While visitors may be familiar with the park usually being closed in September, no such decision to close the park this year has been made. Any decision to close the park, if at all, will be if a severe drought occurs. So, let’s hope for the best!

Itineraries

3 night camping.

Spend 3 nights in our luxury camping site and enjoy the days and nights of wilderness. Go on safari in various blocks of Yala and other adjoining parks

• Will pick up at our meeting point at Kataragama between 12.00 noon and 13.00 pm.
• Enjoy a delicious lunch at the campsite.
• You have 3 options – Game drive at Yala Block 5 , Safari in  Lunugamwehera or Bird watching tour (binoculars, birds’ book & cool box will be provided)
• Break (soft drinks at beachside, riverside or lakeside)
• First day safari will be ended at 6.15 pm.
• Returning back to the campsite and can refresh yourself with a shower of cool or hot water.
• Enjoy beer, red or white wine , cocktail as much as possible
• Dinner which will be served around a bonfire under the starlit sky. ( BBQ or guests’ choice )
• Waking up with beautiful birds’ tunes & coffee or tea will be served.
• Morning game drive (starts at 5.00 am).
• Breakfast will be served to you while enjoying the safari and there will be a cool box with several beverages (fruit juices, soft drinks, water etc.) for refreshment.
• Game drive up to 12.30 pm & lunch break at the beachside or riverside or lakeside.
• Evening game drive will be started at 2.30 pm.(cool box with several beverages)
• Game drive will be ended at 6.15 pm.
• Returning to the campsite and can refresh yourself with cool or hot water shower.
• Red or white wine, beer and a delicious dinner will be served around a bonfire under the starlit sky.
• Morning game drive (starts at 5.00 am) in Yala 3,4 and 5 blocks.

Yala National Park and Safari: Ultimate Guide

Yala National Park is a wildlife sanctuary in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka. The park is the second-largest national park in the country for the best Safari experience, spanning over 978.8 square kilometres. It is home to diverse flora and fauna, including Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and over 200 bird species. The park was first established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was later declared a national park in 1938. This article will provide an ultimate guide to visiting Yala National Park and Safari.  

Flora and Fauna at Yala National Park 

It is considered one of the best places in the country for observing and photographing wildlife in its natural habitat. The park spans over 979 square kilometres and is home to many flora and fauna.

Flora:   The vegetation in Yala National Park is characterized by dry monsoon forest, thorny scrub, and savannah grasslands. The park has over 215 species, including trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses. The most common trees found in the park are Satin, Palu, Weera, Ehala, and Kumbuk.

Fauna:   Yala National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including 44 species of mammals and 215 species of birds. The park is most famous for its large population of Sri Lankan leopards, considered the highest density of leopards in the world. Visitors to the park can also see Asian elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, water buffalo, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard.

The park is also a bird watcher’s paradise, with over 215 species of birds recorded within its boundaries. The most common birds found in the park are the Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Black-capped Bulbul, Indian Peafowl, and the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo.

Visitors can explore the park on safari jeeps accompanied by experienced guides knowledgeable about the park’s wildlife and vegetation. The park has five zones, each offering a different wildlife experience. Visitors can also enjoy camping, bird watching, and nature walks in the park.

However, it’s important to note that many of the species in Yala National Park are endangered due to human-wildlife conflict and habitat destruction. Therefore, visitors should not disturb the wildlife or damage their habitats.

