Overall the tour was great. The city tour in Whitehorse felt a bit rushed. I would have loved more options for activities like the dog sledding tour I purchased separately through Arctic Range Adventures. I really appreciated the Aurora Centre set up and the comfort and pickup and drop-off. I loved seeing the lights!

It has been an amazing experience. I was lucky to be able to see the auroras for 2 days and the truth is that Shungo and Jesica (from Canada) made the tour very dynamic and entertaining. They take much care of us. It is very worth it.

Gems of the Yukon | Hiking Tour with Hotel Stays
My lifelong dream to come to the Yukon and it was everything I hoped for and more! High five to the Fresh Adventures crew for putting together an epic adventure I won't soon forget. The hikes were tough but absolutely worth it and the views from the top were unreal. I've been on a trip with Fresh Adventures in the Rockies before and was happy to see that they offered a Yukon trip as well. The guides, Carl and Alex were fun to be around and the rest of the group was amazing. Loved all the good times and the laughs in the van. Thanks for a great trip!

Very satisfied. Two small points that, although good, could be improved: 1. list of equipment sent beforehand was generic. Temperatures were in the the range of 25-27 and we were told to bring hat and gloves ! 2. Food at times was a problem especially lunch. Although we knew it was not included, finding where to buy and where to go in the evening for dinner was at times a challenge.
Yukon River: The Classic ( Lake Laberge to Carmacks)
Working with Tour Radar was easy and helpful. They sent timely information about my trip and helped the tour company connect with me to give more specific details. Ruby Range Adventure was a wonderful tour company, and I would be happy to go on another adventure with them again. Thank you, Tour Radar, for helping me find the perfect getaway!
What people love about Yukon And Northwest Territories Tours
A very friendly and professional team and I would happily use again. I saw the aurora twice and missed the third night it was showing because of an early morning flight. The photos taken by the guides were excellent
Good accommodations Good equipment Very Good guides The Wildlife tour is not a good value.
Every employee we met from pick up @ the airport to drop off after our final trip to the Aurora Center was wonderful - Professional, pleasant, and friendly. Price was right! Hotel was OK. My one important critique was we got absolutely no info on the Aurora Borealis. I expected a video or “lecture” or some explanation about what we were looking for/seeing. (And, so so so very happy we saw them!!!) This was a trip specifically to see the northern lights and we heard nothing about them. I will (and have steady) recommend your tour to others but tell them to study up on the Aurora before they go. Thanks for asking!

Excellent tour, great guide!
We wanted to visit the Preserve wildlife park and WhoWhatWhere were happy to help at short notice. Harmony picked us up from our hotel and drove us to and then around the Preserve. Her local knowledge was amazing and she knew so much about the animals as well. We had a wonderful afternoon
Who What Where is different!
Teena is a great communicator (she’ll book via text!), a flexible planner, and a knowledgeable guide. We loved our time with her and will absolutely be recommending her in the future. Thanks, Teena!
Best tour I have ever been on
Best tour I have been on!! They accommodated our request on such a short notice and went far and beyond the tour. Definitely recommended!
Lots of local knowledge!
One of the most striking things about the tours was the high level of experience-based local knowledge; not only about what we were seeing but also about what life is really like in the Canadian North. Teena shared a great deal of her local awareness and pride in her region.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why Choose Frontier
In operation since 1987, we have been providing quality tours at a reasonable price for 35 years in Skagway. Our professional tour guides are fully trained and happy to go the extra step to make your tour experience memorable. We have hundreds of 5 star reviews. We are the owners and operators of our tours and guarantee their quality. You are not booking through a middle-man with us. You can also come by our office in Skagway to meet us in person and have a contact location in case of problems. We are also only a phone call or email away. We are very responsive to any questions or concerns you may have.
What to Expect
Our knowledgeable guides will always provide you with an exceptional tour experience. They are friendly, courteous, offer personal service and welcome your questions. Our equipment is clean and professionally maintained, as your safety is always our first concern.
All tours are fully narrated and feature plenty of photo stops where you can disembark the bus and breathe the fresh mountain air. Our tours travel up the Klondike Highway, one of the most scenic highways in North America, through multiple climate zones with dramatic vistas around every turn. Our knowledge of the area allows us to adjust our routes/stops to make the most of the day. We actively search for wildlife and will stop for sightings as long as it is safe to do so.
Do you pick up at the ships?
Yes, we pick up pierside where the pier meets land outside of security gates. This is also where ship tours meet. This is our default pick up location. (See more pier specific details in next section). For all our tours, you do have the option to meet at our office downtown at the Golden North Hotel, 3rd & Broadway. There are SMART bus city shuttles providing transportation to town from the ships for a nominal fee or it is approximately a 10-15 minute flat walk from the ship piers. Your confirmation from us will provide you with full details on meeting instructions and our contact information.
Boarding begins 15 minutes prior to departure. Please be on time and in the pre-arranged pick up location for the tour. Due to scheduling, if you are late, we may not be able to wait and we cannot give refunds in this case. Please call 1-877-983-2512 or 907-713-7527 if you are having problems locating the tour.
At the conclusion of the tour, you will have the option of returning to your ship or you may be dropped off in town. We guarantee we will return you to your cruise ship before departure time. However, if you choose to be dropped off in town, we are not responsible for your return to the cruise ship before departure.
How can I find you at the dock?
For Broadway and Ore docks, we will meet you at the area where the pier meets shore outside security. This is the tour waiting area (where all ship tours meet as well). At Broadway dock, walk across a short pier with a large parking area in front of your cruise ship. At the Ore dock walk across a short pier at the side of the cruise ship and there is a red shelter next to a large parking area. You will look for someone with a FRONTIER EXCURSIONS sign.
What if our ship changes docks?
