Johnny Marr found worldwide fame in the 80s with cult British band The Smiths. One of Britain's most famous guitarists, Marr has played in a number of successful bands such as Modest Mouse and The Cribs as well as becoming a renowned session musician. After playing in a few bands and performing the odd solo gig in his mid-teens, Marr formed The Smiths with a poet and singer called Morrissey at the age of 18. They wrote the songs together and the band that formed in 1982 went on to become one of the truly iconic British acts of the 80s. Hit albums such as the self-titled The Smiths in 1984, Meat is Murder in 1985, The Queen is Dead in 1986 and finally Strangeways - Here We Come in 1987 became albums that helped define the era. Their music helped bring the guitar sound back to the mainstream, and their songs proudly stood as a musical backlash against the synth-pop chart music of the time. In 1987, creative differences led to the band splitting up, but thankfully their five-year run of huge success and critically acclaimed albums had already established Johnny Marr as one of the most influential songwriters and performers of the decade. Marr stayed incredibly busy after The Smiths' time was up, playing sessions with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney and both recording and touring with established bands such as The Pretenders and The The. Essentially, from 1987 until 2002 Johnny Marr worked with everyone who was anyone in the UK music industry. Collaborations included working with Billy Bragg, Talking Heads, The Pet Shop Boys, Kirsty MacColl and Black Grape. He also made a special one-off appearance playing with Oasis in 2001, as well as working with them on some album tracks in the studio. In more recent years he has toured and played with Modest Mouse extensively, including supporting R.E.M. on their US tour. Johnny is also a member of occasional super-group Seven Worlds Collide, which is made up from members of Radiohead, Crowded House and Pearl Jam. Together they have recorded a number of tracks to raise money for Oxfam. He also plays with The Healers and The Cribs, touring whenever he can. His solo album, The Messenger, was released through Warner Brothers in 2013 and Marr continues to be one of the very best live and studio artists.

Great decussion.
It was a great discussion of Johnny Marrs Guitars and stories behind them
Great time with a musical storyteller
I didn't know what to expect at this event. Just wanted to see Johnny in person. Ended up being a hell of a fun time. He talked about the book and his guitars, but he also gave us a glimpse into his songwriting style, his playing technique, his legendary tone, and much more. It was really special just to sit in a room with one of the greats while he told stories and played many of his most well known riffs, as well as some more obscure stuff. Q&A was nice, too. He really took the time to give honest answers and even played some tunes based on the questions he was asked.
Amazing Show
Johnny was charming, sharp, and the right balance of sweet (asked a boy that asked him to play How Soon is Now if he played because he was going to bring him on stage) and biting ("is that really the question you want to ask?")
Johnny Marr is a Genius!
As a huge fan of Johnny Marr and his magical guitar playing, this evening was everything I hoped for. Even though this was a book talk for Marr’s Guitars, there was plenty of guitar playing. He is also a completely charming and engaging storyteller. Came out an even bigger fan! Also the book is gorgeous!
Perfect venue, lovely book, and amazing artist
We have always loved seeing shows at the Warsaw, and this In Conversation event with Johnny Marr did not disappoint! We had excellent seats with unobstructed views, and it was truly an amazing experience to hear Johnny Marr talk about the book, his life, and of course his guitars. The book is beautifully done, and I highly recommend it to any fans or guitar enthusiasts.
Best guitarist in the world. Period.
Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Insightful, amusing and nostalgic.
Johnny Marr @ The Ford Theater Hollywood, CA
What a great night! Venue was beautiful, a very intimate place to see a guitar legend and his amazing band. Easy parking, great food options, and the staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The theater itself was a castle-themed outdoor venue with excellent sight-lines from anywhere. Lighting and sound/acoustics were excellent. Johnny and his band were at the top of their game. I had seen them earlier this year at the Theater at the Ace Hotel in downtown LA. Setlist was great, all the big hits and music from the new album Call The Comet. Johnny's playing and interaction with his very devoted audience was superb. His backing band are all highly-skilled musicians and an extremely "tight" unit.It was the last show of his US tour, so he brought out his lifelong friend Billy Duffy from The Cult to play the final cuple of encore songs. A fantastic experience. I can't wait to see Johnny on his next tour and I will definitely be back to the Ford Theater.
Great hooks, 6 Smiths tunes, 2 Electronic tunes and his stellar solo music made for an awesome, 2 hour show!
Johnny Marr is a Living Legend
From the moment he confidently swaggers on stage, you know the audience is in for an amazing, life-affirming show from this Guitar God. He’s also got the voice, charisma, showmanship, and most importantly the songs to make his concerts a must-see, brag-to-your-friends (and eventually your kids and grandkids) experience!!
Johnny Fuckin Marr
Johnny Marr is a genius guitarist with massive energy. And the band has come to sound so good now. It has reached to the point that the last show is always best!

What can be said about Johnny Fuckin Marr that hasn’t been said before. Greatest living guitarist with an ear for a great riff. And now more comfortable in the front man role. Not a great voice but strong enough to carry those songs and on the many Smiths tunes he is not tempted to ape Mozzer.
You could feel the love in the room which was not confined to Nile Rodgers who enthusiastically introduced his friend Johnny.
Seeing Johnny is the best way to remember the greatness of The Smiths and let’s hope there is one light that never goes out.

