Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of the Maratha Imperial architecture used in India in the bygone era. It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas. However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.

And it is because of this that their memorials have been safeguarded in the palace grounds. The Aga Khan Palace is located in a huge ground, and has five, luxurious and spacious halls, along with several lawns. The structure resonates of Italian architecture, elegant yet intricate and magnificent.Of all the rooms and features of the palace, its arches are the most beautiful, almost mesmerising to the eyes. Most of these reflect Gandhi’s lifestyle, thereby offering visitors a deep insight into the Mahatma’s life. Moreover, it is because of this and Gandhi’s links to it that the palace is now also known as the Gandhi National Memorial Society. Lohagad Fort
Having done this trek many times, I would categories Lohagad fort as one of the easier Monsoon treks near Pune. It’s accessible and located around 75 km from Pune. It is connected by train also to the Malavali station. It’s a trek where you can even take younger kids with you. A few years back, there’s a road that was build halfway to the fort thus making it more accessible. The fort has some caves on top that can be explored.

Tikona Fort

The Tikona fort trek is another easy trek near Pune. Though Short, it’s a little steep and is a distinctive pyramid shape which can be spotted from far. If you are looking for a short getaway with family, Tikona fort is a good place to go. It had beautiful views of the Pawna lake and has a famous Mahadev temple on top.

Distance from Pune: 52 km
Distance from Mumbai: 121 km

Rajmachi Trek
Located close to Lonavala, the Rajmachi trail is a popular monsoon trek near Pune, a major reason for this is the dozens and dozens of beautiful waterfalls the trail has to offer during the monsoon season. However, a thing to note is that the trek is about 18 km’s long and is not recommended for beginners.
Elevation: 826 m

Raireshwar trek

More famous for the Historic Raireshwar temple on top, the Raishwar fort is located about 30 km’s from the popular Bhor village. The trail is short and shouldn’t take you more than 1.5 hrs or so to get to the top. Being a short trek with a historic temple on top, it’s a popular trek around Pune for families.

Distance from Pune: 81km
Distance from Mumbai: 227km

Raigad Fort
Photo By rohit gowaikar – originally posted to Flickr as Two Towers , CC BY-SA 2.0 , Link
Located about 125 km’s from Pune, Raigad is a popular fort amongst trekking enthusiasts as it used to be the Capital of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ji at one time. The trek is about 3-4 hours of climb and it has about 1500+ steps towards the end of the climb. Won’t recommend this trek for small children. Avoid this trek in summer as it gets hot, Monsoon and winter are the best months to do this.

