On Monday, the DP World Tour — aka the PGA European Tour — announced a partnership with Kentucky whiskey producer Buffalo Trace.

Buffalo Trace will join three tournaments on the 2023 DP World Tour Schedule. It will be an official partner of the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo and official sponsor of two Rolex Series events: the Genesis Scottish Open and the BMW PGA Championship.

“Buffalo Trace Distillery is proud to partner with the DP World Tour to introduce our portfolio of American Whiskey to golf fans around the world,” Andrew Duncan, global director of American Whiskey at Buffalo Trace Distillery, said in a news release .

Buffalo Trace produces numerous highly regarded bourbon brands, including Pappy Van Winkle, Eagle Rare, W.L. Weller and E.H. Taylor, Jr.

Buffalo Trace will be the exclusive whiskey partner at each tournament. It will serve products including Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Bourbon, Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey and Buffalo Trace Distillery Bourbon Cream.

“Much like the process to create Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, or any of our other fine whiskies, developing the perfect swing takes patience, perseverance, exacting attention to detail, and passion for the craft,” Duncan said. “We invite golf fans all over the globe to celebrate the world’s best players on a global stage by joining Buffalo Trace Distillery on the 19th hole for a pour of whiskey.”

The partnership will include social media, digital media, in-store, on-course and pouring aspects, as well as a content series featuring “top golfers,” according to the news release.

Buffalo Trace will also have on-course branding at the Betfred British Masters.

“DP World Tour events have evolved to become full entertainment experiences, and our three UK summer events are a prime example of this,” said Max Hamilton, group commercial director at the DP World Tour. “Our partners play a big role in enhancing them and in Buffalo Trace Distillery we now have one of the world’s pre-eminent spirits brands joining us. “Their commitment to the time-honoured tradition of whiskey making, while also embracing and pushing the boundaries of innovation, is something that resonates with the Tour. We look forward to working together, starting in the UK this summer, to deliver engaging and impactful experiences that excite our joint audiences.”

Peat and greet: buffalo trace.

Buffalo Trace Distillery prepares to attract UK whisky drinkers to America’s native spirit with big activations and a rare experimental release.

Buffalo-Trace-golf

As the Bourbon boom continues to send ripples around the globe, the world’s most award-winning spirits producer, Buffalo Trace Distillery, is making its mark on British soil with a series of activations and innovative product releases that will make the eyes of global whisky drinkers wander.

While golf and whisky often go hand in hand, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been sowing the seeds of a new narrative as an official sponsor of three UK golf tournaments, including the recent Scottish Open.

Known as the leading men’s professional golf series in Europe, the DP World Tour kicked off in June with Buffalo Trace playing the part of the tournament’s exclusive whiskey partner. With various brands in the distiller’s portfolio available to enjoy at the 19th hole, including the flagship Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Eagle Rare 10 Years Old Bourbon, Sazerac Rye Whiskey, and Buffalo Trace Distillery Bourbon Cream, the DP World Tour has provided a forum for the distiller to introduce its portfolio of American whiskeys to golf fans around the UK, and beyond.

Buffalo Trace Distillery aspires to create true innovation in whiskey. Most recently, the Kentucky-based distillery made moves into the traditionally Scottish peat-led sector.

With a mantra of ‘Honor Tradition, Embrace Change’, Buffalo Trace Distillery has never shied away from whiskey innovation in its storied history, and so this autumn, the producer will continue to push the boundaries of innovation with the launch of the 26th expression in its famed Experimental Collection. The new release – Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Peated Bourbon – uses peat, an ingredient rarely found in Bourbon production, and one that will likely excite the palates of consumers who would usually reach for a smokier style of dram over Bourbon’s traditional vanilla, mint and molasses notes.

Buffalo-Trace-whiskey

Buffalo Trace Experimental Peated Bourbon is the result of a trial by Harlen Wheatley, Buffalo Trace’s master distiller, who reckoned that if the peat character shone through the distillation as he anticipated, the smoky flavour would add an extra complexity to Buffalo Trace’s traditional Bourbon mash bill, resulting in a spirit appealing to connoisseurs who appreciate a traditional – yet completely unique – sipping whiskey. He was proven correct.

The experimental distillate, aged for nearly 10 years in new charred white oak casks, underwent regular spot checks by Wheatley and his team before being bottled at 45% ABV. The nose is smoky and nutty, with hints of leather, mahogany, and cacao beans, and the influence of the peated malt provides a palate of light smoke and brown butter, with a sweet toffee finish.

Keen to experiment

However, Wheatley notes that the Experimental Collection is not about breaking the rules of Bourbon – 95% of Buffalo Trace’s experiments staying within the confines of traditional methods of making whiskey. “We conduct this research to better understand the variables that affect our final flavour profiles,” he explains. “We were eager to experiment with peat to see how it influenced our mash bill from a recipe perspective. We anticipated it providing the perfect hint of smoke, just enough to compliment the sweet and spicy notes from the rye, and I’m happy to report our hypothesis was correct.”

Now, after sales of American whiskey in the UK topped £1 billion (US$1.31bn) in 2016, these latest innovations in the Scotch whisky-adjacent space will allow Buffalo Trace Distillery to surf the ever-growing wave of Bourbon’s popularity in the UK, and it would seem British consumers are more than happy to join it for the ride.

