Can anybody tell me please why I would need Amtrak ticket insurance on my ticket purchase?

We are a family travelling from NY Penn to Baltimore in August. The ticket insurance is an extra $9 per ticket. Is it because the tickets are only valid on the particular journey booked.

You should have no need for such a short journey. There are multiple trains each day on that route and you should be able to change to another one with no problem. I assume the insurance is being offered by your ticketing agent as Amtrak itself has no such thing.

Its being offered by Amtrak on the website. Thank you for your advice. Am I correct in thinking that if the 12:35 from NYC Penn was cancelled then I can use my tickets for another train later in the day?

If a train is cancelled it the railway's responsibility to get you to your destination, so the simple answer is yes. However if trains on a certain route have compulsory reservations you will probably need to get your ticket(s) revalidated or re-issued. But there should be no extra cost.

The items covered by the insurance are explained on the AMTRAK web site. It does not cover a missed train. If you miss your train, Amtrak will allow you to travel on another train. Depending on what fare level you bought (Saver, Value, etc.), and available fares that day, you may or may not have to pay extra for the rebooking. Regardless, the insurance doesn’t cover it.

No insurance needed.

I bought cancellation insurance when booking my Amtrak trip and my credit card was charged. The policy was to be sent to my email. It never was. Nowhere can the insurance company find me. Can't make a claim when there is no record of me.

I just purchased a ticket and the insurance for $9 and now have to cancel plans. Essentially Amtrak highly pushes this coverage via THEIR website and then you find if you need to change plans that Allianz carves out the majority or reasons for cancellation. You only get so much time to purchase the ticket and Amtrak clearly advertises "Peace of Mind", "Compensation", Another Amtrak customer purchased their trip....", etc... that you really do not have time to then jump our to Allianz to read the small print. Either you or family members need to be dying or very sick or their is a major catastrophe. I find both Amtrak and Allianz to be extremely deceptive in their advertising and I plan to contact the BBB and every other agency that I can. Don't expect that by getting insurance that if your plan do change that you will be reimbursed.

"Essentially Amtrak highly pushes this coverage via THEIR website" I wouldn't even know where to find it. You don't need insurance.

Post #7, aren't you maybe being a little hyperbolic? First I'd be curious to know exactly how Amtrak and Allianz are deceptive. Amtrak may encourage you to buy trip the insurance, it's not as though you're getting the hard sell. You're either going to click "yes" that you want the product, or "no" you do not. It's not that hard to figure out is it?

Is it also really that much of a burden to actually read and understand what you are buying? If the site times out because of a lack of activity just restart it.

More people need to realise that advertising is there to serve the company or companies behind it, and to regard it accordingly by exercising caution and not taking everything at face value.

When buying any kind of insurance, it's vital to check what is covered and what isn't. If you choose not to do that, how can you possibly know if it's worth getting or not? You should never expect to be covered unless you've already determined that you will be.

Does My Credit Card Travel Insurance Cover Amtrak Trips?

Ethan Steinberg

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

"Reader Questions" are answered twice a week by TPG Senior Points & Miles Contributor Ethan Steinberg .

Travel insurance can be a great way to recoup some of your costs if things go wrong on the road, be it weather delays or an airline going bankrupt . You might even have travel insurance coverage you didn't know about, especially if you booked with one of our favorite travel rewards cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve. TPG reader Sama wants to know if this coverage extends to train tickets as well ...

[pullquote source="TPG READER SAMA"]I booked an Amtrak ticket using my Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Am I covered if there's an interruption, delay or cancellation during my trip?[/pullquote]

It's no surprise that we often think about trip cancellation as it relates to our free flights and hotel stays here at TPG. However, if you read the terms and conditions of your card's travel insurance policy, you'll actually see a different phrase used in most cases: "common carrier." Take a look at how Chase describes the trip delay reimbursement benefit on the Sapphire Reserve website:

amtrak travel insurance

So what exactly does common carrier mean? Chase gives us a few examples on the website ( emphasis mine):

"Reimbursement is in excess of any travel insurance purchased, or reimbursement from the occupancy provider or common carrier such as airline, bus, cruise ship, or train ."