Distance from Pune: 125km
Distance from Mumbai: 160 km
Trek Duration: 3-4 hours
Kalsubai Trek
The highest point in Maharashtra, this trek completely transforms itself in the rainy season, making it a popular monsoon trek near Pune and Mumbai, with Lush green forests, cloud cover, and waterfalls. It’s a different feeling of accomplishment for may trekkers to be able to reach the highest point in the state. It’s a little far from Pune and often difficult to do in one day, most trekkers leave the previous night or very early in the morning to return to Pune by late night the same day.
Elevation: 1646 m
Difficulty Level: Medium
Distance from Pune: 180 km
Distance from Mumbai: 155 km
Torna was my very first monsoon trek near Pune about 20 years back. Unlike most other treks, it has a unique wind tunnel that forms on the ridge. Located about 75 km’s from Pune, the base village is called Velhe. Very recently, the government has built a road up to the first ridge of Torna, reducing the trekking time to 2.5 hours as compared to the earlier 4 hours. It’s a beautiful trek and a must recommended trek for all trekking enthusiasts in Pune.
Elevation: 1405 m
Difficulty Level: Difficult
Distance from Pune: 75 km
Distance from Mumbai: 213 km
Trek Duration: 2.5 hours
Irshalgadh Fort
I first did the Irshalgadh trek in 2012. That time it wasn’t a very popular trek. However, in recent years, it has gained popularity because of the proximity to Mumbai and Pune. One can reach the base of the fort in 2 hours from Pune using the expressway. It has a unique pinnacle on the top and is also a twin fort to the famous Prabalgadh. It’s a fairly easy trek and recommended for children and families as well.
Elevation: 1128 m
Distance from Pune: 102 km
Distance from Mumbai: 55 km
Trek Duration: 2-3 hours
Visapur Fort Trek
The Visapur Fort is a twin fort to the Lohaghad fort. They have exactly the same approach almost until halfway. Once you reach the common halfway point, Visapur would be on your left, and Lohaghad will be on your right. It’s a popular monsoon trek near Pune as the final climb is through a waterfall and a lot of fun. The top is a huge plateau with a big area to walk around and explore.
Elevation: 1084 m
Distance from Pune: 70 km
Trek Duration: 2hours
Harishchandrgad Trek
Photo By rohit gowaikar – originally posted to Flickr as Kedareshwar , CC BY-SA 2.0 , Link
The Harishchandragad trek is undoubtedly one of the most popular treks in the Sahyadri range. This is primarily because of the famous Konkan Kada, which offers one of the best views of the Konkan. The trek is difficult and long and a lot of trekkers use to stay here overnight. However 2 years back, the government officials have put a restriction on overnight camping here, so one has to go up and come down the same day which is possible if you are a reasonably seasoned trekker. Won’t recommend this fort for beginners and children.
Elevation: 1424 m
Difficulty Level: Difficult
Distance from Pune: 96 km
Distance from Mumbai: 101 km
Trek Duration: 6 hours
Vasota Trek
Photo By Suwarna tandale – Own work , CC BY-SA 4.0 , Link
The Vasota Jungle trek is a unique trek as it’s the only trek where you have to take a 45-minute boat ride to reach the start point of the trekker making it quite popular. Its located in the Koyna wildlife sanctuary in Satara district and is very rich in its flora and fauna. It’s about 150 km’s from Pune and is often done as an overnight trek because of the travel time involved.
Elevation: 1300 m
Distance from Pune: 150 km
Distance from Mumbai: 260 km
Trek Duration: 1 Day
Andharban trek
Literally translating into the Dark Forest, Andharban Trek is a very popular trek around Pune. The trail is about 14 km long and most part of it is covered under dense forests. I would personally advise doing this trek just at the beginning of the monsoon, end of the monsoon, and in winter. Avoid the trek during peak monsoon as there are chances of landslides during that time.
Elevation: 658 m
Distance from Pune: 55 km
Distance from Mumbai: 145 km
Trek Duration: 5 hours
Sinhagad Trek
The Sinhagad trek is almost synonymous to Pune city. It’s the most accessible trek to Punekars and is frequented by thousands of trekkers every week. Located only about 25 km’s from Pune, it is definitely one of the must-do treks near Pune. It involves around 1.5 hours of trekking and Sinhagad trek can be done by all age groups.
Elevation: 760 m
Distance from Pune: 25 km
Distance from Mumbai: 180 km
Trek Duration: 1-2 hours
Rajgad Fort
The Rajgadh fort is located about 40 km’s from Pune thus making it a very popular Monsoon trek near Pune. The terrain is very similar to Torna fort and one can even trek from the top of Rajgahd fort to Torna fort. It’s a relatively easy trek and recommended for all age groups.
Elevation: 1376 m
Distance from Pune: 40 km
Distance from Mumbai: 200 km
Trek Duration: 3-4 hours
Rohida Fort Trek
Also called the Vichitragadh trek, Rohida fort is famous for the wind tunnels it creates on the trekking route. A unique thing about this trek is that it can be climbed from two sides. Its located near Bhor and is a fairly easy trek, recommended for children and families. I would definitely add this to the list of must-do monsoon treks near Pune.
Elevation: 1116 m
Distance from Pune: 62 km
Distance from Mumbai: 205 km
Trek Duration: 2 hours
Tips for Monsoon treks near Pune:
Trek with friends.
Do not trek alone in the monsoons. The trails are often slippery and you should always have friends or a group around you while trekking, especially in the monsoon.
Use good shoes
Avoid trekking in floaters and use shoes with a good grip. Trails are more slippery and shoes will protect from getting a twisted ankle or an injured toe.
Check the weather forecast
If very heavy rainfall is predicted the avoid going for a trek. Heavy monsoon sometimes can cause a landslide or can result in the closing of a trekking route, so always check the forecast and venture out.
Pack extra clothes
The monsoon around Pune is heavy and can drench you completely. We suggest carrying an extra change of clothes as travelling back home completely drenched and can make you fall sick.
Keep hydrating
The monsoon season is very pleasant, unlike summer, however, keep drinking water and keep yourself hydrated since your body is doing a lot of hard work, it would always need water, irrespective of the season.
Look out for each other and always keep safety the first priority, especially on monsoon treks. Keep to the main trails and don’t try new routes on the rainy season.

