Rocky Mountaineer Train Journey: Guide to Planning and Travel Tips

Rocky Mountaineer is such a mystery to those who’ve heard of it but not yet been on one of their journeys. I’m excited to share all about my experience on this luxury train ‘First Passage to the West’ journey through Western Canada , and also lay out the details of planning your own adventure. From our start in Vancouver to ending in Calgary for our flight home, I’ve got the full scoop on what to expect and how to make the most of a Rocky Mountaineer train trip.

Have you done this luxe vacation in the Canadian Rockies or just heard about it from others? If you have any questions about the experience, what additional activities to do with your time in Canada or just want to share your own train travel experience, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re happy to share more or help others plan their Rocky Mountaineer trip.

This travel journey was sponsored by Rocky Mountaineer.

A Rocky Mountaineer train trip is a once in a lifetime journey full of beautiful landscapes and top shelf hospitality. See what to expect on the train, how to plan the complete experience and all about the cost of the Rocky Mountaineer.

What is Rocky Mountaineer?

I am really fortunate because I get to travel a lot, and my family usually gets to come along, but we’re more often than not doing a road trip or traveling locally. It’s a lot of staring at the road and managing how much tablet time is acceptable on a car trip, and it’s often not a lot of great meals on the road. The Rocky Mountaineer is 100% different and really is the most unique vacation.

Not that any one type of travel is better than another, as each has its purpose, but a luxury train has been MY bucket list trip. I get to enjoy the journey and not just drive. I get to have nice meals while watching nature pass me by as we head into the Canadian Rockies . It’s a trip where you don’t have to manage the plans, the timing or the kids (unless you bring them along). This is the ultimate recharge.

As you make your way from Vancouver BC to Calgary AB on Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West route, guests get to stay in beautiful hotels each night (not sleeping on the train), so really, this trip is ALL about the journey. It’s awesome.

The Train Travel Plans

There are several routes and options to customize your journey with Rocky Mountaineer. It’s not the type of train system that you would use to commute from city to city, but it’s a luxury train that provides a unique passage for sightseeing and getting to a unique final destination. There are three different routes in Canada and one in the USA .

In Canada, the Rocky Mountaineer route options include First Passage to the West, Journey through the Clouds, and Rainforest to Gold Rush. Each is a bit different in terms of scenery and midway stop, but they all start / end in Vancouver BC (the start/end destinations are up to you!). The First Passage to the West route journeys between Vancouver and Banff National Park with Lake Louise as an optional ending point (just short of the town of Banff). The other two Canadian train routes can either start/end at Jasper National Park in northern Alberta.

The Rocky Mountaineer route in the USA is called Rockies to the Red Rocks . This luxury train trip goes between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah . You’ll cover a lot of ground and amazingly different sights on this route, and your overnight stop is in the beautiful town of Glenwood Springs. This is a great opportunity to enjoy both the Denver area and Utah National Parks !

I think the Rocky Mountaineer experience in the USA is quite different from what you’ll see on the Canadian train routes. I want to do them all!

Tip: as you plan and book your Rocky Mountaineer journey, seriously consider adding time in the start or ending destinations. Maybe for the additional time on the West Coast, you can visit Vancouver Island and Victoria BC . If you want to add another level of adventure to the Red Rocks destination, plan to complete the epic biking trail through Utah .

Onboard Rocky Mountaineer

As soon as I shared that I was heading out on Rocky Mountaineer I started getting questions all about what it’s actually like aboard the train. “What is the food like? Is there wifi onboard? Do the seats lay down flat?” I’ve got all the answers for all these questions and more.

If you have additional questions or want more specific information than provided, please be sure to leave a comment or send us a note. We want to be helpful so you can plan an awesome train adventure, but we also think it’s important to leave a little mystery.

Rocky Mountaineer Service Levels

Because the Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury train experience, there are different levels of service you can book. Not every train ticket is the same, but the courtesy and sights are, so if you are just looking to enjoy a train journey and don’t know really what the differences in the experience are, we’ve got you covered.

GoldLeaf Rocky Mountaineer Service

The GoldLeaf Service is one of the two types of service levels on the Canadian routes for the Rocky Mountaineer. With GoldLeaf Service, you will be in a bi-level glass-dome coach. You have an assigned seat in the upper level of your train car. Your seat has all sorts of controls for reclining, lumbar support and a seat heater. The dining tray is located in your armrest and you have a standard electrical outlet for your seat.

The upper level of the GoldLeaf Rocky Mountaineer car also has enormous windows that curve to the ceiling, making it amazing for seeing the mountains and trees as you travel. The level of tint of the dome observation windows can be controlled by your host to limit harsh sun on really bright days, keeping the car more cool.

The other thing that makes the Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf service an elevated experience to SilverLeaf (which you can read about below) is the way dining is done. For GoldLeaf meal service (breakfast and lunch), dining takes place in the lower level of the coach and is done in two seatings, with half the guests going to the lower level dining area and then swapping with the other half after the meal. Although dining is on the lower level of the train car, don’t worry, you can still enjoy the views through the oversized train windows.

Other perks of the GoldLeaf Service include premium wines and cocktails, snacks such as pastries and cheese service, and additional  Rocky Mountaineer team members for questions and conversation.

SilverLeaf Service Passage

As I mentioned, the courtesy and sights are the same if you book SilverLeaf Service on the Rocky Mountaineer, but there are some key differences. The train cars for SilverLeaf are single level, so there isn’t an upper observation level and separate dining area, but the windows are HUGE and they too curve up to the center of the train. I really like the open feeling so much height gives on the Rocky Mountaineer journey.

The seats on the SilverLeaf coaches are also different. You are a little more limited on the personal seat adjustments you can do:you can shift the seat a bit, but you lack the optional heated seats and lumbar adjustments in GoldLeaf. Also, there is a tray that comes down from the seat in front of you, much like an airline seat, instead of coming up from the armrest.