Technically a common carrier (or "public carrier" in some countries) is a company that transports goods or people on a regular basis under the license or authority of a regulatory body. While Chase's examples make it pretty clear that a regularly scheduled commuter rail service — like Amtrak or the high-speed bullet trains you'll find in many Asian countries — constitutes a common carrier, so do a number of less obvious companies. Cruise and bus lines do, and many tour companies that operate under a regular schedule with a license might also be considered common carriers.

If you're unsure about your specific circumstances, you can always call your card's benefits administrator and ask if your travel operator is classified a common carrier. While the insurance providers are highly unlikely to comment on the result of a hypothetical claim, they'll happily discuss your situation and tell you whether you would be eligible to submit a claim if your trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled.

Bottom Line

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the all around best travel rewards cards for a number of reasons, including the broad way Chase defines the travel bonus category and the plethora of travel insurance policies the card provides. While you might be familiar with some of these policies as they apply to delayed or cancelled flights, the reality is that "common carrier" service encompasses many other forms of regularly scheduled transportation as well.

Amtrak operates much of the rail network across the United States, providing an alternative form of transportation to driving or flying . But is Amtrak safe? Let’s take a look at a few common questions people may have when they consider the safety of train travel with this company.

What is the Amtrak safety record?

Like other forms of public transportation, train companies, including Amtrak, have to conform to a series of standards to maintain safety and reliability.

The U.S. Federal Railroad Administration oversees train travel in the United States and aims to assure a high level of train safety. It is also responsible for systemwide innovations and upgrades that can improve the experience and efficiency of train travel around the country. Amtrak must adhere to this body's regulations in order to operate.

Amtrak also has its own board of directors that oversees day-to-day operations and sets policy for the network. The U.S. Department of Transportation secretary (or an appointee) is also on the board.

Train crashes are unlikely, but they do happen. A 2013 study in the Research in Transportation Economics journal found that a person was 17 times more likely to die while traveling in a car compared with on a train. (That same study found that air travel is about 100 times safer than traveling by car). In short, derailments are scary, but are thankfully uncommon.

Does Amtrak have onboard and station security?

Amtrak offers onboard and station security, but you may not always see its staff in action. That’s because Amtrak has more than 400 employees both on the front lines and behind the scenes conducting safety measures. This includes Amtrak’s own police department, which is responsible for keeping passengers and train crew safe.

These employees work to deter crime on board trains as well as in and around Amtrak stations, for everyday safety and for events that may require additional support, like political conventions, large-scale community events or severe weather situations.

Is the Amtrak safe when traveling alone?

Yes, because of security patrols, it is generally safe to travel Amtrak alone. But, like in any situation, it is wise to remain vigilant and keep your eyes on personal belongings, regardless of the mode of transportation.

Luggage racks on trains can sometimes be out of sight, so it’s best to pack light so that you can keep your belongings as close as possible. If you can store them in an overhead rack, that’s even better.

Be extra aware when trains are approaching a station since someone could take your items and disembark. You can always contact an Amtrak employee if you notice something out of the ordinary or feel unsafe.

It’s wise to arrive at the station 20-30 minutes before departure so you can locate your departure platform and be fully aware of your surroundings. When you’re rushed, it’s easier to let your guard down.

A wise option for solo travelers is to choose a seat in the quiet car (if available), which limits conversation and cell phone use to provide a more comfortable travel experience. There’s no additional charge on most trains to sit here, and unless you are on Acela (the company's passenger train service along the Northeast Corridor), seats in the quiet cars are first-come, first-serve.

Another option is to purchase a business class seat for more exclusivity.

Is Amtrak safe at night?

It’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, but like during the daytime, Amtrak employs its own security and police staff at night. The onboard staff can also address security concerns.

If you plan to sleep while on the train, be sure to protect your belongings and keep them near you as an added precaution.

On some trains, sleeper bunks or private cabins are an option and can provide more privacy and security.

Is there security at train stations?

Unlike at airports, there is usually no security check before boarding the train. This can be disconcerting for some, since it means there is no one reviewing what travelers bring aboard.

