FlyOver Iceland offers an exhilarating way to experience the country's diverse and otherworldly landscapes without ever leaving Reykjavík. This state-of-the-art ride simulates flight, offering breathtaking views of Iceland's most scenic terrain. Participants sit in chair lift-style seats that are suspended in front of a 65-foot, spherical screen that provides stunning visuals of the Icelandic landscape. Along with the visuals and gentle motion, wind, light mist and scents fully engage the senses.

Before the approximately 10-minute "flight" starts, you are treated to two preflight shows that allow you to explore the striking nature of Iceland, as well as Iceland’s rich history and unique mythology. Before the ride kicks off, an animated Icelandic storyteller welcomes guests into an ancient Viking longhouse. He narrates while a shadow-play projection brings it all to life.

The narrator guides you through the second experience using video, audio and music. The guide is a character based on old troll mythology designed by the world-renowned illustrator and author Brian Pilkington. He leads you through three acts. The first act is centered around the power of Iceland’s nature, including active volcanoes, mighty glaciers and towering waterfalls. The next act introduces the island’s first settlers, while the final act shows what it took for Icelanders to make Iceland home.

How long is FlyOver Iceland?

In total, the experience lasts about 35 minutes. The "flight" portion lasts a little over eight minutes.

FlyOver Iceland is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. FlyOver Icleand is easily reached on foot from downtown Reykjavík; it's located in the Grandi neighborhood, which sits west of the city center near the Old Harbour area.

Prices start at 5,690 Icelandic króna (about $41) for adults and 3,690 Icelandic króna (about $26) for kids ages 12 and younger. If you purchase your tickets on-site, you'll pay a slightly higher price. Visit FlyOver Iceland's website for more information.

#1 Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

The aurora borealis (or northern lights ) can be an almost eerie sight: Picture emerald green swirls coloring the otherwise darkened sky. But scientists have a boring explanation for this phenomenal natural light show – "collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the Earth's atmosphere," according to the Northern Lights Center. Still, it's a pretty breathtaking sight, and if you're visiting Reykjavik in winter, you might want to carve out some time for northern lights gazing.

Although you can see the lights from Reykjavik, you'll increase your chances of viewing them outside of the city away from the "light pollution" from exterior and interior lighting (such as streetlamps). To help you find the best areas for spotting the northern lights (and take advantage of round-trip transportation from your accommodations), previous travelers recommend taking a tour with local companies like BusTravel Iceland or Reykjavik Excursions – some of which are the best Iceland tours . In addition to finding the northern lights, tour guides may also help you take better pictures. But keep in mind that the aurora borealis requires a perfect cocktail of climate conditions in order to show – so you're not guaranteed to see the elusive display of lights even if you book an organized tour.

More than 55 global airlines still fly over Russia, including to and from the US: 'a crisis in the making'

• The US and most countries in Europe closed their airspace to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine .
• Still, dozens of airlines — mostly in Asia and the Middle East — continue to overfly Russia.
• Carriers including Air India and Emirates cross Russian skies on routes to and from the US.

Even though Russian airspace is closed to US airlines , many Americans may still end up flying through Russian skies.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the US and many other Western nations imposed sanctions against Moscow .

This included closing off their respective airspace, meaning US airlines and most European carriers cannot currently fly over Russia — a reality reminiscent of the Cold War.

These airlines are now effectively banned from the favorable polar routes that more quickly connect far-away destinations, forcing carriers to spend extra time and money to skirt borders — or even cut routes altogether.

However, data sent to Insider from travel data provider OAG, shows some 56 global cargo and passenger airlines are scheduled to fly to Russia in October and will traverse its airspace.

This includes four European carriers: Air Serbia, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and Belarus' Belavia. FlightRadar24 cites the airlines' country's close relations with Moscow for the continued service.

A handful are also from Africa, like Egyptair and Ethiopian Airlines.

Most of the carriers still overflying Russia, however, are based in Asia and the Middle East — many of which are household names like Qatar Airways, Air China, Etihad Airways, and Emirates.

And, some of these routes are even flying to and from the US.

Emirates' route between Dubai and Los Angeles takes a northerly path directly up and across Russia before jumping over the North Pole and then turning back south towards the US West Coast, according to data from FlightAware .

And, while not on OAG's list because it does not directly serve Russia, Air India still regularly crosses Russian airspace on flights between New Delhi and US cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.

Uzbekistan Airways operates a similar routing between New York and its capital of Tashkent, as does Qatar from Doha.

A handful of flights operated by Chinese carriers between the US and China will overfly Russia on routes to and from the US as well, though the 16 new ones approved since May are detouring around Russia, Reuters reported in August.