We will be notified if your ship changes docks. Stay at your ship pier tour waiting area, and we will locate you!
What if our ship arrives late or doesn't arrive at all?
In the case of late arriving of ships (very uncommon), we will try to accommodate you on a later tour. If this is not feasible, you will not be charged. If your ship doesn’t arrive due to unexpected problems, we will be notified. In this circumstance, there will be no charge.
Is there a chance of missing my cruise ship departure?
In all our years of operation, we have NEVER missed a ship! Even though your ship may suggest an all aboard time of 1-2 hours prior to departure, the gangway remains in place for at least 30 minutes prior to departure. 30 minutes prior to departure is the official all-aboard time for your ship and ship sponsored tours will be returning to the pier close to that time. We always have at least 1 hour of buffer time before a ship all-aboard time in order to get you back with a comfortable margin of time. We carry a GPS communication device on all vehicles that allows messaging to our base in Skagway in case of emergencies or delays. We will not book you on any tour that is not back with time to spare to make your ship departure. We do drop off at the ship per and we guarantee that you will make your ship, or we will pay for your transportation to the next port. (This only applies to cruise ships docked in Skagway. If your ship docks in Haines and you choose to make your own transportation plans to Skagway for a tour with us, we cannot guarantee your passage back to Haines. If there is a ferry breakdown or some other complication in you getting back to Haines for your ship all-aboard there, we are not responsible and will not pay for your transport to the next port). If you choose not to be dropped off at the ship pier after the tour but in town instead and then subsequently miss your ship, we do not take any responsiblity for that as it is up to you at the point of drop off to get back to your ship before the all-aboard time.
What are Passport Requirements and restrictions to crossing the borders?
All our tours travel the scenic South Klondike Highway, which crosses the Canadian border just 15 miles north of Skagway. The USA border station is only 7 miles from Skagway and Identification is checked there on the way coming back into Skagway from the White Pass. Passports are REQUIRED for the USA and Canada border crossing. You will need an Original Valid Passport, Passport Card, Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST) for crossing the border to Canada. Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) are only allowed for the USA border crossing and can be used only on the White Pass Summit & City tour. https://www.frontierexcursions.com/tour/white-pass-summit-city-tour/
For some nationalities, additional documentation (like a Visa) may be required for entry to Canada and/or USA. Single-entry Visas are acceptable for entry to Canada at this border on a tour. Canada Visas (if needed for your nationality) are required on all tours except the White Pass Summit & City Tour which is the only tour that does not cross through Canada immigration. Passports (and USA Visa if required) are still needed on the White Pass Summit & City tour. Children with USA or Canada citizenship (15 and younger) accompanying parents should have a Passport OR an original or certified (raised seal) of birth certificate (no copies allowed). If one or both parents are not traveling with the child, a letter of authorization from the absent parent(s) is also necessary to cross into Canada. Canadian Border Service Agency recommends that parents who share custody of their children carry copies of their legal custody documents. You must carry a consent letter to provide authorization for you to take them on a trip and enter Canada if you share custody and the other parent is not traveling with you, OR if you are NOT the parent/legal guardian of the children you are traveling with. The consent letter must include the custodial parents’ or legal guardians’ full name, address and telephone number, child’s details, and person’s details of who they are traveling with. Having the letter notarized will support its authenticity, especially if you are taking a longer trip and crossing the border several times. Border services officers may ask additional questions to the children you are traveling with if you are not the parent/guardian or are traveling without both parents/guardians. Here is a link to a sample letter that can be filled out before travel.
Those who lack the necessary identification will not be allowed to board the tour, and, as a consequence, may miss it. No refund will be given under these circumstances. While we will do everything possible to accommodate passengers lacking identification, there is no guarantee that suitable arrangements can be made. If you have any questions regarding proper identification for the border crossing, please contact us.
Passengers with a criminal conviction (misdemeanor or felony) including severe traffic violations, such as DUI or Hit & Run, will be denied entrance into Canada so should not join any tour besides the White Pass Summit & City tour or our rafting tours in Dyea.
How do I pay for the tour?
For most of our tours (White Pass Summit & City Tour, Yukoner, and Yukon Discovery) we have an automated booking system in place for you to enter your Payment information online at the time of booking (through RezdyPay). There is $5 deposit per order charged at the time of booking. The balance on the order will be charged on the day of the tour. (If you pay the $5 deposit with PayPal we will send you a payment link to pay the remainder in full.) Your order will be Pending once entered and we will send it back Confirmed once we review your information and verify availability. For our more White Pass & Rafting combo tour we have you fill out a Reservation Request form. After we receive your Request form, we will email you to confirm we have the space and get any additional information we need from you then send you a confirmation by email and Payment link to pay in full in advance (or we can call you to get a credit card for $5 deposit and charge the balance on the day of the tour). Finally, if you do not show up for the tour, your credit card on file in RezdyPay will be charged the full amount. If we don’t have a credit card on file but have sent you a payment link for the balance of the tour and you do not pay by 24 hours before the tour we will cancel your booking; See our Cancellation Policy below.
What is your cancellation policy?
In booking a tour you are agreeing to pay for all the seats you reserve, unless you give Frontier Excursions & Adventures 24 hours notice of cancellation or changes to your reservation. Failure to give notice of cancellation or changes to your reservation will result in your credit card being charged for all the seats you reserved for the tour. (The only exception is if your cruise ship does not make its scheduled stop at Skagway, if the ship is delayed arriving to port and we cannot reschedule your tour, if you are quarantined in your cabin for illness, or if Frontier Excursions & Adventures must cancel the tour for any reason.) Frontier Excursions retains the right to cancel a tour for any reason, in which case you will receive a full refund. If you do cancel before the 24 hour period we will refund your $5 deposit or your full amount if you have paid in advance.
