Several of the biggest soccer teams in the world will take the pitch in the New York metropolitan area this summer.

MetLife Stadium and Yankee Stadium will play host to two of the six matches that will be part of the 2024 Soccer Champions Tour, The Post has learned, which takes place from July 27 to Aug. 6 and involves European heavyweights Real Madrid, AC Milan, FC Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea.

The two matches in the New York area pit Man City against AC Milan at Yankee Stadium on July 27 and Real Madrid against FC Barcelona at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 3.

“Soccer Champions Tour is thrilled to return this summer with enticing matchups featuring some of the world’s most storied clubs for fans in the U.S. to witness the beautiful game at the highest level,” Commissioner of Soccer Champions Tour Joe Carr said in a statement. “With all five clubs possessing passionate supporters that span the globe, we’re pleased to unveil an exciting range of matches throughout the U.S., a market experiencing exponential growth in the sport’s popularity.”

Erling Braut Haaland scores Manchester City's third goal against Manchester United at Etihad Stadium in Premier League match.

Matches will also take place in Orlando (Barcelona-Manchester City), Chicago (AC Milan-Real Madrid), Baltimore (Barcelona-AC Milan) and Charlotte (Real Madrid-Chelsea) as part of the Soccer Champions Tour.

New York has long been a summer stop for touring international clubs, but carries some extra significance as the metropolitan area gears up to host the World Cup final in 2026.

MetLife Stadium was selected by FIFA last month to host the coveted game, beating out AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, among other potential sites.

With the World Cup coming to North America in two short years’ time, the profile of the sport is growing, and friendlies featuring some of the biggest teams in soccer can only help generate more interest.

Christian Pulisic smiles, wearing AC Milan's red jersey, after scoring the goal in their 1-0 victory against Sassuolo in the Italy Soccer Serie A.

AC Milan boasts US men’s national team star Christian Pulisic on the roster.

Pulisic has been red-hot in his debut season with the Serie A club. He has 12 goals this season for AC Milan and has scored in four straight games recently.

It’s also fitting that AC Milan and Man City will make a stop at Yankee Stadium with both clubs having ties to the Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers own a minority stake in AC Milan and they partnered with City Football Group – owners of Man City – in establishing MLS’ New York City Football Club, which plays part of its home schedule at Yankee Stadium.

English footballer Jude Bellingham waves in a white uniform during Real Madrid CF versus RB Leipzig match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.

Manchester City faced Chelsea in The Bronx in 2013, days after MLS announced NYCFC would join the league as its 20th franchise.

Real Madrid, already boasting a lineup led by midfielder Jude Bellingham, is expected to add superstar forward Kylian Mbappé in a marquee move this summer.

The August match will be Real Madrid’s third time playing at MetLife Stadium and FC Barcelona’s second time playing at the home of the Jets and Giants.

Barcelona last played in the area in 2022, when the Spanish giants faced the New York Red Bulls in a friendly at Red Bull Arena.

Pre-sale tickets for all matches will be available on March 25, and general tickets go on sale March 27 via the Soccer Champions Tour website .

Which European soccer teams are touring the USA in summer 2022?

kyle fansler

by Kyle Fansler June 10, 2022

european soccer team us tour

With the COVID-19 pandemic subsiding, European soccer teams are touring the USA for offseason training again in bulk.

Last year, a handful of European clubs made the trip over to the United States. Notably, Everton won the Florida Cup against Colombian side Millionarios. Still, the majority of the major European clubs held off with limited capacity at stadiums still in effect.

This summer, look forward to seeing some of Europe’s biggest clubs in action stateside.

Most of the following teams play three games during their tenure in the country. Oftentimes, this is just a stop on the club’s international tour. For example, Barcelona has two confirmed games while in the U.S. this summer. However, the club’s offseason tour already started against Australia’s A-League All Stars.

While the players do get some time off before the trip to the United States, Barcelona then plays two games in the United States. Plus, there is potential for a third one.

See the stars in person

Also, not every club confirmed its summer plans quite yet. Real Madrid, for example, has a history of playing in the U.S. over the summer. However, with the club set for the UEFA Champions League Final, the season is still very much at hand. On the other hand, Liverpool, Real’s opponent in the Final, announced its offseason plans in February. The Reds, like a number of other clubs, will be in Asia. Specifically, Jurgen Klopp’s side has games set for Thailand and Singapore .

European soccer teams touring the USA

Back to the U.S., three of England’s ‘big six’ teams will appear throughout the United States. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City each have a slate of games.

The highlight of this is the 2022 Florida Cup between Chelsea and Arsenal on July 23 . This one-off competition traditionally has a handful of teams from South America and Europe. As part of the FC Series, this is just a singular game. However, both clubs do have additional games.

On July 16, Chelsea plays Mexican side Club América at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Then, the club arrives in Charlotte to play MLS club Charlotte FC .

That game, scheduled for Wednesday, July 20, is part of a busy day for summer friendlies. Five European clubs play five clubs from North America across the United States. Eventually, Chelsea finishes up its America tour in that Arsenal game.

Like Chelsea, Arsenal plays three games during its time in the United States. Arsenal opens up its time in the U.S. against fellow Premier League foe Everton in Baltimore on July 16. Then, on that day of Europe vs. North America, Arsenal takes on Orlando City at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

The Chelsea-Arsenal clash is the Gunners’ last game before heading back to England to continue preparations for what could be a big season for the North London club.