15 beautiful monsoon treks in Maharashtra: easy to challenging
By Jahnavi Bhatt
The monsoons in Maharashtra bring a bunch of adventures along with it. Lush green landscapes, sparkling waterfalls and a coolness in the air tempt everyone to step out of the concrete city and seek activities in the great outdoors. The best part is there’s something for everyone here. Take your pick: from easygoing strolls along low valleys to moderate-level climbs to hidden forts to adrenaline-pumping hikes up steep mountains .
Monsoon trek destinations in Maharashtra
Difficulty: easy, bhivpuri waterfalls, karjat.
Bhivpuri waterfalls, Karjat
Duration: 1 day; Highest Point: 115ft; Best time to visit : June to September\
Climb up the foothills of the Bhivpuri village, past meandering streams and grazing animals to reach this picturesque waterfall surrounded by emerald slopes. The route up is fairly simple, making it suitable for family treks. Once you’re at the top, soak in the natural beauty of Bhivpuri while listening to the gushing waterfall or snacking at the nearby food shacks. Walk or rappel down and reward yourself with a dip in the cascading waters. You could also visit nearby sights like the Bhivpuri Dam and hydroelectricity plant, and a Sai Baba temple.
Duke’s Nose, Khandala
Duke's Nose, Khandala
Duration: 2-4 hours; Highest point: 3,200ft; Best time to visit: July to September
Bearing resemblance to the Duke of Wellington’s sharp nose, this popular trek destination has a steep cliff with a flat top that makes for a beautiful vantage point. Each trekker has two routes to get to the top. A smaller route beginning at Khandala station and another from Kurvande village, which is around four hours long. No matter which road you take, you are guaranteed panoramic views of Khandala and the Sahyadri peaks. While you take in the misty hills , you could add a little more thrill to the adventure by rappelling and rock climbing down. In October, you can take part in the slacklining festival too.
Karnala Fort, Raigad
Duration: 1 day; Highest point: 1,500ft; Best time to visit: June to April
If you’re looking to rejuvenate amidst nature steeped in history, the Karnala fort is the place to go. You will be greeted by songbirds like the paradise flycatcher and magpie robin, as you enter the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Take your pick from the well-defined, motorable trail and the rocky track encircling the sanctuary while climbing uphill. Both paths converge at the base of the 14-century fort. Make sure to visit the Pandu Tower at the centre of the higher level of the fort. This 125ft basalt tower, shaped like a thumb, was once the watchtower of the fort.
Devkund Waterfall, Bhira Village
Devkund waterfall, Bhira village
Shikha Tripathi
Arundhati Ail
Duration: 1 day; Highest point: 2,700ft; Best time to visit: August to November
Deep within the forests surrounding the Bhira Dam, the Devkund Waterfall tumbles from a height of 80ft. The trail starts along the banks of the dam and advances into the dense forests and rocky paths with a short climb. If the climb tires you out, you could refuel at the tea and food stalls along the path. You can also swim in a small section of the pond below the falls. But be careful, as certain sections of the pond go 60ft deep. You could even pitch a tent and go camping close by.
Peb Fort, Matheran
Duration: 1 day; Highest point: 2,050ft; Best time to visit: July to September
Located next to Matheran, Peb or Vikatgad Fort is a lesser-known trekking destination, ideal for those looking for a quiet getaway. A trekking delight for beginners, the trail follows a straightforward route with monkeys to guide the way. The cave on the fort provides panoramic views of the Matheran range. You can also discover the hills at night while you camp out in the caves.
Difficulty: Medium
Takmak Fort, Palghar
Takamak fort, Palghar
Duration: 1 day; Highest point: 2,000ft; Best time to visit: June to September
From vibrant rice paddy fields to meadows of starflowers in full bloom, you can find a piece of natural beauty every step of the way to the 12-century fort during the monsoon. Broken pieces of the Takmak Fort provide tidbits of history along the path too. But make sure to make your expedition with a guide as the windy trails make people lose their way. This trek would require some training beforehand, as the ridges at the end are narrow with loose boulders that can be challenging to climb.
Kalsubai Peak, Igatpuri
Kalsubai peak, Igatpuri
Duration: 6 hours; Highest point: 5,400ft; Best time to visit: June to August
The highest peak in Maharashtra, Kalsubai is perhaps the most famous trekking spot in the state. The adventure to the summit hidden in clouds is divided into two sections. The first section through the farmlands is quite laid back with the exception of a few rocky patches. The second section consists of a steep ascent, facilitated by steel railings and ladders. The peak introduces you to a new vista at every turn. Many pitch a tent at the top of the hill to gaze at the stars overnight and catch the sunrise at dawn.
Ratangad Fort, Ahmednagar