The most significant difference between Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf Service is the dining set up. As I mentioned with the GoldLeaf, you have a separate dining area and get to go between upstairs and downstairs. With SilverLeaf, all dining and drinks are done at your seat with your Onboard Hosts attending everyone instead of being at a dining table.

Should you Choose Silver or GoldLeaf Service?

Ooh, so here’s where the decision about which type of fare to purchase comes down to the budget you’re working with. Riding the Rocky Mountaineer is a bucket list adventure, for sure, so most guests do choose the GoldLeaf Service to simply have all the stops pulled out and enjoy themselves to the max. The differences really are in the way dining is done and whether or not your train car has two stories or not.

The price difference of GoldLeaf vs SilverLeaf is not as much as you’d think, with the cost difference being $500-$700 more for the GoldLeaf. Why I say that’s not “as much as you’d think” is because booking the Rocky Mountaineer is already a very premium experience and once you’ve already budgeted around $2000 per passage ($1500 USD per person is the lowest cost I’ve found), the bump up in ticket class may not seem like so much.

Note : I am not here to tell people what is costly and what isn’t, as travel budgets and travel value is different for everyone. The Rocky Mountaineer experience is so unique and special in both classes of service, so do what’s right for YOUR budget and travel style.

Dining Onboard Rocky Mountaineer

Ahh, dining aboard the Rocky Mountaineer is the most common question I get. Everyone wants to know how the menus work and what items are available. Don’t worry, I have the answers, but take the specifics to what we ate with a grain of salt, as the menu aboard the Rocky Mountaineer changes with the availability of locally sourced produce and products.

To start the day, morning pastries and coffee service begin soon after leaving the Rocky Mountaineer station. This is followed by breakfast on the lower dining level for GoldLeaf and at your seat for SilverLeaf. There are more options on the menu for GoldLeaf passengers than SilverLeaf. We enjoyed eggs benedict, lemon pancakes, beautiful avocado toast and salmon lox.

For lunch, we ate some pretty delicious meals, including glazed pork tenderloin, locally sourced steelhead, steak and dungeness crab ravioli. And the desserts matched the creativity and deliciousness of the main courses.

Note: if you’re traveling on with a food allergy or sensitivity, tell Rocky Mountaineer at the time of booking. They are well equipped to provide the same high quality meals to guests with limitations as guests that are able to just order from the provided train dining menu.

What Do You Do Aboard the Rocky Mountaineer Train?

Because the Rocky Mountaineer runs on shared tracks, meaning that freight trains also run on the same lines, there are times where the train has to slow or even stop to allow other train traffic to proceed, depending on the priority of the other trains. This means that your time on the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer train each day could range from 8 to 12 hours, depending on the route. On the U.S. route between Denver and Moab, the travel days are shorter, so you may only be en route 5 to 8 hours per travel day. This is a lot of time, and it’s very relaxing, but many people do need additional stimulation.

While you’re traveling, the Rocky Mountaineer hosts share lots of information and history as you go. They help guests spot wildlife along the route and they answer all kinds of questions to help pass the time. We learned about the towns we were passing through, about the history of train routes in Canada (on First Passage to the West) and even about the wildlife we were seeing.I think the most fascinating part was learning about how train operations actually work, particularly when it comes to track switching and shared lines. The incredible scenery was constant, and I was definitely occupied by all the views the entire journey.

Rob Taylor and Kelly Blanchard on Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf Service First Passage to the West 3

So, what can you do if you feel you need to plan more activities during the Rocky Mountaineer travel time? A lot of guests travel with books and small games in the event they want to add that sort of fun. There is NO WIFI on any of the Rocky Mountaineer trains, and cell service is very poor to non-existent along most of the routes. But, part of the beauty of this trip is really getting to unplug and be present with your surroundings, so no WIFI didn’t feel like a huge miss.

I also loved the social atmosphere of the trains, we ended up leaving with so many new friends.

My favorite thing to do on the Rocky Mountaineer is to switch things up and spend time outside. GoldLeaf coaches have an outdoor platform, while SilverLeaf has a smaller outdoor viewing space. This is a great way to take in the views up close and personal, boost your energy if the train is making you sleepy, or if you tend to get motion sickness. I also really loved taking photos from the outdoor platform area.

Note: you cannot move between train cars. Your car is your car. If you’re traveling in a group, as long as you book your passage together, you’ll be with each other for the journey, so you shouldn’t need to move cars.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Rocky Mountaineer

Wow, I received so many questions from people when I first announced that I was embarking on my Rocky Mountaineer First Passage to the West journey, from Vancouver to Banff. I piled them up and have all the answers for YOU!

What is the Rocky Mountaineer train?

The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury short-route train operator that showcases the unique landscapes of the Canadian and American West.

Is the Rocky Mountaineer wheelchair accessible?

Yes! There are lifts for both getting onto each class of train passage and, on GoldLeaf, an elevator to get to the upper observation area.

Can kids ride the Rocky Mountaineer?

Yes! While the Canadian train routes are longer than the US route, children are welcome aboard. Each day is quite long, but if a child is patient and able to manage having long train days, this can be an unforgettable family trip. It may be better suited for older children or kids that are quite easy going. There is no children’s rate or alternative kids menu items.

What is the shortest or longest route on the Rocky Mountaineer?

The shortest Rocky Mountaineer train route is the Rockies to Red Rocks route between Denver, CO and Moab, UT. The longest is the Rainforest to Gold Rush which travels for three days between Vancouver and Jasper, but any route can be turned into a round-trip and the Canadian routes can be made into circle journeys.

Can I choose what hotels I stay in?

Yes, you can. Just like planning any travel, you can always choose budget or nicer properties, and you can book your hotels before or after on your own or through an agent. The hotel in Kamloops (Canadian routes) is assigned post-booking and is included in your general Rocky Mountaineer passage. Examples of hotels you may choose to stay in as a part of your journey may be the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver , Coast Coal Harbour Vancouver , Chateau Lake Louise , Mount Royal Hotel in Banff , Fairmont Palliser in Calgary or on the US route, you can enjoy the Hoodoo Moab Hotel . There are more options too, of course.

