Shane lowry birdies the last to win bmw pga championship, beats rory mcilroy, jon rahm by one stroke, share this article.

Shane Lowry gave an embrace to his friend Rory McIlroy as the latter strolled into the scoring tent.

“I don’t know how that missed,” Lowry said to McIlroy, referencing the 2022 FedEx Cup Champion’s eagle putt on the 18th hole at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. Lowry missed an eagle only minutes earlier, instead tapping in for birdie to take the clubhouse lead at 17 under.

McIlroy needed his putt to tie. It crept ever so close to the hole and came to a stop, seemingly staring inside the cup from the right edge. He knocked in the birdie, but it wasn’t enough.

Lowry was victorious after a brilliant final round 7-under 65 to capture the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship event. Lowry was two shots back when the day began of overnight leaders Viktor Hovland and Soren Kjeldsen, but his birdie on the final hole, a par 5, gave him a one-shot victory over McIlroy and Jon Rahm, whose 8-under 29 (with a bogey) on the back nine Sunday propelled him into the clubhouse lead for the majority of the day.

“It has been a good year. I’ve felt like I’ve been close a few times,” Lowry said. “I love it here. I’ve contended here in the past. I’m so happy.”

Rahm shot a 10-under 62 in the final round, but he had five birdies and two eagles on his back nine to take the clubhouse lead until Lowry’s closing birdie. Lowry, meanwhile, eagled the par-5 fourth hole to begin his day and then made five birdies on the way in.

Lowry played all three rounds without recording a bogey. He became the first Irishman, and second all-time, to win the BMW PGA Championship since Harry Bradshaw in 1958.

McIlroy, meanwhile, shot 5 under in the final round to finish at 16 under for the tournament, which was reduced to 54 holes following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. He also narrowly missed a birdie on the par-5 17th hole that would’ve gotten him to 16 under and in a tie for the lead.

McIlroy was in the fairway on the 18th when Lowry carded his birdie to take the outright lead. He knew an eagle was needed, hitting a 4-iron from 242 yards to 23 feet, 6 inches.

Yet his eagle putt came up just short, giving his good friend Lowry his first victory since the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in 2019.

Talor Gooch finished solo fourth at 15 under. Before the leaders teed off, Patrick Reed completed a 9-under 63 to take the clubhouse lead at 14 under, but he finished in a tie for fifth with Hovland, Kjeldsen and Thomas Detry.

‘One for the good guys’: Shane Lowry wins the BMW PGA to cap a wild week at Wentworth

On the strength of a Sunday 65, Shane Lowry won the DP World Tour's flagship event — his first victory since the 2019 Open Championship.

Getty Images

Things were anything but ordinary this week at the BMW PGA Championship.

Lawsuits, barbs in the press, and geopolitics all had moments of topicality throughout the week at Wentworth, but on Sunday, the golf finally took center stage. And when the dust settled, Shane Lowry stood as the lone man atop the leaderboard.

“I’m so happy,” Lowry said. “I’m the happiest man in the world right now.”

Lowry’s sentiments were earnest and simple. It had been over three years since the Irishman had laid his hands on a trophy, and the drought was wearing on his psyche. But in a superb Sunday 65, Lowry quelled the negativity that crept into his head and bested a field of top players for a one-stroke victory.

Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood talks fan reception, LIV player court case — and ‘fantasy world’

Getting to Lowry’s moment of jubilation wasn’t quite so simple, though.

The inclusion of LIV golfers in the field started the week on a tense note. Before a shot was even struck at Wentworth, the storylines were spicy. A lawsuit in the UK allowed for LIV golfers to gain entry into the field, and those who’ve remained loyal to the DP World Tour were not so happy to see their old pals — Lowry included.

“There are certain guys that I just can’t stand being here, if I’m being honest,” Lowry said. “I don’t like it that they’re here. To be honest, the one thing that has really annoyed me over the last few months is how disruptive they’re all trying to be. I get that they’re here to get world ranking points and do that, but in a way I think they’re here for that and to be disruptive.”

This is as passionate and erudite as I’ve ever heard Shane be on golf’s ongoing soap opera. pic.twitter.com/9skSmXYNi4 — Jamie Weir (@jamiecweir) September 7, 2022

Lowry was hardly the only loyalist to express his annoyance with the LIV golfers playing the BMW. Billy Horschel delivered an impassioned monologue calling the defectors “hypocrites” for showing up at Wentworth, while Jon Rahm called out LIV golfers for exploiting the DP World Tour for world ranking points. Rory McIlroy used his time with the press to poke fun at the LIV golfers in the field.

“I’ll be trying to win a golf tournament regardless,” he said. “They are going to be pretty tired on Sunday; it will be the fourth day.”