How should I dress?
Weather may be windier/wetter/cooler/warmer on the tour than at the time of departure as we travel through different climate zones. The best way to dress is in layers, so that you can shed a layer when warm, or add a layer if cool. Top your shirt with a sweatshirt/sweater/fleece, plus a wind/waterproof jacket, and you should be comfortable for the day. Heavy parkas are usually not recommended for summertime. If you come from a warm climate you may also consider bringing a hat or gloves for warmth. Temperatures can vary from upper 30s at the White Pass in cooler weather to 90 in the Yukon on a warm summer day. So, consider the general weather of the day before deciding how many layers to bring. For example, if it is a warm and sunny day in Skagway you will most likely not need raincoats or warm sweaters/hats/gloves. But if it seems cooler/cloudy/rainy then bring more layers. Comfortable shoes are also recommended. Bring a camera and binoculars are recommended although our vehicles have one for use.
Are restrooms available on tour?
Our mini-buses are not equipped with restrooms. Our tours follow the South Klondike Highway through much wilderness but with very limited facilities. There are primitive outhouses available for use on all tours and the 6.5 hour Yukon Discovery tour has modern restrooms available at Caribou Crossing and/or Carcross at mid-point of the tour. Our Yukoner (4 hour) tour stops at the Yukon Suspension bridge and there is a modern restroom available. Be aware there may be the possibility of up to 1.5-2 hours or so without a restroom break. If you have issues with needing more frequent restroom stops, you may be better off booking a roundtrip train tour or bus tour on a large motorcoach equipped with restroom. These are available through your ship offered tours.
What type of vehicles do you use?
For our bus tours, we use comfortable custom mini-coaches, with a 13-to-28 passenger capacity (depending on group size). All feature large touring windows, bucket seats and PA systems. We have an on staff mechanic, and our vehicles are meticulously maintained for safety.
Our vehicles are NOT wheelchair or scooter accessible. If you are semi-ambulatory and use a walker or can transfer from a wheelchair and go up and down a few steps with assistance, we can most likely help you off and on our buses. Please inform us of any limited mobility situation when you book. We would also need to save space on the bus for a walker or folding wheelchair.
How do I decide which tour is best for me?
When considering your tour choice, keep in mind your preferences as to group size, time available, and budget.
To see the most and best variety in your day, consider the Yukon Territory (Yukoner and Yukon Discovery). The scenery is different than what you’ll see along the Inside Passage which is temperate coastal rainforest. As you travel over the White Pass and farther inland toward the Yukon, the climate becomes drier and ecosystems change. You’ll get above the treeline into sub-arctic alpine tundra at the White Pass, then travel into Boreal forest wilderness as you approach the Yukon. Also, regardless of the weather in Skagway, it’s usually better in Canada over the White Pass. Our best chances of seeing wildlife, such as bears, also improves as you go toward the Yukon (though is possible on any of our tours).
If you want a shorter tour that covers the main highlights on a budget and leaves more free time for you to shop or do a second tour during your day in port, then the White Pass Summit & City Tour give you the history of the gold rush and some incredible scenery in the shortest time frame at 2.75 hours. The Yukoner, at 4 hours is also a good option for a shorter tour.
For more active tours and outdoor adventure consider our sister company, Skagway Float Tours. We have a Combo day where you can combine one of our shorter bus tours with either the Scenic River Float or the Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float.
Will we see wildlife?
For wildlife sightings such as bears, moose, mountain goats and others, the Yukon is the best possibility. Approximately 30-50% of Yukon excursions see some type of wildlife. Wildlife sightings are most active in May and June. For water-related wildlife, such as eagles and seals, the Skagway Float Tours (Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float or Scenic River Float) are best. Remember, wildlife sightings, while occurring frequently, are at the whim of Mother Nature!
What's the difference between your tours and the train?
The train is a great trip through the mountains and an engineering landmark, and train buffs should plan on including it in their visit to Skagway. However, if you want a great tour no matter the means of transportation, you’ll find that our bus tours do parallel the train route in part and offer advantages including multiple photo stops and a chance to interact with your guide. At the stops all passengers can get out to take in the fresh mountain air and to take as many photos as desired where as the train is in constant motion. Also you can get personalized attention from your guide as you have the opportunity to ask questions and capture family photos with the guide as your photographer. In addition, you’ll find our bus tours offer great value for the money.
How soon should I book?
We highly recommend you book early (several months in advance) to guarantee your desired tour. You may book via our website or call us. Our longer tours to the Yukon and Yukon border book up fastest. Our White Pass Summit and City tour often has closer in availability.
Can I book a tour after arriving in Skagway?
Yes, our sales office is located in the Golden North Hotel building at 3rd and Broadway in the heart of downtown. There is a shuttle stop across the street from our location, so if you take a shuttle from the ship, you can request a drop off at our office. Your best rate will always come by booking directly through us. We may also be reached by phone at 907.983.2512, or out-of-town toll free at 877.983.2512. Please be aware that some tours may be sold out on the day of your arrival, especially busy port days like Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Situated in Canada's far north, the Yukon lies within the region known as the Aurora Oval. This oval-shaped area around the polar region has frequent and intense auroral activity. This unique location, combined with the territory's low light pollution and vast open spaces, creates an ideal setting for experiencing clearer and more vibrant displays of the aurora.
One of the key factors that make the Yukon a prime destination ( 1 ) for viewing the Northern Lights is its minimal light pollution. The territory's vast open spaces and sparse population contribute to remarkably dark skies. This lack of light pollution allows the aurora to shine through with clarity and enhances the visual impact of the lights.
The vast open spaces of the Yukon add another layer of magnificence to the Northern Lights experience. Imagine being surrounded by nothing but untouched wilderness, far away from city lights and distractions. In this pristine setting, the aurora becomes the focal point, captivating your senses and drawing you into its ethereal dance.
