The Coolest Cars We Saw at the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

The annual automotive pilgrimage to Detroit's Woodward Avenue brings out everything from exotic supercars like the Porsche 918 to classic trucks like the Dodge Power Wagon.

2023 woodward dream cruise

The arrival of the Ferrari Monza SP2 in 2018 set off a wave of new open-air supercars like the Aston Martin V12 Speedster and McLaren Elva , but the Monza has remained the prettiest of the modern speedsters. Also sold as a single-seater SP1, the windshield-less look references 1950s race cars and makes the Monza look especially low to the ground. Under the hood lives a 6.5-liter V-12 producing 799 horsepower. Ferrari built fewer than 500 Monzas, and each cost around $1.75 million.

lamborghini espada

Tucked away behind a building was one of the stars of the show, this white Lamborghini Espada. Production of this two-door, four-seat grand tourer started in 1968 and lasted 10 years, but only 1227 were made in that span. The Espada's stunningly long hood hides a 3.9-liter V-12 which produced 350 horsepower, and this example was fitted with a five-speed manual.

dodge li'l red express

The Dodge Li'l Red Express, launched as a special edition for the D-series truck in 1978, packed serious muscle for the time, with 225 horsepower from its 5.9-liter (360-cubic-inch) V-8. In Car and Driver testing, the truck became the quickest domestic vehicle at the time to hit 100 mph from a standstill. But the Li'l Red Express was just as much about the look, with exhaust stacks towering behind the cab like a semi truck, an oak-paneled bed with a wood-lined floor, and gold graphics on the doors.

porsche 918 spyder

The 887-hp plug-in-hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder debuted at the same time as McLaren's 903-hp P1 and Ferrari's 950-hp LaFerrari in 2013, the three plug-in dream machines earning the nickname the Holy Trinity. While the others made more power, the 918 knew how to transfer that oomph to the pavement, becoming the quickest car in Car and Driver testing at the time with a 2.2-second blast to 60 mph . Only 918 were built.

ford model t

The Ford Model T obviously doesn't have the performance chops of the other cars on this list, but its historical significance is indisputable. The iconic "Tin Lizzie" wasn't rare either, with Ford selling over 15 million units. But it's always a treat to see such an old machine out on the road, and as we learned last year, they are surprisingly challenging to drive .

porsche 911 gt3 rs

The GT3 RS badge has always adorned the most hardcore Porsche 911s, but the latest version is the most extreme yet. The 4.0-liter flat-six's 518 hp isn't the most dazzling number among the supercar crowd, but the 911 GT3 RS's wild aerodynamics—which draw upon Formula 1 with a drag-reduction system on the rear wing—make the GT3 RS a beast around the track. Pricing starts at a cool $225,250.

dodge power wagon

Truck lovers also had plenty to be excited about at Woodward, with lots of beautifully restored classics like this Dodge Power Wagon. Not only is the Power Wagon an imposing piece of machinery, but it was also the first production four-wheel-drive pickup when it went on sale in 1946. The burly truck was closely related to military vehicles used in World War II, and production continued into the late 1960s.

lamborghini aventador svj

The SVJ model represented the wildest version of Lamborghini's V-12-powered Aventador , with the 6.5-liter engine cranking out a potent 759 horsepower. The spiky rear wing and flared nostrils in the hood worked in tandem to provide immense downforce while limiting drag. We were especially enamored with the glistening purple paint on this example.

lamborghini diablo se30

Just a few cars down in the same lot, we stumbled upon another purple Lamborghini, this time a Diablo SE30 in a softer hue. This special edition celebrated Lamborghini's 30th anniversary and brought unique bodywork and a horsepower boost to 523 ponies from the 5.7-liter V-12. Just 150 Diablo SE30s were built.

lincoln continental

The slab-sided 1961 Lincoln Continental may have been 15 inches shorter than its predecessor, but the luxurious behemoth still stretched over 17 feet. The Continental's sleek elegance is accentuated by the coach doors and the expansive front end that contained a series of V-8 engines. The light pink color of this example reminds us of Porsche's Frozen Berry metallic paint that is offered on the electric Taycan.

ford bronco dr

We were shocked to see this limited-production Ford Bronco DR , especially since the $295,000 off-roader isn't road legal. Although the DR uses a stock Bronco frame and standard 10-speed automatic gearbox, the V-6 engine was swapped for a Coyote 5.0-liter V-8. Special dampers from Multimatic and 37-inch BFGoodrich tires help absorb bumps as the DR shoots across craggy desert terrain.

de tomaso pantera

The De Tomaso Pantera combined stunning Italian design with American power, housing a series of Ford-sourced V-8s inside its sharp bodywork. The Pantera remained in production for two decades with a little over 7000 produced, but the cleaner styling of the earlier models, like this one, is considered more desirable.

