Interstate 95 closure: What to know about traffic, detours

N ORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) — Officials expect Interstate 95 to be closed in Norwalk for days while crews demolish an overpass, triggering what is expected to be a traffic nightmare for commuters.

The interstate was shut down on Thursday morning after a crash that involved tractor-trailers and another vehicle — causing flames to erupt and damage the overpass in the area of Exit 15 and 16.

The bridge over the interstate will have to be torn down, and the area will not be able to reopen until demolition is complete. Gov. Ned Lamont Lamont has filed an emergency declaration with the federal government in order to receive funds to pay for replacing the bridge.

Officials have urged patience and suggested for anyone who can work from home to do so, and  for people to avoid all non-essential travel in the Norwalk and Bridgeport area.

The closure is being monitored on the national level, with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg asking locals to pay close attention to detours.

What routes should you take? News 8’s live traffic map will help you decide based on current road conditions.

School buses

Norwalk public schools will be closed on Friday due to traffic concerns.

The initial crash and fire delayed school buses in Norwalk.

If needed, parents can track their student’s bus through the Durham Tracking App or contacting the bus company directly at (203) 428-4192.

Rail travel

Rail traffic has not been interrupted, according to the Metro-North Railroad. The railroad is prepared to make adjustments as needed, but does not expect interruptions on Thursday or Friday.

This is a developing situation and more updates will be added as they are made available.

Both sides of I-95 in Norwalk, Conn. now fully open

Published may 5, 2024 • updated on may 6, 2024 at 6:06 am.

Both sides of Interstate 95 in Norwalk have fully reopened on Sunday, days after a fiery crash closed the area.

Crews have been working to demolish the Fairfield Avenue Bridge after it was damaged during a crash and fire on Thursday morning.

"Having the highway completely closed in both directions allows additional equipment to be on site," said Josh Morgan, spokesperson for Connecticut Department of Transportation. "You know, multiple excavators that had the grapplers, the shears, really heavy-duty equipment."

The work included removing concrete, steel and debris from the road, sweeping the road, milling, paving and restriping the pavement markings.

“It is truly amazing that in less than 80 hours from that fiery crash Thursday that shut down traffic in both directions, the highway again is fully open,” Governor Lamont said in part in a statement.

Some people from the area came out to watch demolition this weekend. We spoke to them about their experience the last couple of days.

"Norwalk was a mess. A lot of big trucks on side streets you've never seen before," said Matt Potts, of Norwalk. "I work in Stamford, and it took me two hours to get from Exit 6 to Exit 13," said Juan Trujillo, of Norwalk.

State police said a Chevrolet Camaro was entering I-95 south from Route 7 when it hit the front of a fuel truck that was in the right lane.  That collision caused the fuel truck to veer into the center lane and hit a tractor-trailer truck in the lane.

After the collision, state police said the fuel truck burst into flames under the Fairfield Avenue overpass and the other two vehicles caught on fire. The heat from the fire damaged the overpass and the bridge.

No injuries were reported.

The northbound side of the highway reopened on Saturday evening. The state initially estimated it would be Monday morning before the entire highway would reopen. Lamont has since said that the entire highway will reopen on Sunday morning.

Engineers have also been working to develop preliminary replacement plans for the Fairfield Avenue Bridge. The designs are expected to be completed within the next two weeks with the replacement expected to take about a year.

"Unfortunately, there is such a backlog on steel and materials. We're going to be, you know, up to a year before that bridge can get replaced," said Morgan.

Governor Ned Lamont is expected to give an update on Monday about the next steps for the bridge.

Update: I-95 in Connecticut reopens after flaming crash left it closed for days

By SUSAN HAIGH and PAT EATON-ROBB, The Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed in Connecticut for days after a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

The tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on I-95 in southwest Connecticut, closing the East Coast’s main north-south highway and causing major traffic jams. While Lamont said there were no serious injuries in the 5:30 a.m. accident in Norwalk , the crash caused damage to the bridge above it.

“The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down, and that demolition is going to start first thing tomorrow morning,” Lamont said at a briefing Thursday evening in Hartford.

He said the hope is to reopen the interstate by Monday morning.

