Jenny Eclair Sixty! (FFS!) – Bloomsbury Theatre, London
Reviewer: jane darcy.
Jenny Eclair bounds on stage at the start of her new stand-up show, Jenny Eclair Sixty! (FFS! ), exuding energy. She is obviously delighted to be back with a live audience, greeting us with her particular brand of warmth and intimacy. Far from presenting ageing in her former guise as a Grumpy Old Woman, Eclair positively revels in turning sixty. You no longer have to lie about you age, she says: you flourish your status as you demand a vaccination.
She takes the defiant attitude of Jenny Joseph’s youthful speaker in “Warning”, who fantasizes about growing old disgracefully, wearing colours that don’t go, gobbling food samples in shops and pressing alarm bells. But Eclair really knows what ageing is like and presents it with relish. ‘I’m the face of Vagisan!’ she announces happily at the start of her hilarious but largeable unprintable riff on diminished libido (’chalk from the waist down’). She has a particularly comic set of expressions when she muses on what actually turns her on: ‘mmm – gilets!’ she says with a mischievous look, ‘So cosy!’. ‘Gilet,’ she deadpans, is French for ‘I’m a member of the National Trust’. She still has sufficient hormones to fancy Joe Wicks, but most of her lascivious thoughts concern biscuits, comfy knickers and a nice evening in. Seccateurs get a mention.
Her surprise on turning sixty – ‘I saw it as being something other people did’ –I thought by the time I turned sixty I’d be tall,’ clearly resonates with the audience and not just the middle aged members. Everybody can identify with the tyranny of the ten-yearly passport photo as a decade hoves into sight.
She admits to enjoying lots about pandemic-induced self-isolation. Talking about doing online yoga, her underfloor heating making her mat particularly appealing, she has a lovely image of performing her favourite pose ‘Great Big Sleeping Cat’.
Jenny Eclair Sixty! is a delight from beginning to end. Not only can she make getting older hilariously funny, but she has the ability to focus on the small shames of human life and return them to us in a new and triumphant light.

Jenny Eclair Sixty (FFS) Tour Review – Bloomsbury Theatre
Jenny Eclair is currently touring the UK with her show ‘Sixty (FFS)’ that should have coincided with her sixtieth year. Due to originally take place in 2020 the show had to be delayed to the joy that was lockdown. Having hit 60 last year (but still a year younger than Madonna) Jenny Eclair confronts a new decade of decrepitude. Jenny is now finally able to celebrate this overdue milestone with her fans as she tours the UK.
The comedy circuit seems to have become more of a young person’s game with new fresh faces joining the scene. So, it was both refreshing and insightful to see a show that focuses on the experiences of a sexagenarian woman. Despite being a part of the Grumpy Old Women TV show Jenny Eclair takes to the stage jubilant and enthusiastic. Introducing herself as ‘The face of Vagisan’ it is abundantly clear that Jenny is excited to be back on tour.
No need to concern yourself with whether decorum comes with age as Jenny quickly dispels this myth. From discussing her diminished libido to comparing sex to making your own pastry, this show is not for the prudish. And despite thinking I might not relate to a sexagenarian she manages to make the show relatable for all ages. Like who hasn’t had the pain of trying to get through airport security with a passport photo that’s ten years old. Although most of us probably haven’t had security personally point out just how much we’ve aged like Jenny had.
Whilst Jenny says she is ready to embrace being sixty there is a slight contradiction in her material. At times she implies she’s this decaying old woman character, which is a stark contrast to her bubbly, bold personality. Jenny Eclair is quick-witted and a joyous comic and marks sixty as one of life’s sweet spots. Sixty (FFS) runs until 17 th February 2022, finishing at Newbury Corn Exchange, and tickets are available on her website now.

Jenny Eclair – Sixty Plus!
When: 7th September 2023 Location : Oran Mor Tickets : £24.75 Get Tickets
Jenny Eclair is celebrating 60 with a new stand-up show. Coming to Glasgow’s Oran Mor on 7th September 2023.
Comedian Jenny Clare Hargreaves is best known by her stage name Jenny Eclair. Born in Malaysia in 1960. Her family spent a few years in Berlin before settling in the English town of Lytham St Annes. The daughter of an army general who loved a good fart prank and a joker at heart from a young age. She first tried out the surname Eclair as a teenager while pretending to be French.
After studying at Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre. Jenny joined a cabaret group called Cathy La Crème And The Rum Babies. She moved to London in 1982 and soon after not only met her life-long partner Geof Powell. But also began to pursue a career in comedy. In 1995, Jenny Eclair became the first woman to win Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s prestigious Perrier Comedy Award.
Along with live stand-up shows, the ’00s saw her become a regular face on television. She developed and appeared in Grumpy Old Women from 2004 to 2007, and became a longstanding presenter on Loose Women . Jenny Eclair finished in third place on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in 2010 and appeared on Celebrity MasterChef in 2012. Over the years she hosted her own radio show and starred in various theatrical productions.
Jenny Eclair toured her How to Be Middle Aged (Without Going Insane) show throughout 2017 in venues across the UK and as far afield as Australia, where she also performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Writing Books
In addition, Jenny Eclair built a literary reputation across the release of six books. Since 1994’s non-fiction tome The Book Of Bad Behaviour , she’s penned several novels – from 2000’s Camberwell Beauty to 2015’s Moving – that are as heart-stirring as they are side-splitting. In July 2020, she released the Sunday Times bestseller Older And Wider – A Survivor’s Guide To The Menopause offering an irreverent and honest look at the menopause.
Hitting the age of 60, Jenny Éclair designed a new show to confront this decade of decrepitude. Called Sixty! (FFS!), she revealed it would cover everything from filling out online forms and having to scroll down endlessly for her date of birth to whether it’s a legal requirement to buy Nordic walking poles.
