As the fourth largest city in the United States, it isn’t hard to find great field trip opportunities in Houston. Whether you are looking for an in-depth STEM trip or to bring history to life, Houston has you covered. Here are some of teachers’ favorite Houston field trip ideas:

The Texas Renaissance Festival School Days program in November brings history alive for students in every grade. Jousting, theater, music, trade, crafts, and medieval life are all on display with costumed actors. Students may also enter a variety of contests, including poetry, art, costume, and trebuchet. 

2. In and around Hermann Park

A great place for a full-day trip, Hermann Park is a major hub for Houston field trips for students of all ages. Start your day at the world-class Houston Zoo then enjoy your picnic lunch in the park itself. As a bonus, check out the train that goes throughout the park. Miller Outdoor Theater also puts on children’s performances throughout the year.

3. Drama, drama, drama

Alley Theatre , the Houston Symphony , the Houston Ballet , and Main Street Theater all offer student matinee performances throughout the year. These performances are generally reduced price or even free, depending on the venue and program. Post-performance discussions with the cast and crew are also included.

4. Not just dinosaur bones

Science and history come alive at the Houston Museum of Natural Science . The main campus also offers IMAX, a butterfly dome, and planetarium shows. The George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park features even more student experiences, including astronomy lessons and nature trails.

5. Hands-on learning

Learning comes alive at the Children’s Museum of Houston in all 14 of their hands-on exhibits featuring s cience and technology, history and culture, health and human development, math, literacy, and the arts. Upper elementary classes may also enjoy checking out their problem-solving or maker lab programs.

6. Back to the drawing board

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston offers guided and self-guided tours for student groups of all ages. Plus, it’s free for school groups!

7. It’s alive!

Younger students and older ones alike will have something great to do at the Health Museum , especially at one of the hands-on labs or lab demonstrations.

8. Holocaust Museum

With their mission to fight prejudice, hatred, and apathy while honoring the victims of the Holocaust, the Houston Holocaust Museum is more sober than many but still important in today’s world. Trained docents lead in-depth tours for students in sixth grade and above, and the museum also offers teaching aids and resources for all educators.

9. Houston, we have a field trip

With hundreds of activities, Space Center Houston is a great option for any STEM trip. There are several programs available for schools. In addition, FIRST LEGO League teams (as well as Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops) also have the opportunity for overnight trips.

10. We the People

The Houston Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas serves south and southeast Texas and offers tours for high school juniors and seniors, while City Hall is the seat of government and welcomes students ages nine and up. It is an opportunity for students to see how the government works up close. Municipal buildings and local city halls in the surrounding areas offer similar opportunities.

11. Once upon a time in Texas

Washington on the Brazos , Sam Houston Park , George Ranch Historical Park , San Jacinto Monument and Battleship Texas .  There are so many great living history and historical sites around Houston that it is hard to choose just one! Each of these sites offers a unique look at what life in Texas has been like throughout the ages, from the pioneer days through World War II.  

12. Tree Days

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty exploring the natural world at the Houston Arboretum . Students might not be planting trees or gardening all day, but they will learn about environmental science and the natural world.

13. Down on the farm

Old Macdonald Farm , Oil Ranch , Dewberry Farm —y ounger students will love life on the farm. In the fall, all feature seasonal activities, including live animals, pumpkin patches, and plenty of fun.

14. Check out the life aquatic

It may seem like just a restaurant or small amusement park at first, but the Downtown Aquarium also offers a first-class aquatic experience. You might even have time for the Ferris wheel. Moody Gardens , closer to Galveston, also offers close-ups to aquatic and rainforest life as well as overnight adventures.

• Minimum 12 children and adults, $4.50-9.50 per person

We offer programs for multiple grade levels and serve public, private, and homeschool organizations. Our team of instructors is trained in the best practices for outdoor education.

At least a Month prior to trip (we recommend booking well in advance):

Fill out a Field Trip Request form

Two to four weeks prior to trip:

• Complete required school documentation (field trip permission forms, transportation forms, contracts, etc.).
• Secure chaperones for trip; at least one chaperone for every ten students. Groups should not exceed 10 students.
• Chaperones must be 21 years of age or older.
• Coordinate transportation with your district.
• Download online curriculum
• Adjust final count of students, parents, teachers, and chaperones. Write this number on the Required Teacher Admission Sheet (page 2). All participants who are included in your school’s payment (students, parents, chaperones, and teachers) should be counted on that sheet.
• Adults not included in the chaperone count will need to purchase their own tickets at the full rate, if available, upon arrival at the Box Office. You must inform all chaperones of your venue and entry times for your reservation. Museum personnel are not allowed to give out this information for the safety of the students.
• Assign students to groups. One chaperone is required for every ten students. The group may not exceed 10 students.
• Prepare payment. Final payment is due upon check in. Cash payments must be consolidated into large bills.
• Review the Museum Etiquette guidelines with your students and chaperones (page 3).
• Ensure that all chaperones have a copy of the Museum Map and your field trip itinerary.
• Distribute curriculum to students along with necessary materials.
• Buses will unload on Hermann Park Drive near the “Bus Unloading Zone” signs. Lunches must be left on the bus unless prior arrangements have been made.
• Once unloaded, students will line up outside the main entrance at the “Teacher Reporting Point” while the lead teacher enters the Museum to check in.
• During check in, the lead teacher will provide a final count, payment, and the
• Required Teacher Admission Sheet (page 2).
• Once checked in, chaperones may lead their student group into the Museum. Remind chaperones that they must remain with their student group at all times, and they should arrive at least 15 minutes early to each ticketed venue, show or docent tour.

We strongly recommend scheduling your trip early in the school year to avoid overcrowding and the possible unavailability of your ideal dates and programs.

How do I make a reservation? E-mail us at [email protected]  or Submit the field trip booking form . A representative will get in touch with you to finalize your reservation.

Who can take a field trip? To qualify for school group discounts, you must belong to an educational organization (K-12), make advance reservations, and visit us Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. We require a minimum of 10 students to qualify for the field trip rate.

What if I have fewer than ten students? Groups of fewer than 10 students may still book a field trip; however, they will be charged for 10 students plus any chaperones. Our representatives are available to help determine the most cost-efficient method for your group to visit the Museum. Regular admission tickets may be purchased at the box office at any time.For an established field trip, the person who booked the trip may call (713) 639-4659 at any time prior to the day of arrival to add or subtract people from the reservation. Groups that fall below 10 students will be charged for 10 students plus any chaperones.

Do homeschool groups count as field trips? Homeschool groups with 10 students (K-12th grade) or more and visit the Museum Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. qualify for the field trip rate. Trips after 5 p.m. or on weekends do not qualify for field trip rates. If your group has less than 10 students, you may still be qualify for the field trip rate, but you will be charged for 10 students.

How many chaperones do I need? We require one chaperone for every group of ten students, and the chaperone must remain with their student group at all times. Chaperones must be at least 21 years of age and must wear their chaperone sticker. All adults (teachers, parents, and bus drivers) accompanying the field trip will be charged for a ticket; chaperones on the reservation will be eligible to receive the field trip rate. Those not included on the chaperone count (including teachers, parents, and bus drivers) will need to purchase their own tickets at the full rate, if available, on arrival.

How do I pay for my field trip? Field trips may be paid for in advance, by calling 713-639-4659 or mailing a check, or on the day of the trip. If you choose to pay on the day of the trip, the Museum will accept school district checks, credit cards, or cash (large bills only). A purchase order (PO) will not be accepted. Field trips must be paid for in one transaction. If paying separately, all students and chaperones on the reservation must give their payment to one person who will present the money at the box office.

Do teachers have to pay? Yes, teachers are considered chaperones and are charged the field trip rate as long as they are included on the reservation. If they are not included on the reservation, they will be charged the normal adult rate.

Can I change my itinerary? Adding or removing venues from a reservation requires a 24-hour notice. On the day of the trip, after the tickets have been printed, nothing on the reservation may be changed.

What if I need to cancel the trip? Can I get a refund? Cancellations must be made four business days in advance. After that time, you will be charged for the entire reservation. Refunds will be made only in the event of Museum equipment failure, power failures, malfunctions in projection equipment, etc. No other refunds will be issued.

Early investigations.

Early Investigations is the museum’s science enrichment program for children in grades K–3rd. Consisting of an engaging classroom session and interactive guided tour of one exhibit hall, the EI program is 1.5 hours of fun, scientific exploration! Students will handle real artifacts and specimens and participate in crafts and activities. 

Paleontology: Fun with Fossils

What are fossils? Investigate bones, claws, teeth, and more as students become junior paleontologists and study real fossil specimens up close and personal. Explore the adaptations of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals on a guided tour of the Morian Hall of Paleontology. Maximum capacity: 100.

Insect Zoo: Butterfly Center  

Exciting renovations are in progress for the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Please contact us for options and availability. Why do butterflies have such bright colors? How many legs do insects have? Investigate the characteristics, life cycle and various structures of common insects. Experience the rainforest in a guided tour of the Cockrell Butterfly Center and Brown Hall on Entomology and get an up-close look at a wide variety of bugs and butterflies. Maximum capacity: 100.

Texas Wildlife: Diverse Ecosystems

Explore the mammals, birds and reptiles native to Texas, learning the adaptations that help them thrive in different ecosystems. On a guided tour of the Farish Hall of Texas Wildlife, students will explore the fascinating creatures that populate our Texas landscapes. Maximum capacity: 70.

Native North Americans

Meet North America’s earliest residents and learn how they survived in the environment in which they lived. Investigate their tools, homes, foods and sources of entertainment. In the McGovern Hall of North America, encounter groups from the Inuits in Alaska to the Navajo of the Plains. Maximum capacity: 70.

Malacology: Under the Sea

Dive into the fascinating world of sea creatures, including squids, oysters, whelks, giant turtles and more! Students will have the opportunity to view real marine specimens in the Strake Hall of Malacology and in the Hammond Hall of Texas Coastal Ecology.  Maximum capacity: 100.

Energy: The Magic of Electricity

Ever wonder how we light our homes and power our televisions? Come join us in Early Investigations as we explore the Magic of Electricity. We will examine different forms of energy, operate a generator and experiment with magnets. Solar powered cars and human circuits are two of the wonders that we will experience. A tour of the Wiess Energy Hall will be included with our classroom activities.  Appropriate for 2nd–3rd graders | Maximum capacity: 70

Ancient Egypt: Build a Pyramid

Discover the land of pyramids and mummies, learning about Egyptian geography, architecture, beliefs/culture and the role of the Nile River in daily life. Investigate the tools used to construct the everlasting pyramids and get a closer look at actual Egyptian artifacts on a guided tour of The Hall of Ancient Egypt. Appropriate for 2nd–3rd graders | Maximum capacity: 70

Our interactive labs feature Museum specimens, artifacts and laboratory equipment. Students examine ancient objects, investigate technology, meet live animals or conduct scientific experiments depending on the nature of the lab booking. Each lab lasts one hour and includes admission to the Museum’s permanent exhibit halls for lab participants. Three new Weekday Lab topics are available monthly.

Pre-Recorded Group Labs

Pre-recorded Group Labs feature our dynamic museum educators along with museum specimens to bring some of our favorite scientific and cultural concepts to life. Your group or class will have 24 hours of access to the content, so they can watch the presentation as many times as they would like. Scroll down for a list of the topics that are available as pre-recorded presentations. More topics coming soon!

Pricing: As an introductory offer for our virtual, pre-recorded Group Labs, you and your audience get 24 hours of access to the topic of your choosing for only $150. Once you book with us and select your access date, you’ll receive a password-protected link you can share with your audience. You’ll also receive the password that will be active on the date of your program. Your audience will be able to log on using the designated password to watch the presentation at any time that fits their schedule on the date of your program. Virtual Group Labs are available from 8 a.m. on the date of your choosing until 8 a.m. the following day. During that time, your audience can watch the video at any time and as many times as they would like.

Live, Virtual Group Labs

Choose from our Group Lab topics and get a live, virtual Group Lab led by one of our experienced educators. Labs are presented via Zoom and last an hour, including time for questions at the end!* Presenters will use museum specimens, artifacts, and/or handouts to enhance their presentations on a variety of topics!

Please note: – Live, Virtual Dissection Labs will be dissection demonstrations with the opportunity to engage with the instructor and ask questions. – Chaperone assistance is required for 1st-3rd graders. – Latecomers will not receive additional time.

We assume students have basic school supplies such as washable markers, scissors, tape, paper, etc. but will send a list of supplies to gather and any paper materials specific to the lab activities to the email connected with your virtual lab purchase. Please note: access to a printer may be necessary. *If you are unable to use Zoom, please let us know at the time of booking so we can find an alternate platform.

Pricing: Our live, virtual Group Labs are $250 per presentation. Live, virtual Group Labs last approximately one hour, including both presentation time as well as time for Q&A at the end. Once you book with us and select your program date, you’ll receive a Zoom link you can share with your audience. You can join the presentation together or everyone can join us from home.

Groups & Field Experiences

Join our Education Team for action-packed, hands-on programs in science and technology, history and culture, health and human development, math, literacy in person or online. For group field trip transportation, consider booking a Houston charter bus from companies like GOGO Charters, Longhorn Charter Bus , or National Charter Bus, which provide options for any-size bus rental in Houston or throughout the U.S.

TEKS-Aligned Experiences

We believe learning outside of school supports learning in the classroom, and vice versa. All our exhibits and programs are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Visiting children can apply what they have learned in school and gain Tips to prepare them for future learning in class.

Guidelines and Policies

In order to maintain social distancing, Field Experiences require a ratio of 1 chaperone for every 10 students. Teachers are included in this chaperone ratio. Chaperone tickets are free to achieve this ratio. Additional chaperone tickets may be purchase if needed. ‍

Reservations and Cancellations

Full payment is due 30 days prior to your visit or can be made upon arrival. The Museum does not provide day of arrival adjustment or refunds. All sales are final, no refunds or exchanges. Groups with fewer students than reserved will receive general Museum admission tickets (one ticket for each student that is paid for but is not attending). Tickets may be used for additional chaperones accompanying your group. Excludes Title 1 admission program sponsored schools. Refunds will be made only in the event of Museum equipment failure, such as power failures or malfunctions in equipment. ‍

Outside food is not permitted in the Museum. ‍

Student Needs

Please let us know if your students have special challenges. Plan to bring an interpreter if this is needed for your ESL class. ‍

Souvenir grab bags are available from our Museum Gift Shop for $5.00. If your organization is tax exempt, please bring a copy of your certificate. Please place your order at least 48 hours in advance of your visit. ‍

Sick Child Policy

Teachers are expected to screen their student’s health prior to arriving at the Museum. Schools and organizations may be asked to provide signed confirmation that no student on a tour is ill. Should your group size change due to a child’s illness, we are happy to issue reserved general admission tickets to the Children’s Museum Houston (one ticket for each student that is paid for but is not attending) to be used at another time. Tickets may be used for additional chaperones accompanying your group. ‍

Schools are responsible to provide students with ID tags that include the name and telephone number of the sponsoring institution. ‍

Field experiences guided tours are perfect for teachers who want their students to have a learning and fun experience.  A Discovery Guide will be assigned to each class to tour the students throughout five exhibits 20 minutes each all hands-on activities.

Can I request a bilingual Discovery Guide?

Every effort will be made to provide a bilingual Discovery Guide for your tour; however, we cannot guarantee their availability. Plan to bring an interpreter if this is needed for your ESL class.

Hopes to inspire a new generation of oceanic explorers and conservationists through education and shared experiences to create an ever-expanding appreciation for our planet’s oceans, rain forests and deserts. The experience will instill respect and awe for species they do not see every day. Students will expand their understanding of our ecosystems as they remain engaged throughout the field trip formaximized learning.

All state certified teachers with teacher ID badge pays no admission.

Minimum of 15 people. Groups over 25 please call or email us so we can ensure your experience is a quality one!

If you are a tax-exempt entity, be sure to select the appropriate booking when making your online reservation above. You will be required to provide your tax-exempt ID.

LARGE GROUPS

Are eligible for private entry as early as 9 a.m. Field trip pricing is good for all Pre-K through 12th Grade students regardless of the size of the group (educational institutions, certified child care, home school, YMCA, or any other legitimately certified groups of children). Please show certification at the door.

LOW-INCOME SCHOOL DISTRICTS

May qualify for up to $2 per person discounts via our scholarship fund.

HOMESCHOOL CHILDREN

Are not required to have a 15-person minimum. The educational tour will be shorter for smaller groups, typically 15-20 minutes depending on the group. Homeschoolers are encouraged to pair up with other homeschoolers or contact Houston Interactive on which date you prefer, and they will gladly pair you up with others interested in that day.

To keep our Field Trip schedule running smoothly and on time in addition to accommodating all our groups, please try and be as punctual as possible and arrive only at your appointment time.

Houston Interactive Aquarium is looking for a childcare provider for our staff members who would like to bring their children to work with them. Typically 2-5 children ages 1 year to 12 years.

We have a child’s playroom equipped with tables, chairs, toys, sleeping mats, pillows, blankets, a TV, and cabinets. This will be where learning, playing, eating, and sleeping will take place. The entire facility will be available for the children to roam and explore as the caregiver sees fit. The children’s parents will bring all the food, drinks, bottles, and diapers that the child will need for the day, so no cooking or bottle sanitation is required of you.

Cleaning the toys daily and a weekly deep clean of the playroom will be required. The potential candidate would need to be at the Austin Aquarium from 9:00 AM – 8:30 PM various days of the week. Flexible scheduling will be based on each candidate’s available schedule.

This is not a licensed daycare facility, nor are we looking to become a licensed daycare facility. We are looking for someone with experience to babysit the children brought to work with their parents while providing them with a fun and safe learning environment.

You MUST have previous childcare experience to qualify for this job.

You MUST pass a background check and drug test before starting the position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Training of animals for public encounters & medical behaviors.

Providing enrichment behaviors.

Prepares diets for the animal collection and cleaning animal holding areas.

Responsible for the daily observation of animal health and welfare.

Maintains daily reports and other records.

Assists with the movement, capture, and restraint of animals.

Assists with animal health procedures.

Answers visitors’ questions about the facility and the animals, as necessary.

Reports births, deaths, injuries, and/or other irregular behaviors of animals to management.

Reports maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to management.

Performs minor repairs and improvements of exhibits under supervision.

Assists in training interns and volunteers.

Public speaking in animal encounters, media events, and educational tours.

Upselling animal encounters and membership sales.

Monitoring the health of animals, and medicating as necessary.

Leading Educational/Interpretive Guided Tours for Schools, Birthday party groups, and other groups.

Carries out duties and job assignments, delegated by appropriate management

Desired Skills & Experience

Candidates must possess an excellent safety record, solid observational and record-keeping skills, strong work history with exotic mammals, and the ability to interact and communicate well with guests and co-workers.

Desired skills include, but are not limited to, animal husbandry, operant conditioning, basic knowledge of training animals, environmental enrichment, exhibit maintenance, and minor repair.

Hands-on experience caring for and/or training exotic animals such as lemurs, red kangaroos, two-toed sloths, kinkajous, tamanduas, etc.

Possess knowledge of disease recognition, husbandry, food preparation, nutrition

The ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with ease, able to stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, jump, rake, sweep and carry objects for short distances, possess visual acuity appropriate for animal care and general safety practices, be able to remain on feet for long periods of time, and be able to lift and reach overhead.

Willingness to learn and master husbandry procedures exactly and without deviation

The ability to maintain a positive attitude while working individually and with others in a team environment is essential.

We are looking for a Janitor, or custodian, to take care of our buildings and carry out cleaning and maintenance. The goal is to keep our buildings in a clean and orderly condition. Please know this position is labor-intensive.

Responsibilities

• Clean and supply designated building areas (dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning ceiling vents, restroom cleaning, etc)
• Carry out heavy cleansing tasks and special projects
• Notify management of occurring deficiencies or needs for repairs
• Cooperate with the rest of the staff
• Follow all health and safety regulations
• Proven working experience as a janitor
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies

Interaction Specialists are needed to help create amazing guest interactive experiences with our many reptiles and mammals. Qualities possessed for this position are high energy, engaging, friendly and confident. A people person who enjoys sharing knowledge & love of animals and interaction with kids and adults alike.

Carry an animal or work in an enclosure around the facility to enhance our guest’s interactive experience.

Reports irregular behaviors of animals to management.

Carries out duties and job assignments, delegated by appropriate management.

Candidates must possess the ability to interact and communicate well with guests and co-workers.

Hands-on experience with birds, reptiles, and exotic mammals.

We’re looking for someone to fill a pivotal role in ensuring guest satisfaction at our aquarium. You will be focused on optimizing each guest’s experience by promoting memberships, token sales, and passing on overall knowledge of how our facility/encounters work.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

• Have two years or more of customer service , guest relations, or sales experience.
• Special consideration will be given to those who exhibit a proven track record of exemplary customer service/sales performance in other business fields with strong leadership abilities, excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Be incredibly friendly , love to smile, and have an uplifting and welcoming demeanor.
• Have good computer skills and POS experience.
• Check guests in a courteous manner using selling techniques to upsell tokens or memberships/annual passes.
• Respond quickly to guest requests or complaints in a friendly manner and appropriate action is taken. If needed get a member of management involved to ensure 100% guest satisfaction.
• Be on time and reliable
• Provides a professional image at all times through appearance and dress.

This person MUST have open availability and be able to work weekends and holidays.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Keeping the dress-up room neat, and in order at all times. Hanging up/cleaning costumes and other equipment (makeup tools, wigs, etc.) properly after each use.
• Getting ready within 30-60 minutes, to be on the floor – in costume, by a certain time.
• Constant happy smiles, animated body language, and interacting   with customers of all ages.  Engaging guests to come up to interact with you, and take photos with you.
• Handing out animal food and explaining to guests how to feed the animals.
• Applying glitter tattoos to guests in exchange for tokens.

As a Reptile Keeper, you will oversee reptile staff to ensure the department is abiding by company standards and any associated permitting. Though not limited to, other responsibilities would be the following:

Handling and presentation of animals for public encounters. Prepares diets for the animal collection and cleaning animal holding areas. Responsible for the daily observation of animal health and welfare. Maintains daily reports and other records. Assists with the movement, capture, and restraint of animals. Assists with animal health procedures. Answers visitors’ questions about the facility and the animals, as necessary. Reports births, deaths, injuries, and/or other irregular behaviors of animals to management. Reports maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to management. Performs minor repairs and improvements of exhibits under supervision. Assists in training new keepers, interns, and volunteers. Public speaking in animal encounters, media events, and educational tours. Monitoring the health of animals, and medicating as necessary. As needed, leading Educational/Interpretive Guided Tours for Schools, Birthday party groups, and other groups. Carries out duties and job assignments, delegated by supervisor. Desired Skills & Experience

Minimum 5 years experience with handling various reptile species, including tegus, caiman, alligator, pythons, hognose, skinks, and other assorted species. Candidates must possess an excellent safety record, solid observational and record-keeping skills, a strong work history, and the ability to interact and communicate well with guests and co-workers. Desired skills include, but are not limited to, animal husbandry, environmental enrichment, exhibit maintenance, and minor repair. Possess knowledge of disease recognition, husbandry, food preparation, and nutrition. The ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with ease, able to stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, jump, rake, sweep and carry objects for short distances, possess visual acuity appropriate for animal care and general safety practices, be able to remain on feet for long periods of time, and be able to lift and reach overhead. Willingness to learn and master husbandry procedures exactly and without deviation. The ability to maintain a positive attitude while working individually and with others in a team environment is essential.

Bird Specialist will be responsible for all aspects of the daily care of our large resident parrots, providing an enriching environment for the animals and educational experiences for guests.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Participate in the primary care of the large parrots
• Routine cleaning and maintenance of the birdhouse and other bird areas
• Prepare food and feed according to established procedures
• Maintain all feeding and medical records
• Participate in behavioral enrichment
• Supervise and train the aviary staff members, they are taking care of birds that you are both responsible for. Be able to step in for those staff members to cover breaks, etc.
• Narrate and interact with birds during educational bird shows and answering guest questions
• Maintain professional working relationships with entire aquarium staff and maintain a professional appearance
• Be able to work both independently and as a team
• May plan and direct the work of junior trainers, interns, and volunteers
• Monitor and ensure safe working environments for birds, staff, and guests
• Public speaking and presentations during outreach events as required

Take a seat inside the McGovern Theater and follow a live dissection of a cow eye or a sheep heart performed by one of the Museum science educators.

Suitable for PK – 12 th 45-60 mins, $6-$12/student

Under the guidance of a science educator, students will learn about the structure and function of major organs, while getting an up-close look at some unique animal adaptations.

See long, stringy DNA strands after breaking down cell membranes of a wheat germ.

Make, stain, and look at a sheep blood smear through a microscope to appreciate different types of blood cells, RBCs, WBCs, and platelets (along with human blood smear samples available in the lab).

Bus Vouchers

Bus vouchers are available for field trips who come to tour the “Drugs: Costs & Consequences” exhibit. Take advantage before the offer ends on May 27 th ! 

Eligibility & Requirements

• Each bus must have a minimum of 30 students to be eligible for the voucher reimbursement (up to $500). 
• Schools are responsible for reserving their transportation.
• Once your trip date is confirmed, please request the invoice to be sent to The Health Museum for the cost of the bus. 

Field Trip FAQs

How do i reserve a field trip.

Complete and submit the online reservation form . After your reservation request is submitted, if the date requested is available, an invoice will be emailed to the contact person submitting this form within five (5) business days.

How do I pay for my field trip?

Field trip reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. A non-refundable deposit of $50 must be received 2 weeks after your reservation has been confirmed, to ensure your field trip date is secured. The non-refundable deposit is credited towards the total balance due. Reservations without paid deposits within two weeks will be canceled. A non-refundable deposit is not required if the reservation is paid in full within two weeks.

Payments can be made by credit card or check. Please make checks payable to “The Health Museum”, and include your invoice/sales order ID number. You may drop off your check at the museum or mail it to: The Health Museum – Reservations Department 1515 Hermann Drive, Houston, TX 77004

Final payments are due no later than 14 business days before your field trip. Reservations without paid balances will be canceled. If you are reserving a field trip within 14 business of your visit, the reservation must be paid in full upon receiving your confirmation.

If scheduling multiple reservations, a separate payment is required for each date reserved. If checks include more than one reservation payment, it will not be accepted.

Any chaperones not included in the reservation and paying separately will pay the regular museum admission. Museum memberships and guest passes/vouchers are not valid for field trip entrance.

If add-on labs are reserved with a field trip, and the full payment is not received 20 business days before the scheduled field trip, an educator cannot be guaranteed and the lab will be canceled.

Can I make changes to my reservation?

• Rescheduling or changes can be made until 14 business days before your scheduled field trip. Changes must be made in writing via email to [email protected].
• Schools bringing fewer students than reserved will be given general admission vouchers for each student who is paid for but not attending; no monetary refunds will be given.
• Schools bringing more students than reserved will be expected to pay for the additional students and chaperones upon arrival. Space is not guaranteed, and accommodations will be made based on availability.
• Vouchers, gift passes, Museum memberships, and general admission tickets cannot be used to pay for field trip reservations.

What if I need to cancel my field trip?

• Cancellations must be received in writing by e-mail within at least 14 business days prior to the scheduled field trip date.
• Any “no-shows” or schools that fail to cancel within 14 business days prior to the scheduled field trip will be billed for the full contracted amount of the reservation.

How many chaperones can I bring?

• We require that K-12 schools bring one chaperone for every ten students. The required chaperones will receive complimentary general admission.
• Each additional chaperone will be charged the adult group rate of $8.
• Chaperones or parents who arrive and pay independently of the group will be charged the regular adult admission rate of $10.

Where do buses drop off and pick up students?

Bus pick-up and drop-off are on La Branch Street at the group entrance of The Health Museum. Bus parking is not available along La Branch St., but limited bus parking is available along other streets in the Museum District. For The Health Museum, we recommend trying to park your bus along Crawford Street next to the museum. Please give your bus driver this information so all our guests can safely arrive and depart.

Where do individual vehicles park?

If you will be arriving in individual vehicles, parking is available in our surface lot for $8 per vehicle.

Can we eat lunch at The Health Museum?

We do not have an onsite lunch facility, or an area for students to eat lunch. However, many groups bring a picnic lunch and eat across the street at Hermann Park or McGovern Centennial Gardens before or after their scheduled field trip. If you plan on attending the museum for more than 2 hours, please inform reservations in advance so that accommodations can be made.

Can I preview The Health Museum before our field trip?

We welcome all teachers to visit the Museum in advance of their scheduled field trip. We recommend attending a Teacher Tour or just visiting to find out what the Museum has to offer and how to use it in your classroom. We would also be happy to attend a faculty meeting or parent organization meeting to present our programs.

As a current member, will my FIELD TRIP reservation HAVE any additional discounts?

Memberships cannot be used for additional discounts on school field trips or group visits. For additional information please contact Reservations at [email protected].

How can I plan my trip prior to my visit?

Complete required school documentation (field trip permission forms, transportation forms, etc.). Secure chaperones, including the required emergency chaperone, for the trip and ensure that they are aware of arrival and departure times. Confirm your final headcount. Chaperones not included in the reservation and paying separately will pay the regular museum admission rate. And review field trip educator guide.

Day Before Your Field Trip

Assign student groups to chaperones (10 students per one chaperone required). Confirm the required contingency chaperone is ready with their own transportation.

Day of Field Trip: Arrival

Museum doors will open at 10:00 a.m. Please let bus drivers know to drop off the students and chaperones on La Branch St. NOTE: We do not provide school bus or motor coach parking. If you are running late for any reason, please contact the Visitor’s Service Desk at 713-521-1515.

Day of Field Trip: During Your Visit

• All tours are self-guided.
• Chaperones must remain with their students throughout the visit and are responsible for their group’s behavior.
• For everyone’s safety, no running or rough play is permitted. Please emphasize the importance of using inside voices while within the museum.
• If your group visits the museum’s gift store, please note that a maximum of 5 students (accompanied by a chaperone) are allowed at a time.
• We want our visitors to enjoy their experience at The Health Museum and expect all groups to respect other visitors. If these guidelines are not followed, you may be asked to leave the museum. If this occurs, you will not be refunded for your visit.

Day of Field Trip: Departure

When your group is ready to depart, please call for your bus only when your entire group is at the bus pick-up area and ready to leave.

Group Tours and School Field Trips

Please read the following guidelines for group trips to mcgovern centennial gardens:, school field trips.

• Reservations are required for school field trips.
• Field trip hours are from 9 am to 11 am and 1 pm to 3 pm, Monday-Friday. 
• Field trips between 11 am and 1 pm are not allowed.
• School groups are not allowed to eat lunch inside the McGovern Centennial Gardens. 
• A maximum of 200 students are allowed in the Gardens at one time.
• One chaperone is required for every ten students.
• Field trips are self-guided.
• The rear gates on Caroline Street are closed daily between 11 am and 1 pm.
• Large buses are not allowed in Parking Lot C. All loading and unloading must occur on Hermann Drive.
• Please refer to  this list  of Houston Parks and Recreation Department's rules and regulations.

Prom Photography or Prom-Related Events

• Reservations are required for prom group photos or other prom-related events with 15 or more people total (parents and photographers included).

The School Field Trip season for 2023-24 are SOLD OUT. We’ll see you next season!

Field Trips Information

Welcome to our Field Trips Reservations system where you can take care of everything in one place! Book your spot, pay online, and your tickets will be mailed out the following Tuesday.

Schools with Title I accreditation and schools within Houston City Limits qualify for free admission . View the Texas Education Agency, Federal Program Compliance to see if you qualify.

• Students: $15
• Adult chaperones: $17
• Processing fees: $25 (payable by credit card only)
• Wildlife Carousel rides: $3 per ticket

Payment is due at the time of your booking. Once payment is finalized, your booking cannot be modified. You will automatically receive a detailed receipt by email. Tickets will be mailed every Tuesday. All tickets and processing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Booking stops automatically for each day when capacity is reached. No exception will be made.

Booking Your Field Trip

To book your field trip, you will need :

• A credit card (only form of payment available)
• Name, address, and district of your school
• Name, phone number, and email of an official contact booking the field trip
• Total number of students
• Number of chaperons (automatically calculated based on ratio described below)
• Number of extra adults (not covered by the free chaperon program) and extra children visiting with your group
• Number of buses
• Name and phone number for an emergency contact while on Zoo grounds the day of the field trip

Chaperone Program

Chaperone calculations are as follows:

• One free adult chaperone for every ten students grades K-12
• One free adult chaperone for every five Pre-K students
• One free adult chaperone for every one Person with Special Needs (PSN)

Chaperones must accompany their groups for the duration of the visit. Free chaperon tickets will be added automatically to your cart according to the ratio above. Teachers, staff, and bus driver are considered part of this ratio. Purchase additional adult discounted tickets for any adults not part of that ratio. Tickets are not available to purchase at the gate.

Buses and Parking

All bus drivers must unload students at Hermann Park Drive curbside, between Gates 4 and 7. A Zoo Ranger/Security Officer will assist teachers and students during unloading. This area is designated as bus parking so buses may remain there once the children have been unloaded. A security officer will patrol this area for the duration of the field trip. At the end of your students’ visit, you will load students, chaperones and teachers back at the curb at Hermann Park Drive where originally dropped off. Zoo Rangers will assist with making sure all students load buses safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who qualifies for field trips.

Only educational institutions accredited by the Texas Education Agency or the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission qualify for school field trips. Requests made by affiliate programs will be denied.

Which schools qualify for free field trips?

Public and private schools located within the Houston city limits and Title 1 schools in outlying cities qualify for free field trips. Processing fees apply and are not refundable.

Who is considered a chaperone?

Any adult accompanying your group is required to have an adult ticket (either a complementary chaperon ticket or a paid adult ticket). If a chaperone has a Houston Zoo Membership, they are able to use the membership for entry. (Please note that all students must have a field trip ticket and cannot enter with a membership.)

What is your cancellation policy?

All tickets and processing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Houston Zoo reserves the right to cancel any program due to inclement weather, or unforeseen circumstances, in which case tickets will be refunded. For more questions, email us at [email protected] .

How do I schedule a field trip in the summer?

Our field trip program runs from September through May, please schedule accordingly. If you plan a visit to visit Houston Zoo this summer (June through August), discounted admission is available for groups of 20 people or more. Please visit our Group Admission Discounts page for details.

What if it rains on the day of our visit?

The Zoo is open rain or shine. We have many indoor facilities, and if you dress for the weather, you can still thoroughly enjoy your visit!

Where do buses park?

How does my group enter the Zoo?

We ask that you distribute all tickets to your students before approaching the main entrance. You will be directed by a member of our staff to line up before proceeding through the gate.

What if a student or chaperone in my group is arriving late?

Tickets for late arrivals may be left at Guest Services for pick up. Upon checking in and retrieving their ticket, they will then be granted entry separate from your group.

What if I do not have enough tickets or a chaperon needs to buy a ticket?

Any extra adult tickets not already booked for your field trip will need to be purchased, in advance, on the website like other general admission tickets.

If you need more tickets, you are welcome to book through the field trip page for additional tickets if capacity allows (enter zero for bus quantity), or purchase regular tickets online as regular guests, either through discounted group tickets or daytime admission tickets .

No tickets are sold onsite.

What if I have extra tickets?

We ask that any extra tickets be returned to Guest Services before your departure. As a reminder, unused tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Please note that tickets are only valid for individuals in your group.

Where can we store our lunches?

You are welcome to bring outside food and drink, however, there is no storage area available for these items. We have several picnic and shady areas around the Zoo where you may enjoy your lunch. We suggest choosing a place ahead of time and communicating that location to your group. We appreciate you reminding students to pick up after themselves before departing.

What must I do if an emergency occurs while we are at the Zoo?

If you are in need of assistance while on Zoo grounds, look for a Zoo Ranger wearing a red polo shirt. If you are unable to locate a Ranger, call 713-533-6500.

What rules should we follow during our visit?

Before you arrive, please visit the Guest Services page to review all rules regarding food and drink and which items you can and cannot bring into the Zoo. There is also a list of reminders to “Mind Your Zoo Manners” on our Zoo maps. An adult chaperone should accompany your students at all times.

How do I find information about the train in Hermann Park?

The train is owned and operated by the Hermann Park Conservancy. For more information about hours and tickets, visit their website at www.hermannpark.org/visit/train-pedal-boats/

SCHOOL TOURS & FIELD TRIPS

School Tour  – a 45 minute scheduled, guided tour through  AGVENTURE  in NRG Center Field Trip  – completely self-guided and at your own time and pace

Both School Tours and Field Trips may visit the rest of the Rodeo grounds, including Fun on the Farm and The Junction, on their own. Access to NRG Stadium, including the rodeo and concert, is not included for either type. Ticket packets are sent out in February.

Please note that the School Tours and Field Trip program is separate from the Special Children’s Committee Day Tours. For more information on tours for individuals with special needs, please click here .

Complimentary admission tickets to the Houston Livestock Show are provided for school children and a limited number of chaperones. To ensure as many children as possible are able to participate, we limit the number of complimentary adult tickets to an adult to children ratio of 1:8. If your group requires more than the recommended adults, you may purchase general admission tickets at the gate or online for $20.

Parking passes are provided for official school buses only. Private cars and other vehicles may park in the Yellow Lot off Main Street. The fee to park in the Yellow Lot is $25 per car; free tram service is available from the Yellow Lot to the NRG Park entrance. Parking also may be purchased at various other locations. Any bus without a parking pass will be redirected to the Green Lot off Lantern Point. The fee for a bus to park in Green Lot is $50 per bus and is subject to availability.

VIP Tours are for adult and young adult organizations and groups. Led by the Tours Committee, the tours foster understanding of the activities, events, and economic support provided by the Rodeo, as well as the importance of agriculture in Texas’ economy.

Please Note:   Tours are offered daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the run of the Rodeo. The committee cannot guarantee availability of time and date requested. Groups are responsible for arrangements, transportation, parking, admission tickets and meals. Requests for tours of restricted access areas must be approved by Rodeo management prior to tour confirmation.

Special Children's Committee Day Tours

The Special Children’s Committee hosts tours for more than 1,500 special needs individuals. These groups, which are primarily from schools, have the opportunity to tour AGVENTURE, see the pig races, spend the day at Fun on the Farm, and more. Participation in these tours are through social agencies and schools on our agency list. The limited number of tickets are distributed as equitably as possible every year. 1. The largest crocodilian facility in the nation! Crocodilian species from around the world. Designed by educators for educators. Each area of Crocodile Encounter presents a different educational lesson and you always have a trained guide to present the information. Our guides are the best in the business and are great educators as well as very entertaining!

2. It's not all crocodiles. Even though crocodiles are what we are best known for students get up close with tortoises, snakes, lizards, kangaroos, antelope, and the American icon the bison!

2. Crocodile Encounter field trips are interactive, educational, and fun! Your students are never bored and the field trip is contained so no threat of lost students (Did we mention designed by educators for educators?)

3. You really don't need chaperones( but feel free to bring them along) as the kids are always paying attention and rotating from different areas and presenters in a manner that keeps them on task and learning. If your school includes chaperones in the school payment they receive a discounted admission! Otherwise they are welcome and just pay standard admission upon arrival to Crocodile Encounter. Classroom teachers are free with their class. (A rate of 1 teacher for every 20 students.)

4. Crocodile Encounter has 2 large pavilion's for your lunch as well as our snack area. Full restroom facilities with hand washing stations are also available.

5. We limit guest numbers daily to ensure a positive experience for both you and your students. Depending on your school's student number you may be the only group in the facility during your visit. 

6. No visit is ever the same as we are constantly changing exhibits and adding species. Every year is bigger and better than the year before. Be part of the growth of a world class crocodilian facility!

7. Animals, animals, animals in an interactive, up close experience you students will never forget!

How to book your school field trip

1. call or email for available dates - calls are fast but emails enable a record of our conversation, great for checking details., 2. book as early as possible. we fill the busy field trip months of february  - may very quickly but even if your a late planner we will can usually work your group into the calendar .   (but don't forget october/november/december are excellent field trip months with lots of croc activity and good human weather) , 3. if your school is not using field trips please consider one of our popular assembly shows for your campus. they are a cost effective way to bring wildlife/science education into your school..

• 4. Be as accurate as possible when requesting ticket quantities. Excessive amounts of unused tickets limit the number of students who may benefit from a trip to Crocodile Encounter.  All tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.     Payment must be received by your visit date for entry to Crocodile Encounter.

You will automatically receive a detailed receipt by email.  If you choose to cancel your reservation, we will do our best to reschedule based on availability.  Cancellations within 30 days of your event are nonrefundable.  Crocodile Encounter reserves the right to cancel any program due to minimum enrollment, inclement weather, or unforeseen circumstances, in which case a full refund will be issued.
