Voyage to the Sunken City is NOW LIVE!
All aboard! Grab your snorkel and your flippers, Voyage to the Sunken City is now live worldwide with 135 new collectible cards, the new Naga minion type, new Colossal and Dredge keywords, sunken treasures, and more!
What’s Included: Naga
The vengeful Naga are Hearthstone’s newest minion type. Naga are drawn to magic and tend to have stronger effects if you cast spells while they watch from your hand.
What’s Included: Colossal Minions
Colossal minions are so big, they don’t fit on one card! Minions with the Colossal keyword come with additional appendages that synergize with the minion’s main body. Those appendages are part of the Colossal minion, so they are summoned whenever the main body is summoned, even if it was not played from hand. Each class has its own Legendary Colossal Minion in Voyage to the Sunken City .
What’s Included: Dredge and Sunken Treasures
Dredge is a new keyword that lets you look at the bottom cards of your deck and choose one to bubble up to the top. Azsharan cards are cards that put a more powerful “Sunken” copy of themselves on the bottom of your deck. Use Dredge to find that pivotal removal spell, that key combo piece, or your powerful Sunken treasures!
The launch of Voyage to the Sunken City kicks off Hearthstone’s new year: the Year of the Hydra! Check out the 23.0 Patch Notes and the Year of the Hydra Announcement for more details on the current patch and a look at the year to come.

Description [ ]
Nazjatar is a dangerous and beautiful place, filled with coral forests and unfathomable deep-sea creatures skittering through passageways and clinging to rockfaces. Secrets that have remained submerged for millennia are now exposed to the surface world, including the ancient ruins of Zin-Azshari , the once-glorious capital of the kaldorei . Further in the depths, the beautiful and terrible city of the naga — and the palace of the Queen of Tides herself — awaits.

Ruins of Zin-Azshari .
The naga of Nazjatar are masters of sorcery and natural dwellers of the ocean deeps. The naga reinforcements sent to Azuremyst Isle for Warlord Sriss'tiz came directly from Nazjatar.
While the Alliance struck a decisive blow to the Horde in the Battle of Dazar'alor , it was not without some casualties. With both sides reeling from the events and healing their wounds, the naga made their move and begin striking against the two. Taking any remaining ships, the Horde and the Alliance set sail and arrive in the ancient land of Nazjatar: the land of the naga and the location of Azshara's seat of power, her Eternal Palace , where they will face Queen Azshara herself.

Hearthstone: Voyage to the Sunken City card list
We're keeping up with every card revealed for the Hearthstone: Voyage to the Sunken City expansion. Here's the full and complete list.
Hearthstone: Voyage to the Sunken City is set to launch in April. The game's latest expansion will add 135 new cards to the existing game, which will include new game mechanics and new ways to shake up the current meta. On top of that, it will also mark the start of the new Hearthstone Standard year, in which the 2020 expansions will rotate out of Standard play.
Shacknews has followed all of the major reveals and we have compiled an updated list of Voyage to the Sunken City's cards.
New keyword: Dredge
Minions and spells with the Dredge keyword will allow players to Discover from the bottom three cards of their deck. That card is then moved to the top of the player's deck. Similarly, some new cards will have "Sunken" effects that drop a treasure on the bottom of the player's deck.
New keyword: Colossal
Minions with Colossal have additional appendages that act as totally separate minions. The body and the appendages will have their own separate effects. When a Colossal body is played, all appendages are summoned automatically.
New minion type: Naga
The Naga will often utilize different effects that relate to spells, whether it's using spells while a Naga is in hand, using spells while a Naga is in play, or other conditions.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

The next Hearthstone expansion takes players to the city of Zin-Azshari, the home city of the fearsome Naga and their corrupted Queen Azshara. Blizzard announced the expansion Voyage to the Sunken City and its planned global launch date of April 12 with a short animated trailer released on Thursday.
The trailer shows a small ship making its way through the depths of the ocean, crewed by a Mechagnome, Nightborne, and murloc. This hardy crew make their way through the mysterious terrain at the bottom of the sea, before eventually finding the lost city of Zin-Azshari. There, they are attacked by Naga, and we get an idea of the sort of cards we can likely expect to see — Naga, pirates, murlocks, and other nautical sorts.
It’s a genuinely lovely trailer; Hearthstone ’s announcements are often loud and silly, rolling information out through musical trailers . It’s a game where one of the most prestigious lore characters, Medivh, is portrayed as a silly ham of a man who hosts lavish parties out of his wizard tower. The trailer for Journey to the Sunken City is a little more thoughtful, and has ethereal music slowly ascend into an absolute banger of a track.
World of Warcraft players visited Zin-Azshari during the Battle for Azeroth expansion , but Hearthstone ’s card art often allows for alternate, more detailed perspectives on familiar locations. A new minion keyword is Naga; these scaly creatures are powerful when combined with spellcasting. There’s a new spell mechanic called Dredge, which allows the player to see the bottom three cards of their deck and pick one to draw next, along with new cards with active effects to sink cards down to the bottom of your deck. Finally, Colossal minions are so large they summon appendages on the board for their limbs or tentacles, even if they were not played from hand.
Activision-Blizzard remains in turmoil after the developer was sued by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) following a two-year investigation . The suit alleges that Activision Blizzard allegedly fostered a “frat boy culture” that allowed for gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment. Microsoft purchased Activision-Blizzard in January for $68.7 billion ; the process of that acquisition remains under review by the FTC.

Description [ edit | edit source ]
Nazjatar is a dangerous and beautiful place, filled with coral forests and unfathomable deep-sea creatures skittering through passageways and clinging to rockfaces. Secrets that have remained submerged for millennia are now exposed to the surface world, including the ancient ruins of Zin-Azshari , the once-glorious capital of the kaldorei . Further in the depths, the beautiful and terrible city of the naga — and the palace of the Queen of Tides herself — awaits.
History and politics [ edit | edit source ]

History [ edit | edit source ]
On March 7th, 2022, Blizzard revealed several upcoming announcements for the Warcraft franchise, including Hearthstone's next expansion and Core set to be revealed on March 15th. [3] However, on the 14th it was announced that the Hearthstone announcement was being moved to March 17th instead. [4]
On March 16th, the official Hearthstone twitter posted a short video of the porthole of a submarine passing by various locations, with the accompanying text "It's almost time to set sail, adventurers!" [5] Shortly afterwards, information about the expansion was mistakenly uploaded to Google Play a day early, revealing the expansion's name and pre-order hero. [6]

Voyage to the Sunken City - Queen Azshara Returns in Hearthstone
The search for zin-azshari, colossal minions and dredge keyword, queen azshara and the naga - an addition long overdue, this voyage is an homage, comment by readiit.
No Kapp Nazjatar is one of the best designed zones in the game from an immersion/art standpoint.
Comment by Dexstar09
Nazjatar music is so beautiful especially when you go to the area where the Highborne ghosts wanders around.
Comment by Nymrohd
I love the idea of Colossals tied with Naz'jatar. I really wish Naz'jatar had more world bosses that looked like massive sea beasts because that fits the underwater fantasy as well as how Sassz'ine introduced us to a talented Sea Witch. Hope one of the other two expacs is Pandaria and brings the monk.
Comment by pawpurr
tbh I think they missed the boat not doing more of this in WoW, the underwater zones and queen azshara storyline are tight as $%^&. If BFA had her as the main villain instead of N'Zoth I don't think anyone would have been upset. Hearthstone always gets the real dev passion though :) :(
Comment by Dorkfishes
Sounds like a Blizzard employee wrote this, is this a wowhead article or a blue post?
Comment by Arakara
Ah so Hearthstone is the true Seat of Power Azshara was talking about, eh?
Comment by Illanyss
While following some links on this article I became aware of one thing about one of the whispers of Il'gynoth and the ones of N'zoth: The five keys to light their master's way, the five lights! They're not 5 of the same type of thing! We (the character/hero) are one of the keys, the dagger Xal'atath was in is another key, Odin (the lord of ravens) have or will have something that counts as a key and there should be two more keys. And, think, they might not be objects at all! They could be events! In fact, if the next WoW expansion is really Dragonflight, the Aspects will be trying to get something to get their power/immortality back and that is one of the keys as well! -gasps- THAT LEAVES ONLY ONE KEY UNIDENTIFIED!

We have the stone now and that was keeping the water at bay.

While World of Warcraft players look up to the skies in hopes of a Dragon-centric expansion Personally I am looking towards the veiled and forbidding seas, but I'm sure Blizzard will just throw a dart at a blank part of the map and go "HEY THE ISLANDS WERE HERE THE WHOLE TIME, NEAT HUH?" Instead of finally having us go to the seas where every single expedition has failed and none return. If all people in Azeroth flat out to refuse to go there, and those that do never come back, how can anyone claim nothing is there? The idea that it's an unexplored (successfully) part of the world full of danger just makes me think that there's a definite source for all that danger. One of these days they'll have to clear up what is beyond those two seas and actually put something there, and I'm afraid the gamestate will be too damaged for me to want to even see it by then.

I love that trailer, nice Daft Punk vibe, there.

In light of the ongoing global health risks associated with in-person gatherings, we’ve disabled the ability to create public events. We do, however, want individuals at home to have an opportunity to partake in the upcoming pre-release weekend, so we’ll be keeping private event functionality intact.
Private Fireside Gatherings will:
- Be eligible to receive Nemsy Necrofizzle if they fulfill all hosting prerequisites. This means having an established Tavern. Learn more about how to establish your Tavern here .
- Be eligible for the Fireside Gatherings card back.
- Allow event listing creation the same day as the event is meant to be hosted.
- Have the same Fireside Brawls as public Fireside Gatherings.
- Be visible on the website to only the innkeeper hosting it. The Fireside Gathering itself will be visible in the game client and participants will be able to search for and find it in the client as well.
Private Fireside Gatherings will NOT:
- Be visible on Tavern or upcoming event pages.
- Show up in the search function on the upcoming events page.
- Count towards any Tavern or Innkeeper progression. They will not count towards establishing your Tavern. You will still need to host public events in the future as part of establishing your Tavern.

Voyage to the Sunken City Hearthstone Decks – Best Early Meta Builds From Pros & Streamers, Decks For All Classes
This post will no longer be updated. If you want to check out the latest Voyage to the Sunken City decks, click here: Standard / Wild
Sunken City decks roundup features a long list of decks that have been played by Legendary players, pros, and streamers. You will be able to find decks for all 10 classes. We will be keeping this post updated throughout the beginning of the new expansion (roughly the first 5 days). We also generally have a compilation of best performing decks in a separate post roughly 24h after the expansion’s release, and the next one a few days later.
Voyage to the Sunken City is the first expansion of the Year of the Hydra (2022). Like every first expansion of the year, it should change the Standard landscape significantly. Not only we’re getting 135 new expansion cards, but also a massive rotation. All of the 2020 expansions (Ashes of Outland, Scholomance Academy and Darkmoon Faire) are out. On top of that, 57 Core Set cards have rotated out, with 72 cards from older sets taking their place. That’s a grand total of nearly 500 cards leaving Standard and 207 new ones coming in.
If you weren’t with us during the reveal season, you can learn more about the expansion and see all the new cards in our Voyage to the Sunken City expansion guide .
Voyage to the Sunken City Deck Lists
Once the expansion launches, we will be feverishly posting new decks for the first five or so days. During the first couple of days, we aren’t very picky – there are no deck statistics so early, so we can’t sift through the bad decks. Around Day 3-4, we start posting less, as meta forms, decks become more refined and it’s getting clear which builds are good and which aren’t.
If this isn’t your first expansion then this is obvious, but be very wary of decks early in the expansion. A deck can be popular one day and then turn out to be really bad. This has happened multiple times in the past, and most likely will happen to at least one or two decks this expansion too. If you are a budget player, we recommend holding off for at least a few days (and preferably until the first balance patch) before committing to crafting anything. Spending Dust on hyped Legendaries on Day 1 is a very common mistake, and can leave you without the means to craft the actual meta Legendaries after everything settles.

Was Token Demon Hunter removed from the list? Is that deck not performing well?
Kael’thas Druid in Wild is just lame. As soon as Kael’thas is played which can be on turn 3/4, you can insta forfeit. I guess Blizzard skipped quality assurance again.
Turn 2 dead. Wild is broken.
Quest pirate warrior is really strong.
Wouldn’t mind Bliz nerfing the auto buff on Abyssal Curse (“Each Curse is worse than the last.”)
Garotte’s Bleeds needed a ton of Spell Damage buffs (and considerable player skill) to pull off a mid-game OTK. Abyssal Curses do the buffs for you with no effort. Skip all the actual gameplay and watch the deck do the killing for you.
Scrapping auto-buffs on Abyssal Curse would feel right. Or even dropping it to ‘every OTHER Curse is worse.’ Still an annoyance but not an autopilot OTK.
Curse Warlock is utter garbage. It’s not getting nerfed. Learn to play.
Dredge is cool.
Having good luck with an abyssal curses deck at the mo like the prebuilt but with the minion that aoes based on hand size and a couple of the fatigue curse cards
Seems like quest pirate became even more deadly
Personally I hate building decks I find the whole process frustrating and time consuming and as I’m time poor, in other words a parent I appreciate other people putting stuff together, so it’s nice to have some decks to play with on release. If somehow blizzard could ban netdecking I definitely wouldn’t play.
It’s not like the meta is ever solved and I’m pretty sure I see someone on this site promoting anti meta decks all the time so there’s still room for new decks and experimentation well into a season let alone the start where there’s lots to explore. Also you don’t have to look at the decks other people play.
I kinda hate how they release all the card for streamers first, so almost every deck is tried out before normal people even get the chance to play the new set

Murloc Warlock Deck - Voyage to the Sunken City
This guide contains detailed Strategy, Mulligan, and deck-building information to help you play Murloc Warlock in The Voyage to the Sunken City expansion meta .
Murloc Warlock is an aggressive tribal deck that utilises Murloc synergies to dominate the board. While Murlocs individually are quite weak, when played together, they allow the deck to snowball out of control quickly, often catching opponents off-guard for swift victories.
Import This Deck in Hearthstone
Murloc warlock deck mulligan guide.
In your mulligan you should look for a strong early-game opener as Murloc Warlock is at its strongest at low Mana costs, becoming less effective as the game goes longer.
- General Mulligan (keep regardless of what your opponent is playing) — Rock Bottom , Chum Bucket , Azsharan Scavenger , and Voidgill .
- Mulligan against Aggro (also keep if you think you are playing against an aggressive deck) — Twin-fin Fin Twin .
- Mulligan against Control (also keep if you think you are playing against a slow deck) — No further cards required.
Murloc Warlock Deck Strategy
Unlike more traditional Murloc decks, this modern iteration of Murloc Warlock aims for a more passive early game to give itself long-term benefits. Ideally you should open up with Rock Bottom followed by Chum Bucket in order to give a significant buff to any Murlocs in your hand. If this is not possible, making use of Voidgill is also a strong alternative.
Once you have given some buffs to your Murlocs in-hand, you can begin populating the board with your cheaper Murlocs to generate some pressure. If your opponent has developed their own board, you can make use of Twin-fin Fin Twin and Lushwater Scout to help Rush in and clean up the board.
If you your initial push has not dealt critical damage, you can begin making use of resource-efficient Murlocs like Bloodscent Vilefin , Amalgam of the Deep , and Gorloc Ravager to ensure you do not run out of resources, whilst also keeping up the aggression. Continuing in this manner, making use of any further handbuffs from Chum Bucket and Voidgill , should provide you with a constant stream of aggression that will eventually become too much for your opponent to handle, allowing you to close out the game.
Against Aggro , making full use of Rush minions is essential in order to make sure you do not fall behind on the board. Due to the snowballing nature of Murlocs, trading with enemy minions to protect your Murlocs is very beneficial, as you will almost be able to finish off your opponent in a single turn once your board has grown large enough.
Against Control , you should plan your turns with a longer game in mind. This can often involve using Life Tap on Turn 2 in order to get a larger benefit from your Chum Bucket s and Voidgill s in addition to finding time to draw additional cards with Gorloc Ravager to help fight your opponent's board clears.
Murloc Warlock Deck Card Swaps
1x Murloc Tinyfin can be used in place of 1x Redgill Razorjaw based on personal preference.

WNC History: Steamboat Mountain Lily cruised the French Broad River 1881-85
Six weeks after the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, a writer for The Asheville Daily Citizen’s evening edition reported on Asheville’s plan to protect the city from Spanish troops as the United States prepared to enter what would become the 1898 Spanish-American War. The unnamed journalist wrote that well-known local banker “Captain” James P. Sawyer was getting ready “to take command of the armored cruiser Mountain Lily to guard the city from invasion by water.”
Were readers flummoxed by this declaration? Where was the city keeping a warship? And what nearby water route would be suitable for military campaigns?
As it happened, more than two decades earlier, back in 1876, U.S. Congressman Robert Brank Vance from Buncombe County had succeeded in convincing the Rivers and Harbors Congressional committee to foot the bill to create a “navigable” French Broad River, mitigate flooding, and drain swampland. The committee eventually appropriated $44,000 toward the effort and agreed that the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers would “clean out the channel.”
(The bill did have its critics. Ohio Sen. Allen G. Thurman remarked that “a catfish would never be able to navigate such a turbulent mountain stream.”)
Once the work on the French Broad – dredging the river bed, blasting rocks, removing reefs and shoals, and constructing jetties – was complete, Congressman Vance’s cousin, Col. Sidney Vance Pickens, along with James P. Sawyer, incorporated the French Broad Steamship Company to operate on the river, and soon the Mountain Lily was cruising its waters.
Building the Mountain Lily
The Mountain Lily was originally built in 1881 with the intention that it would provide transportation for both people and freight through parts of North Carolina’s mountainous region that were still cut off from rail corridors. To finance the venture, Pickens organized a swanky steamboat benefit and posted flyers reading, “Come one, Come all! All day picnic and barbeque at Horse Shoe, Henderson County! Everybody invited, Men, Women, and Children.” He sold all 160 shares of his new company during the event.
Now flush with cash, in April 1881, Pickens traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, to commission John L. Porter, builder of the Confederacy’s ironclad Virginia, to construct a steamboat that could successfully negotiate the newly-navigable French Broad River between Hendersonville and Brevard. Porter agreed. Pickens purchased the steamer’s machinery and had it transported to Hendersonville, where Porter would manage the boat’s construction on the banks of the French Broad.
Pickens planned for the Mountain Lily to embark on its maiden voyage within three months of hiring Porter. He envisioned a venture so lucrative that new stagecoach routes would run to carry passengers from his boat landings to railroad depots.
There were skeptics. On August 5, The Charlotte Democrat editorialized that the Mountain Lily would be a great success “until it meets with a few sunken logs.”
Pickens' critics might have been proved wrong if only the river’s water level that year had not been the lowest it had been in 25 years. The 90-foot long steamer needed only 18 inches of water to run when fully loaded. Paddlewheels on each of Mountain Lily’s sides could work together or individually so that the boat could handle the river’s twists and turns.
The maiden voyage
The Mountain Lily embarked on its maiden voyage departing from Hendersonville with a full load of 100 passengers. James T. Fain Jr., in "Henderson County," described the departure. “The beautiful gleaming white boat with green trim slid into the water with champagne dripping from the prow. The band struck up a lively tune, the two 12 horsepower motors built up steam, the people streamed across the gangplank, and Captain R.W. Davis, with a mighty ringing of the bell, got the Mountain Lily under way.”
Reviews were mixed at best. The newspaper out of Brevard reported, “Late in the afternoon the whistle of the boat was heard, and the younger ones ran down the bank to get the first glimpse. With much hauling of ropes and assistance from people on the banks, it managed someway to get up the river.” But the ship never arrived in Brevard that day. The bridges from Hendersonville had not been raised.
For some, the Mountain Lily quickly became a punchline. The August 23 edition of the Greenville News reported, “Capt. M. Revels, of the steam tug ‘Wade Hampton’ -- the glory and strength of Charleston harbor … is in a hilarious state over the ‘Mountain Lily.’ ... Being accustomed to water of unlimited depth and expanse he is considerably amused at the dimensions of the sheet on which the Lily proposes to navigate, and of the craft herself he finds it difficult to speak without spasms.”
The article continued, Revels “thinks the crew who wade behind to push her up will have a hard time because of the circumstance that she can only get under the bridges by diving and coming up on the other side. The main objections to her, however, are that she won’t run by herself, won’t steer, and will carry very little. Capt. Revels says when he navigates the French Broad he will do so on the hurricane deck of a low pressure, side-wheel mule.”
But even after a number of papers reprinted Revels derisive comments, Col. Pickens was not to be deterred. He invited a reporter, Col. Farrow with the Spartanburg Herald, for a ride on the Mountain Lily, so that he could write a glowing endorsement of steaming through the “Land of the Sky.”
Farrow wrote of the Aug. 31 excursion, “We drove out to the landing, six miles from Hendersonville, on last Friday morning, where we found quite a number of ladies and gentlemen assembled for an excursion on the boat. Promptly at the appointed hour the excursionists were all aboard, and we were all steaming away down the French Broad on a real steamboat, all parties enjoying the novelty of the expedition very much indeed.”
Farrow continued, “As soon as the river rises to its usual height it will commence regular trips over its whole line, which is over 2,200 feet about the level of the sea and the highest boat line in the world. ... Too much praise can not be given to Col. Pickens, the President of the Company, who, amid jeers and sneers, has pursued the even tenor of his way, and has proved the practicability of the enterprise by putting it into successful execution ... by blasting out a few shoals, it can be run as far as Asheville, for which we hope Congress next session will make an appropriation.” A number of area newspapers reprinted Farrow’s glowing review, and the Mountain Lily continued to occasionally operate for short trips and parties.
By October, despite “mountaineers visit(ing) this little boat by scores and gaz(ing) upon it as the greatest wonderful of the age,” as noted by a writer for the Yorkville Enquirer, he and other visitors “were somewhat disappointed in the French Broad.” Farrow offered an explanation, writing “in our imagination we had pictured a broad, majestic stream, while to the contrary, it is narrow, crooked and rugged, though picturesque. Congress will have to appropriate many thousands more before the French Broad can be made sufficiently navigable to promote the commercial interests of the section through which it runs.”
The steamer took 12 hours to make a trip of 15 miles against the current to Brevard. The French Broad Steamboat Company decided that the problem was that the Mountain Lilly had “not power enough.” Two larger engines were planned.
A failed venture
Secondary sources disagree on how long the Mountain Lily lasted on the French Broad. Some asserted that it failed on its maiden voyage and others that it made trips until 1885. A brief note in the February 2, 1882 edition of the Yorkville Enquirer noted that the steamer was sold at Hendersonville “under confession of judgment for $1250.”
What all agreed upon was that the Mountain Lily could not navigate the river without the aid of ropes, mules, or manpower and was never profitable. At some point, likely in 1885, the ship ran aground about 6 miles from Hendersonville at King’s Bridge when heavy rains flooded the river with mud. Eventually, the ship was dismantled. Some of the salvaged wood was used in the construction of Horse Shoe Baptist Church; the steam engines were sold to sawmills; and the Mountain Lily’s skeleton stayed partially submerged in the river for decades.
Over the years, numerous people tried to reintroduce steam service to the French Broad River. Two brothers from Brevard tried the venture with a smaller ship, but it could not carry enough freight to turn a profit. In 1887, a New York capitalist, G.C. Scofield set out to build another steamer to take tourists between Brevard and Asheville; Scofield engaged engineers to survey the river, proposing to navigate the shoals with a system of locks. This effort appears to have ended before service even began. A 1907 attempt at running a steamboat to Brevard required that passengers “be transferred around the shoals, a distance of a few hundred feet, and re-embark on the boat now running.” By the end of that year, the ship’s owners–Sophy Harrison Eastman and Col. V.E. McBee–were in court; Eastman accusing McBee of fraud and McBee charging Eastman with abuse.
Certainly the most ill-advised attempt at resurrection would have been the city’s decision to put the Mountain Lily into commission as a warship. On March 31 and then again on April 1, 1898, the Asheville papers reported, “the vessel has been undergoing repairs in the shipyards at Brevard, where a force of three men has been at work night and day to get her ready for business. The Lily will be convoyed by a long-legged mule.” This, of course, turned out to be merely an April Fool’s Day joke.
The Mountain Lily’s legacy
The French Broad in this part of the mountains was not to be tamed. In 1929, county commissioners appealed to the federal government to dredge the river and remove the jetties, which were obstructing flow and making the river banks swampy, but the funds never materialized. Then, when the Tennessee Valley Authority attempted to build 14 dams on portions of the Upper French Broad River in the 1960s and 1970s, critics of the plan cited the failed federal efforts of the 1870s and 1880s. The TVA eventually withdrew its plans.
Over the years the story of the Mountain Lily has remained a topic of discussion, delight, and derision. Its story has been revisited by well-known historians and writers including Wilma Dykeman, Sadie Smathers Patton, George W. McCoy, Bob Terrell, and John Parris, among many others.
In the 1970s, novelist and poet Robert Morgan described the “swaybacked and listing” Mountain Lily stuck in the mud in his poem “Real and Ethereal” as: “not so much a floating palace / as a tenement or bunkhouse / on a barge.” On his 1985 album, Reel & Rock, Grammy-award winning musician and storyteller David Holt included the steamer in an original song, “Goodbye, Goodbye.”
And, local historian Sarah Upchurch wrote a musical comedy in the 1980s entitled, “The Ballad of the Mountain Lily,” which was subsequently performed at Asheville’s Recreation Park during French Broad River Week. The cast ended the production with the lyric, “Perhaps it’s not silly, To call me a Lily, ‘Cause planted in sand I now lie.”
These days the largest vessel navigating the French Broad from Brevard to Asheville is a 15-foot inflatable raft. In 1987, the river was designated a North Carolina State Trail, and, in 2012, two Western North Carolina-based environmental nonprofits, MountainTrue and RiverLink, launched the French Broad Paddle Trail, a “140-mile recreational watercraft trail” running from Rosman into Tennessee to protect the river while also promoting low-impact recreational access.
