About Fuller's London Pride

London pride exists to inspire pride through the enduring pursuit of excellence.

Fullers Griffin Brewery

Not just the iconic ale of the capital, London Pride is an all-British affair that unites a nation of beer drinkers. This authentic beer has been brewed by the Fuller’s Griffin Brewery in Chiswick since 1959, named after the ‘London Pride’ flower that survived in the rubble of war-time London.

Triple Malted For Depth British Hops For Refreshment

Triple malted for outstanding depth of flavour. Every drop of London Pride is brewed at The Griffin Brewery right here on The Thames in Chiswick using 100% British ingredients.

To achieve an ale this consistently balanced takes skill, dedication and time. But then the things that bring us pride always do.

Our Partnerships

We’re immensely excited to be working alongside the most respected competitions and extremely proud of our partnerships that we continue to Support with Pride.

Premiership Rugby

Fuller’s London Pride are the Official Beer Partners of Premiership Rugby. Reinforcing our heritage with rugby; from supporting the game’s grassroots community clubs up to the elite level, we are an iconic ale enjoyed by fans and players alike for generations.

Brentford FC

We are also Official Stadium Founder Partners of Brentford Football Club. Fuller’s and Brentford have a history that goes back more than a century, to when Fuller’s donated a nearby apple orchard to the club, which became their Griffin Park home in 1904 – the name being a nod to Griffin.

We look forward to continuing this connection – helping to serve, support and entertain fans, local people and visitors.

British And Irish Lions

Fuller’s London Pride has had a proud association with rugby for many years, so it is very exciting and a real privilege for us to become the Official Beer of The British & Irish Lions and to be able to display the iconic Lions shield across our product range.

London Marathon

We Run with Pride as the Official Beer of the London Marathon. This is an icon of our capital city and it is highly appropriate that we support it. We are built on pride and passion, and the London Marathon is a perfect reflection of our values and what it takes to be a runner.

london pride brewery tour

London Pride one of world's best beers, tour comes up to standard.

I have visited breweries all over the world, Fuller's and Anchor steam in S.F. I would rate as the best. Dave was a great guide, knew his stuff. Wonderful location, apparently very happy workforce, therefore great atmosphere. Of course the final tasting was the icing on the cake. Not only were we given the full background of each brew, but we were given generous quantities of each to taste. Afterwards lunch at the Mawson's Arms was delicious.............Thank you.

london pride brewery tour

This was an excellent tour, giving us a clear exposition of the brewing process, and history of the brewery. The tour guide, Alison, was a knowledgable and genial host and went to great efforts to make it a great afternoon. The tasting session in the Hock Room at the end of the tour adds an enjoyable finale.

Interesting, full of history, science and culture. One of the best brewery tours I have done for many years. Tasting at the end adds a special sparkle - great character of a tour guide - Dave!

If you habe been to a couple of brewery-tours in your life, don't bother visiting the Fuller's brewery. But if you're intrested in the Fuller's history and fancy a couple of beers after a tour, you should take that one! Don't be shy in the tasing part at the end / make the modt of it!

I took my partner here for his birthday as he is a big fan of Fullers and ales in general. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly and the tasting was a great ending. I am not a fan of ale but found a few I liked. Also a really reasonable price.

Great time at the brewery, a real life working visit with a great guide to show us around. Much better than a famous one in Dublin.

Fri 5pm-9.30pm, Sat 11am-5.30pm, Sun noon-5pm.

Beavertown Brewery

Beavertown Brewery

Few London breweries have expanded at the phenomenal rate of Beavertown, which now occupies a huge warehouse space in Tottenham. Whether such progress owes anything to the fact that its founder happens to be the son of Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, we couldn’t possibly comment. But when the beer – as bold and brash as its can art – is so consistently good, who cares?

Sat 2pm-8pm

Bexley Brewery

Bexley Brewery

Currently the only brewery in its borough, its labels are unmistakably recognisable by their wild, ring-necked parakeets (also an icon of the local area).

Sat Nov 28, 11.15am-12.30pm, £10.

Bianca Road Brewing Co

Bianca Road Brewing Co

One of south London’s newer breweries occupies a massive warehouse space just off of Old Kent Road. Brockley Brewery

Brockley Brewery

Brockley Brewery was founded by a group of local residents who felt that the area’s thriving local community was lacking good-quality ales. Housed in a disused builder’s workshop, it opened its doors to the public in 2013 so that everyone could take advantage of a brewery on their doorstep.