Duration: 1 day; Highest point: 4,255ft; Best time to visit: June to September/October to December
If you’re craving more adventure after scaling up Kalsubai, you could venture to the jewel of the Sahyadris, Ratangad. A fort on the Kalsubai ranges, at the bank of the Bhandardara river, Ratangad is nearly 400 years old with two caves, four gates and a natural rock peak called ‘Eye of the Needle’ for visitors to explore. The trail is mostly flat with slight ascents and occasional narrow spurs. The flowers surrounding the fort are a sight for sore eyes.
Prabalgad, Panvel
Duration: 4 hours; Highest point: 2,300ft; Best time to visit: June to September/October to December
Scaling up the rough and bumpy hill of Prabalgad can be relaxing; however, the rains make the rock-cut steps quite slippery. Crowding on the narrow steps poses a challenge as well, making it more suitable for experienced trekkers in the monsoons. The plateau inhabits a large number of lizards, snakes and various species of birds and boasts a bird’s eye view of Matheran.
Sudhagad Fort, Pali
Sudhagad Fort, Pali
Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 5,175ft; Best time to visit: June to September
Trekking up this secluded hill fort would make for a memorable getaway for beginners and amateur hikers alike. Start your way upwards on the well-defined tar roads that lead to a stone walkway. As soon as the walkway ends, you reach a temple with a tall tower in its courtyard. What pulls most people on this trek is the main gate or the Mahadarwaja, and the lakes nearby.
Difficulty: Hard
Torna Fort, Pune
Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 4,603ft; Best time to visit: August to February
Look forward to crossing many streams and ridges on the exhilarating and demanding trek to Torna Fort. As you exert yourselves on the upward path, vast meadows of bright, yellow flowers offer some respite. The Torna Fort, originally known as Prachandagad, has a rich history attached to it as well. It was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 16. Make sure to reach the top early so you get enough time to soak in views of the surrounding forts and dams. The rules suggest you leave by 5 pm. On your way back, you can treat yourself to lip-smacking Maharashtrian food at the Velhe Village at the base.
Salher Fort, Nashik
Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 5,140ft; Best time to visit: August to February
The most celebrated forts of the Maratha Empire and the second-highest peak in Maharashtra, the pyramid-shaped Salher fort can be scaled from one of three villages— Waghambe, Salher or Maldar. Similar to Prabalgad, the trails are slippery and the carved steps are tricky to climb but the trek makes for a memorable adventure. The Salher even has a twin fort right across called the Salota Fort. The two are separated by a saddle (the low point between two peaks). The highest point of the summit has a Parshuram temple.
Harishchandragad, Ahmednagar
Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 1,424ft; Best time to visit: August to February
Out of the many routes up Harishchandragad, the Khireshwar route or Pachnai is the safest in the monsoons. Walk across the paddy fields and Pimpalgaon Joga Dam, past the small caves to reach the top of the fort where you can enjoy a nice meal and watch the sun disappear behind two valleys. Visibility could be an issue closer to the top but the metal railings and ladders ensure your safety. Don’t forget to take pictures from the Konkan Kada (cliff), where you can sometimes see a circular rainbow.
Jivdhan Fort, Pune
Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 3,757ft; Best time to visit: August to February
Perched near the town of Ghatghar in Pune, the hill fortress of Jivdhan has challenged trekkers in more ways than one. When you embark on this trail, you would need to have a guide to navigate through the jungle. You also need appropriate climbing equipment to make the steep climb to the pinnacle. Less experienced climbers would have to make their way to the Kalyan gate to use the carved rock steps with hooks attached to the walls to assist the climb. The fort comprises unexplored storage units, water tanks and cisterns, and offers compelling views of Harishchandragad, Chavaand, Ratangad, Naneghat forts.
Harihar Fort, Nashik
Duration: 2 days; Highest point: 3,676ft; Best time to visit: June to August
The Harihar Fort is built in an extremely unique location which contributes to its challenge. It’s built on a triangular prism rock with a vertical inclination of 90°. In order to reach the fort, you are required to ascend 117 stairs, walk below an overhang with a sheer drop and climb up another narrow staircase. At the entrance, you will see the plateau with a small raised level. The plateau includes small idols of Lords Hanuman, Shiva and Nandi and a quaint pond. Getting to the higher level, we come across a two-room palace that can accommodate approximately 12 people. This palace may not be in its best form but the 360° view of the Sahyadri range peaks makes up for it. Don’t forget to also visit the ‘Scottish Kada’, one of the vertical drops, named after Doug Scott, the mountaineer who first climbed it.
