A month-by-month guide to the cheapest flights to international destinations

Jordan Waller

Airfare prices change regularly throughout the year, but if you know where to look, it's possible to find a bargain to even the most popular destinations — especially if you're able to be flexible with your travel dates.

TPG reached out to Skyscanner to trawl through their vast amount of airfare data and give you a comprehensive look at the destinations around the world that typically cost less to fly to. Whether you're looking to depart from the United States or from the United Kingdom, plenty of sweet spots can be found.

Below are destinations that are consistently priced low throughout the year and destinations that regularly pop up with cheaper airfares during specific months.

*All pricing taken from economy class, round-trip bookings made on Skyscanner for travel in 2022.

Which destinations are the cheapest to fly to year-round?

While certain destinations can be cheaper on average throughout the whole year, others fluctuate, and not always in the ways you might think.

For example, if you're based in the U.S. and dream of flying to Europe for your next vacation, the best prices for most European locations were in April, May and June, according to Skyscanner's data on the average cost of a return economy flight. This is true, according to that data, even though this time is normally considered a peak travel time for the region and coincides with the U.K. school holidays.

However, while you may be able to pick up cheaper airfare during this time, prices for hotels and attractions may be higher during these periods.

Meanwhile, the average return flights to London were at their lowest at the beginning of the year, between January and March. Note this can be a notoriously drizzly and cold time to visit the U.K. capital (though, let's face it, England isn't really known for its great weather at the best of times).

The next cheapest period to visit London from the U.S. was perhaps surprisingly between October and December. Again, this is during the colder months, but still great news for those looking for a potential Christmas escape to take advantage of some of the Thanksgiving and fall breaks in the U.S.

For travelers based in the U.K., we found airfares to destinations in Italy to be consistently among the top 10 cheapest throughout the year. Despite its popularity among British travelers, Greece didn't break the top 10 once for the cheapest average airfares.

Cheapest places to fly from January through March

Traveling from the us.

January through March saw the lowest average prices of the year for flights departing the U.S. to London and Paris, with the French capital coming in a smidgen cheaper to get to. If you take advantage of the convenient Eurostar links between these two European cities, you could easily hit both of these destinations during this period for less than you'd pay any other time.

If you decide to do both, we suggest returning to the U.S. from Paris to avoid the U.K.'s notoriously high fees and taxes on airfares.

Average airfare prices to Puerto Rico from the U.S. were among the cheapest during these months in 2022. January is also an ideal time to visit Puerto Rico, thanks to the dryer winter months with moderate temperatures and far less rainfall than you'll see during other times in the year.

Closer to home, this period is also a great time to visit Mexico , where you can enjoy much dryer and cooler temperatures.

Traveling from the UK

If you don't mind wrapping up to stay warm, you can bag plenty of great deals to Europe departing the U.K., but be warned that some places can be chilly during the winter months.

For example, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, can see temperatures dropping as low as 34 Fahrenheit (1.3 Celsius) in January and only just peaking over 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) in March.

Riga, Latvia, sees even lower temperatures, regularly plummetting to around 24 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) between January and February and peaking at around 33 Fahrenheit (1 Celsius) in March.

If you're looking for sun, Palma, Mallorca, is your best bet. The first months of the year generally still see days filled with sunshine. It won't necessarily be hot enough to top up your tan and enjoy a beach break, though — temperatures mainly float around the 61 Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) mark.

Cheapest places to fly from April through June

If you're considering a European vacation , these months pulled up cheaper airfares than any other, according to Skyscanner data, with good average prices for Spain, France, Portugal and the U.K. While each of these locations will begin seeing sunnier weather throughout June, you can still expect blues skies and bouts of sunshine during April too.

It is, however, worth doing some research before you book — U.K. schools break for Easter in the first half of April and again at the beginning of June for the summer half-term break. During these times, you can expect many European locations to be busy with family vacations and often see soaring accommodation prices. If you can, we'd recommend booking outside of these weeks to save on both money and time spent queuing due to increased numbers of other tourists.

Looking for something more far-flung? Tokyo has great average airfare prices during the spring, and if you time it properly, you could also witness Japan's beautiful cherry blossom season, which typically peaks in early April.

This is one of the prime times to visit Italy and take in the sights before its summer hits full throttle in July, bringing with it almost prohibitively high temperatures. Visits between April and June are perfect for soaking up the sun, alfresco dining and diving into this country's rich history.

Sicily, in particular, is excellent at this time of the year. However, note that it might get a little too hot for some as June approaches, especially if this year's wildfires and extreme weather are anything to go by.

If Dubrovnik, Croatia, has been on your list for some time but now feels a little too in vogue and expensive, you could also get good prices on flights to Zadar . This charming seaside city is situated on the Dalmatian Coast and is known for its fantastic restaurant and dining scene, with an array of stunning nearby national parks.

Cheapest places to fly from July through September

For those yearning to visit Canada outside of its harsh winter periods, July through September can be an ideal time to enjoy a summer vacation. Toronto bursts to life during the Toronto Jazz Festival and Toronto Fringe Festival in July — perfect for culture vultures.

You can get good prices on flights to Mexico between July and September. While these months bring slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures, they also mark Mexico's rainy season, typically from late August to September.

Conversely, if you've always had Peru on your bucket list, this can be a great time to visit.

It's the country's driest season — fantastic conditions if you plan to hike to Machu Picchu. According to Skyscanner's data, you can typically find good prices on flights to Peru during these months. However, note that if you plan to travel to Machu Picchu from Lima, you must either get a connecting flight to Cusco or take a long bus ride.

September can be one of the best periods to visit Ireland during its shoulder season. Along with good deals on airfare, you'll also typically see cheaper accommodation costs and fewer crowds. The weather can also be fairly mild during these months with good dry spells, though it likely won't be shorts and T-shirt weather.

Mid-August through to September also sees much milder weather in Italy and can be a preferable month to visit than July and August, which are the hottest months of the year and the most crowded with tourists.

Elsewhere in Europe, July onward is a great time to take advantage of good weather in France.

According to Skyscanner data, Rodez, France, is one of the cheapest places on average to fly to from the U.K. during these months. It also sees high temperatures and lots of sunshine. The mercury is typically around 77 Fahrenheit (25 Celsius) in July and August before dropping off to a more manageable 69.8 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) average in September.

Cheapest places to fly from October through December

There are great prices on airfares to Mexico from October through December, and these months are also a particularly intriguing time to visit.

Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations typically take place Nov. 1-2. The festival is an opportunity to honor deceased family members, and there is a wide array of celebrations throughout Mexico, making this a memorable and enlightening time to visit and learn about Mexican traditions.

If you keep your eyes peeled, it's also possible to get low-priced airfares to Iceland, allowing for a festive visit to Reykavik to take in the snow alongside a healthy jolt of Christmas spirit.

Visit London to see the city decorated for the festivities as it gears up for the holidays and New Year celebrations. Sure, it'll be cold and the weather occasionally unwieldy, but it's a magical time to visit the U.K. capital.

Related: These are the best Christmas markets in Europe

For U.K. travelers looking for an affordable winter getaway, cast your eyes toward Italy, where the weather, though much milder than in the earlier months of the year, is still quite the contrast to the climate at home if you pick the right destination.

For example, Sicily will feel much closer to the U.K. spring weather. Other areas, such as Milan or Venice, won't be quite as warm but still make for great locations for romantic winter getaways on the continent.

Bottom line

While airfare prices fluctuate, they don't always follow the expected patterns you might guess. Based on Skyscanner's data from last year, you might be surprised by how much cheaper certain destinations in some months compared to others — especially airfares to Europe from the United States during summer when one might expect higher costs.

Similarly, from the U.K., Italy is generally fairly cheap to fly to if you look in the right places. By looking further afield to places like Rodez, France, or Zadar in Croatia, you might even visit somewhere that's commonly overlooked by other tourists wishing to visit better-known cities such as Paris or Dubrovnik.

