There are some amazing towns and places to visit in East Tennessee! That should come as no surprise, in a region brimming with natural beauty and rich history .

From major cities to small towns , impressive state parks , to interesting historic sites, theme parks, and iconic landmarks — there’s so many things to do in East Tennessee!

We haven’t even mentioned Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the most visited state park in the country!

This part of the Volunteer State offers a diverse array of attractions for every type of traveler. Whether you’re a history buff, outdoor enthusiast, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, you’ll find at least a few places to visit in East Tennessee.

In this guide, we’ll explore 21 awesome destinations in this picturesque region , ranging from well-known areas to hidden gems.

Places You Need to Visit in East Tennessee

1. great smoky mountains national park.

Let’s start with the iconic Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina border, this park is a paradise for hikers , with over 850 miles of trails. That includes a 70-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail, too!

It’s also one of the best places to visit in East Tennessee for wildlife sightings and chasing waterfalls .

First-timers should drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, and visit Cades Cove and Clingmans Dome (the highest point in Tennessee).

2. Gatlinburg

Nestled at the doorstep of the national park, Gatlinburg is a bustling mountain town with endless things to do .

It’s one of the best places to visit in East Tennessee for families , with an abundance of large cabins , as well as delicious restaurants and fun attractions.

There are dinner theaters, amusement parks, water parks, and mountain coasters galore. Highlights include Anakeesta, Gatlinburg SkyPark, and Ober Gatlinburg.

The town is also known for its vibrant arts and crafts community and offers quick access to several easier hiking trails . For adults, Gatlinburg has great nightlife, with breweries and rooftop bars.

3. Johnson City

You may have heard of it from the popular song “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show where everyone belts out at the top of their lungs “Johnson City, Tennessee!” If not, go give it a listen!

Johnson City is full of fun things to do , especially for those looking for outdoor adventures!

From plenty of spots to go hiking to visiting nearby waterfalls , boating on Boone Lake to mountain biking, playing disc golf, and much more!

Not only are there plenty of outdoor activities, but this city is teeming with delicious restaurants — one of our favorites in particular is Juniper (check it out!). There are also a handful of great breweries as well as some cozy coffee (& tea!) shops !

It’s also one of the three cities that make up the Tri-Cities of Tennessee , as well as the city of Kingsport and Bristol (another one of our favorite places to visit in East Tennessee).

4. Townsend

A stark contrast to Gatlinburg’s hustle and bustle, Townsend is known as the “peaceful side of the Smokies.”

This laid-back small town is known for its welcoming atmosphere, quiet park entrance, and proximity to Cades Cove.

In addition to Cades Cove, check out the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center . This small but very impressive museum offers hands-on activities like basket weaving, and also hosts a popular free summer concert series.

If you visit Townsend in the summer, you absolutely should go tubing or rafting! The Little River runs right through town, offering endless opportunities to get in and on the water.

And don’t miss the Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival every August.

Still need convincing that this is one of the best places to visit in East Tennessee? Townsend is one of only two Tennessee cities named among the 50 best travel destinations in 2024 . The other city that made the list — Memphis.

On the opposite side of Gatlinburg, you’ll find Cosby, another tranquil small town. Believe it or not, despite its slow pace, Cosby’s roots are closely tied to the clandestine world of moonshine .

While most of the local shine traditions have transformed over the years, you can still immerse yourself in local stories and visit historically significant spots. Stop by Adventure Distilling Co ., where you can sample moonshine that’s been made the same way for over a century.

Beyond its moonshine roots, Cosby has an entrance to the national park, along with one of the park’s best campgrounds (also called Cosby).

Also, stop into Carver’s Applehouse Restaurant and Farm Market for fresh fried apple pies!

6. Dollywood

We can’t talk about the best places to visit in East Tennessee without mentioning Dollywood .

Owned by country music legend Dolly Parton, who’s a Sevier County native, Dollywood is a theme park in Pigeon Forge with a distinctive Southern charm.

It has plenty of thrilling rides , of course, but the park is also known for its incredible food and amazing, over-the-top seasonal festivals . There are even resort-style onsite lodges, plus a water park in the summer.

7. Knoxville

The largest city in East Tennessee, Knoxville has a ton to see and do (and eat and drink!).

To begin with, Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee. If you happen to be in town during football season, try to catch a Vols home game. Neyland Stadium is one of the biggest college football stadiums in the country , seating over 101,000!

The city also has a lively arts scene, interesting historic sites, vibrant nightlife, and endless outdoor activities .