While Amtrak does prohibit certain items in carry-on bags aboard its trains, there’s generally no way to verify that passengers aren’t bringing them on the train. This means that your best chance of safety is being aware of your surroundings and reaching out to train staff if you notice something that feels off or worrying.

Amtrak safety, recapped

Generally speaking, Amtrak is a safe travel option. But, it’s wise to use good judgment and remain fully aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on personal belongings, and don’t hesitate to reach out to staff if you notice something out of the ordinary.

Delays, cancellations, lost baggage, or medical emergencies can turn an eagerly-awaited trip into a stressful experience. It is where travel insurance steps in, offering a safety net against unforeseen adversities. As one of the most popular train services in the U.S., Amtrak facilitates travel and provides its own travel insurance option. But is Amtrak’s travel insurance truly worth it? In this in-depth review, we’ll dissect what Amtrak offers, what it covers, and weigh its pros and cons to help you make an informed decision. Whether you’re a frequent Amtrak traveler or considering it for an upcoming journey, this guide is tailored for you.

amtrak travel insurance

Amtrak’s travel insurance offers financial protection, convenience, and peace of mind. It’s a testament to Amtrak’s commitment to ensuring passengers have a smooth and worry-free journey from start to finish.

What is Amtrak Travel Insurance?

Amtrak, the renowned national rail service in the U.S., continues beyond transporting passengers from one destination to another. They also offer their travelers an extra layer of protection through travel insurance. Designed to cater to the specific nuances and potential challenges of rail travel, Amtrak’s travel insurance aims to safeguard passengers from unexpected events that might disrupt their journey.

At its core, Amtrak Travel Insurance is a policy that passengers can opt for when booking their train tickets. This insurance is intended to cover various unforeseen events affecting a traveler’s trip, from minor inconveniences to more severe disruptions. Amtrak’s insurance seeks to provide compensation or assistance, whether it’s a sudden trip cancellation, an unexpected delay causing a missed connection, lost or delayed luggage, or even medical emergencies that arise during travel.

But what differentiates Amtrak’s policy from generic travel insurance plans is its specialization for train travel. Given that traveling by train comes with its own set of potential issues and challenges different from air or road travel, Amtrak’s insurance aims to offer solutions tailored to these unique challenges. That ensures that passengers can embark on their journey with peace of mind, knowing they have a safety net designed explicitly for rail travel.

Key Features of Amtrak Travel Insurance

Navigating the world of travel insurance can often be daunting with its jargon and varied offerings. However, understanding the key features can make the decision-making process more straightforward. Let’s dive deep into the primary components of Amtrak’s travel insurance:

  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage : This feature ensures that if a traveler has to cancel or cut their journey short due to covered reasons (like illness, severe weather, or family emergencies), they can get reimbursement for the non-refundable portions of their ticket.
  • Lost or Delayed Baggage Protection : Rail travel doesn’t eliminate the chances of luggage mishaps. Suppose a passenger’s baggage gets lost, damaged, or delayed. In that case, Amtrak’s travel insurance offers compensation to cover the cost of personal belongings or the essentials that must be purchased while waiting for delayed baggage.
  • Medical Emergency Coverage : Health uncertainties can strike anywhere, anytime. Amtrak’s policy covers medical expenses incurred during emergencies. At the same time, on the trip, ensuring travelers don’t face hefty medical bills in unfamiliar territories.
  • Evacuation Services : In the rare case that a medical emergency requires evacuation, whether, by air or ground, this feature covers the associated costs, providing a lifeline in critical situations.
  • Travel Delays and Missed Connections : Delays can sometimes be inevitable, given the vast network of railroads and the challenges they face. Suppose a passenger misses a connecting train for reasons covered under the policy. In that case, the insurance can cover the additional costs incurred in catching up with their itinerary.
  • 24/7 Assistance Services : Emergencies don’t follow a timetable. Recognizing this, Amtrak offers round-the-clock assistance services. Whether it’s a medical referral, travel-related advice, or assistance with lost documents, a dedicated helpline ensures that travelers are never alone in their time of need.

