What the VCTs Global Title Would Mean for China

The VCT 2023 Grand Finals are approaching, and Chinese teams are scaling international heights, which is important for the gaming community.

Valorant officially launched in China this past July, making the Chinese qualifying teams for the Valorant Champions Tour all the more impressive. As the VCT 2023 continues, the Chinese teams push the limits to stand against the world's greatest Valorant players.

Although involved in the Esports scene for two years, Valorant held its first official event for China in July 2023. Chinese government-related obstacles have restricted the country's representation in Valorant 's international scene. As the championship approaches its final stages, the Chinese teams are eager to demonstrate their skills. With Valorant prohibited from China's servers for two years, it was up to Chinese players to make a name for themselves. Up until recently, these Chinese teams made their way to the international plate without governmental support, and fans back home are closely watching. Even if China doesn't earn the championship title, these professional Valorant players have defied their odds and made their mark on the world stage.

What Are the VCTs?

Hosted by Riot Games, the Valorant Champions Tour had its first event in 2021. The annual Esports tournament is an international competition to crown the best team in professional Valorant . While Valorant 's appeal increases, this year's tournament stakes are at its highest in history, with a total prize pool of $2.25 million. Apart from being regarded as the most skilled team, the winners of the VCT 2023 will be rewarded $1 million. For comparison, Brazilian team LOUD walked away with $300,000 as first-place winners in VCT Champions 2022.

The remaining teams have undergone difficult matches to reach the current standings in the tournament. From Aug. 6th to 26th, 16 teams will face off in Los Angeles for the final tournament stages. Of these 16 teams, there are five from the EMEA (Europe), four from the Americas, four from the Pacific (Asia) and three from China. Nine of these teams qualified through their respective international league. In addition, four more teams earned their spot through Last Chance Qualifiers in July. The last three qualifying teams come from the Champions China Qualifier, China's first official Valorant LAN event. Unlike teams from other regions, China received its own qualifier event because of the recent approval from its government allowing Valorant to broadcast on its territory. Anticipating the day they would formally qualify and fight for the trophy, the three Chinese teams, EDward Gaming, Bilibili Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix, were ready for the challenge.

China’s Strict Gaming Regulations

On July 12th, Valorant was published in China under a name that roughly translates to Fearless Covenant. Despite China having one of the largest gaming markets in the world, its government heavily restricts gaming content. Popularity isn't enough to approve a game's release within China's borders. Titles such as Fortnite and Overwatch are unavailable for players in China . Games must undergo a strict approval process to regulate gaming addiction in youth and monitor disapproving content such as violence. China's National Press and Publication Administration, NPPA, oversees licensing for foreign game distribution, including Valorant .

NPPA's approval for Valorant in Dec. 2022 will help stimulate China's gaming market and even local economies during Esports events. Valorant is available for Chinese players through Tencent, a Chinese video game developer and publisher. Owner of Riot Games, Tencent is the top gaming company regarding revenue, beating companies like Sony and Nintendo. As a highly talked-about game in China, Tencent expects Valorant to be incredibly successful in its gaming industry and considers it its " most important game published this year ." Considering the complexity surrounding NPPA's supervision of game licensing, Valorant 's approval is a valuable feat for Chinese fans.

China Officially Joins the Valorant Scene

Before Valorant officially reached China, players had to find alternative means to play. Chinese players had to use VPNs to gain access to the game and servers outside the country. China's absence of the official game also came with a lack of events and streaming for fans. Lacking a private league, Chinese teams participated in events hosted by third parties. Fans in China had limited access to external international Valorant broadcasts and streams , and China's scene mostly remained within its borders. Without governmental approval, Chinese Valorant existed at the hands of passionate players. Despite facing isolation from the international scene, two teams represented China at an official VCT event for the first time in 2022. EDward Gaming demonstrated their resolve at the East Asia Last Chance Qualifiers and secured their spot in VCT Champions 2022. Although EDG didn't advance further, they were China's first Valorant team to make a global debut.

After receiving a taste of the international spotlight in VCT Champions 2022, China's teams didn't intend to stop there. Though Valorant 's distribution in China came after organizing the VCT 2023 tournament structure, Riot Games ensured China's participation. As a result, Champions China Qualifiers was the first Valorant event to recognize China as its own region and invited the top three teams to qualify for Champions Los Angeles. FunPlus Phoenix faced elimination after losing two matches in the VCT 2023 Group Stage, leaving EDward Gaming and Bilibili Gaming as China's two standing teams. As the Group Stage concluded on Aug. 13th, EDG and BLG made it where no other Chinese Valorant team has ever been, the Champions Playoffs. Beginning on Aug. 16th, fans worldwide will watch the final eight teams compete for survival in a double-elimination bracket.