Even if you have just a short time, visiting the Sunsphere in World’s Fair Park is a must . The one-of-a-kind glittering structure is a local icon! It’s also a short walk from Market Square, a fun entertainment district with tons of great restaurants , boutiques, bars , and coffee shops .

8. Douglas Lake

Just outside Sevierville , sparkling Douglas Lake is a haven for all things related to water recreation.

With over 30,000 acres of water surface and more than 550 miles of shoreline, it’s perfect for boating , fishing, swimming, paddling, tubing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, and more.

You can do it all here, but fishing is one of the stars at Douglas Lake. It’s actually rated as one of the best bodies of water for crappie and largemouth bass fishing in the entire country !

When you want a break from the water, Douglas Lake also has several sandy beaches and picnic areas.

9. Jonesborough

As the oldest town in Tennessee , established in 1779, Jonesborough exudes historic charm. Simply walking down Main Street and admiring the well-preserved architecture is like taking a step back in time.

In addition to being the state’s oldest town, Jonesborough is also known as the “storytelling capital of the world.” For those who may not know, storytelling is a traditional and very special art form in Appalachia.

With that said, a visit to the International Storytelling Center is a must. And, if you can time your visit right, so is the Storytelling Festival every October.

Jonesborough is only 15 minutes from Johnson City — visit both while you’re in town!

10. Cherokee National Forest

A vast wilderness (and even more vast possibilities) awaits in the Cherokee National Forest.

This tremendous tract of postcard-worthy public land spans most of the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, starting near Chattanooga and going up to Bristol.

Every imaginable outdoor activity is available in all four seasons. To name a few, you can hike, camp, take scenic drives, or enjoy several lakes.

Some highlights include driving the scenic Cherohala Skyway or visiting the Ocoee Rafting Center, where you can experience world-class whitewater rapids.

11. Frozen Head State Park

Well off the beaten path north of Knoxville, Frozen Head State Park is a hidden gem among the best places to visit in East Tennessee.

The park offers excellent year-round hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, camping, and fishing.

One of our favorite trails is Emory Gap Falls, which shows off more than one waterfall. This is an especially great hike in the winter , with wide-open views.

Another popular route summits Frozen Head itself, passing an old fire tower lookout along the way.

12. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area

For a (MUCH) less crowded alternative to the Great Smoky Mountains, head north to Big South Fork. WAY north — this area straddles the Tennessee-Kentucky border .

This lesser-known gem has surprisingly rugged gorges and amazing natural rock formations, including the impressive Twin Arches.

There are also several other arches, plus waterfalls galore, like Yahoo Falls —— the tallest in Kentucky.

13. Tellico Plains

Nestled in the foothills of the Smokies toward Chattanooga, Tellico Plains is another great place to visit in Southeast Tennessee.

The small town is considered the gateway to both the Cherohala Skyway and the southern portion of the Cherokee National Forest. So, unsurprisingly, outdoor recreation abounds.

Watts Bar Dam and Reservoir is a popular fishing destination, especially for walleye, crappie, and a variety of bass. Finally, don’t miss a stroll through historic downtown, which is just a few blocks from the skyway.

14. The Lost Sea

Less than 30 minutes from Tellico Plains, you can go on a unique underground adventure at The Lost Sea .

Tennessee has plenty of caves, but none quite like this. The Lost Sea is actually an underground lake — the largest one in America , in fact.

Take a guided tour through the caverns, first walking and then at the bottom, boating across the The Lost Sea itself!

15. Chattanooga

For so, SOOO many reasons, Chattanooga is one of the best places to visit in Southeast Tennessee.

This vibrant city is nestled along the Tennessee River, offering a mix of urban attractions and natural beauty. It’s outdoorsy, romantic , super pet-friendly , and charming all around.

For a first visit, we recommend hitting the Tennessee Aquarium (one of the best in the country!) , strolling across the Walnut Street Bridge, visiting Lookout Mountain for stunning views, along with many other things to do in the Scenic City !

16. Bristol

Best known as the “Birthplace of Country Music,” Bristol straddles the Tennessee-Virginia border. Exploring the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is a no-brainer, but that’s only the beginning.

Bristol is also famous for being home to a NASCAR racetrack, Bristol Motor Speedway.

More recently in 2022, the town also got the Bristol Casino , the future Hard Rock Hotel (coming in 2024). It sits just barely on the Virginia side of the border and interestingly, it’s the state’s first EVER casino !