Benefits of Amtrak Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is more than just a policy; it’s a safety net for unforeseen situations. Let’s delve into the advantages of opting for Amtrak’s travel insurance:

  • Tailored for Train Travel : Amtrak’s insurance is specifically designed for the nuances of rail travel. While most travel insurances have a one-size-fits-all approach, Amtrak understands the unique challenges of train journeys and offers coverages that cater directly to them.
  • Financial Security : One of the most significant advantages is the potential savings. With coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and medical emergencies, passengers can avoid the financial strain of unforeseen events.
  • Convenience : Purchasing Amtrak’s travel insurance during ticket booking streamlines the process, eliminating the need for a third party. This integrated approach ensures that all details align perfectly with the travel itinerary.
  • Comprehensive Coverage : Amtrak’s policy covers many potential disruptions, from lost luggage to missed connections. That ensures that travelers are protected from multiple angles.
  • 24/7 Assistance : Knowing that assistance is just a phone call away, regardless of the time zone or hour, can be immensely reassuring. Amtrak’s round-the-clock helpline ensures travelers have support whenever they need it.
  • Peace of Mind : Beyond the tangible benefits, there’s an invaluable sense of security. Travelers can embark on their journey without stress, knowing they’re covered for various eventualities.
  • Flexible Options : Amtrak often provides different tiers or types of coverage, allowing passengers to choose a plan best suited to their needs and travel plans.
  • Efficient Claim Process : A user-friendly and efficient claims process means passengers can expect swift resolutions and reimbursements, minimizing disruptions to their plans.

Potential Drawbacks of Amtrak Travel Insurance

While Amtrak’s travel insurance offers many benefits, it’s essential to understand its potential limitations to make an informed choice. Let’s discuss some of the potential drawbacks:

  • Limited Customization : Amtrak’s insurance might offer a different level of customization than specialized travel insurance providers. It could mean some travelers need help finding coverage for specific needs or preferences.
  • Cost Effectiveness : For shorter or less expensive journeys, the insurance cost might outweigh the potential benefits, making it less cost-effective for some travelers.
  • Coverage Caps : Like all insurance policies, Amtrak’s travel insurance will have limits on coverage amounts. Depending on the severity of the situation, these caps might sometimes need to be improved.
  • Exclusions : Not all reasons for trip cancellations or delays might be covered. Standard exclusions often include pre-existing medical conditions, civil unrest, or certain natural disasters. It’s vital to read the fine print and understand these exclusions.
  • Deductibles : There might be deductibles in place, which means travelers would have to cover a particular portion of the costs out of pocket before the insurance kicks in.
  • Third-party Issues : If disruptions are caused due to a third party (like a hotel or airline), Amtrak’s insurance might not cover these, leaving travelers to deal with these entities directly.
  • Documentation Requirements : Filing a claim often requires substantial documentation, which can sometimes be cumbersome. Missing or inadequate documentation might lead to claim denials.
  • Competitive Offerings : Some standalone travel insurance providers might offer more comprehensive plans or better rates, potentially giving travelers better options outside Amtrak’s offerings.

Best Alternatives to Amtrak Travel Insurance

The travel insurance market is vast, and while Amtrak’s offering is tailored for rail journeys, several other providers are worth considering. Here are five top alternatives that travelers can explore:

Allianz Global Assistance:

  • Overview : A global leader in travel insurance, Allianz offers a range of plans suitable for various types of trips, including short getaways, extended vacations, and even yearly multi-trip policies.

  • Key Features : Comprehensive comparison tool, ‘cancel for any reason policies, and detailed reviews from other travelers.
  • Why Consider : Their platform provides the convenience of comparing multiple policies side-by-side, ensuring travelers can find the best deal that fits their needs.

Amtrak Travel Insurance offers a tailored solution for train travelers, encompassing key aspects such as trip cancellation, interruptions, and medical emergencies. It provides the convenience of being directly linked to the Amtrak booking process. It offers specific features aligned with rail travel.

The benefits of Amtrak’s insurance are undeniable, with 24/7 assistance, comprehensive coverage, and a user-friendly claim process being standout points. However, these benefits have potential drawbacks. Limited customization, coverage caps, and exclusions might leave some travelers seeking more specialized or flexible options.

In the context of short trips or situations where the cost outweighs the benefits, travelers may find the policy less appealing. Additionally, alternative providers in the market offer varying degrees of coverage and customization, potentially delivering better value for some.