Air India, Emirates, Qatar, and Uzbekistan did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Safety concerns arise as foreign airlines overfly Russia

In June, an Air India aircraft headed to San Francisco experienced an engine problem when flying over Russia and had to make an emergency landing.

Related stories

Passengers, including some US citizens, had to rough it in the remote Siberian town where barely any support was available. Travelers reported there was little food, and the makeshift accommodations looked like a school.

The carrier was later criticized over its decision to land in Russia given its ongoing war with Ukraine, NBC News reported.

The event came after members of Congress urged the White House in February to ban all non-American airlines flying to and from the US from travering Russian airspace.

"The risk to Americans flying over Russian airspace is real, as demonstrated by Russian-backed separatists that shot down a Malaysian Airlines flight, killing all 298 passengers on board, or the government of Belarus, using as a pretense a false-bomb alert, ordered a Ryanair flight over its territory to land so that it could seize and detain a particular passenger," Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and James Risch (R-ID) wrote in the letter, which was viewed by Reuters .

Malaysian Airlines flight 17 was shot down in July 2014 using weapons believed to be supplied to the separatists by Putin, international investigators said in February 2023.

Top officials also say the Russian president gave the go-ahead for Belarus to divert a Ryanair plane in May 2021 so it could arrest Belarusian opposition journalist Roman Protasevich — a move that received condemnation from countries like the US, Australia, and EU member states.

"What's going to happen if an airline lands in Russia with some prominent US citizens on board?" United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby, who has been vocal about barring airlines from overflying Russia on US routes, said at IATA's Annual General Meeting in June. "That is a crisis in the making, and I think we should solve it before the crisis happens."

Avoiding Russian skies puts US airlines at a disadvantage

During a February presentation, airline lobbying group Airlines for America said carriers like Air India, Emirates, and China Eastern Airlines are unfairly taking customers from US airlines because they have access to Russian airspace — an advantage that grants them shorter flight times, less fuel consumption, and overall lower costs.

"This situation is directly to the benefit of foreign airlines and at the expense of the US as a whole, with fewer connections to key markets, fewer high-paying airline jobs, and a dent in the overall economy," A4A told the NYT.

The Times noted fares between New Delhi and New York on Air India and American Airlines at the time differed by hundreds of dollars.

Looking at the time of writing for mid-November, a ticket on Air India is nearly $2,000 cheaper than American. The latter airline needs to spend an extra 90 minutes in the air because it can't cross Russia.

In its presentation, A4A called on the federal government to take action, noting the problem could cost US airlines a combined $2 billion per year.

This was a particular concern earlier this year when Chinese airlines were using Russian airspace on routes to the US .

"It's a big issue for us," Kirby said in June, The Air Current reported.

However, the 16 additional flights approved by regulators since May bring the total to 48 total roundtrips allowed by US and Chinese airlines — or 24 per country.

This is expected to help remedy the competitive disadvantage US airlines were facing, with Delta Air Lines and United both adding flights to China this fall.

The two dozen flights are still significantly less than the more than 150 roundtrips running before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, but A4A told Reuters in August it "supports the gradual reopening of US-China air services commiserate with increases in passenger demand over time."

"Today's modified Order ensures fair and equal opportunity for US airlines to compete in," it continued.

More than 60 airlines worldwide offer scheduled services to and from Russia.

• Many major airlines still operate scheduled services to Russia, including Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air China, Turkish Airlines, and El Al.

It has been nearly two years since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Many western countries in the Americas and Europe put sanctions on Russia and major airlines stopped serving the country altogether. Some countries like the United States went as far as cutting all industrial and aviation support for Russian-owned aircraft.

There still are numerous countries that operate scheduled services to various destinations in Russia. Simple Flying compiled a list of major airlines still operating in Russia, while highlighting other carriers in the respective regions. The analysis is based on data from RusTourismNews.com

Multiple daily flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg

The largest airline in the Middle East, Emirates, runs multiple daily services between its hub in Dubai and Russia . The airline flies up to three times daily between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Moscow Domodevo (DME), and up to twice daily to St. Petersburg (LED). Emirates operates a mix of A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs to Moscow and the triple sevens to St. Petersburg.

The remaining two of the Middle Eastern big three, Etihad and Qatar Airways, also operate scheduled services to multiple destinations in Russia from their respective hubs in Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Doha (DOH). Additionally, a range of full-service and low-cost carriers, such as FlyDubai and Air Arabia, operate services to Russia.

2 Ethiopian Airlines

Four times weekly service to moscow.

Africa is another region where many airlines operate scheduled services to Russia. One of the largest airlines in the continent, Ethiopian Airlines, operates four times weekly service between its hub in Addis Ababa (ADD) and Moscow (DME). Ethiopians operate the smallest version of the Boeing 787, the -8 Dreamliner, on the route.