Everton was one of the few clubs to play international friendlies last summer. It returns to the United States starting with the aforementioned game against Arsenal. The Toffees then partake in that busy July 20 set of games when it plays against Minnesota United .

Everton has the honor of being Minnesota United’s first friendly against Premier League opposition. Everton did well in the preseason last summer, but struggled mightily in the league, barely staying up.

  • Manchester City

The defending Premier League champions have just two games over a four-day span in the United States. Like Chelsea, the Sky Blues take on Liga MX side Club América. This game is at NRG Stadium, the traditional home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.

Manchester City’s second game, however, is the best confirmed game in the United States. Plus, it is at one of sports’ most vaunted and historical venues. Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers for the last 65 years, hosts its first soccer game on July 23. Manchester City plays Bayern Munich , which now has 10-consecutive Bundesliga titles. These two sides last met in 2018 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with Pep Guardiola besting his old club 3-2. Bernardo Silva scored twice that day for City.

  • Bayern Munich

Among the European soccer teams touring the USA, Bayern Munich has the most success when it comes to the UEFA Champions League. The German side visited the U.S. in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019. The two games for the club go from Washington D.C. to Green Bay, WI.

On July 20, Bayern plays its first game against an MLS side when it battles DC United at Audi Field . The German car manufacturer has a stake in both DC United and Bayern Munich, making this a first Audi Football Summit. As seen previously, Bayern then rounds out its trip to the U.S. against Manchester City at Lambeau Field .

Another European giant, Barcelona has a knack for playing in the United States. The Catalans were part of the biggest summer friendly in U.S. history when they played in  El Clásico  in Miami in 2017.

As stated previously, Barcelona’s summer activities started before the European season even wrapped up. However the main bulk comes in the form of two games stateside. FCB has two games against MLS opposition in the form of Inter Miami and New York Red Bulls .

While unconfirmed, there are reports that a second  El Clásico  in the United States is in the works for the summer of 2022. Early reports indicate that the game will be at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the same site as the contest between Chelsea and Club América. Real Madrid is yet to release information on its summer tour, but that likely comes out in early June.

Rumors on Real

While nothing is confirmed regarding  Los Blancos , there are indications of where the club’s summer tour may lead. Past rumors included a miniature tournament against Juventus and Barcelona, the three clubs still somewhat connected to the European Super League. It appears Real Madrid will be making another trip out to the U.S., but more information will arrive in the coming days.

German second division club SC Paderborn also plays one match this June in Minnesota.

Other clubs could join, but the ones above are the only European clubs with confirmed dates in the United States.

“AEG is excited about the partnership with Soccer Champions Tour and Legends to bring the most successful soccer clubs in the world to fans across the U.S.,” said Tom Braun, the senior vice-president for soccer and business operations at AEG. Braun oversaw a five-game tour July that drew more than 93,000 fans to the Rose Bowl to see Real Madrid beat Juventus.

That was the largest crowd for a soccer match in the U.S. since July 2018.

Alex Waxman, co-founder and CEO of Sixth Street, said the company has plans to expand the tour to include women’s teams.

“While this year’s tour consists of men’s clubs, we look forward to expanding next summer to bring the world’s best women’s clubs to local audiences around the globe and to evolve this series into a format with real games of consequence.”

Presale tickets for the tour will go on sale on May 16 at SoccerChampionsTour.com with general on-sale access beginning on May 19 at the same website.

European clubs visit USA for friendly-filled summer

June 20, 2023

Alejandro Canelón

Soccer never stops. Welcome to another busy summer of soccer in America!

It’s one of our favorite traditions, one that we really love. Nearly every year, different American cities will welcome some of the best soccer teams in the world. From Real Madrid facing Barcelona in another big edition of El Clásico (we see you, Texas!) to Manchester United — one of the most popular Premier League clubs in the U.S. — clashing against Borussia Dortmund in America’s new favorite sports destination: Las Vegas.

Whether you are a hardcore fan or you just want to enjoy some of the best soccer players in the world, you won’t want to miss the more than 20 matches across the country.

Everything kicks off on July 19 when the MLS All-Stars hosts Arsenal in D.C.’s state-of-the-art Audi Field. After a spectacular season that saw them fall to Manchester City in the last few weeks of the Premier League, the Gunners will hit the ninth-largest TV market in the United States and an area with some serious soccer passion — tickets sold out in less than five hours after being available to the general public!

On that same day, Sunderland — a historic English team that many will remember from Netflix’s breathtaking docuseries Sunderland ‘Til I Die — will play their second match on American soil when they face the second USL rival of their 2023 U.S. tour: New Mexico United at Albuquerque’s Isotopes Park. The Black Cats, who were captained by American international Lynden Gooch in the Championship playoff games against Luton Town, will play their opening match on July 15 against San Antonio FC at Toyota Field. Their last stop will be in Cary, NC where they face North Carolina FC.

Chelsea’s tour also kicks off on July 19 and also in North Carolina, a market where soccer has experienced an explosive rise in popularity in recent years. In 2022, Charlotte FC not only set a new MLS single-game attendance record in its home debut with 74,479 fans, they also had the second-highest attendance in the league.

