Not Quite as Advertised and Promoted online and on Facebook

As a current travel agent with Gateway Travel in Indiana. I see a lot of posts on the Gateway Travel Facebook page and their website listing they provide in house, comprehensive travel agent training especially for new agents to the industry. Supposedly we have more than 40, current in-house, high quality training videos to help us learn to be comprehensive, quality travel agents and they offer all kinds of assistance to help is build long term relationships with our clients. Specifically, exclusive training that will help us be the best, well versed, professional booking agents for our clients. But in 2-1/2 months with Gateway Travel. I cannot find any of these in house 40+ training videos, training materials or any of the advertised, promoted, exclusive training listed on Gateway Travels website or social media pages to help set us apart as Gateway Travel Agents. This is not what I signed up for and pay a monthly fee for. I still have no idea what I am doing, how to find what clients ask me for or how to meet and exceed their expectations or save them money as their travel advisor compared to what they can book for themselves online. I had no idea this would be so difficult, confusing and frustrating with Gateway Travel : (

Gateway Travel Plaza

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Clean, very Texas. Cowboy decor and lots of wood. Lots of food choices and souvenirs. Has a Dunkin Donuts.

Clean and well stocked. Fair prices for snacks. Avoid the Dunkin/Baskin Robbins though, careless staff in there.

The travel center has everything you need when you stop on the road during a long drive. Clean restrooms, reasonable price gasoline, munchies and drinks.

We travel I20 a couple of times a month. This is our first time to stop here. Easy on and off. Store has a nice selection of food, snacks, and souvenirs. There is a Wendy's inside. Friendly staff. We will stop here in the future.

I have driven cross country numerous times with my family and this is the best rest stop I have ever encountered. Lots of different foods to choose from, a make-your-own custom milk shake station. Rocking chairs out front to relax in while you fill up... the car and grab a bite to eat, and ample seating if you want to take a break from the road. The entire place immaculately clean and has exceptionally friendly staff. You know you are onto something great when everyone in the place is in absolute shock and delighted by the fact that we all unknowingly stumbled upon the best rest stop in the U.S.! Did I mention the gorgeous restrooms with granite counter tops! The Kilgore Gateway Travel Plaza will be my planned stop on TX route 20 for all future road trips. Check it out, it is quite impressive and makes the long journey a pleasure! More

Customer ratings and reviews.

This is the fanciest TA I have ever been in. Super clean store, showers, and restrooms. Helpful and extremely friendly work staff ????

Made our usual stop for Freshly made Fried Chicken. Soo tasty and the service is wonderful!

Clean, family friendly. Great place to stop on a trip. We stop on the way to visit Pittsburgh, PA.

Very few restaurants. The convenient store part was nice. They had a lot of needed and random things to buy. Could be better.

I honestly love coming here. I've had nothing but perfect moments here. The food is always made fresh, and the staff is just amazing. Always very clean, I highly recommend this place to anyone traveling that needs a quick bathroom break, needs a snack, or wants to play at the two arcades located one on each floor, visit the general store for extras. The staff works quick with food prep so you shouldn't wait too long.

A Magazine for Those With a Passion to Travel in Style

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

gateway travel plaza reviews

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

gateway travel plaza reviews

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

gateway travel plaza reviews

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

gateway travel plaza reviews

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

gateway travel plaza reviews

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Staffs lie.”

I applied for a resident registration card at the hotel during check-in, but the hotel did not properly process the application, so I had to call and go back to the hotel after check-out, but they still did not confirm it properly. I consulted with a female employee named Julia, and she said it would be possible after 24 hours. After 24 hours, I went to the municipal office to check, but they said that the registration was not in the system and that there was a problem with the hotel. I asked the hotel again, but only received an answer that they did not know.

I will not come again”

Not happy at all with the checkin. Wrong room, instead a kingsize bed they gave two separate beds and there was no possibility to change. The check in time is in my opinion very late at 3pm and you cant use their wifi before checkin. After 3pm the stuff is overwhelmed.

Dear Sahabettin! Thank you for staying with us. We appreciate your feedback. Your opinion is very important for us. We are looking forward to see you again in our hotel. Julia, FO Manager

Comfortable hotel in good but not great location”

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel for 5 days / 4 nights, and were traveling to Moscow as tourists. The hotel is located near the business district of Moscow, and was some distance from the key tourist locations (e.g. Red Square). However, Red Square was walkable (~30 min walk) and the subway, which was a 10 min walk away, enabled us to see all parts of the city. The room was comfortable and clean, and I especially liked the bed. WiFi was available throughout the hotel. The gym was equipped with a full suite of free-weights, though the aerobic equipment was varied and of questionable quality. We did not use the pool, but did observe that there is a full slide. The staff of the hotel spoke English very well, and was helpful in terms of arranging cabs, describing how to get around town / get to the airport, etc. We did not eat breakfast in the hotel as it was fairly expensive. Overall I would recommend the hotel to a friend. The room was clean and comfortable, and the location was good enough to act as our platform from which to explore Moscow. The price was also reasonable relative to the cost of other hotels in Moscow.

