A totally tasty Transcona food guide
Like so many other Ukranian Canadians in Winnipeg, I have family ties to Transcona: My parents, grandparents and their parents grew up on the blocks surrounding Transcona's original downtown, an area with large trees, a smattering of shops and a small-town feel. In fact, Transcona was a small town, at least until 1961 when it became its own city before amalgamating with the City of Winnipeg in 1972.
I have been happily spending time in Transcona for close to 30 years, hitting up the area's eateries both new and old. Here you'll find babas boiling perogies, a Syrian food stand, and some of the best local burritos.
For the purpose of this article, restaurants have been split into Transcona East and Transcona West with Plessis Road dividing the two.
***
Transcona East
Dal's Restaurant and Lounge 701 Regent Ave. W.
A family restaurant that's been in business for more than 25 years, Dal's is great for both takeout (try the thin crust pizza, pictured in header) and dine-in (the homemade dressing on the Greek salad is creamy and delicious and its recipe is totally top-secret). Customers also rave about the fried chicken, hot turkey sandwich and Dal's burger.
Sevala’s Ukrainian Deli 126 Victoria Ave. W.
Started by a Ukrainian baba out of her two-car garage 35 years ago, Sevala's has grown into the takeout spot for perogies, cabbage rolls, meatballs and other Ukrainian delights. It's even been reported that at one point, Sevala's was turning out a million perogies and cabbage rolls on an annual basis. In an interview with the Winnipeg Free Press , owner Del Demchuk (his mother started Sevala's in 1985) said that customers will often phone the store a few days after Christmas already placing orders for next year's Christmas Eve. And when the pandemic hit last February, customers stockpiled perogies alongside toilet paper and soap.
Sevala's is where my family gets all our perogies for holidays and gatherings. I'm also a fan of the perogy bites—stick to the classic potato & cheddar cheese, or try the added jalapeño for some spice. The deli's current location is also home to the Life Goddess mural by artist Mike Johnston, named the 2018 Mural of the Year by Murals of Winnipeg.
Maggi's 102 Victoria Ave. E.
After longtime takeout stand Whistle Pig Drive-Inn closed up shop in 2018 (those fries!) it was replaced by Maggi's, an incredible Syrian eatery owned by a refugee family and offering dishes including shawarma, kebabs, hummus platters, Syrian salad (fresh and flavourful), fries and burgers. The restaurant is open seasonally (typically from April to November) with a handful of picnic tables out front to enjoy your meal.
Little Bones Wings 123 Regent Ave. W.
Winnipeg's popular chicken wing food truck has a permanent location below the historic Royal George Hotel where it serves more than 40 flavours of wings including the Alfred (Alfredo sauce, fresh parmesan), spaghetti wings (spaghetti sauce, herbs, parmesan) and a.n.d.e (a near-death experience that includes '3rd degree' hot sauce, ground chili flakes and habanero peppers), among classics like lemon pepper and buffalo. The menu also includes salads, wraps, quesadillas, burgers and more.
L’Arche Tova Café 119 Regent Ave. W.
This sunny breakfast spot has excellent food specials, tasty coffee and a great business model providing meaningful employment to people living with disabilities. Table space is limited, especially on weekends. Be sure to try their cinnamon buns, as they're made in house.
Quinlan’s Deli/Café 101 Regent Ave. W.
Named after Frank Quinlan, who organized and supervised the construction of the Transcona Shops before enlisting for service in the First World War, Quinlan's opened on the corner of Regent Avenue and Day Street in November 2019. The deli focuses on fresh, housemade dishes like hearty salads, stacked sandwiches and plates of pasta, and is open for lunch and dinner.
Little Pizza Heaven opened a takeout spot at 101 Regent Avenue East, and one of the city's longest-standing seasonal Dairy Queen stands draws big crowds in the summer at 100 Victoria Avenue East.
Transcona West
Nuburger 1596 Regent Ave. W.
One of the popular gourmet burger joint's busiest locations is on Regent Avenue, just east of Lagimodière Boulevard. Its Le Burger Week entry for the 2020 competition was one of the best—a handmade pretzel bun from Gunn’s Bakery topped with honey chili pepper bacon, pounded cheddar cheese spread, sliced cucumber and kale and arugula tossed in a tahini parmesan dressing.
Gaijin Izakaya 1575 Regent Ave W.
Chef Ed Lam of Yujiro's newest concept sits in an unassuming strip mall on Regent Avenue, but the eatery itself is anything but bland. Here, Tokyo-style snacks and small plates are offered alongside a selection of ramen , noodles and fusion dishes. Japanese whisky, sake-based cocktails and Japanese beers are also on offer.
RnR Family Restaurants 1615 Regent Ave W.
When the last three Perkins locations in the city closed in 2020, a local ownership group decided to take over, renaming the locations RnR (Rest n' Relax). Branching out from the familiar Perkins breakfast experience, RnR has added both vegetarian and gluten-free items to the menu along with local dishes like a honey dill chicken sandwich, poutine and a Ukrainian breakfast option. The owners have also vowed to source products locally when possible, including using Niverville’s Negash Coffee.
Burrito Splendido 1570 Regent Ave W.
This locally owned, operated and conceptualized burrito chain has one of five locations on Regent Avenue. The eatery offers a ton of things to love—its tortillas are pressed fresh in house using 100 per cent Manitoba produced flour, the adobo chicken (Granny's Chicken), vegetables (Peak of the Market), fish tacos (Manitoba whitefish) and pork are all locally sourced, cans of Winnipeg craft beer are available and the entire menu is free from deep-fried dishes. Pro tip: don't skip the lime-cilantro-cumin Mexi slaw.