Fri 5.30pm-7.30pm, Sat 10am-5pm.

Bullfinch Brewery & Bar

Bullfinch Brewery & Bar

Occupying a pair of small railway arches next to Brockwell Park, Bullfinch specialises in punchy American-style pales. Its beers are becoming a feature of some of the city’s finest craft beer pubs, but the best way to sample the full range is by settling down with a tasting flight in the on-site taproom.

London Pride - Pride of London

We started our tour with lunch in the Fullers pub, we thought it would be a good idea to eat before we had a few. The pub staff were very helpful and friendly, the menu was well above average for pub grub. The beer was superb. We then went on the brewery tour, our guide Sue was very knowledgeable and she had a wonderful passion for the old place. The tour was interesting, surprisingly they have kept some of the old machinery for a company so tight on space this was impressive. It was equally impressive that every pint of London Pride came from this brewery. We then finished with the tasting session at the end which again was well worth it. Afterwards we took a walk along the Thames towards London where you stumble across more Fullers pubs and inevitably more London Pride. Will return as soon as we can. Fantastic day.

A great tour full of history and amazing facts our tour guide Colin was very informative and had a real passion for his job great tasting session after with a wide variety of fillers products 👍👍👍

A Guide to London Pride

A Guide to London Pride

Book a travel gay approved hotel, london pride is taking place on july 1st 2023.

The first gay Pride parade took place in London on July 1st 1972, following the success of New York’s inaugural Christopher Street Liberation Day - the parade organized to commemorate the momentous evening in July 1969 when queer patrons fought back against police harassment at the Stonewall Inn. The influence of the Stonewall Riots on the queer community was transatlantic and it wasn’t long before plans for London’s own Gay Pride parade began to materialize. Marching to the sound of screaming members of the National Front, the first Pride attendees carried signs reading 'Lesbians and Gay Men Come Out On the Streets' and ‘GAY IS FUN; GAY IS PROUD; GAY IS BEAUTIFUL!’.

By 2007, London Pride parade was in its 35th year and had grown to be one of the world’s largest and best-attended Pride celebrations. Today, Pride in London routinely attracts over 30,000 participants and the parade remains the only annual event to shut down the city’s iconic Oxford Street. Paired with some of the world’s most liberal and progressive LGBTQ+ legislation, Pride in London is a fantastic choice for gay travelers eyeing up this year’s Pride calendar.

London, with its sprawling scale and patchwork of boroughs, can be overwhelming at times, but thankfully the bulk of Pride in London’s events are concentrated around the Soho neighborhood and marble-lined Oxford Street. That being said, thanks to the city’s claim of multiple gay districts, you’ll find Pride-inspired events wherever you look.

London Pride will be held on July 1st 2023, featuring an inclusive selection of workshops, parades, parties, and performances. With events ranging from the Trafalgar Square Stage, which will host Idina Menzel, Todrick Hall, and Adam Lambert, to the PrideBoat, a tranquil midday cruise along the Thames, regardless of what your dream Pride looks like, you can make it a reality in non-stop London.

london pride brewery tour

London Pride Parade

Kicking off at Hyde Park at 12PM, the London Pride parade will snake through the streets of London in a dazzling procession of beautifully decorated floats and marchers. Thanks to its consistently large turnout, London’s Pride parade has become one of Europe's most distinctive and popular.

One of the benefits of celebrating Pride in London is the abundance of fantastic vantage points found along the parade route. The iconic architecture of the UK’s capital means your Pride experience will be framed by one of the world’s most famous cityscapes. Spectators and revelers tend to descend on the parade route in the late morning/early afternoon, so it’s best to head off early if you want the best view of the parade in all its glory. If you’re keen to avoid the crowds on the 1st of August, it’s never a bad idea to book a spot at one of the city’s many rooftop bars and restaurants, whereby you’ll enjoy a spectacular bird’s eye view of the procession.

London Pride parade will begin in Hyde Park in 2023, with a main grandstand being erected in Haymarket. From Hyde Park, the procession will wind its way through the city's vibrant streets.