Wedding anniversary”

Fantastic. The best place to start our trip. The staff members are very professionals and attentive. Very good and fluent in english. The hotel is sharing the location area with the Moscow World Center. To go to the main landmarks of the city of Moscow, there are 2 Metro stations near the hotel. The neigbourhood is safe and very quiet. Many local restaurants, markets, etc., at walking distance. We have a great service and very willing to help staff.

Staying in Crown Plaza& attending 21WPC conference”

Enjoyable stay, friendly & polite staff, clean room & nice housekeeping, beautiful SPA , Gym and swimming pool. The only point is that making telephone calls from the hotel rooms to inner Moscow and outside Moscow is a bit complicated & confusing, even reception staff were a bit confused how to explain it.

If you are looking for the place that has dealings with Greyhound Bus service then you have found the place. The early bus usually gets here a little after 6:30 a.m. and you do not have to check your luggage/baggage in a day before like you do at the one in Port Arthur. The whole place is old as butt. Pot filled parking lot with a few of the fuel pumps always out of service and you have a recipe for a budget trucker's dream. A few miles down the road if you want something better you will find a Pilot and a Flying J's. The rooms that are located on the second floor here were $49 a night the last time I called (November of 2014). Entrance back to I 10 are very easily accessible getting on, off on either direction.

0* out of 5. The most filthy, disgusting gas station/convenience store/bathrooms I have ever, ever seen. When you travel as much as I do, especially as a small girl, I generally stop at Love's or other large chain truck stops, if they're not available, as they have gas, drinks/food & bathrooms in 1 location, are well lit, open 24/7 & updated & clean. Even the pumps at Love's are clean aside from a stray 2 or so I've seen in my travels. Well, Love's wasn't available, so my GPS which obviously wishes my immediate demise, suggested I stop here. I plan on hammering it to death this week. Pros: * If you are running out of gas or have a gunshot wound & can't go 1-mi further... this filth haven teaming with bacteria is here for you to catch god knows what disease. Cons: * I could go on for a thesis on the work a CSI team in hazmat suits would need to do to clean the layers of filth from this disgusting location... everything, everything, everything is disgusting, from the floors to the women's bathroom, that looks like a murder happened in there to the countertops where there's food. * There was a counter for chicken or pizza (either Chester's or Little Caesar's)... I forget now... & I was stunned to see a line of old folks waiting for food. How on earth could they look at the condition of this soil shack & still have an appetite?! * There's a Grayhound counter inside Dirt Domain, so that gives you an idea of the transient, down on their luck characters who frequent this place. Perhaps the owners feel it doesn't matter to their guests if you're too scared to walk on the floors. * The Arab family who appears to own the place don't wear masks, aside from the woman working the filthy register, behind a filthy plastic partition, who is so wrapped up in garb & gear, it's hard to tell if she's male or female. The others didn't even have partitions at the counter they were working. I got gas, then walked inside & felt fear of going further into the bathroom, due to the condition. But, the bathroom was like something out of a horror movie... filth, clogging, blood, brown layered toilet seats, wet towels discarded from counter to floor were as repellant as the smell (even through a mask), that I couldn't even use the restroom. The outside is rundown & filthy, so is the inside. If you buy food from here, well it was nice knowing ya, you'll perish in a week. During Covid, it's stunning that they've cleaned nothing, it looks like, for many months. I ran from there like my hair was on fire. The health dept needs to make a dire visit. Enter at your own peril. Note: Look at the two 2019 reviews... it appears this palace of filth has been operating under these conditions for at least 2-yrs.

Only giving one star because zero is unavailable. Do NOT eat the fried chicken!! Blood in it twice and rude about it when I brought it back

Small convenience store and restaurant where the Greyhound bus stops. I chose to eat here since I wouldn't have time in Houston before a bus change. Got s burger and okra. Good, buttered-bun diner burger and nice southern fried okra. Though the building is in a state of disrepair, the restrooms were clean and stocked. Couldn't ask for more when on the road.

The only place in between Houston and New Orleans where you can get boiled peanuts, Jenny Mccarthy self help books, wild bill stickers and a Topsy turvy tomato planter in one stop! Seriously a cross between hotel/truck stop/cheap junk stall at a flea market. Good stop for gas and snacks and junk in an odd location outside Vidor. There is a hotel on the backside with no clear way of checking in. Hmmmmm..... Public restrooms could be better but not that bad.

Store smells like sewage and there is mold in the hotel rooms. Bedding was dirty like they don't wash it. Never going back

The only good I can find is, the lot and the store itself are clean. It has a Chesters Fried Chicken, there wasn't any in the "heat lamp" which means they cook it fresh which could be a good thing. But, going into the men's bathroom, it stunk like someone took a major dump on the floor. The stall I used had no TP, the other one had plenty. So, I would only return *IF* I needed to, but not want.

I still have no idea what I am doing, how to find what clients ask me for or how to meet and exceed their expectations or save them money as their travel advisor compared to what they can book for themselves online. 18. Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City