If I am on the First Passage to the West, can I end my journey at Lake Louise or must it be Banff?

You can either end the journey at Lake Louise or continue to the town of Banff for the same cost. You can also pair the First Passage to the West with a trip to Jasper and then ride back to Vancouver on a different route.

How do they deal with allergens aboard the Rocky Mountaineer?

If you have an allergy or food sensitivity, you should let your Vacation Consultant know when booking, and you can remind your onboard hosts when you arrive. Menu alternatives are available and they are very good at making accommodations.

Will I see wildlife from the train?

While the very nature of wildlife is to be wild, there are quite a few species you can see from the Rocky Mountaineer. From countless bald eagles to bighorn sheep and then sometimes moose or bear, wildlife may wander around your route and the onboard hosts make every effort to communicate between cars to help guests spot wildlife from the train.

How much is each type of passage on the Rocky Mountaineer?

Prices vary depending on the route and availability, but SilverLeaf Service can start at $1500 USD per passenger and Gold Leaf at $2000+, adding on days and premium extensions continues to build the final price.

Can I do the Rocky Mountaineer as a round trip experience?

Absolutely! You can either book passage back and forth on the same route, or for Canadian train routes you can do a ‘Circle Journey’ taking two different routes and ending in your original destination.

Does the Rocky Mountaineer go to Calgary or Waterton Lakes National Park?

At this time (2023) the Rocky Mountaineer travels between Vancouver to either Banff or Jasper, but not Calgary or Waterton Lakes National Park. These destinations can be added to your trip via motorcoach or renting a car.

What routes does the Rocky Mountaineer train operate on?

The Rocky Mountaineer train runs between Vancouver, British Columbia and Banff, Alberta via Kamloops, BC; it also operates between  Vancouver and Jasper National Park in Alberta via either Kamloops or Quesnel, depending on the specific route chosen. In the USA it operates between Denver, CO and Moab, UT .

What is the best time of year to take the Rocky Mountaineer train?

The Rocky Mountaineer operates April through October, both for its US and Canadian routes. For the Canadian routes, snow can be on the ground into June in some areas, so if you want to really hike and explore the destinations, visiting after the snow melts and before it falls again is ideal. For the Denver to Utah route the very beginning and very end of the season is best for both weather and smaller crowds in your destinations.

How long does the Rocky Mountaineer train journey take?

The base train routes, in both Canada and the USA, take two days on the train. These can be elaborated on by adding days in the start or end destinations, or by doing a round trip or circle tour.

What are the onboard accommodations like on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

When you ride the Rocky Mountaineer, there aren’t “accommodations” per se, but different sorts of train cars you can choose from when you book (GoldLeaf versus SilverLeaf). You DO NOT SPEND THE NIGHT on the train, but hotel accommodations are booked for you.

What kind of food is served on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

I like to think of the menu aboard as Canadian fusion food. The chefs work to prepare meals that showcase local products, from the Rockies to the Pacific Coast.

Are there any special requirements for passengers on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

If you’re traveling from the US to Canada or vice versa, you’ll need a passport for crossing the border to your point of origin. You’ll need to clear customs as a general rule when flying into either Rocky Mountaineer country. There are no COVID requirements for boarding the Rocky Mountaineer at this time (Sept 2023).

What are the luggage restrictions on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

Besides the standard luggage safety restrictions you’ll face in travel, there aren’t major luggage restrictions for the Rocky Mountaineer. When you travel on the train, your luggage is actually transported separately, and it will be waiting for you in your hotel room at each destination, or if you’re ending the ride and going off on your own, at the train station. Otherwise, you are welcome to bring a personal item (such as a backpack) that you can store under your seat.

Are there any discounts or promotions available for the Rocky Mountaineer train?

Rocky Mountaineer may make discounts available via travel agents or booking deals on their website, but there isn’t a general discount program for booking passage on the train. You can sign up for alerts on their site to let you know if Rocky Mountaineer is launching a promotion .

Can I bring my own food and drinks on the Rocky Mountaineer train?

You can bring snacks or a water bottle if you like, but onboard Rocky Mountaineer, your food and drinks are provided. You cannot bring your own alcohol on the train for consumption during the journey (and you won’t need to given it’s included and service is steady!)

Are there any stops or excursions along the Rocky Mountaineer train route?

The excursions and sightseeing opportunities when you’re on a Rocky Mountaineer journey come at the start or end destinations. You’re welcome to explore the town where you have your overnight stay, but there aren’t any other stops along the way for exploring beyond the tracks. The train hosts do a great job at storytelling and giving you a heads-up on upcoming photo opportunities, and can’t-miss sights.

What is the cost of a Rocky Mountaineer train ticket?

Depending on the Rocky Mountaineer route, the number of days, the add-ons and when you book it, a journey on Rocky Mountaineer can range from $1500 USD to $4000 USD. It really depends on how you build your trip.

How do I book a ticket for the Rocky Mountaineer train?

Passage on the Rocky Mountaineer can be booked directly through their website or through a travel agent. I love trusting more complicated or costly trips to professional travel planners, and they do not cost YOU anything extra to use their services.

What is the cancellation policy for the Rocky Mountaineer train?

Be sure to look at the Terms and Conditions when you book your trip, but in general, no changes or cancellations are allowed within 15 days of your departure. This window may be longer for certain bookings, so be sure to confirm the exact cancellation restrictions before booking.

Would you do another Rocky Mountaineer journey?

Yes! In a heartbeat!

I hope this is all helpful for planning a trip with  Rocky Mountaineer. I think it’s an amazing experience and highly recommend it. Yes, it’s a very different sort of travel, but it’s uniquely wonderful in so many ways.

If you have additional questions, please leave a comment or send us a note. We’re happy to help you plan unforgettable travel memories!