The show was fantastic and very intimate! Johnny is extremely talented, and very friendly. He interacted with the crowd, and played many guitar riffs practically in your face. He played several Smith songs better than what you here on the records. Bottom line, it was an Amazing show.
Johnny Marr is the genuine article. Originator, icon, in excellent form to boot. *Not* a heritage act, tho he knew just when to pull out Smiths material. Good light show too. A pleasure & privilege to see him play.

A Night With the Johnny Marr Orchestra review – ‘pumped symphonic’ classics
Aviva Studios, Manchester First large gig at new super-venue sees Marr magically reinvent Smiths, solo and Electronic tracks
‘I ’m going to need a new tour bus,” quips Johnny Marr , referring to the vast amount of people on the stage. His regular band of 10 years has expanded and now includes his son Nile on “guitar and fabulous harmonies”; a 30-piece orchestra – conducted by Fiona Brice – is here to provide what the 60-year-old frontman has called a “highly pumped symphonic feel”.
The occasion marks Marr’s 10 years as a solo artist and new solo best of, Spirit Power. It’s also the inaugural large music event at Manchester’s Aviva Studios. The product of the UK’s biggest cultural investment (£242m) on a venue since the Tate Modern is a vast space for 5,000 people with an unusually high ceiling allowing for spectacular lights and visuals.
Marr talks about how New Town Velocity – one of his loveliest solo songs – was inspired by walking around Manchester as a kid with big dreams, and performs it with film of himself pounding those streets as an adult after an illustrious 40 years in music. An orchestral rendition of the Smiths’ Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me is illustrated by photographer Chris Hunt’s book Beeton Grove: the photos of poverty in 1970s Longsight powerfully demonstrate the environment such songs came from.
The orchestra never feels bolted on and the new arrangements allow songs to be reinvented or extended. How Soon Is Now? has a new classical coda. Get the Message by Electronic – Marr’s 90s group with Bernard Sumner – has Bollywood-type strings. That song misses the New Order singer’s lighter vocals but Marr sings the Smiths’ Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want beautifully: the combination of acoustic guitar, flutes, xylophones and brass is magical.
Danceable solo track Easy Money sounds like a Wythenshawe Chic. A giant projection of Smiths bassist Andy Rourke – who died this year – is a lovely touch and the new arrangements of the band’s classics Panic and There Is a Light become joyous singalong celebrations. Hopefully we’ll hear more from the Johnny Marr Orchestra, if he can fit them on that bus.

Live Report: Johnny Marr – eventim Apollo, London
As Johnny Marr’s Spirit Power tour goes around the UK the British guitar and songwriting master shows the sky really is the limit.
The Manchester bred musician and producer has been going above and beyond, and each time he raises the level of ambition, always assessing previous efforts.
The “Johnny, Johnny, Johnny fuckin Marr” chants never go out of fashion at his shows. Rightly so. The west London venue is ideal for tonight’s event. A feted 20 tracks comprising of the artist’s decade long portfolio, blended with a generous handful of Smiths catalogue. If prior to this gig there is an argument to suggest the alluring ‘80s evergreens no longer are needed, it evaporates and is soon forgotten, such is the magnitude of the crowd response to the classic tracks.
The sold-out Hammersmith show is a feast of inventive guitar music, showmanship and crisp live production. The size of the place helps too – a chunky five thousand capacity – contributing to the sense of elevation, bigger definitely is better in this instance.
The pulsating ‘Sensory Street’ opens the set, it’s a stirring rendition that focuses minds before the attentive audience pick up on the guitar and drum led intro to ‘Panic’. It’s an enticing part one, as the electrifying ‘Generate! Generate!’ builds links to the next part of the set.
The illustrious electro pop statement of ‘Spirit Power and Soul’ emphasises the range and depth of the solo career, a path that has seen the musician stretch himself, adopting fresh production techniques, adding to an ever growing list of influences and the constant pushing of boundaries.
A move on to acoustic guitar is the indication of a shift being due, and intimacy is created with the retrospective looking, reflective vibe of ‘New Town Velocity’. Emotionally tender, the delivery changes the mood for the duration of the song.
Versatility is the underlying driver, however, as an effortless switch to ‘This Charming Man’ is made and massive cheers are heard in the space.
Thoughtfully distributed across the set, virtuous solos come at attractive frequency. Supremely melodic, they are immersive, which isn’t news yet the direct spotlight, the more focused lighting design, seems to be.
Keeping the conversation light-hearted and easy “here is a new one. Don’t be scared. It’s ok, it’s not shit”, he teases, as laughter is audible. The song in question is the infectious, rather seamless ‘Somewhere’. It is a treat.
A highlight of the night is when friend and collaborator Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys takes the stage. Their energetic cover of David Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’ is a magnificent surprise, a pinch me moment.
Seeing the chemistry is one thing, hearing the sound is something else. The two have worked together, maintained their friendship for more than thirty years. Released in 1989, Neil Tennant cowrote and sang on debut single ‘Getting Away With It’ by Electronic, Marr and Bernard Sumner’s popular project.
A splendid way to revisit the past, this rendition astonishes. When Marr plays the familiar solo, Tennant cites the year 1989, which he then goes on to repeat. A special example of the collaboration.
Sadly, the best performances do not go on and on, the time has come to wrap things up. “I want to dedicate this one to everybody here tonight and nobody fucking else”, he states, and Smiths anthem ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’ follows.
More than a decade on from the release of debut album ‘The Messenger’ the guitarist continues his creative reign on a journey that is so compelling.