bmw m3 cs

The latest BMW M3 already featured a polarizing design, but the track-focused CS model takes it even further with black accents on the hood, a redesigned grille with a red border, and a lurid shade of green. A heavy dose of carbon fiber helped shave off around 75 pounds versus a standard M3 Competition, and the 3.0-liter inline six ekes out an extra 40 horsepower for a total of 543 ponies.

buick lowrider

Nearly every facet of car culture is on display at the Woodward Dream Cruise, and we saw several posses of lowriders cruising the boulevard, showing off their trick hydraulic systems. Their bouncy theatrics drew cheers from the crowds lining the streets, and once they had parked, we were able to appreciate the meticulous craft that is required to build these ornate custom vehicles.

porsche 718 cayman gt4 rs

Porsche finally unleashed the full potential of the Cayman with the GT4 RS model, swiping the 4.0-liter flat-six engine from the 911 GT3. In the Cayman GT4 RS, the 9000-rpm motor releases 493 hp, and a combination of sticky tires and hardcore aerodynamics helped it pull 1.11 g on the skidpad in Car and Driver testing.

toyota land cruiser 70 series

Although the show is dominated by American metal, there were some neat Japanese cars like this Toyota Land Cruiser. Launched in 1984, the 70-series Land Cruiser has been assembled in a diverse array of body styles and with a large cast of different engines. The truck is still in production in the Middle East. That's where we believe this example was imported from, based on the national emblem of Yemen affixed to the grille.

ferrari sf90 stradale

It took until 2021 for the Porsche 918 Spyder to be beaten, when the Ferrari SF90 Stradale dashed to 60 mph in just 2.1 seconds in a Car and Driver test. It shouldn't have been a surprise, given the plug-in-hybrid V-8 powertrain's impressive 986-hp output. This example looked especially beautiful in this deep shade of green.

bmw m3 e30

The BMW M3 is the sports-sedan benchmark, and the E30 generation from the 1980s was the genesis. Built to fulfill the homologation requirement to race in Germany's DTM series, the four-cylinder engine sent 192 horsepower through a five-speed stick shift to the rear wheels. The E30 is now considered among the greatest M3s ever built.

jaguar xe sv project 8

Jaguar never really built a true M3 rival off the XE sedan, but it did construct 300 examples of the SV Project 8 , a stripped-down race car for the road with a 592-hp supercharged V-8. Designed to set a lap record for sedans at the Nürburgring, the SV Project 8 even came with a track package that deleted the rear seats (but kept the rear doors).

bentley brooklands

Among the herd of low-slung supercars, the large-and-in-charge Bentley Brooklands stood out. This opulent coupe was related to the Arnage sedan and Azure convertible, and only 550 units were built between 2008 and 2011. A 6.8-liter V-8 fed 530 horsepower through a six-speed automatic to the rear wheels of this $348,085 colossus.

Caleb Miller began blogging about cars at 13 years old, and he realized his dream of writing for a car magazine after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University and joining the Car and Driver team. He loves quirky and obscure autos, aiming to one day own something bizarre like a Nissan S-Cargo, and is an avid motorsports fan.

Past, present and future on display at 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

gm woodward dream cruise 2023

As a Woodward Dream Cruise virgin until Saturday, I had limited experience with the car event — mostly annoyance at the traffic snarls it creates or an occasional nod at a particularly cool car.

Saturday, however, I left the air-conditioned comfort of my own car and made my way through the madness.

People from all over began to line the streets in tents and folding chairs as early as 7 a.m. and by 11, a rainbow of cars edged down Woodward bumper to bumper. On the sidewalk, dog walkers stopped to talk with car owners, strangers traded stories about their own vehicles, and kids of all ages wriggled their way through the crowd and pulled on their parents' fingers to ensure they were paying adamant attention to the parade of traffic.

The historic event began almost 30 years ago, in 1995. Organizers initially expected to draw around 30,000-40,000 visitors from metro Detroit, but were shocked when over 250,000 came to the inaugural cruise.

'I'm a big union guy': Jay Leno talks unions, EVs before driving 1K horsepower Dodge Demon in Dream Cruise

It is now the largest single-day classic car event in the world.

Doug Green started drag racing on Woodward Avenue when he was 15. He officially got a license two years later, but says his privileges were revoked within a year because he had accumulated so many tickets from his hobby.

"My insurance was crazy for a while, but it didn't stop me," he said with a laugh.

Now 73, Green has made the 3½-hour drive from Mackinaw City to Detroit every year since it began, missing just once because he got sick.

"It just brings me back to good times," he said.

Different car companies stood at their booths, advertising their latest models while owners of previous models polished, cleaned and discussed them.