Bristol is only 25 minutes from Johnson City — consider visiting both cities!

17. Roan Mountain State Park

For a tranquil escape about half-hour from Johnson City, head to Roan Mountain State Park.

This hidden gem offers tons of hiking trails , the beautiful Doe River, and excellent camping. Choose from over 100 campsites or 30 fully-equipped cabins.

Wildflowers and fishing are both summer highlights at Roan Mountain, but don’t overlook winter, when many people tackle the trails on cross-country skis.

18. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

Step into history at the famed Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, where you can follow the footsteps of pioneers. Yes, it’s the very same Cumberland Gap in countless country, bluegrass, and folk songs.

This historically significant area was where countless people crossed the Appalachians headed West.

Explore the well-preserved Hensley Settlement for a glimpse into the past. This community never had a road or electricity, yet the last person to leave didn’t go until the 1950s!

You can also book a guided tour of Gap Cave, between April and September.

19. South Cumberland State Park

Not to be confused with Cumberland Gap, South Cumberland State Park is just outside of Chattanooga. It’s part of the Cumberland Plateau, known for stunning waterfalls and unique rock formations .

Most people come to South Cumberland for hiking and backcountry camping, but the park also offers excellent rock climbing.

The Fiery Gizzard Trail is a highlight, a challenging hike that rewards with breathtaking scenery. Buggytop Cave is another, open only in the summer months and requiring a hiking permit.

20. Red Clay State Historic Park

Immerse yourself in a somber but fascinating piece of Native American history at Red Clay State Historic Park.

This site, one of the most unique places to visit in East Tennessee, marks the start of the Trail of Tears . It was the last official seat of Cherokee government before 1830’s  Indian Removal Act, when the US government forced Native Americans to move west.

Start by visiting the interpretive center, with several important exhibits. Hike the peaceful grounds, taking in the beautiful natural blue spring and a panoramic overlook of the valley.

21. Fall Creek Falls

Right on the line between Middle and East Tennessee, you’ll find the highest waterfall not only in Tennessee but in the eastern United States . It’s also one of the most popular waterfalls in Tennessee , at 256-foot-tall Fall Creek Falls is a must-visit!

Choose from several trails that take you to the falls, ranging from 0.3 to 1.2 miles. Depending on the season and recent precipitation, you may even be able to swim in the pool at the base of the falls.

The state park also offers rock climbing, boating, a fun canopy obstacle course, campsites, cabins, and even a golf course.

Perfectly positioned between Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville, Fall Creek Falls is easily accessible from anywhere in the state.

22. Museum of Appalachia

Even if you’re not much of a museum person, the Museum of Appalachia in Clinton is one of the best places to visit in East Tennessee.

Visitors rave about how well-done the museum is, noting that it feels like an authentic step back in time. With over 30 historic buildings and exhibits, the “Living Mountain Village” offers a real glimpse into the daily life of early Appalachian pioneers .

The onsite restaurant also gets rave reviews, so come hungry!

Final Thoughts

East Tennessee Americana culture is easy to explore from Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg, the gem of East Tennessee , is thought of as the Gateway of the Smokies. Many travelers use it as a launching point for exploration into the national park . But for those who live in the area, or who are staying for more than a few days, Gatlinburg itself can be home base for day trips that show off the area’s wilderness, arts and culture, and music. There’s a nearby day trip destination for families, outdoor aficionados and even beer drinkers.  

While Asheville is over the border in North Carolina, it’s just 80 miles east of Gatlinburg, and the slow, winding drive there takes you through the blue-green bounty of the Smoky Mountains. Once you arrive, you’ll experience a mountain arts community in all its quirkiness. Asheville is known for its community of makers who sculpt, paint, and blow glass.

Spend some of your time here browsing the best art galleries and studios, particularly in the River Arts District. Afterward, grab a beer at one of the city’s many (many) breweries. In fact, Asheville calls itself Beer City U.S.A. because of the love of craft beer in the offbeat city. Lace-up your boots and take a hike to Looking Glass Rock, particularly in fall when the leaves are changing color . If you want to see how the 1% live, take a tour of the famous Biltmore Estate and its gardens (which were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted) before your return.

For many people, particularly those who live in Gatlinburg, it is Knoxville that is known as the Gateway to the Smokies, because of its airport. Just an hour west of Gatlinburg, it is a town where you can spend a day (or several) before or after your Smoky Mountains vacation. Knoxville is sometimes overlooked by showier Tennessee towns, but that’s to your advantage. Football fans, of course, know to come here in the fall when the University of Tennessee Volunteers take to the field. Year-round there’s a great maker scene, with small boutiques and artists’ studios showing off locally made wares in cool neighborhoods, such as Old City and Happy Holler. Head to Knoxville Adventure Collective to paddleboard or kayak on the Tennessee River.