The incident was reminiscent of last year’s deadly crash in Philadelphia along I-95 when a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline lost control and caught fire, destroying a section of the highway. It was closed for about two weeks .

In Connecticut Thursday, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said his city’s schools will be closed on Friday. He urged local employers to consider allowing employees to work from home on Friday, if possible, or use the MetroNorth commuter rail. Additional trains are being added to the rail line, officials said.

While the bridge was less than 10 years old, “the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker ignited directly underneath the bridge structure,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “The steel did begin to overheat and warp.”

The tanker had been carrying a load of about 8,500 gallons when it crashed beneath the Fairfield Avenue bridge, officials said. The overpass did not appear in danger of collapsing, said Scott Hill, chief engineer for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Eucalitto said it’s unsafe to allow any traffic to pass underneath the bridge in either direction, so the entire bridge, which has beams that cross both spans of highway, has to be removed.

Large equipment was being brought to Connecticut Thursday evening to complete the demolition, which is expected to begin around 3 a.m. on Friday. Lamont said the work could take 24 hours or longer to complete. After that, the roadway may need to be repaved before it can reopen.

It will likely take about a year to replace the bridge, a major artery for the city of more than 91,000 people. Lamont said he is hoping to receive federal reimbursement to cover the cost.

The cause of the crash remains under police investigation and no charges have been filed.

About 160,000 vehicles travel that portion of I-95 in both directions daily, Eucalitto said.

Demolition began Friday on an Interstate 95 overpass in Norwalk that was damaged in a fiery crash along I-95 on Thursday morning. Both sides of the highway have been closed since the crash happened and are expected to remain closed until at least Monday morning.

I-95 has been closed since about 5:30 a.m. Thursday after a crash involving a tractor-trailer, a fuel truck and another vehicle. The vehicles burst into flames.

The truck, which was hauling gasoline, caught fire under the Fairfield Avenue overpass. While the damage is extensive, no one was injured in the crash and fire.

Gov. Lamont said the heat from the fire damaged the overpass and the bridge needs to be taken down.

That work started at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning and could take 24 hours or more to complete. During a news conference on Friday afternoon, Lamont urged people to stay away from the area for another 72 hours.

The Department of Transportation said excavators, dump trucks, and demolition shears will be used to break up the bridge deck, cut the support steel into smaller pieces, and remove the structural components.

Once the bridge is removed, DOT will mill and pave sections of I-95.

Repaving will take a couple of days.

They hope to have the travel lanes open by Monday’s morning rush-hour commute, Lamont said.

Metro-North is adding service over the weekend and on Monday because of the highway closure.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said two additional trains will operate on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, on the New Haven Line, from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal at 8:29 a.m. and 9:26 a.m. and from Grand Central Terminal to New Haven at 4:53 p.m. and 6:59 p.m.

Additional cars will be added to several New Haven Line trains to increase passenger-carrying capacity as well.

MTA said Station Ambassadors will be available to assist customers in New Haven on both Saturday and Sunday.

Metro-North is also laying out plans for to get fans to the Yankees games over the weekend.

The Yankees will take on the Detroit Tigers on Friday at 7:05 p.m., Saturday at 1:05 p.m., and Sunday at 1:35 p.m.

Metro-North's Yankee Clipper trains and shuttle trains between Grand Central Terminal, Harlem-125th Street, and Yankees-E 153rd Street stations will operate on their usual game-day schedules.

For all games, Metro-North also adds a stop at Yankees-E 153rd Street station to many Hudson Line express and local trains to provide more options for fans traveling to and from the game.

On Monday morning, Metro-North will add cars to its regularly scheduled trains to provide extra capacity.

Station ambassadors will be available at New Haven, Bridgeport, South Norwalk and Stamford stations from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

MTA said Metro-North is working closely with the Connecticut Department of Transportation about the repairs on I-95 and will make schedule adjustments as needed until all lanes are fully reopened.

Lamont has declared a state of emergency in response to the crash and closure and hopes the emergency declaration will lead to federal authorities reimbursing the state for the highway repairs.

"This emergency declaration will help expedite some of the resources needed for us to respond to this situation. I strongly encourage everyone to avoid this area for at least the next few days while the highway remains closed and to stay alert for updates," Lamont said in a release.
