La Bombonera

La Bombonera

Club: CA Boca Juniors | Opening: 1940 | Capacity: 49,000

History and description

La Bombonera was built between 1938 and 1940, and, as the legend goes, received its name because the architect suddenly realised the similarities between the stadium and a chocolate (bombon) he was eating.

Boca Juniors had already played at the site since 1924, which was until then a rather simple wooden stadium. After Boca bought the land in 1931, it therefore started making plans to build a new concrete stadium that could hold 100,000 fans.

La Bombonera officially opened on the 25th of May 1940 with a friendly between Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo (2-0), though it took until the end of 1941 for the second tier to be completed. A third tier was finally constructed between 1951 and 1953.

La Bombonera at that time had stands on three sides. The fourth side was left open with just a few VIP boxes and an obelisk, which was because of a lack of space due to the residential buildings just across the street.

Boca Juniors almost moved to a new 140,000-stadium in the 1970s, but political and economical turmoil ended the construction that had just begun.

In 1986, the stadium got named Estadio Alberto J. Armando in honour of the former iconic club president, but most fans have kept referring to the stadium as La Bombonera.

In 1996, the VIP boxes and obelisk on the open site were replaced by a small stand that was higher than the previous one, but again mainly consisted of VIP boxes.

Boca Juniors currently has plans to build a new stadium almost adjacent to La Bombonera, with a capacity of 75,000 seats divided over two tiers. La Bombonera will not get demolished though, but used for other purposes. Plans are still in preliminary stages.

How to get to La Bombonera

La Bombonera is located south of Buenos Aires’ city centre (Microcentro), at less than 4 kilometres from the Plaza de Mayo and 2 kilometres from popular nightlife area San Telmo.

La Bombonera is hard to access by car and it is advised to either take a taxi or go by public transport.

The stadium has no metro station in the vicinity, though the walk from the San Telmo area should take no more than half an hour.

There are also many buses (colectivos) that pass close to the stadium, of which most also cross the city centre (microcentro). Take one of the following colectivos in southern direction: 10, 20, 22, 24, 25, 29, 33, 39, 46, 53, 54, 64, 70, 74, 86, 93, 102, 129, 130, 152, 159, 168, or 186.

Address: Brandsen 805, Capital Federal

Eat, drink, and sleep near La Bombonera

La Bombonera lies in the middle of the working-class La Boca area, which has a slightly negative reputation in terms of safety, and therefore care should be taken at night. During the day, however, the area around the stadium is reasonably safe as it is located adjacent to the famous and touristy Caminito de la Boca with its coloured artist houses.

There are various restaurants and bars around the Caminito de la Boca, but the San Telmo area toward the north may be a better alternative, especially at night. Most of the places are in the area around Plaza Dorrego. From there it is less than 30 minutes walking to the stadium.

There are few hotels near La Bombonera, but plenty of options in the San Telmo area. Some of the best-rated, but also more expensive, options include Tiana Hotel Boutique , Telmho Hotel Boutique , Bohemia Hotel , and Hotel Babel . Expect to pay between US$ 60.00 and US$110.00.

Cheaper and more basic options include Hotel Carly , Hotel Chipre , and Hotel Casablanca . There are also many hostels in the San Telmo area. For an overview, click here .

Boca Juniors Tickets

Boca Juniors has stopped selling tickets to the general public and currently only allows club members to enter the stadium.

Tourists can make use of the many ticket agencies that offer packages, which however go for highly inflated prices.

There were two Boca games during my visit. To be on a safe side I bought a ticket for game in Copa Libertadores against Tolima from an agency. It was expensive( USD160), but was quarenteed and included transport, food and drinks. The other game I was trying to buy a ticket myself but that did not work so I missed out. I found a guy on Facebook who was selling them and was going to meet him on the day of the match to collect tickets. He never showed up( there were another 10 people waiting). Walk from metro station to the stadium is not the easiest one, but you can get a very cheap taxi. The stadium is very unique. Atmosphere is always nice, but I would say it is overrated since so many tourist come there.

I went to Batistuta’s last game for Boca Junios v San Lorenzo in 1991. In those days you could just walk up and pay to get in. I was stood behind the goal. San Lorenzo fans were on a tier above. A continuous torrent of spit from above endured throughout the game but also thrown down was a car tyre and, no kidding, a shopping trolley! It was quite an experience. Boca lost 1-0.