Saturday 7th of October 2023

After traveling on the train 8 or 12 hours, when the train arrives at your overnight stop, are there places available to get dinner when the whole train disembarks at once? Seems like some very small towms that may not have a lot of options. We travel September 2024 First passage to the west, same as your route. Thank you.

Wednesday 11th of October 2023

Yes, there are. In Kamloops there are actually quite a few options within walking distance from your overnight, and it's the same with the other routes too.

Tuesday 23rd of May 2023

One of the most impressive things for me was receiving our Kamloops hotel room key while still on the train so we didn’t have a big line up to check in after our long day. A lovely touch which meant so much.

Wednesday 24th of May 2023

Isn't it wonderful?! I wish all travel was as seamless as this.

Monday 22nd of May 2023

Is there a tipping requirement on the Rocky Mountaineer, like a cruise ship? We are booked for a 9 day Gold Rush each September - Vancouver, Whistler, Quenel, Jasper (2 night) by train then switch to motor coach down to Banff for 2 days, then Calgary.

Looking forward to a trip of a lifetime, I’m sure we’ll be hooked and back for other adventures once’s we’ve completed as I’ve read nothing but amazing experiences. Your write up makes me wish we were leaving tomorrow.

No, there is no tipping required, as the service you experience is a part of your booking. I don't know that you'd actually be able to provide a gratuity, but if the onboard hosts can accept, I'm sure they would do so graciously. And your trip sounds AMAZING!

This U.S. Train Was Voted the Best in the World — and It Has Luxury Cars, Delicious Food, and Stunning Mountain Views

Rocky Mountaineer's Rockies to the Red Rocks route takes passengers on an epic train journey from Colorado to Utah.

rocky mountaineer train round trip

Before cars and planes, there were trains — the quickest and most convenient way to get around, shuffling people across state lines, over rivers, and along mountainsides. Even today, train travel is widely used and sought after, both around the world and here in the U.S. According to the 2022 Transportation Statistics Annual Report by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Amtrak serviced 32 million passengers in 2019 — up one million from 2018 and almost 12 million from 2000. Not only are trains a more sustainable way of getting from point A to B, but the slow, scenic travel they're known for has become its own kind of vacation.

Rocky Mountaineer

There are several companies that offer rides through beautiful landscapes, but it was Rocky Mountaineer that Travel + Leisure readers voted their favorite train in this year's World's Best Awards — the first-ever winner of this brand-new category. And, as someone who's embarked on a Rocky Mountaineer journey, I understand why.

Rocky Mountaineer has been taking passengers through incredible landscapes since 1990, when it launched its inaugural trip through western Canada and the Canadian Rockies. Its unique, dome-shaped windows (only available on the Canadian routes) and luxury tiers of service were a hit with guests, and the company’s success has led to the opening of three additional routes — Whistler Sea to Sky Climb and Rainforest to Gold Rush (both in Canada), plus its latest line, Rockies to the Red Rocks in the U.S.

The company launched a preview season for this U.S. route in August 2021, and I was invited on board in October. Admittedly, I've never considered myself a nature person — I'm much more enticed by beach and city destinations. However, this trip changed the kind of traveler I am.

As soon as I stepped into the train car, I realized this wouldn't be an ordinary ride. From plush leather seats that reclined without compromising the leg room of passengers behind to windows that climbed to the edge of the roof, every detail felt truly luxe.

Those who opt for GoldLeaf service can enjoy a bi-level car with a dining room on the first floor and full glass-dome windows on the second floor. SilverLeaf cars, meanwhile, are all on a single level, with meals and snacks sent directly to your seat.

The ride from Denver, Colorado, to Moab, Utah, is one I'll never forget. From Denver to Glenwood Springs, we followed the glittering Colorado River while twisting around the Rocky Mountains and dipping through valleys. All the while, our host pointed out places where former presidents liked to hang out. And with no Wi-Fi and little cell phone service, it was easy to get engrossed in it all — the history and, of course, the surreal views.

After a restful night in Glenwood Springs (Rocky Mountaineer only provides daylight rides so guests can truly soak up all the sights), we continued on to Moab, where the foliage-laced mountains turned into jagged cliffs of red, beige, and terra-cotta. This part of the trip was faster (five hours versus eight) and had significantly less to marvel at — there was an hour or so stretch with only wide-open plains — though there were still entertaining stories to be told about the canyons we passed through. It was during this time that I started to really appreciate the little things the Rocky Mountaineer team offers.

At meal times, hosts came to "set the table," laying out a white cloth over our tray tables and providing us with cutlery and seasonings. The meals also reflected the locations: One included a charcuterie board with Colorado-raised bison, elk, and venison — animals we had been trying to spot as the train chugged through the Colorado mountains.

“From the moment guests start their train journey, our team takes care of everything, so [they] can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience,” Nicole Ford, vice president of communications, sustainability, and stakeholder relations at Rocky Mountaineer, told T+L. “We take pride in offering an exceptional experience for all guests who travel with us.”

Looking back, this Rocky Mountaineer trip was one of the most unique I’ve ever experienced. As someone who has a tough time unplugging, it was a moment to do just that and connect with the nature and history surrounding me in a luxurious, relaxing way.

How to Choose a Rocky Mountaineer Train Route

Rocky mountaineer trip planning

Which Rocky Mountaineer Route to Choose?

So you’re ready to book a trip on the Rocky Mountaineer train and you’re dreaming of that amazing scenery, all-inclusive food and drink, wonderful narrating hosts, and spectacular domed views…. But how do you actually pick which itinerary or route? Choosing a Rocky Mountaineer route is one of the first steps to creating your perfect luxury train vacation!

Here are some hints to help you – and I encourage you to work with a Rocky Mountaineer Specialist like myself who can really make sure you’re getting the most from your investment into this amazing train ride!

Three Rocky Mountaineer Train Routes

There are three main train routes that take you across the gorgeous Canadian Rockies.  They can often be combined in different ways, so it’s important to start to think about your wish-list for this vacation.  For instance, if you definitely want to spend time in the Jasper area,  you need to choose a route that starts or end in Jasper,  as not all of them do.

