Del Amitri: Symphony Hall, Birmingham – live review

“Don’t assume we’ve mellowed,” warn Del Amitri. They prove it with a set that’s snarling, soothing and sublime in equal measure. Sam Lambeth reviews.

Looking like vagabonds from a medicine show, The Byson Family certainly fit the bill of their huckster-sounding name. They may not possess snake oil, but they have voices that could persuade any passing rube to part with their cash.

Opener Blowout, bathed in reverb-drenched guitars, strident keys and singer Philip Seth Campbell’s raspy howl, rattles the room with the brio of a barroom band.

Bringing together the soul of Hothouse Flowers, the country dust of Band of Horses and the inventiveness of The Band, The Byson Family have a rootsy recipe that will ensure they entertain many more than just those in the family circle.

Sidling against one another, Del Amitri ‘s Justin Currie and Iain Harvie begin proceedings in a more mellow manner. When You Were Young is transformed into a mellow reflection of lost youth, all the more resonant as the years have advanced.

However, it’s not all gentle philosophising. Del Amitri have always possessed a working-class frustration – with love, life and politics – that always bubbles ominously beneath the surface.

New album Fatal Mistakes – “our hit top five album,” Currie wryly comments at one point – is an acerbic addition to their fine back catalogue, and the snarling Musicians and Beer and the lavish lamentations of Close Your Eyes and Think of England fit perfectly alongside the chiming Always the Last to Know and Kiss This Thing Goodbye.

The snake-hipped Harvie is an admirable guitar slinger, able to showcase his dexterity with the sliding Move Away Jimmy Blue and the soaring Here and Now. A triumvirate of songs taken from 1997’s Some Other Sucker’s Parade is also welcome, particularly the strutting Won’t Make It Better and the stately Mother Nature’s Writing.

Musically, Del Amitri have been able to pivot between thumping power pop and more reflective folk, and tonight is a firm reminder of their diversity. Mockingbird Copy Me Now is plaintive and pretty, Be My Downfall fragile and forlorn, and Empty a traffic-stopping torch song.

Tell Her This, buoyed by Andy Alston’s mournful accordion, is a hymn to heartbreak, while the potency of Nothing Ever Happens remains as strong now as it did over thirty years ago.

With his floppy grey hair and all-denim outfit, Currie resembles an off-work Damon Hill as he, tongue violently in cheek, introduces ubiquitous hit Roll To Me as “breezy pop.” But for all the fanfare surrounding the song, it remains an instant charmer, enough to propel the Symphony Hall crowd up from their seats, remaining upright for the rest of the show.

For Del Amitri, the night ends as it begins – the gang gathered together, singing with earnest longing over gentle acoustics. Everyone who knows the band, though, knows that there’s plenty of vitality and rage still lying in between.

Del Amitri are on Facebook and Twitter .

A view from the back of the room: del amitri (live review by matt bladen).

Del Amitri, St David's Hall, 13 September 2021

Ah I hear those cries now. "Del Amitri aren't heavy! They're a pop band" Well you're wrong, live they are as heavy as any hard rock act, with a lot more diversity in the music and lyrics that would make doom bands loose hope. Plus I was attending this gig with one of my best and most trusted friends (henceforth referred to as M'colleague in true Fry & Laurie style) so essentially this review is for him but you can read it if you want.