Clear, dark skies are of utmost importance when it comes to viewing the Northern Lights. When the skies are clear and free from clouds, the vibrant colors of the aurora can be seen vividly against the backdrop of the night sky.
The weather conditions in the Yukon can vary, and it's essential to plan accordingly. Cloud cover can obstruct the view of the Northern Lights, so keeping an eye on weather forecasts is helpful. Although it's impossible to predict with absolute certainty, nights with clear or partially cloudy skies are more likely to have a remarkable display of the aurora. Local tourism centers, tour guides, and accommodations in the Yukon can provide valuable information and updates on weather conditions to help optimize your Northern Lights experience.
In terms of climate, the Yukon's winter is cold. Between November and March , the temperature is between -40 and -13 degrees Celsius. It's important to dress warmly during your Northern Lights trip. Proper winter gear, including insulated jackets, hats, gloves, and warm footwear, is essential for enjoying the experience to the fullest. Many accommodations in the Yukon offer cozy lodging options with fireplaces and hot drinks to keep you warm. Northern Lights viewing areas often have an outdoor fire and a place of shelter, like a heated wall tent.
To fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Northern Lights and explore the other wonders of the Yukon, it is recommended to plan a stay of at least three to five days . This duration allows for flexibility in terms of weather conditions and increases the chances of witnessing the Northern Lights. It also provides an opportunity to engage in other winter activities, such as dog sledding, snowshoeing, or ice fishing.

Best Places in Yukon to see Northern Lights
Wondering where to see Northern Light in Yukon? There are two main locations for witnessing the Northern Lights in Yukon . Each destination provides a unique experience along with a variety of amenities to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay.
1. Whitehorse
As the capital of the Yukon, Whitehorse offers a convenient base for experiencing the Northern Lights. There are regular flights in and out of the city, so Whitehorse is often the first stop on any Yukon itinerary . The city provides a range of accommodation options, catering to various budgets and preferences. There is an array of restaurants, cafes, and bars serving local and international cuisine, ensuring a delightful culinary experience.
2. Dawson City
Dawson City, known for its rich Klondike Gold Rush history, also serves as an excellent location for Northern Lights viewing. This charming town offers a unique blend of heritage and adventure. Accommodation options include historic hotels, cozy cabins, and charming guesthouses, immersing you in the town's rich cultural ambiance. Local eateries, pubs, and restaurants provide a range of dining options, allowing you to savor local flavors while recounting the tales of the Gold Rush era.
When it comes to viewing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, choosing the right accommodation can greatly enhance your experience. From downtown hotels to lakeside cottages and remote lodges, each option has unique features and benefits.
1. Downtown hotels
Downtown hotels in cities like Whitehorse offer convenience and easy access to amenities. They provide a range of facilities, including comfortable rooms, on-site dining, and proximity to local attractions and tour operators. If you prefer the comforts of urban life while having the Northern Lights within reach, downtown hotels are a suitable choice. You can stay in downtown and then head to remote locations on the nights you want to view the Northern Lights. Hotels include the Best Western Gold Rush Inn and Raven Inn.
The proximity to urban areas may result in light pollution, which can diminish the visibility of the Northern Lights. While you can still catch glimpses of the lights near downtown, they appear more vibrant further away from the city.
2. Lakeside accommodation
There are some accommodation options near lakes in the Yukon. They provide a serene and picturesque setting, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. These accommodations often offer cozy interiors, stunning views, and a peaceful atmosphere. Being away from urban areas, you can enjoy darker skies and a higher chance of witnessing vibrant displays of the Northern Lights. The Inn on the Lake is a popular choice for this type of accommodation.
3. Remote lodges
Remote lodges offer an immersive experience in the heart of nature. These accommodations, often nestled in pristine landscapes, provide an excellent opportunity to escape light pollution and fully embrace the Northern Lights. These packages include guided tours, outdoor activities, and knowledgeable staff who can enhance your aurora viewing experience.
Remote lodges, like Northern Lights Resort and Spa, are typically located further away from urban areas. Keep in mind that transportation arrangements may be required for additional excursions or to reach nearby towns for additional services.
No matter which accommodation option you choose, the Yukon's vast landscapes and its dedication to preserving natural wonders ensures an unforgettable Northern Lights experience. Chat to one of our Vacation Advisors, who can help you select the option that best aligns with your preferences.
Yukon offers several transportation options for travelers to navigate the vast landscapes and reach locations for viewing the Northern Lights.
In our multi-day Yukon Aurora tours, some transportation, like airport to hotel transfers, is included. For example, on our Northern Lights of the Yukon trip , you’ll get picked up from the Whitehorse airport and be taken to a downtown hotel. Then, each night, enjoy guided northern lights viewing. Knowledgeable guides will take you to optimal viewing spots, share insight about the Northern Lights, and provide photography tips. This is a convenient option for those unfamiliar with the region and seeking a hassle-free experience.
While it is possible to rent a car and explore the Yukon at your own pace, some travellers find it difficult to navigate the winter road and weather conditions. There is a taxi company in Whitehorse, which is useful if you want to get to restaurants or do additional sightseeing on your own.
In addition to witnessing the breathtaking Northern Lights in the Yukon, add variety to your trip by participating in exciting day tours and engaging in a range of outdoor activities. During daylight hours, immerse yourself in the pristine winter landscapes and embark on unforgettable adventures. Here are some captivating activities to consider:
1. Dogsledding
Glide through snowy landscapes while being pulled by a team of energetic and friendly sled dogs. Dogsledding allows you to appreciate the harmony between humans, animals, and nature while reveling in the tranquility of the winter wilderness.