The 18 Cheapest Places to Travel in 2022

Plan an exciting vacation without spending an arm and a leg.

places to travel with cheap flights

Looking to catch a cheap flight this year? Kayak , one of the world's leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of the cheapest places to travel this year.

To determine the most wallet-friendly destinations, Kayak analyzed the searches for flights from Nov. 20, 2020, through Nov. 19, 2021, for travel between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022. Kayak then considered the top 100 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average flight price, excluding outliers based on criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns.

Fly against the grain and get rewarded with major savings.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico makes the list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022. The country has long ranked as an affordable and easy-to-reach destination for many Americans; reasonably priced direct flights are abundant.

Within Mexico, San José del Cabo (in Baja California Sur), Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún come out on top as the cheapest places to fly, with January being the most affordable month to visit for each. Fortunately, January is nothing short of glorious in each of these beachy destinations — warm, balmy, and filled with rich colors, textures, and flavors to beat the winter blues.

Searching for a city break instead of a beach retreat? Mexico City, with its rich Aztec heritage and generous smattering of museums, is another affordable option in Mexico. May is the cheapest month to book a flight there.

Chicago, Illinois

Who wants to visit Chicago in winter? You will, once you see the rock-bottom prices you can score in January and all there is to do in this Midwest winter wonderland. Spend an afternoon on the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, then warm up with a slice of deep-dish pizza.

Colombia is a beloved travel destination for its rich history, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food. It's also well priced against what many Americans are used to paying for, say, a fresh arepa and cup of Colombian coffee.

February is the least expensive month to fly to the country's capital, Bogotá. The weather here is chilly, but not too cold to stroll the painstakingly maintained Bogotá Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1955 and is filled with almost 20,000 plants (and costs just over $1 USD to enter).

In January, head to Cartagena, a port city on the country's Caribbean coast. You don't have to spend much to enjoy your time here — simply walking the picturesque streets is enough for most visitors.

Nashville, Tennessee

There's a reason bachelorette parties and reunions of every sort flock in droves to the Music City — it's not hard to have a boot-scootin' time on a budget. Mural-hopping is free, hot chicken will only set you back a few bucks, and there's lots of live music to be heard (free of cover charge) along Honky Tonk Highway . January is the cheapest month to book.

New York City, New York

New York City isn't known for being a cheap destination, but go in January and you'll get the best prices they've got. The city never sleeps, but it does slow down during the cold winter months — the perfect time for you to swoop in and take advantage of the decreased demand for flights and hotel rooms. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do in New York City , too.

Mexico isn't our only neighboring country with deals aplenty — Canada also makes for an easy getaway, with well-priced flights widely available from most of the U.S.

In Montréal, Quebec, the must-try food is the steamé — the city's take on a hot dog — served steamed in a side-loading bun (which is also steamed). It's the perfect food to gobble up during freezing February, when the flights are cheapest. Best of all, each delicious (and filling) hot dog will only set you back a couple of dollars.

February is also the cheapest month to fly to Toronto, Ontario. The weather may make you leery, but don't let it: During February, the annual installation of art and lights, known as the Toronto Light Festival (totally free), takes place in the walkable and historic Distillery District. It's also a good time for The Bentway Skate Trail under the Gardiner Expressway overpass, which will set you back only $5.

And while Vancouver, British Columbia, is gorgeous in the summertime, January is the cheapest month to fly there. Take the ferry for an affordable "tour" of the city from the water.

Atlanta, Georgia

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

Atlanta has all the big-city perks at prices far more wallet-friendly than most of its counterparts. Splurge on a SkyView Ferris wheel ride for views of Centennial Olympic Park and beyond, and go in January for the lowest possible prices. There are lots of things to do in Atlanta during this time of year, from visiting the marine animals at the Georgia Aquarium to learning about local history at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Baltimore, Maryland

Head to Charm City this year to keep costs low and still have a memorable travel experience. Chilly January may be the cheapest month to visit, but luckily, you can still check out places like the Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens ($5 donation encouraged) in the urban oasis of Druid Hill Park.

San José, Costa Rica

The capital and largest city of Costa Rica, San José is a must-visit for any intrepid traveler. Expect Victorian mansions, nightlife in El Pueblo, lots of culture, and surrounding historic coffee plantations.

Check out the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum for a glimpse into what it might look like to have an unlimited jewelry budget. Admission is $15 for non-residents, but offers access to more than 1,500 gold objects and artifacts. Head to San José in May for the cheapest airfare to this lively (and affordable) city.

Dallas, Texas

This year, visit Dallas outside of Cowboys football season — like in January, when prices are at their lowest. During this time, you can expect more reasonable rates, but still get in on the sports action by catching a home game for the Mavericks (basketball) or the Stars (hockey).

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, but if you prefer to devote the majority of your dollars to slots and shows rather than airfare and accommodations, go in January. Just don't expect hot temps, as even the desert gets cold in the winter. Here are some more tips to keep in mind and mistakes to avoid on your next trip to Sin City.

Panama City, Panama

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is an impressively modern Central American destination framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Panama Canal on another — best viewable from the Miraflores Locks. Visit in January for great flight deals, and don't miss the cobblestone streets of historic Casco Viejo.

Tampa, Florida

Florida as a destination is hotter than ever, but Tampa isn't as inundated with crowds as the state's other major cities — plus, its location on the western coast promises gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Go in January for a good deal, warm (but not sweltering) temps, and plenty of sunshine.

Hamilton, Bermuda

If January's chill has you dreaming of pink-sand beaches, you're in luck, as it's a great month to visit Bermuda. Fly into Hamilton and stroll Front Street for a peek at the pastel buildings that are iconic to this glitzy British island territory, but stick to window-shopping if you want to keep your trip cheap. Biking and beach-hopping are the name of the game here.

Boston, Massachusetts

January may be the cheapest month to fly to Boston, but it's not the best season for strolling its idyllic Common or touring the Freedom Trail. Luckily, many stops along the historic route are indoors — and cheap (like the Paul Revere House, which is just $6 per adult).

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is another popular destination for American travelers. January is the least expensive month to visit the two most affordable cities to fly into: Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Though Santo Domingo is the country's capital, it doesn't have to be an expensive visit. Take in the architecture that dates back to the late 1400s and stroll the Colonial Zone for a memorable (and free) experience.

Punta Cana, on the other hand, is known as a tourist hot spot with plenty of resorts (and ways to spend lots of money). However, some of life's greatest treasures — like sandy beaches and waterfall hikes — are as free in Punta Cana as they are anywhere else.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

You don't need a passport to fly to St. Thomas, but you'll have a hard time believing this jaw-dropping, colorful island is technically U.S. soil. Make sure to visit Magens Bay, climb the 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie, and marvel at the sheer blueness of the water surrounding this popular cruise ship port. Go in January for the best flight prices; you'll be glad for the savings when you see what accommodations cost on this luxurious island.

Denver, Colorado

Denver has a ton to do, even in January, which is the cheapest month to visit. Hitting the slopes is hard to do at a discount (unless you go in the summer to hike instead of ski), but at least you'll save money on airfare if you visit Denver during this snowy month.

Several factors go into any flight booking, and you’ll need to keep an eye out for them all to ensure that you get the travel time, luggage policy, airline, and class you want. Consider which airport is closest to your ultimate destination (travelers to Los Angeles may prefer flights to LAX over flights to PSP , and make sure that the flight will accommodate all the luggage you plan on bringing. Additionally, consider the different flight classes including economy flights for functionality and premium flights if you want to enjoy a more relaxing experience.

Where’s the cheapest place to travel?

The cheapest place to travel can be in the same country, like Chicago. Flights to Chicago are fairly affordable no matter where you’re coming from in the continental United States. Flights to Las Vegas tend to be pretty affordable as well. While the Vegas airport isn’t a hub for any major airline, it does have plenty of competition to keep prices relatively low.