Now we managed to miss The Byford Family (not Biff & Son), the new band featuring ex-Temperance Movement man Phil Campbell on vocals, this was due to travel along with the allure of food and German beer, but we managed to head into the venue with 10 minutes to spare before the main event. Taking our seats in a pretty packed St Davids Hall, a far cry from the Manics gig, I'd seen there a few weeks earlier, we masked up and awaited the arrival of one of Glasgow's most lauded bands.  At this juncture I must say it's a bloody ballsy move to play a show where you don't perform your biggest hit. But on the inaugural show of Del Amitri's 2021 tour they managed to enthral the entire St David's Hall audience without the need to perform Nothing Ever Happens . What we did get instead was nearly 2 hours of back catalogue classics such as Spit In The Rain , Move Away Jimmy Blue , Kiss This Thing Goodbye , Stone Cold Sober and Roll To Me along with tracks from their latest album Fatal Mistakes such as the bouncy Can't Go Back , the heavy Musicians And Beer and the beautiful duo of Mockingbird Copy Me Now and Lonely . Justin Currie in fine voice, delivering the bands often bittersweet lyrics against the more often than more upbeat rock backing. What you do notice when seeing the band live is that with the re-addition of Kris Dollismore to the band the songs take a heavier style his stinging Telecaster used on conjunction with founder member Ian Harvie's Les Paul and various acoustics. In fact the three guitarists (Harvie, Dollismore and Currie) switch instruments all three playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass at any one point. As they do this, all three also uniting for wonderful vocal harmonies, Andy Alston lays down the keys, organs, melodica and accordion depending on the nature of the songs, it gives the folky ballads depth and the rockers a more rounded sound. Behind the drum kit wasn't Ash Soan the bands album drummer, but whatever the name (answers on a postcard please) he carried the pace of the songs even when they couldn't remember what song was next due to Justin, Ian and Kris not having setlists in front of them! Because of this, and of course this being the first date on an extensive tour there were one or two mishaps but no one really noticed, or cared for that matter most enjoying the brilliant music and performances, the crowd singing along not only to the classics but the new songs too. With a tight, well conceived set that ebbed and flowed, there was was some usual self depreciation from Justin and Andy had a go at some Welsh. After the main set ended the encore was made up of four songs, the final one being the emotional atom bomb that is Be My Downfall , bringing many in the audience including M'colleague to tears. After this nothing else was needed. Del Amitri are an effortlessly cool band whose music often carries a message, since their reformation they have been welcomed back by countless fans and live the really deliver. As the tour roles on the jitters will subside so by the time they hit London at the end of October in preparation for two shows at the Barrowlands in Glasgow near Xmas they will be back to being a well oiled machine. 9/10

Del Amitri performing at The Royal Concert Hall Nottingham on Wednesday 15th September 2021

Images and Review by Kevin Cooper

You wait nineteen years for a new album and then a pandemic comes along forcing everything to be put on hold. But last night at the Royal Concert Hall Del Amitri were finally able to give a live outing to this year’s comeback album, Fatal Mistakes, together with some of their hits and some obscure tracks from throughout their career.

Dressed all in denim, front man Justin Currie set the scene for the evening with opener When We Were Young before introducing new songs Musicians And Beer and All Hail Blind Love which were very well received. The audience showed their appreciation for the effortlessly melodic favourite Always The Last To Know which came early in the set.

The emotionally sad Driving With The Brakes On served to remind just how good Del Amitri are, as did an exquisite version of one of Currie’s and Harvie’s greatest songs, the fantastic Move Away Jimmy Blue. With new song You Can’t Go Back being a real highlight, they began their run-in to the end with Here And Now, and fans favourite Spit In The Rain which had the crowd singing along.

With Currie’s voice being superb throughout, soulful, true and affecting, they ended the main set with Stone Cold Sober which saw him spitting out the words with as much venom as he did when he recorded it over thirty years ago.

For the encore Nothing Ever Happens garnered a massive cheer after just the first strum of Currie’s guitar, their talent brought to life by a wonderful accordion solo. Finishing with Be My Downfall their whole stage persona had been a fine balancing act of performing serious and emotional songs with some rock posturing and just honest down to earth musicianship and last night Del Amitri got it just right.

LIVE REVIEW: SIMPLE MINDS / DEL AMITRI @ NOTTINGHAM ARENA 24/03/2024

del amitri tour review

As with any band of a certain vintage rumours have been rife and discussions had about what tracks Simple Minds would be playing live over the course of this tour.  Their setlist seems to have 10 or so solid tracks that they are playing every show and then mixing up another 10 or so depending on the venue.  Whether fans agree or disagree with their pickings from their celebrated back catalogue there is one decision that cannot be argued with………the choice of support act.

Fellow Scottish rockers del Amitri have sent it all and done it all over the past 40 years.  In 45 minutes they manage to breathe new life into those four decades and not only remind the crowd of the brilliance of their own history but show that they are still very much a band on the rise once again.