Not all cruisers appreciate the same things, however, and some take great pride in their vehicle's sparkle and shine, while others, especially those with so-called "rat-rides," boast about their car's original design.

Brad Pepperell, 53, of Ferndale, has been attending the Dream Cruise since he was a child and says he appreciates the variety.

"You see things here you're never going to see anywhere else," he said.

As if on cue, a dark orange van began to pass; it appeared to have been flipped upside-down. Another set of wheels were attached so that the car was driving on its roof. A cacophony of shouts — from "WHOA" to "Did you see that?" — rang through the crowd gathering on the sidewalk.

In Birmingham, the National Corvette Restorers Society took up about a block of Old Woodward. Since the group was founded in 1974, the members' goal has been to restore the cars to how they were in the dealership.

"These cars were a part of families. It's a way of bringing back memories," says Mike Bailey, 80, as he stands in front of his 1961 Corvette.

Bailey says that he was thinking of selling his car when his son, Mike Jr., was 3 years old. Upon hearing the news, however, his son began to weep and told him he couldn't possibly. So Bailey kept it.

Decades later, Mike Jr.'s own 2023 Corvette now stands next to Bailey's 1961.

More than just a car show or traffic jam, I realized, the Woodward Dream Cruise is a place where the past, present, and future converge, and where tradition and innovation are celebrated together, as one.

One man, passing the Baileys' cars while gently holding his young daughter's hand, stopped and bent down to meet her gaze.

"Look at the history here," he told her. "This is where the Corvette started and there it is now. Isn't that cool?"

History of the Woodward Dream Cruise

Woodward Dream Cruise was dreamed up as a small fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan. Then, in August 1995, a group of people wished to relive the fun of the 50's and 60's, when music and Motor City steel roared down Woodward Avenue.  Blowing away expectations, the event drew 250,000 people!

Now, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the World’s Largest One-Day Automotive Event!

The Cruise brings about 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars to the area each summer.

People travel from all over the world to attend and be in the show.  It's an incredible experience!

My friend Marcy highly recommends eating at Sylvan Table which we will try this year. It is a farm-to-table restaurant. The restaurant is in a few hundred year old barn they moved from the east coast and built a farm around it. Cool, huh!

  • Other restaurant ideas that come highly recommended from locals include the Latin restaurant Freya and The Apparatus Room.

Are There Bathrooms at the Woodward Dream Cruise?

There are lots of porta johns along Woodward Ave in the more populated areas. Memorial Park in Royal Oak has a large bank of porta johns for the classic car show.

Are There Food Trucks or Places to Eat at Woodward Dream Cruise?

Motown Bistro and food trucks lining Woodward Ave in Detroit

Absolutely! There are food trucks and vendors lining Woodward avenue in the more populated areas, especially Royal Oak and Ferndale. There are also lots of great restaurants along Woodward Avenue.

We enjoy eating at Brown Iron Brewhouse in Royal Oak .

  • Chris was eyeing the Brown Iron Burger with Wagyu Beef, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and a yummy caramelized onion spread but got the Slow Smoke BBQ Pork sandwich with yummy pickles!
  • I got the Cali salmon BLT with avocado crema...be sure to order extra crema, it's yummy!

Um, can you say BACON CANDY?  Drool.

Pontiac — Farms have roosters, the Dream Cruise has V-8s.

WAAAUUGGGHHH! A sinister black Pontiac GTO lit up the asphalt at the Woodward and Long Lake stoplight as cruisers woke up with the sun for Dream Cruise Friday. From Pontiac to Bloomfield Hills, cruisers mixed with commuter traffic as clubs set up tents, Corvette celebrated its 70th anniversary at M1 Concourse, and diehards claimed their desired parking spots.

Tom Paletti, 70, of Macomb Township arrived at Woodward and Square Lake at 6 a.m. in his 421-cubic inch, V8-powered 1966 Pontiac Ventura monster to secure his spot in front of Kerby’s Koney Island. He sat in a lawn chair watching the passing parade with his buddy Terry King, 72, of Chesterfield Township and his bright yellow 1973 Camaro Z28.

More: Here's your guide to the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

“We used to get up at 4 a.m. to get a spot at the Dodge display at 13 and Woodward, but then Beaumont bought that property and the cops won’t let you park there anymore,” said Paletti, sitting in his lawn chair watching the passing parade of cars. “Kerby’s doesn’t mind. We hang out here all week — we like talking with car people.”

At the corner of Woodward and Whitemore in downtown Pontiac, a lone, bright orange 1955 Chevy 210 sat in the lush lawn like a four-wheel safety cone.

Behind the wheel (and the 350-cube V-8) sat Bruce Larkin, 63. “I took the day off, had breakfast, now I’m just hanging out before I put up my tents,” said the Waterford Township resident and member of the North Oakland Bowtie Club that sets up at this corner each year.

“The Pit Stop food truck over there will open up from 5-8 p.m. for dinner and we’ll get about 20 cars today,” he said. “On Saturday this whole lot will be packed with probably 100 cars.”

Further south in Pontiac, M1 Concourse was alive with activity as the car club’s annual Woodward Dream Show celebrates the 70 th birthday of Corvette this year. The parking lot next to the property’s event center was full of Corvettes staging for a midday photo shoot.

“We have a Corvette from every year that Corvette has been made, from 1953 on,” said M1 CEO Tim McGrane. “We even have a 1983 Corvette — one of the rarest Corvettes in existence.”

That’s because 1983 was the only year in its history that Corvette didn’t go into production. Just 43 ‘Vettes were made before Chevy pulled the plug on production, with General Motors choosing to wait until 1984 to introduce its all-new 4 th generation car. All but one of the 1983 Corvettes was crushed — save for No. 23, which was preserved and now calls the Corvette Museum in Kentucky home.

M1 managed to get it to the Dream Cruise — the first time the rare car has ever left Bowling Green. For $25, the public can come by the Dream Show from noon-8 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The 65 th anniversary of the Ram Charger is also being celebrated.

Werner Meier, 72, worked for GM from 1969-2002 and was instrumental in pulling the Corvette celebration together. “For our photo shoot with all the cars here, we have eight white Corvettes representing each generation of Corvette. They will be in the front of the photo.” One of the eight will be Meier's 1953 Corvette, one of only about 300 made.

The Dream Cruise and charity also go hand in hand. The D-Man Foundation is set up at the corner of Woodward and Long Lake to give hot rides to underprivileged kids and adults.

Mary Anne Pacheco, 67, of Canton Township was out early Friday prepping the parking lot — including the tent under which paraplegics and others with serious diseases are lifted into convertibles and other high-horsepower cruisers brought by volunteers for a thrilling ride down Woodward.

“This is our 11 th year,” said Pacheco in front of a ferocious, 2024, Plum Crazy purple, 807-horsepower, supercharged, 6.2-liter V-8 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Demon Jailbreak. “Saturday just gets too crowded out on Woodward so we are here on Friday from 1-4 p.m. for every Dream Cruise. We run rides like clockwork.”

Woodward Dream Cruise 2023: Mega gallery of classics, off-roaders and more

Come for the classics, stay for the offbeat oddities.

gm woodward dream cruise 2023

We just spent the entire day in and around the Motor City enjoying the automotive sights and sounds of the Woodward Dream Cruise. According to the event's website , the Dream Cruise attracts over a million people every year to see a collection of "more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles." That's a lot of people and a lot of vehicles. And if you couldn't be there this year in person, perhaps our galleries from this year's festivities are the next best thing.

We kicked things off up above with muscle cars, classics and hot rods, since those make up the largest part of the collection. Everything from pre-war American cars to 1960s fire-breathers and custom-built street machines are included in the gallery up top.

Below you'll see galleries of modern performance vehicles, trucks and off-roaders and, finally, the strangest sights we were able to point our camera lenses at. And by strange, we mean upside-down vans, boats on wheels and tiny mobiles with men in hats perched atop. Enjoy!

All-in all it has been a very good experience. The cruise itself is great, due to the landscape, the well guided excursions and above all thanks to the crew of the Volga Dream . The crew really cared about the passengers and this care was felt in every contact we had with someone of the crew. The food on board was great, with plenty of choice. Even the choice for vegetarian food was possible.

A minor point was the quality of the inclusive wine that was served during the meals. The quality of the red wine was in fact below every standard. When you wished to drink a decent wine with your meals you had to order a bottle of wine from the wine list.

Both in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow the communication between Volga Dream and the hotels could be a lot better, especially for individual guests. In our opinion at the arrival in the hotel, all necessary information on the trip and contact with Volga Dream should be handed to the guests directly at the reception of the hotel.

In particular, the cruise director Yullia Vegerina, the hotel manager Olga Zateyshchikova, and the chief receptionist Alina Matveeva are well trained, polite, polished, professionals who went well beyond what was required: it was - in fact - for me a dream lived on the Volga...

The staff on the Volga Dream are attentive without being overbearing and nothing is too much trouble. The food is excellent - buffet style for breakfast and lunch and a menu style dinner catering for everyone. Everything is very well coordinated, especially the day tours and there was never a time I saw anyone flustered or upset. A special thank you to Olga, Yulia and Valeria - you are simply the best xxxx Thank you to Volga Dream and ALL of the staff for making our time in Russia such a fabulous one.
