A Travel Warning Was Just Reissued for This Popular International Destination

Plus, other active travel advisories for american tourists right now..

Macau, China

With international travel in full bloom post-pandemic and lots of people on the move (to the point of, at times, creating overtourism issues ), it is important to read up about your destination before you actually get there. A simple Google search can go a long way, especially when it comes to government-issued travel advisories .

Among these, the US government recently reissued a travel advisory concerning Macau as well as Mainland China and Hong Kong due to "new national security legislation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region." According to the advisory, travelers run the risk of wrongful detentions, among other things, due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws. Currently, the advisory is at level 3, meaning travelers are encouraged to "reconsider travel" in those areas.

This is not, however, the only active advisory right now. While it might not seem like it, at any given time, many countries worldwide have warnings in place for American travelers. To help you navigate international travel more seamlessly and to provide you with a better understanding of how the different types of advisory may impact your travel, we have put together a handy guide of the countries that the US State Department issued new (or updated) travel advisories for March and April. This guide will be regularly updated as more advisories are issued.

Each advisory in the list below is categorized under a different degree, highlighting the level of danger assessed by the department. Level 1 is the lowest degree and suggests you "exercise normal precautions." Level 2 warns travelers to "exercise increased precautions." Levels 3 and 4 are the highest levels, and they respectively tell travelers to "reconsider travel" and "do not travel."

For more information and to see a complete list of active travel advisories for Americans, you can visit the Department of State's website . To stay updated on travel advisories that might impact your next international trip, you can also register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

Read on for more details on the new travel advisories for Americans as of the last two months:

The Kyrgyz Republic : Level 1

Authorities are encouraging travelers to exercise normal precautions in the Kyrgyz Republic.

However, visitors should reconsider travel to the border region with Tajikistan, as it has increased risk.

Moldova : Level 2

Travelers should exercise increased caution when traveling to Moldova due to "unresolved conflict between the breakaway region of Transnistria and the central government."

Additionally, they should reconsider travel to the Transnistria breakaway region due to "the unresolved conflict with the central government and the armed conflict in neighboring Ukraine."

Rwanda : Level 1

When traveling to Rwanda, visitors should exercise normal precautions.

However, some areas have increased risk. Travelers should exercise increased caution in the Rwanda-Burundi border due to crime, and they should reconsider travel to the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border due to armed violence.

Equatorial Guinea : Level 2

According to the authorities, travelers should exercise increased caution when traveling to Equatorial Guinea.

Cote d'Ivoire : Level 2

When traveling to Cote d'Ivoire, visitors should exercise increased caution.

Authorities, however, placed a "do not travel" advisory to the northern border region due to terrorism.

Armenia : Level 2

Travelers heading to Armenia should exercise increased caution.

Some areas have increased risk, and travelers should avoid travel to the border region with Azerbaijan.

Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza : Levels 3, 4

Due to terrorism and armed conflict, citizens should avoid traveling to Gaza.

Due to terrorism and civil unrest, travelers should reconsider travel to Israel and the West Bank.

Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau : Levels 2, 3

According to the authorities, travelers should reconsider travel to Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.

Additionally, for the same reason, they should exercise increased caution when traveling to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Travelers should also reconsider travel to the Macau Special Administrative Region due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services, and they should also exercise increased caution in the area due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.

Ecuador : Level 2

The US government is encouraging travelers to exercise increased caution in Ecuador due to civil unrest, crime, and kidnapping.

Additionally, the government placed a "do not travel" advisory for the following areas:

  • Guayaquil, south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue
  • The cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in the province of El Oro
  • The cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo in the province of Los Rios
  • The canton of Duran, in the province of Guayas
  • Esmeraldas city and all areas north of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province

Travelers should reconsider travel to these areas instead:

  • Guayaquil north of Portete de Tarqui Avenue
  • El Oro province outside the cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas
  • Los Rios province outside the cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo
  • All areas south of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province
  • The provinces of Sucumbios, Manabi, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo

Iraq : Level 4

Travelers should not travel to Iraq due to "terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and Mission Iraq's limited capacity to provide support to US citizens."

Are Disposable Hotel Slippers the Next Plastic Straws?