Bassist/Vocalist Justin Currie’s recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease was a hammer blow to the band, not to mention the man himself, however he appears to be in ebullient mood about his health and is striding forward with vim and vigour that belies his diagnosis and 40 years of battle scars.

Amongst the tracks are smatterings of stonewall classics such as “Always The Last To Know”, “Kiss This Thing Goodbye” and “Not Where It’s At” but also modern gems like “Lonely” get an airing to remind us that they are far from a heritage act.  I would not have complained if they had played for another hour, if fact over the shouts and screams of appreciation my suggestion that they do so may have been lost.  Nevermind, though 45 minutes it was and what a 45 minutes we had.  The genius that is “Nothing Ever Happens” closes the set and if those in attendance experience a better 45 minutes of live music this year they can count themselves very fortunate.  Very fortunate indeed.

Choosing such as stellar band as support can go one of two ways.  Either it ends up like the Motley Crue/Alice Cooper tour of 2015 whereby support act Alice Cooper….yes, that’s right….support act!!!, absolutely wiped the floor with the Crue or it can inspire the headliners to bring their A-game and not rest on their considerably talented laurels.

Simple Minds are not the type that leave anything to chance and come out all guns blazing, at what must said, ear splitting volume.  Now I’ve seen Motorhead from down in the front row, close enough to lick Lemmy’s boots, so I know a thing or two about volume but this was disturbingly loud.  “Waterfront” is the tour opener and it’s a majestic track that gets the musical juices flowing and sets the mood.

Thankfully the folks in charge of the sound finally get their levels sorted by “Love Song” and all is well.  All the band are in a playful mood and the energy is high.  Tracks like “Solstice Kiss” remind the hordes that it’s not all about the classics.  That said the hits keep on coming throughout the two hours and this is a band that deals in hits.  From the funky “Promised You A Miracle” to “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” to “Alive and Kicking” it’s wall to wall quality musicianship and a thundering drive to entertain.

The aforementioned “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” does halt the charge somewhat for a while, even for frontman Jim Kerr’s tastes, remarking that the crowd participation bit might be dragging on a tad too long and is making his waiting pizza cold!!

It’s not all big anthems and party times though as the delicate ballad “Belfast Child” proves the band can deliver genuine emotion and reflection amongst the glitz and glamour of a big production arena show.

Closing with the brilliant “Sanctify Yourself” the band show that they are just as relevant in this TikTok/Twitter world as they were back in the 1980’s.  First class.

LIVE REVIEW: Del Amitri – The Astor Theatre, Perth 15th February 2023

17 February 2023 The Rockpit

It has been a while since Del Amitri last graced our shores, but we’ll let Justin address that a little later. Tonight in Perth at the first of two shows in the West, the audience was treated to witness a band that has lost nothing over the decades, but rather gained an awful lot sonically. Perth laid on a very partisan crowd by way of reception, and the Scotts in attendance got more than a taste of home, they got a musical treat that spanned a 5 decade career. The band too was on fire with Kris Dollimore (ex-Godfathers) and Iain Harvie laying down some fiery guitars whilst Justin and new drummer Jim McDermott hold down the backline, leaving the wonderful Andy Alston to weave his magic with keys and squeezebox.

Tonight’s support comes from local Perth act Vancool who have grown again in stature since we last saw them as support for UK legends The Animals. They do a great job of warming up the crowd and Dion and Co’s slick brand of guitar fueled Garage Pop goes down a treat early doors. They seem genuinely pleased to be on the famous Astor stage a put on a great show.

Some bands just have the ability to transport you back in time and it’s been three and a bit decades since I last saw Del Amitri way back in 1989 and 33 years since they last ventured Downunder. Some bands age well and these guys, well let’s just say musically Dorian Grey has nothing on them. And from the off they have the crowd – opening with the evergreen ‘When You Were Young’ from the ‘Change Everything’ album they know how to work a room, and whilst Justin remains largely quiet between songs at the start of the night he is soon regaling us with his understated wit and charm.