Where can I fly for cheap?

Staying within a strict budget still allows you to find plenty of cheap flights, even to destinations like Puerto Rico. In fact, flights to Puerto Rico don’t even require U.S. citizens to have a passport. Flights to Alberta and other destinations in Canada can be fairly affordable as well.

Is it cheaper to buy flights last minute?

Flight tickets can be cheaper at the last minute depending on how late you’re actually booking, where you’re going, and the kind of flight you opt for. For domestic flights with Economy tickets, prices usually start to increase 3 weeks before departure, and 4 weeks for international flights, according to historical data*.

Are fully refundable flights available?

Yes, several fully refundable flights are available and will be labeled as such right on your search results page in green text. You may also filter for fully refundable flights specifically to eliminate all flights from your results that don’t qualify. Just make sure to check the specific policy for each flight before booking.

Why should I book my flight with Expedia?

Booking with Expedia makes finding a flight easy, but that’s just the beginning of everything you can take advantage of. We also offer hotels, car rentals, and even activities that you can purchase with package deals available for travelers planning more than one aspect of their trip at a time. Plus, Expedia offers stunning cheap flight deals that can help you save with ease. The 12 Best Websites for Booking Flights at the Cheapest Prices [April 2024]

Book Direct Through the Airline’s Website

Searching for a flight can be a bit overwhelming. There are so many factors: dates, times, price, fare class, airline, and more. Even when you know exactly when and where you want to fly, where should you look for the absolute best price?

Unfortunately, no website consistently has the lowest prices. Most of the popular OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) are usually in the same ballpark for the price, but not all offer the same benefits or search functionality.

We’ve combed through many popular OTAs to compare prices and show you the benefits and drawbacks of each site.

More often than not, booking directly through the airline’s website will give you the best price, or will at least be the same as the OTAs.

Some airlines, like Southwest, won’t even show up on sites like Expedia or Orbitz, so you have to book direct. It can also be the most simple way to book. If a problem arises, you don’t have to deal with a third party to get it resolved.

Another reason to book directly through an airline’s website is to use those frequent flyer miles — hooray for award flights!

Of course, to book through the airline’s website, you first need to know which airline has the best prices. There are lots of travel search engines and OTAs that can help you find the best deals so you know which airline’s website to visit. Some OTAs even offer perks that might make it worth booking someplace other than the airline’s site.

Hot Tip: A card such as The Platinum Card ® from American Express earns an impressive 5x Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or with  AmexTravel.com on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year.

Momondo is a travel metasearch engine similar to Kayak. The home page displays a simple search box where you can plug in your travel details.

One of the things we love about this site is the visual way it shows you the price trends for your flight. At first glance, you can tell if you could save some money by shifting around your travel dates a bit. It also offers a price tracker and lots of filtering options on the left-hand side of the screen.

Monmodo flight search

Pros and Cons of Momondo

  • Great price tracking tools
  • Mix & Match fares require you to make 2 separate reservations; this is usually handled “behind the scenes” on other websites

Hot Tip: We cover the ins and outs of finding cheap airfare with this website in our guide to using Momondo .

Kayak is not an OTA. Rather, it’s a travel search engine — making it a great place to start your flight search.

The site compares prices from many websites in a single spot, so you can easily see the cheapest options . Most of the time, you’ll click through to a different site to complete your booking.

Kayak offers the ability to combine 2 one-way tickets (usually on different airlines) in 1 itinerary, which is a great way to save money on your flight. These itineraries can be pretty good deals and something that doesn’t always appear in search results of other websites.

A couple of new features were introduced in early 2024 — Kayak PriceCheck and Ask Kayak. Kayak PriceCheck allows you to upload a screenshot of an itinerary in the Kayak app, and Kayak will compare it to prices on hundreds of other sites to ensure you’re getting the best deal. Ask Kayak is an AI tool that helps you personalize your travel planning.

Pros and Cons of Kayak

  • Ability to combine 2 one-way flights on a single itinerary
  • Price Alerts to keep an eye on flight prices
  • Kayak PriceCheck
  • Kayak offers the most benefit when your travel plans are very flexible; many of its most valuable tools help you search for deals, so this site might be less appealing when you have a specific flight in mind

Bottom Line: For more information about Kayak’s travel search tools, check out the complete guide to booking travel with Kayak .

Daily Deals Special: Click here for up to 40% off at Expedia

Expedia is another tried-and-true OTA that people have been using since the 1990s. Back then, Expedia was a go-to source for searching and booking flights. But how does it stack up now?

You aren’t necessarily getting a better deal booking through Expedia, but you aren’t paying any more than you might on the airline’s website.

A nice perk of using Expedia is that it offers a rewards program called One Key. This program offers member pricing plus the ability to earn points for flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, activities, and more.

The One Key loyalty program is also used by Hotels.com and Vrbo.

If you’re a member of an airline’s frequent flyer program, you’ll be happy to know that you can still earn airline miles on a flight booked through Expedia . However, you often won’t be able to earn miles/points toward status or be eligible for seat upgrades.

Pros and Cons of Expedia

  • Earn and redeem points through the One Key program
  • Booking through Expedia may limit your mileage earned toward elite status
  • Your ability to be eligible for upgrades can be limited when you book through Expedia

Hot Tip:  For more information, check out our post about how to use Expedia to find great deals on flights, hotels, vacation packages (and more).

Priceline is a popular OTA that introduced the Name Your Own Price tool and opaque bookings. These types of bookings can offer discounts, but many of the details are hidden until after the booking. The Name Your Own Price tool was discontinued for flights in 2016, so now Priceline operates like most other OTAs .

One of the nice things about searching for flights on Priceline is that it has a nice color-coded calendar, so you can easily see which days offer the lowest prices.

Priceline color coded map

The search results on Priceline are clear and easy to navigate. As you scroll through your search results, you can easily see the cheapest nonstop options and things like flights with no change fees or early bird flights.

Priceline search results

Another way to save money is by looking at Priceline’s Express Deals . These opaque bookings are ones where select details of the flight (like the departure, arrival times, or even the airline) are hidden until the booking is complete.

Pros and Cons of Priceline

  • Express Deal flights can offer a good discount if you have some flexibility; many of the details of the flight, including airline and arrival and departure times, are hidden until the booking is complete
  • Color-coded calendar and easy-to-read search results
  • Price Match Guarantee
  • Free online cancellation within 24 hours of booking (except for Express Deal flights)
  • No rewards program
  • Express Deal flights can be good deals, but they can sometimes be even more expensive than a standard booking

Bottom Line: For more information, check out the complete guide to booking travel with Priceline .

Daily Deals Special: Check out Orbitz’s Daily Deals

Orbitz is another reliable OTA that has been around since 2001. One thing that makes this site a little different is that it offers its own rewards program called Orbitz Rewards . You can earn Orbucks when you book hotels, flights, and vacation packages through Orbitz. However, you can only redeem Orbucks for hotels.

When booking a flight through Orbitz, you’ll earn 1% of your purchase price back as Orbucks (or 2% if you use the Orbitz mobile app). If you book a $500 flight, you will earn 5 Orbucks, which is worth $5 toward a hotel booking. Joining the Orbitz Rewards program is free.

Earn Orbucks on flights

Unfortunately, Orbitz sometimes charges a 1% booking fee . Keep an eye out for these on your trip summary page before finalizing your purchase, and factor them into your calculations to see if you’re getting a good deal or not. While earning Orbucks is great, paying a booking fee could wipe out all of the benefits.

Orbitz booking fee

Pros and Cons of Orbitz

  • Orbitz Rewards lets you earn Orbucks that can be applied to hotel bookings
  • 24-hour cancellation policy
  • Low Price Guarantee: if you find a lower price for your flight on another website within 24 hours, Orbitz will refund the difference
  • Flight booking fees

Bottom Line: For more information, check out our guide to booking travel with Orbitz .