The ultimate worth of Amtrak Travel Insurance will depend on individual preferences, travel plans, budget, and the importance placed on peace of mind during travel. It may be the perfect fit for a worry-free train journey for some. In contrast, others prefer exploring alternative providers for a more customized solution.

Amtrak Travel Insurance offers solid coverage for most train travelers but may only suit some. Careful consideration of both the benefits and potential drawbacks and a comparison with other market offerings will lead to an informed decision tailored to individual travel needs.

Is Amtrak Travel Protection Worth It? A Comprehensive Review

Is Amtrak Travel Protection worth it? The answer is, it depends on your specific needs. Here are some factors to consider before making a decision:

  • Coverage : Amtrak Travel Protection covers trip cancellations, interruptions, delays, baggage loss or damage, and emergency medical expenses. However, it’s essential to read the fine print to understand what exactly is covered and what is not. For instance, the policy may not cover pre-existing medical conditions or extreme sports injuries. Make sure to read the policy carefully before purchasing it.
  • Cost : The cost of Amtrak Travel Protection varies depending on the length and cost of your trip, your age, and the level of coverage you choose. It’s essential to compare the cost of the policy with the potential financial loss you may incur if you don’t purchase it. If you’re traveling on a budget, it may not be worth it to purchase the policy.
  • Peace of mind : Amtrak Travel Protection offers peace of mind, knowing that you’re covered in case of an emergency. If you’re traveling to a remote location or have a history of medical issues, the policy may be worth it to ensure that you’re protected.
  • Customer service : The customer service provided by Amtrak Travel Protection is an essential factor to consider. Some customers have reported difficulties in filing claims and dealing with unhelpful representatives. However, others have had positive experiences with the customer service team. It’s essential to read reviews and do your research before purchasing the policy.

In conclusion, whether Amtrak Travel Protection is worth it depends on your specific needs and circumstances. Consider the factors mentioned above before making a decision.

However, some tickets may have different cancellation policies, so make sure to read the terms and conditions carefully before booking.
  • Credit Card Travel Benefits : Some credit cards offer travel benefits, such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage delay insurance, and rental car insurance. Check with your credit card company to see if you already have travel protection and what it covers.

Traveling Amtrak For The First Time? Here Are 14 Things To Know About Amtrak Trains

F eel the need to go outside New York City? Confused about which ride to select? Forget going to out-of-the-way airports or using crowded taxi services. The Amtrak train offers the ultimate solution to meet everyone's travel needs. Meet the luxurious train that makes passengers feel like they're at home. The endless amenities and friendly, respectful staff also make one's trip memorable.

Many Amtrak trains successfully run across hundreds of tracks in the United States (most Amtrak trains offer incredibly beautiful routes , too), and there's also a rich history behind the company. Multiple packages are available for every type of passenger, depending on budget, accommodation choice, and other factors. For a pleasant change, the Amtrak company charges no extra fees, i.e., passengers get what they see, unlike some airliners who keep adding extra surcharges to a customer's expense list till the last moment.

Related: Empire Builder: What Makes This Amtrak Route One Of The Most Scenic In The U.S.

Furthermore, passengers get extra legroom for a long journey compared to a car or air travel. The Amtrak also saves on fuel and protects one's personal vehicle from wear and tear if one uses it to travel. So, with that in mind, let's skim through some important things travelers should know about the trains, such as Amtrak train routes and prices, etc.

UPDATE: 2023/06/06 21:47 EST BY REENA JAIN

More Things To Know About Amtrak Trains For First Time Travelers

Everyone should be aware of a few things before embarking on their first Amtrak journey, regardless of the destination or length of the journey. This list has been updated with additional important information, including train routes, prices, schedules, destinations, and more to help travelers have a stress-free, relaxing, and enjoyable Amtrak journey.

The Amtrak App

The Amtrak app makes it simple for travelers to plan and reserve their trips, check Amtrak schedules and destinations, and receive real-time alerts for delays or changes. Users can access their e-tickets through the app, which provides information on Amtrak train routes and prices. Additionally, the app includes interactive maps that help passengers track the whereabouts of the train and get knowledge of the schedule. The Amtrak app has a user-friendly interface and convenient features, making train travel more simple, reliable, and enjoyable.