Early on though we’re reminded that the new material is just as compelling as the old when ‘Musicians and Beer’ surfaces from 2021’s ‘Fatal Mistakes’ which opens drenched with feedback and some tasty guitar. They immediately double down after the warm reception with another from the latest ‘ All Hail Blind Love’ which has an almost early Eagles meets The Beatles vibe.

del amitri tour review

In a beautifully paced set Justin’s sweet vocal comes to the fore on ‘Always the Last to Know’ before the wonderful melodies that really stand out tonight elevate ‘ Not Where It’s At.’ The biggest applause so far though comes with the opening chords of ‘Waking Hours’ ‘ Kiss This Thing Goodbye’ which sees some in the all seated audience get to their feet for the first time. The low key ‘ Close Your Eyes and Think of England’ underlines a band not afraid to play the new and reveals that at least half of us present own that 2021 release. Justin quips “It’s another new one, feel free to go to the bar” but no one takes up the offer! It’s my favourite from the new record next, and when the ‘Rag’ as Justin describes it, of the folky ‘Mockingbird, Copy Me Now’ rings out you know the crowd feel they’ve already had their money’s worth.

Scottish band Del Amitri are embarking on their first North American tour in 25 years, in support of their first album in nearly two decades, Fatal Mistakes .

The 23-date tour kicks off March 26 in Agoura Hills, CA and wraps up in Cleveland on April 24, with shows in most major U.S. and Canadian cities in between.

The current line-up of the band features founding member and frontman Justin Currie and longtime members Iain Harvie (guitar) and Andy Alston (keyboards). They’re augmented by guitarist Kris Dollimore and drummer Ash Soan, both of whom joined in the late 1990s.

Last year the band performed a free show for Scottish NHS (National Health Service) staff. It went down on December 9 at the famed Barrowland venue in their home city of Glasgow. The gig was the band’s first in more than two years and was their thank you to the workers who were and continue to make such a massive and selfless contribution to public health during the coronavirus crisis.

Del Amitri sold millions of albums and singles during their heyday, releasing six studio albums between 1985 and 2002. They had five consecutive top ten albums in the UK, including the 1998 compilation Hatful Of Rain , and amassed an impressive array of signature hits, 15 of which made the UK top 40. They included such anthems as “Nothing Ever Happens,” “Always The Last To Know,” “Driving With The Brakes On,” and “Roll To Me.”

DEL AMITRI at BRIDGEWATER HALL MANCHESTER LIVE REVIEW 20-9-2021

  • September 27, 2021
  • UK Concert Reviews
  • by Paul Evans Photographer/Writer

20th September 2021

The Bridgewater Hall Manchester UK

Even with the craving for live music after our 18 month interlude, filling an iconic venue to near full capacity on a Monday night is some achievement. This 18 month hiatus is however a drop in the ocean for Glasgow’s country rockers Del Amitri who have filled the majestic Bridgewater Hall in Manchester tonight. In fact, although the band have played, it’s nearly 20 years since original members, singer and bass player Justin Currie and guitarist Iain Harvie have toured a new album.  With an added guitarist, drummer, keyboard player and percussionist, tonight was about much more than simply promoting their latest album Fatal Mistakes though. It was a celebration of a decades long, musical legacy from a great band desperate to be back playing again.

In a sea of blue lights, opening song “When You Were Young” from Del Amitri’s biggest album Change Everything, is a perfect way to start the evening. The line “So look into the mirror do you recognise someone, is it who you always hoped you would become?” taking on more relevance for me tonight for some reason. New songs “Musicians and Beer” and “All Hail Blind Love”, from the aforementioned Fatal Mistakes, are next up and received with unsurprising delight by the crowd. Quite a few people I spoke to said it was their first gig for a very long time and it showed, they were ecstatic. The classic “Always the Last to Know” followed and was driven by Jim McDermott’s drumming and not for the first time, Iain’s prowling of the stage, jumping in and contributing beautiful harmonies to Justin’s vocals.

The outstanding “Not Where It’s At” and “Kiss This Thing Goodbye” from 1989’s Waking Hours continued the frenetic tempo with the crowd in the stalls all standing and the rest of the near 1,800 audience clapping and enthusiastically singing along. “You’d better sit down” says denim clad Justin, before laughingly mentioning that the band couldn’t continue at that pace all night.

Purposely slowing the pace down we were treated to the chilled, Laurel Canyon infused folk of “Mother Nature’s Writing” and the stunningly performed new song “Mockingbird, Copy Me Now”. A close call, but my favourite song of the night due to its combination of harmonies, Nick Drake finger pickin’ guitar and accordion. “Driving With the Brakes On” and “Move Away Jimmy Blue” completed a majestic run of songs sonically more conducive to the sound of the Hallé Orchestra, whose home this is, than the upbeat opening numbers.

“Manchester’s changed since the last time we played here about 15 years ago” mentioned Justin before beginning “Close Your Eyes and Think of England”, a keyboard driven track from Fatal Mistakes. By now Justin was swapping bass guitar with acoustic and Iain, resplendent in a dapper 3-piece suit was exchanging his guitars effortlessly between the classic and latest songs. “Roll To Me”, “You Can’t Go Back”, “Here and Now”, “Tell Her This” and “Lonely” bring the set near to its conclusion. I’ve got to add, “Here and Now” was outstanding, a Memphis bar song if ever I heard one with a soul-lifting middle eight and harmonies to match. The set does come to an end with the crowd swathed in yellow and green lights on their feet clapping and singing along to “Spit in the Rain” and “Stone Cold Sober”.

The crowd obviously wanted more and the band obligingly returned to a dimly lit stage for an encore which began with a sparse and stunningly sung rendition of “Empty”. I’m not sure if I’ve heard Justin sing a better vocal to be honest, a haunting vocal reminiscent of David Sylvian through my 80’s influenced ears. Another new song, the vocal harmony and dirty southern guitar driven “I’m So Scared of Dying” proceeds “Nothing Ever Happens”, their biggest single. A hit which brought back some great memories from my Manchester youth. The hairs on the back of my neck standing up when the sound and vocal went up a notch for the line “Angry from Manchester”. A close choice for my song of the night it’s got to be said.

“Be My Downfall” with Iain’s beautiful harmonies again complementing both, the accordion and Justin’s vocals stunningly ends the night. The whole crowd joining in on a final chorus was a perfect way to end an exceptional evening. It was certainly so good to see an ecstatic, enthusiastic crowd and also a band at the height of their powers who looked glad to be back. A band not just looking to the past, but one whose new material is as good, if not better than their million selling records of their past 41 years together. Barrowlands you’re in for a treat.

Review: Del Amitri at Astor Theatre

Del Amitri at Astor Theatre w/ Vancool Wednesday, February 15, 2023

It’s been thirty-three years since del Amitri’s last visit to our sunny shores, and the love for the Scottish band is enough to have scored them this extra show, tacked on at the start of the tour. As a result, they played to a slightly less-than-full house to start their Aussie run, but the warm reception more than made up for the few empty seats up the back.

Dion Mariani’s newish outfit  Vancool  opened the night’s entertainment with a lively and impassioned set of sunshiny and jangly guitar pop, with hints of Britpop and garage influences. It’s impossible to mention this talented young man without referencing his revered uncle Dom, shining light of The Stems, The DM3, The Someloves, Datura4 and more: the musical Force is strong in this family.

Already well known to supporters of local bands through The Flairz, Custom Royal, et al, Dion is a born entertainer yet still showed a lot of grace and humility on stage, congratulating his parents on their wedding anniversary, and admitting how thrilled the band were to be playing the gorgeous old Astor Theatre.

Just Because You Like It, Save It For A Rainy Day, It’s Gonna Be Alright  and  For The Rest Of Your Life  are all catchier than your average coronavirus and infinitely more fun to have in your life.

The lights then dimmed and with zero ado  del Amitr i's Iain Harvey and Justin Currie delivered a sweetly subdued  When You Were Young , then with a change of guitars and Harvie shaking his flowing locks out of his man bun, they launch into the meaty riff of excellent new track  Musicians & Beer .

There was a lot of new material in the set, showcasing the group's latest album  Fatal Mistakes , their first in almost twenty years. At one point Currie admitted that they don’t mind if you go to the bar during these less-familiar tracks, but there’s no hint of 'new stuff versus old stuff.' It’s all just del Amitri stuff, and damn fine stuff at that.

It was the Currie and Harvie show, really. They’ve kept del Amitri alive through the years, though they’re ably supported by new drummer Jim McDermott, guitarist Kris Dollimore (a founding member of The Godfathers, which may explain his suit, tie, and sunglasses on-stage combo, he’s been with del Amitri since 1997), and long-time keys and accordion player Andy Alston, who joined in 1989.

del amitri tour review

Currie and Harvie are diametric opposites on stage: the guitarist is the band’s secret weapon, all scarecrow thin and Catweazel-like as he energetically provided a dervish-like focal point, whilst the bass playing frontman is the eye of the storm in double denim, calm and relatively still.

If Currie chooses to let his voice do the heavy lifting, he’s more than entitled. His vocals, even thirty-plus years after their biggest hits, are warm and resonant. If anything, they’re more nuanced, like a warm hug from a loved one.

Kiss This Thing Goodbye  got the audience dancing and singing along in full voice (which is not bad for a breakup song) before Currie finally addressed the audience directly. “It’s lovely to be here, lovely to see you, and all that patronising shit,” he said. It served to break the ice and perhaps help him out of his shell, and although never approaching garrulous, he did interact more from this point.

There’s a warmth, a deep soulfulness, which sets del Amitri above most of their contemporaries, and there’s nowhere that is more evident than when seeing the band live. The musicians and even their road crew are so well-honed they hit the sweet spot where being well-rehearsed and also spontaneous co-exist in perfect harmony.

del amitri tour review

“This song is much too fast to play in your fifties,” Currie quipped of  Roll To Me , before jokingly asking Harvie “should I do some drugs, Iain?” It turns out the song is exactly fast enough: lively and engaging, and of course Currie delivered it seemingly effortlessly.

Tremendous run throughs of  Spit in the Rain  and  Stone Cold Sober  finished the main set, before amassed stomping and chanting brought the quintet back on stage for a genuinely moving  Empty,  followed by  Gone in a Second , the latter of which is a rarity from the  Fatal Mistakes  sessions of which Currie declares they’d “never played this one in front of an audience.”

It sounded great from our seats, but the singer noted in good humour, “as long as we start at the same time, finish at the same time, who gives a fuck what happens in between?”

Old favourite  Nothing Ever Happens , one of del Amitri’s biggest chart hits, had The Astor Theatre choir in full voice, before another great newie,  I’m so Scared of Dying . The entire band downed tools apart from Alston’s accordion for a semi-acapella  Be My Downfall , ending the night as they started it, semi-acoustically.

You simply couldn’t have hoped for a better del Amitri gig, even all these years later, and the band couldn’t have hoped for a better response to their first Antipodean show in thirty-three years. If we could go back again for night two and experience it all again, we would.

Del Amitri

More than 600 concerts (and counting)…

plus who knows how many radio shows, in-stores, record company promotions not to mention the cafes, pubs, living rooms and street corners. It is very tempting to troop out hoary old tales of the grind and the glamour of a life on the road; smashed guitars, power failures, shows in car parks and ploughed fields or of long nights drinking on tour buses as the miles to the next town ticked by, and, ultimately, to tell of the sheer joy of performing your songs night after night around the world. But the truth is that you probably really did have to be have been there – in the back of an AC30 with a screwdriver during the show, or sitting up front with the driver with a bottle of whisky at 4am watching the white lines and the lightning, or on stage in the sold-out club thousands of miles from home. Looking back it is much more interesting to ponder the stories of the hundreds of thousands of people who came to the shows, people who might drive for hours to see the band play in a half empty dive in Iowa, or fly half way round the world to experience a show in Scotland. What was it about the first album that resonated so powerfully with the people of Lisbon in 1985? Who were the young couple in the virtually deserted field in Besançon who knew the words to our songs? What was it like to be packed into an outrageously over-sold Barrowland Ballroom in December 1990 to see the return of a triumphant young band to Glasgow from a world tour? Why, after over a decade, does it all still mean so much to people that they continue to fill venues to see del Amitri perform?