Knoxville is 35 miles northwest of Gatlinburg. Traffic can get backed up through the Pigeon Forge area, so leave extra time if taking this day trip on busy weekends. The route through Sevierville is about 10 miles longer, but can take the same amount of time because much of it is on the I-40 Interstate. If going through Sevierville, stop downtown and see the statue of Dolly Parton , the area’s beloved hometown hero.

Seven Islands State Birding Park

You might not think that people who live in Gatlinburg, so close to the Smoky Mountains, would ever go anywhere else to get outside. But locals love Seven Islands State Birding Park , a relatively new addition to the state park system just 29 miles north of Gatlinburg. Nestled on the French Broad River near Knoxville, it offers easy access for paddling and fishing (there are more than 50 species of fish in this waterway), but the real attraction is what is in the air.

From here you can explore eight miles of trails that wind through meadows, with native wildflowers and the pollinators and birds they attract. It is not unusual to hear songbirds and see hawks, ducks and owls. Rangers lead walks and family-friendly educational programming throughout the surrounding habitat. A paved one-way path makes it easy to ride your bike down to the river. Or you can just take in the colorful skies and the Smoky Mountains in the background. Access to Seven Islands is free, making this a good cheap day trip from Gatlinburg.

The mountain town of Bristol, 115 miles northeast of Gatlinburg, is famous for straddling two states. The border between Virginia and Tennessee runs down the middle of the city’s main drag (called State Street). But the ability to get a quirky photo of yourself standing in two states at one time isn’t the real reason to gas up the car and drive to Bristol. In 1927, a talent scout named Ralph Peer came to town to record Appalachian musicians who played in these hills. This series of recordings, called the Bristol Sessions, are considered to be the first recordings of country music ever made. Learn all about them at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum , a Smithsonian affiliate which has its own radio station, exhibits, live music, and more.

After checking out the museum and its museum, stroll through downtown. Shop at L.C. King, which makes denim apparel in the U.S.A. right from its historic Bristol factory. Eat at Burger Bar, a place for hot dogs, burgers, and shakes, which claims to be the last place country music icon Hank Williams ate before his untimely death. Grab a sweet treat at the 24-hour Blackbird Bakery before heading back to the Smokies.

McMinnville

Then take some time to sit by the falls at Rock Island State Park . Journey below the surface of the earth on a tour of Cumberland Caverns , which has more than 30 miles of passageways filled with rock formations, underground waterfalls and pools. You’ll find clothing, jewelry and antiques at shops like the Red Door Boutique , The Lazy Daisy , The Rustic Touch and Lemon Clothing & Cosmetics . Outdoor adventure waits for you in Tullahoma . Kick off your visit with a stroll through Tims Ford State Park on some of the 6.5 miles of unpaved hiking trails. Seven miles of paved biking trails connect to the major areas of the park. Explore the multi-use mountain biking trail that runs along the shoreline of Tims Ford Reservoir. Spend time on Tims Ford Lake which has eight public boat ramps and two marinas. Take a swing at The Bear Trace at Tims Ford , a Jack Nicklaus-designed course with Champion Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways. Plan your course to Machine Falls, a more than 60-foot waterfall, and enjoy wildflowers and mountain laurel on your way to the view. Rutledge Falls is also close by. Though privately owned, you can hike to the falls from dawn to dusk. If you want your trip to be educational, stop by the Beechcraft Heritage Museum , reopening May 4, 2021, where you’ll find historic planes on display. Have a meal at the fine dining establishment One22West or keep things casual with a burger, panini or tacos from Daddy Billy’s Restaurant & Bar . Enjoy a refreshing beer from Ole Shed Brewing Co. like the Haystack IPA, light bodied Honey Do Golden Ale or the robust Pot Belly Porter.