Agoda is an OTA owned by Priceline. This website doesn’t offer much more than a simple search with limited filter options when looking for flights. If you’re looking for unique accommodations such as an apartment or private villa, Agoda is worth checking out, but it doesn’t offer much when searching for flights.

One cool thing about Agoda is that the site is multilingual. You can select your language by clicking on the flag in the top menu bar.

Agoda

Pros and Cons of Agoda

  • Simple search functionality
  • Multilingual option
  • Limited filtering options for flights

Hot Tip: Agoda has a loyalty program called VIP, but it only applies to hotel stays. For more information, check out our guide to booking travel through Agoda .

Special: See these Hotwire Flight Deals

Hotwire is a popular OTA that has been around for almost 20 years.

The simple home page offers the main search box to input your departure and arrival cities as well as your desired dates of travel.

Hotwire can offer a great deal when booking a hotel along with your flight . Many times during the booking process, you’ll see pop-ups or prompts advertising great savings when booking a hotel at the same time. We tested it, and every time we priced out a Hotwire vacation package deal against purchasing a flight and hotel separately, the package deal was cheaper.

Hotwire flight and hotel deals

Bottom Line: If you need a hotel in addition to your flight, booking both together through Hotwire can save you money.

Another thing to remember when using Hotwire to find great flight deals is that sometimes a booking fee will be charged.

Pros and Cons of Hotwire

  • Package deals that include a hotel stay can save money
  • Low Price Guarantee
  • Hotwire can sometimes charge a booking fee

Bottom Line: For more details about finding great deals, check out our complete guide to booking travel through Hotwire .

Skyscanner is another travel search engine that does not sell flights directly. It shows you a list of flights and links to the airline’s website or OTA to complete the purchase.

This site excels for travelers with flexibility . In the search box, you can select Explore everywhere  to search for the cheapest destinations on your chosen dates.

Skyscanner search option

If you have a set destination with specific dates, Skyscanner operates like most other travel search sites.

Pros and Cons of Skyscanner

  • Flexible searches, including Explore everywhere  and Multi-city search
  • Easy to change language and currency
  • Price alerts

Hot Tip:  For more information, check out our in-depth piece on Skyscanner .

Travelocity is yet another OTA that has been around for a while and is very similar to the other websites we’ve been looking at.

On the plus side, there are some nice filtering options to help you find the best flight for your needs. On the downside, prices can change between selection and booking. We did a dummy booking, and by the time we got to the payment section, the flight price had gone up from $157 to $338!

Travelocity flight price change

Much like other online travel agencies, Travelocity can also charge booking fees, so keep an eye out for those in the payment section of the booking process.

Travelocity booking fee

Pros and Cons of Travelocity

  • Price Guarantee: If you find a lower price on an identical itinerary within 24 hours, Travelocity will refund the difference in price
  • Free cancellation on flights within 24 hours of booking (on most airlines)
  • Travelocity sometimes charges a booking fee
  • Prices can change between flight selection and payment

Bottom Line: For more information, check out our guide to booking travel with Travelocity .

Google Flights is not an OTA. Rather, it’s a metasearch engine similar to Kayak. Once you find a flight, Google Flights will link you to the airline’s direct website or an OTA to complete the purchase. It is a powerful search engine built on the ITA Matrix , which was originally developed for travel agents.

This site shows you price trends and how your travel dates could affect the cost of your ticket. Plus, it allows you to track the prices of a route , so you can jump on low prices when they pop up. These features make Google Flights a great tool to help you feel confident that the price you’re getting is a good deal.

Google Flights Price Graph

Google Flights recently rolled out a price guarantee feature on select flights departing from the U.S. If you book a flight with the price guarantee badge and the price drops, you’ll get a refund of the difference (with a maximum of $500 per calendar year) from Google Flights via Google Pay. However, you can only receive up to 3 price guaranteed refunds at any one time.

Google Flights price guarantee

Pros and Cons of Google Flights

  • Price graph shows you the pricing trends for your route and allows you to see what days might be cheaper to fly
  • Price tracking will send you an email when your flight’s price increases or decreases
  • Automatic price guarantee on select flights
  • Since this search engine is so powerful with lots of options, it could get complicated for a novice traveler

Hot Tip: You can earn frequent flyer miles on flights booked through an OTA, but you might not earn miles toward elite status.

CheapOair is an OTA that offers its own credit card. Before applying for the card, we recommend considering a better travel rewards credit card  for more lucrative and flexible travel rewards.

This site might not be as cheap as you would think. That’s because it can charge expensive “agency fees.” For most flights, the fees can be up to $35; however, once you read the fine print, you’ll see they can actually be as high as $200 per ticket!

Cheapoair agency fees

In addition, CheapOair charges a fee to change or cancel any ticket, including within 24 hours, which is free on many other sites.

Pros and Cons of CheapOair

  • Price Match Promise: CheapOair will refund the difference in price if you find a lower price on the same itinerary on a major OTA within 24 hours of booking
  • CheapOair charges hefty booking fees in addition to fees to cancel or change your flight
  • Price Match Promise is very limited; the guarantee is only good for identical flights on Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline, and Travelocity

Bottom Line: CheapOair might not be cheap after all. It advertises low base fares, but it charges booking fees, which usually result in a higher price than the airline’s website. For more information, check out our guide to CheapOair .

Hopper is an app that tries to predict the right time to buy a flight. It claims that using its app can save you up to 40% on flights. The simple interface and color-coded map show you the cheapest and most expensive times to fly to your chosen destination.

Hopper Fare Calendar

You can also set up alerts to watch the prices for your specific dates or watch a whole month if you have flexible travel plans.

Pros and Cons of Hopper

  • Easy to use
  • Choose to watch prices for a specific trip or choose to watch prices over a whole month
  • No ability to search on a desktop
  • Few filtering options

Hot Tip: There are many credit cards with travel insurance and extra protections like trip interruption and cancellation protection and baggage delay coverage . We suggest looking at Chase credit cards or Amex credit cards for great insurance coverage.

We searched for a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to New York City (JFK) across different travel booking websites to compare pricing head-to-head. Below is the cheapest ticket each website offered.

In this search, we weren’t taking anything other than price into consideration. When you are actually booking a flight, there will most likely be more factors that go into your decision of which flight to book.

In this example, Google Flights, Hopper, and Priceline tied for the cheapest flight cost with Expedia, Hotwire, Orbitz, and Travelocity coming in just $3 more expensive. CheapOair was by far the most expensive option.

There is no one-stop shop to find the lowest prices on a flight every time. Most OTAs are in the same ballpark when it comes to price.

If you’ve got some flexibility, many of these sites can help you find the lowest-priced travel dates and destinations.

If you prefer a more traditional booking, start out with a travel search engine like Kayak or Google Flights to search all of the other sites. That will give you a good idea of the best website to use to save the most money on your next flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best website to use to book the cheapest flights.

There is no single website that has the cheapest flights all of the time. Most of the travel search engines and online travel agencies all have similar pricing, however you can find some really nice deals when looking at opaque (hidden) bookings or vacation packages.

What is an opaque booking?

An opaque booking hides many of the flight details, including arrival and departure times and the operating airline, until your booking is complete. Many sites including Hotwire, Orbitz, and Travelocity offer these types of bookings.

Will I earn frequent flyer miles when I book through an online travel agency?

Generally, yes, you will still be able to earn frequent flyer miles on flights booked through an online travel agency. However, miles earned to qualify for elite status may be not be awarded unless you book directly through the airline’s website.

What are the best websites to buy cheap flights to Europe?

Your best bet would be to start with a travel search engine like Kayak or Google Flights. You will be able to see prices from many different websites in one place and you can track flight prices to help determine the best time to purchase tickets. Be sure to check out our guide to the best websites to book European vacation packages if you want to bundle your flight with a hotel and/or rental car.

