The date for final roster cuts is May 13.

UNITED NATIONS, New York – Over the past 30 years, global commitments to sexual and reproductive health and rights have made remarkable advances: Maternal death rates have dropped by almost a third, the number of women using modern contraception has doubled and more than 160 countries have passed laws against domestic violence.

A new report by UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, traces the path that led to this progress and empowered millions with increased freedom and autonomy. But it also lays bare how little these improvements have affected the world’s poorest and most marginalized, for whom rights and choices remain largely out of reach.

These disparate realities are driven by inequality and discrimination, often hidden within our health systems and economic, social and political institutions. Achieving equity, then, requires exposing inequalities so that inclusive solutions can be imagined and implemented.

Below, read about where and how inequality shows up in our societies, lifting some communities up while pushing others behind – and about what can be done to counteract it and ensure a peaceful, prosperous future for all.

1. Inequalities in sexual and reproductive health and rights are everywhere .

In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Alia* and her husband were told that it was “undesirable” for them to have a baby. The reason? They were both blind.

Women and girls with disabilities often face discrimination when it comes to sexual and reproductive health, limited access to services and exclusion from comprehensive sexuality education. Some are even forcibly sterilized.

The particular challenges Alia and other women with disabilities face during pregnancy and childbirth reinforce one of the report’s main themes: That access to health and rights vary greatly from one region, country and person to another.

Disability status represents just one facet of identity that affects the right to health. Geography is another, with women in Africa around 130 times more likely to die from pregnancy complications than women in Europe. And as for women and girls from ethnic minorities, disparities in health-care access were found in all countries surveyed for UNFPA’s report.

2. Progress on sexual and reproductive health for all is stalling, and by many counts, unravelling.

For nearly 20 years, the global annual reduction in maternal deaths has been zero – meaning there has been no progress. Meanwhile, one quarter of women today report not being able to say no to sex with their husband or partner.

This means that despite investments, advocacy and rafts of legislation, women’s ability to exercise decision-making over their own bodies is diminishing. And while barriers to health have fallen quickly for the most privileged, they are standing firm for the most disadvantaged.

“Even in better-off countries, maternal death rates are higher among communities that continue to confront racial and other prejudices in everyday life,” UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem said in her World Health Day statement . “We can and must do better.”

3. Sexual and reproductive health and rights are being politicized – and opinions polarized.

As half the world goes to the polls this year, many leaders have decided to base their political strategies on sowing division.

Anxieties over migration as well as low- and high-fertility rates are being weaponized by some policymakers to strike down sexual and reproductive health and rights agreements. Meanwhile others are making their legal systems less equitable by decriminalizing female genital mutilation or restricting the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, for instance.

Harmful stereotypes about women, girls and people with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities are too often peddled to justify gender inequality and homophobia, with dangerous consequences. As Efram*, a refugee from Syria who was struggling to access sexual health care in a new country, explained to UNFPA: “I can’t tell anyone that I’m gay because of the stigma. We are not recognized, and we don’t have any kind of rights”.

4.But there is hope: Where inequalities exist, community leaders are helping to bridge gaps in services.

Gender inequality, racial discrimination and misinformation are deeply embedded in many health systems: UNFPA research has found that in the Americas, Afrodescendent women are more likely to die during childbirth due in part to racist abuse in the health sector.

For these reasons and others – including cost and distance to facilities – Afrodescendent women may avoid going to hospitals for health care. “It wasn’t the environment I wanted,” Shirley Maturana Obregón from Colombia told UNFPA about her birth plan.

Instead, she delivered with a partera, a traditional birth attendant and practitioner of knowledge ancestral to Colombia’s Afrodescendent community.

Parteras provide culturally sensitive care among Colombian communities that remain largely disconnected from the country’s formal health system – and for whom getting to a doctor can require expensive travel across hazardous, conflict-affected terrain.

Ms. Maturana Obregón said her delivery with a partera was beautiful and unforgettable; she later became a traditional birth attendant herself. “We are there, making women’s dreams come true,” she said.

5. Progress is achievable, but we must reject division and embrace collaboration.

UNFPA’s report shows above all that we cannot divide and conquer on our way to ensuring universal health and rights. Rather, we must find political consensus, tailor solutions to communities and mobilize urgent funding to achieve our aims.

Grassroots leaders are essential to this work: Sarah Sy Savané, who advocates against female genital mutilation and child marriage in Côte d’Ivoire, says programmes aimed at eliminating harmful practices are designed by people working in the communities they target. “Safe spaces, husbands’ clubs and other interventions are making a real difference, shining a light where young girls thought they had no rights,” she told UNFPA.

Initiatives like these have tangible impacts, but they need more support. Spending an additional $79 billion in low- and middle-income countries by 2030 would avert 400 million unplanned pregnancies, save 1 million lives and generate $660 billion in economic benefits. Training more midwives could also prevent about 40 per cent of maternal and neonatal deaths and over a quarter of stillbirths. 

Funding saves lives, while a lack of investment endangers them.

The truth is that inequality is everywhere we look – and once its devastating consequences have been revealed, they cannot be unseen. As UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem said, “We have every reason to act – for human rights, for gender equality, for justice and for the world’s bottom line.

