Fisherman’s Friends The Musical this week is gracing the boards at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal. The theatre is located in the centre of the city close to transport and restaurants.
Based on a true story of Cornish fishermen who come together as a chorus to sing the traditional working songs they had sung for generations, this feel-good musical brings the salty sea air and sunshine to a cold and gloomy Nottingham evening.
As the curtain rises, we hear the toe-tapping folk songs sung by the sailors out at sea casting their nets. The star-studded cast consists of many theatre, TV, and film household names. James Gaddas leads the cast as Jim. We learn his wife, also a talented singer left him for the bright lights of London. His daughter, Alwyn played by Parisa Shahmir has a hauntingly beautiful voice which she is very modest of, and she sings under duress for their friends as they gather in the pub in the evening. Jago is her 72 year old Grandfather, played by Robert Duncan and Susan Penhaligion plays her funfilled Grandmother, Maggie. The band of lobster catchers are lifelong friends, joining Jim and Jago are Rowan played by Dan Buckley, Archie played by Hadrian Delacey, Wiggy played by Pete Gallagher and Ben played by Datoka Starr,
New boy in town is Danny, played tonight brilliantly by understudy Dominic Brewer, is a Londoner visiting the village for a wedding. He finds himself out of his depth amongst the townsfolk as his car is swept away to sea and he loses the key to his B&B. However, as his career has been in the music business he is blown away by the talent he hears in the band of fisherman and makes it his ambition to find them fame.
The set design, by award-winning Lucy Osbourne, very cleverly transforms from a fishing boat at sea to a pub to a London nightclub and much more seamlessly.
The talented musicians are on stage throughout the performance, led by Musical Director James William-Pattison on double bass, mandolin and tenor banjo includes Hannah Cummings on violin, Alfie Gldley on guitar (plus more), Beccy Hurst on whistle and concertina and John OMahony on harmonica and assorted other instruments.
Fisherman’s Friends churn out around 17 plus songs across the production and became the first traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album and play on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury. From the book by Amanda Whittington and the screenplay by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard, Piers Ashworth we get a glimpse into the simple life they lead with community and family at the heart of everything they do.
By the end of the show, everyone in the theatre was on their feet dancing. Treat yourself to a night at the theatre for a guaranteed good time!

Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical – Theatre Royal, Nottingham
Reviewer: james garrington.
Writer: Amanda Whittington
Director: James Grieve
Move forward a few years and in comes Danny, a former record company man who hears the group singing. They are his route to money and rehabilitation, by getting them a record deal. The only problem is that he doesn’t work for the record company any more, and when his ex-boss hears the group she is not impressed. As the men lose heart and decide to go back to their fishing, is this the end of their story?
The sense of place is established early on, the flexible set by Lucy Osborne depicting a dockside setting which easily transforms into the inside of a pub, beautifully enhanced and transformed by Johanna Town’s atmospheric lighting into a small boat rocking on the sea. James Grieve’s direction and Amanda Whittington’s book combine to give the production an authentic, down-to-earth feeling as though we truly are transported to Cornwall.
The main focus is around one family – grandparents Jago and Maggie father Jim, and daughter Alwyn, and how Danny’s visit affects them, but this is essentially an ensemble piece and the music is lifted to a new level when we have the company and on-stage band adding to the usually a cappella vocals of the shanties. Those shanties are striking too, of course: after all, this is a show about how they took this previously unknown group to stardom, with the seven voices of the Fisherman’s Friends coming together wonderfully in a series of well-known and less well-known songs.
As Jim, James Gaddas demonstrates a nice contrast of humour and grief for his wife, with a protective air towards his daughter whom he is determined not to lose. Gaddas also has a couple of numbers away from the rest of the group and shows us some pleasing vocal skills. Susan Penhaligon’s Maggie is practical with a humorous glint in her eye, especially when it comes to her grand-daughter, and Robert Duncan’s Jago is well-depicted as a man who knows he’s getting too old to go to sea but can’t quite let it go. Also in fine voice is Parisa Shahmir as Alwyn, her haunting ballads contrasting well with the gritty sounds of the shanties. It’s a shame we don’t get to hear more of her. Dominic Brewer (Danny, on at this performance for the indisposed Jason Langley) also gives us some excellent though underused vocals and makes the best of a role that is written very stereotypically, both in his behaviour and in the reactions of the locals to his arrival.
It’s a show about community and friendship, and how music can bring people together – and in the end, this feelgood show will have you on your feet and clapping along with the rest of the audience.
Runs Until 4 February 2023 and on tour

