A Guide to Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

This is a guide to visiting the wineries in Haro, Spain, where we will introduce you to the wine capital of the La Rioja region. Here vineyards can be seen throughout the Ebro Valley, all laid out perfectly in their long rows of green vines.

The town of Haro has become the epicentre of wine, wineries and gastronomy. Haro in Spain has become a very popular weekend getaway, or a wine pilgrimage for visitors, because it is all about the wine of the La Rioja region.

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

Everything in Haro is about the wines, from the street art to the sculptures, the wine museum, to the food, and of course to the many wineries in Haro (pronounced ‘aro’).

Wine is a primary industry in Spain, and one they are very justifiably proud of. We can attest to the fact that the wine is very good. We had no issue doing this research for you.

How to Get to Haro, Spain

Getting to Haro is easy. Renting a car is the best way to get to Haro, and the roads are good (don’t worry, you don’t need to drive to the wineries, as I will explain). Bilbao Airport is 60 minutes from Haro, and Madrid is a comfortable 4 hours away. You can read more about visiting Madrid here.

How to get around Haro, and more importantly to the wineries of Haro.

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

There are over 500 wineries in Haro and La Rioja, but many of them are in the township of Haro itself, and many of the very popular wineries are on your doorstep.

Staying in the centre of the town is a very strategic move for visiting the wineries of Haro, Spain. We will recommend some hotels later in this article.

Tips for visiting the wineries in Haro, Spain

Wineries are called bodegas in Spain, and you will see this all over Haro, La Rioja and Spain.

Our tips for visiting wineries in Haro, Spain is to walk to them.

We thought that we may need to take a formalised tour to explore the wineries, but as the majority are a very short stroll across the River Tirón Footbridge, so there is no need for a designated driver so to speak.

You can very easily walk to many of the wineries like Muga, CVNE, Bodegas La Rioja Alta, Bodegas López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, and Bodegas Bilbainas and more.

Do I need to book to visit the wineries in Haro, Spain?

Our hotel told us we would need to ring or email to visit the wineries. When we were walking the first afternoon, we crossed the bridge and saw that the CVNE winery/bodega was open. We went in to book, and the lady asked whether we wanted a tour of the facilities, or to just sample the wines. We replied that we just wanted to sample their wines, and that was it. She welcomed us, and we stayed and sampled some amazing wines of the CVNE, and learned a lot just talking with her.

If you want to tour the wineries in Haro, Spain

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

If you want to take a tour of the winery facilities then yes, you need to ring or email the winery to book a time. The people speak very good English at the bodegas/wineries, so they will understand you.

However, if you just want to just sample the wines of Haro, Spain, then just walk in off the streets.

Sampling wines in Haro, Spain

This is a little different to the wineries in Australia , where you can sample every wine from the cellar for free, albeit small tastings. Read about our latest winery tasting in Western Australia, and it was good.

Here in Haro, Spain you pay per tasting, and yes, they are a much more generous tastings than we get in Australia. Generally, you will pay per the quality of the wine. The quaffing wines were about 1.50 euro, while the top shelf premium wines were about 4 euro. A flight of 5 different wines at Muga, was 4.50 euro. Cheaper than some of the restaurants actually.

You will find that even though you might not have done a wine tour, the cellar masters are very happy to share their viticultural knowledge with you. It hardly seems worthwhile booking a tour of the facilities in this case.

However, if you have not been to a winery and explored behind the scenes, or really want to know more about the production of wines in La Rioja, then you should do at least one tour.

Another tip about visiting the bodegas of Haro.

You will be surprised but you really only need to try and do two or three wineries a day. Because they are so interesting, and their tastings so generous, you would be hard pressed to do more.

About El vino de Haro – The wines of Haro

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

La Rioja produces 90% of red wine and produces the most red wine in all of Spain. The other 10% is white wine and rosé, and I can vouch that the white wines are excellent, as Gordon can vouch for the reds. Visiting Haro in Spain is a very good idea if you like vino.

A little history of wine growing in Haro, Spain

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

It was the Romans who introduced vine cultivation, but it was in the 19th century when the wine industry of La Rioja and Haro really started and one that would see them recognised in 1925 as one of only two Designations of Origin in Spain.

This means that the wines meet certain standards of authenticity and are approved by the industry and by the European Union. Rioja is the most famous out of all the DOs   ( designations of origin ) in Spain, and one of the two DOCa in the country, the other being DOCa Priorat.

It is all to do with the perfect alignment of the climate, soil, and the varieties of autochthonous grapes, or indigenous grapes which grow well in the Haro area of La Rioja, Spain.

People told us that the winery tour was outstanding, taking you into the cellars and explaining the production of wine in La Rioja. Email them in advance to schedule the tour.

We were there later in the day and just did the tastings, which we thoroughly enjoyed, purchasing a few wines also.

Bodegas Muga

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

Bodegas Muga is located in the historical Barrio de La Estación in Haro. The bodega is two centuries old, built mainly of stone and oak, yet it is also very contemporary. The old and the new marry harmoniously.

This is where you can sample a flight of their top 5 wines. The wines were laid out on coasters that gave all the details of each wine, though the cellarmaster explained more as we tried each one. This was a very pleasant experience.

Bodegas Rioja Santiago

Bodegas Rioja Santiago is the second oldest winery in La Rioja, in Haro.

It is one of only three wineries in the world that, due to its age, who are permitted to use the word ‘Rioja’ on the label. Nowadays Rioja Santiago is a modern winery, but the philosophy that surrounded the wines for more than 100 years has not changed: ‘producing the highest quality Rioja wines’.

You cannot miss the oven roasted leg of lamb, which is the signature dish of Terete Restaurant in Haro. You can watch the chef cook these in the oven at the front of the restaurant

The waitstaff bring the clay dishes to the table and pull the tender meat apart in front of you. Match this with a La Rioja wine, and you will be in for a very good time. Great friendly service also.