Chapel Hill — just a 30 minute drive from Cary — will host the Blues when they face Welsh club and American TV sweethearts, Wrexham AFC. Even though Christian Pulisic has been linked with many different clubs in the last few weeks, many still expect to see him in America, especially when Chelsea visits Philadelphia — in Pulisic’s home state — to play Brighton on July 22, as part of the Premier League Summer Series , a five city tour hitting Atlanta, D.C., New York, Orlando, and Philadelphia. The Premier League’s first summer tour on U.S. soil will feature six PL clubs and some of the leagues best players. In addition to Chelsea and Brighton, Aston Villa (hola World Cup champion, “Dibu” Martínez!), Brentford, Fulham (with USMNT duo Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream), and Newcastle – will hit the East Coast in late July.

July 22 is certainly a date to keep in mind since it will be a day of top-class soccer in America, from coast to coast. Just 100 miles away from Lincoln Financial Field, Manchester United and Arsenal will meet for the first time in the United States at Metlife Stadium, a venue that has hosted pretty big soccer matches in the last few years, including a Madrid Derby in which Atlético Madrid thrashed Real Madrid 7-3.

Twelve years have passed since the last time Manchester United visited New York/New Jersey, America’s leading TV market. This match will mark the start of their two-week U.S. tour where they will also face Wrexham in San Diego (July 25, sold out), Spanish giants Real Madrid in Houston (July 26) and Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas (July 30), “bringing the most famous football club on the planet to the entertainment capital of the world.”

In just the last few years, Las Vegas has become one of the most coveted sports destinations. For evidence, look no further than the NHL, WNBA, NFL, and a potential MLB franchise with the Athletics leaving Oakland (not to mention that the city will host its first Super Bowl next year and the Final Four in 2028). Now it’s time for fans to enjoy top-class soccer on the Strip when United takes on Gio Reyna’s Borussia Dortmund.

But going back to July 22 (don’t forget to mark your calendars!), on the west coast, the Bay Area will welcome two clubs with huge American fan bases in Barcelona and Juventus. The two historic sides will meet at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara as part of the Soccer Champions Tour , a competition in which six teams will play eight matches in 10 days. That’s how we like our soccer served!

As part of this tour, Real Madrid and Barcelona will play another edition of El Clásico in the U.S. This will be the third time that Blancos and Culés meet on American soil, having already faced off in Miami in 2017 and in Las Vegas in 2022. This time, the old rivals will clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and the 80,000 capacity venue is expected to be sold out, even though it has been considered by many the most expensive soccer game in history with an average price tag of $504.

The action continues in August when Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund visit Chicago to play in a fan-favorite stadium: Soldier Field. Yes, Pulisic and Gio can meet one more time in America and in such an iconic venue. Fingers crossed.

Last but not least, LaLiga will have a double-header at beautiful Oracle Park in San Francisco, California. Atlético Madrid will face Sevilla and Real Sociedad will take on Real Betis on August 5th.

There’s also quite a few games that haven’t been listed here but that will definitely create a scheduling squeeze for us fans of the beautiful game in the U.S.

But that’s a good problem to have, right? Let the games begin!

Competitive European club matches in the U.S. ‘not a matter of if, but when’

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 23: Aston Villa and Newcastle United pose prior to a Premier League Summer Series match between Aston Villa and Newcastle United at Lincoln Financial Field on July 23, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images)

Wrexham’s players had no idea what to expect when they rolled into North Carolina for the first leg of their American tour, according to midfielder Elliot Lee.

So when he and his team-mates took to the field in front of a crowd of 50,596 people at Kenan Memorial Stadium in the University town of Chapel Hill, it opened his eyes to how big the club has become in the United States. For Ben Foster, who played for three Premier League clubs, the excitement from Wrexham supporters stateside is only comparable to what he experienced with Manchester United.

But not every club can be Manchester United — nor Arsenal or Chelsea, who have joined United in touring the United States this summer. In Fulham’s case, for example, tiers of empty seats at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field for their match against Brighton and Hove Albion point to a perceived oversaturation of English clubs on tour in the States this summer.

Despite the massive crowd for their opener against Chelsea, the remainder of Wrexham’s tour has not reached the same heights. For their 4-0 win over reserve side LA Galaxy II, the announced attendance was 10,553, but it looked like far less were there. Even at the recorded figure, the fixture failed to reach half of the Dignity Health Sports Park’s 27,000-seater capacity.

Ten years ago, the Galaxy’s first team may have paused their season to welcome Wrexham’s significant following, but with the demands of the now 29-team regular season, the U.S. Open Cup, the CONCACAF Champions League and Leagues Cup, a mid-season tournament involving every club in MLS and Liga MX, it is no longer a viable option. The attendance is approximately the same as what Wrexham will expect to welcome at a sellout Racecourse Ground in League Two next year, but the strategy of facing an MLS reserve club in Los Angeles did not prove nearly as fruitful as fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester United.

So should things carry on as is or are U.S fans getting bored of paying sometimes up to $300 for non-competitive games? And will that realistically ever change?

Like United, Chelsea are no strangers to the American audience. Over the past two decades, they have frequently swapped west London for the U.S. west coast, with Beverly Hills a favoured landing spot for former manager Jose Mourinho.

A year after Manchester United broke the mould and toured the United States in 2003 , Mourinho brought Chelsea to play in the ChampionsWorld Series alongside United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, A.C Milan, Roma, Celtic, Galatasaray and Porto, with whom Mourinho had lifted the Champions League trophy a month earlier.