African Nations Sign Aviation Development Agreements With Russia

Other major carriers in Africa, including Royal Air Maroc, Egypt Air, and Air Algerie, among others, fly to various destinations in Russia. While some airlines do not directly operate in and out of Russian airports, they operate in Russian airspace, achieving efficiency and cost advantage over large Western carriers.

3 Air China

Once daily flight to moscow.

China enjoys an open air agreement with Russia, giving it a significant advantage over Western airlines. Several Chinese and Asia-Pacific airlines operate scheduled services to Russia. The three largest air carriers, Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern, operate scheduled services to Russia. Air China and China Eastern operate once-daily service between their bases in Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG), respectively, to Moscow Sheremetyevo (SVO). China Southern operates a four-time weekly schedule between Guangzhou (CAN) and SVO.

Russia Still Wants To Collaborate With China On Long-Range Aircraft Program

Sichuan Airlines and VietJet operate scheduled services to multiple destinations in Russia. All Chinese carriers use the Russian airspace for their flights to Europe and the Americas, benefiting from shorter and more economical routing than other carriers.

4 Turkish Airlines

Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, operates multiple daily flights to various destinations in Russia. The airline operates six daily flights between its hub at Istanbul Airport (IST) and Moscow Vnukovo (VKO), primarily using the Airbus A330 aircraft. The airline also operates a three-time daily service between IST and St. Petersburg (LED) using the Airbus A320 family aircraft.

Reports Suggest Some Russian Airlines Could Launch Turkish Carriers

Other major Eastern European carriers, including Tailwind, Corendon, Belevia, and Air Serbia, all operate scheduled flights to Russia. Air Serbia flies to four Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, and Sochi. Similarly, Pegasus Airlines operates multiple weekly routes to Russian destinations.

Twice daily flights to Moscow

El Al of Israel operates scheduled services to and from Russia . The airline operates up to two daily services between Tel Avia Ben Gurion (TLV) and Moscow (DME). The 5 hours and 50 minutes nonstop service is operated on the carrier’s Boeing 737-900. The return leg to TLV is scheduled for 5 hours and 25 minutes.

Other regional airlines, including Royal Jordanian, Cham Wings, Syrian Airlines, Iraqi Airways, and Mahan Air, operate scheduled services to several destinations in Russia. Most of these airlines operate flights to Russia using their single-aisle aircraft.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association will fly 56 aircraft over the National Mall on Saturday in a celebration of aviation in the works for more than a year.

The event will feature a wide array of aircraft representing virtually every chapter of general aviation’s storied history, the association said in a news release. The event celebrates “the value the general aviation industry has provided to our nation since 1939.”

The flight, leaving from Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland around 11:30 a.m. and scheduled for about noon, takes place over one of Washington’s most restricted flight zones,  Prohibited Area P-56 .

Spectators on the ground and online will watch the aircraft fly above the Lincoln Memorial, down Independence Avenue and past the Washington Monument.

“The idea to celebrate the many contributions of general aviation to our nation’s communities began over a year ago, and we’ve had countless meetings and planning sessions with officials from the FAA, TSA, and Secret Service for the route, airspace, aircraft, and pilots,” said AOPA Vice President of Airports and State Advocacy Mike Ginter in the release. “We greatly appreciate the support from these partner agencies and getting the final approval was great news. We’re ready to go!”

The aircraft, comprising 15 different “chapters,” will tell the story of general aviation in the United States, from the Golden Age, to World War II, the general aviation trainer era, vertical flight, backcountry flying, seaplanes, corporate and business aviation, technically advanced aircraft, homebuilt aircraft, airshow performers and other examples of general aviation aircraft that support public service missions.

The pilots were specifically selected to participate based on their aircraft and level of pilot qualification, and all aircraft will be inspected by the TSA, Secret Service, and FAA before departure, the release said. All pilots and crews were required to pass a security screening, and every detail of the flyover was carefully planned with the government agencies.

Super Bowl 2024 flyover: times, jet models...

T his year’s Super Bowl flyover is being performed by the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbird flight demonstration team. They’ll be soaring over Allegiant Stadium, where the Chiefs take on the 49ers on Sunday, just ahead of the 6.30 p.m. ET kick-off. And they won’t have had to travel far: they based out of Nellis Air Force Base in North Las Vegas, which is a 20-minute drive from where Chiefs take on the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Super Bowl LVIII flyover details

The Thunderbirds currently fly the General Dynamics F-16C ‘Viper’ , which has a top speed of 1,345 mph, though it won’t be doing that, with supersonic flight (above around 750 mph) banned over land in the U.S.