Slippers supplied by hotels — flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric — are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

A factory worker in a blue uniform is crouched beside a large plastic bag of disposable hotel slippers.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

In November, managers at the Arenas del Mar resort near Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica, challenged employees to come up with ways to operate more sustainably. The maintenance crew suggested electric locks on guest room doors. The food and beverage department proposed making jams from fruit peels. And the housekeepers advised: Ditch the slippers.

“It didn’t make sense because you use them once and throw them out,” said Hans Pfister, the president and co-founder of Cayuga Collection , the hotel group that manages the resort, which took housekeeping’s advice. “It’s very wasteful.”

Like plastic straws and mini bottles of shampoo, disposable slippers — flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric, and often found bedside at turndown or bagged in hotel closets — are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

“Anything single-use is problematic,” wrote Willy Legrand, a sustainable hospitality expert and a professor at the IU International University of Applied Sciences in Bad Honnef, Germany, in an email. He cited the large footprint of a small slipper once you factor in production, shipping and waste. Single-use slippers, he said, “feel out of place and out of touch.”

Nina Boys, the vice president of sustainability for Beyond Green , a group of hotels vetted for their sustainability practices, called slippers “low-hanging fruit” in the fight against plastic.

Slippers as status symbols

While plastic straws can be easily replaced with paper versions and small shampoo bottles by larger dispensers, subbing for slippers is more complicated based not just on materials but cultural expectations and perceptions of luxury.

Providing slippers in hotels is rooted in the Asian tradition of removing your shoes indoors, said Diana Verde Nieto, a sustainability expert and the author of “ Reimagining Luxury .”

“As hotels started to cater to international guests, particularly those from Asia, the provision of slippers became a way to accommodate and respect these cultural norms,” Ms. Verde Nieto wrote in an email. She added that the comfort and hygiene associated with slippers has become a universal luxury standard today.

Offering slippers also helps hotels earn status ratings from travel organizations like AAA or the European Union’s Hotelstars .

Some resorts have found it easier to address sustainability through food waste and community engagement than footwear. Winvian , the boutique resort with 18 cottages and one suite on 113 acres in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, grows about 70 percent of its produce on the property and built a cottage from the wood cleared at the site. Guests receive reusable sandals in the spa, but in the rooms, visitors will find plusher designs that they are encouraged to take home and reuse; about half do and the rest are discarded.

“The problem is, it’s one of those things that people have come to expect,” said Heather Smith Winkelmann, the managing director of the resort.

Ivan Bauza is the director of sales and marketing at the Setai , a luxury hotel in Miami Beach. “Our guests are very demanding and expect everything brand-new,” he said, adding that amenities like full-size bottles of shampoo and slippers that are intended for guests to take home — occasionally including trendy models from the boutique brand Brunch — “shows the luxury aspect” of hospitality.

‘Rethinking’ slippers

The waste associated with disposable slippers is sizable, according to Mr. Legrand of IU, who calculated that high-end hotels in the United States with an average occupancy of 63 percent might discard more than 10 million pairs of slippers a month.

In a 2018 study, Chekitan S. Dev, a professor in the hospitality school at Cornell University, tracked 50 hotel amenities to determine how much they were used. Only 27 percent of guests used bathrobes supplied in the rooms. “We didn’t study slippers, but can safely assume that as many, or a few more, use slippers, especially as they are often unpacked and placed at bedside during turndown service, encouraging their use,” Mr. Dev said.

Hotel cleaning standards often dictate discarding slippers that have been removed from their packaging, according to members of Unite Here, the union that represents hotel housekeepers.

“Waste from hotel slippers may seem minor when compared to larger issues like energy consumption, food waste or water usage,” Mr. Legrand wrote. “However, at the end of the day, every bit of waste adds up and increasing attention is being paid to these aspects as part of a broader sustainable industry approach.”

Sourcing greener footwear

Hotel companies that have made commitments to banning single-use plastics have blazed a trail to more eco-friendly slippers.

Six Senses , a collection of 23 high-end resorts, offers slippers made from natural materials like jute or bamboo, or from recycled plastic. Six Senses Crans-Montana in Switzerland stocks Kaaita felt slippers made from recycled plastic bottles that can be washed and reused or recycled at the end of their life span. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group phased out single-use slippers in 2022 and replaced them with models made of cardboard, cork and cotton that are cleaned and restocked in the rooms. The Dorian, Autograph Collection hotel in Calgary, Canada, stopped supplying disposable slippers in the hotel’s suites in favor of upgraded ones that are thicker and more durable; they are available on demand to guests in other rooms. Patrons are encouraged to take them home for “multiple uses rather than single use,” wrote Ian Jones, the general manager, in an email.