THE WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS: THE MUSICAL
Book By Amanda Whittington Based on the Screenplay by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard, Piers Ashworth Directed by James Grieve
Based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their hit 2019 movie, Fisherman's Friends: The Musical is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music which smashed box office records in Cornwall.
When a group of Cornish fishermen came together to sing the traditional working songs they'd sung for generations, nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected the story to end on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. They are spotted by a fish-out-of-water music manager on a trip from London, who must learn that there is more to life than selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame.
So climb aboard, find your sea legs and allow yourself to fall for this critically acclaimed musical – hook, line and sinker!

Rousing. Uniting. Cornish sea shanties ahoy!
Fisherman’s Friend have nine albums to their name, two feature films, a stage musical, a book, a TV documentary, they’ve played for royalty and to tens of thousands of fans in sell-out tours year in year out…
A decade ago, The Fisherman’s Friends signed a million-pound record deal that saw their album Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends go Gold as they became the first ever traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album.
And thanks to the small film with a big heart that shares their name, the story of the original Cornish ‘buoy band’ is known around the world – bound by shared experience, for more than 30 years they have gathered on the Platt on the harbour in their native Port Isaac to sing the songs of the sea, songs that in some cases have been handed down for hundreds of years, songs that connect them to generations of Cornish fishermen that have come before them.
The Fisherman’s Friends are lobster fisherman Jeremy Brown , writer and shopkeeper Jon Cleave , smallholder and engineer John ‘Lefty’ Lethbridge , builder John McDonnell , lobster fisherman Jason Nicholas , filmmaker Toby Lobb and potter Bill Hawkins.

Explore Russian Summer Life: Visit Russian Dacha!
People from Northern countries soak up every bit of pleasure out of summertime. Its days are numbered, and we do our best to store up the sunshine for the long, cold months that make up the rest of the year. Russians are among those who take full advantage of the brief, hot weather.
At summer’s peak, many Russians don’t venture far. The reason is dachas , our country houses. August brings the harvest for our small garden plots, but a dacha is much more than just an economic benefit: it embodies a culture dating back to Communist times.
The dachas is a unique phenomenon in the life of anyone who lives in the boundless expanses of the Russian Federation. A small plot – just 0.15 acres – with a few currant bushes, apple trees and a vegetable patch, a little wooden house with no telephone or running water and a discreetly located outhouse. I’d love to how you mine.
How we’ll get there:
I believe that it’ll be fun to experience the Russian suburban train (electrichka), which is very popular in our country. Electrichka is inexpensive and it might even be faster than a car as it doesn’t depend on the traffic. Travelling by commuter train you’ll be able to see ordinary people and possibly talk with them. Sometimes trains offer you such “free entertainment” as listening to numerous vendors and musicians. But local trains might be crowded at certain times of the day so in some cases we’d recommend you to go with us by car.
What we’ll do:
We start the trip with the tour of Dmitrov , an ancient Russian town, founded in 1147 and called Moscow younger brother. It is located 1 hour drive out of Moscow.
Learning how to prepare a Russianlunch:
First you choose the right meat, then the right recipe for the marinade. The fire has to be started and allowed to burn down until it’s almost out, but still smouldering. If you catch it at that moment, then the meat will roast evenly and not burn.
Meanwhile, the fire keeps threatening to go out, compelling family and guests to furiously fan it with pieces of cardboard. We serve sashlik with baked potatoes, pickled vegetables and of course Russian vodka. Lunch is followed by traditional Russian tea drinking .
You’ll be so involved, you won’t even notice when it’s time to go back to the city.
The tour cost is 200 USD.
Tour price is for 2 people but I can accommodate up to 6 people in this tour, however the price will change.
Transportationis extra.

Fisherman's Friends is full of soul and the voices are exceptional. The sense of community that runs through the piece feels uniquely Cornish.