2. Ice fishing
Embrace the traditional Canadian winter pastime of ice fishing. Venture onto frozen lakes and drill a hole through the thick ice to drop your line and wait for a fish to bite. Ice fishing provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature, appreciate the serenity of the frozen surroundings, and potentially catch lake trout or Arctic grayling.
3. Snowmobiling
Feel the exhilaration as you zip through snow-covered trails on a snowmobile. This high-speed adventure allows you to explore the vast Yukon landscapes with ease, reaching remote areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Enjoy the adrenaline rush and panoramic views as you navigate through winter wonderlands, experiencing the raw beauty of the region.
4. Snowshoeing
Strap on a pair of snowshoes and traverse through snow-covered forests along pristine trails, immersing yourself in the tranquility of the winter landscape. Snowshoeing offers a slower pace, allowing you to appreciate the intricate details of nature while getting a great workout.
While the Northern Lights captivate the night sky, the Midnight Sun is a completely different natural phenomenon. In the summer months, particularly around the summer solstice, the Midnight Sun occurs in the high latitudes, including the Yukon. During this period, the sun remains visible even at midnight. The bright and continuous daylight provides opportunities for outdoor adventures, such as hiking, canoeing, and enjoying extended hours of exploration under the sun. If you visit the Yukon during the summer, you will not be able to see the Northern Lights because of the Midnight Sun.
The difference between the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights lies in their occurrence and appearance. The Midnight Sun is a result of the Earth's axial tilt, causing the sun to remain above the horizon for extended periods during summer. In contrast, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a phenomenon that occurs year-round but is most visible during the dark winter months. The Northern Lights are a mesmerizing display of colorful lights dancing across the night sky, caused by solar particles interacting with the Earth's atmosphere.
Cultural significance of the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights hold deep cultural significance in the Indigenous communities of the Yukon.
For Indigenous peoples, the Northern Lights are not merely a scientific phenomenon; they are seen as celestial spirits dancing in the sky, telling stories and communicating with the Earth. The lights are often considered a connection between the physical and spiritual realms, carrying messages from ancestors, and serving as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all living beings.
On your Northern Lights journey, you might have the opportunity to engage with local Indigenous tourism operators, cultural centers, and communities. They offer opportunities to learn and listen. Through this interaction, you can cultivate a deeper understanding of the Northern Lights' cultural significance and learn about the rich Indigenous heritage of the Yukon.
When embarking on a journey to witness the captivating Northern Lights in the Yukon, it is essential to practice responsible tourism. Respecting the environment, wildlife, and local communities is crucial to preserve the beauty of the natural surroundings for future generations. Here are some key principles to keep in mind:
1. Minimize your impact
Leave no trace as you explore the Northern Lights viewing areas. Follow the principle of "pack it in, pack it out" by carrying out any trash or waste you generate. Respect nature's delicate balance by refraining from littering, damaging vegetation, or disturbing wildlife habitats. Remember, you are a guest in the pristine wilderness of the Yukon, and it is essential to treat the environment with care and consideration.
2. Follow local guidelines
Familiarize yourself with any guidelines or regulations set forth by local authorities or tour operators. These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of visitors and the protection of the environment. Be mindful of any restricted areas, designated viewing spots, or specific instructions provided by guides.
3. Respect local communities
Engage with local communities respectfully and learn about their culture and traditions. Seek opportunities to support local businesses and artisans, promoting economic sustainability. When interacting with Indigenous communities, always follow cultural protocols and seek permission before taking photographs or participating in cultural activities.
4. Educate yourself
Before your trip, take the time to learn about the Yukon's ecosystems, wildlife, and cultural heritage. Understanding the local environment and its significance will deepen your appreciation for the Northern Lights and the region. Educate yourself on the Northern Lights phenomenon, Indigenous perspectives, and any specific ecological considerations that may apply.
Let your journey to witness the Northern Lights in the Yukon be not just a personal adventure, but also a sustainable and respectful experience. Embrace responsible travel practices, respect the environment and local communities, and create lasting memories while leaving a positive impact on this remarkable destination.
There are several aurora forecasting tools and resources available to help you predict and plan your viewing experience. These online platforms and smartphone apps provide real-time information about solar activity and aurora predictions.
1. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC)
Operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the SWPC (2) offers valuable data and forecasts related to space weather, including the Northern Lights. Their website provides a range of information, such as the Kp index (a measurement of geomagnetic activity), solar wind data, and geomagnetic storm predictions. Monitoring the SWPC's updates can give you insights into the likelihood and intensity of the Northern Lights.
2. University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks maintains an informative website that includes aurora forecasts and real-time data. Their Aurora Forecast page provides a 30-minute forecast for the Northern Lights' visibility, based on factors like solar wind speed and density. The site also features an interactive map showing the probability of viewing the lights in different areas of the Yukon.
3. Aurora Alerts North
Aurora Alerts North is a smartphone app designed specifically for predicting the Northern Lights in the Yukon and other northern regions. The app utilizes real-time solar wind data and algorithms to provide users with alerts and forecasts for potential aurora sightings. It offers customizable notifications based on your preferred viewing location, ensuring you never miss an opportunity to witness the lights.
4. Social media
Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have communities where individuals share their experiences, photos, and current sightings of the aurora.
It’s important to remember that aurora forecasts are not foolproof, as the lights are a natural phenomenon influenced by various factors. However, utilizing these tools can provide valuable insights into solar activity and geomagnetic conditions.
Even without precise predictions, simply being in a prime viewing location with clear skies and minimal light pollution can offer unexpected, awe-inspiring Northern Lights displays.
So, use these aurora forecasting tools and resources to prepare for your trip, but don't forget to embrace the enchantment of the unknown. Allow the Northern Lights to surprise and delight you as they paint the Yukon's sky.