The F-16 is a all-weather multirole aircraft , and while it’s no longer purchased by the U.S. Air Force it is sold for export - a new one of the latest variants will cost you around $25 to $30 million, though improvements and add-ons can take that to north of $60 million.

There will be six jets in Sunday’s flyover, in the standard Thunderbird formation. They fly a classic four-plane diamond, accompanied by two solo planes.

No 1: Leading the diamond, flown by the team’s commander who will be Lt. Col. Nathan “Sheik” Malafa.

No 2: Diamond left wing, flown by Maj. Zachary “Zeke” Taylor.

No 3: Diamond right wing, flown by Maj. Tyler “Slasher” Clark.

No 4: Bottom of the diamond, in the slot, flown by Maj. Jake “Primo” Impellizerri.

No 5: Lead solo, flown by Maj. Eric “Miami” Tise.

No 6: Opposing solo, flown by Maj. Jeff “Simmer” Downey.

When is the flyover for Super Bowl 2024?

Super Bowl LVIII takes place on Sunday, February 11, 2024. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. ET, 3:30 p.m. PT. The Super Bowl flyover is timed to take place just at the end of the national anthem, right before the game starts.

“ The trickiest part is getting the timing just right,” Lt. Col. Eric Gorney told CBS News . “The first thing to remember is we’re going 400 mph. So we can’t just stop and hover… And the other tricky thing is that we have committed to the flyover. We have started flying in about a minute prior to the national anthem even starting.”

The history of the Super Bowl flyover

Super Bowl flyovers have been a staple of the pre-game ceremonies for the big show, dating back to the very first one. The tradition of a military flyover during the national anthem at the Super Bowl began in Super Bowl V in 1971, where four F-4 Phantoms from the US Air Force performed a flyover at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. Since then, the flyover has become a staple of the Super Bowl, with different branches of the military taking part in the flyover each year.

Over the years, a variety of aircraft have been used, including F-16 Fighting Falcons, A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, and B-2 Spirit stealth bombers , among others. The flyover is a nod to the military and serves as a tribute to the men and women in uniform who protect our country.

Last year saw history made as the US Navy flyover was piloted by an all-female team , celebrating 50 years of women aviators in the Navy.

Other jets around Las Vegas for Super Bowl weekend

In addition to the flyover, the skies over Nevada are expected to be pretty busy. Around 1,000 private planes are expected at Las Vegas area airports this weekend. In last year’s game in Glendale, Arizona, there were 562 business plane arrivals at airports for the occasion. The 2022 event in Los Angeles saw 752 arrivals, as per the business aviation tracker WingX.

The Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf Sin City tournament at Las Vegas Country Club - set to finish on Saturday - will only add to the congestion in the run-up to the Super Bowl.

Benjamin Leffel, an assistant professor of public policy sustainability at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas told The New York Times : “The emissions levels of a mega-event like this from air traffic, and the energy use is at least double in a day than it would be on average.”

A spokesperson for WingX said: “2023 set the record in terms of total outbound departures following a Super Bowl. So with it happening in Las Vegas coming, which is already a top bizjet hub, we would expect a very large post-event bizjet activity after this weekend.

“We’re seeing a fairly buoyant US demand for private jets in 2024. It’s not at the same highs we saw 24 months ago, but still up 10 per cent on pre-pandemic levels.”

The US Federal Aviation Authority has confirmed that it expects 3,500 additional take-offs and landings from February 7 to February 12, with 500 private jets in local airports in the area. In response to the influx of private planes, the FAA has improved measures to ensure the safety of the airspace for those travelling in and out. The FAA said: “General aviation pilots flying near Las Vegas from Feb. 7-12, 2024, must be aware of temporary flight restrictions, follow special air traffic procedures and comply with additional operational requirements that will be in effect for Super Bowl LVIII.”

Nasa’s dc-8 to fly low altitude over san jose, california, for final flight, nasa armstrong public affairs specialist.

NASA’s DC-8 aircraft will fly at low altitude over San Jose and surrounding areas during its final flight from NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, to Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.

After 37 years of successful airborne science missions, the DC-8 aircraft is retiring at Idaho State University, where it will be used to train future aircraft technicians by providing hands-on experience at the college’s Aircraft Maintenance Technology Program.  

Residents in the areas below will see and hear the aircraft as it flies to its new and final home.

Where: San Jose, Mountain View, California (and surrounding areas).

When: Wednesday, May 15 , between 11:00-11:30 AM.

Additional details: All flyovers are conducted at a safe altitude without harm to public, wildlife, or infrastructure. Jet aircraft are loud and those with sensitivity to loud noises should be aware of the flyover window.