Leopards : Yala National Park is famous for its leopard population, and it’s one of the best places in the world to spot these elusive cats. The park has a high density of leopards; visitors can spot them during their safari tours. Elephants: Yala National Park is also home to many elephants, and visitors can see herds of them grazing in the park’s grasslands. When to Visit Yala National Park

In addition, the temperature during this time is pleasant, ranging from 25°C to 30°C, making it comfortable for visitors to explore the park. However, it’s essential to note that the high season is also the busiest time of the year, and the park can get crowded with tourists. Shoulder Season (May to July and September to November): The shoulder season is an excellent time to visit Yala National Park to avoid crowds and experience good wildlife sightings. During this time, the park’s vegetation is thicker, making it a little harder to spot animals. However, the park’s flora is also in full bloom during this time, making it a beautiful sight to behold. The temperature during the shoulder season is slightly higher, ranging from 30°C to 35°C, but it’s still comfortable for visitors to explore the park. Low Season (August): Due to the monsoon season, the low season is the least popular time to visit Yala National Park. In addition, the park is closed for most of August due to heavy rainfall, making it challenging to explore the park. However, the park’s flora is in full bloom during this time, making it a beautiful sight to behold.

The best time to visit Yala National Park depends on what you want to see and experience. If you wish to spot leopards and other wildlife, the high season is the best time to visit. If you want to avoid crowds and still experience good wildlife sightings, the shoulder season is an excellent time to visit. However, despite the heavy rainfall, the low season is the best time to see if you want to share the park’s full bloom.

Getting to Yala National Park

By Bus: Several buses operate from major cities in Sri Lanka to Tissamaharama, the nearest town to Yala National Park. From Tissamaharama, you can hire a taxi or a jeep to reach the park. The bus journey from Colombo to Tissamaharama takes approximately eight hours.

By Car: If you prefer a more comfortable and convenient mode of transportation, you can hire a car or a taxi to reach Yala National Park. Several car rental companies operate in Sri Lanka, and you can book a car in advance to avoid any last-minute hassle. The journey from Colombo to Yala National Park takes approximately five hours.

Once you reach the park, you can hire a jeep with a driver to explore the park’s various attractions. The entrance fee for foreigners is approximately $30 per person, which includes the cost of the jeep and the driver. What is Yala National Park?

Yala National park is the oldest and the second largest national park in the Country. It is a secondary growth of the forest where used to be an ancient kingdom over 2000 years ago.

Yala is home for an array of wildlife while the different blocks (sectors) of the park fall under multiple climate zones, changing landscape, vegetation and animal densities different between each block.

Yala is renowned for its highest density of leopards in the world making it the world’s best destination to see a leopard in the wild, even ousting Africa. 

Collaborative research carried out by frequent visitors of Yala has identified and profiled over 100 individual leopards in Block 1 it self over 5 years time.

As in climate zones While block 2 of Yala falls under the arid zone, block 1 falls under semi arid and block 3-4-5 extends into intermediate and dryzone. Therefore vegetation in Yala extends from shrub jungles of thorny bushes to dual layered riparian gallery forest with a tree canopy.

What animal to see in Yala National Park?

When it comes to exciting big animals, all of the terrestrial Ceylon big five, elephants, leopards, bears, wild water buffalos, and wild bores can be encountered in Yala national park.

Also a lesser known top-fact of Yala is that it is also the highest density of mugger crocodiles in the world.

For birding in Yala national park, is like birders paradise! The great yala complex is home to over 200 species of resident birds with over another hundreds of migrant and vagrant species in winter months. There are several bird species endemic to the park itself.

The Greater Yala Complex

Alone, Yala National Park area extends over 96,000 ha (hectares) among 5 blocks or sectors.

But the Great Yala complex is a bigger nature reserve in the country  combining; Yala (Ruhunu), Lunugamvehera (Yala West or Block 6), Kumana (Yala East) National Parks, along with Kataragama, Katagamuwa, Panama-Kudumbigala wildlife sanctuaries and a  a Tier 1 protected area called  Yala strict nature reserve.

We enjoyed our stay at Chamith’s hotel. He owns the place with his brother and they’ve had a really hard go at it since covid. You can now really tell they’re doing their absolute best to give you an amazing experience. The bungalows are new, clean, large and have everything you need. The owners prepared us food for the evenings and even packed us breakfast for our very early safari (very tasty!). All in all, if you like wildlife and nature, don’t think twice before coming here! Thank you Chamith.

