Queen and Adam Lambert at Fire Fight Australia Bushfire Relief Concert

Queen and Adam Lambert played the band’s iconic setlist from their 1985 Live Aid concert for Fire Fight Australia, a huge Australian bushfire benefit show held in Sydney at the weekend.

This marked the first time the band performed the famous 22-minute set, with Queen saying it was being staged “for the first time in its history”.

Taking place at Fire Fight Australia, Queen also showed footage of late frontman Freddie Mercury to replicate how Mercury brought out chants from the 1985 Live Aid audience at Wembley.

Brian May had described Fire Fight Australia as a benefit concert “a bit like Live Aid”, when he first revealed that Queen had been approached to play the event.

queen tour australia 1985

Queen kicked off 1985, a relatively light year of touring by their standards, with two enormous headlining shows at the prestigious Rock In Rio festival in Brazil; an estimated crowd of between 250,000 to 300,000 over two nights witnessed the spectacle and edited highlights were broadcast throughout South America to over 200 million people.

The success of The Works album saw the band continuing to tour into 1985 with nine shows in Australia and New Zealand, and then back to their beloved Japan for what would be their final shows in these regions with Freddie.

Often labelled the ‘Greatest Live Performance Ever’, Queen capped off their live appearances for the year by stealing the show at Live Aid. The medley of hits that they finely tuned for their allotted 19 minutes on stage at Wembley Stadium on July 13th was a triumph of colossal proportions. It both revitalised the band and gained them tens of thousands of new fans across the globe, and it set them up for their triumphant Magic Tour of Europe in 1986.

Queen at Live Aid, 1985

queen tour australia 1985

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Live Aid was a 16-hour, 75-act, live music extravaganza on 13 July 1985. It was seen on television by as many as 1.9 billion people in 110 countries and raised somewhere around US$127 million to help ameliorate the devastating effects of the famine that had been ravaging Ethiopia for the better part of three years.

It was the third such musical mega-collaboration in less than a year — all for the same cause. In November 1984, Bob Geldof (of the Boomtown Rats) and Midge Ure (from Ultravox) had released the single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” which they recorded with some of the biggest artists in British music, and marketed it under the name “Band Aid”. Immediately thereafter, Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian assembled the supergroup “USA for Africa” to record “We Are the World” in January 1985.

Geldof and Ure leveraged the success of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” to organise “Live Aid” over the course of a feverish three months. Freddie Mercury was not part of “Band Aid” and Queen had attracted significant criticism from both the United Nations and UK Musicians Union for touring South Africa in 1984, thus breaking the agreed cultural boycott in response to Apartheid. But Geldof wanted Queen to perform at Live Aid — and perform they did. It remains one of the most memorable, utterly singular live performances ever captured.

The set was carefully timed and meticulously rehearsed. The question is: was this just an electrifying performance on the world’s biggest stage, or was there a kind of logic behind the choice of songs that was meant to resonate with the cause of famine relief? Did Queen simply pull out their “greatest hits” (as was their brief), or were they attuned to the ethical demands of the occasion?

British band Queen to tour Australia in August with Adam Lambert replacing Freddie Mercury on vocals

LEGENDARY British band Queen is set to tour Australia in August. But who will replace the incomparable Freddie Mercury on vocals?

Ready Freddie ... Queen during their 1985 Australian tour, promoting their album The Works.

‘Shattered’: Taylor’s secret Eras Tour struggle

QUEEN will tour Australia in August with Adam Lambert as guest vocalist.

Lambert first worked with Queen when they joined him on A m erican Idol in 2009.

His vocal range has been compared to the man he will replace — the late Freddie Mercury.

Queen and Adam Lambert will play Perth Arena on August 22, Sydney’s Allphones Arena on August 26, Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on August 29 and Brisbane Entertainment Centre on September 1. Tickets go on sale May 28.

Early days ... Queen members John Deacon, Brian May, Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor.

It will the first time Queen have toured Australia since 1985, however only guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor remain from the original line-up.

Mercury died in 1991, original bassist John Deacon last played with Queen in 1997.

The band, who have played a handful of shows with Lambert over the last three years, have hinted this will could be their final tour.

“This may be the last chance Australian fans have to see one of the greatest rock bands in history,” promoter Paul Dainty said.

It will be the first time Lambert has committed to Queen for an extended period of time, with a US tour starting in June.

“I’m completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon,” Lambert said. “The thought of sharing the stage for a full set in Australia is so beautifully surreal. I’m honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie’s memory; he’s a personal hero of mine, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band.

“I know this tour will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band, I feel like magic will be on display.”

In Freddie’s memory ... Adam Lambert performing with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor.

May and Taylor reactivated Queen as a touring act in 2005 with Free/Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers.

While they recorded an album, The Cosmos Rocks, it peaked at No. 49 in Australia in 2008, but was Top 5 in the UK.

Lambert, who was discovered on American Idol, has toured Australia on his own before and is working on a new album after leaving major label Sony.

Queen’s classic Bohemian Rhapsody was the song Lambert auditioned for American Idol with.

DEATH IS NO OBSTACLE — OTHER REPLACEMENT SINGERS

After Michael Hutchence’s death in 1997 INXS have toured with three different singers — first Jon Stevens, then JD Fortune (from reality show Rock Star INXS) and most recently Irish Ciarin Gribbin. They stopped touring in 2012 however renewed interest in the band this year after the Never Tear Us Apart TV miniseries has led to rumours they may hit the road again.

Singer Bon Scott died in 1980, replaced by Brian Johnson whose first recording with the band was their highest-selling album Back in Black. He continues to sing tracks Scott made famous in AC/DC and regularly pays tribute the man who he replaced, joking he is still “the new guy” over 30 years later.

IN 2002 Doors members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger formed The Doors of the 21st Century, with Cult frontman Ian Astbury as vocalist. He was eventually replaced by Brett Scallions of one-hit-wonders Fuel and the project wound up after the death of Manzarek last year.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Apple iphone 16 unique all new design promised in new report, rudy giuliani and mark meadows indicted in arizona fake electors case, where was anyone but you filmed.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Jones Bay Wharf

Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney Harbour's Pyrmont.

The historic Jones Bay Wharf is another familiar filming location in Anyone But You. The hidden gem in the Pyrmont district is home to fine dining restaurants, charming cafes, and beautiful views the of the city and Harbour Bridge.

Queen Victoria Building

Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, Australia.

While on their way to collect flowers for the wedding, Ben and his friend Pete are seen walking alongside the Queen Victoria Building. The Romanesque 19th-century building is actually a five-level shopping center with fashion boutiques, jewelry stores, cafes, and restaurants.

Anyone But You is now streaming on Netflix.