Is it cheaper to book directly on the airline's website?

Often, an airline will offer the lowest prices through its own website. However, you can often save money booking through an online travel agency (OTA) that has the ability to combine flights from more than 1 airline into a single itinerary.

You Can Still Book Cheap Summer Flights to These Destinations

By Rachel Chang

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

While the excitement of the  summer travel season is upon us, it’s coming with one major caveat:  high price tags on airfare . With  scaled-back flight schedules , strategizing— especially by booking early —is more essential than ever before. But even if you haven’t locked in your flights yet, it’s not too late to find that affordable summer getaway, if you know where to go.

“Entertainment meccas, such as Las Vegas and Orlando, provide consistent value, with especially good deals in the summer,” says Kevin Heery, Priceline ’s chief product officer. “There is widely available inventory at multiple star-levels and price points to cater to different interests and budgets.”

Broadly speaking, domestic airfares are going down, as Kayak ’s consumer travel trends expert Kayla Inserra says they’ve seen the average price over the last two weeks dip 23 percent, while international fares have gone up 11 percent during the same period. Even so, travelers who want to use their passports can still find flight deals.

We looked at data from both Priceline and Kayak, as well as Skyscanner and Booking.com , to hone in on nine of the best destinations still offering affordable summer vacations.

The Nevada city continues to be a top choice for Americans, appearing on all four booking companies’ lists. For Skyscanner, it was the top booked destination for the summer for roundtrip economy airfare for departures between May 1 and September 1, while Booking.com noted that it’s one of its top cities offering  Getaway Deals , as well as one of the most searched and trending locations for domestic travelers.

Despite June being the peak month for  Kayak , which named Vegas one of its most popular summer destinations, roundtrip summer prices from Phoenix start at $80 and from Chicago O’Hare at $166, with average round trips being $315. Priceline also noted an average nightly hotel at $130, making it one of the most affordable places to stay as well.

Madeira, Portugal

At the top of Skyscanner’s best value destinations for the year is Madeira, Portugal , which has seen a 22 percent price drop since the beginning of the pandemic—and also seen a 123 percent increase in searches, landing it on the booking site’s hot list for family travel.

The best days to fly to the islands off the coast of northern Africa are in August, according to the site , with average roundtrip flights from $588. Fares increase to $692 for bookings in July, and $776 for flights in June.

With bold-faced name attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, it’s no surprise this Florida city also showed up on every booking company’s lists for summer deals. Kayak called Orlando the cheapest summer destination for domestic travel, with an average airfare of $335. Meanwhile Skyscanner’s global travel trends expert Laura Lindsay said it was one of the top booked summer cities, with fares as low as $70 roundtrip in June.

This summer also brings the return of Southwest Airlines service from Boston; Cincinnati; and Jackson, Mississippi; as well as JetBlue flights from Worcester, Massachussetts. New service is also being launched from Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Avelo ; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Long Beach, California, on Southwest; and Providence, Rhode Island, on Breeze.

A temple with a water fountain.

Taipei, Taiwan

Perhaps most surprisingly, Taiwan’s capital was also called out by three of the travel booking sites. It was the top trending international destination on Kayak, with a 344 percent increase from last year in booking searches, while Skyscanner called it one of the most underrated alternative destinations.

“This summer, especially now that Asia has dropped most of its covid restrictions, we’re seeing travelers venture further,” Heery said, highlighting Taipei as one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with hotel average rates at $130.  Skyscanner  lists August flights from $875. While served by carriers like United and Cathay Pacific, Taiwan own’s  EVA Air also provides top-notch service , as does the newcomer to the market,  Starlux Airlines, which just launched its first U.S. route to LAX , this spring, with  August rates starting at $901 .

Salt Lake City

“Typically a hot ski destination, Salt Lake City is prime for summer travels, too, with plenty of outdoor activities like boat rides, biking, scenic hikes, or visiting one of the many nearby national parks,” Inserra says. She notes that average airfare on Kayak is about $370, which is a 26 percent decrease compared to last summer.  Skyscanner also said that the cheapest month to fly to the Utah capital is June (specifically June 20 is the cheapest arrival date), showing the lowest roundtrip fares starting at $47 in June, $54 in July, and $52 in August.

The north Texas hub is one that “may not be top of mind, but you should definitely check out,” Heery says, noting it’s on Priceline's Top 10 Most Affordable list for both airfare and hotels.  Dallas , the self-professed “official home of the frozen margarita,” is filled with activities to beat the Texas heat, from water activities on White Rock Lake or Trinity River to Shakespeare Dallas ’ outdoor Shakespeare in the Park shows at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater lawn, this year featuring Much Ado About Nothing , Two Gentlemen from Verona , and King Lear .

Kayak also ranked it as one the cheapest summer domestic destinations with $369 average airfare, with roundtrip flights from Phoenix for $190, Chicago O'Hare from $203, and San Diego for $320.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

“If you’re looking to travel internationally without breaking the bank, Canada is a great option,” Inserra says. While Toronto has roundtrip deals on Kayak averaging $405 roundtrip and Montreal for $492, Calgary, which sits just a bit more at $512, is a less crowded market, but offers  nearly 20,000 acres of parks , as well as hiking on the Bow River Pathway, biking around the  Glenmore Reservoir , or even high-speed fun on  one of the continent’s fastest ziplines . Priceline also called out the Alberta city for its low hotel rates, averaging $148 a night.

Cancun, Mexico

There’s a reason Cancun is such a popular beach getaway. Not only is it in the same central time zone as Chicago in the summer, but flight deals are not hard to hunt down. Kayak says that prices have seen a 20 percent drop since last summer, with average roundtrip airfares at $551. Prices tend to rise as it gets deeper into the summer, with $448 in June, $556 in July, and $575 in August.

It’s also one of Booking.com’s top locations for Getaway Deals, and among Kayak and Skyscanner’s top spots for international travel.

Manila, Philippines

For both Kayak and Skyscanner, Manila was one of the top international destinations. With high season being November through January, the off-peak season makes it one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with average nightly hotel rates at $123. Summer roundtrip flights will still likely be in the four-digit range,  according to Kayak , with a sharp drop of nearly $300 from July to August. That said, the booking site did find a one-way ticket between New York and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International for $458.

20 of the Best Places to Travel on Cheap Flights in 2020

The world is a big place, and with so many amazing options, narrowing down where to go next can be difficult. At Going we’re big believers in going where the flights are cheapest, and letting airfare deals dictate your next trip. While there are some destinations we find deals to on a regular basis, deals to other destinations can be more elusive—and either list can change depending on factors such as routes and competition.

So, we’ve put together a list of some places that we expect to see more flight deals to in 2020. Forecasting fares isn’t an exact science, but our Flight Experts have the scoop on new and existing airline routes and historical pricing trends (including data on the great cheap flights we saw in 2019), and they can use their knowledge to make some predictions.

As with last year’s list , the places on this list aren’t necessarily the absolute cheapest places to go in the world—and we’ll see deals to many other destinations, too. We’re watching these particular places because we predict we’ll see a lot more cheap flight deals to these destinations in the coming year. Below, in no particular order, we present our recommendations for where to go on cheap flights in 2020.

Japan has typically had a reputation as one of the more expensive destinations in Asia (especially compared to destinations like Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia) and pricey flights to reach the country weren’t helping its affordability. But Japan earned a spot on last year’s list based on the increase in flights to gateways other than Tokyo, such as Osaka or Fukuoka in the country’s south. Those new routes helped increase competition, bring prices down, and offer travelers more options for open-jaw flights.

This year, that trend continues and Japan earns a spot on the list thanks to a new agreement that adds 13 new routes between the US and Tokyo’s Haneda airport. The move means even more competition, especially to Haneda, which is the more convenient of Tokyo’s two airports, and we expect this increase in competition will help increase the frequency of amazing deals to Japan.