An absolutely amazing staduim to visit. I visited in April to watch Boca v Nuevo Chicago ( 0-0 ). Brilliant atmosphere from start to finish. We bought tickets from an organised tour group, we met at a bar in San Telmo they provide a few beers and some food and then provide a small coach to La Boca with a guide. Loads of different nationalities in the group of about 30. Normally wouldn’t do this kind of trip but it was the only way we could get tickets in the UK. We paid about £100 and sat in Sector L, which is along the touch line between the Boca tunnel and the away team tunnel and is next to the main hooligan/fans area. The guide sat next to us in the staduim and told us that he sits in this sector every game and we felt safe throughout the game. You do need to be slightly careful but don’t let that put you off going to watch a game. The staduim was brilliant. A proper old school staduim, standing behind both goals and seats along the side. The tour company offer different price tickets ranging from about £65 to £100 each. After the game the guide took us back to the coach and then dropped us back off in San Telmo. I got talking to a few locals who said that you can get tickets from members outside the staduim at a lot cheaper prices but again you have to be careful if your going to do this. We went on the tour of the staduim the day before the game. The guide was really good and spoke English, he conducted the tour in Spanish and then came over to our group and explained what he had said. The tour isn’t brillant but it’s definitely worth £8. You get to look around the staduim visit the museum and have a drink in the bar at the end ( we sat on the terrace behind the goal with a nice cold beer ! ). The club shop is expensive, but there are loads of shops selling brilliant copies all around the staduim at cheap prices. They have all the teams in Argentina plus the national team shirts. I would recommend the steak restaurant directly opposite the staduim. It’s nothing special when you walk in but the steak was amazing ! and for only about £5 with a beer ! After the tour we walked down to La Camitino tourist area, it’s only a five minute walk, we didn’t have any problems but be a little careful because apparently they have a lot of crime in this area between the staduim and the start of the Main tourist Street.

Buneos Aires is brilliant !

Reviews of Day Tours Classic

We recently did the tangol football stadium tour of boca juniors and river plate (the two biggest football teams in argentina). the tour was amazing, our tour guide translated the whole tour for us to english so we got a great experience, we weren't luck enough to be in ba when boca were playing at home but went for the next best option - the guided tour of their stadium. we had a grear guide (eugenie). she gave us loads of information on the ride there about the different areas we passed through and the history of the club. she took us through the museum and gave us so much information that we would never have found out if we had been wandering through on our own. she then accompanied us on the tour of the stadium itself which was really useful as it was largely in spanish and meant the stadium tour guide didn't need to repeat everything for us. i would definitely recommend this tour if you are a football fan., we did the football tour with tangol, and saw both the la bombonera as well as the monumental stadium. we arranged the booking with julieta, who was very helpful in getting the booking done last minute. the tour itself was fascinating and the guide was very knowledgeable. he himself is a river plate supporter, and knew lots of little anecdotes on el clasico (the river vs. boca derby). overall i highly suggest this tour as it is also a very safe way to experience the neighbourhood of la boca., being a student and only visiting buenos aires for a short time, tangol was the best option i could ask for. besides going on a wonderful tour and having a great time at the futbol stadium tour, the customer service was terrific. anytime i wanted to double check a booking or had a question, they would respond promptly and always have an answer for me. i recommend using tangol for all your buenos aires trip adventures., excellent tour pablo our guide was really knowledgeable in regards to all football not just argentinian and his english is excellent. we had various tours whilst in argentina but have to say this is by far the best.

Maradona (Diego)

Boca Juniors’ supporters, known as “Los Xeneizes,” are among the most passionate in the world. The atmosphere inside La Bombonera is electrifying, with fans singing, chanting, and drumming throughout the match. The stadium’s steep stands, with supporters almost on top of the pitch, create an intimate setting that’s both intimidating for opponents and exhilarating for the home team.

The fans at La Bombonera are not just spectators; they’re an integral part of the game. They’re the mythical “12th man” who push their team to victory. The stadium’s unique acoustics make it seem as if the whole stadium is singing as one, creating a deafening wall of sound that’s become a symbol of the club’s indomitable spirit.

It is a dream of many football fans. Attend a match at La Bombonera. Boca Juniors plays its matches at the La Bombonera stadium and is located in the La Boca district in Buenos Aires. The stadium can accommodate around 49,000 people.

Due to many riots in the past, it is unfortunately no longer allowed in Argentina for supporters to visit away games.

How to buy tickets for Boca Juniors?

Since this year I have been in contact with Nicolas who organizes football experiences in Buenos Aires. This includes the tickets to the game, hotel pick-up and drop-off, and a guide for during the game. To make it easier, I created a page to send your request and he will get in contact with you. Click here to the page.

However, there are also a lot of scamming practices on the market. High prices, fake tickets, cancelations, … So watch out! It is not easy to get a football ticket on your own. First, you need to understand how the ticket sale works.

First of all: ticket sales were handed over to supporters’ groups, a few years ago. Residents subscribe themselves on a waiting list to get a Boca Juniors member card. The waiting time runs up to 6 years now!

However, often supporters don’t go to all the Boca games. It happens that a Boca Junior supporter has an agreement with a hotel or broker. If the supporter doesn’t go to a game, he lends his seasonal pass (member card) to the broker. Of course for a price. And the story continues. The broker adds a percentage, and so on.

On your own getting a ticket is hopeless, even impossible.

Are there other options?

Yes, since shortly I am in contact with Nicolas who organizes football experiences in Buenos Aires. Click here to the page.

Other option is that you need to know a Boca Junior fan in person. And he/she is willing to lend the seasonal pass.

