Klah ah men

Lund (Klah ah men) is a small, picturesque community located at the north end of BC’s Sunshine Coast, on the traditional and unceded territory of the Tla’amin, Klahoose, and Homalco First Nations. It’s known as the “End of the Road” due to its location at Mile 0 of Highway 101, which is part of one of the longest highway networks in the world, running along the coast from Canada to Chile.

Approximately 1,250 people live in the wider Lund area, which is part of the qathet Regional District. This seaside village is the epitome of small-town vibes and plays host to boaters on their way to Desolation Sound, road trippers reaching the terminus of Highway 101, and those who come just to buy a famous blackberry cinnamon bun or a Pollen sweater.

Lund & Desolation Sound, BC

Click the "play" button to get a glimpse of life in Lund & Desolation Sound.

Things to Do

Getting out on the water is a must in Lund—it’s the gateway to beautiful  Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park . This area is a boater’s paradise, offering spectacular views, calm waters, and plenty of coastline and islands to check out. There are three major anchorages in the marine park, including Prideaux Haven, Tenedo’s Bay, and Grace Harbour. Boaters can also check out Malaspina Inlet, Homfray Channel, Okeover Inlet,  Copeland Islands Marine Provincial Park , and  Savary Island . For those who don’t own their own boat, there are a variety of tours and charters available.

Exploring by  kayak  is another great way to see the area. Operators in the area offer guided tours that take you to places such as Desolation Sound, Savary Island, and Toba Inlet, and there are day tours, sunset tours, and multi-day tours available. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as seabirds, dolphins, and sea lions.

Looking for more? Purchase a  fishing license  and cast a line, or head out to go  scuba diving —the underwater visibility is excellent, and there’s an abundance of sea life in the area. You can also jump in a water taxi and spend a few days enjoying beautiful Savary Island or Cortes Island, or take a water taxi or boat to a drop-off spot at the beginning of the  Sunshine Coast Trail . This 180-kilometre trail starts (or ends) at Sarah Point, just 12 kilometres north of Lund. There are several access points and tributaries along the trail, making it easy to tackle parts of the trail for day hikes or shorter overnight treks.

Lund has a handful of unique shopping opportunities that shouldn’t be missed. Pollen Sweaters sells made-in-Lund pure wool sweaters and hats that you’ll definitely spot on a number of locals. The Tug-Guhm Gallery Studio features art from more than 50 local artists and is a great spot to pick up some unique artwork. Rare Earth Pottery creates functional and sculptural raku and wood-fired clay art, and the Stockpile Market sells a selection of souvenirs, groceries, and alcoholic beverages.

Where to Stay

There are a variety of  accommodations  available in Lund and the surrounding area. The Lund Resort at Klah Ah Men (closed for the 2022 season) and  Klahoose Wilderness Resort  (located in Homfray Channel) are Indigenous-owned accommodations that offer a more culturally immersive experience.  Additional options include the  Desolation Sound Resort ,  SunLund RV Park & Cabins , myriad bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals.

Moorage is available at the 13 Moons Marina and Lund Public Marina. Marine access-only campsites are available in the Marine Provincial Parks (Desolation Sound, Copeland Islands, and  Malaspina ), and vehicle-accessible camping is available at  Okeover Arm Provincial Park .

Food & Drink

There are a handful of restaurant options in Lund. Check out  The Boardwalk Restaurant ,  Laughing Oyster Restaurant , and the 101 Bar & Grill. Nancy’s Bakery Café is known for its blackberry cinnamon buns and fresh baked goods, in addition to a varied breakfast and lunch menu. And the Stockpile Market is the place to go for groceries and a variety of ready-to-eat meal options.

Don’t miss the annual Lund Shellfish Festival in May. It’s a homage to local seafood that includes vendors serving up fresh seafood, live music, local artisans and crafters, and restaurant specials.

Other  events  include live music at local restaurants, artist exhibitions and programming at the Tidal Art Centre, and more.

Welcome to the Shellfish Capital

Of the sunshine coast.

The picturesque seaside village of Lund, BC is located on the west coast of Canada, 128km north of Vancouver, on Canada's Sunshine Coast.

With about three hundred year-round residents the population swells in the heat of summer as visitors arrive to enjoy Lund's charm. Lund is the gateway to Desolation Sound Provincial Park, the Copeland Islands, Okeover Inlet, Savary Island, and the Sunshine Coast Trail.

Sarah Point, 12km north of Lund, is the start of the 180km long Sunshine Coast Trail which ends in Saltery Bay. With several access points and tributaries along this route, this scenic trail offers easy day hikes and free hut-to-hut hiking for overnight treks.

North of Lund Harbour, the pristine Copeland Islands Marine Park (aka Ragged Islands) hugs the shoreline towards world-renowned Desolation Sound. Another route to Desolation Sound is along Okeover Inlet past the oyster farms and through Malaspina Inlet. Both popular waterways are happily shared by sport fishers, pleasure boaters, kayakers and avid scuba divers who enjoy the excellent underwater visibility and abundant sea life.

Sightseeing boats and kayak tour operators offer easy access to the area's ocean playground to experience curious seasonal sealions, seals, dolphins, humpback whales, and pods of orca whales.

A FRONT-ROW SEAT TO ONE OF THE WHITEWATER WONDERS OF THE WORLD

Hop aboard our craft and experience the raw power and beauty of the world-famous skookumchuck narrows. ride into the heart of the action in the same vessel trusted by the canadian coast guard for a truly one-of-a-kind adventure. not all touring boats are able to safely get this close to ‘the skook.’ , why visit skookumchuck narrows (sechelt rapids)  .