Staff and management were just excellent - very friendly. We ate both evening meals at the hotel and the food was good, portions large and prices reasonable for remote location ($5-$7 per meal). Great service and attentive staff. Nice chalet style bungalow rooms, relatively modern but could do with a bit of a renovation in the near future

The lodge was really clean and excellent size with good air conditioning. The hotel organised a great safari and transfer to next destination. They communicated well prior to arrival re safari options. Food made to order was lovely.

The staff were super friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. They have new mattresses which were soft and very comfy. The safari was incredible, and the driver was just amazing. I highly recommend Wadula Safari, unforgettable experience.

The staff was super nice and the owner took us for a walk around the area during sunset to show us all the birds and the beautiful nature. we had great candle light dinner and also used the opportunity to do a safari with them. They prepared breakfast for us which we had at the beach during the safari and our guide was an expert in finding the animals ;)

Very nice and clean rooms. We stayed in a bungalow in the middle of the jungle. The bungalow had nice high ceilings, a little porch and aircondition. The hosts are very nice and made us feel very welcome. We had a nice Dinner surrounded by oil lamps in the middle of nature. The hosts organized a half Day Safari for us and packed a nice breakfast with fruits and sandwiches. The place is very close to the park entrance so we started at 5:30 am bit were still one of the first jeeps in the park. The beds are comfortablewe slept really well.

Fantastic place such a fabulous spot and idyllic in every way the brothers who run it were so kind and thoughtful. Best biryani ever, given on a table under the stars and fireflies dancing around totally magic. The safari they organised was great as was the evening walk they gave us and we’ve were able to enjoy a sunset over the lake. I can’t recommend highly enough I think I have found paradise.

Very good hotel”

Staff were friendly. Location and atmosphere were very nice

Nice room but no love”

The room was a nice room and as a group of 4 we had booked 2 (twin beds in each). When we arrived we were told that monkeys had destroyed the AC, electrics, water and wifi for the second room next door and so we could only share a room with a couple sleeping in a single bed together, myself on a single bed and another person on the floor. Later than night we came to realise a family was now in the room next door (the one monkeys had trashed). Anyway, we chose to dine at the place... had to pre order by 4pm and dine at 8pm. The food was served cold. The next day we were given breakfast (noodles from the previous night). When we checked out we were then charged for the room we slept in and then we got an aidditonal charge (the second room but half price). After arguing this it was discounted. The place was a convenient overnight stop over however I would not recommend it as it was flawed with so many problems.

Kataragama Safari Tour included sandwich was so good. But some extra costs were expensive. I recommend you to verify extra service's price before staying at the hotel.

Hi Can anyone recommend a safari company that would pick us up in Kataragama? We will be there later in the year. Am I right in thinking there is a second and less busy gate to the park near Kataragama. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Yup the gate is in Katagamuwa entrance,that located in Katharagama-Sithulpawwa road (12Km from Kataragama town). There are lots of safari jeeps around Kataragama town & any of them will pick you from

your hotel as per your request.Just you have to let them know the day before your safari date,also you can

First pl be informed that Yala is closed from 1st sept to 15 October if you are travelling during that period.

However Lunugamvehera NP which is actually the other side of the Yala park will remain open.

There is no need to pre book your safari . There are jeeps staring from Katharagama to Yala or Lunugamvehera.

If you are visiting to Yala hop into a bus and get down at Tissa. Plenty of jeeps a safari would half day safari would cost you LKR 5000/- approx from Tissa. If you start from Kataragama it would be around 6 -7 k.

Lunugamvehera would cost you around LKR 7000/- from Kataragama

No there is a bit difference,both of gates in Yala block i but Jeeps are entering in Palatupana just run up to the Patanangala & jeeps from Katagamuwa also run upto the same point,hence jeeps from Katagamuwa do not cover Uraniya,Wilapalawa,Rukwila,Mahaseelawa...etc & the ones who entry from Palatupana do not cover Warahana,Thalgasmankada,Akasachaithya...etc.So there is a bit diffrence.