Green Key , which vets hotels for sustainability practices, suggests hotels make slippers and other single-use amenities available on request, rather than mandating elimination. In keeping with its commitment to eliminate single-use plastics, the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina only supplies slippers to guests who ask for them.

Few slipper-supplying resorts go as far to reduce footwear waste as Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali. At its on-site Sustainability Lab, which turns glass bottles into drinking glasses and old umbrellas into tote bags, shredded slipper parts become stuffing for bean bag chairs.

“By closing the loop on waste, we are creating a circular economy,” said Morgan Martinello, the resort’s general manager.

Refuse or reuse

Will travelers start bringing their own slippers the way they carry their own water bottles and shopping bags? They might have to.

“We are having many a debate about slippers, pens, cotton balls, toiletries,” said Oliver Milne-Watson, the general manager of the Newman , a luxury hotel set to open later this year in London. The rooms will not contain single-use plastics though the management has found it difficult to find a satisfying reusable slipper.

“We’re asking, ‘Can we make this with something with a longer life cycle and if not do we really need it?’” Mr. Milne-Watson said.

Experts doubt the needle on slippers will fully swing until travelers speak up.

“We are at the stage now with this as it was with food waste a few years ago,” Mr. LaGrand, the IU professor, said. “It is when we start monitoring, measuring and quantifying both the cost of sourcing and wasting that the realization kicks in: We must do something about it!”

They are already on the minds of some travelers.

“I’ve contemplated how short of a life span these tend to have in the past, and now I’ve gotten into the habit of taking my used pair with me when I leave the hotel,” said Karla Cobreiro, 33, a publicist based in Miami. She puts them in a carry-on alongside a sleep mask and other essentials. “Now I slip into them on long flights.”

Tom Cahalan in St Barths recently

Today’s top private travel agents spend months on the road, road-testing trips or meeting property-owners and hoteliers at conferences, including the International Luxury Travel Market events. For clients who want to be the first to check-in, they have to keep ahead of new openings - and when to drop a property that has lost its magic. Some charge membership fees, none of them advertise. If they have websites, they contain almost no information on them. But if you can find one that will take you on, they will deploy infinite amounts of personal charm to get you into the world's most desirable hotel suites and villas.

Some work for just one family, others for a handful of clients. London-based Earth states on its website that membership is ‘currently restricted to recommendations from existing clients or by invitation’. I know of one who was fought over in a divorce settlement. (The wife won.)

According to Deloitte last year, the luxury market - already worth $1.3 trillion - is set to grow by 7.6 % until 2030. While the concept of private travel agents started with Bill Fischer in the 1970s, their numbers are expanding fast.

And the career path? Often, it's completely unorthodox. For those on the U.S. West Coast, a stint in the entertainment industry is often a springboard. In some dynasties, it can be a keen grandchild who starts organizing travel for the family. In Europe, particularly Britain, private agents often start in high-end tour operators including Cazenove & Loyd and Black Tomato . However, no private travel agent has made the leap that Tom Cahalan has. After creating a highly successful ecommerce site for clothing retailers in 2013, he started blogging about his holidays. Paying his own way, his pithy critiques became cult reading in the hospitality industry. Interest in the blog posts led Cahalan to set up Dorsia Travel (named after the fictional restaurant in American Psycho where it’s impossible to get a reservation) in 2017 with his wife Lucie.

One Of The Best Robin Williams Comedies Ever Made Lands On Netflix Today

Drake and kendrick lamar feud timeline lamar drops second diss track 6 16 in la, outlander finally comes to netflix with an incredible new season.

Let’s start with the blog. Why did you set it up? The Good, The Bad And The Luxurious was just a hobby at first and nobody knew anything about me so I enjoyed being brutally honest. Then I started to gain a following perhaps because there were so few platforms back then where the reviewer was remaining totally anonymous and paying their own way.

Soneva Jani in the Maldives

You always paid for your stays.