Valorant China Making International Waves

Chinese teams EDG and BLG will have to navigate unfamiliar terrain as they rival experienced teams dominating the international Valorant scene. Highly regarded teams, like Brazil's LOUD and United Kingdom's Fnatic, are familiar with the pressures to perform well under international scrutiny. In comparison, some believe China's teams are the outsiders that somehow managed to triumph over teams predicted to win. Fans witnessed these instances this year when EDG defeated LOUD 2-0 at Masters Tokyo, and BLG won 2-0 against NRG during Champions Group Stages. While some regard these performances as the opposing teams having an off day or sheer luck in favor of China, it becomes harder to discredit their successes as the region continues to prevail. Chinese teams manage to compete at and above the same level as some of the world's best Valorant teams despite the gaming disadvantages China faces in their region .

When prospective professional Valorant players got access to the game with its 2020 release, China wasn't even at the starting line. Deprived of a server, Chinese players relied on nearby countries like South Korea and Japan. While regions got to work recruiting their golden rosters and organizing training boot camps, Chinese players were on VPNs searching for feasible ping. Unable to compete in international tournaments, all Chinese players could do was wait on the sidelines. As Valorant teams in China banded together, they depended on other Asian teams to return and took every opportunity to scrimmage together. Teams like EDG used these scrimmages as a secondary way to experience differing playstyles and assess their skills. While these Asian teams likely regarded the scrimmages as just another practice regime, this was the closest China's Valorant players could get to the international stage. Through ad hoc invitations from Riot Games, Chinese teams had some opportunities to join the Valorant Esports scene. However, this didn't change how Chinese teams were underestimated and sometimes disregarded by community members.

What once was considered an unattainable dream for Chinese teams is now painstakingly close to reality for EDG and BLG. Just over a month has passed since Valorant arrived in China, yet Chinese teams broke international ground in 2022. Previously, China was a region with no official ties to the Valorant community, but a July announcement revealed it will host Masters Shanghai in Spring 2024. As VCT Champions 2023 approaches its end, the Valorant community must reward credit where it's due. China, a country once forbidding its play, might have possessed a roster crowned as the top Valorant team in the world. Whether EDG or BLG advances past the playoffs or not, arriving at the stage they are now under the limitations they faced is irrefutably a product of their dedication.

VCT 2024 lands in Shanghai, China.

Riot is celebrating China’s one-year anniversary in VALORANT with a VCT Masters of its own

Image of Cecilia Ciocchetti

Riot Games confirmed today that the second event for the VALORANT Champions Tour 2024 is coming to Shanghai, China.

In China, Riot’s FPS has been accessible to the public since July 2023, but the “promising” community prompted the publisher to set one of VCT’s major competitions in the country next year.

The global head of VALORANT Esports Leo Faria said on July 28 that VCT Masters 2024 will be held in Shanghai one year from now to celebrate the first anniversary of VALORANT’s launch in the country.

While VALORANT launched globally over three years ago, licensing regulations in China had slowed down its release in the country. But after a lengthy approval process, the game was cleared, theoretically leading to an increase in the playerbase of hundreds of thousands of people. VALORANT was already popular in China, a country and region that has already fielded two teams at past international tournaments for this year’s VCT.

The insurgence of over 10 teams in the local tournament and the region’s presence at the international event showed Riot how “amazing and promising” the VALORANT community in China is. “To show our appreciation and to celebrate the one year anniversary of VALORANT in China,” Faria said. “Next year we’re very excited to bring masters to Shanghai.”

Marking the 2024 year as “special” for the VCT, Faria underlined once again how global the VALORANT community is, with its game now also being available in one of the most populated countries of the world.

The announcement of the location of Masters 2024 is sure to thrill many VALORANT fans around the world, and those who might have lost hope to attend due to the long journey can still cross their fingers the 2024 LOCK//IN will be hosted near them.

2023 marked VALORANT ’s introduction to China and its enthusiastic reception from Chinese players. Within the first week of its release, VALORANT became the second most-viewed game on Chinese streaming platforms and drew a massive player base. VALORANT’s Chinese interface differs from its international counterparts, but the fundamentals of the game remain the same – and as players progress through the ranks, new talent emerges.

