so untamed that it’s off-limits to rental cars. Instead, take an off-road guided tour . Highlights include a visit to an inactive volcano, bird-watching at the Achivadolimni wetlands, and a hike through an abandoned manganese mine. End your day with a refreshing dip at a remote beach.

Uncover geological wonders.

You don’t have to be a science expert to enjoy a tour unearthing Milos’ geological wonders, according to Agnos. You’ll visit the Milos Mining Museum , salt pans, and a sunken crater, among other highlights. Perhaps the most evocative sight is the abandoned sulphur mines, replete with rusted-out wagons and ghostly buildings.

Pore over a fascinating array of sand exhibits and pick up memorabilia made with sand, wood, and glass from Milos Sand Gallery. At Totem, freshen up your wardrobe with a breezy cotton dress or colorful sun hat. Meanwhile, Pliatsiko’s one-of-a-kind items such as cross-stitch embroidered earrings and macramé necklaces are hard to resist.

Fashion boutique Vanilla carries resort wear by Greek designers, including bold print dresses and flowing caftans. Foodies should make room in their suitcase for delectable local goodies like sundried tomato paste, available at Ark of Tastes. Tip: Don’t leave without sampling the watermelon pie.

This wildly popular taverna, which sources raw ingredients from the family farm and local producers, doesn't accept bookings, but it’s worth waiting in line. Choose standout dishes from a whimsical handwritten menu, including slow-cooked wild goat with lemon, mustard, and marjoram and braised chickpeas with curry, cumin, and red peppers.

Situated in the traditional village of Trypiti, Barriello has cemented its reputation as Milos’ most innovative dining venue. Chef-owner Takis Loukakis sources ingredients from his organic farm, serving dishes such as lamb picanha with black garlic, eggplant, and miso as well as vegan fare like king oyster mushroom carpaccio.

A spectacular setting for lunch or a sunset dinner, Klima’s sole restaurant is known for serving some of the best seafood on the island. Kritharoto (orzo) with shrimp and lobster spaghetti are among the highlights at Astakas, but if it’s grilled fish you’re after, take your pick from the day’s catch.

Situated on the water in the fishing settlement of Mandrakia, old-school taverna Medusa is a choice lunch and sunset dinner spot, so it’s always busy. Watch fishermen untangle nets and potter about their wooden caiques as you dine. Don’t miss the grilled eel with fava, fried calamari, and pitarakia (a local cheese pie).

Alevromilos

Chef Vassilis Papikinos showcases Milos’ wealth of produce through Cycladic cuisine that marries comfort and creativity. At his restaurant Alevromilos in Parasporos, he also blends in Italian influences, crafting dishes like skordolazana (handmade tagliatelle with a garlic sauce). For dessert, fresh local figs are served with xynomizithra cheese and honey.

Agnos suggests visiting Milos between mid-May and early October. “Seasonality is less of a factor than it used to be,” she said. “More clients are traveling in the shoulder season.” July and August are peak tourist months, so expect the island to be bustling with fellow visitors and cruise passengers. Summer is also the hottest time of year, though cooling northerly winds can take the edge off. While the Aegean waters are still rather cool for swimming in May, you may well have beaches almost completely to yourself. June is one of the best months to visit, with long, languid days and comfortable temperatures. Meanwhile, September is proving increasingly attractive for many travelers, followed by October, when the island winds down and prepares to close shop for the season.

The quickest way to reach Milos is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Milos operate daily and take about 45 minutes. Alternatively, take the ferry from Piraeus. A fast catamaran takes around three hours and 25 minutes to reach the island. Milos also features on cruise line itineraries, including those of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , Ponant , SeaDream Yacht Club , and Celestyal Cruises .

Head up to Milos’ hilltop capital Plaka, where the maze-like alleyways and whitewashed homes are characteristically Cycladic. The ideal time to visit is just before sunset, which is best viewed from the courtyard of Panagia Korfiatissa church. Arrive early to nab a good spot. Agnos suggests “visiting the town’s little shops, jewelry boutiques, and galleries.”

Spend a day roaming around Pollonia village. Take shade beneath tamarisk trees on the sandy beach and watch fishing caiques rhythmically bob on the water. Pay a visit to the Kostantakis Winery and sample cave-aged wines. When dinnertime rolls around, take your pick from the plentiful dining options lining the town jetty.

Jump in your rental and take the ferry from Pollonia to neighboring Kimolos island. Make your way to the Goupa-Kara settlement and walk among picture-perfect boathouses. Cool off in the cyan waters of Prassa Beach, then head up to the main town of Horio to stroll along cobblestoned paths, pausing for meze at a taverna.

Rental Car: Book a rental car well in advance, particularly if you're visiting during peak season. “I recommend a car rental on Milos. For people comfortable with driving, it’s the best way to get around. Otherwise, have a driver on call,” said Agnos. Tip: Stick to paved and gravel roads, which can be narrow, and rely more on road signs than Google Maps.

Taxi: Silver taxis are available at the airport and there is a cab rank near the port in Adamas. They may cost more if booked via a hotel. Prices vary, ranging from around 15 euros from Adamas to Plaka and about 30 euros from the airport to Pollonia.

Bus: Milos has a small yet relatively comfortable bus fleet . Routes connect the airport with Adamas. From Adamas, you can reach Pollonia, Plaka, Sarakiniko, and Papafragas, among other destinations. Tickets cost two euros.