The naturally occurring phenomenon is created when up to 200 billion gallons of water is forced through the narrow ocean passageway each day to form one of the fastest tidal currents in the world. At its strongest, Skookumchuck currents can reach 30 km/hr (16 knots) and vary as much as 3 metres (9 ft) on either side. This is rivalled only by Vancouver Island’s Nakwakto Rapids, and Norway’s Saltstraumen. You’re truly experiencing one of the great natural wonders of the world.

ONE HOUR TOURS

Go beyond Skookumchuck Narrows for the locals experience. Tour the highlights of the area to view Seal Rock, Hidden Lagoon, East Point Island, ancient Indigenous paintings, and the stunning 444-metre drop of Friel Falls (Harmony Falls).

PRIVATE TOURS

Looking for a special experience for your group outing, family reunion or corporate retreat? There’s so much to show you in Skookumchuck Narrows and Jervis Inlet.

Princess Louisa Inlet – Chatterbox Falls

Beautiful in every season, in every weather condition..

A the head of Princess Louisa Inlet, famous Chatterbox Falls is the ULTIMATE tour destination. “ Amazing! … Awesome! … Tremendous! ” These are only a few of the words used by people who have experienced it. You have to visit and feel it to truly understand. Steep glacial carved walls of granite rise out of what is often mirror calm water. The enclosure is surreal.

There are 3 parts to your tour day. First: the tour

You’re on the boat about 2 hours. Enjoy the ride like you would a show. As you wind your way through the remote areas of Jervis Inlet our commentary highlights many of the features of this magnificent fjord. Be patient and let the operator tell the stories.  All the major points will be mentioned in the spots where you’re best positioned to see them.

Pass through Malibu Rapids into Princess Louisa Inlet. It’s not a navigational obstacle for your professional operator. Run the length of Princess Louisa Inlet. Glacial action carved these steep sided fjords. Sheer granite walls rise from the ocean to plateau areas 5000 feet above. When it rains there are countless waterfalls cascading down. Each passing weather system causes major changes to the look of the Inlets.

Second : Free time ashore.

Enjoy free time in Princess Louisa Marine Park, right beside world famous Chatterbox Falls. It’s a small area so you have time to walk around the park and savour the lunch you brought. It’s also the prime time to talk more with your operator. They need to stay near the boat so go to the dock and use this time to ask all your questions.

Walking in Princess Louisa Marine Park is limited. The loop around the Park is about 500 m (1/3 mile) and flat. There are picnic sites and a covered, open sided shelter. Enjoy the access to the sandy beach.

Going to swim? The water is always “fresh”. For your safety we recommend swimming from the beach. We always discourage swimming from a busy dock area.

Third: Transport back to Egmont

This is direct, without stops or diversions. It’s another good time to interact with the operator and talk about areas of special interest for you. The trip home takes about 90 minutes; a straight run without planned commentary.

Ticket sales are available daily through much of the year. We recommend booking to confirm your reservation. Charters are always possible.

> Check Availability

On Saturday June 22 2024 we have a special evening tour scheduled, to celebrate the summer solstice. It’s the same program with a special departure time so you can get a unique view of the Inlet in the late afternoon / evening.  BOOK NOW   for Princess Louisa Inlet Evening Special.

5 Hour Tour (10:30AM – 3:30PM)

Tours depart from the Backeddy Marina:  16660 Backeddy Rd, Egmont, BC  and are available year round. Winter is a fabulous time to make this trip. In low season when there are no schedules with ticket sales available consider a charter.

Group departures can be arranged to suit any schedule. Call toll free to 1-800-870-9055 to ask about making special arrangements.

Adults: $185.00 + 9.25 (5% GST) Youth: (under 12) $125.00 + 6.25  (5% GST) Book Princess Louisa Inlet tour tickets

What to Expect

Tours depart from the Backeddy Marina at 10:30 am (it’s not essential but we recommend that you overnight on the Sechelt Peninsula; 2 nights is even better.) On this tour you can marvel at the large landscapes, waterfalls, native pictographs, glaciers, and early settlement areas. The boat operator will comment on the most interesting features of Jervis Inlet. We touch on the history, geography and current events. This is the highlight for a lot of passengers. There are so many interesting things to see in the 30 mile trip! Don’t try to pay attention to everything. Pick out what fascinates you. Relax and enjoy yourself.

At the entrance to Princess Louisa Inlet we pass through Malibu Rapids. This narrow channel was overlooked by the first European explorer. The shallow channel restricts water flow so extreme currents develop during large tidal exchanges. It’s no problem for our fast planing hull boats and capable operators. Inside Princess Louisa Inlet everything seems to get bigger, steeper and grander. When you go ashore in the Provincial Park, relax and enjoy free time to explore. There is a dock and short 500 meter (1/3 mile) round trip walking trail that gives you easy access to the base of the legendary Chatterbox Falls. There is also a picnic area (we recommend you bring a lunch) and outhouses.

Our tour boats are classified “Small Passenger Vessels” by Transport Canada. For passenger comfort on a long day like this we use boats with cabins and inside seating. The back deck area is open for unrestricted viewing.

What to Bring

  • Packed Lunch for picnic at the Provincial Park.
  • Light sweater and or rainwear.
  • Camera (and protective case/bag).
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses and / or sunhat.
  • Comfortable footwear is recommended. Soft-soled shoes are best.