Expect Train Delays

Amtrak trains need to stop at some places to let large freight trains pass because they share the same tracks. It can result in unforeseen delays in travel times, especially on longer, cross-country routes. For instance, the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver may need to stop before the Moffat Tunnel to allow a freight train to pass, delaying Amtrak schedules. Therefore, researching Amtrak schedules and destinations is beneficial before making travel plans.

Making A Pre-Departure Checklist Is Helpful

Passengers will require a number of items, including those necessary and desirable for a stress-free and memorable Amtrak trip. Some of these—like an ID—are necessary, while others are worthwhile for an enjoyable Amtrak journey.

Identification

Passengers must have a photo ID or passport with them.

Train Tickets

Passengers should have hard copies of their tickets or electronic copies of their tickets on hand.

Travel insurance

It's essential to protect oneself from unanticipated travel mishaps.

Passengers who will need to take any medication while traveling must bring it with them.

Other Essentials

Personal care items, snacks, beverages, books, and some forms of entertainment are desirable (but not necessary) for a comfortable trip, particularly on long Amtrak routes.

Stations Have Different Stopover Times

The train makes scheduled stops at various stations during a trip, and the stopover time varies depending on the type of station. If a station is a rest stop, the stopover time is comparatively longer than that of a passenger drop-off and pick-up location. Knowing if a specific stop is a designated rest stop where passengers are permitted to disembark is preferable for those who want to smoke because smoking is not permitted on the train or simply want to move around the station.

Reasonable Ticket Prices

Amtrak tickets are reasonably priced! The average price of a ticket from New York to Atlantic City is about $94 (although Amtrak's famous roomettes typically cost much more ). It is pretty budget-friendly compared to any airline fare on the same route, and it is not even the lowest price out there. The cheapest tickets on this Amtrak route can even be found for only $82.

The best thing is to avoid rush hour and book your Amtrak tickets well in advance. Plus, a cool tip: Amtrak offers saver fares on each route, where passengers can save up to 20% compared to the standard Coach fare when booked at least 7 days in advance. Furthermore, Amtrak fares for seniors (aged 65 and up) are 10% less than the standard fare on most trains in the United States, and seniors (aged 60 and up) pay 10% less for cross-border services operated by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Plenty Dining Choices

Amtrak offers many dining choices to its customers. There is something tasty and appetizing for every passenger, from adults to kids. Some of these main options include:

Passengers can access the café, which is open to passengers from all classes of the train from the early morning until late at night. Whether business or economy class, there are snacks, drinks, and food items for everyone.

  • Traditional Dining

Traditional dining service for passengers in private rooms is provided in the dining car as a complimentary exclusive offering.

  • Flexible Dining

Exclusive offer to First Class passengers to eat at flexible timings. Special diet menus are also available at Amtrak for customers with specific dietary requirements. The food menu comes with a detailed calorie breakdown as well.

A Variety Of Accommodations

The Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City offers various services and accommodations. Among the expert tips for first-time Amtrak passengers is to check the various room options available in order to best fit the needs and budget of a passenger.

  • Seating Options

Even the Coach class has the best comfy seats. Imagine reclining sofa-like seats with spacious areas. The addition of multiple amenities combines to make the trip a relaxing one! For passengers with mobility impairments, Amtrak provides accessible seating arrangements.

  • Private Rooms

Amtrak provides a unique luxurious experience to its passengers by offering private rooms to First Class. If one wants privacy and their own space on a short trip with added comfort, then a private room booking is the perfect step.

Wi-Fi On Board

The Amtrak train comes with complimentary Wi-Fi during traveling. The speed of Amtrak Wi-Fi is less than a passenger’s home or work Wi-Fi network. Furthermore, the same Wi-Fi gets shared by all the passengers on the Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City. So, each passenger should try to surf the internet in such a limited way as not to overburden the network for the other onboard users.

The key is not downloading large files or streaming heavy videos online and keeping fellow passengers in mind while using the shared Wi-Fi. That is why limited access is provided by Amtrak so that more onboard bandwidth is available to all passengers. Access to websites with objectionable content is also restricted in this shared onboard Wi-Fi.

