Delhi’s National Zoological Park is one of the favourite hangout areas for families, particularly the ones with small kids. Located in the heart of the city, Delhi Zoo is spread in an area of 176-acres and is situated near the Old Fort.

The National Zoological Park houses about 1350 animals and birds of over 130 species, sourced from across the globe. From the Royal Bengal Tiger to the Indian Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Asiatic Lion, Brow Antlered Deer, and Red Jungle Fowl, the Delhi Zoo houses them all.

The idea of having a Zoo in the national capital first struck in 1952, when the Indian Board of Wildlife thought that there should be a place like this in Delhi. The idea was to create a place which will be of recreation value to the people as well as can impart some level of knowledge too.

The thought was appreciated and accordingly, a committee, that included names like Smt Indira Gandhi, was constituted. The committee approved the site between Purana Qila and Humayun’s Tomb to construct the zoo, when it first met on 9th September 1953.

The then Central Government had to build the park and then hand it over to the Delhi Government as the wildlife was to be managed by the Forest Department of the state government. N D Bachkheti, an Indian Forest Service Officer was chosen on 1st October 1955 to do the task.

Major Weinmann, Director of the Ceylon Zoological Garden, Colombo, was entrusted with the task of helping in making the plan of the zoological park. Although he gave a report along with a plan, he wasn’t available for regular consultations.

Further, the government sought services of Carl Hagenbeck, owner of the famous Animal Park at Hamburg, West Germany. He introduced the idea of open moat enclosures in Delhi Zoo. He came up with the concept of moat enclosures and prepared a preliminary plan of the zoo by March 1956. In the plan, he made provisions of roads, waterways, paths, sewage systems and animal enclosures, all that is desired to make the zoo an attractive place. The plan was reviewed and approved with amendments by the government on 31st December, 1956.

It took about three years for the zoo to get constructed. The construction was over by the end of 1959, where the zoo with roads, moats, waterways, animal houses, ponds, lawns and plantation had come into being.

After the completion of construction of the zoo was announced, a lot of state governments and individuals started gifting animals to be kept there. The collection included Tigers, Leopards, Monkeys, Bears, Antelope, Dear and many bird species.

The National Zoological Park was finally inaugurated by Punjab Rao Deshmukh, Hon'ble Minister of the Government of India on 1st November, 1959. It was then named as Delhi Zoo. However, with the idea of making it a model zoo for the entire country, it was given the status of National Zoological Park in 1982.

Ever since, the environment of the zoo has been maintained in such a way that it gives the animals and birds living there a feeling of their natural home.

Entry Fees & Timings

The entry fee of Delhi zoo is as follows: Indians: Rs.40 (Adults), Rs. 20 (Children from 5-12 years), Rs. 20 (Senior Citizens) Foreigners: Rs. 200 (Adults), Rs. 100 (Children from 5-12 years). Entry is free for Children below 5 years of age.

The zoo is open on all days, except Fridays and national holidays. From 1st April to 15th October, the timings are 9 AM to 4.30 PM. However, during winters, from 16th October to 31st March, the timings are 9.30 AM to 4.00 PM.

Instructions for visiting the National Zoological Park

• One is not allowed to take food items, except milk and porridge for babies, inside the zoo campus. If you want to eat something, you can visit the cafes built within the premises. This has been done to ensure the safety of the animals.
• Teasing animals or an attempt to hurt them is a punishable offence. So, it should be avoided by all means.
• The zoo authorities provide for filming of various levels within the zoo premises. But one needs to seek permission for that.
• The best time to visit the zoo is during winters, when you can afford to walk on a sunny day. It is a fairly long area to cover, so having enough energy is important.

How to reach

DTC Bus: There are a whole lot of buses that ply towards Delhi Zoo. They include 894A, 445, 374, 402, 403, 405,419,423, 425,429, 438 and 966.

Metro: Nearest metro station to Delhi Zoo is Pragati Maidan Metro Station on the Blue line. It is at a distance of 2.2 km from the Zoo.

1. Purana Qila or Quila: Purana Qila (formerly called as Shergarh & Sher Fort) is one of the oldest forts in Delhi and India which has been inhabited for nearly 2500 years. History of National Zoological Park:

The main motive of establishing a zoo in the national capital was to provide a healthy and inexpensive breakaway to the habitants and the tourists. The National Board for Wildlife (formerly Indian Board of Wildlife) was constituted in 1951 made a special appeal to establish a zoo in Delhi. To this, a special committee was formed under the secretaryship of E.F. Bowring Walsh, who at that time was the secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals.