All Rocky Mountaineer itineraries can be reversed – you can choose to do train first or train last.   If you fly into Calgary, you will do the “non train” portion first.  If you fly into Vancouver, you will do the train first.

First Passage to the West (Vancouver to Banff  or  Lake Louise)

The two-day First Passage to the West route rolls along the historic tracks of the country’s first coast-to-coast railway between Vancouver and Banff or Lake Louise, with an overnight stay in Kamloops.

Pass by the snarling rapids of Hell’s Gate—named for explorer Simon Fraser’s assertion that “surely these are the gates of Hell”—and the twin rail bridges of Cisco Crossing. Between Kamloops and Banff, you’ll witness the site of the “last spike” driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885 at Craigellachie, and experience the engineering marvel of the Spiral Tunnels. As you travel through Banff National Park be awed by views of towering Castle Mountain and Mount Rundle.

Choose this route if: You want to spend a lot more time in the Banff/Lake Louise area (they’re very close to each other) and you won’t be going up to Jasper at all.   Hint:  If you get a late afternoon flight out of Calgary for your departure,  you can spend your last day in Banff and still make it to the airport on time, rather than transferring back to a Calgary hotel the night before.

Journey Through the Clouds (Vancouver to Jasper)

Also two days long, Journey through the Clouds travels between Vancouver and Jasper, traversing some of the most remote landscapes in Canada, with scenery and wildlife largely untouched by humans. Like First Passage to the West, the rail route passes the rushing Hell’s Gate and Cisco Crossing, travelling along both the Fraser and Thompson rivers. Between Kamloops and Jasper, the train passes the glacier-fed, three tiered Pyramid Falls; Mount Albreda; and Mount Robson—the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at 3,954 metres (12,972 feet). Mount Robson is so big that it often forms its own weather patterns, with clouds enveloping the peak while the rest of the sky is blue. Jasper National Park is a Dark Sky Preserve known for stargazing, wildlife around every corner and some of the best outdoor adventure in the Canadian Rockies.

Choose this route if: It’s a high priority to spend time in Jasper and to visit Jasper National Park, and if you’d like to stop at the Athabasca Glacier on the Columbia Icefields during the drive from Jasper to your next stop.

Insider trip:  I recommend at least 2 nights in Jasper on this route so that you get at least one full day to explore.  Travelers who are able to stretch to 3 nights in Jasper have thanked me profusely as well!

Check out this video of the route.

Rainforest to Gold Rush (Vancouver to Jasper via Whistler)

For those that want to delve further into Western Canada’s history and diverse landscapes—as well as spending more time on the train—the three-day Rainforest to Gold Rush route takes a northerly path between Vancouver and Jasper, uncovering the stories of those seeking their fortune. This rail route also boasts the most trestle bridges, making it a favorite with train fans. With overnights in Whistler and Quesnel, on this journey you’ll climb through rainforest into the alpine alongside the southern fjord of Howe Sound, pass the deep turquoise waters of Seton and Anderson lakes, travel along the desert like Cariboo Plateau, cross the historic Cottonwood River Bridge, and take in Mount Robson. With two of Western Canada’s best outdoor adventure hubs on this train journey, Whistler and Jasper, this rail route is the perfect fit if you love exploring nature.

Choose this route if: Spending a free afternoon in Whistler excites you, and you’re thrilled to spend 2.5 days on the train (remember, you don’t spend the night on the train!).

Circle Routes

These basically combine two rail routes to return to your original point of origin.  This is ideal for returning clients who really want at least 4 days on the train itself.  You may take the Rainforest to Gold Rush route first, for instance,  then have some free time in Jasper and Lake Louise,  then take the Journey Through the Clouds itinerary back  to Vancouver from Lake Louise.

9 Reasons A Rocky Mountaineer Train Trip Is Worth The Money

rocky mountaineer train round trip

Pamela Dittmer McKuen

  • Luxury Travel
  • Types of Travel

A Rocky Mountaineer rail excursion is high on many travelers’ wish lists, and we were no exception. The dreamy television commercials and brilliant catalog photography depicting resplendent Western Canada landscapes had long beckoned us. It’s not an inexpensive vacation, but after much consideration, we booked it.

Rocky Mountaineer is a Vancouver-based luxury rail-tour company operating three routes through the Canadian Rockies. Two- and three-day routes can be combined for a round trip to or from Vancouver . Land extensions also can be added.

Two service levels are offered, SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf . Both are impeccable, but GoldLeaf Service, which we selected, comes with significant extras and a higher price tag. I’ll explain the differences as you read further.

Our route, First Passage to the West , is the most popular. It’s a two-day journey that started in Vancouver and ended in Banff. (You can travel in the reverse direction as well.) We traversed nearly 600 miles and scaled more than 4,000 feet in altitude. Along the way, the landscape spectrum ranged from crystal waters to rugged wilderness, and from old-growth forest to snow-crested mountains. We spotted herds of bighorn sheep and a couple of camera-shy bears.

Was our Rocky Mountaineer train trip worth the cost? Absolutely! Here’s why:

The bagpipe player at the Rocky Mountain Station.

1. A Spirited Send-Off

Early on the morning of the first day, we entered the grand hall at the Rocky Mountaineer Station in Vancouver . It’s a massive, high-ceilinged space with a glass curtain wall separating us from the gleaming navy-and-gold train we would soon board. A musician seated at a lacquered grand piano filled the air with strains of “Waltzing Matilda,” and uniformed butlers passed out orange juice, tea, and coffee.

Our attention was called to a skirted podium flanked by flags of Canada , British Columbia , and Rocky Mountaineer. After a brief welcome speech by corporate VIPs, we were invited to follow a red carpet to our respective coaches. A bagpiper in full regalia accompanied us with marching tunes. As the train pulled out of the station, a retinue of ground-staffers lined up alongside the tracks and waved us off.

2. Superb Seating

Our assigned leather-bound seats were ultra-comfy for lounging. My husband is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and he had ample room for his sprawling legs and stiletto elbows without jostling me. All seats recline, and they can rotate 180 degrees, so parties of four can sit face-to-face. GoldLeaf seats also have seat warmers.

Wi-Fi isn’t available, but electrical outlets and charging ports keep your electronics at peak performance.

A GoldLeaf feature we loved is coaches are double-decker with seats on the upper level. That meant we sat higher above ground. It was like riding in an SUV rather than in a Corvette. The dining room and two modern, accessible restrooms are on the lower level. If you’re unsure about navigating the enclosed spiral staircase between floors, take the automated lift. SilverLeaf coaches and restrooms are on one level.

The domed windows on the Rocky Mountaineer Train.

3. Windows To The World

Custom-designed coaches feature oversized dome windows to maximize your viewing. The windows are kept spotless, so go ahead and take photographs from your seat. You’ll avoid glare by turning off the flash and pressing your camera lens against the glass.

In SilverLeaf coaches, the upper windows curve gently overhead. GoldLeaf’s more expansive windows wrap most of the roof. On hot, sweltering days, hosts can flick a switch to tint them automatically.

Scenic views from the Rocky Mountaineer Train.

4. A Top-Flight Team

All Rocky Mountaineer coaches are staffed by two to four energetic hosts who keep the drinks and snacks flowing. Their entertaining patter recounts tales of early pioneers, the logging industry past and present, wildlife habitats, and engineering marvels like the bridges and tunnels that made British Columbia accessible to the rest of Canada.

Hosts alert you to upcoming major sights, so you have time to get your camera ready. Trains travel at a leisurely 35 miles an hour, but they slow down before scenic photo ops.

5. Route Reading

At our seats, we found two souvenir publications that supplemented our hosts’ commentary. We followed our route in Milepost , a handsome tabloid newspaper that explains prominent features at various trackside mile markers. It also contains maps, photographs, and articles about Western Canada’s history, lore, flora, and fauna. RM is a 4-color magazine chock-full of in-depth articles and gorgeous photography of regional culture and attractions.

6. Delectable Dining And Drinking

The dining experience on a Rocky Mountaineer train is reminiscent of a fine restaurant, with starched white tablecloths and attention to the smallest details. Daily fare includes a gourmet breakfast and lunch plus snacks and an all-day full bar. Menus are prepared under the direction of internationally renowned executive chefs Frederic Couton and Jean Pierre Guerin.

Mealtime is another amenity where GoldLeaf Service shines. For starters, the menus are more extensive. Also, SilverLeaf guests dine at their seats.

GoldLeaf guests retreat to the graciously appointed dining room with large picture windows. Meals are served in two shifts according to seat numbers. If you are in the first seating one day, you’ll be in the second seating on the other. While you wait for your second-shift breakfast, hosts bring you a warm cinnamon scone with butter and jam at your seat to tide you over.

One of our breakfast menus listed freshly baked pastry, a fruit creation, and a choice of 7 main dishes such as eggs Benedict and an egg souffle with spinach and feta. A 3-course lunch consisted of soup du jour or seasonal salad; 5 entrees including roasted Fraser Valley chicken and oven-baked Pacific salmon with loads of trimmings; and a chocolaty dessert. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

On the all-day beverage list are British Columbia wine and beers, name-brand spirits, and non-alcoholic choices. I confess I grew quite fond of Sumac Ridge unoaked chardonnay from the Okanagan Valley!

Scenic views from the outdoor observatory on the train.

7. Outdoor Observatories

At times we wanted to step outside to breathe authentic Rockies air and grab some unimpeded nature photographs. GoldLeaf coaches are designed with an exclusive, full-width viewing platform open on both sides. A nifty shot to take is when the tracks round a curve: Lean over the railing a few inches and capture the train heading into the landscape. In SilverLeaf, the outdoor space is a small platform between coaches.

The lobby of the Delta Hotel by Marriott.

8. Sweet Slumber

Rocky Mountaineer travels in daylight only, so you’ll sleep in a real bed in a real hotel rather than a cramped train roomette. After 8 to 10 hours of mostly sitting, we were ready to stretch. Hotel assignments, which are included in the overall price, are made according to SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf service. Rocky Mountaineer promises moderate standard accommodations with essential services, but ours exceeded that.

We stayed at the recently renovated Delta Hotel by Marriott in downtown Kamloops . Our spacious guest room with two queen beds was decked out with plush white bedding, lighted vanity mirrors, an assortment of Soapbox toiletries, large-screen television, and Wi-Fi. The hotel also has a fitness center, rooftop swimming pool, restaurant, bar, and room service. We would have been content to hang out there for the evening but decided to explore the neighborhood.

Dinner was at our expense, and restaurant choices were plentiful. We ate at Frick and Frack Tap House , where the menu features creative pub cuisine. Afterward, we strolled to Riverside Park on the Thompson River to see the all-volunteer Kamloops Mounted Patrol. There was more to do, but we had an early wake-up call to re-board the train.

Boarding the Rocky Mountaineer Train.

9. Complimentary Connections

Upon arriving in Kamloops, we were met by a motorcoach that drove us to the hotel. Our luggage, which had been transported by truck ahead of the train, was waiting in the lobby. The next morning, our luggage was picked up by porters, and the motorcoach returned us to the train. Red carpets, flags, and smiling hosts once again welcomed us as we boarded. All transfers are complimentary.

Be sure to pack a day bag with glasses, camera, medication, valuables, and anything else you’ll need on the train because you won’t have access to your luggage.

Pricing Notes

The per-person cost of a Rocky Mountaineer trip depends on the route and time of year you travel. The train season runs from mid-April through mid-October. Prices are highest between May and September. (Check the website for promotions .) For our two-day First Passage to the West excursion in September, the price difference between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf service was about $600 each.

Our memories of this extraordinary trip are priceless!

Book early for GoldLeaf Service because seats are limited and fill quickly. If you have special needs, Rocky Mountaineer will make every effort to accommodate its guests’ mobility and dietary needs. If you require assistance, let your reservations agent know at the time of booking.

Seeing Canada by train — or car — is an incredible experience. Here are some of our favorite road trips in Canada.

Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf versus SilverLeaf: A Firsthand Account

Sunlight flooded through the train's glass-dome windows. Sipping a glass of wine, I stared at the blue lake outside as we moved slowly along the tree-lined tracks. I was on Rocky Mountaineer, making my way from Banff to Vancouver.

The all-daylight luxury train travelled 957 kilometres (594 miles) over two days, taking us from the Canadian Rockies to the West Coast. This beautiful journey is called First Passage to the West and is one of the train’s three historic rail routes.

Riding the train during the spring was a delight. Snow-capped mountains, rushing rivers, deep green forests. Bumbling bears, circling bald eagles, grazing bighorn sheep.

There was no shortage of things to see. And it’s not just the scenery that made this journey special. It was also the delicious cuisine, friendly hosts, and attentive service that Rocky Mountaineer is known for.

Person looking at camera, standing in the outdoor area on Rocky Mountaineer train

When riding the Rocky Mountaineer, guests choose either SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf and remain in the same train coach with the same seat for their entire journey. As an industry insider, I had the opportunity to try both Rocky Mountaineer service levels on my trip. I’m now sharing my experience to help you choose which service is best for you.

Day 1 – Banff to Kamloops, SilverLeaf

After spending four days exploring Banff and Jasper National Parks, it was time to leave the Canadian Rockies — and what better way to do that than by taking the Rocky Mountaineer? A slow, scenic train journey was the ideal end to a spectacular across-Canada trip.

We arrived at the Banff train station early on a brisk Sunday morning. (Rocky Mountaineer runs departures for this route from mid-April to mid-October on Sundays, Wednesdays, and some Thursdays.)

At 7.30 am, the train hosts rolled out the Rocky Mountaineer red carpet, a sign that we would be boarding shortly. For Rocky Mountaineer train trips, you only need to carry a small day bag onto the train. Large luggage items are transferred to your overnight stop and placed in your hotel ready for you (for this route, the overnight stop is Kamloops). This luggage transfer service is included in all Rocky Mountaineer rail routes, regardless of service level.

Close up of Rocky Mountaineer train sitting on the tracks at Banff station

The train is scheduled to leave around 8am, so there is plenty of time to find our seats and get settled. My assigned seat for this part of the journey was in SilverLeaf service. In SilverLeaf, you have a seat in a single-level dome coach with large windows. Two hosts welcomed us, getting everyone excited with their enthusiasm.

Leaving Banff, I am instantly mesmerized by the mountain views. It was the first week of May and snow still clung to the craggy peaks.

Seats next to large windows in SilverLeaf on Rocky Mountaineer

"Grizzly on the right!" Just 45 minutes into our journey, the hosts surprised us with this announcement. I peered out the window and spotted a large grizzly bear scratching his head by the side of the tracks. While bear sightings aren’t guaranteed, chances are high in the spring when the bears have just emerged from hibernation. I’ve lived in Canada for 7 years, and this was my first time seeing a grizzly in the wild. An unforgettable moment.

The train makes a brief stop at Lake Louise station to pick up the last travellers (you can take this route from Banff or Lake Louise. Lake Louise pick-up is generally one hour after the train departs Banff). There’s no view of the lake as you pass the station, though you can catch a glimpse of the Victoria Glacier.

Breakfast was served around 9am. Croissants, fruit, orange juice, and coffee to start. In SilverLeaf, you order meals from your seat, and they are served to you there, too. There is a menu card tucked into the seat pocket and a fold-down tray table. The menu listed three main breakfast options, like field berry parfait and smoked salmon scramble, and two lunch options, as well as soft and alcoholic drinks.

In between meals, the hosts wheel a bar cart up and down the train, offering drinks and snacks every few hours. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks are included with your train ticket. Everything is freshly prepared onboard and most dietary requirements can be accommodated. You won’t stay hungry for long!

Rocky Mountaineer food in SilverLeaf, including croissant and fruit plate and a chickpea salad

Throughout the day, our hosts told us stories about the history of the railway and facts about the areas we passed through. I enjoyed hearing about Lady Agnes, who rode through the Rocky Mountains on the outside of a steam train in 1887, and Doris, a lady who lived in a yellow house near Shuswap Lake, who would wave at the train as it rolled by every day. Our hosts were engaging and knowledgeable, answering questions and cracking jokes, and making sure that everyone was having a fantastic time.

As the train trundles along, we cross the Continental Divide, leaving Alberta and entering British Columbia. Here, the train was at its highest point. We were told to adjust our watches and phones one hour back, switching from Mountain time to Pacific time.

Soon after, the train goes through the famous Spiral Tunnels, a highlight of the day. Rocky Mountaineer is the only passenger train to enter the tunnels and complete this gradual descent. Once the train emerges from the other side of the tunnels, it heads through the Kicking Horse Canyon, crossing the impressive Kicking Horse River multiple times. Near Revelstoke, we passed Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven in 1885.

The rest of the day was full of eye-catching sights, from steel bridges to glistening lakes. The hosts continued their lively commentary, and the train slowed down for wildlife sightings, so we were always entertained. I kept heading to the small outdoor viewing platform (which fits about four people at one time) to capture glare-free shots of the attractive scenery.

Lunch was a three-course affair. Rocky Mountaineer uses locally sourced ingredients and crafts their gourmet cuisine to reflect the Western Canada landscape. Depending on the route, the menu could include items like Okanagan harvest jam, BC wild salmon, Alberta beef, Shuswap farmer’s sausage, and seasonal vegetables. I definitely recommend trying the local beer and wine too.

