Flying Scotsman plans for 2024 announced

Michael Holden avatar

The National Railway Museum has announced plans for 60103 Flying Scotsman this year, after the contract with Riley and Son Ltd ended at the end of last year.

Flying Scotsman will spend the first part of 2024 on static display at the York museum, but will resume mainline tours later in the year.

From Friday 26th January until the summer, 60103 will be on display in the Flying Scotsman Story exhibition in York, after which, it will return to Shildon to go on public display.

A tender to appoint the next custodians for Flying Scotsman to allow the locomotive to operate on the mainline will be launched, and will be awarded in late Spring 2024.

The intention is that Flying Scotsman will remain mainline operational and will visit heritage railways from Autumn 2024.

Judith McNicol, Director of the National Railway Museum said: “After an amazing centenary year which has seen Flying Scotsman delight and inspire thousands of people, I can announce our plans to bring the world-famous locomotive to the National Railway Museum in York while we begin the search for its next custodian.

“Our intention is to keep Flying Scotsman main line operational and once the new custodian is appointed, we will create a calendar of activity that includes main line tours, visits to heritage railways and our museums.”

The tender to find Flying Scotsman's custodian will be open to all and published online here: https://in-tendhost.co.uk/sciencemuseumgroup .

Is ‘the Flying Scotsman” going to run in the summer of 2025 or has it remained in the Museum? I am in Australia and would like to place this ride as part of our time in Britian.

It is possible that the trains calendar may depend on the outcome of the court case with reference to the safety mechanism of railway carriages for mainline operations. WCR which hired the train out had permission to continue to run train tours with carriages as they are until next month pending a court appeal going through but this has been withdrawn meaning that they have currently had to cancel all tours pending the court case. Not sure how the case affects heritage line operations but i the ruling goes against the tour companies they will either have to refit their coaches or purchase some new ones which meet the requirements being introduced. This is likely to take time and money meaning that in the meantime the Flying Scotsmans operations on the mainline may be restricted which is beyond their control. With regards to the tendering, this may be a legal requirement since NRM receives public funding and has charitable status – they have to justify everything which they do even down to who they gives contracts to. As stated, Riley’s are able to put in a new tender

Allowing the contract with Riley’s to expire, means that it saves the NRM money which it can spend on the white elephant called Wonderlab…!!

I wonder why I suspect that Flying Scotsman may not run this year, if ever again. Not sure what NRM’s game is. If they were serious about running the loco they would have sorted out a contractor by now and have a running schedule. Makes sense to keep Rileys.

I agree that this fine loco love her or hate her she should go on for other generations to enjoy I ha e worked in her STEAmed her in my 21st birthday while she was atMarket Overton to many years ago to mention I have traveled the length and breadth of Britain with her during sir William mac Alpines time with her was involved taking her to Shildon in 1974 a. D helped prep her for the cavalcade along with matie Ray Towel and friends they were great times long missed but hopefully continued for all those that now maintaine her for the future

My wife and me was on the Edinburgh trip last year it’s was the best trip on a steam train we ever been on

After the mess the NRM got into with this engine and all the work that Riley and Co put into getting it back on the mainline surely to goodness it would make sense to allow them to continue.

It’s surprising the end of Riley’s contract wasn’t foreseen, thus allowing tenders for a new contract being sought months ago. P.S. agree with previous comment that the old lady is called Flying Scotsman, no “The” in the name! P.P.S. Riley’s have been doing a wonderful job!

Lovely to see her again. I worked on her in the 50s out of kings Cross. As a pantry boy 65 years ago

Great news to see the old lady being looked after and given the respect she deserves of something her age. I say if things arnt broken then why change them so leave it to Rileys & Son.

There are two flying Scotsmen. One is a Gresley A3 pacific called ‘Flying Scotsman’. The other was a service called ‘THE Flying Scotsman’ (King’s Cross to Edinburgh on the East Coast Main Line?) I dare say the former hauled the latter, on occasion, but the loco name was never called ‘The Flying Scotsman’. This could irtitate an irritable person 😄 (not me, obviously…)

Chris, you’ll note the press release is very faithful to this, and never once slips in a gratuitous ‘the’ 😊

Top day out hope to catch her later in year

Good news ,Glad to hear after 100 years the flying Scotsman will doing more tours around the UK ❤

The Flying Scotsman is an iconic national engineering treasure and must be kept operational and in service for future generations especially considering the lengths previous owners have gone to in order to keep the locomotive running. In the scheme of things the costs are reasonable. We don’t know why Riley’s are not carrying on but Flying Scotsman deserves the skills of Riley’s who have done a superb job. My young grandson loves Flying Scotsman and we have seen her running through Kent, at the NRM last September and were lucky enough to ride on the train on the Bluebell Railway in August.