The new services are expected to begin in summer, just in time for the Tokyo Olympics in July and August (though prices around the Olympics will likely be higher due to increased demand). American Airlines will be adding flights from Dallas/Fort Worth, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles; Delta Air Lines will add flights from Seattle, Detroit, Atlanta, Portland, and Honolulu; Hawaiian Airlines will add a flight from Honolulu, and United Airlines will add flights from Newark, Chicago O’Hare, Washington-Dulles, Los Angeles, Houston, and Guam.

These are some of the cheap flights to Japan we saw in 2019:

  • San Jose to Tokyo for $290 roundtrip
  • Philadelphia to Osaka for $378 roundtrip
  • Las Vegas to Tokyo for $342 roundtrip

Buenos Aires, Argentina

The land of Malbec wine, sultry tango, and famously tender beef has always been a budget-friendly destination, though it hasn’t always been easy to find an affordable flight. That’s been changing, and we expect to see even more great deals to Buenos Aires in 2020.

While United suspended their nonstop flights out of Newark (EWR), American Airlines continues to expand their presence in Argentina with the west coast’s first nonstop route to its capital, Buenos Aires, out of LAX, which started at the end of 2018. Norwegian, which has been expanding in Argentina over the last year, also announced plans to offer flights between several cities in the US and Argentina, which should dramatically increase the competition and lower prices.

Additionally, we frequently see great prices out of Miami (MIA) with American, LATAM, Gol, and Aerolineas Argentinas all competing there, and we expect that trend to continue, so you could look for a deal from Miami and then connect to Miami from your local airport. As an added bonus: the US dollar goes almost six times as far compared to five years ago, so there is plenty of savings to be had once on the ground.

These are some of the cheap flights to Argentina we saw in 2019:

  • JFK to Buenos Aires for $433 roundtrip
  • LAX to Buenos Aires for $442 roundtrip
  • Houston to Buenos Aires for $648 roundtrip

Nairobi, Kenya

From the coastline of the Indian Ocean to the great plains of the Maasai Mara Reserve, the East African nation of Kenya is home to an abundance of riches. And while it’s still pricier to fly to Kenya (and much of Sub-Saharan Africa) than it is to many places in Europe or Central America, prices have been dropping and we expect to see more deals to Kenya, particularly to Nairobi, in 2020.

The increase in deals is mostly thanks to Kenya Airways joining the Air France/KLM partnership back in 2018 . Since then, frequency to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) has increased and there are now daily flights to NBO from the connecting hubs of Paris and Amsterdam, which has helped drive down prices from the US.

The best prices tend to be from the east coast of the US, though we have seen great deals from cities across the country. While prices around the IAAF 2020 World Championships , which will be held in Kenya in July, will likely be higher, in general we expect prices to Kenya to remain competitive now that it’s easier to connect to the country through Europe.

These are some of the cheap flights to Kenya we saw in 2019:

  • NYC, San Francisco, or Chicago to Nairobi for $557 roundtrip
  • Atlanta to Nairobi for $584 roundtrip
  • Milwaukee to Nairobi for $574 roundtrip

Oahu, Hawaii.

At the risk of getting repetitive, we’ll say it again: more competition generally equals better fares, and that maxim was proved in the case of flights to Hawaii when Southwest launched its first flights from California to the islands in 2019.

We found some amazing deals to Hawaii when Southwest began flying from Oakland, San Diego, San Jose, and Sacramento to the islands of Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii. Though we haven’t seen fares as low as the eye-popping promotional fares on launch day—as low as $98 roundtrip—we have seen that the the “Southwest effect” has consistently driven down prices on other airlines, both from the Mainland to Hawaii and within the islands, with inter-island flights dropping as low as $58 roundtrip.

In 2020, Southwest will continue to expand its routes, which means we’ll see more fare competition between Southwest and airlines like Hawaiian, Alaska, and United and more great fares (though be aware Hawaii deals are only sent to Premium members).

These are some of the cheap flights to Hawaii we saw in 2019:

  • San Francisco nonstop to Hawaii island for $298 roundtrip
  • San Diego nonstop to Maui for $282 roundtrip
  • Boise to Oahu for $351 roundtrip

Casablanca, Morocco

Though it’s just a short hop from Spain, the North African nation of Morocco has historically been more expensive to reach from the US than cities like Barcelona and Madrid. That changed last year thanks to increased flights to Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc, which joined the Oneworld alliance in 2018 and now offers flights from NYC, DC, Miami, and Boston.

These additional options helped put flights to Morocco from the US in the same price bracket as flights from the US to most of Western Europe, and with more routes being added in 2020, we expect the trend of great deals to continue.

American Airlines will also begin service to Morocco in June 2020 with a nonstop flight from Philadelphia to Casablanca, an additional option for east coasters that could increase price competition between American and Royal Air Maroc and keep the deals coming.

These are some of the cheap flights to Morocco we saw in 2019:

  • Charlotte to Casablanca for $506 roundtrip
  • Dallas to Marrakesh for $494 roundtrip
  • Indianapolis to Casablanca for $545 roundtrip

We expect to see an increase in deals to the 49th state in 2020, just as we did in 2019, thanks to the ongoing battle for airline dominance out of Seattle between Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines. And while that battle rages on, the clear winners are bargain-loving travelers flying out of Seattle—and other Delta hubs—to the state of Alaska.

For example, in 2019 we saw Alaska undercut Delta with flight prices as low as $212 out of Delta hubs like Minneapolis (MSP) and Detroit (DTW) to Anchorage and Fairbanks. Alaska also continues to put out good fares from its west coast hubs, and though fares from cities that aren’t served by Delta or Alaska are a bit higher, we do see deals every now and again. As with Hawaii, though, we only send Alaska deals to our Premium members.

These are some of the cheap flights to Alaska we saw in 2019:

  • Detroit to Anchorage for $314 roundtrip
  • Albuquerque to Anchorage for $349 roundtrip
  • Seattle to Anchorage for $154 roundtrip

Deals to London come around with almost as much frequency as afternoon tea, and we don’t expect that to stop, even as the UK navigates uncertainty around Brexit. In fact, we expect to see more deals to London from all over the US thanks mainly to two big airline developments.

First, there’s the joint venture between Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines, which launched in 2019 and resulted in a significant increase in frequency to and from London, including a comeback in frequency to London’s second busiest airport, Gatwick (LGW). Additionally, jetBlue will begin selling tickets in 2020 for flights in 2021 which will further increase downward pressure on fares from its competitors.

The large—and growing—number of airlines linking the US with London (including America, Delta, United, British Airways, Virgin, Norwegian, Icelandair, and more) means lots of competition, which should help drive down fare and keep deals frequent throughout 2020.

These are some of the cheap flights to London we saw in 2019:

  • NYC nonstop to London for $328 roundtrip
  • Anchorage to London for $569 roundtrip
  • Detroit to London for $358 roundtrip

sunset on the River Ganges in India.

Delta’s resumption of flights between New York and Mumbai at the end of 2019 (which had ceased in 2015) will be a game changer for American travelers heading to India in 2020. We expect this increase in competition to result in lower fares and more frequent deals, and in fact we’ve already seen a hint of that since flights went on sale earlier this year.

India’s a very cheap destination once you get there, too, with an extensive domestic rail network and increasing competition between private domestic airlines like Vistara and Indigo. In addition, India now has much cheaper regional flights to nearby countries such as Turkey, Myanmar, and Vietnam, so you could snag a great deal to India and then affordably add on visits to more Asian countries on the same trip.

These are some of the cheap flights to India we saw in 2019:

  • New York to Chennai for $614 roundtrip
  • Atlanta to Mumbai for $673 roundtrip
  • Chicago to New Delhi for $662 roundtrip

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Similarly to Kenya, Tanzania is another East African nation set to benefit from the Air France/KLM/Kenya Airways partnership that started in 2018. The partnership makes it easier to connect from the US to Tanzania via Europe by utilizing the Air France and KLM network from the US to Europe and connecting to Kenya Airways’ network to reach destinations across Africa.

We’ve since seen an increase in deals to Dar es Salaam, a port city on Tanzania’s east coast that’s a short domestic flight to Arusha, the gateway to popular destinations including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Kilimanjaro. With competition in the form of Star Alliance airlines (like United, Brussels Airlines, or Ethiopian Airlines, which has the largest number of US destinations and easily connects with DAR) there’s incentive to keep prices low in 2020 as well.

These are some of the cheap flights to Tanzania we saw in 2019:

  • Seattle to Tanzania for $573 roundtrip
  • Chicago to Tanzania for $618 roundtrip
  • NYC to Tanzania for $665 roundtrip

Liechtenstein

Sandwiched between Austria and Switzerland, the 15-mile-long principality of Liechtenstein has a lot more to it than its small size would suggest. In celebration of its 300th anniversary, Liechtenstein has completed a national trail network making it possible to hike from one end of the country to the other. Better still, exploring this tiny country by foot is a great way to cheaply experience a traditionally expensive part of Europe without breaking the bank.

While the country doesn’t have its own airport, Zürich is just a short (about one hour) train ride away and sees regular flight deals from the US, thanks to a plethora of routes and airlines flying from the US. Swiss International Air Lines will add direct flights between DC and Zürich in early 2020, which will also help keep prices low.

These are some of the cheap flights to Zürich we saw in 2019:

  • Baltimore to Zürich for $383 roundtrip
  • Boston to Zürich for $313 roundtrip
  • Columbia to Zürich for $335 roundtrip

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Malaysia is often overlooked on Southeast Asia itineraries; it shares space on the Malay Peninsula with Singapore but is much cheaper than its neighbor. And, thanks to five-star All Nippon Airways, it’s been consistently cheaper to reach from the US.

In 2020, we expect ANA, in conjunction with United, to continue to offer some amazing deals from Chicago, NYC, DC, Houston, LA, Seattle, San Jose, and San Francisco to Malaysia via Tokyo.

Its flights to Kuala Lumpur are some of the most solid fares to Southeast Asia that we see. Best of all, Kuala Lumpur is the hub for budget airline AirAsia, so you can also hop to nearby destinations like Bali, Myanmar, Jakarta, Singapore, and Phuket for less than $100 roundtrip on most dates.

These are some of the cheap flights to Kuala Lumpur we saw in 2019:

  • Newark to Kuala Lumpur for $467 roundtrip
  • San Francisco to Kuala Lumpur for $551 roundtrip
  • Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur for $490 roundtrip

Former Yugoslav Republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Stretching along the Adriatic coast from Slovenia to North Macedonia, the countries that comprise former Yugoslavia make up a cheap, diverse, and generally uncrowded corner of Europe. While they’ve always been easy on the wallet once you’re there, flights to this farther-flung region have historically cost a bit more.

But now, cities like Belgrade, Zagreb, and Ljubljana are starting to see regular deals that connect through major hubs like Brussels, Frankfurt, or Zürich. Additionally, increased intra-Europe flights to these countries on regional carriers like Air Serbia and Belavia, and the budget carrier Wizz Air, have made it easier and cheaper to hop to the region from elsewhere in Europe, so we expect deals to continue to pop up throughout 2020.

These are some of the cheap flights to the former Yugoslav Republic countries we saw in 2019:

  • NYC to Belgrade for $193 roundtrip
  • Minneapolis to Zagreb for $584 roundtrip
  • Cincinnati to Ljubljana for $491 roundtrip

Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary

The Central European countries of Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary have a reputation for being much cheaper to visit than their Western European counterparts, but flight deals to these countries have traditionally been a bit harder to come by than those to hubs like Amsterdam or Paris. Now, a confluence of several events have led to more frequent deals on flights to Central Europe from the US.

Poland’s flagship carrier, LOT Polish Airlines, has been expanding their routes in the US, adding SFO as their 6th airport as they work towards a goal of turning Warsaw into a large hub (with Budapest as a secondary hub). Additionally, American Airlines added three new routes from Chicago to Krakow, Budapest, and Prague, increasing seating capacity in the market by about 15%.

More routes and flights means more seats to fill, which typically means lower prices and more frequent deals for travelers, so we expect to see even more deals popping up to these Central European countries in the coming year.

These are some of the cheap flights to Central Europe we saw in 2019:

  • Denver to Budapest for $492 roundtrip
  • Phoenix to Warsaw for $554 roundtrip
  • Chicago to Prague for $475 roundtrip

Seoul, South Korea

Seoul is often overlooked in favor of nearby Tokyo, but it’s a bargain by comparison with cheaper food and accommodation costs. Unfortunately, it’s never been known as a cheap place to fly to—though a key move from a major US carrier should mean more cheap flights to Seoul in 2020.

Last year, Delta announced plans to move its Asian hub from Tokyo Narita to Seoul Incheon airport in 2020, and that move greatly expand capacity between the South Korean capital and Delta hub cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Seattle. With that increased capacity, we’re expecting to see an increase in deal frequency as Delta competes with airlines such as Korean Air and Asiana.

If cities aren’t your thing, flights to South Korea’s Jeju Island are often available for around $30 roundtrip from Seoul with local budget airlines.

These are some of the cheap flights to South Korea we saw in 2019:

  • Los Angeles to Seoul for $486 roundtrip
  • Chicago, New York, or Seattle to Seoul for $682 roundtrip
  • Houston to Seoul for $652 roundtrip

As a major European hub, Paris has often had great deals in recent years, and a bevy of new direct flights to Paris and other cities should make deals to France even more frequent and widespread in 2020.

There are new routes to Paris departing from Boston on LEVEL and Newark on French Bee and Corsair (both starting in June 2020), and the increase in competition on direct flights to Paris—especially on budget airlines—will help keep prices low.

There are also new direct flights on United from Newark to Nice and on Air Canada from Montreal to Toulouse route (one stop for US folks), which will make it easier—and cheaper—to reach French cities in the south or book an open-jaw to see more of the country without backtracking.

These are some of the cheap flights to France we saw in 2019:

  • New York nonstop to Paris for $285 roundtrip
  • Charlotte to Nice for $493 roundtrip
  • All over the US to Toulouse, Nice, Marseille, Lyon, or Paris in the high $400s

São Paulo, Brazil

While most visitors think of Rio as the first place to visit in Brazil, São Paulo is an equally cosmopolitan city with world-class food, museums, art, and music. It’s the largest city in South America, and it has the busiest airport, Guarulhos–Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU).

With numerous airlines offering routes from the US, including New York, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, and Dallas, there is healthy competition and as a result lower fares—especially in comparison to neighboring Rio de Janeiro.

To check out both places, consider flying into GRU and booking a second ticket to Rio; fares are typically less than $80 roundtrip. Best of all, as of June 2019 Americans no longer require a visa to visit.

These are some of the cheap flights to São Paulo we saw in 2019:

  • Philadelphia to São Paulo for $492 roundtrip
  • Boston to São Paulo for $455 roundtrip
  • Fort Lauderdale to São Paulo for $493 roundtrip

Viti Levu, Fiji.

Fiji is often synonymous with ultra-luxury in the minds of travelers, and the traditionally high price of flights to the 300-island archipelago hasn’t helped that perception. However, in 2019 we found several amazing deals to Fiji, and we expect to continue to see some great fares in 2020.

While historically the best deals have been from the west coast, we’ve seen an increase in deals from all over the US, such as fares to Fiji in the $600s from smaller airports like Eugene, Boise, Kalispell, and Reno. We’ve even found some 2-in-1 deals with Australia, which include stops in both countries on the same itinerary.