To complement the hosts' commentary, there is the Mile Post newspaper and the Rocky Mountaineer magazine. The Mile Post describes all the train's rail routes with detailed maps and lists key sights at each mile post. It’s a helpful way to keep track of where you are along the way. There's also information about Canadian flora and fauna, and snippets of railway history. The RM Magazine has feature articles on art, culture, wildlife, as well as city guides.

Before arriving in Kamloops, we learnt about the Great Train Robbery of 1906 — where the gang only managed to steal $15 and some liver pills — and saw striking changes in the scenery. We travelled through the semi-arid landscape of Interior British Columbia. Instead of towering mountains and sparkling glaciers, there were volcanic hills, ranchlands, and hoodoos (unique rock formations).

Once the train pulls into Kamloops station, we board a motorcoach which takes us to our hotel. Arrival time in Kamloops varies but is usually between 6.30-8pm. Having been on the train for about 11 hours, I was 100 percent ready to sleep.

Pros of SilverLeaf

  • Social, relaxed atmosphere — the train was filled with constant laughter and excited chatter
  • Rocky Mountaineer hosts constantly walking up and down the single-level coach, offering drinks and talking with guests
  • Meals served at your seat so you never miss a moment of the commentary or scenery
  • Great for wildlife viewing as you can spot animals at eye level
  • Less expensive than GoldLeaf service

Day 2 – Kamloops to Vancouver, GoldLeaf

After dreaming of runaway trains and soaring mountains, I was ready for day two of my Rocky Mountaineer experience. We were transferred by motorcoach back to the station in time for the train’s 8am departure.

In GoldLeaf, seating is on the upper level of a bi-level glass-dome coach. The seats have controls on them so you can adjust the temperature of your seat and recline. It’s spacious and comfortable with lots of legroom. I changed my seat temperature several times during the day, so there was no need to add or remove layers or bring a blanket.

A noticeable difference between GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf is the view from your seat. You have a higher vantage point in GoldLeaf as you are sitting upstairs. Being in and above the tree line, I could look down at wildlife rather than see it at eye level. The windows wrap around to the ceiling, giving panoramic views.

Interior view of GoldLeaf coach on Rocky Mountaineer train

When the train leaves Kamloops, we are told that breakfast is split into two seatings. This is because, instead of eating in your seat, you enjoy meals in the dining room on the lower level of the GoldLeaf coach. The groups switch each day, so if you’re in the second seating on the first day, you’re in the first on the next day. While the first group is at breakfast, the second group gets served pastries at their seats so they aren’t waiting a long time to eat.  I was in the first seating , so I made my way downstairs. In the dining room, each table is made up with white linen and elegant place settings. Tables seat four people, so if you are a solo traveller or a couple, you’ll be paired with other passengers. It’s a great opportunity to make friends and share stories of your Canadian adventures.

There are more choices on the GoldLeaf food menu than on the SilverLeaf. I asked to modify one of the dishes and the staff accommodated my no-egg no-salmon breakfast request. The fresh mini pastries that were given to us to start were warm and buttery. As each table is next to a window, this really is a dining room with a view.

Cloudy sky over landscape near Thompson River in British Columbia

It is another day of captivating scenery and a wildlife extravaganza. The train followed the Thompson River through Black Canyon and Black Canyon Tunnel (named because of the black lava cliffside). Then, there are more sights with excellent names, such as the Jaws of Death Gorge, Avalanche Alley, and Rainbow Canyon. The Cisco bridges, where the CN and CP tracks swap sides of the river, are a highlight for many today.

In GoldLeaf, there is a large outdoor viewing area which can accommodate more people than the SilverLeaf version. I relished the opportunity to go outside. Feeling the wind on my cheeks, I enjoyed taking videos of the train winding around sharp bends while eagerly discussing upcoming sights with fellow passengers. A lightweight jumper or jacket comes in handy when standing on the outdoor viewing platform as it is very breezy!

When I returned to the dining room for lunch, I was eager to see what the chefs would create for us, and I was not disappointed. A charcuterie board with vegan sausage instead of meat, seared king oyster mushrooms with wild rice, and a lemon lavender posset. Others in my group tried the crab ravioli and the Fraser Valley berries and cream. All were simply delicious, especially paired with a glass of white wine — and the dramatic views of Hell’s Gate and the Fraser Canyon.

Close up of food and drinks in GoldLeaf dining room on Rocky Mountaineer

Slowly, the train moves through the forest, then past the farms and towns of the Fraser Valley. Crossing New Westminster Bridge, we began the final stretch of our journey to Vancouver. Then, before we knew it, two days of amazing scenery were over as the train pulled into the station. The staff said their goodbyes and waved us on our way.

Of course, I noted down all the wildlife we saw over the two days. My final tally count was impressive and more than I expected! One grizzly bear, one elk, one heron, 11 eagles (and three nests), five deer, one bighorn sheep, two marmots, one osprey, three black bears, seven vultures, one coyote, and one seal. There were no sightings of wolves, moose, or the mythical Sasquatch, but I was thrilled with the number of animals we saw. There were sections of this journey that felt like a very exciting wildlife viewing tour.

Pros of GoldLeaf

  • Lower-level dining room with tables next to large picture windows
  • More choices on the food and drink menus
  • Chance to chat with fellow passengers while you eat as seating is tables of four
  • Panoramic views of the scenery from your seat on the upper level
  • Large outdoor viewing platform downstairs, so you can enjoy two different perspectives of the landscape
  • Opportunities to capture unobstructed shots of the top sights

Final thoughts and service level recommendations

As I reflect on my experience, I realize that what was so wonderful about travelling by train, rather than driving or flying, was that I could appreciate the scenery without any major distractions (aside from the fantastic food, that is). It was a relaxing slow travel experience that I’d recommend for anyone visiting Canada for the first time.

While travelling in SilverLeaf is ideal for laidback travellers, GoldLeaf is a brilliant choice for anyone celebrating a special occasion or those looking for the ultimate luxury experience. But no matter what service level you choose, one thing is certain — riding Rocky Mountaineer through Western Canada is an extraordinary train trip.