It’s only natural that a Chinese esports scene would develop after VALORANT’s Chinese launch. Let’s explore the structure and key players of VALORANT’s growing Chinese esports league.

As China is an extremely vast country spanning five time zones and bordering 14 countries, and also has a separate game interface, further national tournaments are developing within the state. A VALORANT Champions Tour: China tournament is in the works.

To progress through China’s new VALORANT esports ladder, teams must first participate in three stages of competition within the VALORANT China Evolution Series. The first portion of the series is known as Act 1: Variation. The top teams of Act 1: Variation qualify for Act 2: Selection and the winners of the Selection stage go on to compete in Act 3: Heritability for all the marbles.

Next, the winners of the VALORANT China Evolution Series Act 3: Heritability will qualify for a coveted place in VALORANT China Ascension – VALORANT China Ascension 2023 is set to take place from December 20th to December 30th.

VCT China unveiled as VALORANT’s fourth International League

The time has come. .

CHINA – Riot Games revealed today the integration of China as the latest addition to the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT), positioning it as the fourth International League. This announcement places China shoulder to shoulder with the Pacific, EMEA, and Americas leagues at the premier level of competition. Specifics about the Chinese League, including its hub city, remain under wraps for now.

“I am extremely excited to share that China will join the Americas, EMEA and Pacific as the fourth official league in the VCT,” said Leo Faria , Global Head of VALORANT Esports. “The Chinese community has shown their potential. Teams have continuously made their mark on global events, and with the launch of VALORANT in China, we want to officially welcome the community into our global sport.”

In line with the approach used for the establishment of the previous three international leagues, Riot Games is in the midst of a thorough and detailed selection process to determine the ten partner teams for the Chinese league.

VALORANT China

“We hope these long-term partners can share our vision, focus on long-term and sustainable development, and contribute to the entire VALORANT esports ecosystem. To achieve this goal, we will not charge any seat fees but will provide relatively generous subsidies and a comprehensive incentive plan for the selected long-term partners, rewarding their contributions to the development of the VALORANT esports ecosystem. The partner teams for the VCT CN region are expected to be announced later this year.”

The prior selection process for teams from EMEA, Pacific, and Americas was extensive, taking several months and involving written applications, in-depth interviews, and financial evaluations.

Furthermore, they will implement a similar two-year promotion for the league. In its inaugural year, it’s anticipated that an additional team will join, bringing the tally to eleven, mirroring the structure in other leagues. The promotional tournament is set for December this year. Qualification for this tournament will be based on points accumulated in the Fearless Covenant CN Evolution Series Open Tournament (VALORANT CN Evolution Series), running from September through November.

The debut season of VALORANT International Leagues concluded in June, with Paper Rex (Pacific), Team Liquid (EMEA), and LOUD (Americas) emerging as champions.

Details about the teams representing VCT China remain under wraps at the moment. However, following the game’s approval in the nation, a number of major organizations have made early moves into the scene this year.

Recognizable names from the LPL such as EDward Gaming, Bilibili Gaming, Weibo Gaming, JD Gaming, LNG Esports, Rare Atom, and Royal Never Give Up, have made their presence known in domestic competition. On the other hand, after winning a Masters event this year, FunPlus Phoenix chose to shift from the EMEA region to their home base in China. The renowned Swedish organization Ninjas in Pyjamas is also reportedly on its way to securing a team for the region, mirroring FunPlus Phoenix’s departure from EMEA.

In anticipation of the monumental inaugural year of VALORANT in China, Riot Games took the initiative to elevate the broadcast quality by launching a caster training program. The objective was to bolster the audience experience by bringing onboard elite-level commentators. Out of a staggering 500+ applicants, a mere 20 made the cut after a stringent three-stage selection process. From this group, 12 were handpicked as the official voices for VALORANT’s Chinese airings. Even if some of these commentators had notable reputations in other esports titles, they all went through the same selection process.

10 Partnered Teams:

  • There are ten partnered teams, in line with the other three ILs.
  • To be announced later this year

Ascension CN:

  • Ascension CN event to take place in December
  • It’s expected that one team will earn a two-year promotion, consistent with the other three ILs.
  • Teams can qualify through the points earned in the VALORANT CN Evolution Series tournaments from September to November.