Riley’s contract came to an end. Nothing more than that, so they could tender for the new contract. Almost certainly the NRM’s finance people wouldn’t allow a simple contract extension, hence the retendering. One might ask why the contracts people couldn’t arrange things so that there was no gap…

We saw the Flying Scotsman at Shildon on 21st December 2023. Myself, Partner and 3 children really enjoyed the once in a lifetime experience to go aboard and being on the footplate

So pleased to hear that the flying Scotsman is still a big part of our heritage my dad had the privilege of firing her back in 1969 through mansfield although he is ko longer with us we are all very proud of him

Saw Flying Scotsman when it visited Severn Valley Railway, left a big imprint on my heart.

I live right next to the mainline at Finsbury Park. I can see the Flying Scotsman from the bridge.when she’s coming up from Kings Cross. I’m so excited that she will be back on track soon.

I like other will me so glad, to see her continuing to steam and Run, she may be an old Lady, who had lenth Cosmetic & major Surgery, but she is a joy to see. Was looky enough to see her while she was on Private Hire threw Mc Alpine. It was Great to get chance to get on the foot plate @ Old Glenparva Station Leicester. Long may she continue to steam

Looky enough, as in taking a look, or Lucky as in ‘fortunate’? Threw McAlpine? Who threw him or was it through McAlpine that Flying Scotsman is still with us today?

I haven’t ever seen flying Scotsmen in Person which is sad. But i’m glad to know that it will still be continuing tours and displays

So glad The Flying Scotsman will still be part of our heritage. I used to travel on her from Kings Cross to Edinburgh when I was a little girl. Oh the joys of being invited onto the footplate and being inside. So iconic to me and millions of others.

0330 440 3999, monday - friday 9am to 5pm, flying scotsman coach breaks 2024, flying scotsman trips by coach.

Flying Scotsman

After a major overhaul in 2022, the newly-restored Flying Scotman is ready for action.  2023 marked the centenary year for this iconic steam locomotive and there were a series of events to celebrate.

Make sure you don't miss the chance to see the one of fastest steam trains in action with a wonderful short break.

If you wish to pre-register, the click  here for 2024 coach tours.

Most steam train trips include coach travel, a hotel stay and a journey behind the Scotsman  on a heritage railway.

History of the Steam Train

The legendary  Flying Scotsman train  has been back on the rails since 2016, after it's £4.2 million refurbishment.

Originally built in Doncaster, the Scotsman launched in 1923 and was one of the most powerful locomotives used on the Railway.

The locomotive continued to achieve a number of firsts throughout its career. Officially the first locomotive in the UK to clock 100mph on a special test run. It also ran the first ever non-stop service from London to Edinburgh with a journey time of just eight hours. Another more recent record obtained, is the oldest mainline working locomotive on Britain's tracks.

During the Second World War the iconic green paint was repainted black, which was a common theme with all railway stock. It was retired from service by the British Rail in 1963, as steam engines were becoming old-fashioned. After retirement, the train changed ownership several times. The locomotive was also taken to the United States of America and Australia before returning back to the UK.

Since it was officially launched to the public again in 2016, the Flying Scotsman has been touring around the UK and appearing at the National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shilton. This popular locomotive has earned itself a generation of Scotsman fans.

Flying Scotsman steaming away from the camera

Flying Scotsman trips in 2024

After a successful and busy centenary year in 2023, Flying Scotsman ‘s immediate future was unclear at the start of this year. Now we have more news.

Flying Scotsman   is owned by the National Railway Museum (NRM). Up until Dec 2023 when the contract ended, she was operated and maintained by Riley & Son (E) Ltd.

In early December, the NRM issued a rather unrevealing statement saying that they were carefully considering Flying Scotsman ‘s future, and will put the care & operation contract out to tender. Meanwhile, since late January she has been on static display at the National Railway Museum in York. She will remain there until an un-specified date in the summer when she will move to the  Locomotion museum  in Shildon.

UPDATE – 8/03/2024 The search for a new custodian/operator for Flying Scotsman has begun.

The Science Museum Group (National Railway Museum’s parent) has just published an Invitation to Tender (ITT). The successful bidder will be contracted to run Flying Scotsman for 7½ years from 3 June 2024 until 31 January 2032. Tender responses will be evaluated on both price and quality and scored on a series of criteria including previous experience, technical ability, public engagement, staffing, project management and sustainability.

Judith McNicol, Director of the National Railway Museum, says: “We will create a public engagement calendar that includes main line excursions, heritage railway visits and display at the National Railway Museum and Locomotion.” However the tender includes an undisclosed limit on annual mileage to ensure a balance between operational requirements and conservation.

So, Flying Scotsman’s excursions programme, which we still expect to start in the autumn, will be markedly less busy than it was last year and in previous years.

As soon as a schedule is published, I’ll post it, with updates, here as usual.

Flying Scotsman – the historic locomotive

Built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works, Flying Scotsman was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class – the most powerful locomotives used by the railway. She was quickly used by LNER for their long-distance express services, notably on the long-running (62 yrs) daily 10.00am London to Edinburgh ‘Flying Scotsman’ train service after which she was named.

She still holds two world records: the longest non-stop run at 441 miles (8 Aug 1989 in Australia), and the first steam locomotive officially authenticated at reaching 100 miles per hour (30 Nov 1934 in the UK).

The public’s enthusiasm and interest in Flying Scotsman remains unabated. NRM says that 51,751 people visited the NRM to see her during October half term and more than 37,500 came to see Flying Scotsman in light steam at Locomotion over Christmas. Everyone will be anticipating her return to the main line as soon as possible.

Flying Scotsman   is owned by the National Railway Museum ( Review here ) and operated and maintained by Riley & Son (E) Ltd.

The Flying Scotsman numbers game…

It’s easy to get confused over the identity of the ‘Flying Scotsman’  because she is sometimes referred to by different engine numbers.

When she came out of the Doncaster Works on 24th Feb 1923, she was Engine No. 1472.

Within a year she was re-numbered No. 4472 , given the name ‘Flying Scotsman’, and introduced to the public at the 1924 British Empire Exhibition.

Then, in 1948, when the independent rail companies were nationalised and merged into British Railways, ‘Flying Scotsman’  became No. 60103 .

* RTC are operating over 50 mainline steam journeys between now and October 2024 using other historic steam locomotives.

For example: the 1927-built 46115 Scots Guardsmen often hauls RTC trains across the Settle & Carlisle Line.  At 96 years old, Scots Guardsman is only a few years behind Flying Scotsman and has its own unique history as the star of the 1936 GPO film ‘Night Mail’.

The 1938-built locomotive Princess Coronation Class Pacific 46233 Duchess of Sutherland will also work a number of RTC’s trains, as will 34067 Tangmere , 35028 Clan Line , 35018 British India Line and the Black 5 No. 44932.

Thanks for this update, Alastair. I’d be very keen to know if there were to be any trips in September/October 2024. Sally, Melbourne Australia. March 2024

Hi Sally, yes I’ll post any details of autumn trips as soon as I hear of any 🙂

I would really like to be informed when and if the Flying scotsman is available to ride -many thanks

It will probably not be until the autumn, Yvonne. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any announcements.

I Would like to know when the flying Scotsman steam train will be going to Edinburgh Please let me know by email Thanks Daphne sheldrake

Sorry Daphne, No need for an email. There are no scheduled trips to Edinburgh that I am aware of. FS is on static display at the NRM in York till the summer. Maybe later this year there will be some trips, but none have been announced yet.

Us the Svotmam stopping over in Scotla d in May so we can go and.see her?? We have family over from Australia

Hi Vyonne. It’s hard to say where Flying Scotsman will be in May. She’s on static display at the National Railway Museum in York at the moment, and will move to Locomotion at Shildon ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/qJu76BXMpH1RTMNEA ) in “the summer”. Until there’s a further update, we just don’t know when “the summer” starts.

I am quite surprised that the NRM have not contacted Ian Riley as he saved them when their restoration of Scotsman went seriously wrong and three lorryloads of Scotsman arrived at his loco works at Heywood for him and.his engineers to sort out. Common courtesy seems to have disappeared even withcom 20024 the NRM.

It does seem odd.

Is the flying scotsman to visit Scotland again if so when and where.

Good questions. We are all waiting for answers 🙂

Flying Scotsman plans for 2024 announced

Alex Bestwick

The National Railway Museum has announced that, after a busy centenary year in 2023, Flying Scotsman will start 2024 on static display at the museum in York.

flying scotsman day trips 2024

After travelling 10,000 miles across the UK as part of its centenary celebrations, Flying Scotsman will return to the National Railway Museum for the first part of 2024, before resuming rail tours later in the year.

The locomotive will be displayed in the Flying Scotsman Story exhibition at the York-based museum from Friday 26 January until the summer.

flying scotsman day trips 2024

Then Flying Scotsman will travel to Locomotion in Shildon, where it will go on public display.

A competitive tender to appoint the next custodian for Flying Scotsman to operate and maintain the locomotive will launch with an Invitation to Tender (ITT) published online in the coming weeks.

The tender is expected to be awarded in late spring 2024, and once the custodian is appointed, Flying Scotsman will resume a programme of rail tours in the autumn.

flying scotsman day trips 2024

Judith McNicol, Director of the National Railway Museum said: “After an amazing centenary year which has seen Flying Scotsman delight and inspire thousands of people, I can announce our plans to bring the world-famous locomotive to the National Railway Museum in York while we begin the search for its next custodian.

“Our intention is to keep Flying Scotsman main line operational and once the new custodian is appointed, we will create a calendar of activity that includes main line tours, visits to heritage railways and our museums.”

The tender to find Flying Scotsman’s custodian will be open to all and published online here: https://in-tendhost.co.uk/sciencemuseumgroup .

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Ryan Day ponder their next move during their World Snooker Championship last-16 match.

Ronnie O’Sullivan closes on last-eight spot after Maguire beats Murphy

  • O’Sullivan leads Ryan Day 10-6 after two sessions of last-16 clash
  • Maguire holds off late Murphy fightback to secure 13-9 victory

Ronnie O’Sullivan opened up a 10-6 lead over Ryan Day to move within three frames of another World Snooker Championship quarter-final appearance.

O’Sullivan, aiming for a record-breaking eighth Crucible success, built on a 5-3 first-session lead by making Day pay for a succession of missed chances.

A missed yellow from Day proved costly as O’Sullivan made an 82 clearance and, although the Welshman replied by winning a scruffy frame, the seven-time world champion did not have to get out of second gear to dominate.

The Rocket reached the break 8-4 ahead as Day’s carelessness was further punished with breaks of 65 and 89. The pattern remained the same after the interval as O’Sullivan cashed in on more mistakes with frame-winning breaks of 56 and 96.

But Day – who has not beaten O’Sullivan since 2011 – responded superbly with efforts of 77 and 75 to keep his faint hopes alive when the action resumes on Monday afternoon.

Stephen Maguire secured his spot in the last eight by beating Shaun Murphy 13-9. The pair have feuded for two decades after an incident in which Maguire was penalised a frame for forgetting his chalk and the Scot held off a late fightback from Murphy to seal victory.

He resumed on Sunday morning with a 10-6 overnight lead and continued his quest to reach the quarter-finals with a break of 68 before Murphy pulled a frame back. Maguire then moved within one frame of victory but Murphy continued to battle, a 67 break earning him the following frame before he took the first after the mid-session interval to trail by three.

However, Maguire sealed victory in style, hitting the only century of the match with a 127 to set up a quarter-final meeting with David Gilbert.

Maguire told the World Snooker Tour website: “[Murphy] looked like he was comfortable in that session, so I was starting to get geared up for a comeback and a close finish. Once I got my chance, I finished pretty well there.

“Me and Dave [Gilbert] get on and we’ve grown up with each other for the best part of 30 years. He is a great player. He’s not had a great season by his standards. I’m probably the same, so we are coming into a good game at the right time.

“The quarter-finals are the pressure matches. I’ve won a couple and lost a couple. It is a match you don’t want to lose in because that arena changes and it does become the best in the world with the one table.”

During Saturday’s session Murphy fist-pumped after winning a frame and Maguire admitted it provided him with some motivation. “Shaun made a mistake. He knows me well enough and I get down on myself,” Maguire said. “He won a frame I should’ve won and I was sitting there hating myself when the fist-pump came out and I thought ‘You’re having it’, and all my attention went on that.

“It was satisfying beating a player as good as Shaun is in the last 16 of the world championship.”

Mark Allen edged 9-7 ahead in his last-16 meeting with John Higgins in a tight encounter. After an even start, back-to-back wins in the 11th and 12th frames put Higgins 7-5 in front, but Allen then took control by winning the next four frames on the bounce – which included a 94 break – to lead by two. They will play to a finish on Monday evening.

Stuart Bingham fended off Jack Lisowski ’s comeback to also take a 9-7 lead into Monday’s session. Bingham extended his lead to 6-3 after taking the ninth frame, but Lisowski responded by taking the next three to claw his way back into contention. However, Bingham, the world champion in 2015, finished strongly to take a two-frame advantage into the final session.

Kyren Wilson looked in fine form as he built a 10-6 lead over the Crucible debutant Joe O’Connor . Wilson has had a poor season and slipped to world No 12, but extended his 6-2 overnight lead to leave him in a strong position to reach a quarter-final against Allen or Higgins.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

flying scotsman day trips 2024

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

flying scotsman day trips 2024

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

Via Vladimir

flying scotsman day trips 2024

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

flying scotsman day trips 2024

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

flying scotsman day trips 2024

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

3 day stop en route to Moscow - where would you go?

Hi everyone,

I am tentatively planning to join my parents who are visiting our relatives in Russia either in late July or in August. What really sparked my interest in this trip (aside from seeing family and introducing my husband to them, of course) was using this as an excuse for a quick stop elsewhere in Europe. I was thinking that since there are no direct flights from Seattle to Moscow anymore, my husband and I could start the trip by flying to a European destination, staying there for 3-4 days (not including travel days), and then continuing to Russia.

So far, my list of potential destinations includes: Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, London, and Prague. These are listed in my current order of preference, and it should be noted that we have already been to London and Prague. We are in our late 20s, more city oriented (but don't mind a day trip to the countryside), and mostly interested in live music, architecture, museums, markets, as well as tasting plenty of local food and beer.

If you were to recommend spending a few days in one of these cities, which would you choose? Or do you have any other suggestions with easy-ish transfer to Moscow (no more than 1 layover)? Thanks in advance!

I recommend Paris based on your preferences especially if you have never been there. I was there for the 3rd time last September and never tired of it. I am sure many will agree! Wherever you decide will be awesome. It is Europe after all!!

We have lived in London, Paris and Prague and I would recommend Prague for the live music, architecture (the city is like an art museum), markets, museums, great good, and its unique look and history. On the other hand, why not try St. Petersburg, Russia since you already have permission to enter the country? It is a gorgeous city and the Hermitage is even better than the Louvre (I love both). This is an easy transfer to Moscow for sure.

Out of your 5 cities there are direct flights from Seattle to London and Paris. You already have been to London. Your choice is easy - Paris. My educated guess is that there is a direct flight from Paris to Moscow.

Direct Flight Seattle Stockholm 1 day, take night ferry to Helsinki 1 day, take train to St Petersburg 1 day...fly, bus or train to Moscow.

If you've never been, you should go to Paris!

I've been to the places you listed, and while I'm glad to have seen all of them, I regret not going to Prague sooner. In my many years of travel, it exceeded my expectations - along with the other places in Czech Republic. I think our River Cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg had a flight via either Copenhagen or Stockholm, both of which would be great visits.

Be aware of European vacations in August.

Kathleen has really good idea. Unfortunately there is no direct flight to Stockholm from Seattle. But you can do it with one change. That ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki is exciting. Then train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. I would not recommend bus from S.P. to Moscow. It takes too long. Take fast train Sapsan (about 4 hours). It is expensive but worth it. Other trains take 8 to 10 hours. In that case take overnight sleeping compartment but it is not much cheaper than Sapsan. This could be your alternative to Paris.

In July, my first choice would be Stockholm. The Swedish summer is just beautiful. There is lots to do in Stockholm. The Vasa Museum is one of a kind. The Stadshuset (where the Nobel Prize is awarded) has a great tour. Good food markets are at Hötorget's Saluhallen (modern, ethnic, less expensive) and Östermalms Saluhallen (traditional, more expensive, and beautiful). There are a number of music venues. The only downside is that beer is expensive. If you take the ferry to Helsinki, you will find cheap beer on the ferry.

You could fly to Stockholm and then fly to Moscow OR overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. Spend the day there (leave luggage at locker in train station before Taking the overnight Ferry (St Peter Line) to St Petersburg. The St Peter Line goes every other day). Spend a couple of nights there before taking the train to Moscow.

Last summer, I traveled Helsinki - St Petersburg - Helsinki - Stockholm using the ferries, so feel free to PM me if you have questions. I also lived in Stockholm for a couple of years, so am a bit biased :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! For the record, while I would love to visit St. Petersburg (I feel like a bad Russian person having never been there), I don't think it's the right fit for this particular trip, since the whole idea is to take advantage of there being no direct flights to Russia and making an extended layover somewhere in Europe.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised at the recommendations for Stockholm/Helsinki/St. Petersburg itinerary, given this forum's propensity to advise against such fast-paced trips! It actually sounds amazing, but I think I'd prefer to stretch that trip into at least a couple of days in each place :)

I am definitely being swayed in the direction of Paris at the moment! Neither of us ever had a strong interest in specifically visiting Paris, but with direct flights to/from Moscow, this seems like the perfect opportunity to check it out and maybe fall in love with it the way everyone else seems to be! Although I am still kind of attached to the idea of checking out Dublin or having the excuse to drag my husband back to London so soon after our last trip.

Top Day Trips from Moscow

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Entertainment , Travel , Video

Moscow , the sprawling historical, economic and cultural capital of Russia, home to 12 million people and countless museums, galleries, restaurants and parks, is certainly seeing a lot of action this summer.

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, over 1 million fans from across the globe have poured into this iconic city, which is hosting a grand total of 12 World Cup matches this summer. Although there’s never been a better time to be in Moscow, the intense crowds and, of course, the infamous summer heat waves, can sometimes be a little too much.

The Russian capital is well connected to a huge variety of national parks, cities, villages and historic sites, meaning you’ve got no shortage of amazing options to escape the city and soak up the best of Russian culture. Here’s a round-up of the best day trips to take from Moscow.

The Archangelskoye Estate

Only an hour away on the train from central Moscow, the sprawling Archangelskoye is a heart-stopping masterpiece of old Russian splendour. Originally belonging to the notorious Golitsyn dynasty, this massive estate is one of the best-preserved showcases of Russian neoclassical architecture in the world, with the ornately curated gardens being home to multiple mansions, each with their own original and eclectic design.

As well as drinking in the beautiful surroundings in this serene oasis, the estate also plays host to many of Russia’s most acclaimed music festivals, so make sure to keep tabs on what’s on this summer.

If you’re looking for a little bit of city life without the manic hustle of Moscow, hop on the train for 90 minutes and you’ll find yourself in the vibrant city of Saransk , the historic capital of the Republic of Mordovia.

Long known for its vibrant cultural scene, you should make sure to hit up the Maly Theatre and of course, the official State Puppet Theatre, which has a long tradition of performing daring and hilarious puppet satires. You may even find yourself there with the World Cup, as this small city has hosted eight teams there this summer, including Portugal – a team who topped their group and progressed as 25/1 outsiders according to the bookmaker Betway .

The Mordovia Arena stadium, which is hosting all the games, is worth a visit in itself, given the surreal design and monumental scale of this sparkling new stadium. Also make sure to check out the imposing Regional Museum, just a stone’s throw away from the train station, to learn more about this tiny and tortured republic, as well as sampling the fare at the surprisingly good museum cafe.

This unique and ancient little town , just a few miles outside of Moscow (although it has no train station, you can get the train to nearby Vladimir and use public transport), is often described as somewhere completely untouched by time.

It is the physical embodiment of the mythical and much-idealized Russian vision of simple country life, a small village full of dirt roads, friendly locals and beautiful old churches. The town is also well-known for the local mead produced there, a highly alcoholic drink made of honey, so make sure to sample the local wares and get a little buzz going before you hit up the 13th-century monastery by the main river.

This is definitely the place to go if you want to get away from the international bubble of Moscow and experience a little bit of traditional Russia, and prices here are naturally several times lower for just about everything.

Gorki Leninskie

You can’t do Russia without exploring some of the Soviet history which left a permanent mark on the country and the world, and the best place to do so is the Gorki Lenenskie.

Just under an hour away from Moscow by train, this estate was where the Soviet leader Lenin lived out his final years, and it’s where you’ll find some striking examples of Soviet architecture , as well as a painstakingly detailed museum documenting this influential figure’s life, loves, achievements and dramas.

Most of the exhibits are in Russian, but this is still an important place to go to get a better picture of the monumental upheavals that Russia has experienced in the last century.