European giants have traveled across the Atlantic to face off in front of an American crowd in pre-season exhibition tournaments as far back as the International Soccer League formed in 1960, but the ChampionsWorld Series was the watershed moment in paving the way for clubs opting for the United States as a primary destination for their pre-season tours.

Why? Many European clubs believe football in the United States has barely scratched the surface of its economic potential.

“The U.S. is the biggest sport market in the world. Soccer is rapidly growing, and so this is a really important market for us,” says Giorgio Furlani, AC Milan’s chief executive. “It’s top three in terms of international markets for us in terms of fan base. We have 16 fan clubs in North America: 13 (across the) the USA and two in California.

“We hope to welcome a lot of our fans from these clubs, other clubs and just from the country (across the tour). The U.S. is also important and strategic for us. We are American-owned; Redbird Capital owns AC Milan. They operate sort of at the core of the intersection of sports media: entertainment and culture. Los Angeles is a capital of all of these things.”

When Chelsea visited the States in 2004, they closed their tour by playing Milan at Lincoln Financial Field in front of 39,123 fans. At that time, Chelsea and Milan were among Europe’s top five clubs, and only filled a bit more than half the stadium.

For the fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion on July 23, the same ground welcomed 65,128 supporters, just short of Lincoln Financial Field’s 71,000 capacity. That Chelsea, who finished 12th in the Premier League last campaign and Brighton, who will be playing European football for the first time in their history next season, can attract such a crowd illustrates how their brand has grown significantly in the U.S. since 2004.

Since the ChampionsWorld Series, European clubs travelling to the United States has become ingrained in the football calendar. This year, Barcelona, Arsenal, Juventus and Real Madrid have joined Milan and Chelsea in California for the Soccer Champions Tour, the latest in a line of U.S.-based pre-season friendly tournaments.

“All the Real Madrid fans here have been waiting for this,” says Velma, speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over AC Milan at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California. “It’s fine (that it’s a friendly match); any time you have the opportunity to watch Real Madrid is a big, big, big event for the fans.”

For now, it is just friendly matches on the horizon for Premier League clubs, but La Liga is more optimistic.

“It’s not a matter of if, but when,” Boris Gartner, chief executive of La Liga North America, tells The Athletic. “As the sport continues to grow in this country, and fans get more sophisticated, and they’re used to watching competitive games, they’ll know that players play differently when they’re fighting for three points than when they’re not.

“It’s the right next evolution, and it’s not something that La Liga came up with out of the blue. There was the 39th Premier League game idea a while back, and NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL have all done it incredibly successfully. It’s the natural evolution of a global sport (…) it’s a win-win for the league, the club it’s exporting and for the local market.”

But for a Premier League game to be played in the United States, a mountain of hurdles would have to be cleared. When Relevent Sports Group attempted to facilitate the staging of a La Liga match in the U.S. back in 2018, FIFA created a new policy to prevent such a move and U.S. Soccer refused to sanction the game based on that policy. This prompted a legal battle that is still ongoing.

For one U.S. soccer executive, speaking to The Athletic on the condition of anonymity such is the delicacy of the subject, the Premier League’s decision-makers are “still gun shy from the fallout of the Super League ,” fearing the prospect of having games played on foreign soil will not be well-received by supporters. First, one club would have to agree to forfeit a home match or face having both legs played in the States. But with no dedicated venue for the Champions League final, the potential to play the biggest match in club football outside of Europe may be more achievable.

In April, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said it is “possible” that Champions League fixtures could be staged in the United States from 2026 onwards.

How might it work? Well, one thought is to potentially move a group-stage game or two to a major market in the United States. Another idea presented by Ceferin is to stage two single-leg semi-finals and a final into a Champions League “final four” week.

The genesis of this idea originated in 2020 when UEFA faced the challenge of compressing the finals of their two club competitions, the Champions League and Europa League, into a narrow window in August. Both tournaments had reached the quarter-final stage, with just a few last-16 games remaining, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down in March.

To ensure a smooth start to the 2020-21 season, UEFA abandoned the traditional home/away format for the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Instead, they opted to conclude the Champions League over 12 days in Portugal and the Europa League over the same timeframe in Germany.

A final four week in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, or any U.S. city that could do the event justice would come with ticketed events, hospitality opportunities, and new audiences that will make the top brass at UEFA lick their lips.

Still, there is the potential wrinkle that introducing Champions League games in the States could face domestic opposition. Critics would express concerns that European soccer’s presence could deplete the sporting market, diverting funds from broadcast, sponsorship, and ticket revenue from U.S. pro leagues. CONCACAF who have their own Champions League based in the region , would likely protest, in addition to the aforementioned actions taken by FIFA and U.S. Soccer in that La Liga case.

However, proponents may argue that this would simply follow market economics, allowing the most popular products to thrive. A solution might emerge if UEFA agreed to reinvest a substantial portion of the income generated from games on U.S. soil into American grassroots soccer, thereby enhancing player development and facilities. Not to mention they’d likely have to split funds with CONCACAF as CONMEBOL is doing in order to host the 2024 Copa America in the States.

Wait too long, and Saudi Arabia will inevitably cough up more money than Ceferin can refuse.

While many American fans hope to see European clubs play competitively on U.S. soil, with Phil Murphy, governor of New Jersey, telling media, “(America) would die to have a real competitive game”, the sentiment that having an opportunity to watch some of the biggest clubs in the world, regardless of whether it was a friendly game, was echoed by several fans The Athletic interviewed across the States.