With funds from the Central Government and the project getting executed from the State Government, the plan for building a zoo was now on its path. A report on the layout plan was presented to the Government of India in March 1956 and by December 1956, the government gave the nod to start the work on the plan. The construction of the zoo was completed by 1959 with roads, waterways, ponds, fences and animal houses been constructed alongside some lawns and plantation did.

With the news of the development of a zoo in Delhi spreading across the country, many zoos from different cities of India gifted many animals to the zoo authorities. The zoo was formally inaugurated on 1st November 1959 and was initially called as Delhi Zoo. In 1982, the name of the zoo was later changed to National Zoological Park from Delhi Zoo.

About Delhi Zoo

The park was initially known as “Delhi Zoo” but it was renamed as “National Zoological Park” in 1982.

Over the years, the National Zoological Park Delhi has undergone several renovations and improvements. In 1982, a new entrance was constructed for the Zoo and Zoo was divided into several sections based on the type of Animals there. The Zoo underwent a major renovation in 2008 which included the construction of new enclosers and habitats for the animals.

Today, the Delhi Zoo is considered to be one of the most popular and well-maintained Zoo in India. It attracts thousands of visitors every year. National Zoological Park, Delhi Overview

Inaugurated in 1959, National Zoological Park also known as Chidiya Ghar is situated near The Old Fort in Delhi  and is a favourite weekend spot among adults and children alike. Delhi Zoo, Delhi Overview

Delhi Zoo is the most apt place for all the animal lovers as it is an enclosed structure wherein animals of different species are kept on display. This way it solves the dual purpose of being a tourist attraction and also keeping the animals safely. Delhi Zoo is a home to 1350 animals representing almost 130 species on a land of 176 acre or 71 hectares. Delhi Zoo has been designed for the convenience of the visitors as they can explore it on foot or enjoy it on a battery operated vehicles, which can be taken on rent at the zoo. They also have a few important rules to its rule book and it is made sure that the rules are followed by the visitors. Some of the important rules are that apart from drinking water, nothing else is permitted to be taken inside the zoo. However, there is a full-fledged canteen to cater to the hunger demands of the visitors. One of the important rules is that people are not allowed to go too near to the cages of especially the wild animals or to irritate them.

History The idea of creating a zoo in Delhi was much older than its execution. It was in 1951 that the idea of having a zoo in the heart of India, New Delhi. However, its inauguration dates to November 1959. A committee was appointed in the year 1952 by the Indian Board for Wildlife for the development of the zoo. The idea of the Government of India was to construct the zoo and then make it a functioning enterprise. It was in 1953, when the exact site of the zoo was finalized by the esteemed committee which was formed for a similar purpose. After the finalization of the location of the zoo, the project of creating of the zoo was assigned to N. D. Bachkheti of the Indian Forest Service. The end of the year 1959 marked the completion of the Northern Part of the zoo and also it was then that the animals that were sheltered in pen homes were finally shifted to their permanent homes. Officially the park was inaugurated in 1959 as the Delhi Zoo, however, the name was further changed to National Zoological Park with the belief that it would act as a model for other zoos thriving in the country. Exhibits Taking a left from the very entrance of the zoo will make one land into the enclosures of the animals wherein the animals will range among Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Spider Monkey, African Wild Buffalo, Giraffes, Gir Lion, and Zebras. To the left of the entrance one will find certain migratory birds like peafowl, as well as hyenas, macaques, and jaguars in addition to the other animals. For the water birds, specific swamps have been developed to provide them with the feel of their original habitat. Conservation breeding The most significant part of the zoo is that it supports the conservation breeding programs of animals like Central Zoo Authority for the Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Asiatic Lion, Brow Antlered Deer, and Red Jungle Fowl.

History About National Zoological Park, Delhi

Also named as Chidiya Ghar or famous as Delhi Zoo. National Zoological Park is one of the most happening place for kids in New Delhi . Filled with thousands of beautiful birds, lush greenery and wild cats – it’s really one place to be in. A home to 22000 animals with 130 species of animals and birds, it can be seen either by foot or by battery – operated vehicle. Spread over 214 acres, it was established in the year 1959.