Or, you go by a broker, hotel, or tourist organization. But prices per ticket vary between $160 USD and $400 USD. Landingpadba.com is one of the tourist agencies and is well trusted where you can buy tickets for Boca Juniors. I don’t trust Viagogo.

Furthermore, be aware that it’s known that fake tickets are going around!

If you can’t buy tickets for Boca Juniors, I can advise on taking a tour in La Bombonera. It’s a guided tour through the stadium and the museum. A must-do for Boca Juniors fans. Book your ticket online to skip lines.

Visit the Boca Juniors stadium

Watching live a game of the Boca Juniors is truly amazing. As a tourist, you need to be very lucky to get a ticket. But I can recommend you visit La Bombonera stadium! Daily you can visit the stadium and get a tour. Some guides speak English, and during the one-hour tour, you will get a great impression of the club. I went more than once to the stadium for the tour with family and friends and never got bored.

Below I present you the option to visit River Plate’s stadium and Boca Juniors during one tour. Or you can just go directly to La Bombonera to get a ticket. A waiting line can occur.

I would recommend purchasing tickets in advance if possible. The closer to the game, the more expensive the tickets will be, but it’s worth it to avoid the long lines and crowds.

Just wanted to say thank you! We were really nervous after reading about how difficult it was to get tickets to a Boca juniors match. Landingpadba were wonderful! Funny guides, well organized and great seats! Muchas gracias!! Which tango show do you like the best?

I got tickets from Wander Argentina as a surprise for my hubby for his birthday. They were cheaper than anywhere else and amazing seats by the field.

Hi Glenn! Thank you for honestly stating, that it is “impossible” to get the ticket for mens matches. But what about womens team? Are there higher chances for a tourist? Do you have any idea how can one get there? Thanks!

' src=

Hi Karel, I’m not really informed about the womens team. I will try to get some info and updates as soon as possible.

Hi Glenn, after 51 years i will finally be in Argentina to hopefully see Boca play against Arsenal on 3/11, can you please provide the absolute best way if any I can get 2 tickets to this game please. I am coming from Australia finally and would hate to miss this chance to see them live as I will never get this chance again, any help would be much appreciated, thanks George

Hi George, thank you for visiting our website and welcome to Buenos Aires. Getting tickets for Boca Juniors is difficult. I would suggest contacting Landingpadba. This is not a guarantee for getting the tickets. At this moment there are no other ways. Have a pleasant stay in Argentina 😉 Cheers.

Why don’t you trust viagogo?

Hi Bruce, travelers contacted us with their review about Viagogo. Often we receive the story of fake tickets or cancellation at the very last moment. Therefore, the chance of a valid ticket and that you will actually see the game is very low.

Is there other trusted companies that sell tickets for Boca matches? Thank you

Hi Roger, the only trusted way at this moment is Landingpadba. Cheers!

Tickets to Boca Juniors games can be tricky, but we got you covered! Our relaxed guided tours guarantee entry and a stress free day.

Please note that Boca Juniors stadium has a members’ only policy in effect. There are no public ticket sales (with the exception of international tournaments) and no entry allowed to anyone without a Boca Juniors membership card (these are provided on game day by our team). The stadium and club have made attendance very difficult so our spaces are limited for Boca Juniors home game matches. Please be aware of the complications and high demand to attend their stadium- there is now a 7 year waiting period to become a club member!

Boca Juniors are the most internationally known Argentinean futbol team from Argentina. The players’ fame is only matched by the boisterous and often insanely devoted fans. The elite fans (dubbed La Doce, as in the 12th player, because they are so loud and distracting they count as an additional player) have an entire section devoted only to them. Hear the loud echoing chants that reverberate throughout the entire La Boca neighborhood on a game day, see the drums that are so large two men have to carry them to be played. This stadium is the top example of Argentinean passion for football.

Iconic Stadiums | 3. “La Bombonera”

...

Present in tours

The blue and yellow terraces stands want to completely surround the pitch, but they can't because there are modern stands on one side. Seen from above it looks like a flat structure, as if the walls were just adornments reflecting the colour of team jersey.

The structure is immense and extremely steep. It makes people dizzy with vertigo, and creates a shadow. The high stairs seem to be in freefall; like slides running from the highest point of the stadium to one sole destination - the bottom. Behind the goals, the crush barriers disorderly, at different heights, attempt to avoid this effect. They become visual tricks when the stadium's empty; obstacles in an unmanageable labyrinth. This all leads to one sensation: that Boca Juniors' stadium is living creature.

The club's original stadium was located just a few blocks away, where the Usina del Arte now stands. For some the local team is a source of pride for the neighbourhood, a focus for the country's identity and an international brand. La Bombonera, then, is the materialisation of this emotionally explosive phenomenon.

At the lowest point is the tunnel, the path to the centre of the world. Above is the giant screen and the unreachable lights lost in the sky. The cables and pipes are visible; there are uneven arches and confetti from the previous Sunday. La Bombonera is not a perfect god; it's more human than that. When the supporters decide it's time, everyone jumps in unison and the stadium, rather than shake, beats like a heart.