“Listen, I’d love nothing more than an EPL game to be here, but I also know it’s England’s league,” says Brad Shipp, a Premier League fan from Texas. “I think it would be borderline tragic to take a home game away from Luton Town or another team with local, working-class fans.

“My son is 18 and plays soccer. Last season we went to England for three games – Man U vs. Spurs, Arsenal vs. Liverpool, and City vs. Palace. I was in the away end at City, and that’s when I realised how this meant everything to fans in England. The segregation (of opposing fans) isn’t something we have here, so to see that up close was when I realised what taking a game away from them would mean.”

On the other hand, American sports leagues have taken official games worldwide for decades. This year, the NFL is hosting five games across the United Kingdom and Germany, one more than in 2022. Dating back to 1990, the NBA has staged 36 regular season games in Japan, Mexico, England and France. They announced a return to Paris set for January. Major League Baseball has established annual trips to London and Mexico City and will add Seoul, South Korea next year. The NHL will bring four games to Stockholm, Sweden, in November. For these fixtures, there is rarely an empty seat in the house.

So far, the best attendances of the U.S. pre-season tours have come from games organised by the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), the world’s largest owner of sports teams and events. AEG arranged the Soccer Champions Tour and Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Arsenal at MetLife Stadium, where the 82,262 attendance for that game set the record for the biggest attendance for a soccer match at MetLife. It was also the highest-grossing club soccer match at the stadium, second only to the 2016 Copa America final.

Naturally, fans want to see the best players available. For AEG, that means seeking assurances from clubs regarding the quality of players travelling to help ensure supporters who purchase tickets do not leave feeling short-changed.

“The way that we’ve built the relationship and the structure with these teams, there’s an understanding that the real players will play,” says Tom Braun, senior vice president of soccer & business operations and business development for the LA Galaxy, and the lead organiser of the Soccer Champions Tour. “I think a major differentiator in perhaps what fans are seeing now is that they’ll see these teams bring their big players. They bring their stars to these games. That’s what we demonstrated last year with the five matches that we did. These teams were not short on who came to play.”

From that perspective, so far, so good: fitness permitting, star players have played significant minutes across the tour. Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid’s star summer signing, started against Milan in Sunday’s fixture at the Rose Bowl and played alongside Vini Jr. in the second half.

U.S.-based Arsenal supporters have seen new signings Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber on the pitch together, and 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo’s performances for Manchester United alongside Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have fans around the world discussing whether he should play a role in the first-team this campaign.

Christian Pulisic, who departed Chelsea for Milan this summer, is arguably the biggest draw for American fans. As one of the USMNT’s star players, he’s been the face of Milan’s social campaigns during the tour, and 70,814 fans were in attendance — many of them wearing his shirt — to watch his first game for Milan on American soil. But when the talent on display has been less eye-catching, the attendance for English clubs has typically suffered.

For Fulham’s match against Brentford in the Premier League Summer Series, for example, tiers of empty seats at Lincoln Financial Field point to a perceived oversaturation of English clubs on tour in the States this summer. The official attendance given for matchday two of the Premier League event was 40,232, including Newcastle’s draw with Aston Villa, which was played shortly after at the same stadium in Philadelphia.

Even Borussia Dortmund, who kicked off their pre-season with a convincing win over USL Championship side San Diego Loyal, could only draw 12,207 supporters, a fraction of Snapdragon Stadium’s capacity.

For context, Dortmund, Villa and Newcastle, who will all play in European competition, will likely sell out every home league game this season.

One reason why many clubs are not drawing huge crowds is cost. For every Lucy, a Real Madrid supporter from Riverside, California, who considered $500 each for her and her family to attend their match at the Rose Bowl a “fair price”, there’s a Devin Walker, communications manager for Manchester United’s U.S. supporters’ clubs, who believes fans, particularly of Europe’s biggest clubs, are being “overcharged” to watch friendlies.

“The prices are way too expensive here, not only from the organisers but the ticket vendors,” says Walker. “It’s ridiculous that it cost people $600 to go to Manchester United’s last game against Arsenal at MetLife Stadium when tickets in Manchester have cost me maybe $50-60 for a regular season match.”

As for the impact of a long-haul flight across the Atlantic and trips within the U.S., there has been significant opposition in preparing a club for a successful season on the pitch. Arsene Wenger pushed for Arsenal to resist the temptation for years, arguing a summer training in the altitude of the Alps would be far more helpful.

Alex Ferguson warned against it too, but it was largely disregarded as United saw the commercial opportunity. And with analysts estimating the tour will earn them between £15million and £20m in direct revenue, including appearance fees and shares of ticket and broadcast revenue, you can hardly blame them.

As American fans continue to turn out in record numbers to watch Europe’s big guns (and TV series darlings, the United States will remain a primary destination during pre-season. For the Premier League’s aspiring clubs, like Villa and Newcastle, the data indicates they may be better served looking elsewhere to grow their brand.

Sixth Street Launches New U.S. Soccer Tour With Top European Clubs

Investment firm Sixth Street is launching a new company to host annual U.S. competitions between European soccer’s biggest clubs.