I’m glad I’m not beholden to anyone. I don’t want to write mean things for no good reason, but people pay lots of money to stay in these hotels so sharing honest feedback with readers and Dorsia Travel’s clients are always my priority. It isn’t always the done thing in Britain, where Dorsia Travel is based, to be so upfront with negative feedback. I wrote about a number of my main hotel bugbears recently, and things guaranteed to annoy me include a charge for water or overly fussy staff who check up on you every three to four minutes.

Your reviews became cult reading for their trenchant opinions. How did hotels react?

I’ve only been banned from one hotel - a few years back I stayed at Sirai Beach in Kenya and loved it but I highlighted a few things I felt could be improved. When I wanted to stay in its sister property Sirai House I learned the owners didn’t want me to stay as they didn’t want to see anything critical about that property - one of their homes - on the internet. Given they had decided to commercialize these residences I thought their inability to accept criticism from paying customers was a bit pathetic, but ultimately I don’t mind if people are unhappy with my reviews as they’re always fair and honest. I thought Italy's Il Pellicano was hideous even though lots of people revere it. And I hated every single thing about Nairobi’s Giraffe Manor but it is completely booked out so I can’t imagine they’re concerned about my review .

The Bulgari hotel in Paris

Now you have a wife and young family, how has that affected your travel?

Since Lucie and I had our two daughters, aged one and three, holidays are a lot louder but it has really broadened our focus at Dorsia Travel. We always dealt with families, but now we’re even more attuned to parents’ needs because we know firsthand just how cautious you need to be when you’ve got little accident-magnets roaming around a property. We’re also much more likely to travel to beach resorts and exclusive-use properties - handily, alongside family travel and safaris these are two of our other specialisms at Dorsia Travel. We’re also really appreciative of hotels that show they genuinely care about children and their parents. I love places where under-5s eat free, for example, because it seems so wasteful to pay inflated prices for dishes they’re going to spill on the floor rather than eat - we were so unimpressed at Bulgari Paris when we were charged €102 for a portion of fish for our eldest when she was only a year old.

Velaa private island in the Maldives

And you now have a travel agency, Dorsia Travel? How did that start?

My wife Lucie previously took care of VIP clients at The Connaught hotel in London. As my blog attracted increasing numbers of readers, more and more people asked for advice and then increasingly asked me to book their holidays so we realized we could combine her industry expertise and my hotel knowledge to give hands-on assistance to the community of people that grew around the blog. It’s been an enjoyable process because we traveled at the same level as them before we started working as travel agents, and we still do now. And we’re hands-on for every part of the process - we oversee every aspect of every booking personally. What’s sometimes challenging now is explaining to clients how ridiculously expensive a lot of hotels - particularly in Europe and the US - have become. We don’t charge fees, but our clients spend a minimum of $5,000 a night - you’d think it goes far but then at the highest end of the market you have places like Italy’s Villa Treville Positano charging €9,800 for a 61 sqm suite this summer.

The Zeffirelli Suite at the Villa Treville Positano

How has your travel changed now?

I’m off to One&Only Kea Island in Greece soon and I expect it’ll be nice but I doubt it’ll be exciting. I’m also planning a trip to the new Soneva Secret. I feel it’s unlikely to be too different from the other two Sonevas in the Maldives but I want to have first-hand knowledge of all the major properties in the country so I can advise our clients. These days I prefer to stay at exclusive-use properties that are less known - I’m going to Ol Jogi wildlife conservancy and seeing the work they’re doing to help protect wildlife is much more enjoyable to me than going to another generic luxury resort.

How do you cope with honest feedback from your guests

Regarding feedback, of course we’re fine with it! Usually it’s great, but of course there are times when a hotel doesn’t deliver as expected - and for the amount of money people pay to stay at the world’s top hotels it’s unacceptable if things go seriously wrong. If that happens, we want to know about it as soon as possible so we can immediately intervene to make things right while they just focus on enjoying their holiday.

Traveler Compliance

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is taking proactive steps to ensure travelers comply with their terms of admission by sending reminders about time left in the United States, and notifications to travelers who may have overstayed their period of admission. The reminders and notifications are sent to travelers via e-mail.

