Muse to play ‘in the round’ on tour

UK and Euro dates announced for Drones shows offering 360-degree experience

Muse have announced the first leg of their 2016 world tour in support of latest album Drones, featuring UK and Europe dates from April to June.

The band have also confirmed they’ll perform from a stage set at the centre of each arena, offering an “in the round” experience for the first time ever.

Drones , Muse’s seventh album, was released in June. Frontman Matt Bellamy admitted he’d had reservations about working with producer Mutt Lange , but soon changed his mind, saying: “He was totally into the concept – he’s the kind of person to get into the mind of the artist and whatever the artist wants.”

Tickets go on sale at 9am on September 16. Further dates are to be announced across Europe and North America in due course.

Drones Festivals Tour 2016

The Drones Festivals Tour began with Muse headlining at the Glastonbury Festival 2016 on June 24th 2016. It lasted throughout the Summer of 2016, and ended with the Krakow Live festival. The tour included European festivals, plus a special one-off gig at Reykjavik's Laugardalsholl .

Information

The festivals tour began shortly after the arena tour ended, with Muse headlining the Glastonbury Festival for the third time. The setlists of the tour were based around the 360/arena tour sets, but accomodated for the festival stage.

The tour went as planned, however, the Istanbul gig , planned to take place in July, was cancelled for safety reasons, due to a coup attempt in Turkey.

Stage Design/Production

The overall design of the stage was fairly minimalistic, compared to previous festival stage designs, while still providing a visually immersive show. Behind the band were eleven cuboid monoliths, with video screens at the front of each one, and see-through panels at their sides, which allowed them to be lit up from the insides. Each of them was able to move back and forth independently. The monoliths were all controlled by hand, by roadies behind the monoliths. During the Reykjavik gig, the movable monoliths were replaced with a big LED screen due to the size of the stage.

Morgan had his keyboard placed on a movable boom arm, which was connected to Dom's drum riser. Matt's feedback amp, which wasn't present on the 360 tour, returned on stage. The piano was only used for The Globalist, and was always (apart from the last gig), the upright piano. Like the previous tours, confetti and streamers were used during Mercy. Pyro was used once, during the Glastonbury gig, for The Globalist .

Due to the tour taking place in outside areas, Muse weren't able to bring in the flying drones, used during the 360 tour. This was done for health and safety reasons, as outside elements would made the drones easier to loose control and fall into the crowd.

• Assassin was played two times at the fourth slot at U-Park and Krakow Live.

• Butterflies and Hurricanes was played two times at the third slot at U-Park and Gurtenfestival
• The setlist used for Glastonbury Festival was slightly different than the rest of the tour as it featured Reapers after Psycho, Stockholm Syndrome before The Globalist , Starlight played after Supermassive Black Hole and JFK preceding Hysteria which was played later in the set.
• Dead Inside was moved to later in the set after the Eiffel Tower gig.
• Bliss was played at the third slot at Garorock.
• Montreux Jazz Festival had a one-off special set including rarities such as Fury and The Groove .
• Lowlands had a shorter setlist, a couple songs had to be cut and Time is Running Out was played earlier.

Muse’s 2016 ‘Drones’ Tour – Inside The Making Of Their Most Ambitious Shows Ever

Muse announced a huge arena tour last week – then celebrated by playing one of their most intimate shows in more than a decade. The trio let word slip of their last-minute surprise show at Electric Ballroom in London with just hours to spare, sparking a rush down to the Camden venue for first-come, first-served tickets. We were there, not only to report on the hysteria that ensued when the band finally took to the stage , but to get a glimpse into how preparations were going for next year’s tour, from the clever creatives responsible for designing it.

We knew the band would be bringing drones with them for the shows, but it turns out that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what Muse have up their sleeves for 2016. Catching up with production designer Oli Metcalfe and tour director Glen Rowe backstage, as Matt Bellamy and co loaded into the Electric Ballroom, we got a glimpse into a hugely ambitious-sounding touring spectacle that’s aiming to update Pink Floyd’s famously super-sized ‘The Wall’ production.

The stage “looks like a double headed arrow essentially,” Metcalfe explains. “It spans the length of the arena. It’s quite narrow but more importantly for the audience its low, so the band will be playing in an intimate space, and have a good relationship in terms of distance from their audience. So it allows a stronger connection I feel for the group.”

“We started thinking about boxing rings,” adds Rowe. “When a boxing match is staged in an arena you think it’s tiny – a little postage stamp in the middle of this huge arena arena. So we thought, let’s make a tiny stage in the middle of the arena so it’s a small circle with two runs ways with what you call a hammerhead at each end, where things can pop up and we can make technology work. The whole circle moves one revolution per hour. The idea is Matt starts there and an hour later he comes back, so in the show everyone sees him [up close] twice.”

As for the drones, the subject of a lot of speculation among Muse fans as to how they will be integrated into the show: “The world is going through a very difficult phase of appraising unmanned aerial vehicles and at the moment there is a lot of scepticism of how they can be used in order to be safe,” says Metcalfe. “So we’ve been able to work with a company in the Netherlands that have written a piece of software that can control a whole swarm of drones so we’re programming them in a different way. They’re not manned, they’re not manned vehicles as in somebody with a controller. They’re controlled by a computer system and tracking system.”

Muse will take ‘Drones’ around the world in 2016

Muse have announced a 2016 world tour behind their latest studio set, “Drones.” The band will kick things off on April 5 in Dublin, Ireland, with the first leg of the tour and perform throughout England, Portugal, Scotland and Spain before closing out the run June 4 in the Czech Republic. For ticket details, head to  Muse.mu .

This tour will bring a first for Muse. The guys will perform in the round, with the stage positioned in the middle of the arena.

“This stage design and configuration will give fans a true 360 degree audio/visual sensory experience,” the band said in a statement.

More dates are expected to be added to the tour, but for now, the roster is below.