London Pride Events

London is home to a number of neighborhoods known for their creative energy and queer history, and throughout Pride in London, it’s in these districts that visitors will find the bulk of the celebrations community events, and pop-ups. There’s no one way to do Pride, and in London, visitors will find a diverse array of activities ranging from Burlesque and drag brunches to rock operas and Pride picnics. A full list of the community events taking place during London Pride can be found here.

Whilst the Pride in London Parade kicks off at 12PM near Hyde Park, the festival’s Grandstand will be open from 11.30 AM for eager spectators to secure one of the parade route’s most enviable vantage points. The focal point of Pride, the Grandstand promises to be a buzzing hub of the queer community for the duration of Pride in London.

Taking place on the evening of the 1st of July, the Ministry of Pride event promises to be the highlight of Pride in London’s evening schedule. Featuring a lineup of DJs and artists including DJ Fat Tony, Chris Brogan, and Reece Spooner, the event will showcase the world’s premier queer electronic music pioneers. Ministry of Pride will take place at the Ministry of Sound from 10PM on the 1st of July 2023.

For the perfect combination of entertainment and education, don't miss out on the chance to partake in one of London Pride’s Drag King and Queen Walking Tour. On a 3-hour adventure through London's vibrant and renowned queer district, you’ll enjoy fascinating tales and local insights from the perspective of a fabulous drag artist. Prepare to delve into the origins of Soho's name and uncover the intriguing secrets lurking beneath the surface of Broadwick Street. Get ready to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of London's queer district and create unforgettable memories along the way.

A story that's been brewing for some time. Immortalised in the name of one of our famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be Fuller's. It was then that the partnership papers of Fuller, Smith & Turner were officially signed, marking the start of something special for London's brewery scene.

BREWED SINCE 1845

Our heritage.

The Fuller's Griffin Brewery is a special place. Not just to us, but to anyone who has ever enjoyed a pint of Pride. It's where the magic happens, where the malt meets the hops.

Our Beginnings

Our Beginnings

Beer has been made in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer. In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.

When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.

The Griffin is born

The Griffin is born

The next notable owners of the brewery were John Thompson and David Roberts, whose six-year partnership suffered due to a series of legal wranglings. The duo predictably parted company in 1786 when Roberts left to join the Royal Household and Thompson soldiered on alone.

Eventually, the brewery passed to his sons, Douglas and Henry. It was under their stewardship in 1816 that the brewery first acquired the Griffin name and emblem. The Griffin had previously been the symbol of Meux and Reid's Brewery in the aptly-named Liquorpond Street, but when that business collapsed, the Thompson brothers moved swiftly to snaffle the name.

The adoption of the Griffin is a decision that's certainly stood the test of time, but other decisions by the pair were far less successful. Double dealings pertaining to mortgages led the brothers – and the brewery – to the brink of ruin. They needed investment, and fast

Fuller, Smith and Turner

Fuller, Smith and Turner

The Thompson brothers invited Philip Wood, brother of London's Lord Mayor, into the partnership, but Wood knew his money alone couldn't save the brewery. He too looked elsewhere for help. It came from one John Fuller.

Fuller was a wealthy country gentleman and he jumped at the chance to come aboard, investing primarily on behalf of his son. He soon bought one of the Thompsons out and, within a couple of years, found himself the majority shareholder at the brewery.

In 1839, John Fuller died and passed control to his son, John Bird Fuller. The younger Fuller moved quickly to make his mark, and by 1845 he'd severed ties with the Thompsons to take the reins by himself.

He sought investment and expertise from third parties though, and John Smith – already helping to run a successful brewery elsewhere – was invited aboard. He invested on behalf of his son, Henry Smith, and his son-in-law, John Turner.

So it was that Fuller, Smith & Turner came into being

setting the standard

setting the standard

Following incorporation, a wave of acclaimed ales came out of the brewery. Chiswick Bitter arrived on the scene in 1930. Into the '50s, London Pride took centre stage. Then, in 1971, ESB was launched. In 1997 our first Vinatge Ale was launched using the finest ingredients available which has continued to be our philosophy to this day

Awards started flowing as freely as the beer and we soon became the first brewery to win the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain award with three separate brews.

The story continues

The story continues

That's far from the end of the story though, as we continue to invest and to innovate, building on our history and heritage to set new benchmarks for brewing and retailing as part of Asahi UK Ltd.

We have a great amount of Pride in our rich history – but there's plenty in our future too.

This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of London’s best breweries and pubs, as well as an insight into the city’s rich brewing history.

In recent years, the craft beer movement has breathed new life into London’s brewing industry. Microbreweries and independent brewpubs have been popping up all over the city, each with their unique take on the brewing process. The rise of craft beer has not only led to a diverse range of beer styles and flavors but also helped to support small businesses and create jobs in the industry.

Exploring London’s craft beer scene is an exciting way to discover the city’s local culture and traditions. Each brewery and pub has its unique character, from the traditional pubs with a rich history to the modern taprooms with sleek designs. Visitors can experience not only the beers but also the atmosphere and ambience of each establishment.

As you explore the breweries and pubs in London, you’ll notice that they all have their unique story to tell. The brewing process, the ingredients, the history, and the people behind each establishment all contribute to the unique character of the beer you’ll be tasting. From traditional methods to experimental techniques, each brewery has its take on how to create the perfect pint.

This guide will take you through the best breweries and pubs in the city, highlighting what makes each of them unique. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or just someone who wants to experience the local culture, there’s something for everyone. From traditional alehouses to modern taprooms, we’ve got you covered.

So, let’s get started on a journey of discovery through London’s best breweries and pubs. From the history of the brewing industry to the best food and beer pairings, this guide will give you all the information you need to experience the city’s craft beer scene to the fullest.

History of London’s Brewing Industry

London’s brewing industry has a long and fascinating history dating back to the Middle Ages. The city has been a hub for brewing for centuries due to its access to the River Thames, which provided an essential source of water for brewing. In the 16th and 17th centuries, beer was the staple drink of the working classes, and there were over 3,000 alehouses in the city at the time.

One of the most significant events in London’s brewing history was the introduction of hops in the 15th century. Hops were used as a preservative, and their introduction led to the development of the pale ale, which was a popular style of beer in the 18th and 19th centuries. The industrial revolution brought about significant changes in the brewing industry, and by the 19th century, London was the brewing capital of the world.

However, the 20th century saw a decline in the brewing industry in London, with many of the traditional breweries closing down due to competition from larger national brands. The city’s brewing industry was in danger of becoming a relic of the past until the rise of the craft beer movement in the 21st century.

The craft beer movement has led to the revitalization of London’s brewing industry, with the emergence of small, independent breweries and brewpubs. These breweries have a focus on quality over quantity, and they use traditional brewing methods and unique ingredients to create distinctive flavors and styles of beer.

Today, London is home to a thriving craft beer scene with a wide range of breweries and brewpubs, each with their unique take on the brewing process. Visitors can experience a diverse range of beer styles, from traditional British ales to experimental IPAs and sour beers. The city’s brewing history has provided a strong foundation for the current craft beer movement, and the brewing industry continues to evolve and grow.

In the next section of this guide, we’ll take a closer look at the best breweries in London, highlighting what makes each of them unique.

7 BEST London Brewery Tours for this Summer

Want to learn about the London beer scene? From Camden Town Brewery to the Meantime Brewing Company, these are the best London brewery tours for you!

london brewery tours

If you’re looking for something different to do this summer, then here are my favourite London brewery tours for you guys.

I’ve been living in London for over 10 years now and I can’t tell you how much the beer scene has changed in that time.

5-years-ago the most exotic beer you’d find in a pub was Hoegaarden. Fast forward to today and there are so many cracking craft beers to choose from. Honestly, the choose in almost endless, more than you can do in a night anyway. Most pubs even have Beavertown on draft nowadays (which I absolutely love by the way).

brewery tours in london

Supplementing all of this beer are these amazing London breweries popping up all over the city. Breweries like Fullers and Camden have been around for ages, but now there are single still craft microbreweries creating some downright delicious beers.

Places like Fourpure Brewing Co and Camden Town Brewery have really changed the craft beer scene with innovative ideas. For example, Fourpure were the first British brewery to can its beers in 330ml cans, something that is now becoming much more the industry standard now.

brewery tour london

As a beer lover (you can even read all my fun facts about beer here!), I’ve done a fair few of these incredible London brewery tours, you know, for research purposes and all that.

From self-guided tours at the Bermondsey Beer Mile to a historic pub tour right in the heart of the city, these are some of the best beer tours in London.

The next time you’re looking to drink your way through the city, go on one of these tours and really experience how great the craft beer scene is here in the Big Smoke.

Oh, and drink responsibly and all that.

Tours in London

Camden town brewery.

camden town brewery tour

Camden Town Brewery really is one of the best breweries in London and you will love the tours they have here.

I think Camden Town Brewery have some of the freshest IPAs in the city. Pop along to the taproom and you’ll quickly see what I mean. The best thing is they’ve also got an excellent kitchen so you can eat here too.

As for tours, this brewery offers two different tours. The first is a drop-in tour (meaning you can’t pre-book). This is a quick tour that takes you through the basics of beer and it only costs a gold coin donation (either £1 or £2). The money is donated to the 4 charities that the brewery supports so you’re even doing a good deed going on this tour.

The second tour is a lot longer and much more in-depth. This tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and will take you on a trip through the brewery sampling a few beers along the way. This is a great place to start your beer Odyssey and you really get to see the inner-workings of a brewery. It ain’t pretty but boy do they produce a delish beer at the end of it.

This tour costs £12 per person and it’s best if you pre-book beforehand. Obviously you can pop along to the taproom for free. There is some incredible street art in Camden too which is why I love visiting this part of London.

The Five Points Brewing Co.

five points brewery tour

You may have seen Five Points beers in supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsburys – their JUPA juicy pale ale is one of my go-tos for a summer bbq; it is absolutely delicious.

Well, these guys are now doing brewery tours too. Located in the heart of Hackney in east London, these tours are all about the methodology and the brewing process.

Led by one of the main Five Points beer experts, they will take you on a guided tour of the brewhouse, barrel-ageing project, and packaging lines while explaining everything that goes into making excellent craft beer.

After the tour, you will taste four different beers fresh from the tank while seated on their mezzanine beer terrace overlooking the brewery. This brewery is always great to visit, especially before a night out in Hackney afterwards.

Five Points Brewing tours are available on Thursdays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 2pm & 4pm. They also do private tours too!

Meantime Brewery Tour

meantime brewery tour

If you’ve ever wanted to see the Cutty Sark or the Royal Observatory (the birthplace of Greenwich Mean Time) then maybe add the Meantime Brewing Company to the list as well.

Meantime Brewery is an award-winning brewery in Greenwich. It actually lives inside the Old Royal Naval College. This means that it is only the second brewery in the world inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Very London and very cool.

The Old Brewery run regular tasting sessions and tours that you can go on. The tour and tasting session last around 90 minutes, and you can even book a private tour if there’s a large group of you.

On Saturday there are tours every hour from 12-5pm. On weekdays, they only offer evening tours at 7pm. Tickets are £20 per person and included a tasting session.

Fuller’s Brewery Tour

fullers brewery tour

Fuller’s is one of the oldest breweries in London. They have been brewing beer on this site in Chiswick since 1845. How amazing is that!?

With beers like London Pride, Frontier and Honey Dew, they’ve got a really quality range of beers that have been served up to Londoners for well over 100 years now.

The Griffin Brewery tour shows modern machinery combining with traditional brewing methods to produce Fuller’s award-winning ales. This tour is perfect for tourists as it runs from Monday to Friday with a number of slots from 11am till 3pm. The tour usually lasts around 90 minutes and you end up in the taproom at the end of it.

Tickets for this one cost £20 per person and are really popular so book beforehand. You’re also right next to the Thames Path so you can go for a walk along the Thames afterwards.

Historic pub walking tour

historic pub beer tour london

This is actually one of the most popular London beer tours you can do.

On this tour you’ll experience London’s traditional drinking scene on a pub crawl taking in some of the most historic pubs in the city.

You’ll have a fun and educational guide where you’ll visit at least four historic pubs. Pop into centuries-old ale houses, see literary haunts favoured by writers like Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and learn about local drinking culture through the ages.

For those of you who are interested in the history of London while enjoying a few pints along the way, then you really can’t go wrong with this tour. You can find out more about this London walking tour here .

Bermondsey Beer Mile

bermondsey beer mile

I can’t recommend the Bermondsey Beer Mile enough for when you’re in London.

Basically, the beer mile is an amalgamation of craft microbreweries and bottle shops located in the old railway arches of Bermondsey near London Bridge. It’s taken the craft beer experience in London to the next level.

To date, there are about 17 different London breweries along this roughly 2-mile stretch. The best thing to do here is start at one end and make your way along the Bermondsey Beer Mile stopping off at a few different places along the way.

A few notable mentions that I’d really recommend are Anspach & Hobday, Fourpure, Partizan, Southwark Brewing and The Kernel. Stop off at any of these and you’re bound to enjoy the beers they have on offer.

The best thing about the Bermondsey Beer Mile is it’s essentially a self-guided tour. Just pick your team, head there early on a Saturday and see if you can tick off a fair few of these mircobreweries.

For me, this really is one of the best self-guided London brewery tours you can do in the city. I have no doubt you’ll enjoy this one. A lot.

For more information about all the different London breweries and their opening times, check out this incredible Bermondsey Beer Mile guide . This guide will really help with planning your trip here.

Beavertown Brewery

beavertown brewery

I feel like Beavertown Brewery have slowly been taking over London for the past couple of years now. If you’ve never heard of this place before, Beavertown produce fantastic session beers like Neck Oil and Gamma Ray. If you haven’t had these yet then get yourself on a Beavertown Brewery Tour!

Beavertown Brewery was set up in 2011 by Logan Plant, son of legendary Led Zepplin frontman Robert Plant. Located in Tottenham Hale, North London, Beavertown is well-known for its annual event The Beavertown Extravaganza. This is where they welcome some of the top breweries from around the world to offer up their beers to thirsty Londoners.

The Taproom at Beavertown is awesome and there’s a huge outside beer garden that’s perfect for the summer. I’d really recommend getting here and trying out a few of the beers that Beavertown have to offer.

The Taproom is open every Saturday and they even have a street food truck there for when you’re feeling peckish. Even though this isn’t an out and out London brewery tour, it is still a fantastic place to visit. When it comes to beer tasting in London, it’s hard beating this spot.

Which one of these breweries in London would you be keen to visit? Make sure you let me know in the comments below!

"Very tasty! I love the fruitiness of the yeast, and depth of flavor with low alcohol." - drcraig

"Hit all my numbers and it is great! A very nice session beer! I'm sure it's one I will keep on tap, right next to the Electric APA . Thanks again for yet another great recipe." - matto

"Wow! What a fantastic beer. Malty and complex, the English hops and yeast really set this beer apart. I can't believe it's only 4.2% ABV. I had this beer on tap at Pub Italia two weeks ago and I think mine is better. Thanks Kal!" - Geosmashing

"Just tapped this one today. When I kegged it a week ago I sampled it flat (like I always do for every beer I make) and wow I could drink this beer flat with no carbonation! I let it carb for a week in my conditioning fridge at very low carbonation and I tried it today. This is such a wonderful English beer! When it warms up in the glass the complexity really shines and the balance of nice English hops really prop up the malt and I love the finish. Another great recipe! Smooth as could be and very tasty! Thanks!" - jcav

"I love this beer and so does every one of my friends, along with the ESB ." - Castermmt

"Kudos to Kal for another great recipe. In 2019 I had a layover in London and had a chance to drink a Fuller’s London Pride. Kal’s recipe is it. This is very, very good." - KB

Fuller's London Pride is deep amber or bronze in colour, with a thinnish off-white head. It's a smooth and astonishingly complex beer, which has a distinctive malty base complemented by a rich balance of well-developed hop flavours from the Target , Challenger and Northdown varieties.

London Pride is somewhat lighter than their ESB , but the rich, underlying caramel and toffee sweetness is still there. This is complemented by Fuller's signature orangey notes, provided by their in-house yeast (available to homebrewers as Wyeast 1968 London ESB Ale yeast or White Labs WLP002 English Ale yeast ).

London Pride is satisfying and refreshing, and a cut above the average session bitter.

In the UK, draught London Pride is brewed to 4.1% ABV (cask and keg), while in bottles and cans it has a strength of 4.7% ABV, making it an ideal session-strength premium ale. In most of their overseas markets, a keg version at 4.7% ABV is available. We chose to make the 4.1% ABV version here.

5.5 million pints of London Pride are exported each year from the brewery in Chiswick UK

London Pride has twice been awarded Champion Best Bitter at the CAMRA Great British Beer Festival (1979 and 1995), and achieved the ultimate accolade of Champion Beer of Britain in 1979. It has won a host of awards around the world, including being crowned Supreme Champion at the 2000 International Beer and Cider competition.

If you don't like hoppy/bitter beers, don't let the word 'bitter' throw you off. English bitters are nowhere near as bitter as American styles. In fact, London Pride is all about balance. It's only bitter enough to balance the malt backbone.

Some recipes for this beer will call for flaked maize (corn) . Fullers moved away from using that many years ago and now only use British  pale  and crystal  malts. If you want do an 'old school' version of this beer, replace approximately 15% of the British Maris Otter malt with flaked maize (corn) .

Fuller's London Pride

You may have troubles finding all of the hops needed for this recipe. Some hop substitutions will still give you an enjoyable bitter, just try and stick with English hops if possible. You can (for example) make a very nice variant with only UK East Kent Goldings (EKG) hops as they're much easier to find.

Yeast substitutions should be avoided however. One of the keys to brewing this right is to use Fuller's own yeast ( Wyeast 1968 London ESB Ale yeast or White Labs WLP002 English Ale yeast ). The yeast is also highly flocculant (likes to settle out) so the beer drops brilliantly clear without need of any clarifiers.

  • Add 500mg potassium metabisulfite to 20 gallons water to remove chlorine / chloramine (if required).
  • Water treated with brewing salts to our Hoppy lite  flavour profile: Ca=110, Mg=18, Na=16, Cl=50, SO4=100 (Basically Randy Mosher's ideal Pale Ale numbers with slightly less sulfate and a Cl:S04 ratio of 1:2. We're not making a hoppy American beer here so we go a bit easy on accentuating bitterness.). For more information on how to adjust your water, refer to our step by step Water Adjustment guide.
  • 1.25 qt/lb mash thickness.

45-bottle wine coolers

  • Raise to 168F mashout temperature and hold for 10 mins.
  • ~90 min fly sparge with ~5.6-5.8 pH water (measured at mash temperature).
  • Boil for 60 minutes, adding Whirlfloc and hops per schedule. Lid on at flameout, start chilling immediately.
  • Cool the wort quickly to 66F (we use a one-pass convoluted counterflow chiller   to quickly lock in hop flavour and aroma) and transfer to fermenter .
  • Aerate or oxygenate  the chilled wort to a level of 8-10 ppm dissolved oxygen. For more information refer to our Aerating / Oxygenating Wort guide.
  • Pitch yeast and ferment at 66-68F (wort temperature). We use modified stainless fermenting buckets in wine fridges .
  • Ferment until approximately 5 points from final gravity and then raise the temperature to 70-72F until finished. In our case we simply turn off the  fermenting fridges  and allow the beer to naturally rise to room temperature. Assume fermentation is done if the gravity does not change over ~3 days.
  • There is no need to use finings such as  unflavoured gelatin  as the yeast is extremely flocculant and will drop brilliantly clear on its own.
  • Package as you would normally. We rack to kegs  that have first been purged with CO2 and then chill to near freezing while carbonating at the same time in a 6-keg conditioning fridge . After ~1-2 weeks at serving pressure the kegs will be carbonated and ready to serve. In a hurry? Feel free to raise the CO2 pressure temporarily to 30-40 PSI to carbonate fast over a 24 period, and then turn back down to serving pressure.
  • Carbonate this beer to fairly low levels (the lower the better in our humble opinion, or even better, as a cask ale ). If you have the means to serve it through a beer engine with no extra carbonation other than residuals left over from fermentation, do it! We think you'll really enjoy the difference. Over carbonation destroys a lot of the subtleties of this beer. Do not over carbonate. Another option that we've used is to serve the beer on a stout faucet pushed by a nitrogen/CO2 blend, producing a nice creamy head and close to flat beer. One inexpensive way to mimic this is to use a syringe (without needle) . Pour the beer as you would normally and then suck up a syringe full and force it back into the beer, hard. Repeat 2-3 times and you'll knock most of the CO2 out of solution leaving a nearly flat beer with a creamy head. Not quite the same texture, but similar to a nitro pour. We tried this for years before finally adding a real nitrogen/CO2 serving setup to our basement bar .

View this post on Instagram It’s alive! Started this WY1968 yeast starter a couple of days early because the smack pack was old. It’s now fermenting nicely and should be done tomorrow, ready to brew Fuller’s London Pride this weekend. The stupid power adapter for my stir plate stopped working late last night. With no time to troubleshoot/fix I pulled out my Heathkit DC power supply to keep things going. <rant> The cheap made in China power adapter only lasted 2 years.