Challengers League:

  • The announced Challenger Leagues currently don’t cover the CN region.

Riot Games ‘Hopes’ to Welcome China to the Valorant Champions Tour in 2024

More importantly in the short term, riot has announced that the official launch date of valorant in china will be july 12..

On Wednesday, Riot Games hosted a press conference in Shanghai, with President of Esports John Needham, COO Whalen Rozelle, and President of Mobile Growth Leo Lin in attendance to jointly announce that the official launch date of Valorant in China is July 12. The announcement is a milestone moment for Valorant and Riot Games’ esports operations in China following the game receiving approval from China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) in December.

It should be noted that Riot Games parent company Tencent Holdings will host the Tencent Esports Annual Esports Global Summit in Shenzhen, China on July 14. It is likely that Valorant will become a high-profile discussion point during the summit.

Riot COO Rozelle also shared more details about Valorant during his presentation: “First, this is not official, but 2024 is when we ‘hope’ to welcome China to the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) in 2024,” he said, “We’re currently figuring out how to scale up China sports, and we are tremendously optimistic about Valorant Esports’ future in China.”

Currently, Chinese Valorant esports teams can play the Valorant Champions Qualifiers from July 3 – 14. Twelve Chinese teams, including TE, 4AM, Royal Never Give-Up (RNG), Tyloo, NTER, Weibo Gaming (WBG), DRG, Bilibili Gaming (BLG), ME, ASE, Edward Gaming (EDG), and FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) will compete for three spots at Valorant Champions 2023 in Los Angeles from August 6 – 26. Laptop brand HP OMEN, Intel, hardware brand ZOWE, and gaming chair gaming will become the official partners of the event. In addition, the event will be open to an on-site, live audiences.

The VCT is Valorant’s top global esports series. The VCT Masters Tokyo concluded on June 25, and Chinese esports organization EDG won the top six of the event, becoming the first Chinese esports team to defeat the 2022 Valorant World Champion LOUD. “We saw a surge in viewership that set new records for our sport with fans here in China,” Rozelle said.

Bobby Jin, Valorant China publishing producer, also stated during the conference that  Valorant would put ¥2 million ($275K USD) into developing the Valorant grassroots competitions, including collegiate, live streaming platforms, and internet cafe channels across China.

Valorant Champions Tour 2024: Shanghai Masters Unveiled

Riot Games is already setting the stage for the 2024 competitive Valorant circuit, with Shanghai announced as the venue for its second international tournament next year – the VCT 2024 Masters Shanghai. The announcement was made on 28th July by Leo Faria, the Global Head of Valorant Esports, providing the update well in advance and stating that this tournament would also mark the one-year celebration of Valorant’s release in China.

Valorant Finally Released in China

The official release of Valorant in China took place earlier this month on 12th July. It came more than three years after it was launched for the rest of the world. The Chinese players received all the skin collections along with a set number of agents and maps. The launch in China was also celebrated with a special melee weapon skin drop called Ignite Capsule. It consists of a specially designed fan-melee which is probably the most exquisite and well-designed knife in Valorant.

Now, the developers have already planned out more than a year in advance how they will be celebrating the one year anniversary of the game’s launch in China. Riot Games will continue maintaining its presence in Asia by conducting another international tournament in the region next year. It has been announced that VCT 2024 Masters Shanghai will take place in the upcoming competitive circuit. It will be the second international tournament of the year. This announcement comes just a week after the groups for VCT 2023 were announced.

“From day one we aspire to build a sport that’s truly global, with teams, players, and fans from all over the world. With Chinese teams starting to participate in our global events including an amazing run from EDG at Masters Tokyo. We have seen how amazing and promising the community is in China,” says Leo Faria. The upcoming international tournament is scheduled to take place in late spring 2024.

EDG from China has already shown the potential that teams from the region possess following its historic record-breaking run at the VCT 2023 Masters Tokyo. It will be interesting to see how they perform in the upcoming Valorant Champions Los Angeles 2023. The Masters event for 2024 will also celebrate the one-year anniversary of Valorant’s release in the respective country.

This rides on AG fixing their individual decisions during site holds and post-plants. Overall their executes and defaults are solid and they have good ideas, but when it matters they tend to make stupid decisions and give their opponents a way back into the round (not holding crosses, mistiming peaks, etc). BLG 2-1 if AG improves those problems, 2-0 if they don't.