Monteagle 

Adventure is calling you to Monteagle where you can embark on the Fiery Gizzard in South Cumberland State Park . South Cumberland State Park is located within four Tennessee counties and has 30,845 acres in nine separate areas for you to explore. Choose your adventure with over 90 miles of hiking trails, rock climbing, fishing and birding. On the Fiery Gizzard, you can hike a 1.3-mile easy, roundtrip Meadow Trail Hike where you'll see wildflowers and views of the pond; the Foster Falls to Small Wilds where you'll hike 5 miles out-and-back that lead you to waterfalls and lovely overlooks; or Sycamore Falls Loop, a moderate 3-mile hike that showcase rock formations and waterfalls. Journey underneath the earth to nearby The Caverns for a cave tour where you'll see an underground room three football fields long, hear about cave lore and more. The Caverns is home to the Emmy Award-winning show Bluegrass Underground . Currently for 2021, the show is being held above ground at the outdoor, physically distanced amphitheater. Check out the line up and catch a show. Take a scenic drive to Cookeville , tucked away in Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland region . The town has so much to see and do, you’ll easily go back for another day (or three) of exploring. If you are looking for a natural playground, you’ll find a number of caves, lakes, streams, waterfalls and hiking trails to beautiful overlooks within a short driving distance from town. For a more relaxed scene, go downtown where you’ll find murals for the perfect selfie and adorable boutiques like Poppie’s Boutique and 31TwentyFive filled with clothing, jewelry and home accents. 1. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park offers some incredible hiking trails, not to mention horseback riding, swimming, and fishing – but its real attraction is a lot more unique.

Affectionately known as the “Niagara of the South”, Cumberland Falls itself is a 125-foot-wide cascade of water, roaring off a 60-foot drop that is a spectacle to behold, whatever the weather.

It also boasts the title of hosting the only “moonbow” in the western hemisphere – a phenomenon wherein a rainbow is formed by the light of the moon instead of the sun!

1. Dollywood Express

The closest thing to a train ride in Gatlinburg, Tennessee , the Dollywood Express isn’t a long journey, but it makes a memorable impression nevertheless.

Utilizing a 110-ton, coal-fired steam engine, the Dollywood Express covers about 5 miles through the Great Smoky Mountains wilderness and lasts about 20 minutes.

This train is listed among the rides and attractions at the Dollywood Theme Park, and the trip is included in the price of park admission.

Admission to the park is $92 for a one-day pass, $119 for a two-day pass, or $129 for a three-day pass. Discounts are available for children, seniors, and military families.

2. Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

Although the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway isn’t technically a train ride, it consistently makes the list of best Tennessee train rides and is always included in the rundown of Chattanooga, Tennessee  train rides.

The incline railway at Lookout Mountain  is actually the second of its kind. It has been in operation since 1895, and it put the original version (established in 1887) out of business in 1899.

It was originally created to transport folks up to a hotel at the mountain’s summit.

Despite several tragedies (including the burning of the first hotel and upper station), the railway continues to run, with thousands of people riding it every year.

This electric rail runs Monday through Sunday from 10AM to 6PM. Tickets cost $15 round trip for adults, and $7 for children ages 3-12, but discounted group rates are available.

3. WeGo Star East Corridor

108 1 st Ave S, Nashville TN • (615) 862-5950

As our nation strives to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, it’s exciting anytime a U.S.  city manages to implement public transportation .

This Nashville TN train is part of the greater Nashville area public transit system. WeGo Star connects riders with buses all along its route, from Riverfront (in Nashville proper) to Lebanon.

Riverfront Station is on 1 st Avenue in the heart of Downtown Nashville. From there it travels east to Donelson Station, Hermitage Station, Mt. Juliet Station, Marth Station, Hamilton Springs, and Lebanon Station.

In all, the route covers around 30 miles, and takes roughly 55 minutes to get from one end to the other.

Tickets for the full ride are $5.25 (one-way), with trains running 3 times in the morning and 3 times in the evening.

Note that this is an actual commuter train. But for those who’ve never experienced that, it’s an exciting way to get acquainted with Nashville’s metro area.

4. Three Rivers Rambler

There’s essentially only one viable option for scenic train rides in Knoxville TN, the Three Rivers Rambler.

It’s been operating as a tourist train since 2000, taking riders from Downtown Knoxville to the start of the Tennessee River .

The depot for the 3RR is at University Commons, near the UT campus. This area is packed with trendy stores and hip restaurants , so you can combine that with the train ride for a fun day of exploring.

Their fleet of engines is varied, including multiple steam engines. Three Rivers Rambler train rides  last about 2 hours, with boarding starting 20 minutes before departure.

The most popular of their Knoxville train rides is the Christmas Lantern Express, which runs 3 times a day on the weekends leading up to Christmas and several consecutive days leading up to  Christmas Eve.