The Soccer Champions Tour’s 2023 schedule features Real Madrid and Barcelona (clubs in which Sixth Street has invested), plus AC Milan , Juventus , Arsenal and Manchester United—all of which rank among the world’s 15 most valuable soccer teams. Legends, part of the Sixth Street portfolio, will serve as the tour’s commercial partner, monetizing the games via merchandise, premium hospitality and sponsorship sales; AEG will assist with technical operations and logistics.

The group is looking to capitalize on the growing global popularity of elite European soccer, particularly in the U.S., the world’s largest and most developed sports market. Over time, Soccer Champions Tour plans to expand to include women’s clubs and youth competitions.

“We are proud to be partnering with the world’s most storied clubs, which have the world’s strongest and most passionate supporters, to provide this rare opportunity for American fans to experience the game at the highest level,” Sixth Street co-founder and CEO Alan Waxman said in a statement.

The eight-game tour will open July 22, with Barcelona and Juventus playing at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. It will end on Aug . 2, when Juventus and Real Madrid face off in Orlando’s Camping World Stadium. Barcelona and Real Madrid will play on July 29 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The new company joins an increasingly crowded slate of summer tours for elite European clubs, which utilize the offseason from their domestic leagues to play in front of fans in key markets in both Asia and the Americas. While players and executives have criticized the packed calendar, American fans have rushed for tickets. Chelsea ’s July 19 game in North Carolina against Netflix darling Wrexham, for example, sold out in four days earlier this year.

This is just the latest push into soccer for Sixth Street, which invested into both Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2022. It also owns the new NWSL expansion franchise in the San Francisco Bay Area, leading a group that will spend $125 million over the next few years to get the team off the ground.

Legends was valued at $1.35 billion when Sixth Street bought its controlling stake in January 2021. The company’s original backers include the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees .

This Soccer Champions Tour is completely independent from the tour of the same name run in previous years by AEG.

Vegas, US tour and more signings: Wrexham has plenty of fun and work ahead after latest promotion

Wrexham and its Hollywood owners are halfway to the promised land.

Playing in the Premier League — the world’s richest and most popular soccer league — might not be such a fanciful notion, after all, for a club that not so long ago was success-starved, financially stricken and languishing in the fifth tier of the English game.

Under the ownership of celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney since 2021, Wrexham has achieved two successive promotions — the latest being clinched on Saturday when the team was assured of going up to third-tier League One.

Two more promotions and Wrexham will be mixing it with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League.

That, though, may take some time.

Before that, Wrexham's players have a league title to go for, some post-season celebrations to enjoy — Las Vegas, anyone? — and another U.S. preseason tour to make before starting their bid for a third straight promotion.

Here's what lies ahead for the Welsh team whose extraordinary journey is being chronicled in the popular show “Welcome to Wrexham”:

TITLE CHANCE?

Claiming one of the three automatic promotion spots in League Two was the first aim and that has been achieved with two games to spare. Now, Wrexham has a chance to win some hardware by finishing in first place and capturing the title. It won't be easy. Wrexham is in second place, four points behind Stockport, which has three games left. If Stockport isn't able to clinch first place by winning either of its next two matches, the title could be up for grabs when Wrexham hosts Stockport at the Racecourse Ground on the final day of the season. It's expected that Reynolds and McElhenney will be there for an occasion which will be a day of celebrations whatever happens.

POST-SEASON PARTY

The season hasn't finished yet but the promotion party has already begun . Wrexham's players were pictured — and filmed — enjoying themselves in a town-center pub on Sunday, a day after beating Forest Green 6-0 to spark a pitch invasion at the Racecourse Ground. Paul Mullin , the star striker and top scorer, was seen in the pub standing on a chair with his arms out and his eyes closed in front of his smiling teammates, who mixed with members of the public. After winning the fifth-tier National League last year, the squad was treated to a trip to Las Vegas by the owners — and the players might be headed to Sin City again. Asked what message was sent to Reynolds and McElhenney after sealing promotion, midfielder Elliot Lee said: “We’ve just told them to fire up the jet for Vegas!”

Wrexham has already booked in another preseason tour of the United States, just like last year. Only one match has been confirmed so far, and that's against Chelsea in Santa Clara, California, on July 24. Wrexham played Chelsea and Manchester United as part of a four-match preseason trip to the U.S. in July 2023 that contained fixtures in North Carolina, Los Angeles, San Diego and Philadelphia in a 10-day span. It might have helped Wrexham grow its fanbase but might not been ideal in terms of travel and season preparation. Wrexham may choose to stay in and around the west coast this time and ensure the squad is back home in plenty of time to prepare for the start of the League One season on Aug. 10.

LIFE IN LEAGUE ONE

So what awaits Wrexham's players in League One? For starters, they're likely to have home and away matches against Shrewsbury, one of their big local rivals. They haven't been in the same league since 2008, though Wrexham did beat Shrewsbury in the FA Cup this season. Wigan, a Premier League team and FA Cup winner barely a decade ago, is in the third tier, as might be Bolton and Blackpool — other teams who have been in the top flight this century. Wrexham is set to receive a cash boost of around $2 million from being in League One — more than half of which comes in the form of a “solidarity payment” handed down by Premier League clubs — that will help pay for some new signings. Deloitte has reported that the average League One team generates around $11 million in revenue but Wrexham is on course to top that, helped by its wider appeal likely making the team a popular watch on iFollow — the streaming service used by the English Football League. Indeed, Wrexham's latest accounts showed that its turnover in the financial year of 2022-23 was $13.3 million, even if its losses increased to $6.4 million. Meanwhile, Wrexham will look to push on with the renovation of its Kop stand at one end of the Racecourse to boost its capacity, and therefore its gate receipts. There is a temporary stand in place at the moment, helping to lift attendances for home matches to more than 15,000. U.S. Under-16 Women’s Youth National Team Dominates Botswana to Claim Berth in Championship Game of UEFA Friendship Tournament in Turkey

RIVA, Turkey (April 16, 2024) – The U.S. Under-16 Women’s National Team scored five goals in the first half and 10 in the second to rout Botswana, 15-0, in the first ever meeting between a U.S. Women’s National Team and the southern African nation.