Onboard Upgrades

The trains are divided into classes: Coach, Business, and First Class. All these classes differ from each other, with a different set of rates and amenities for each of them. So, if space is available as unoccupied in a class, one can upgrade from one's original class to that higher class seating. It can be from Coach to Business or Business to First Class.

This smart feature can change the outlook of one's whole journey. Passengers only need to speak to the conductor onboard. They might inform about the availability of such an upgrade and let passengers purchase a new class seat.

Passengers Can Bring A Bicycle Along

Amtrak offers its customers the opportunity to bring their bicycles along. One can explore the stops along the way during a train journey - and what better way to do that than by bike? Ride the rails on board the train with a bike - sounds awesome! Amtrak offers several different services to transport a customer’s bike onboard.

Remember, though, that each train has different equipment and loading procedures that decide what service will be offered. The starting and ending destination stations also determine how or what is allowed by Amtrak regarding one's bicycle. For carry-on/train side, bicycles up to 50 lbs are allowed. Here, standard bicycle sizes apply with a maximum tire width of 2 inches.

Enjoy Guest Rewards

Amtrak offers a guest rewards system to its customers . The points earned can be used to travel on trains, stay at hotels, and shop.

  • Earning Points

Customers can earn guest rewards by earning points through various means, both on and off the train. Passengers can earn 2 points for every $1 spent.

  • Redeeming the Points

Customer of Amtrak can easily redeem their earned points. The reward travel begins at just 800 points, with train travel allowed to over 500 destinations.

  • Member Benefits

Becoming an Amtrak member rewards customers for every ride on and off the train.

  • Bonus Points

One can earn 20,000 bonus points with the new Amtrak Guest Rewards® Preferred Mastercard®. Customers can even choose from over 350,000 hotels worldwide to stay at using their collected points.

Passengers Can Bring Pets

Pets are allowed to travel on Amtrak. However, like with air travel, there are restrictions. Dogs and cats can come on trips that can take up to seven hours on most Amtrak routes in a pet carrier - of course, for a small fee. The pet carrier must also be spacious and highly ventilated, allowing for free movement of the animal, and the weight of the pet and carrier combined must be under 20 lbs.

Things to Note About Pets on Amtrak Trains

  • Service animals are readily welcomed on all Amtrak services as they are not included in the pet category.
  • Pets are not allowed to travel as baggage. A pet must travel with its human counterpart on a train.
  • Only dogs and cats are allowed to travel as pets on Amtrak, and pets must be at least eight weeks old and up to date on all vaccinations.
  • Amtrak highly recommends making pet reservations in advance of one's trip.

Baggage Limits

With Amtrak, customers can shed their baggage worries as the company handles everything meticulously. As baggage, a customer may bring 2 carry-on items. Here, limitations apply regarding weight and size. So, browse them beforehand. Checking this guide on what to pack for an Amtrak train ride may also be handy in terms of prioritizing what to bring (and what not to bring to save baggage weight and space).

Similarly, for checked luggage, each traveler can bring 4 bags, 2 are registered as free, and the other 2 are at $20 per bag. Again, size/weight limitations apply. For special items of baggage that require special handling or are outside the normal baggage category, Amtrak may ask for additional packing requirements and service fees. Amtrak also prohibits certain items onboard trains for security purposes.

Going with unreserved seating on a packed train? No worries. Travelers can find a Red Cap (baggage porter) to escort them to the train. They can access the track before the masses and carry their bags. Red Cap services are free, but a generous tip is recommended.

No Security Line No Waiting

Amtrak lets passengers simply go to the track and get on the train. There is no security line blockage as there is at the airport. With a reduction in airport TSA staff and more passengers flying, travelers need to get to the airport about two hours before their flight just to have enough time to check in or check a bag and clear security.

With Amtrak travel, one's ticket might be scanned before entering the platform or scanned onboard, but there is no waiting line. On the other hand, Amtrak recommends arriving 30 minutes before one's train departs.