Foodtrip Kitchen
About the Restaurant
Foodtrip Cloud Kitchen is an extension of the popular Foodtrip Market where there are different food brands that you can get in one place and delivery.
Owner - Lourdes Federis is the founder and organizer of Food Trip Festival - The biggest Filipino Food Festival in Manitoba since 2017. It is a two-day festival attracting top industry professionals, restaurateurs, chefs and all food aficionados mostly Filipinos.
Our mission is simple: create a legitimate platform for talented, independent street food businesses; improve the quality of food served on Winnipeg’s streets; and create delicious and fun experiences for everyone!
Due to the pandemic this year, we have to cancel all Food Trip markets along with other festivals and markets. In order to continue to support small food entrepreneurs, we brought together 4 selected Food Trip vendors at a single location in 1045 St. James St., Wpg. Since our opening in May 1, we have successfully operating as a shared kitchen restaurant and able to offer our customers the option to mix and match their favourite Food Trip favourites through dine-in, pick up and delivery.
Through this, we are able to bridge the gap between the demand of our users and the selection of food options, as well as lower the cost that the merchants spend on rental costs.
Foodtrip Kitchen is the first single-kitchen concept of its food market service which aims to help food entrepreneurs start a sustainable, scalable and successful business for a low cost!

The Five Best Transcona Restaurants
As someone born and raised in Transcona and a food lover, I know a thing or two about the restaurants in Transcona. With Transcona having such a large footprint, there are so many delicious restaurants to choose from. As it continues to grow, the number of restaurants has also increased. With Winnipeg being such a diverse city, there is undoubtedly a restaurant that meets all tastes. To be fair to all restaurants in Transcona, this is only my opinion, and so many more deserve to be here as well.
Here Are My Favourite Transcona Restaurants
Dal's restaurant & lounge.
My best friend lived across the street from Dal's, so it was our go-to restaurant for over a decade. We would often eat there before heading out for the night. Dal's started as a small take-out restaurant expanded its space, and became a family-oriented, sit-down restaurant. There are two must-try menu items at Dal's. 1. Winnipeg is home to the Fatboy burger, and Dal's makes one of the best. If you're still getting familiar with the Fatboy, it's a burger with a chilli sauce. It takes hamburgers to a whole new level. 2. Pizza with side bacon. Bacon makes everything better, and using real bacon slices on a pizza is hard to beat.
L'Arche Tova Café
L'Arche Tova Café is a newer restaurant in Transcona that has been making waves. It has quickly become a Transcona favourite, mine as well! They are open until 2 PM and serve all-day breakfast. The service and atmosphere here are always so enjoyable. I recommend the Denver Sandwich. The ham in it is juicy and delicious. But don't just stop there; their menu has many tasty breakfast items. Grab some cinnamon buns on your way out; they are some of the best in the city.
Mr. Calzone
Mar. Calzone is another new addition to Transcona located on Regent Ave. They have calzones, pizza, shawarma and even hamburgers. I can't speak for all their items, but I can comment on the calzones; they are scrumptious. When I order calzones from a restaurant, they aren't very appealing and are often greasy. This is not the case with Mr. Calzone. The calzones have a nice dough with a pleasant texture. The chicken calzone is my go-to. The chicken is always fresh, moist, and packed in the calzone. It has reasonable prices, so I recommend you check it out.
Little Bones Wings
Little Bones Wings has been in Transcona for several years now. Chicken wings became popular years ago, and quite a few restaurants specializing in wings popped up. Prices went up quite a bit over the years due to popularity and overall grocery prices, and many of the wing restaurants went out of business. Little Bones has stood the test of time and is now a staple in the basement of the Royal George on Regent Ave.
There isn't much to say about Little Bones other than they simply make great wings. The chicken wings are full of meat, yet crispy, and they have every flavour imaginable. They have flavours with no spice, up to very spicy, so find one you like and try. Little Bones also serves alcohol at their location, which is excellent, as chicken wings always go well with a cold beer!
For several decades, the Whistle Pig made its home next to Dairy Queen in the middle of Transcona. It was considered a Transcona staple. Unfortunately, they shut down years ago, and no one was sure who would take the old space. A Syrian family decided to take the risk and serve home-cooked Syrian food. The risk paid off because their food is terrific. You will want to visit Maggi's if you enjoy Middle Eastern foods like shwarma. I usually get the chicken shwarma; the flavours come together perfectly. Sometimes, it can get messy because of the sauce, but that's the price for an amazing Syrian meal.
If you live in Transcona , I recommend you check out these restaurants. As more restaurants open in Transcona, I hope to add more to this list. You can try these restaurants regularly if you're lucky enough to live in Transcona!

“Best Chinese in transcona” Review of Tasty Chinese Cuisine
FINALLY after searching high and low I have finally found good Chinese in transcona. I highly recommend the deluxe wonton soup, beef Shanghai noodles, pan fried shrimp, and black bean beef. Unfortunately they don’t have Chinese broccoli or bok Choy on their menu, something I haven’t yet been able to find in transcona. Anyway, highly recommend!!

I am very impressed with the quality, quantity, and price of Tasty’s food. We have tried all of the Chinese restaurants in transcona (for take out) and Tastys is now our go to. I would have to disagree with the comment that they are not consistent as I feel they are. My only complaint is regarding the sesame chicken. To our family it didn’t fit the description it tasted more like chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce. However still tasty. Overall we are happy with this restaurant and will continue to order from here.
Recommend the "Dinner for 2" menu choice. Fair amount of food for only $26. Our server was very nice. On the negative side...no beverages listed on the menu....and surprisingly, no washrooms available.
Great food for the price. My staff ordered from here for work. Nice and fresh hot and very tasty. recommend this resturant
Best Chinese food in Winnipeg. What great tasting variety of Chinese Dishes. Fast fresh and large value priced portions. Strongly recommend a lunch buffet it’s brought out fresh and hot and small portions into the buffet with amazing quality and very tasty. For one of best tasting and one of the most affordable buffet experiences ever. They did a core is out dated in the restaurant however it’s clean and the food is very tasty just like the name says.

Do You Recall These Classic Kitchen Cookware Items? Take a Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane
Posted: May 15, 2024 | Last updated: May 15, 2024
The kitchen, known as the heart of the home, has undergone a transformation with the introduction of modern tools and gadgets that have elevated cooking to both an art and a science. Despite the prevalence of high-tech appliances in today’s kitchens, there is a certain nostalgic appeal associated with vintage kitchen tools. These relics from the past not only showcase the evolution of culinary practices but also serve as a reminder of the simplicity and creativity of earlier eras. Take a trip through 40 vintage kitchen tools, some of which are no longer in use, while others have evolved in design but continue to play a vital role in our kitchens today.
In older kitchens, the bread box was a vital tool for maintaining the freshness of bread. It created a cool and dry atmosphere that helped the bread last longer. During a time when bread was a mainstay in daily diets, the bread box played a key role in household organization. The different materials and designs of bread boxes showcased the importance placed on keeping baked goods fresh and tasty.
Oil Lamp Cooker
The oil lamp cooker was a small, portable contraption utilized for simmering food or maintaining its temperature, showcasing the innovativeness in addressing the constraints of that era. It acted as a token of the inventiveness needed in culinary practices prior to the prevalence of contemporary kitchen gadgets. This apparatus underscores the cleverness entailed in devising practical cooking remedies with scarce supplies.
Egg Separator
The egg separator is a handy tool that makes it easy to separate egg whites from yolks, making ingredient preparation much simpler. This tool was created to address the need for precision in the kitchen, where specialized tools are becoming more common to tackle specific culinary tasks. The egg separator is particularly useful for recipes that call for separate egg components, ensuring accuracy in baking and cooking, and ultimately improving the quality and consistency of dishes.
Preserving Jar
Preserving jars were essential for canning, enabling families to enjoy fresh produce all year long. These jars symbolized self-reliance and planning, guaranteeing that the fruits of one season could be enjoyed in the next. The tradition of preserving highlights the ingenuity and thoughtfulness that went into preserving and storing food for later consumption.
The icebox, a precursor to modern refrigeration, was a marvel of its time, keeping perishables cool with blocks of ice. It required regular replenishment from the iceman, making it a centerpiece of community interdependence and a symbol of the era’s food preservation methods. The icebox reminds us of the lengths to which people went to keep food fresh before the advent of electric refrigeration.
Cherry Pitter
The cherry pitter revolutionized the process of preparing cherries for cooking or snacking, making it much easier to remove pits. This innovative kitchen gadget exemplifies the trend towards simplifying preparation tasks, enabling people to savor fresh fruits in their meals and desserts with greater ease. By striking a balance between convenience and maintaining food quality, the cherry pitter enhances the enjoyment of the natural flavors of each season’s bounty.
The pie bird is a practical and whimsical tool that is placed in the center of pies to vent steam. Made of ceramic, this tool prevents overflow during baking, helping to keep crusts crisp. The pie bird is a charming example of how kitchen tools can blend form and function, adding a touch of whimsy to the baking process.