Trace Crowe is family’s second sports trailblazer in as many generations

Tour Insider

PGA TOUR rookie’s father led unheralded Furman to basketball glory

Change Text Size

Trace Crowe was born to break the script. His father Dale, Furman basketball’s steady, slippery point guard, piloted the Paladins to an 83-70 upset of coach Dean Smith’s North Carolina Tar Heels in February 1979 – Furman’s second straight win over big, bad UNC. Smith and UNC’s fearsome defense were ranked No. 4 at the time, but as The Greenville News wrote: “On this night, with playmaker Dale Crowe gliding across the floor with the greatest of ease, those fears were unwarranted.”

Dale Crowe lived his basketball dream, but one thing remains on his bucket list: playing nine holes with his son. It would be a tall order – Dale, 65, lives in chronic back pain after a severe injury suffered from a fall in his mid-30s – but that won’t keep him from wishing it.

“And not for the golf,” he said. “Just to talk trash and have fun.”

Don’t rule it out. For the Crowes, adversity is just a construct.

Trace Crowe, 27, returns to his home state of South Carolina for this week’s inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, in the town where he first decided to give golf a chance. It’s a full-circle moment for the PGA TOUR rookie, whose family will make the trip – dad, sister, brother-in-law, nephew and twin nieces – to lend love and support.

“They’ve slept in cars before tournaments, you know what I mean?” said Crowe’s sister Gretchen, 13 years older. “My dad was very committed to him succeeding.”

Trace Crowe earns his first PGA TOUR card at Q-School

Sometimes the road less traveled is the best way, and Trace, too, has broken his own path.

Crowe was raised off the 10th hole at Smithfields Country Club, a semi-private track in small-town Easley (a small city of 23,000 in upper-west South Carolina), and try as Dale Crowe might, he could never get his youngest son to pick up a golf club. That changed on a travel baseball trip to Myrtle Beach when Trace was 10. Father and son visited Martin’s, a golf and tennis store, during a break between games. Dad bought son a set of six clubs – driver, 3-wood, 5-iron, 7-iron, wedge and putter – and Trace never played travel baseball again, Dale said. The younger Crowe continued to dabble in pickup basketball through his high school years – like his father – but golf was the focus from then onward.

With Trace practically living at the course, Dale Crowe gave his son a hunting walkie-talkie to communicate when he’d be home for dinner. Trace pushed his limits. “Sometimes you’d want to stay a little longer, just say (the walkie-talkie) didn’t work,” Trace quipped. “Always got home, or I got in trouble. It was one of the two.”

Crowe won the Smithfields club championship at age 14, earning a desirable parking spot for the year – without his driver’s license, he’d park his golf cart in it. Golf wasn’t cheap, particularly traveling to junior events, but club regulars kept him supplied with equipment, for they could see his knack for the game – he had good hands. Brothers Daniel and Jonathan Bowden would offer ad hoc instruction as Crowe learned the fundamentals (Daniel now coaches at UNC-Wilmington; Jonathan is a performance coach and college recruiting consultant). But his first formal instruction didn’t come until shortly before college, from Jackie Seawell, the late father of longtime Alabama men’s golf coach Jay Seawell.

Dale Crowe savored it all, for while he came to the game late, he made up for lost time. He got his first lesson from fellow Furman student Brad Faxon (they met through mutual friends) and was hooked. He got good quickly and had progressed to a 4 or 5 handicap before his accident curtailed his golf days. He worked for a paper company, coached college basketball and had three children: Gretchen, Ty and Trace, by far the youngest.

After his accident, Dale spent time in real estate and was part owner of a mortgage company, but chronic pain limited his work capacity. He worked overtime, though, for his son’s golf prospects that became a shared dream.

“He was a really good salesman to the people in our town,” Trace said. “Everybody helped out. We used every last penny to get to junior events, stayed with a bunch of people. We would stay at some sketchy spots now, looking back at it, but you didn’t think about any of that. You’re just so excited to get to go play.”

Trace never played an American Junior Golf Association event, but he attracted attention in South Carolina. He received a scholarship to complete high school at the Hilton Head Christian Academy (preparing him for college golf) and landed at Auburn, where he flourished and spent a few years after college before moving to Charlotte.

Crowe began 2023 on conditional Korn Ferry Tour status but played so well that he narrowly missed his TOUR card through the top 30 on the season-long standings. Still, after having earned his spot at Q-School’s Final Stage, he triumphed through injury to achieve the dream that began in a Myrtle Beach golf-and-tennis store.

Crowe never cries after golf tournaments, regardless of outcome. That changed on the final day of Q-School’s Final Stage. As he walked up the 72nd fairway at TPC Sawgrass’ Dye’s Valley Course, living in the moment, he caught a glimpse of his dad and sister from the corner of his eye. He couldn’t help it. He broke.

Good thing he had five shots to play with. He tapped in for bogey and his TOUR card and made a beeline to celebrate with those who matter most, including his father, whom The Greenville News described as gliding across the court during that upset of UNC.

All these years later, Trace Crowe was now doing the same, practically walking on air.

“I’m so happy and blessed to be out here,” Crowe said. “All the people around me, to help me get here, I’m so fortunate. Just grateful.”