There is only one way to achieve a future of dignity and rights for all: By working together.”

Fuji's ending in shogun with john blackthorne: real meaning explained.

Fuji and John Blackthorne’s emotional boat scene in Shōgun episode 10 was a highlight of the finale and one of the best moments of the entire show.

Fuji and John Blackthorne’s final scene in Shōgun episode 10 was the perfect conclusion to their character arcs and highlighted the only thing the Anjin succeeded in doing. The Shōgun finale confirmed FX’s adaptation of the James Clavell novel as one of the best limited series of recent years, satisfyingly wrapping up the stories of all the characters without the need for a major battle or too much exposition. Shōgun episode 10 was as subtle as the rest of the show, leading to emotional sequences like the one with Fuji and Blackthorne on the boat.

While it seemed like Shōgun episode 10 was going to have a lot of action and depict Toranaga’s win against Ishido on the battlefield, the finale went for a far more introspective approach. Similarly to the original novel, Shōgun ended with audiences learning that Lord Toranaga’s goal was indeed to become shōgun the whole time. John Blackthorne will never leave Japan , and Lady Mariko’s death was a sacrifice Toranaga was counting on. Despite the bittersweetness of the finale, one scene can be considered a somewhat “happy” ending for Fuji and Blackthorne.

Breaking Down Fuji & John Blackthorne's Boat Scene In Shōgun's Finale

Fuji and john blackthorne grieved together in a beautiful scene.

One of the best scenes not only of Shōgun ’s finale but of the show as a whole, Fuji and Blackthorne’s conversation on the boat saw grief bring them together . While Fuji and the Anjin had been friends since the latter was made hatamoto, episode 10 made their bond even stronger due to their shared grief. Fuji had been mourning the death of her husband and infant child since the beginning of the show, whereas Blackthorne had just lost Mariko. Fuji was about to leave, but Blackthorne asked her to join him first for a ritual she was not familiar with.

Fuji had been carrying the ashes of her husband and child , stating she could not let go of it. The Anjin decided to present her with the concept of tossing the ashes into the sea, which, according to his beliefs, would make sure her family would live on forever. Every time Fuji looks at the sea, she will be reminded of her husband and son. Blackthorne also had to accept letting something go – Mariko’s cross. Shōgun ’s finale opens with Blackthorne’s dream of growing old with Mariko’s cross by his side, but in reality, he lets it go into the sea.

Interestingly, the scene with Blackthorne and Fuji on the boat does not happen in the book . Fuji’s character arc was quite different from the source material, yet the changes were all positive. Even though they could barely understand each other without a translator, there was a strong connection between Blackthorne and Fuji that made their final scene perfect. The Anjin would still have one more scene on the shore before the credits rolled, but the moment in which he lets Mariko’s cross go was the true conclusion to his character arc.

There was also a major parallel between the boat scene and Shōgun ’s first episode, during which Fuji had to kill her son as part of her husband’s seppuku ritual. When Mariko went to Fuji in episode 1 to assist her during such a tragic moment, the former told the latter to complete the seppuku ritual herself instead of letting the guards do it. “Let your hands be the last to hold him” is what Mariko told Fuji. In Shōgun episode 10, Fuji told Blackthorne to let his hands “be the last to hold her.”

Without Blackthorne, Fuji might have never found the peace she did in episode 10.

Blackthorne helped fuji move on while forever remembering the family she lost.

John Blackthorne started the show hoping to wage war against his enemies and use his time on Japan to reduce the Portuguese’s influence in the region amidst the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Europe. He would then become close to Mariko and Toranaga, leading to his time as hatamoto of an extremely powerful lord who was at war against the rest of the Council of Regents. By the end of the show, however, Blackthorne had realized that his war was too small compared to the lives that were being lost.

The only thing Blackthorne wanted at the end of the series was to return home and grow old, which is made clear by his dream of the future shown at the beginning of episode 10. However, he will never leave Japan, and nothing he tried to do during the events of the show worked. It can be argued that Blackthorne’s only accomplishment in Japan other than serving as a distraction for Toranaga’s enemies was to create important bonds, particularly with Mariko and Fuji. Without Blackthorne, Fuji might have never found the peace she did in episode 10.

Why Fuji Decided To Become A Nun In Shōgun Episode 10

Fuji lost everything in episode 1.

Following the death of her family in Shōgun episode 1, Fuji was ready to take her life. However, she was given an order by Toranaga – to become the Anjin’s consort. Fuji honored her duty, crafting a strong friendship with Mariko and Blackthorne in the process. While she will forever grieve the loss of her family, Fuji went back on her decision to take her own life by the time her mission with the Anjin was completed. Instead, she will become a nun and be given a new name as she rebuilds her life with a new purpose.

No. 2 on the charts as country music redefines the meaning of No. 1

Messina's "Heads Carolina, Tails California" only hit No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart in 1996. Brooks & Dunn's cover of B. W. Stevenson's 1973 top-10 all-genre hit "My Maria" took five weeks to hit No. 1, while Messina's platinum-selling hit took three times as long to peak and chart under Brooks & Dunn.

That was famously the year that Garth Brooks — then having released 15 No. 1 singles and albums that eventually would sell over 90 million copies — sat in a building at Nashville's Fairgrounds for 23 hours signing autographs at the Country Music Association's (CMA) Fan Fair.

In Music City, expectations of stardom and what encompassed its pinnacle were shifting.

In the same year, plans to revitalize downtown Nashville, including an arena, a stadium, a symphony hall, and an enlarged country music hall of fame, from being a hodge-podge of dive bars, once-legendary country music spaces and assorted businesses of varying levels of reputation began to shape.

By 2001, Garth was four years removed from playing at New York City's Central Park for millions, while CMA's Fan Fair had moved four miles north to the banks of the Cumberland River at the venue now known as Nissan Stadium.

In a touch of fate familiar to numerous moments in Messina's career, she in 1999 recorded her own 70s-era country cover, Dottie West's "A Lesson In Leavin.'"

Like "Heads Carolina, Tails California," the song only reached No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. The reason? Lonestar's countrified pop/rock hit "Amazed" — released almost simultaneously with Messina's hit — achieved chart-topping status for eight weeks on the Billboard country chart, hit No. 1 on Billboard's all-genre Hot 100 and was number two on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts in 2000.

'No peace amid that craziness...'

"There was no peace amid that craziness," offers Messina in regards to the first decade of her career.

Yes, she achieved five million albums sold and six No. 1 singles alongside the influential cosigns of performer Tim McGraw and producer Byron Gallimore. However, she also ended up $500,000 in debt, then eventually changed her management, took her publishing in-house, changed publicists and replaced much of her road crew.

Messina, who off-handedly calls herself "a career B artist," replaced achieving what success looked like in Nashville at the turn of the 21st century with a career that's seen her tour the world multiple times over, attracting fans that literally have seen every date on entire years of her concert tours, or drew them to fly from Athens, Greece to Nashville International Airport to watch Messina play country music's Mother Church.

However, even that wasn't enough to counterbalance the multiple shifts Messina's life endured.

"We all had these huge, fast-moving careers that, whenever they slowed down, I saw things that I believed were solid in my life — rather suddenly — not being so solid," she said. "Losing my identity made everything I thought I knew become foreign to me."

Yet still, as Messina's career slowed, she was impacted by even greater shocks. In 2013, her mother, Mary, underwent multiple open-heart surgeries for life-threatening heart problems. Four years later, Messina herself revealed she had been diagnosed with an unspecified cancer (from which she has announced a full recovery in 2022).

Her life has been as defined by heights as it has heartache.

Country's broad appeal counts Messina among its nation of converts

Messina arrived in Nashville simultaneously with the Class of 1989's Brooks, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Travis Tritt, achieving meteoric success and redefining country music's mainstream expectation by blending refined traditionalism and blue-collar approachable Southern rock swagger.

Messina is from Boston's Southwestern rural suburbs of Holliston, Massachusetts. In the 1980s, three low-frequency country music stations (two AM and one FM) in Providence, Rhode Island, provided the only country music available in the area.

Growing up near nature reserves while listening to faint traces of The Judds and Reba McEntire prepared Messina for what she could culturally expect in Nashville.

"Whether I was walking or riding my bike to the gas station I was working at as a 13-year-old or when I was 16 and Reba released, 'Whoever's In New England,' the heart of the genre is what attracted and hooked me."

Messina's journey to what she imagined country stardom could never quite arrive as it appeared to her on the radio.

A fully invested career finally yields a return on its work

"If I didn't ring the bell at No. 1, I just lashed out at everyone around me and kept on pushing," says Messina about what pushed her initial career rise.

In 1999, though, she had a major hit rest at No. 2. She was still the genre's most-played female star on country radio.

Because the genre continued to move the goalposts upon which peak acclaim was defined, her impressive achievements were never entirely fulfilling.

"Walking that road left carnage that's remained in my life," Messina said. "It's crazy that the same person (pursuing succession country music two decades ago) is the same person currently driving their teenage kids to school and hockey practice."

Listening to 2,500-plus people at The Ryman on Saturday night belting every ad-lib in 1998's "I'm Alright," or offering a prolonged standing ovation after a searing performance by she and her band of 2005's "My Give A Damn's Busted," makes Messina's complete shock and awe at how she's arrived at playing the Ryman as a headliner for the first time in 35 years seem strange.

However, it's in Messina, having yet another pause in her career's latest era, exhales after discussing her career's run of 90s-era country-defining hits.

"Man, that was a LOT of work, wasn't it," she said.

Faith, life and career finally positively converge

For the past decade, Messina's Christian faith-defined life has emerged as more important than maintaining expectations of career acclaim defined by country's mainstream industry.

She describes herself as "a sheep looking for a shepherd and Jesus Christ emerged in my life as a shepherd looking for sheep." For her, faith "authentically merged my heart with my compassion, desires, empathy and selflessness."

"Music now exists for me as not being a showcase of what I've lived, seen and learned," she said. "I already have hits that will last the bulk of my lifetime. Now, I'm looking at my relationship with Christ as what will allow other doors to open in my career and life,"."