There can be a long wait to get into this very popular restaurant close to the main plaza, Plaza de la Cruz. We got lucky and walked in.

Located in the main plaza it is always a worry to go the cafe, as you immediately think tourist trap. This was a convenient café to have breakfast and wait for the locals to wake up, which is generally around 10am. Sit outside and watch the world go by, and enjoy a bocadillo with jamon, fresh orange juice and coffee, which will cost you some loose change.

Best Kebab in Haro, Spain

I know, I know – why would you have a kebab when you are in Spain? However, after a long day at the bodegas all we really wanted was a takeaway kebab (to have with our wine purchases), and we got an excellent one at Bar Estambul Kebab y Pizzeria up the road from the main plaza. #yourwelcome

Haro Wine Festival

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

Think Songkran in Thailand, but rather than water, you fight with wine …. And red wine at that. The Haro Wine Festival is held on the 29th June, which is San Pedro day. The highlight of this festival is the Batalla de Vino, the Battle of Wine.

It starts at 7.00 a.m. with a procession of locals all wearing white and red scarves. Everyone carries jugs full of red wine… ‘cause they are going to throw them at you, after a sip of more. The procession is led by the town’s mayor riding a horse.

Everyone walks or makes their way by any means to the top of the Cliffs of Bilibio, and a mass is celebrated. After the mass the Batalla de Vino commences. The aim is to be covered from head to toe in red wine. The people wander down to the Plaza de la Paz at midday and it continues.

Other things to do in Haro, Spain

When you are not visiting the bodegas of Haro or eating in Haro there are other things to do.

They like festivals in this little city, and while we were there we were woken by bands walking up and down the streets. This was a celebration for the Day of La Rioja .

Visiting the Wineries in Haro, Spain

The Day of La Rioja (Día de La Rioja) is an annual public holiday in the Spanish autonomous community of La Rioja, celebrated on June 9. It marks the anniversary of when the autonomous community of La Rioja’s statute was approved on June 9, 1982.

They started at 7am and finished after the fireworks at midnight, and it was fun. The people of La Rioja and Haro do know how to celebrate.

–     Take a photograph of Palacio de Tejada, the coat of arms on the third floor dates from 1733. It then became a Post and Telegraph Office. Well worth seeing for the baroque, neoclassical and French Rococo architecture. Located at Calle Laín Calvo, 16

–     Find the HARO sign that overlooks the vineyards. Sort of like the HOLLYWOOD sign.

Tips for Visiting Wineries in Haro Spain

The Rioja wine region in Spain is one of our favorite wine growing regions in the world. The center of the wine region in La Rioja is the town of Haro, where you’ll find some of the oldest and largest wineries in the area.

It’s a must-visit spot for wine lovers visiting Spain. While there are hundreds of wineries in Haro Spain to visit as well as throughout the Rioja wine region , there are at least a dozen in Haro alone that are, in my opinion, not to be missed if you want to get an educated overview of Rioja wine and taste some of the finest vintages around.

wineries in Haro Spain

In order to make your wine tasting trip to Haro the best it can be, you’ll need to know a few important things about the area and the way they conduct wine tasting. You’ll find all that information, and more, below in our guide to Haro wine tasting.

At first it might not seem very easy to plan a wine tasting trip in Haro on your own, because you’ll need to contact the various wineries for appointments, but don’t let that discourage you.

It’s actually quite easy to make those wine tasting appointments and the rest of the planning is a breeze.

How to Plan a Wine Tasting Trip in Haro Spain

You don’t need to book a guided tour of the wineries in Haro, because it’s incredibly easy to do it yourself. Many of the wineries to visit are within walking distance of each other and they each offer their own guided tours with experts to tell you about their wine production.

It’s best to base yourself right in the center of Haro and plan your wine tasting from there. If you’d like to branch out from Haro, it’s easy to rent a car and drive around the surrounding area, or set up a broader Rioja wine trip with a tour company.

BOOK A TOUR

If you don’t want to plan out your own wine tasting tour or drive around the area yourself, leave it up to the pros and book a group or private tour.

  • Small group wine tour to 3 boutique wineries with lunch and a stroll through Laguardia.
  • Staying in San Sebastian? Book this full-day wine tour with transportation and lunch from San Sebastian.

If you’re hitting up Italy as part of a larger trip to Europe, be sure to check out our 2-week Europe Itinerary .

How to Get to Haro, Spain

Getting to Haro is also fairly easy. Renting a car is the fastest and most convenient mode of transportation for this area. Driving is really easy and the roads are great, and well marked!

The nearest major airport is in Bilbao, about an hour drive from Haro. There are buses you can take from the airport to Haro. You can drive from Madrid in about 4 hours.

Other options to get to Haro include the high-speed RENFE train or the bus from various points around Spain . Find more details about the train and bus options on the Haro Tourism site.

Within Haro, you don’t really need a mode of transportation. You can walk from the town center to where the wineries are within about 1/2 mile and you can walk between wineries easily – many of them are on the same street.

How to Book Wine Tasting Appointments

It might seem like a lot of work to contact each of these wineries and set up appointments, but it can be pretty easy through email. Another way to go about this would be to first book your hotel and ask the concierge to book the appointments for you.

This is obviously the easiest way, but not all hotels offer this service. To make the appointments yourself, send an email to the wineries you wish to visit at least a week in advance of your trip (even earlier, if you can).

You’ll find the email addresses you’ll need in the descriptions below. During busy times, they may not get back to you right away, and the tours can get filled up quickly (especially ones in English), so it’s best to do this as far in advance as possible.

If no one is getting back to you, send another email, call, or see if they have an online form you can fill out. Online forms were not as successful for me. If you submit an online form and don’t hear back right away, send an email instead.

English tours are given less often than Spanish tours, so you’ll have to be flexible and able to take whatever appointment you can get. Some of the wineries also have a tasting bar so you can just walk right in and have a tasting, without scheduling or taking a tour.

Top Haro Wineries to Visit

There are quite a few wineries in Haro that you can visit. Some are historic. Taking a tour of these older wineries is a highlight of visiting the wineries of Haro.

The cellars are built underground and use the natural humidity to support and protect the wine. It’s an incredible thing to see. Here are our top choices for wineries to visit.

If you’re walking or driving, CVNE is a great place to start. There is a public parking lot directly across from the entrance of the winery, and from there you can walk to the other wineries listed here (in the order given).

CVNE's underground cellar

Bodega CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) has been around since 1879. It was started by two brothers who were pioneers in the wine industry.

The company has continued to grow and expand, adding additional space and labels to the empire. A winery visit at CVNE, located right in the center of the Barrio de la Estacion, where many of the major wineries in Haro can be found, includes a walk through the facilities and a peek at the cellar building that was designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Deep within the cellar you’ll witness the white mold growing all around the stacked bottles aging peacefully. It’s really a sight to see. The tour and tasting is €15 per person.

If you don’t wish to take a tour, you can walk right into the tasting room at CVNE and try a few of their wines, which range in price from €1-5 for a tasting. They have a few different labels to try.

You can also schedule a winery lunch or take one of their tasting courses (wine and chocolate anyone?)

Address:  Barrio de la Estación, s/n, 26200 Haro, La Rioja, Spain Phone:  +34 941 30 48 09 Email: [email protected]

muga wine tasting

Muga was founded in 1932 and you can expect to find some very nice wines here. The tasting room is very modern and inviting, with a cool train outside!

Tours takes place Monday to Saturday and cost 15€. The visit includes a trip through the winery and tasting of 2 wines. It lasts around 60 to 90 minutes. Make an appointment in advance on their online form. If you don’t wish to take a tour, you can walk in at any time and have a tasting at the bar.

There are a few choices of flights, and the tasting prices are very reasonable.

Ever wanted to take a hot-air balloon ride? Muga offers it as one of their activities! I think a balloon ride over the vineyards in the fall would be one of the most beautiful ways to see the vineyards at their peek. They also offer full-day wine tasting courses .

⇒ Gomez Cruzado

A tasting at Gomez Cruzado

This winery was founded in 1886 and has been run by a few different people along the way. The current owners have been the driving force that ushered Gomez Cruzado into the spotlight.

The winery is housed in the original structure in the Barrio de la Estacion, and while it’s one of the smallest, it has a lot of personality to make up for it. You can walk in for a wine tasting (no reservation needed) any day of the week and ask for a tasting flight, which includes five wines for 18€.

You can also taste on a per-glass basis. They have a guided tour and tasting for 25€ that includes wines of the Gómez Cruzado’s central family of fine wines and the Terroir Selection village wines, accompanied by an appetizer and olive oil.

There’s also a premium tasting for 50€ that includes the exclusive wines from the winery and charcuterie. You must book in advance.

⇒ Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia

Lopez de Heredia and Vina Tondonia

The history of R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia can be traced all the way back to 1877 when the founder came to La Rioja looking to start up his winery business and grow grapes.

He planted the vineyards and followed it up with the establishment of the winery, the first in Haro, shortly after. It remains a family-owned winery to this day. A visit to Viña Tondonia is an absolute must when in Haro.

If you only want to do one full tour in Haro, this is the one to choose. They are open for visits from Monday to Saturday (except holidays) and the tour lasts around 2 hours with a tasting.

If you don’t have time for a tour, the wines can be tasted and purchased in the unique modern shop in front of the winery from 10am-7pm, email works best.

Address: Av. de Vizcaya, 3 Phone: +34 902 123 904 Website: www.lopezdeheredia.com Email: [email protected]

bodega roda

Next you can visit a winery without the vast history of the others. Roda was founded in 1987 and didn’t open in Barrio de la Estacio until the 2000s. The winery has three different cellars, each using different techniques for aging the wine according to varietal.

You can visit the winery with an appointment Monday – Saturday. There are two tour times, 10am and 12pm. The visit costs 20€ and includes a walk through a photo exhibit and tasting of two wines and olive oil.

They also provide private tours with a tasting of 4 newer wines, or historical wines. Without a tour, you can stop by the wine bar at Roda at any time for a tasting without an appointment. The wine bar is open on Sunday, but closed on Thursday.

Address: Av. de Vizcaya, 5 Phone: +34 941 30 30 01 Website: www.roda.es Email: [email protected]

⇒ La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta

The Sociedad Vinecola de la Rioja Alta was started by 5 families from La Rioja and the Basque country in Haro in 1890. They’ve been making wine under the name La Rioja Alta ever since, with a number of prestigious brands that have earned them top honors.

Their location in Haro has been there for over 125 years. As one of the oldest wineries in Haro, it’s definitely one to add to your visit. The premium guided tour lasts 2 hours and costs 30. It runs Monday to Friday at 10am and Saturday at 11:30am, by appointment only.

They also have a weekend guided tour that’s 1:30 for 17. You can make your reservation in their online form . There’s a dining room where you can have lunch with an advanced appointment.

If you’d rather walk in for a tasting only, you can belly up to their wine bar that’s open Monday to Friday from 9am – 6pm for wines by the glass and wine sales.

Address: Av. de Vizcaya, 8 Phone: +34 941 31 03 46 Website: https://www.riojalta.com/

Where to Eat in Haro

Of course, after all this wine tasting, you’ll want to find some great food choices to soak it all up with. While none of the Haro bodegas have restaurants, you can schedule a traditional lunch at CVNE in advance.

Other restaurants can be found in the city center, which will require about a 1/2 mile walk from the wineries, or a quick drive.

Oven-roasted lamb at Terete

⇒ Terete Restaurant

The specialty at Terete Restaurant , which is located just a block from the center square, is the oven-roasted leg of lamb. You’ll see many clay pots filled with lamb pass through the dining room as they are taken to the wood-fired oven to be cooked.