Travelers may receive an e-mail indicating they have 10 days or less remaining on their admission into the United States, or an e-mail regarding a potential overstay violation. CBP has established an easy to use traveler compliance check that is available on the I-94 website. Travelers may check their admission status at https://I94.cbp.dhs.gov and clicking on the ‘View Compliance’ tab.

E-mail notifications will come from [email protected] . If your notification e-mail did not come from this address, it may be a phishing scam or other fraudulent e-mail.

Travelers in-scope for the e-mail notification process will begin with certain Visa Waiver Program (VWP) travelers and will gradually expand to include most classes of admission. As additional in-scope travelers are included in the process, the ‘View Compliance’ tab will be updated. You can check this tab to see if you are eligible for the compliance check.

While e-mail notification is a new process, there is no change in CBP’s policies or enforcement actions. This proactive approach only changes how transparent CBP’s work is to the traveling public, and helps ensure the public stays in compliance with their terms of admission.

Metro Phoenix drivers can expect weekend highway closures on I-10, Loop 101, and more

Metro Phoenix drivers traveling between Phoenix, Tempe and Chandler this weekend should expect notable closures and detours, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation's weekend freeway travel advisory.

The westbound Interstate 10 will be closed between Loop 202 and U.S. 60 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for paving and bridge work, and the southbound Loop 101 will be closed between Guadalupe and Ray roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, among other closures in the Valley.

Watch the detour video for more on closures and how to avoid them.

Westbound I-10 closed between Loop 202 and US 60

A detour will be available using the eastbound Loop 202 to northbound Loop 101, to westbound U.S. 60 or westbound Loop 202 to access westbound I-10 beyond the closure.

The advisory said drivers heading to the West Valley can avoid the I-10 closure by using the Loop 202 west and north to connect with the I-10 at 59th Avenue.

Between Broadway Road and 48th Street, the westbound I-10 will be narrowed to three lanes.

Additional ramps will be closed as well:

  • The westbound I-10 on-ramps at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard/Sundust Road, Chandler Boulevard and Ray, Warner and Elliot Roads.
  • The westbound Loop 202 ramp to westbound I-10
  • The eastbound Loop 202 ramp to westbound I-10
  • The westbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road

Southbound Loop 101 closed between Guadalupe and Ray roads

Southbound Loop 101 will be closed between Guadalupe and Ray Roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Both U.S. 60 on-ramps to southbound Loop 101 will be closed, as well as the on-ramps at Broadway and Baseline Roads.

A detour is available by exiting ahead of the closure and using the southbound Price frontage road before connecting with southbound Loop 101 beyond the closure. Other local routes include southbound Dobson Road or McClintock Drive, according to the advisory.

US 60 lanes narrowed near Wittmann

U.S. 60 will be narrowed to one lane in both directions between 163rd Avenue and Center Street from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday, and again from 11 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday for pavement sealing work.

The Deer Valley Road connection to the U.S. 60 will be closed as well.

Westbound U.S. 60 drivers can use the northbound Loop 303 to northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway and westbound State Route 74. Eastbound U.S. 60 drivers from Wickenburg can consider using eastbound State Route 74 to southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway and southbound Loop 303 to reach the U.S. 60.

Local drivers near 163rd Avenue can consider alternate routes including eastbound Happy Valley Road to access Loop 303/Happy Valley Parkway.

State Route 87 to be briefly closed

State Route 87 will be briefly closed between Lindsay and Stapley Drives periodically between these times:

  • 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday
  • Noon Saturday to noon Sunday
  • 8 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday

The closures are for a Western Area Power Administration project, and law enforcement will be on-site for intermittent closures of up to 15 minutes each time, according to the advisory.

More travel options for commuters starting Friday after US 50 bridge closure

travel websites status

GUNNISON COUNTY, Colo. — Officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) are trying to offer more travel options for commuters to get between Gunnison and Montrose.

The US 50 bridge connecting the two towns has closed after inspectors found cracks in the bridge. Drivers had limited access to County Road 26 to get between the towns.

Starting Friday, the dirt road will be open four times a day. Openings will be staggered throughout each day because traffic will only be able to move one way on the narrow road.

Nude cruise to set sail from Florida next year: Here are the starting costs, itinerary

travel websites status

The "Big Nude Boat" cruise, which allows passengers to bare all − yes, even at the buffet − is set to sail from Florida next year.