5. Tennessee Central Railway Museum

220 Willow St, Nashville TN • (615) 244-9001

While WeGo Star is the modern-day version of Nashville train rides, the TN Central Railway Museum has more romantic incarnations of the Tennessee railways.

The museum offers several dinner trains in Nashville, including Wine Tasting Trips, Nashville Mardi Gras Excursion Train, Valenshines Moonshine Sippin’ Excursion, Murder Mystery Train Rides, and the Tennessee Fall Foliage  Excursion.

Seating options include “regular seating” at tables in the dining car, “coach seating” in comfy reclining chairs, and “dome seating” for the ultimate in panoramic views.

Tennessee Central Railway Museum excursions vary in length from 2 hours to 6+ hours. They can cost as little as $60 per person, and up to $180 depending on the seating and offerings of the particular trip.

This is a great place to go for a train ride  that celebrates life on the rails and has lots of fun while doing it.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

The Chattanooga train rides offered by the Tennessee Valley Railroad are hands down the best place for a memorable Tennessee train experience.

This location has a varied selection of popular excursions, and we would be remiss if we didn’t include several on this list.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s mission is to preserve, operate, and showcase railroad artifacts to the public in the most authentic way possible.

Chattanooga has been in the railway game since before the Civil War , and the museum strives to continue that tradition.

They offer many different train rides in Chattanooga, and extend into the countryside around the mountain town .

6. Tennessee Valley Railroad: Hiwassee Loop/Copperhill Special

The Hiwassee Loop is a 50-mile round-trip excursion that takes 5 hours.

It traverses the Hiwassee River Gorge and corkscrews up a mountain on a route that formerly connected Etowah TN and Marietta GA on the Louisville & Nashville Railroads’ Atlanta Division.

Standard fare on this Hiwassee River Rail Adventure is $56 for adults and $38 for children ages 2-12. There are also cars with dome roofs for amazing views that cost a little over $100 per person.

The Copperhill Special is an extended version of this trip, traveling from Delano TN to McCaysville GA (near the town of Blue Ridge GA ).

It takes about 8 hours, and is 94 miles round-trip. Note that his route only runs from July to November.

7. Tennessee Valley Railroad: Missionary Ridge Local

The simplest of the Chattanooga TN  train rides is the Missionary Ridge Local.

It’s called “the local” because it is a relatively short tour lasting around 65 minutes.

This ride is just 6 miles round-trip, and involves a tour guide providing local history to deepen the visitor experience.

Highlights along the journey include crossing four bridges , a historic turntable to rotate the train, a pre- Civil War train tunnel, and a visit to train restoration shops.

8. Tennessee Valley Railroad: Summerville Steam Special

The Summerville Steam Special is a serious undertaking that involves 9 hours of travel, departing from Grand Junction in Chattanooga and wandering down to the tiny town of  Summerville GA .

This train departs at 9AM and returns at 6PM, and their ticket prices are very reasonable for an all-day adventure.

Coach rides with no lunch are only $75. You can add a boxed lunch for $10, or do lunch in the dining car for $95 total.

In reality, most of this trip is through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia , as opposed to Tennessee . But it’s a rare opportunity to spend a full day on a steam-driven train!

9.  Tennessee Valley Railroad:  Dinner Train

This 2-hour TVRM Dinner Train excursion is among their most popular journeys because it offers fine dining on a different stratosphere.

The trip is offered on select Fridays and Saturdays from March through October, departing from Grand Junction and making its way through East Chattanooga .

All Dinner Train rides include a gourmet 3-course meal, with fares ranging from $166 for shared tables of 4 to $300 for reserved tables of 4.

They offer meal choices to suit all tastes, including beef, chicken, fish, and vegetarian. Dessert options include Triple Chocolate Cake, Apple Pie, or Cheesecake.

10. Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society

110 South 2nd St, Jonesborough TN • (423) 753-5797

Jonesborough TN’s Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society hosts steam train rides through the Smoky Mountains .

This train departs from Bryson City NC , but there are coaches from Kingsport TN and Johnson City TN to catch the train in Bryson City .

The ticket window at the Bryson City Depot opens at 10:30AM, and trains return about 6 hours later at 4:30PM.

Their ridiculously scenic route passes Fontana Lake , follows the Little Tennessee River, crosses the Fontana Lake Trestle, and dives into the Nantahala Gorge.

Ticket options include First Class with Club Car seating for lunch ($180), Crown Class ($121), Tourist Coach Class ($105), and Open-Air Coach Class ($107). All classes come with a boxed lunch.