The win gave the USA the full nine points in Group A play and earned the young Americans a spot in the championship game on April 18 against Group B winner Paraguay.

The USA opened the scoring in the 12 th minute with the first of forward Micayla Johnson’s three goals and then averaged a goal every five minutes the rest of the way. Forward Ashlyn Anderson also scored three times and forward Jordan Hill scored four of the USA’s last seven goals.

Midfielder Jaiden Rodriguez scored twice while forward Peyton Marinos, midfielder Charlee Siria and midfielder Reese Canada had one goal each.

The USA’s 25 goals were far and away the most in group play of any country in the eight-team tournament. Turkey scored the next most at 10 while Paraguay and China PR had nine each.

The USA defeated Turkey, 2-0, and Vietnam, 8-0, in its other Group A matches. Paraguay made its way to the final with a 7-0 win over Uganda, a 2-1 win over China PR and a 0-0 draw with Wales in which it got two points after winning the penalty kick shootout, 4-3.

Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2008, are age-eligible for this U-16 WYNT cycle. For this tournament, U.S. head coach Patchy Toledo selected all 2008-birth year players. All players in the U-16 WYNT pool are age-eligible for this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, set for October/November in the Dominican Republic.

Host Turkey will face China PR for third-place, Vietnam will take on Wales for fifth place and Botswana and Uganda will meet in an all-African seventh-place match. All the placement matches take place on April 18.

Bayern munich 1-0 arsenal: gunners exit champions league.

  • Nicholas Mendola ,

  • Joe Prince-Wright

The fine margins of the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds were too fine for Arsenal, who lost 1-0 in Germany on Wednesday to exit at the quarterfinal stage following a 3-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Joshua Kimmich’s second-half header was the only goal from a tight affair in Bavaria, as few Gunners found their footing on their biggest stage yet.

[ MORE: Arteta reacts to Arsenal’s UCL exit ]

Out-attempted 15-8 and producing just 0.43 xG, the Gunners ran out of gas in Germany.

Arsenal looked like a team that fell 2-0 at the weekend to see their Premier League title dreams moved to the backseat, and Bayern moves within 180 minutes of a Champions League Final in Arsenal’s backyard.

When the dust settles, Arsenal’s Champions League return will be viewed as a success

It’s stings now, especially rewatching the three Bayern goals from this tie, but Arsenal’s first Champions league run since 2016-17 should be viewed as an almost unqualified success.

This is especially true considering their ability to hang in the Premier League title race while navigating the return to the UCL, but still valid without counting the domestic slate.

The Gunners controlled Group B and made the Emirates Stadium a fortress, only conceding four times with two of those goals coming in an away loss at Lens.

The Round of 16 was a proper fight with hardened Porto, but winning a round will prove invaluable and nearly taking Bayern the distance will also stick with the young Gunners.

Frankly, they ran out of gas. Bukayo Saka was nearly invisible at the Allianz Arena and young teammate Gabriel Martinelli will have learned painful lessons on the decisive goal.

The collective experience and depth of Bayern’s midfield and back line is almost immeasurably greater than Bayern, and that was probably the difference in the tie.

Mikel Arteta has a lot of good things to remember, but won’t recall them now after back-to-back shutout losses to call time on dreams of a double... and maybe silverware altogether.

Arsenal, suddenly on a 194-minute goalless drought, head to Wolves for a 2:30pm ET Saturday kickoff in the Premier League, their last shot at a trophy this season.

Bayern munich vs arsenal final score: 1-0 (3-2 aggregate).

Goalscorers: Kimmich (63')

Odegaard denied

Martin Odegaard hammers a near-post shot that’s deflected by a defender and then Manuel Neuer.

Somehow not one ref saw one of the two touches.

89th minute and Bayern will sub to waste time here.

Arsenal subs

Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard enter in the 68th minute for Martinelli and Jorginho.

Bayern score! Bayern Munich 1-0 (3-2 aggregate) Arsenal (63rd minute)

Not a great sequence for Gabriel Martinelli.

He’s cooked by Leroy Sane on the right, with the ex-Man City man’s cross deflected onto the path of Raphael Guerreiro.

The fullback sends a cross back the other way, and Kimmich has blazed past Martinelli to head past David Raya.

Advantage, Arsenal.

Chess match

Not a lot going on here, but to prove we’re watching: Bayern have a 62nd-minute corner kick.

Kimmich wastes the corner kick wide of a far-post Olimpico that was likely unintentional.

Double chance out of the break

Bayern crack the cross bar from distance then the post on the rebound. The clock reads 46:05.

Instant energy.

Halftime — Bayern Munich 0-0 (2-2 aggregate) Arsenal

Ten total shots. Six for Arsenal including three on target.

Possession is 50/50. Anyone’s game in Munich.

Mikel Arteta will be happier than Thomas Tuchel.

Big recovery from Neuer

Martin Odegaard tries to catch Manuel Neuer out with a long attempt. Neuer scrambles back to paw it back from goal, eventually collecting it.

Bayern wide man Noussair Mazraoui crosses and it takes a slide turn off a sliding Ben White to bound out for a corner.

Slow so far

Only three shot attempts — none on target — as the game is almost exclusively between the 18s.

Early Bayern corner, er, Arsenal goal kick

Leroy Sane helps cue up a Harry Kane chance that is deflected out for a corner.

Ref doesn’t see it that way, and Arsenal let off.

Here we go!

Martin Odegaard leads the Gunners into a smoky Allianz Arena!

Bayern Munich lineup

Neuer, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Dier, Guerreiro, Kimmich, Laimer, Goretzka, Sane, Musiala, Kane

Arsenal lineup

Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu, Rice, Jorginho, Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli, Havertz

Bayern Munich focus, team news

Davies being out is a big blow as he was tasked with keeping Saka quiet last week. Raphael Guerreiro or Noussair Mazraoui will start at left back in Davies’ place. Gnabry and Coman both being injured is a blow too but Bayern still have Leroy Sane, Kane and Thomas Muller in attack who can cause plenty of problems.

OUT: Alphonso Davies (suspension), Serge Gnabry (hamstring), Kingsley Coman (thigh), Sacha Boey (hamstring), Bouna Sarr (knee)

Arsenal focus, team news

Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber is back in training and building up his fitness after the long-term knee injury he suffered in the opening game of the season. Captain Martin Odegaard suffered a knock against Villa and came off but he is expected to be fit to lead the Gunners at Bayern. Will Arteta go back to playing Havertz up top with Jesus and Saka on the wings and Jorginho adding some extra defensive solidity in midfield? It feels like that would be the smart play.

OUT: Jurrien Timber (knee) | QUESTIONABLE: Martin Odegaard (knock)

Lowcountry youth soccer teams gain firsthand European experience during spring break

by Scott Eisberg

Lowcountry youth soccer teams gain firsthand European experience during spring break. April 15, 2024 (WCIV)

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — There is nothing in Europe's sports scene that compares to football, or to us, soccer. Two Lowcountry teams now know that firsthand.

There is no better time to get better than Spring Break. School is out, soccer is in – superb conditions to condition.

"Tough two games," said Chloe Veloz, a player for Charleston Soccer Club's U13 squad. "Definitely have a couple of things we need to work on, but with enough training and time we can get to that level."

It's one thing to hear about soccer in England. It's another thing to see it. But to experience it, first-hand, that is what Charleston Soccer Club's U-13 team did over spring break.

From Manchester to London, they saw the Manchester United women. They played against Manchester United's Academy team. They got to see legendary clubs like Chelsea, Everton, West Ham and Tottenham.

"So cool," Veloz said of the experience. "They have a lot of footwork, so much speed, the passing is just amazing."

Mike Kelleher is a London native. He runs the Charleston Soccer Club.

"The girls played the ManU U-12 team," Kelleher said. "Women's football has come on so much in the last 20 years, they are now champions of Europe. Manchester United U12 team was the best girl's team I've ever seen. There were future England internationals on the team we played against. We played three periods. We won the second period. We lost a few goals in the third period."

The goal: to garner a new love, appreciation and expectation for how to play the European way.

But soccer is not only an "English" thing, Ask the boys from Charleston Soccer Club's U13 and U14 teams who returned from Italy.

Traveling from Venice to Milan, a trip much like the girls. They watched AC Milan vs. Lecce and Hellas Verona vs. Genoa. They played against San Giovanni Lupatolo, IFA Verona and Venezia FC Academy.

Peyton Owens plays for the team.

"Training with academy coaches and playing academy teams there was like a whole nother level I've never seen," Owens said. "Opened my eyes to a whole new level of soccer. A different way over there compared to here. The way they play, fast and skillful. Facilities are really good."

READ MORE: "From Paris, To Perfection! Gamecocks' National Championship parade."

Their coach, Patrick Gunderson also coaches at Philip Simmons High School was tremendously impressed by the all-access type tour.

"Amazing experience for everyone participating as a player, coach, parents looking at inner workings of pro teams, and academy teams," Gunderson said. "Understanding how they run sessions. The highlight for me was watching our boys, integrated into a session with a tournament with kids from Venezia FC, and seeing them play with our kids. Playing with Italian kids as well."

For a small city, Charleston, with a large soccer community that now has a global reach.

Ancelotti equals Del Bosque as Madrid coach with second most European Cup games

Carlo  Ancelotti  took charge of his 60 th  game with  Real Madrid  in the   European Cup  against  Manchester City.  This tally makes him the joint second coach of our club with the most games in this competition, equalling  Vicente Del Bosque 's total number of appearances. Only  Miguel Muñoz , with 11 more games (71), surpasses the Italian's total. Of these 60 matches, 43 have been wins, 8 draws and 9 defeats, which have seen him lift the  European Cup  twice as a madridista (2014 and 2022).   Ancelotti  has always reached the semi-finals of this competition in his five seasons at our club. The Italian has made European football history and recently became the first coach to reach 200 appearances in the  Champions League  format. He is also the only manager to have won the  European Cup  four times.