It comes to your table sizzling and steaming, and the waiter will cut it and serve it for you. Of course, there are plenty of other things on the menu, but the lamb is the star. You really need a reservation here, unless you arrive at the very beginning of service and are lucky enough to snag an opening.

⇒ El Claustro of Hotel Los Agustinos Restaurant

One of the top places to stay in Haro is also one of the top places to eat. Originally a 14th-century convent, this beautiful, historic building is right in the center of Haro and a great location for wine tasting.

They serve creative Riojan cuisine at El Claustro de Los Agustinos restaurant and bistro.   Book yourself a room at Hotel Los Agustinos, then plan to eat there as well.

⇒ La Vieja Bodega

Located just outside of town, La Vieja Bodega is a great way to spend a leisurely lunch. You’ll have over 400 bottles of wine and an extensive and tasty menu of traditional and modern dishes to choose from. The restaurant is large, but can get packed with tour groups, so make sure to have a reservation (starting at 2pm for lunch).

Where to Stay in Haro

If you don’t have a car in Haro, it’s best to stay in the city center. That way, everything is within walking distance, or you can catch a bus to another nearby town easily. If you stay outside of town, you’ll need to take a taxi, which can get expensive.

If you do have a car, you can consider the hotels that are a little further out, which includes a few winery hotels. See our full post on where to stay in Rioja for more options.

⇒ Hotel Los Agustinos

los agustino

The hotel is located in a beautifully converted, centuries-old monastery in the center of town. The location is fantastic for walking around Haro and enjoying the town.

The central courtyard has been converted into an atrium. While it does get a bit noisy in the streets around the hotel on the weekends, you’ll find the rooms to be clean and comfortable.

⇒ Hotel Viura

Hotel Viura

Located about a 20-minutes drive from Haro is the trendy and modern Hotel Viura in Villabuena de Alava. We LOVE this hotel. The design is very unique and the rooms are large. There is a lovely restaurant downstairs with a tasting menu that can be paired with Rioja wines. And there is a bodega on the property as well.

If you’re wanting to go beyond Haro, we highly recommend Hotel Viura. It’s in a great spot for wine tasting!

⇒ Hotel Eguren Ugarte

Eguren Ugarte

Just a 25-minute drive from Haro is a really nice bodega called Eguren Ugarte , just outside the hilltop town of Laguardia. Not only does the winery have a fascinating tour and tasting, they also book out very nice rooms on the property, and they have a restaurant on sight.

It’s a great place to stay because of its proximity to so many great wineries and the town of Laguardia. Also, the views are spectacular!

Final Thoughts on Haro Wine Tasting

You can easily spend a week in Haro, visiting a winery or two per day, strolling around town, and visiting other nearby towns. It’s a great place for a relaxing vacation, but you can be as adventurous and busy as you want without running out of options.

As huge wine fans, we really appreciate this post – lots of great details and tips here. This sounds like a wine lovers dream! I really like the way you included the hotel information as well. This looks like the perfect way to spend a trip to Spain – good wine, good food, and good company 🙂

If you’re huge wine fans, you absolutely should plan a trip to La Rioja with a stop in Haro. You will LOVE it.

I’ve never been to Haro but it sounds pretty easy to get there. Great tip about having to book the winery tours in advance. Living in California, I’m so used to just showing up at a winery during tasting hours. I’m bummed I hadn’t researched Haro when I visited Madrid last year. I guess I’ll have to make another trip. 🙂

We have so many more trips to plan in Spain. I think we discover a new reason to go every week.

I love any wine tasting opportunity. Pair it with a great place to travel and it’s even better! I bet that hot air balloon ride would be just magical!

I’m with you on that, LeAnna. Any wine tasting opportunity is a good one.

Great tips- I agree that it usually works out better to plan a wine tasting tour yourself, as it guarantees you’ll get to visit vineyards you’re actually interested in, and not be rushed.

Absolutely! And not have to wait for slow pokes either!

I recognize some of these wines! Our neighbors in Boquete live in that region and import Spanish wines to Panama where they have stores in Panama City and Boquete. They are the life of the party and always bring a couple of cases (yes, you read that right) with them. 😉

I need to meet these folks. They’re my people!

I’ve never visited a winery before, but I have been to a wine festival in Cyprus and I loved it very much. I am partial to a Spanish wine, so I’ll have to add this to my long list of places I want to visit soon!

While I know that tours can sometimes be the only way, or totally worthwhile, I almost always prefer doing it on my own. Good to know that you don’t need a guided tour in Haro!

We prefer unguided too. Haro is perfect for that.

Love visiting wineries and have not made it to Rioja yet. Glad to see the ease of visiting the wineries in Haro…not needing a guide is perfect! We hope to get to Spain next year and will add Haro to the list. The wines sound really tasty…and Muga sounds like quite an experience 🙂

Muga is fantastic. A lot of the wineries in that area have fantastic experiences available to wine travelers.

What a great post. I love visiting wineries andLa Rioja region is pretty famous for its wine. Thanks for the great tips. A road trip to Haro is a must

We spent three nights at Los Agustinos. Simply outstanding. Lopez de Heredia, Muga, and Vivanco (amazing corkscrew collection in addition to the wine and fabulous lunch) were memorable highlights.

Yes, we saw that corkscrew collection! 🙂 Those are all fantastic wineries.

Planning on going to Haro in May how many days would you say is the minimum. We are huge wine fans. We are flying into Bilbao on the 28th of May and then have 6 days and would like to spend some time in San Sebastian and maybe go to Ribero del Duoro?

Hi Tracy, you’ll want to visit Haro plus Logrono and Laguardia. Minimum 3 days. Be sure to read our posts on Logrono and Rioja. We also have Ribera del Duero and San Sebastian content, both really great, though would be best to devote at least 2 days to each and since they are in opposite directions, you’d be spreading your time too thin to visit all. I would personally spend 3-4 days to Rioja and the rest in San Sebastian.

HI laura Thank you very much for your reply! Do you recommend basing out of Haro for visiting Logrono and rioja? After your email we are thinking 3 days in Haro Area and then on to San Sebastian for 2 days and a day in Bilbao. Aloha, Tracy

You can base yourself in Haro, but I actually prefer Logrono. The Hotel Plaza Mayor is a fantastic place to stay.

I love Haro and remember eating in one particular restaurant rather than visiting wineries. However, 95% of the time nowadays, I select wines from the Basque Country where I lived with a family in Zarauz (now written Zarautz in the Basque language or Euskara).

Hi Leonard. I definitely have some very fond memories of restaurants in Haro. Also really love the wine from the Basque Country too.

Sounds amazing! My husband to be and I will be going to Haro and logrono in July this year. Are there wine tours on Sundays as well, it is something we were worried about. Thanks!

Larna, most of the big wineries in Haro and Logrono area will be open on Sunday. Always book in advance to be sure!

Hi, great write up. Thank you. I’m planning spending a day in haro. How long should I plan for a tour and to get to the next winery? Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe. The wineries in Haro are very close together (many walking distance). A tour and tasting typically last up to 2 hours (but they vary). To be sure, you’ll have to consult each one. Often they have that info on their website.

Fantastic. Thank you. Are there any actual vineyards as opposed to just wineries that you’d recommend? I think we’d skip most tours and just do as you recommended and go to the tasting rooms.

One last question. What are your thoughts on Laguardia? I didn’t see anything on it on your site. Is it worth spending time there?

I believe all of the ones I mention have vineyards. Eguren Ugarte is one of my favorites – a beautiful vineyard. I like Laguardia as a place to walk around and get a meal, but there are only a few tasting rooms there (some with large underground tunnels). I prefer the other wineries surrounding the city.

So amazing write up… and you are so great to provide this article. This help me to start my wine trip plan. thanks so much.. 🙂

You’re welcome, Tom! Enjoy your trip.

We are planning to go by car to the Rioja area for 5 nights. We want to stay in one place, but visit others. Is 5 too many nights for Haro? Would it make a good base or would Logrono be better? Thanks – any help would be great!

Hi Nina. If you like wine tasting, 5 nights wouldn’t be too much. I would recommend Logrono instead. Don’t miss the pinchos crawl. Be sure to search our site for all rioja and Logrono content.

Hi Laura, I originally planned to be in San Sebastian from 1/21 – 1/23, then take the bus on the morning of 1/23 to Bilbao. My next flight departs Bilbao at 2:50pm on 1/25. My only goal for Bilbao is to see the Guggenheim, which I think I might be able to squeeze in first thing on 1/25.

Given that I won’t have a car, what is the best way for me to make the most of my time in Rioja? Should I spend a night in Logrono or Haro? Perhaps I could take a train/bus from San Sebastian on the morning of 1/23, spend the day and night in Rioja, spend morning of 1/24 tasting, then take a train/bus to Bilbao?

If this is possible, which wineries would you recommend, since I will have to rely on cabs or hire a car. (Also trying to save some money if possible.)

Thanks for your help! Diana

Diana, I`ve sent you an email with my recommendations, but I think taking the bus to Logrono for the Pinchos crawl, then on to Haro for wine tasting is the best way to maximize your time without a car.

Pingback: Wine Tasting in Rioja Spain (How and Where to Taste) | Savored Journeys

Hi Laura Your tips were an absolute saviour for us on our recent trip to Spain. Friends and I have been wanting to visit La Rioja for some time and when it came to research it and finding organised wine tours we really found very little information available. Your various posts made our trip! We stayed in Haro, visited most of the wineries and did the Logroño pinchos crawl. The joy of the trip was the lack of tourists so it’s not overrun like some many other wine regions. I hope information on the area stays on the low down so we can keep it all to ourselves. Anyone thinking of going – it’s a must for any wine lover.

Thank you for the kind words and for coming back to tell us our info was useful! That makes it all worth it. And I couldn’t agree more with you. La Rioja is a gem. I absolutely love it.

Hi Laura and Nick, Your site if very informative and accessible. We are planning our trip to Spain/Portugal for 9/22-10/12/19. We are traveling from Barcelona on 9/29 to travel through Northern Spain. I think will will be in Haro around 9/30 or 10/1. How far ahead of time should we make reservations for places to stay in Haro? It is a definite stop for us and the rest of the week until 9/6 is flexible. We will be heading to Galicia along the coast after Haro as we are oyster farmers and must also spend time on the coast

Hi Karen. Glad you like the site! You will just miss the harvest festival, I believe, but it is still harvest time then in Haro, so book ahead at least one month for your preferred hotel. If you don’t mind where you stay, one week ahead should be okay to get a room somewhere. Be sure to check out our post on Galicia!

Pingback: Where to Stay in La Rioja, Spain | Savored Journeys

Great read! we are heading to the area in November. What is the dress at wineries, casual? what about dress code at Michelin star restaurants?

Hi Jill. Dress code at wineries is smart casual. At Michelin star restaurants I’d advise dressing up (jacket for men). At other restaurants, smart casual is fine.

Such a helpful post! I am planning a trip to Rioja in April and have consulted this article several times in the planning process. One unfortunate correction- many of the Haro bodegas have changed their prices to €40+ for English tours (Lopez, CVNE..). Still looking forward to visiting some of these places, but maybe not for a tour. Thank you again though for the tips and recommendations!

I’m always sad to hear of price increases, but it’s inevitable in the current times. I hope you enjoy your trip!

Laura this is a wonderful resource. Thank you! I’m doing the planning for a visit to Spain in mid July for a group of 15 experienced wine tourists. We only have two full days in Rioja. The wineries in Haro (CVNE, Muga, Tondonia, Roda, Gomez Cruzado and La Rioja Alta) all sound like great stops and in convenient proximity. I’d love your advice on a couple related questions. Is it a mistake to spend one of our two days there, or should we just spend part of a day there and then get out into Laguardia and other places away from town? If we were only to visit two or three of that Haro group, which would you recommend? If just one tour, which one? In part, I’m wondering how similar (repetitive) the Haro group is. Would appreciate any insight. Thanks, again!

I would only spend one day, or part of a day, in Haro. My favorites are Muga, CVNE, and Gomez Cruzado, but they are all great. Many of them have huge underground cellars – definitely see CVNE’s cellar. But then move on to see Ysios and Eguren Ugarte and the town of Laguardia. There are also great wineries near Logrono (along with the famous pinchos crawl).

I just wanted to say thank you for all the information on this page! An impromptu trip to Spain and a long awaited detour to Rioja wine region – your tips, email links and suggestions have been amazing! I’m a wine educator in Dorset and can’t wait to visit!

That’s fantastic to hear Maria! Enjoy the trip.

Top Wineries to Visit in Rioja: A Tour of Bodegas Roda

wine tours haro spain

Where does Bodegas Roda name come from?

In 1987, Mario Rotllant and Carmen Daurella arrived in La Rioja to start a bodega with a new word in winemaking.  The name RODA combined the two last names of the founders.

How to get to Bodegas Roda?

Bodegas Roda, extremely successful today, stands in the Haro Train Station District, next to the historic wineries of Rioja built in the 19th century.   You can get here on foot from the center of Haro in approximately 10-15 minutes, or take a short taxi ride.

Bodegas Roda is approximately 35 minutes away from Logrono by N-232.

You cannot miss Bodegas Roda in Haro, its sign dominates the Train Station District.  Roda is the first winery that you see entering Haro Train Station District from the highway.

Address: Bodegas Roda, Av. Vizcaya, 5, 26200 Haro, La Rioja, Spain

wine tours haro spain

My impression of Bodegas Roda is that it is very similar to a Bordeaux winery just very large. Of course, there are major differences, but this vat room alone made me feel a bit like in the Medoc.

Here, vinification is done in temperature-controlled French oak vats and aging is completed in French oak barrels.

wine tours haro spain

Barrels, hundreds of barrels are everywhere and they are familiarly painted red in the middle.

A French oak barrel is made of 200-year-old tree, of which only 30% can be used for barrel making.  Barrels are made by hand and then used only for a couple of vintages.  With a cost of a barrel at around 1,000 euros, imagine, the investment and work that goes into only one of these cellars.  But Bodegas Roda has three.

Impressive "Calados"

Besides this impressive modern cellar, you will visit a couple of very unusual ones.

The winery looks very modern on the outside, but it stands on top of “calado”, an underground cellar built in the 19th century.  “Calados”  are often found in this area.

In the past, they were used as cool spaces to keep crops, food and wine. Today, at Bodegas Roda, the underground space is turned into an aging cellar where the wine spends between 6 months and several years.

wine tours haro spain

The top wines of the estate are held in “calados” which have been extended to create a huge underground aging cellar for premium Roda wines (below).

wine tours haro spain

These cellars are dark and moist creating ideal temperatures for the aging of Rioja wines.

My guide opens the door at the end of the historic calados, and we are on the banks of the river Ebro. This looks like a great spot for tastings and picnics with the views and the river breeze.

If you are looking for a private tour at Bodegas Roda, look into the Ebro Balcony option.  It includes a tasting of four wines paired with tortilla (Spanish omelet), jamon, salads, and other Riojan delicacies.

wine tours haro spain

Our tasting was organized in the modern side of the winery, on a terrace with a view of vineyards, Haro on the hill and by a fish pond – another amazing outdoor tasting room.

wine tours haro spain

What kind of wines are made at Bodegas Roda?

Bodegas Roda produces 4 red wines:  Sela, a young wine, two reserva wines, Roda and Roda I as well as a collection gem Cirsion.

Every year Bodegas Roda sends several people to search for the best old vines in the region which can then be made into Cirsion. They do not find good enough grapes each year, so Cirsion is only made in good years. We tasted 2017 – cherry and violet dominate the palate.  Cirsion  is a young wine that spends only 8 months aging in new French barrels.  The wine is fruity, fresh, yet has an impressive body and pleasant tannins.

Besides wines, Bodegas Roda offers tasting of two premium olive oil brands that the owners produce on the island of Majorca.

Questions you may have about our rioja wine tours.

1 – Pick-up location . Pick-up and drop-off are included in our private wine tours in Rioja. Our region is not huge, but that does not mean we can pick you up from all locations. The price of our tours includes pick up and drop off for the following locations. If yours is not on this list you can assume that an extra fee will apply.

City of Logroño, Haro, Laguardia, villages between Laguardia and Haro (this includes hotels Marques de Riscal, Viura and Palacio Tondon)

If you are looking for a wine tour in Rioja from Bilbao or from San Sebastian you should look at the bottom of this page where you will find specific Rioja wine tours from these two cities.

2- Pick up time. The pick-up time will be confirmed by your guide. You can estimate pick-up will take place between 09:00 and 09:30 in the morning.

3- Drop-off time. Not all tours end at the exact same time (this can vary based on your accommodation and also on the tour chosen or the wineries selected for a given day) You should estimate the tour will end 8 hours after your pick-up time.

4- Will I be able to purchase wine during the tour?  Yes, you will be able to purchase wine. Most wineries we visit do also send wine outside of Spain, including to the United States.

5- Does the price of the tour include wine tasting? Yes, wine is tasted at all wineries visited. The actual number of wines tasted varies from tour to tour. You can find more information on the tour descriptions. Please note that since the selection of wineries for a given day may vary, the actual number of tastings of a tour can also change. As a general rule, at least two wines are tasted at each winery. Your guide will indicate how many tastings are included in each of the visits. At some wineries, you may also have the opportunity to purchase extra tastings or also purchase wine and enjoy it there. Please note that those extras will need to be paid on top of the tour fee and they can only be paid directly at the winery premises.

6- Does the price of the tours include meals? Yes, a high-quality Rioja meal is included with the price of the tour. Wine is included though if you would like to request a specific wine from the restaurant´s wine list you will need to pay for this at the restaurant.

7- Are vegetarian options available? Riojan gastronomy is rich in vegetables and you can rest assured there will be options for you in case you require a vegetarian menu. Your guide will enquire about dietary restrictions to make sure there is no problem for you during your wine tour in Rioja.

Rioja: more than wine. Beautiful landscapes, history, and gastronomy

We are very proud of our land. And we believe we have good reasons to be so. Many visitors tell us one of the things they love about Rioja is the fact it resembles the wine country of their dreams, the landscapes as sometimes seen in postcards.

Rioja is full of rolling green hills where small ancient villages stand. You will discover walled cities next to the river Ebro and mountains to both North and South. The mountains on the North are the majestic Sierra de Cantabria. These mountains are fundamental for our wines since they ensure the cold winds of the Atlantic don´t reach us. The mountains to the South are the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. Two of Spain´s most important monasteries are located near those mountains. Yuso and Suso. The Spanish language was first written in them. Those are lands well-known to pilgrims. Rioja is an important part of El Camino de Santiago, and pilgrims find their most important stop in Rioja at Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

Despite Rioja is a small region, it is full of history. Traces of Neolithic activity are visible not far from Laguardia, and close to some small roads, you can still be surprised by stones that were used to press grapes and produce wine.

During our wine tours in Rioja, we make sure we take the roads where the most beautiful landscapes are enjoyed. We also make sure you taste not just wines, but also good examples of our rich and tasty gastronomy.

Wine Fight – La Batalla del Vino de Haro

27 – 28 – 29 – 30 June

wine tours haro spain

THE MIGHTY WINE FIGHT IN HARO, SPAIN

Each year between the 27th and 30th of June, thousands of thirsty locals and a handful of lucky (wine addicted) tourists climb a mountain in La Rioja, Spain, and throw the sweet red liquid all over each other. This is St Peter’s Feast Day, though you’d be lucky to find a local who could tell you so, and the event is known around these parts as La Batalla del Vino de Haro – or better known by us guiris as the Wine Fight.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE WINE FIGHT

The madness of the annual wine fight starts the night before, on the evening of the 28th of June. This is by far the biggest party that the quaint town of Haro sees. As the night unfolds, the whole town gathers on the streets, from children to grandparents, who all party the night away in the town’s cobbled streets, buzzing bars and picturesque Spanish squares.

THE WINE FIGHT AFTER PARTY

After a few hours of frolicking and fun, the fight descends down the mountain and moves into the town of Haro, where the only fight is done with traditional dances – the kind that can only be induced by hours of red wine pouring down one’s throat. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? Don’t miss your chance to take part in the Wine Fight, also known as the Batalla del Vino en Haro .

WINE FIGHT HISTORY

Haro, a pittoresque place in the Rioja region, is one of the most important wine producers in the region. Up to 40% of the Rioja vineyards are located there and the town is totally devoted to the producing of the best Rioja wine since wine is vital to the town’s economy. So every year on the 29th of June, the locals of Haro celebrate San Pedro with their own Haro Wine Festival.

THE WINE FIGHT PARTY

Considering that the action takes place during the early morning, and the party from the night before will blow your mind, it’s a good idea to make a night of it. While the town is light on accommodation options and full of tourists, the campsite in town is a great, cheap and easy option. If you don’t have any camping gear or want to carry bags of stuff to Haro, don’t worry, tour group possibilities are available.

WINE FIGHT ON SNAPCHAT

Are you using Snapchat? This year’s Wine Fight will be covered by on the Snapchat Live Story. This means that your snaps of the mid-battle action of the Wine Fight will be seen by millions of Snapchat users around the world. Make sure to Wine-proof your phone with a zip-lock bag or waterproof case, charge the battery and load up with data so you can submit your snaps!

La Batalla del Vino, a wine-filled experience you can’t miss.

Spanish Culture Meets Adventure

Haro, Spain

Haro makes a great base from which to explore the region, being located just 1hr 10 minutes from Bilbao international airport and ferry port by road (100 – 110 km) and also accessible by public transport.  It is also just a 30-minute drive from Laguardia (40 minutes from Logrono or Vitoria).  It is a small (12,000 inhabitants), but bustling town, with a good mixture of locals and foreign visitors in the summer.

In winter it is still a good place to visit as businesses and shops remain open for the local population, unlike many seaside resorts.

WHERE TO STAY IN HARO

WINE AND WINERIES

Wine tours in haro, food and drink, activities in and around haro.

Haro, Rioja

It is a town that prides itself on its culture and art – and this is immediately observable from the bronze statues and wall art that decorate the town.  A self-declared open-air museum, Haro, the capital of Rioja, is indeed an interesting town with its own distinct flavour.  And of course, no shortage of fantastic wine!

The town is effectively divided into two parts – the historic centre, and the wine region centred near the train station, about 10-15 minutes’ walk away from the heart of the town, in a district known as the Barrio de la Estacion.

Despite its relatively modest size, the town offers a surprising range of activities, from the more sedate to the most energetic, so you will definitely find something to keep every member of the family happy. And if you are looking for something a little quirky, where else will you have the opportunity to visit a winery for a tasting on a Quad bike, or in a horse-drawn carriage?

VISIT OUR TRAVEL SECTION for information on how to get to Rioja from the UK

Haro is easily accessible from Bilbao , which is an international transport hub with a ferry terminal and international airport.  From Bilbao there are plenty of options for car hire.  Whether you plan on taking public transport, hiring a car or bringing your own on the ferry from Portsmouth (2 hours’ drive from London) or from Rosslare (2 hours’ drive from Dublin) you will find Haro a very convenient destination, just 1hr 10 minutes (just over 100km) from Bibao.

Alternatively, Haro can be reached within 2 hours by car from Santander airport/ferry terminal (190km).

However, if you don’t want to travel by car, Haro is accessible from Bilbao by public transport and benefits from a regular, cheap service. You can take a public bus departing every 20 minutes through most of the day from Bilbao airport to Bilbao bus station for EUR 3 (check the bus schedule if your flight arrives very late).  From the bus station there are frequent buses on the line to Logrono.  There are around 10 departures per day, with a journey time of just over 1 hour.  Tickets cost EUR 5,40 one way.  Prices as at September 2022. For exact details of times etc see the Cuadra Bus website

Due in part to its wealthy history, Haro is a town that contains a large number of historic buildings and museums , despite its small size.

A few minutes’ walk from the main Peace Square (Plaza de la Paz) you will easily find a small square (the aptly named Plaza de la Iglesia – Church Square) containing the Parish church of Saint Thomas .  The building of this monument started in the 16 th century, built on a plot of an earlier church of the same name.

Also worth visiting is the Basilica of Our Lady of Vega which has great significance for the town of Haro, with several days of fiestas dedicated to her patronage every year (see our Events section).  The church is in the Baroque style, built in the 17 th century, and can be found at Avenida Breton de los Herreros.

Banco de Espana

Other buildings of note include the Banco de Espana, an ornate building which seems rather grand for such a small town, but a testament to her remarkable past.   There is also an interesting mix of palaces in the town centre, constructed in the 16 th to 18 th centuries, through which we can see an evolution of architectural design.  A number of these palaces have remarkable facades. Of particular note are the Counts of Haro Palace , built late 16 th /early 17 th century, located on the same square as the parish church of Saint Thomas and the fantastically ornate Palace in the Plaza de la Cruz, which was completed in the late 18 th century.

In terms of Museums, whilst Haro does have the usual indoor museums, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art located at the main Plaza de la Paz, it has also taken a more unusual approach to displaying its heritage, as perhaps befits a location with such a great climate – you can’t help but notice it’s Open-Air Museum .  In fact, the town proudly proclaims itself to be an open-air museum, although one might view it as more of an open-air art gallery. You do not need to walk for long in the town before noticing the vast murals on the sides of buildings, or the curious bronze statues.

Dotted around the town you will find large bronze statues that catch the eye.  Amongst other themes are a number of statues that depict the town’s trades – vintners, coopers, wineskin makers, gardeners, they are all proudly standing there to remind you of what this town is about.

Haro offers the visitor a wide range of accommodation opportunities, with a 4* Hotel and four 3* Hotels, depending on your budget and desire for luxury.  Alternatively, there is a camp site, hostel, and pension for those of you who are looking to get the most value for your money.

If you look at a map you will see that the old historic town centre of Haro is bordered broadly to the East by the River Ebro, and to the North by the River Tiron. Just on the other side of the River Tiron can be found the wine region, a vast area of wineries located just on the outskirts of the town, along with Haro’s RENFE train station.

Haro has been a centre for wine production for centuries, and according to the Haro tourist office, by 1669 there were already 116 wineries associated with the town.

The heart of the wine region is the “Barrio de la Estacion” or “station neighbourhood”. The train station was built in the 1860s and owes its existence to a historic event that some might say gave rise to a publicity boost for the Rioja wines, already known in the local area for their quality. In the late 1850s the Great French Wine Blight, properly known as Phylloxera, arrived from the US and decimated many European vineyards, notably the famous wines south western France, and of Bordeaux. While the French vineyard owners searched for a remedy, many of them went south, to Spain, in search of new territory. They took with them the French methods of wine production, which was a significant influence in the production of wine in the Rioja region. At around this time, the train station in Haro was opened and wineries were built in the surrounding area, enabling wine to be transported in bulk to Bordeaux.

From the historic centre of Haro the Barrio de la Estacion is just over 1km away, and can be easily reached on foot in under 15 minutes. If you are looking for long-established wineries and the opportunity for excellent tastings, this is the place to be. The area is home to 7 different wineries, of which no less than 5 have been in continuous operation for over a century. This area is often referred to as “The Golden Mile of Rioja” . It is a vibrant place, where various activities and events are organised throughout the year. This includes the District Station Tasting day, which usually takes place in June, during which in one day all of the wineries can be visited, with tastings of two wines and one tapas available at each one. The day is usually rounded off with entertainment such as a concert. There are also “wine passports” available at certain times of the year, which is a bit like a Haro version of a pub crawl. And in early December there is the turning on of the lights and a Christmas concert.

For more information and dates see the Events section.

If you are looking to get a taste of proper, traditional Spanish food, you will not be disappointed in Haro.  Typical local dishes not to be missed include vegetable stew (minestra), garlic soup, lamb cutlets grilled in vine shoots (sarmiento), stuffed peppers and snails.  All to be washed down, of course, with your choice of local rioja.

At lunchtime the restaurants can get very busy as lots of Spaniards take advantage of the fixed price menus which offer excellent value for money, and usually include a choice of starter, mains and dessert, together with bread, wine and water included in the fixed price. It is a good idea to get there when service starts, often at 13.00, or you might miss out.

If you are looking for a copious, tasty good value meal at lunchtime you should head to Plaza de la Paz – Peace Square – where, in the surrounding streets you will find an abundance of restaurants and cafes.

As well as the many bars and restaurants you will also find bakeries selling some unusual, local delights.   Don’t miss the fantastic Rioja wine truffles!

For many people the best time to go out and eat is the early evening, when a whole array of eateries come to life, and you can experience the local buzz.   You will find in the area around Herradura Street a variety of old, traditional bars, where you can buy “pinchos” the local version of tapas, to eat alongside your choice of Rioja.  You can go from bar to bar, having a very special type of pub-crawl, where the food is as important as the drink.  The word pinchos comes from the Spanish verb pinchar, to pierce, and you may notice that most of these small dishes are skewered together with a cocktail stick.   A typical bar will contain a wide variety, often different types of topping on small slices of bread.  Don’t worry too much about what might be inside – they are all delicious!!