To ensure an unforgettable experience while viewing the Aurora Borealis in the Yukon, it's important to be prepared for cold nights. Here are some valuable tips to make the most of your Northern Lights adventure:
1. Dress warmly
It's essential to bundle up in layers, especially if you visit the Yukon in winter. Dress in thermal or woolen base layers, followed by an insulated jacket or parka. Wear a hat, gloves, scarf, and thermal socks to keep extremities warm. Thermal boots with good traction are also recommended. Some of our Northern Lights vacation packages include winter clothing rentals so you can save space in your luggage!
2. Use the comfortable seating provided
Northern Lights viewing sites provide benches or other seating options. On guided tours, you are taken to sites where seating is provided so you don’t have to stand for long periods of time. Be patient and stay prepared, as the lights can appear and disappear throughout the night. Do use the seating as you could be there for many hours.
3. Check the conditions
Before heading out, monitor weather forecasts and aurora activity updates. Clear skies are ideal for optimal Northern Lights viewing, so a night with minimal cloud cover is best. Utilize aurora forecasting tools and resources to gauge the likelihood of a vibrant display. While you’ll book your Northern Lights trip months in advance, checking the weather and aurora forecasts will help you prepare for the conditions, get excited, and manage expectations.
4. Bring photography gear
If you're interested in capturing the magic of the Northern Lights through photography, consider bringing a tripod to keep your camera steady during long exposures. Wide-angle lenses with a low aperture (e.g., f/2.8 or lower) are recommended. Familiarize yourself with your camera's manual settings for long exposures and experiment with different shutter speeds and ISO settings to achieve the desired results. Generally, you’ll want a low shutter speed and a high ISO value, though it does depend on how quickly the lights are moving and how bright they are.
- The intensity and colors of the Northern Lights vary depending on the solar activity and atmospheric conditions.
- The lights often appear green but can also display shades of pink, purple, yellow, and even red.
- The Yukon's long winter nights, from November to April, provide extended periods of darkness for Northern Lights viewing.
- The Northern Lights can be seen in the Yukon during the fall, from August to October.

7 Authentic Indigenous Experiences And Tours Near Whitehorse, Yukon
C anada’s Yukon Territory is home to 14 Yukon First Nations and eight language groups. The Northwest Territories and British Columbia’s Indigenous groups have traditional territory in Yukon, and, according to the government of Yukon, approximately 25 percent of the area’s population are Indigenous Peoples.
For visitors to Yukon , or its capital city of Whitehorse , learning and experiencing the Indigenous culture of the area is a rich and rewarding experience. Today, the area offers numerous opportunities to learn about the history and contributions of Yukon’s First Nations People and the experiences are not ones to be missed.
Even better, it’s easier than ever to have adventures and experiences that celebrate the diverse cultures of the Yukon. Besides the Long Ago People’s Place, I recently had the chance to experience Indigenous culture near Whitehorse during a sponsored trip to the Yukon.
For a truly impactful visit, here are seven authentic Indigenous experiences and tours everyone should seek out near Whitehorse, Yukon.
1. The MacBride Museum
A perfect “first stop” in Whitehorse to learn about the city, the history of the Yukon Gold Rush and its Indigenous people is at the downtown MacBride Museum . Recently named “The Most Underrated Attraction” by MSN Travel Canada, this recently expanded museum has a thoroughly curated collection and history of the First Nations People who lived, hunted, and helped create this area.
Over 40,000 objects in the MacBride galleries illustrate stories from Yukon First Nations, the natural world, the Klondike Gold Rush, and more. The First Nations Gallery especially focuses on the 14 First Nations in the Yukon and explores their history from prehistoric times with some truly outstanding artwork and artifacts.
Pro Tip: If you visit Whitehorse in June, don’t miss the celebrations during National Indigenous Peoples Day, especially the multi-day Adäka Cultural Festival on the Whitehorse waterfront.
2. Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre
Travel far back in time at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre to the Ice Age and earlier when the Bering Strait Land Bridge created the ancient land of Beringia. Today, the museum offers presentations and preservation of the First Nations and the unique Ice Age history of the area.
Learn about the science and history of the once-vast subcontinent of Beringia and how its First Nations People came to populate the land. You can also learn about how the center’s programs and services are helping build community in Whitehorse.
3. Long Ago Peoples Place
One of my favorite experiences of my visit, the Long Ago Peoples Place is located about an hour west of Whitehorse. It is a recreated traditional Southern Tutchone First Nations camp that celebrates culture, structures, and tools through hands-on exploration and programming.
Even if you have a half-day to spend, meeting Meta Williams, one of the co-founders of this unique authentic camp, is worth the trip just to learn her knowledge.
Visitors can take medicinal plant walks, learn about traditional living, engage in workshops like a drum-making class, help collect edible plants, and catch a glimpse of the traditional ways of the Southern Tutchone First Nations People.
Williams herself is a treasure to meet. A Yukon First Nations member with family ties to several Yukon First Nations communities, she and Harold Johnson started Long Ago Peoples Place more than 25 years ago as a way to share their stories, culture, and skills with others in order to break down barriers.
4. Fort Selkirk Weekend Tour
New in 2023 is the Fort Selkirk Weekend Tour with Teri-Lee of Tutchone Tours . While Teri-Lee has hosted Yukon River cruises from Minto to historic Fort Selkirk, we were the first group to experience her weekend camping tour.
In addition to learning about Fort Selkirk and its role in Yukon history, we camped in large canvas tents and spent the days with Teri-Lee to learn about the history and culture of the First Nations. The canvas tents all come with platform beds and a cast-iron stove to keep the chill of night at bay.