These are some of the cheap flights to Fiji we saw in 2019:

  • 2-in-1 from Los Angeles to Fiji and Sydney for $533 roundtrip
  • Las Vegas to Fiji for $498 roundtrip
  • San Francisco nonstop to Fiji for $570 roundtrip

A volcanic archipelago located off the coast of northwest Africa, Cape Verde (also known as Cabo Verde) is known for its beautiful beaches and Creole Portuguese-African culture. In 2019, Cabo Verde Airlines launched nonstop flights to DC. TAP Air Portugal also connects the US with the island nation via Lisbon.

We saw only a few deals to Cape Verde pop up in 2019, but as TAP continues to expand its operations in the US, we expect to see more frequent deals, and from more US cities, in 2020.

These are some of the cheap flights to Cape Verde we saw in 2019:

  • Boston to Cape Verde for $423 roundtrip
  • DC to Cape Verde nonstop for $613 roundtrip

While Thailand is a perennial favorite of backpackers looking for amazing culture, food, and beaches on a budget, getting there hasn’t always been as budget-friendly, but in 2019 we saw more deals to Bangkok and we expect that trend to continue next year as well.

Despite a lack of nonstop flights from the US, we’ve seen a nice uptick in deal frequency with service on 5-star All Nippon Airways via Tokyo and Asiana or Korean Air via Seoul. As an added bonus: while you’ll likely still arrive into Bangkok, other regions are also increasingly accessible by train or a quick budget flight once you’ve reached the Thai capital.

These are some of the cheap flights to Thailand we saw in 2019:

  • Seattle to Chiang Mai for $632 roundtrip
  • San Francisco to Bangkok for $487 roundtrip
  • Houston to Bangkok for $515 roundtrip

The Spanish hubs of Madrid and Barcelona have generally had good fares with solid deal frequency, but in the last year that’s been kicked up another notch, thanks in part to expanded service to Barcelona on Norwegian and on Iberia’s low-cost subsidiary, LEVEL, which offers direct flights to Barcelona from New York, San Francisco, and Boston. With that increase in competition driving down fares, we expect the trend of great deals to Madrid and Barcelona to continue in 2020.

We also expect to see even more deals to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, next year, as several European carriers continue to increase their routes to the islands from cities like Nice, Marseille, Strasbourg, Lisbon, and Naples.

These are some of the cheap flights to Spain we saw in 2019:

  • NYC to Las Palmas for $252 roundtrip
  • Boston to Barcelona nonstop for $225 roundtrip
  • Atlanta to Madrid for $235 roundtrip

How To Use Google Flights To Find Cheap Prices

B efore you can go on your next work trip or dream vacation you must first figure out your travel dates and then find the best flight options out there . If you find the right travel or booking platform you’ll hopefully get the best flight price for your round trip or even split up your flight search into separate departure and arrival flights to help save money. Either way, the next time you fly, you might want to research the most affordable place to buy.

Google Flights: Quick Take

Unlike other travel agency websites, Google Flights acts as a conduit for global distribution, as it allows airlines to directly publish their airfares as well as shows fares from leading travel platforms such as Expedia, Kayak, Hotwire , Priceline or Orbitz. You can see price graphs, track flight prices and search multiple date grids to make sure you are getting the cheapest prices for the specific dates you need.

Google Flights Pros and Cons

Booking flights with google flights: a step-by-step guide.

Though you will be given many filter options to help you find and book the flight that has everything you need at the lowest price it is still good to know the basics. Here are the steps you take when booking with Google Flights:

  • Go to the Google Flights page and select the Flight Search option.
  • Choose your departure city or airport, or select multiple airports close to you so you can compare prices.
  • Select your desired destination, or again, multiple destinations or airports within the same area so you can get the best price.
  • Choose your specific dates of travel or multiple dates that could work for your trip.
  • Select what type of trip you want such as one-way, round trip or multi-city.
  • Add the number of passengers you’d like to book for and if they need any special requirements.

Google Flights Is Where You Find Flights–Not Book Them

It’s important to note all Google Flight bookings are made directly with the specific airline or online travel agency that has posted that airfare on Google. Your booking transaction or ticket sale does not go through Google so they would not be a point of contact for your flight information aside from where you originally found the listing.

The Book on Google option, though it was largely discontinued outside of the United States, may still be an option for you but otherwise, you will book directly through the airline or online travel agency.

Final Take To GO

The bottom line when booking flights no matter if you’re searching for the cheapest option or want to upgrade to business class, is that when you book you know you are getting the best deal for what you need. Next time you go book a flight before you break out your credit card with travel rewards , make sure you are getting the most bang, and bags, for your buck.

  • Choose your departure city or airport, or select multiple airports close to you so you can compare prices.
  • Select what type of trip you want such as a one-way, round trip or multi-city.
  • Add the number of passengers you'd like to book for and if they need any special requirements.
  • Google Flights has its own landing page. As Google does earn money off of travel advertisements, they don't want to overly compete with its business partners so it makes the page less prominent. However, you can simply search Google Flights in Google itself and it will take you straight to the page if you can't otherwise locate it.
  • Google Flights is still a great way to search for and find cheap flights, but Google discontinued Book on Google outside of the United States, which was a platform used to book hotels, in 2022.
  • Google Flights should still be working through Google as a search engine used to find your flights from many different platforms including the airlines themselves. However, this is not to be confused with Book on Google which ended as a hotel booking option through Google for most countries outside of the U.S. in September 2022.
  • Google Flights has a much broader search engine so it can cast a wider net to find almost all flights available for when you are looking to book. They also allow airlines to directly publish their airfares as well as online travel agencies to publish their flights so you can compare all your options and find the cheapest flight that works for you.

After that, children must travel in a booster seat.

Top 5 airlines flying to the United States

Delta is one of the best airlines I have flown

Made the Atlanta to Pittsburgh trip many times, with Delta no issues

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

So so. Terrible aircraft choice for that leg of the flight.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Missed the flight because of them and up geting a rental car

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

Not much seat room, but that was unexpected. But the seat headrest was very uncomfortable.

First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. I was in exit row so I had tons of leg room for a 6' 2" bean pole with long legs. Everything was extra - water, soda, snacks everything besides oxygen. Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries.

Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries. They dont really bother you about carry-on size, I brought a descent sized backpack and they didnt even check.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

Pretty good. Would’ve been excellent if we would have left on time and the crew wasn’t late.

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

Delayed..4 times...completely disorganized boarding. After 5 hours they scrambled to move ppl off plane bc they overbooked. Then they didn't have a cabin crew. WiFi on plane didn't work. Zero amenities. Once we boarded we sat on tarmac for an hour. Explore all alternate options including purchasing a pair of hiking boots and walking to your destination instead of flying spirit.

what I like about Spirit is that the pilot and crew are good communicators. The plane itself - well, its a budget airline and you get what is expected, But I generally just feel safer, somehow, when I know more about what is going on - and Spirit has always done a good job of telling me what is going on: why the delay, why the turbulence, why this and that... and that means a lot to me.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight was OK. Seats were good no cell phone charges on the plane no TVs or entertainment.

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

Flight cancelled and was told by a rude gate agent that they don’t accommodate on other airlines. Had to wait 5 hours for a connecting flight that had a 7 hour layover. Would not allow bags to be checked early so we couldn’t go through security .Had to rent a car for the afternoon to store bags and get a meal. Also incurred a hotel fee. No apology or reason given for the cancellation- just rudeness.

They cancelled the flight then did nothing to help us rebook. It was awful - I won’t fly with them again

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine.

The truck that was refueling the plane drove away with the hose still connected to the plane and ripped part of the plane off with it

Not have to pay for every single item to take a flight. Seating and delays sucked.

Flight was cancelled and I had to spend the night in the airport lugging my suitcase around

If you don’t check in 24 hours in advance, they will charge you $110 to check your bag instead of the $30. I did not get an email with this information and did not check in. In addition, my flight home was cancelled at layover and I had to spend the night in the airport, and then have another layover at another airport before making it home. Will not fly frontier again.