Johnny Marr stuns Newcastle crowd with raucous setlist packed with classics from The Smiths
The ex-Smiths man graced the stage at Newcastle City Hall on Tuesday night for the first night of The Spirit Power Tour
- 12:26, 3 APR 2024
Johnny Marr kicked off his first live show of 2024 in Newcastle - and it was jam-packed with surprise classics.
The guitar hero graced the stage at Newcastle City Hall on Tuesday night when he launched The Spirit Power Tour and crowds were delighted to be treated some of The Smiths greatest songs. Johnny and his band stunned fans by performing a set list of tunes from across his entire recording career, and an abundance of surprise hits only served to heighten the atmosphere with support from Supergrass indie-icon Gaz Coombes who warmed things up hits from his latest album 'Turn the car around'.
The set included The Smiths’ classic ‘You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby’, Johnny’s first live performance of the song since 2019, and a cover of Iggy Pop’s ‘The Passenger’ - the first time Johnny has performed the song live. Johnny took to the stage dressed in a black denim jacket and black jeans, wearing his signature Fender Jaguar guitar strapped over his shoulder.

After performing ‘Sensory Street’, ‘Generate Generate’ and ‘Panic’, Johnny greeted the audience, saying: “Newcastle City Hall, alright?! Hello everyone! Nice to see you! This is the first night of our tour. I’m so happy to be here. I first came here in 1985, when I was a little dude. Now I’m a big little dude! This next song is from our first album, The Messenger, it’s a very personal song. It’s called New Town Velocity.”
After performing the sixth song of the set and fan-favourite, ‘This Charming Man’, Johnny introduced a new song, ‘Somewhere’. After a stunning performance of ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ and a high intensity rendition of ‘Get The Message’, Johnny led fans through a mass singalong of ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’.
As the superb set ended, the band left the stage as the crowd demanded more and gave a standing ovation. Returning to the stage for an encore, he closed the show with ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’. Johnny added: "Newcastle, thanks so much! This has been a lot of fun. What a great way for us to start our tour. We really appreciate it. This last song is dedicated to everybody in here - and no one else!”
Johnny Marr and his band are touring in celebration of the first decade of Johnny’s solo body of work - 10 years since the launch of his debut solo album The Messenger in 2013. The performance marked his first live show in Newcastle since performing an intimate set at the Northumbria University Students’ Union in April 2022.

The Cult add extra London show to 2024 UK anniversary tour
It comes after the band announced a 40th-anniversary tour earlier this month
The Cult have added an extra London show to their upcoming anniversary tour. Check out ticket details below.
The announcement comes just days after the rock icons announced details of an upcoming UK tour for the end of 2024 – which will see them celebrate 40 years as a band.
Upcoming shows will be held in 10 cities across the country, and mark the milestone anniversary of Ian Astbury and co. coming together as we recognise them today – swapping their name from the original title ‘Death Cult’ into ‘The Cult’.
Now, following the initial date at London’s Royal Albert Hall selling out, the band have announced details of a second show in the UK capital, this time held at the Roundhouse venue in Camden.
The date is added as an extension to the original run of shows and will take place on Tuesday, November 5 – the day after the Royal Albert Hall gig. Tickets are available now and you can check out an updated itinerary for the UK shows below.
The Cult 2024 updated tour dates are:
OCTOBER 21 – Leicester, De Montfort Hall 22– Swansea, Swansea Arena 24 – Edinburgh, Usher Hall [SOLD OUT] 25 – Manchester, O2 Apollo 27 – Bristol, Beacon [LOW TICKETS] 29 – York, Barbican 30 – Newcastle, O2 City Hall
Recommended
NOVEMBER: 1 – Portsmouth, Guildhall 2 – Wolverhampton, Civic Hall 4 – London, Royal Albert Hall [SOLD OUT] 5 – London, Roundhouse
The dates for 2024 come following a tour the band embarked on last year, celebrating 40 years since their first formation under the name ‘Death Cult’ .
Taking place around the UK, Ireland and the US, the tour was called ‘Death Cult 8323’ and saw Duffy and Astbury return to play iconic venues they previously performed in at the start of their career.
The live shows focused on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and also boasted a setlist that spanned “the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”
Announcing the new run of dates, guitarist Billy Duffy said: “Following up from the great energy of ‘Death Cult 8323’ shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to ‘Cult 8424’… CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!”
More recently, Billy Duffy joined Johnny Marr on stage in Frome last summer to play tracks by The Smiths and Depeche Mode .