On Thursday, play finally commenced — and things only got more strange.

As play neared completion during the opening round, tragedy struck the UK when it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died at the age of 96. The loss of the monarch reverberated throughout the country, and golf quickly became an afterthought.

Out of respect for the fallen leader, officials elected to suspend play at Wentworth. The stoppage lasted through Friday as flags were lowered to half-mast and the country mourned the death of the Queen.

pic.twitter.com/e3JSfJm3zO — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 8, 2022

“She truly was an inspiration to people the world over,” the DP World Tour said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the Royal Family at this time.”

Although the shock of the Queen’s passing was still fresh in the minds of many associated with the tournament, officials decided to press on with their flagship event, albeit with a truncated, 54-hole format. Players returned to Wentworth Saturday morning.

Round 2 was dominated by Scandinavians as Søren Kjeldsen and Viktor Hovland rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. But it would be another crop of European stars that became the storyline on Sunday.

Lowry and McIlroy began the day within striking distance of the lead, but Rahm inserted himself into the conversation with a spirited back-nine charge. Thanks to five birdies and two eagles over his final nine holes, Rahm posted at 16-under to claim the clubhouse lead.

“I remember Alex Noren did it to me one year — the year he won, he went out early and shot 62,” Lowry said. “That came into my head … I just tried my best.”

On this day, Lowry’s best was just good enough. With an eagle and five birdies — including at the par-5 18th hole — the Irishman posted at 17-under. And when McIlroy’s final eagle putt slid past the hole on the 18th green some 15 minutes later, Lowry finally claimed the crown.

The circumstances surrounding the tournament made it all the more sweet.

“I made no secrets how I felt about this whole thing at the start of the week,” Lowry said. “I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself first and foremost. But also for this tour and everyone who’s stayed loyal to this tour. I really feel like this is one for the good guys.”

2023 BMW PGA Championship: Ludvig Aberg seizes co-lead after Round 2 as sensational run continues

The rookie ryder cup selection surged to the top of the leaderboard at wentworth on friday.

BMW PGA Championship - Day Two

Ludvig Aberg is coming. That much has been made clear. Following his win at the European Masters a few weeks ago and his selection as a captain's pick on the European Ryder Cup team by Luke Donald, hopes were high for his BMW PGA Championship showing at Wentworth Club this week.

Thus far, he has exceeded them.

Following a 68 on Thursday in Round 1, he shot a 66 in Round 2 (with a double!) to grab a share of the 36-hole lead with fellow Swede, Sebastian Soderberg. And Aberg did it all in front of two playing partners you may have heard of, Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland.

The 66 on Friday was a show. Eight birdies, including this hole-out chip on No. 14, helped him put together a 34 on the front and a 32 on the back to get into the lead:

Ludvig Åberg produces yet again...🤯 #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/JIazA0mnJH — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 15, 2023

"Normally I would have putted it, but I had my pitch mark right in my line so I couldn't putt it," Aberg said of the chip. "So I had to chip it over. It came out a little bit hot ... luckily it went in, and it was quite a cool experience."

There are a few players still out on the course after play was suspended for darkness, but it is unlikely that anyone catches Aberg as the Round 2 co-leader; he will likely begin Round 3 with Soderberg, clear of the rest of the field.

Almost slam dunks it! 🏀 Ludvig Åberg co-leads the @BMWPGA . #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/4EVbD6JlBE — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 15, 2023

"I thought it was great," Aberg said of his performance on Friday. "It showed that even though I wasn't as sharp off the tee as I would want, I still was able to find a good score. Really pleased with the way I hit my irons and my wedges. Gave myself a lot of chances. Pin high a lot today, which tells me that I was striking the ball quite well. Looking forward to the next couple of days, it will be a lot of fun."

Can you imagine the hype if Aberg were to win his last two starts before the Ryder Cup, including the premier tournament on the European Tour?

All of it has been part of a special run for Aberg over the last several months. Since the Masters, he has accomplished the following:

  • Win at the Big 12 Championship
  • Win at the NCAA regional
  • Sweep of the Ben Hogan Award, Haskins Award and Jack Nicklaus Award
  • No. 2 driver in the world (min. 20 measured rounds) behind only Scottie Scheffler
  • Win at the European Masters
  • Named to the Ryder Cup team
  • Shooting a 68-66 on McIlroy and Hovland in one of the biggest and most important tournaments in the world

An astonishing run for somebody who was playing college golf this time eight months ago.

And while the Ryder Cup will be the highlight of his 2023, a win this weekend at Wentworth would both be the biggest (by far) of his young career and add to the hype and the substance of somebody who is clearly becoming one of the best players in the world.