The Pathways

Basically there are two pathways, one which leads to the library and the other which houses rare species of animals and birds. The list includes Hippopotomus, White Tiger, Spider Monkey, Gir Lion, Hyena, Axis deer, Peafowl, Hog Dear, Banteng, Emu, Macauque, African Wild Buffalow and so on. There is also a section of where Snakes are kept. In this section one can see varied snakes including Python and Indian Cobra.

This is the best place to plan a family picnic. Every winters in the months of October – March one can see various migratory birds. Various Conservative breeding plans too are carried out for Royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic Lion, Red Jungle Fowl, Brown Antelered Deer, Swamp Deer and Red Jungle fowl.

In addition to these there are around 200 varieties of trees which are displayed with their uses.

The other section leads to a huge library where one can read about various flora and fauna. There is no entrance fee to it.

Zoological Park - Home To Endangered Animals And Birds

Zoological Park not only provides habitat for endangered species, but also help them breed well. Special attractions at the zoo include white tigers, gaurs, jaguars, rhinos, elephants, sangai, lion-tailed macaques and migratory birds (winter). The park officially opened on November 1st. By Punjab Rao Deshmukh, Honorary Minister of the Government of India, 1959. The park was originally known as Delhi Zoo. In 1982, it was granted National Zoo status with the idea of ​​being a model zoo for the country. HOW TO REACH ZOOLOGICAL PARK

• Flight - Delhi's airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is well connected to cities in India and around the world. There are regular flights to Delhi from Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Goa, Kolkata, Guwahati, and international destinations. The airport is divided into two terminals, Terminal 1D and Terminal 3. Terminal 1D is the domestic airport, primarily used by low-cost airlines such as SpiceJet, Indigo and Go Air. Terminal 3 or T3, as it is commonly known, is the international terminal used by all international and domestic regular fare airlines flying to Delhi.
• Road - Delhi is also well connected by bus to cities such as Jaipur, Agra, Alwar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dehradun and even Kathmandu. Delhi's main bus stations are the interstate bus terminals at Kashmiri Gate, Anand vihar and Sarai Kale Khan. Apart from that, there is Mandi House (near Barakhamba Road) which offers regular air-conditioned bus service to Himachal Pradesh hill stations such as Shimla, Manali and Kasauli.
• Rail - Delhi is the headquarters of the Northern Railway and has his five main railway stations: New Delhi Station, Old Delhi Station, Nizamuddin Railway Station, Anand Vihar Station and Sarai Rohilla Station. New Delhi Railway Station is one of the stations where most trains depart from Delhi and is located in Paharganj near Connaught Place. There is a prepaid taxi stand outside the train station, from which you can hail a taxi for further travel around the city.

About Delhi Zoo - National Zoological Park

Located amidst of thriving urbane Delhi, National Zoological Park spreads over 176 acres. The plan to set up this zoo in New Delhi was formulated in 1952 and the park was launched in 1959. Spread over 180 acres it is an abode to species of 46 mammals, 34 birds and 12 reptiles along with 80 different kinds of abundant plant genus.

The right section has separate segments housing Zebras, Asiatic Lions, Hippopotamus, Spider Monkey, Wild Buffalo, Giraffes, etc. whereas in left part one can come across various migratory birds like Peafowl, Jaguar, Hyenas etc. In the center part, a basement is constructed for reptiles.

The park also happens to indulge in conservation initiatives belonging to the Central Zoo Authority, in collaboration with the other animal zoos of India. It’s not exactly brooding over history or adventure sports but a day spent in the Delhi Zoo can be most definitely be enjoyed with friends and family, or inquisitive minds contemplating over Charles Darwin’s theories. Sometimes as a traveler you just need the companionship of gazing, curious creatures rather than hectic, blabbering humans. The Zoo can be visited during most of the time of the year. You can visit the entire Zoo on foot by following the route mentioned by Zoo authorities. However, it could get boring if you plan to visit the zoo in two hours. If you follow the path suggested by authorities very strictly and do not spend much time at the enclosures, you can cover it in two hours. If you are on a tight schedule, this could be a wise decision. For the people visiting with their family or friends and have ample time, you need at least 4 to 5 hours. Inside the zoo, there are various places where you would definitely want to spend some time. Apart from Animal’s Enclosure,  Bird section and the reptile section are worth watching. In Birds section, many colorful birds of various species are housed. You would be able to see the white peacock, Macaw birds, White Vulture, Red Macaw, Kite, Grey Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill, etc. In the Snake section, magnificent species such as King Cobra, Python are some of the main attractions among others.

