Victoria Kayaking Destinations

A host of Victoria kayaking operators offer rental opportunities throughout the region. They tend to be located near the most popular kayaking areas for ease of access. These include:

  • The Inner Harbour: Far and away, the most popular spot, you’ll love kayaking around the Inner Harbour. You can take in the city’s skyline while darting around seaplanes and pickle boats and spotting playful seals and sea lions.
  • Oak Bay: For those who prefer a laid-back ride, you’ll enjoy a serene paddle amongst jaw-dropping vistas of the Olympic Mountains, Gulf Islands, and assorted local islets.
  • The Gorge Waterway: A narrow tidal inlet that connects Victoria Harbour to Portage Inlet. This more tranquil urban waterway is a tidal estuary that is part of a migratory bird sanctuary.
  • The West Coast: More seasoned kayakers looking for the adventure of a lifetime will prefer the unspoilt beauty of areas like the Pacific Rim National Park and Barkley Sound. The downside? You’ll need to find your way to locations like Sooke, Ucluelet, or Tofino.

A quick search of Google Maps will provide you with a complete list of operators if you prefer the freedom of heading out on your own.

But if you’d prefer a safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable alternative, several pre-packaged Victoria kayaking tours are available.

Victoria Kayaking Tips

Before embarking on any Victoria kayaking adventure, it’s essential to prioritize safety. But remember, if you partake in a guided tour, your guide will ensure you’re well-equipped and versed in safety procedures.

Here are some valuable tips to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience on the water.

  • Gear Up : Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while kayaking, regardless of your skill level. Additionally, invest in proper kayaking attire and footwear for comfort and protection. Luckily, if you take a tour, these should all be included.
  • Know the Conditions : Check the weather forecast and tides before heading out. Avoid kayaking in adverse weather conditions or when strong currents are present.
  • Inform Others : Let someone know about your kayaking plans, including your intended route and the estimated time of return. This ensures that someone can raise the alarm if you encounter any difficulties.
  • Master Basic Skills : Familiarize yourself with basic kayaking techniques, such as proper paddling strokes and self-rescue maneuvers. Consider taking a kayaking lesson or joining a guided tour if you’re new to the sport.
  • Respect Wildlife : When encountering marine wildlife, maintain a safe distance and observe them without disturbing their natural behaviour. Be mindful of nesting areas and sensitive habitats.

S ince I began looking into kayaking on Victoria Harbour, I was excited to get out onto the water. While there were several options, from kayak rentals to guided tours, I decided on going through with this experience with Kelp Reef Adventures.

From the guide to the sights and knowledge of the area, I can only give a glowing recommendation for those looking for a similar adventure activity in Victoria, British Columbia.

This article will look at my experience, as well as commonly asked questions and tips for having your own memorable experience paddling on Victoria Harbour.

Let’s start with my personal experience, including the itinerary of kayaking through the harbor.

Overall, exploring Victoria harbor by kayak and gaining amazing local knowledge through my guide Austin, was an unforgettable 3-hour tour I can’t recommend highly enough.

Fishermans Wharf at sunset

My experience with kelp Reef Keef Adventures

My partner and I arrived at the floating dock at Fishermans Wharf at 8:45am, 15minutes before our scheduled tour time and met our local guide, Austin.

As with any adventure activity, a detailed safety chat was first. After all, Victoria Harbour is an active port that seaplanes and boats frequently take off and dock. Making sure you’re following the rules to not be caught in their path is important.

Even if you’re a beginner kayaker, the tutorial before the tour starts is super helpful, even for a semi-experienced paddler.

Just after 9am, we paddled out of the protected at Fishermans Wharf and towards the Salish Sea that borders the USA.

Following the southern shore of the harbor, Austin talked about the rich history of the area around Fishermans Wharf and the colorful floating homes that line the water’s edge.

Soon enough it was time to cross the travel lanes for boats and planes. The harbor can stretch 100’s of meters at its widest, so no photography or water breaks were allowed for this short stretch.

Once on the other side of the busy stretch safely it was time to explore the surrounding shorelines of the West Bay and Esquimalt.

Past Harrison Island and MacAulay Point Park the channel separating Canada and the United States opened up. This large stretch of water is home to whales, orcas and seals.

By the time we reached Gillingham Islands, there were several seals resting until high tide returns and herons hunting over the small rocky island.

The next stop was a very short paddle to a natural formation of kelp that almost covers the surface of the water while protecting the bay from rough swell. We even got lucky enough to see kelp crabs and they are much bigger than I imagined they would be!

As I learned more about the uses for kelp, from fertilizer to natural water bottles and a critical part of the aquatic eco-system, a seal pup played on a drifting log just behind us. Even got curious enough to poke up out of the surrounding kelp only a few meters away.

Giving these animals the space they need to be comfortable in their environment is important but they sure were lots of fun to watch, especially the pup!

Heading back into the harbor a river otter popped its head up for a split second before diving under the surface and disappearing. A short sighting, but memorable nonetheless.

After paddling through West Bay and passed Rainbow Park into Lime Bay where we slipped under the Victoria International Marina docks before crossing the busy traffic lane towards Laurel Point.

Kayaking Guided Tour FAQs

Paddle Victoria

There are plenty of questions to be asked when it comes to booking a guided adventure through the busy Victoria Harbor. These are the questions I had when discovering what tour was best for me.

If you have any other questions that aren’t answered here, leave me a comment – I’ll find the best answer for you and update this post.

What do I need to bring for my guided kayak tour?

You won’t need to bring much for your tour – light clothes, raincoat, water and your camera is all you should need. Kelp Reef Adventures supplies you with dry bags for electronics and lifejackets.

Do I need to be an experienced paddler?

No, even a beginner can enjoy this 3-hour tour. Each lesson does include a brief safety introduction and how to paddle once you’re on the water. The main thing is to be aware of your surroundings and follow instructions from your guide.

What should I know about kayaking in Victora Harbour, BC?

It can be quite busy with all the air traffic and boats that use the traffic lanes to travel through the harbor. It can also be a little choppy with rougher weather, but the quality of kayaks used are great and should have nothing to worry about providing you follow your guide’s instructions.

What should I wear for my kayak tour?

Light and breathable clothes with a jacket in case you get rained on. A hat and sunglasses will also help keep the sun off you while out there with no shade.

Hiring a kayak vs guided tour?

In the end I think this does come down to personal preference. I typically find that when you go by yourself it’s more sightseeing and you miss out on a lot of interesting information than with a local company that cares about providing great tours.

How do I book my tour?

Booking online is the best way to reserve your spot on your Kelp Reef Adventure . Just click the “book now” button in the top right hand corner to be taken to their booking page.

Kelp farm in Victoria

Was the Kelp Reef Kayak Tour in Vicotria worth it?

The staff at Ocean River were all really nice and helpful. They don't provide you with a lot of gear which surprised me since I paddle in places that need wetsuits and spray jackets. They did have a dry bag and partial spray skirt which I appreciated. We didn't leave the dock until 1045am so I was bummed when the tour only went until 1240pm. Given the literally perfect paddling weather, I would have liked some accommodation for the later departure due to late arrivals. That's the challenge with group tours but I would definitely go out with them again. I even recommended them to a couple I met in downtown Victoria the next day. Read more Written 22 August 2023

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed kayaking in Oak Bay with the fabulous Frederico as our guide. We got to paddle through what can only be described as a kelp forest (think Finding Nemo directed by Tim Burton), then enjoyed the views as we tread the open water. Frederico guided us to an island filled with seals; it was a thrill to quietly watch them go about their seal business. During our tour, Frederico pointed out some interesting landmarks, told us about Takaya (a sea wolf who had lived alone on an island we passed), and helped us appreciate the birds we saw. The folks in our tour ranged in abilities from experienced paddlers to total newbie, and everyone was comfortable on the water and had a great time. This is an excellent tour! Here are some recent reviews from trip advisor :.

I am an experienced kayaker – looking to view nature without the noise of an engine. Victoria Kayak was recommended. Stopping by I could see they had sit in style (ocean) kayaks. I had a choice of rudder or skeg kayak. There were three of us plus our competent guide. With introductions done, we were on our way. I was provided with a hat as I neglected to bring one. Water was supplied. For my two fellow kayakers, it was their first time, so appropriate instruction was given. We head out of the harbour, viewing the skyline, Clipper ferry, float planes, and yes, wildlife. We had a lovely view of seals, various birds (including Canada geese and chicks), starfish, and a beautiful jellyfish. The water was calm and weather warm. The paddle suited me just fine. I was able to explore the coastal edge while my less experienced paddlers took the direct route. I enjoyed the interpretations provided by our guide regarding plant life etc. They have an alternate route should winds be up on the day. You can also paddle by yourself, having a map provided. I think a guided paddle will suit all. Don’t be fearful if you are a first time paddler. The kayaks are stable.
“Excellent Sail” – I wanted to arrange an evening sail of kayaking and dinner, with my large Meetup Group, so I choose Victoria Kayak, due to thier great location. Joanna and her team were extremely friendly and patient with us. Her team was knowledgeable and took us safely through the course. Saw alot of marine life and the weather was perfect. You can also rent your kayak, rather then doing a tour. Finished off with dinner at the Flying Otter Grill which was located in the same building. There is parking on site, but it is pricey. Will do it again. Reservations are recommended if doing a tour.
“Great way to see the inner harbour and surrounding area!” – Joanna made these beginner kayakers feel capable enough to traverse the inner harbour and navigate around the float planes and ferries and other watercraft. She was all about safety and showed us exactly what to do. We went to Seal Island and saw lots of birds. The herons were especially wonderful. It was amazing to see the harbour from the Esquimalt side – it gives a completely different perspective on how Victoria is put together. We kayaked out far enough to be able to look back at the breakwater and the cruise ship dock. Seal Island is near the military housing in Esquimalt and getting there required us the traverse a place where the currents collide. Joanne gave us lots of time and the option of going somewhere else if we were uncertain about our skills. It turned out to be a piece of cake thanks to her preparation. She also took us up by Fisherman’s Wharf to see the houseboats. In all this was a great way to spend a morning. Joanne is a good guide and very knowledgable about kayaking. And for tourists staying in downtown Victoria, its inner harbour location can’t be beat.! We had a great time!
“No experience required…honest!” – My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic introduction to sea kayaking this afternoon with a patient and encouraging guide. This is a great way to get a different view of Victoria and get up close to the aquatic wildlife (we saw seals, heron, otters and jelly fish…oh my!).
“Great kayaking experience!” – It was my first time in Victoria, BC, and I’d heard that kayaking around the inner harbor was an absolute must, so I decided to give it a try. No regrets whatsoever! Great tour – informative and funny, nothing is rushed, your preferences are taken into consideration when planning the route… simply fabulous! Thanks!
“Adventure! AND convenience!” Located right next to the Flying Otter Cafe [Grill] at the float plane air terminal on the harbor in downtown Victoria – picking up a kayak to have a fantastic adventure could not be more easy. Harbor seals pop their heads up to greet you – river otters play – float planes buzz over head – don’t miss this!
“The Fun Way to Tour” – My wife and I went to BC for our honeymoon, spending part of the time in Victoria. We both enjoy kayaking and being active but by no means do you need to be an experienced kayaker to do it! Joanna adjusts the tour to your level and helps with the kayaking basics. We didn’t take the tour at the best time to see a huge variety of wildlife but we did get a glimpse of an otter and a great variety of birds. We also got a great tour of the harbor. Definitely recommend it.
“Chilled, cool and helpful” – Me and my boyfriend, and our friend we met, Tyson, we went for a walk around Victoria, and stumbled upon this kayaking tour place, the rates are fantastic, especially if your on a budget. The staff are really cool and helpful. I was a Guinea pig for a new kayak they were trying out, they made me feel safe and happy. I definitely recommend this place, for a fun and relaxing kayaking experience. :D
“Perfect!” – A great way to see the harbour from the water. We rented a kayak for two, perfect for stable paddling (first-timers should try it this way) but they have a range of singles to rent as well. Joanna was great to work with and the price was great for a busy tourist area. Tip: Call their phone number ahead of time as they are not always at the dock. We did so and met them only 15 minutes later so not a hassle at all. During the summer, I suspect that they will always be there. Got to see a sea plane come in only about 100 ft above us for a landing. A must-do!
Had an awesome trip today at an amazing price. Joanna is awesome and knowledgeable, and made me feel right at home. Spend 2 1/2 hours out on the water in beautiful weather, would fully recommend to anyone!.
“Great scenery and fantastic service” – Loved my experience with Victoria Kayak Tours. They were conveniently located ~5 minutes from my hotel with a very fair price. I appreciated being able to leave my bag safely behind with them. They gave me a dry bag for my camera and a free bottle of water. I wasn’t very experienced (hadn’t been kayaking in about 3 years), but I felt very comfortable with our friendly guide). We were also provided life jackets and skirts for the kayaks. We got a little bit of history during our tour, while also seeing seaplanes land and take off, watching sea otters on shore, and lovely local birds. Our guide was kind enough to snap photos of all of us, which we could access via facebook. I appreciated that it was a family run business as well! This was one of the highlights of my trip to Victoria – I highly recommend!
