oneworld reaches a 25-year milestone, having flown nearly nine billion customers since 1999

' src=

The oneworld® alliance celebrates 25 years of delivering an exceptional and seamless travel experience to its customers worldwide, with a member airline flight taking off or landing somewhere in the world every six seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Since 1999, the alliance has flown nearly nine billion customers on its member airlines, connecting them with friends, loved ones and different cultures around the globe.

Launched on 1 February 1999 by its founding members American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas, the alliance was formed to increase connectivity and flexibility for passengers and to reward frequent flyer customers with special benefits and privileges.

Since then,  one world has grown to include 13 of the world’s top airlines – Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, SriLankan Airlines, 26 affiliate airlines and a  one world connect partner Fiji Airways. Oman Air is set to join the alliance in 2024, becoming its 14th full member.

More than 330,000 airline professionals across  one world member airlines work tirelessly on the ground and in the air, delivering smooth and memorable travel experiences for customers across the alliance. To celebrate the alliance’s landmark year, uniformed staff across  one world member airlines will wear unique pin badges which have been specially-designed with a new 25th anniversary logo.

Representing rich cultures from more than 170 territories served by  one world member airlines, the alliance celebrates diversity, uniqueness and inclusivity, making every customer feel welcomed and valued. Today,  one world member airlines collectively serve more than 900 global destinations, offering customers unparalleled access to more than 600 premium airport lounges, additional baggage allowances, the ability to earn and redeem miles across its network and fast-track security lanes at select airports.

one world is the only global alliance to provide eligible customers access to First Class lounges, irrespective of the  one world member airline they fly. It also offers two types of round-the-world fares, providing travellers with flexible options based on continents visited or distance travelled.

Robert Isom, American Airlines Chief Executive Officer and  one world alliance Chairman, said: “We are happy to celebrate the world’s leading airline alliance with more than 200 million loyal customers around the globe.

“Together, we now operate more than 12,000 departures every day – equivalent to a  one world member airline flight taking off or landing every six seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Highlighted by the recent opening of our first fully-branded  one world lounge in Seoul in South Korea, we continue to expand the  one world network around the world for the benefit of our customers. We look forward to the next 25 years of setting new standards in customer excellence and innovation.”

Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer of Cathay Pacific, founding member of the alliance, said: “Celebrating 25 years of  one world is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision. Our partnership has enabled us to connect cultures, bridge continents and create lasting memories for travellers around the world.”

Vanessa Hudson, Chief Executive Officer of the Qantas Group, a founding member of the alliance, said: “For 25 years our alliance has brought together the best carriers, lounges, frequent flyer programs and networks to benefit our shared customers. As the leading alliance in the sky, we’ll continue working with our partner airlines to ensure  one world delivers even more value as we help to connect travellers across more than 900 destinations around the globe.”

Luis Gallego, Chief Executive Officer of International Airlines Group (IAG), said: “ one world’s 25 th  anniversary marks a significant milestone in our journey towards providing exceptional travel experiences. Together,  one world members have contributed towards shaping the landscape of global aviation, and we remain committed to driving excellence for our customers.”

In 2019,  one world launched Travel Bright, breaking the mould of airline alliance advertising by creating a contemporary, warm and positive brand that reflects millennials’ energy and positivity.  In January 2024, the alliance opened its very first  one world branded lounge experience, at Incheon Airport in Seoul, South Korea, further delivering on its vision of making travel bright.

one world reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability in January 2024 by becoming the first airline alliance to join IATA CO2 Connect, contributing operational data to the aviation authority’s emissions calculator, which establishes a carrier’s carbon footprint.

As  one world embarks on its next 25 years, it remains steadfast in its commitment to setting new standards in customer experience, continuing its journey of innovation and collaboration, and creating memorable and meaningful travel experiences for millions of customers around the globe.

D/DOCK’s creative minds, Jochem Straatman and Tatiana Otani Nishi, have crafted an immersive and interactive one world identity within the lounge. The decor marries smart digital features with elegant South Korean cultural motifs.