The "11-day adventure" to the Caribbean is set for the first two weeks of February on the Norwegian Pearl, according to the Bare Necessities Tour & Travel website.

"Bare Necessities’ newest nude cruise is a private island double-dip with a brand new travel partner!" the company wrote on its website.

The trip which embarks from Miami, includes "an exclusive visit to an idyllic private island" in The Bahamas as well a another exclusive stop on the way back to the Port of Miami.

"Two opportunities to enjoy a new slice of Bare-adise, coupled with a beautiful selection of Eastern Caribbean island stops, will make this a can’t miss Big Nude Boat experience," the travel company posted.

Why cruises are popular with swingers: 'What happens on the ship ... stays on the ship'

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

Big Nude Boat cruise sailing dates and destinations:

The ship departs from the Port of Miami on Feb. 3 and returns to the same port on Feb. 14.

The itinerary includes stops at the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia.

How much does the Big Nude Boat cruise cost?

Rates for an inside cabin start at $2,000 per person.

They stretch as high as $33,155 for the top room on the ship: a Haven three-bedroom garden villa.

Laws of the land (and sea)

Guests are encouraged to park their bare behinds on towels provided on board in areas including the pool deck and the buffet area, according to the website.

"Passengers can easily follow our rule on nudist etiquette by always placing a towel down before sitting," it reads. "Remember to pack a swimsuit; not all excursions are clothing optional."

Status of the stocks: Record-low number of stocks on overfishing list in 2023

Ongoing positive trends continued into last year.

In a report released today, NOAA Fisheries announced that 2023 saw a record low for the number of fish stocks subject to overfishing. The annual  Status of the Stocks report is an assessment of the 506 stocks and stock complexes managed by NOAA Fisheries, and provides a look at the overall health of fisheries in the U.S. Maintaining sustainable fisheries contributes significantly to the U.S. economy, provides important recreational opportunities and helps meet the growing challenge of increasing our nation's seafood supply.

In 2023, U.S. fisheries data revealed that 94% of stocks are not subject to overfishing and 82% are not overfished . These numbers show slight improvements compared to the 2022 figures of 93% and 81%, respectively. Ongoing positive trends continued with the number of stocks on the overfishing list decreasing by three stocks, reaching an all-time low of 21 stocks, and the number of stocks on the overfished list decreasing by one stock, to 47. Since 2000, NOAA Fisheries has rebuilt 50 stocks.

Image showing that of the more than 506 stocks and stock complexes managed by NOAA, 364 have a known overfishing status (343 not subject to overfishing and 21 subject to overfishing) and 263 have a known overfished status (216 not overfished and 47 overfished).

“By ending overfishing and rebuilding stocks, we are strengthening the value of U.S. fisheries to the economy, our communities and marine ecosystems,” said NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D. “Sustainably managed fisheries are important to the nation’s economy, and provide opportunities for commercial, recreational and subsistence fishing, while keeping a renewable supply of seafood for consumers.”

NOAA Fisheries recently released the Fisheries Economics of the United States report for 2022. The latest data shows U.S. commercial and recreational fishing supported 2.3 million jobs and generated $321 billion in sales across the broader economy in 2022. The U.S. commercial fishing and seafood industry, as well as recreational fishing, continue to have a broad, positive impact on the economy.

“Managing fisheries sustainably is an adaptive process that relies on sound science, innovative management approaches, effective enforcement and meaningful partnerships with robust public participation,” said NOAA Fisheries Assistant Administrator Janet Coit. “We continually adjust management measures in response to complex challenges including climate change, rebuilding stocks, ending overfishing and developing new forecasting tools to better predict ocean conditions.”

To keep U.S. fisheries operating sustainably, NOAA Fisheries partners with the U.S. Regional Fishery Management Councils offsite link and Interstate Fisheries Commissions, for dynamic, science-based management processes that are proving successful at ending overfishing and rebuilding stocks.

Since 1996, NOAA Fisheries has reported on the status of U.S. fisheries, as required by the Magnuson-Stevens Act . Reporting on the status of fish stocks provides fisheries managers and the public with an account of how well current fisheries management measures are working.

Climate, weather, and water affect all life on our ocean planet.  NOAA’s mission  is to understand and predict our changing environment, from the deep sea to outer space, and to manage and conserve America’s coastal and marine resources.