Timings of Delhi Zoo are 9.00 AM to 4.30 PM from 1st April to 15th October (Summer) and 9.30 AM to 4 PM from 16th October to 31st March (winter). It remains closed on Every Friday and National Holidays (26 January, 2 October, and 15 August). The Zoo has different timings during the winter and summer season. The timing of sunset and sunrise differs during different seasons which led to the different timings of Delhi Zoo. It records the maximum number of visitors on Saturday, Sunday, and on Holidays.

Restrictions in Delhi Zoo

There are some restrictions inside the Delhi Zoo. There is a certain number of items restricted in Delhi Zoo for the safety of animals as well as visitors. Items such as Food, Alcohol, Tobacco, cigarettes, lighter, fire items, weapons, polythene, etc. are not allowed in the Zoo. Visitors are allowed to take the water bottle inside the Zoo. You may fill the water bottles from various water coolers present inside the zoo campus. If one feels hungry or the need for snacks, the cafeteria is located inside the Zoo. One must not tease and feed animals and birds. Visitors should follow all the rules and regulations laid out by the Zoo authorities. Do not try to go near the enclosures of the wild animals. The Delhi Zoological Park remained in news in 2014 due to the death of a person named Maksood in White Tiger Enclosure. To avoid any such incident in the future, zoo authorities have taken multiple steps. It is also the responsibility of the visitors to keep vigilant and avoid breaking any rules.

The best times to visit Delhi are from October to March when the weather is cool and dry. It is also the peak season for India travel. Crowds and higher prices are usual.

April to June is the hot season in Delhi. Monsoon rains occur from late June to September. It is still possible to tour Delhi in these months, but get ready for the heat or (heavy) showers. Lower prices and less-crowded attractions are rewards.

• Key festivals: New Year's Day, Lohri (a harvest festival)

Although Delhi is located in the tropics, Delhi's winter can be chilly (due to its continental location). Bring winter clothes especially in the evenings.

It can still be a little chilly in February. But the sunny and clear weather is suitable for all kinds of activities like visiting historical sites, going to the parks, and taking part in special activities like an Indian cooking class .

With no holidays to boost numbers in this high season month, there is less crowding, so February is a good high-season time if you want to enjoy the weather and relatively quieter attractions.

Delhi in May — Hottest Month

May is the hottest month in Delhi. The scorching heat deters many tourists. You can enjoy quieter temples in May.

Remember to prepare sun protection for daytime sightseeing. Evening sightseeing could be a good option. The sunset view at the Red Fort and the night view of Indian Gate are beautiful in May.

The temperature in June is still hot. Try to arrange outdoor visits as early as possible.

The monsoon rain begins to fall in June, but usually not very much.

June afternoons are more suitable for indoor tours, like at India National Museum and Sulabh International Museum of Toilets.

August is the rainiest month in Delhi. Delhi's rainy season is characterized by short thunderstorms several times a day.

You will meet less crowding if you travel in the monsoon months as India's summer vacation ends earlier than many other northern hemisphere countries' (usually mid-April to mid-June). You will also find many promotions from hotels and airlines.

The rain eases up in September. Late September could be an ideal time to travel, when the rainy season is (mostly) over, the temperature starts to cool, and it's not yet crowded.

All three of Delhi's World Heritage sites are great places to visit, the Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, and Qutub Minar.

Delhi in October — Dry and Warm

• Average low–high temperature: 20–32°C (67–89°F)

The cool and dry weather in Delhi in October is suitable for visiting all kinds of attractions.

If you are interested in Indian religions culture, you can visit Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, and Lotus Temple. If you like Indian history, the Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb are good to visit. If you want to learn about Delhi's local life, Chandni Chowk Market or a home visit is a good idea.

Delhi in November — Nice Weather

• Average low–high temperature: 13–27°C (56–81°F)
• Key festival: Diwali (in late October or early November)

November is the peak season, not only because of the cool weather, but also due to India's most important festival — Diwali (Festival of Light). It is the best time to experience an Indian festival and learn about Indian culture. As many fireworks are set off during Diwali, hazy weather may occur in the days following Diwali.

Besides the festival events, any sightseeing is very pleasant in the mild/warm and dry weather: historical sites, local markets, food hunting, gardens, amusement parks, and more.

Delhi in December — Cool

• Average low–high temperature: 9–22°C (48–71°F)
• Key festivals: Christmas Day, New Year's Eve