From reflective glass art reminiscent of Korea’s Lantern Festival to design elements inspired by the traditional ‘Gat’ hat, the lounge is an alluring blend of heritage and modernity. It offers various zones with different seating options to ensure comfort for every visitor.

The lounge showcases exclusive services and a dynamic ‘mood light’ that changes with the day’s times. Every detail, from the unique materials to the tailored amenities, redefines luxury travel with a forward-thinking perspective.

Jochem Straatman, D/DOCK Art Director, said: “It was exciting to transform the highly dynamic but digital  one world brand into a tangible, elegant, and sophisticated 3D space for the first time.

“We have created an engaging lounge with its own distinct  one world identity which has been designed as a vibrant integration of smart digital technologies to boost connectivity and fun.”

Tatiana Otani Nishi, D/DOCK Interior Designer, said: “Through careful design, with features reflecting its South Korean location we have delivered a modern and original premium lounge experience which makes travel feel easy, comfortable and enjoyable.”

oneworld: Making Travel Bright

Gerhard Girkinger, one world’s Vice President for Customer Experience, Delivery, and Membership, expressed pride in inaugurating the alliance’s first-ever branded lounge in time for the alliance’s 25th anniversary.

“The new  one world lounge is an exciting next step in our vision to making travel bright. Together with ASPIRE, we have combined refined fixtures and finishes, digital technologies, and warm and ergonomic settings to create smart and memorable travel experiences,” he said. “Our new Incheon lounge resets the benchmark for contemporary travel and will serve as the blueprint for future  one world lounges in select airports around the world.”

Travel Bright – one world adopts bright new brand positioning as the alliance turns 20

one world® is ensuring its brand is fit for the alliance’s third decade as the leading global alliance marks the 20th anniversary of its launch with an invigoratingly fresh positioning - complete with a new tagline “Travel Bright” and website.

one world CEO Rob Gurney said: “ one world is undergoing a radical transformation to build on the value it generates for customers and its member airlines as it enters its third decade.  Travel Bright is the visual representation of all those changes.  All of our research indicates it resonates strongly with our core target market – today’s frequent international business travellers.”

Breaking the mould of airline alliance advertising, Travel Bright draws on engaging and energising characters and visuals set against a range of bright pastel colours to present the bright new one world - contemporary, warm and positive in its expression, with a look and feel reflecting the more energetic and positive millennial generation.

As such, it features characters representing a full range of cultural, ethnical and age diversity.

It is designed to communicate the character of the alliance and the benefits it delivers, drawing on three core themes:

•   Guidance: one world and its member airlines work together so customers have a great journey wherever they need to travel - a world-class collection of airlines that connect together seamlessly.

•   Understanding:   No matter where you find yourself, one world is there to provide tailored service that understands you, your journey and why it matters.

•   Anywhere:   Across six continents, one world enables you to earn rewards, travel further and relax in comfort with special privileges for frequent flyers all the way.

A key objective has been to simplify how one world’s customer value proposition is presented, making it easier for customers to understand the key benefits the alliance delivers.  Each of these elements will be featured in individual snappy 15-second videos.

Rob Gurney added: “Travel Bright shows what makes one world a different kind of alliance – offering smart benefits and smart technology while demonstrating its human side.

“We want every customer’s experience to be the best experience. That is why we do the work to make] airline travel – whether it be domestic or around the world, on one or multiple carriers – as frictionless and simple as possible.  We are aiming to make travel bright – with bright conveying warmth, intelligence, progression and optimism.

“This has shaped one world’s new visual identity, with its design, photography and language working together to express warmth and humanity, clarity and simplicity, energy and innovation, and reflecting our customers of today.”

This sweepingly different brand positioning is being rolled out now across all one world communications channels – including a relaunched alliance website at oneworld.com - and through messaging about the alliance by its member airlines.

Developed by global advertising agency Ogilvy in conjunction with the alliance’s Marketing team, the brand relaunch involved the creation of almost 300 different visual assets, translated into nine different languages, that will be used in physical and digital formats, allowing more engaging conversations via social and digital channels.

The new oneworld.com is also being rolled out from today, initially in English, but with versions in nine other languages – including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish – to follow.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