Teri-Lee led us in an Indigenous beading class, cooked up samples of First Nations cuisine, helped us forage for tangy little soapberries to make “soapberry ice cream,” collected sap for more spruce salve, and shared the songs and stories from her people around the campfire at night.
Daily boat tours gave us the chance to experience travel on the Yukon River to spot wildlife like Dall sheep and moose. A thorough tour of the amazingly preserved Fort Selkirk Historic Site rounded out the weekend.
Pro Tip: Tutchone Tours also offers day trips to Fort Selkirk. This tour includes an hour-long river boat ride to Fort Selkirk, where Teri-Lee expertly guides you through the restored buildings of the area. The tours leave from Minto, a historic abandoned village along the Klondike Highway, so budget about 2 hours to drive there from Whitehorse.
5. Carcross
Located just south of Whitehorse along the Klondike Highway, Carcross is a unique community within the Traditional Territory of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation .
Dotted with emerald-colored, glacier-fed lakes and home to the smallest desert in the world, Carcross is also rich with Indigenous art and culture, and that culture is highlighted at Haa Shagóon Hídi Learning Centre , which translates to “Our Ancestors’ House.” This museum/community center is easy to spot by its eight towering totem poles out front, but the center also delves into the history, art, and traditions that make up Carcross.
Carcross itself is a fun and interesting little city, home to the oldest hotel in the territory, the only one-way street in the Yukon, and the Yukon’s strongest bridge.
Downtown Carcross Commons has turned into a community hub of artisan shops, but the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway and Matthew General Store — the oldest in the Yukon — are also ways to enjoy an afternoon here.
6. The Kluane National Park And Reserve Visitor Centre
No visit to the Yukon is complete without seeing Kluane National Park and Reserve . It’s home to the sprawling St. Elias Mountains , the largest non-polar icefield in the world, and Mount Logan — the highest peak in Canada.
Learn about the park and its geology, but also its First Nations People, at the park’s two visitor centers. The Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre is located in the Da Kų Cultural Centre in Haines Junction. It has an impressive collection of audio recordings of traditional stories told by First Nation elders.
The Thechàl Dhâl’ Visitor Centre , located an hour north of Haines Junction, was developed in close collaboration with local First Nations and includes exhibits on the people who learned to live on this sometimes-harsh yet beautiful land. The exhibits also show off original beadwork created by the artisans of the Kluane.
Pro Tip: The only way to see the vast icefields and Mount Logan is by air, and the park offers several flightseeing tours, like Rocking Star Adventures .
7. Support Indigenous Artists
Exquisite beadwork, handcrafted leather goods, thoughtful paintings, astonishing carvings, and more by Indigenous artists can be enjoyed and found throughout the Yukon. In Whitehorse, you can browse and purchase these First Nations art pieces at numerous stores.
North End Gallery , for instance, carries and showcases Indigenous arts and crafts, but also other artwork unique to the Yukon.
The Northern Cultural Expressions Society Carving Studio and Gallery has items ranging from crafted jewelry and beaded moccasins to magnets, t-shirts, and prints. In Carcross, stop by the Carcross/Tagish First Nation Carving Centre to watch traditional carvers at work.
Pro Tip: Indigenous Yukon has a long list of various places to purchase art and crafts that support Indigenous artists.

The sad, stale state of in-flight vegetarian meals
Who ordered the limp cucumber sandwich.
Last month, a traveler posted a photo to Reddit of his girlfriend’s vegetarian meal for a 12-hour flight. It wasn’t pretty.
The sandwich featured two grim cucumber slices and wan tomatoes. On the top half of the dry roll, faint oval imprints of the filling resembled cupping therapy marks. If the flight attendants had tried to revive the meal, they failed.
As a vegan, I could relate. For travelers who don’t eat animal products, the special meal delivered to our seat is often a mystery: What will the ingredients be? How was it prepared? Will it be halfway palatable?
We know the usual suspects all too well, tomato-soupy ratatouille, salty rice the color of pale sunshine or an anemic salad. We squirrel away extra packets of Biscoff not because we are members of the cookie’s fan club; we’re just trying to survive the flight.
The pitiful cuke is the latest publicly shared slight to vegetarian and vegan travelers seeking sustenance on airplanes. In 2023, a Japan Airlines passenger received a solitary banana with chopsticks for his vegan business-class breakfast. In March, Donna Zeigfinger, founder of Green Earth Travel , ordered a quinoa plate on a United flight. The travel adviser’s plant-based meal came with a side of chicken strips.
“They’re not quite getting it,” said Zeigfinger, a longtime vegan. “They’re still not understanding.”

Airlines are constantly investing in meal service , especially in the higher ticket categories. American Airlines recently unveiled its reimagined menu, which included such meat-free dishes as truffle ricotta ravioli and vegetable and garbanzo bean tagine with couscous. Yet, veg travelers are discovering a disconnect between what’s on the menu and what lands with a thud — or whimper — on their tray table.
“One word — disgusting,” said Nikki Dewan, a Vegetarian Society member who participated in a recent Facebook survey about airplane food . “Airlines don’t make an effort to bring good, delicious and wholesome food for the airline customers.”
In a Gallup poll conducted in July, 4 percent of Americans said they were vegetarians. So, why aren’t airlines doing better? And can they please cheer up that sad cucumber with a little dressing?
Missing meals force airlines to improvise
In general, a catering company or in-house culinary team plans the in-flight menus and prepares thousands of meals and snacks in an industrial kitchen on the airport grounds. The airlines assume that all of the passengers will eat the standard meals unless they are otherwise informed.
No different from a restaurant or wedding reception, it is the diner’s responsibility to inform the host (in this case, the airline) of dietary restrictions or meal preferences. Most carriers require passengers to submit their meal choices at least 24 to 48 hours before departure, so the chefs can fill the special orders. If you wait until you’re on the plane to share your requirements, you could end up with an improvised meal conjured in the galley.
“I was always amazed by the time it takes to put together a special meal, which is actually not that easy,” said Daniel Klein, executive chef for research and development at LSG Group, one of the world’s largest airline catering firms. “That’s why I can sometimes see why you might just get a banana, because it’s a last-minute request.”
However, reserving a meal is no guarantee that you will receive it. The flight attendant might not deliver the dish to its rightful owner because of a technical glitch, human error or passenger interference.
“It’s not just the quality of the food or the availability. It’s actually the service,” said Deirdra Barr, director of communications for the U.K.-based Vegetarian Society. “So many people’s vegetarian or vegan meals go missing or someone else gets them, and that means they’re left with nothing.”
Grace Philips, a Vegetarian Society member, knew exactly what happened to her veg meal on a recent flight: Another passenger didn’t “fancy the meat option” and asked for the vegetarian option instead. When the flight attendant reached her seat, all of the veg meals were gone. “I was hungry,” she shared on the group’s Facebook page.
In these instances, the flight attendants will often assemble an improvised plate of food for the neglected passenger. They will forage in the galley or pinch items from their own mini-coolers.
On a flight from New York to Scotland, Elyse Mercedes King said a flight attendant donated her two apples. Vanessa Winsor once survived a long-haul trip with three segments of a satsuma mandarin, six grapes and a bread roll.
When Zeigfinger flew United from Washington Dulles to Berlin, her preordered vegan meal never materialized. The flight attendant tried to correct the injustice with a slapdash meal, plus 700 frequent-flier points.
“The flight attendant was really angry,” Zeigfinger said. “She acknowledged that this was a serious thing.”
The best and worst airlines for vegetarians and vegans
In the 1990s, many travelers who identified as carnivores on the ground became temporary vegetarians when flying. The meatless meal seemed like the tastier and less enigmatic option.
“People who weren’t vegetarian were ordering the vegetarian meal because it was so much better than the chicken or beef they would serve on the plane,” said James Doran, director of business development, tourism and hospitality practice at SIS International Research.
As airlines chase after loyalty members and elite travelers, they are paying more attention to overall meal service, including the previously maligned proteins. Some carriers have teamed up with celebrity chefs, such as Delta’s partnerships with Michelle Bernstein, Michael Chiarello and Linton Hopkins. Air France works with Michelin-starred French chefs and award-winning pastry chefs.
Charles Platkin, founder and executive director of the Center for Food as Medicine , described vegan and vegetarian meals as an “afterthought” in this profit-driven market. Even so, the major airlines are still providing special meals, including several that go beyond the traditional veg diet. The subcategories include Asian vegetarian, vegetarian lacto-ovo, fruit platter and Jain , a vegetarian diet that eschews root vegetables.
Travelers note that airlines that cater to populations inclined toward vegetarianism, for cultural or religious reasons, often excel in this department. Doran fondly recalled a vegetarian Malay meal on Malaysian Airlines and an Indian-style vegetarian dish on Emirates. However, this rule doesn’t always apply.
“Very surprisingly Air India is terrible on the occasions I’ve flown with them,” Teresa Dawkes shared on the Vegetarian Society’s Facebook page. “Pretty inedible and they didn’t have any gin.”
Ashley Isaacs Ganz, the vegetarian founder of the luxury tour operator Artisans of Leisure , said she wishes carriers based in countries with strong vegetarian traditions would better showcase their culinary heritage. For example, she suggested Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways incorporate Japanese temple cuisine into their menus.
“I always want to have the Japanese meal, but the different components of the meal are, for the most part, not vegetarian,” she said. “I would love for them to take it to the next level.”
In a Vegetarian Society Facebook post about airplane food, more airlines were panned than praised. Patricia Thompson called Irish carrier Aer Lingus “woeful” for serving dry veggie pasta for dinner and canapés with chicken bits that the flight attendants offered to pick off.
Not just pasta and salad anymore
To be fair, some airlines have been refining their palates.
Since 2009, Swiss has partnered with Hiltl , which claims to be the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant (it was founded in Zurich in 1898). The airline celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a three-course meal that included spicy beetroot tabbouleh, penne with vegetarian bolognaise or massaman curry for the main course, and a vegan mango mousse for dessert.
In November, Australian carrier Qantas launched new vegan menu items in all of its classes. Economy passengers can dine on lemon herb pearl couscous with roasted carrots, baby beans and toasted almonds. Higher classes can sample such dishes as pumpkin and ginger soup with sourdough croutons; stir-fried shiitake mushrooms with tofu, chrysanthemum greens and jasmine rice; or plant-based orecchiette with sautéed mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower cream and pangrattato.
For its latest vegan and vegetarian menus, Air New Zealand introduced such dishes as cannellini bean smash with pan-fried tofu spinach and jackfruit with coconut red curry and black mustard seed steamed rice.
Klein recently developed a Western-themed vegan menu for Korean Air. For first class, he created a trio of amuse-bouches, including an onion puree flavored with passion fruit; smashed Yukon potatoes with fresh truffles and a chestnut puree; and a risotto with roasted vegetables.
He said the biggest challenge in crafting innovative in-flight meals is not the altitude, which dulls the taste buds, but the cost of some products. He said alternative meats are too expensive to include on menus.
“They are still very pricey,” he said. “We’re not there yet, so we go with regular items, but we try to be creative.”
Platkin is not clamoring for fake proteins on flights. He advocates for clean, healthy ingredients, and said the airlines already rely too heavily on processed foods and easy carbs.
When asked to review new menu options on American Airlines, he said the dishes look tasty, but he was concerned about the heavy use of cheese and the fake meat.
As for the meal plan for international economy passengers, his critique was short and to the point: “It is all pasta.”