I'm a financial planner, and I'd recommend annual travel insurance to anyone who loves to travel abroad

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Frequent and spontaneous travelers will likely benefit from annual travel insurance policies.
  • Your credit card may come with some travel protections, but it may not be enough.
  • When choosing a policy, look at what it covers, not just what's cheapest.

Insider Today

Summer is just a few months away — and if you're planning a vacation this year, the last thing you want is an unexpected event to derail your plans (and cost you hundreds).

Flights get delayed or canceled constantly. Luggage disappears into the ether. Medical emergencies occur in remote destinations. Yet many jetsetters simply cross their fingers and hope for the best rather than prepare for the worst.

That's why, as a financial planner, I believe it's crucial to consider protecting your trips with the right insurance coverage. One option often overlooked, particularly by frequent travelers, is annual travel insurance .

Annual travel insurance covers all your trips within 365 days. Unlike stand-alone travel insurance, which only covers you for a specific trip, an annual policy covers any trips you take within the year.

That's why I tell clients who travel frequently that an annual policy is a good choice for their needs. By opting for an annual plan, you don't have to go through the hassle of booking multiple policies and potentially save money compared to purchasing individual trip coverage. Here's how it works.

What to look for in a policy

While specifics may vary depending on the insurer and plan tier, most include the following key benefits:

  • Trip cancellations or interruptions: You may be able to get reimbursed for expenses (even nonrefundable ones!) related to an illness, injury, or natural disaster that forced you to cancel or cut your trip short.
  • Emergency medical and dental care: If you fall ill or get injured while traveling, your insurance can help cover the cost of medical treatment.
  • Emergency evacuation: In a serious medical emergency or security situation, your policy will arrange and pay for transportation to a hospital or back to your home country.
  • Lost, delayed, or damaged baggage: If your luggage is lost, delayed, or damaged during your trip, you can get financial coverage for essential items while you wait for your stuff to be recovered or replaced.
  • Trip delays and missed connections: When your travel plans are disrupted due to issues like mechanical problems or severe weather, you may get reimbursement for additional expenses incurred, like meals, lodging, and transportation.

It's important to note that annual travel insurance plans have limitations. Certain high-risk activities, pre-existing medical conditions, and travel to specific regions may be restricted or require additional coverage.

Some travelers may assume that their credit card's built-in travel protections are enough. While many travel rewards credit cards offer perks like rental car insurance, trip cancellation, and baggage reimbursement, the coverage limits are often much lower than a dedicated annual travel insurance plan.

Credit card coverage for emergency medical care is also particularly limited — capped at a few thousand dollars — which may not be enough in the face of a major international medical emergency.

How much travel justifies an annual plan?

For the occasional traveler who takes one or two trips a year, single-trip policies will probably work for you. But if you fall into any of these buckets, you may want to consider an annual policy:

  • Regular international travelers (three or more trips abroad yearly)
  • Road warriors frequently away for work
  • Adventurers engaging in high-risk activities like heli-skiing, scuba diving, or mountain climbing
  • Cruisers and tour group travelers
  • Students or retirees taking extended trips throughout the year
  • Those visiting developing countries with limited medical care

Annual plans cover all of your trips within a 365-day period after purchasing. They're basically a bundle of multiple policies into one package deal. This means you only have to buy one policy to manage, locking in your coverage for the year.

How to decide if an annual policy makes sense for you

Start by reviewing your travel plans this year — and your risk tolerance. Calculate how much buying individual travel insurance policies would cost you over the next year and compare it to the price of an annual plan.

Don't just focus on the premium — carefully evaluate coverage limits, exclusions, and deductibles to ensure you have enough protection for your needs.

An annual policy gives you the flexibility to take spontaneous trips without the hassle of obtaining last-minute insurance. More importantly, it provides peace of mind, knowing that you're covered for a wide range of travel disruptions and emergencies.

As the busy summer travel season ramps up, definitely explore protecting your trips with insurance, especially if you're jetting off internationally. Spending hours on the phone trying to rebook canceled flights or worrying about affording an overseas medical emergency is no way to vacation.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost.

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip. However, the plan costs will vary depending on how many travelers are covered, their ages, how long the trip is, the travel insurance company and plan you choose, plus any upgrades you include.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .
